Tenses are a grammatical concept that helps convey the timing of actions or events in a sentence. In English, there are three primary tenses: past, present, and future. Each tense is further divided into four aspects: simple, continuous (or progressive), perfect, and perfect continuous (or perfect progressive).

There are three types of tenses: Past, Present and Future Tense.

They are further divided as:

1. Simple Present, Past and Future Tense

Present tense: actions happening now or regularly. Past tense: actions completed in the past. Future tense: actions that will happen in the future.

Simple Present Tense

→ John consistently completes his assignments before the deadline. → The renowned scientist regularly conducts groundbreaking experiments that revolutionise our understanding of physics. → Each year, the charity organisation distributes thousands of meals to underprivileged families during the holiday season. → The team captain always motivates and inspires his teammates to perform at their best during crucial matches. → The dedicated teacher continues to impart knowledge and nurture the intellectual growth of her students.

Simple Past Tense

→ She completed her assignment before the deadline. → Yesterday, he went to the market and bought fresh vegetables. → The team did not win the championship last year. → Did you enjoy the concert last night? → We visited the museum last summer during our family vacation.

Simple Future Tense

→ By the time we arrive at the conference, the keynote speaker will have already begun addressing the audience. → After she finishes her exams, Maria will have dedicated countless hours to studying for her final year of high school. → By this time next year, they will have completed the construction of the new bridge, connecting the two sides of the city. → Once the scientists have conducted extensive research, they will present their findings at the international conference on climate change. → By the end of the month, the team will have implemented a series of innovative strategies to enhance the efficiency of the company's operations.

2. Present, Past and Future Continuous Tense

Present continuous: actions happening at the present moment. Past continuous: actions that were ongoing in the past. Future continuous: actions that will be ongoing in the future.

Present Continuous Tense

→ The construction workers are diligently laying the foundation for the new skyscraper that will redefine the city skyline. → As the orchestra rehearses for the upcoming concert , the conductor skillfully guides the musicians through intricate musical passages, ensuring a flawless performance. → While scientists are conducting experiments in the state-of-the-art laboratory, they are simultaneously analyzing data to unravel the mysteries of a rare celestial phenomenon. → The renowned chef is meticulously crafting a culinary masterpiece in the bustling kitchen, infusing flavours and textures to create a dish that will delight even the most discerning palate. → In the innovation hub, engineers and designers are incorporating cutting-edge technology and pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible in their field.

Past Continuous Tense

→ While I was studying for my exams, my little sister was playing the piano loudly in the next room, creating a distracting environment. → The scientists were conducting experiments in the laboratory when suddenly the power went out, causing a temporary halt to their research. → As the Sun was setting , the explorers were traversing through the dense jungle, carefully observing the unique flora and fauna surrounding them. → While the chef was preparing the main course in the kitchen, the guests were chatting animatedly in the dining room, eagerly awaiting the delicious meal. → The detective was interrogating the suspect when a mysterious phone call interrupted the questioning, adding an unexpected twist to the ongoing investigation.

Future Continuous Tense

→ By the time you arrive at the party, we will have been celebrating for two hours. → Next year, at this time, they will be building the largest skyscraper in the city. → By the end of the week, she will have been working on the project for a month. → In 2025, scientists will be conducting groundbreaking experiments in the field of artificial intelligence. → By the time the astronauts return from their mission to Mars, they will have been exploring the red planet for over a year.

3. Present, Past and Future Perfect Tense

Present perfect tense: action that started in the past and continues into the present or an action that has just been completed. Past perfect tense: action completed before another action in the past, or a point in the past. Future perfect tense: action that will be completed before another action or time in the future.

Present Perfect Tense

→ By the time he arrives, we will have already finished the project, which we have been working on tirelessly for the past six months. → She h as not only travelled to exotic destinations but has also mastered several foreign languages, making her a truly cosmopolitan individual. → The scientist has conducted numerous experiments in the quest for a groundbreaking discovery, and finally, after years of research, he has made a significant breakthrough. → Over the years, technology has evolved rapidly, and many innovations have emerged that have fundamentally transformed the way we communicate and conduct business. → Having lived in various countries and experienced diverse cultures, they have developed a broad perspective on life, enriching their understanding of the world.

