Aleksandar Milosevic, Chief Software Architect at banking software provider Asseco SEE explains the business benefits of working with BIAN to define standardised APIs.

Using standard interfaces to consolidate and modernise portfolio

As a vendor that grew through acquisitions, we inherited a rich collection of applications that have their application specific interfaces. Applications that had similar scope ended up having their specific interfaces for essentially the same responsibilities. One of our strategic goals was to cut integration time and cost and over time achieve plug-and-play interoperability between different applications in our portfolio. Another goal was to hide any application or platform specifics behind the interfaces so we can gradually modernise individual applications without disturbing the others. Last but not least, our goal was to enable easier consumption of our interfaces from customers and partners. As we were already using BIAN as a map for application portfolio tracking and optimisation we decided to go a step further with BIAN — to define standard A2A interfaces aligned with BIAN and retire legacy application specific interfaces.

Asseco Reference REST APIs

We formed working groups from domain experts and gave them the charter to standardise REST APIs for Asseco SEE banking applications. One of the biggest challenges when defining a large set of consistent APIs is the alignment of their responsibilities and boundaries. Through our experience with BIAN we learned that we could utilise the landscape for functional decomposition of APIs in which each service domain becomes a candidate boundary for an API definition. Having clear rules for establishing service domains reduced the risk of unclear boundaries and increased the productivity of our working groups.

30 APIs and counting

Since the beginning of 2016, our working groups were able to define 30 APIs and our many product teams implemented those APIs as both consumers and providers. Working on standard APIs had an integral impact on our development organisation and helped broaden the perspectives outside organisational and application siloes. With three banks already using REST APIs and many more in the pipeline, APIs and their alignment with BIAN is a hot topic in almost any discussion that we have with banks today.

Short summary

Financial services

South East Europe

2017 – ongoing

Asseco SEE is a public listed company, part of Asseco Group, and a global market leader in FinTech software solutions.

The challenge

Asseco needed a development partner to support them in the enhancement of one of their existing mobile banking solutions.

They enlisted the support of DECODE in order to add new features to the app, adapt the project in line with new market regulations, improve the user experience, and offer ongoing maintenance support—fixing bugs and addressing other issues reported by users.

The solution

To realize the full breadth of this project, DECODE’s iOS and Android teams joined forces with the in-house team at Asseco SEE.

We worked in partnership for around three years in total, building out a bespoke mobile banking solution with a far-reaching spectrum of capabilities.

Because our development work all took place while the app was still in use, there was no room for imperfection or error in our approach.

Drawing on our previous experience of other enterprise-level projects, we were able to consistently deliver on user expectations, resulting in a robust, highly functional and highly usable application.

mbanking development partner

With two top-notch teams, leading technologies, and years of experience on both sides, this collaboration was always bound to be a success.

And judging from the user feedback we received, it most certainly was.

The mobile banking app we helped create comprised an impressive range of features including

  • Mobile wallet and security token
  • Card management
  • Receipts management
  • Payments management
  • Currency exchange

How to ensure full transparency and trust in remote working. Rafał Kozłowski, Vice President, CFO of Asseco talks about the effects and impressions of using Harmodesk in Asseco.

asseco case study book

In the finance department of Asseco S.A., a worsening of problems was observed, related, among others, to: organizing, arranging and prioritizing tasks coming from many systems, visibility of task execution statuses within the team for managers, communication between team members. These activities, after the decision on remote working of the team, consumed the time of employees and managers more than before, and the dynamic situation introduced the team into “fire fighting” mode. A decision on implementation of Harmodesk was taken.

Watch the webinar if you want to learn how with Harmodesk:

The distribution of tasks coming from various systems are organized and automated., employees and leaders have gained a clear overview of the tasks requiring the execution in one place., the manager and employees do not waste time any longer - everyone knows who, what is to be done and when is it to be done., no more "fire fighting", there is a sense of control and assurance that the problems will not return..

A microservices-based implementation for a more scalable architecture at Asseco

Asseco required a replacement for its legacy ERP/CRM system to provide a more scalable architecture. We utilized Domain-Driven Design methods to deliver a microservices-based implementation of a highly customizable cloud-based CRM.

The Opportunity

Asseco required a replacement for its legacy ERP/CRM system to provide a more scalable architecture. The legacy system had reached breaking point and adding new features was difficult due to the complexity of the architecture. Asseco tasked Blocshop with developing a replacement to reduce their system complexity going forward.

The Approach

Blocshop utilized Domain-Driven Design methods to deliver a microservices-based implementation of a highly configurable and customizable multi-tenant cloud-based CRM. Agile delivery methods were used to complement the delivery, which was the best-in-class digital architecture. In technology terms, the Front End was delivered in Angular with the microservices layer written in .NET Core and deployed via Docker and Kubernetes to Azure .

About Asseco

With over 32,000 customers, Asseco is a pioneer and visionary in the ERP sector. Asseco has been delivering the most up-to-date technologies in the area of cutting-edge business software for 25 years.

‘dr bawumia and the modern vice presidency’ in ghana’ book set to be launched.

asseco case study book

An Associate Professor of Journalism and Communication at the University of Media, Arts and Communication-Institute of Journalism, Prof Etse Sikanku is set to launch a book that contributes to studies on a less researched institution which is the vice presidency, mainly in the Ghanaian context.

The book, which uses Ghana’s current Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a case study, contributes to leadership studies by unearthing the values and principles of Vice President Bawumia.

The book, titled, ‘Dr Bawumia and The Modern Vice Presidency in Ghana, will be launched on Friday, 7th June 2024 at the British Council Hall in Accra at 5.00 pm.

The book will be useful to a wide variety of fields such as African studies, political science, democratic studies and leadership studies.

The evolution of the vice presidency in Ghana

Despite the changing dynamics of the presidency in Ghana, there is limited work on the evolving role of the vice presidency in one of Africa’s most heralded democracies using an individual as a case study.

This book focuses on the values, principles, experiences, communication, outlook and leadership of Vice President Dr Bawumia.

According to the synopsis, "This book fills an important gap because it calls attention not only to an often-overlooked position but to the increasing significance, substantiveness and evolutionary status of the vice presidency using Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a primer.”

Through his agility, dutifulness and commitment, he made the office of the Vice President more visible, practical, and impactful thereby reforming, reinvigorating, and renewing the institutional relevance of the office for years to come”the synopsis notes.

The book highlights Dr Bawumia’s efforts in transforming the vice presidency in Ghana.

“Our nation, our democracy and the institution of the vice presidency will never be the same again thanks to Dr Bawumia, and his dynamic transformation of the VPship, as an instrument for impact and advocacy on causes such as digitalization, political civility, innovation, social cohesion, development, societal progress, compassion, and unlimited opportunities.

The synopsis notes that "In both image and stature, the office has taken a modern, progressive and forward-looking turn setting the tone for future democratic leadership for a long time.

As part of ongoing conversations about leadership, this book seeks to capture the underlying ethos of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with the hope of helping to understand and appreciate a man who has become a consequential figure in Ghana’s national and political affairs.

It is hoped that this book will be a great resource to the general public, observers and followers of politics, communication, international affairs, political science, African affairs, and the international community.

Hopefully, from a scholarly perspective, it should add to the literature on this important position while spurring debates about the form, structure, and role of the vice presidency in established as well as emerging democracies”the synopsis concluded.