Past Perfect Tense

→ By the time the concert began, Shelly had already purchased her ticket and found her seat. → Before the storm hit, the workers had finished securing the construction site. → He had never seen such a beautiful sunset before he visited the tropical island. → By the time the detective arrived, the thief had escaped with the stolen jewels. → After they had completed the challenging hike, the group felt a sense of accomplishment and exhaustion.

Future Perfect Tense

→ Scientists will have made significant advancements in understanding the possibilities of life beyond Earth. → Next year, our team will have completed a groundbreaking research project on renewable energy sources, revolutionising the way we generate power. → By the end of the semester, the students will have mastered complex mathematical concepts that were initially challenging for them. → In a few years, technology companies will have developed innovative solutions that could potentially eliminate the need for traditional passwords, relying on advanced biometric authentication. → By the time he reaches the age of 30, Mark will have travelled to at least 20 different countries, fulfilling his lifelong dream of experiencing diverse cultures around the world.

4. Present, Past and Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Present perfect continuous tense: action that started in the past, continues in the present, and may continue. Past perfect continuous tense: action that started in the past, continued up to another point in the past, and may have relevance to that past point. Future perfect continuous tense: action that will occur in the future before another action or time.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense

→ I have been studying English for five years. → She has been working at the company since January. → We have been living in this city for a decade. → They have been renovating their house for months. → The kids have been playing in the park all afternoon.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

→ I had been studying for two hours before my friends arrived at my house. → She had been working at the company for five years when she decided to pursue a new career. → They had been travelling around Europe for several weeks before they finally settled in Paris. → By the time the concert started, the band had been rehearsing for hours. → He had been waiting for the bus for half an hour when it finally arrived.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense

→ By the time the clock strikes midnight, we will have been studying for 6 hours. → In December, they will have been living in the new house for two years. → By the end of the month, she will have been working on her project for three weeks. → Next year, I will have been learning French for five years. → By the time the concert starts, the band will have been rehearsing for hours.

Introduction

Tense is an English grammar concept. It represents the form taken by the verb to comprehend the situation referred to in time. For example, in the sentence, Yash walked for 2 hours and then he went to sleep, the past tense verb form, walk(+ed) signals the time of the walk in the past. Future Tense - I will swim

Before we start with the More complicated divisions there are three rules we should keep in mind-

Only indicative forms of verbs are tensed.

All the tenses have progressive and non-progressive forms for eg, I work here/I am working here, are both Present tense. 

When a verb form is a very important complex, which involves more than one auxiliary, it is the first auxiliary that is marked for tense, not the main verb.

Types of Tenses 

Present Tense

Simple Present Tense:: It is used to express daily tasks, facts, and universal truths. The present tense is used to express what is happening or happens daily or is a fact in itself. Adding the letter s or es makes a simple present tense.

Like- Likes

You, We, They: Like to play outside.

He, She, It: likes to play outside

for example-

She writes a book.

Moon comes out at night.

New Delhi is the capital city of India.

Present Perfect Tense: The present perfect tense is used to describe actions that are completed.

I, You, We, They: have killed time.

He, She, It: has killed time.

I have seen the movie you love the most.

He has been to India 

Present Perfect Continuous Tense: We use the present perfect continuous when the focus is on an action that is not yet finished or completed.

I, You, We, They: have been playing for a day.

He, She, It: has been playing for a day.

I have been waiting for the car for an hour.

It has not been raining since last Friday.

Simple Past Tense: Used to indicate an action that happened in the past. It often comes with an adverb of time. Sometimes it can be used without an adverb of time. Used for past habits. 

I went to school.

You worked very hard in exams.

She did not

Past Continuous Tense: The past continuous tense is a very important tense in English. We use it to express what we were in the middle of doing at a particular moment in the past. 

I, she, he, it- was playing in the garden.

They, We - were playing in the garden

I was cooking last night for my sister’s children.

They were not playing scrabble when I checked on them.

Past Perfect Tense: The past perfect tense is easy to understand and to use in a sentence. This tense talks about an event which happened in the past. If two actions happened in the past, the past perfect tense is used to display the action that took place earlier.

I, he, she, it, we, they  - had arrived at the station

We were too late when the movie started. 

I thought I had seen the movie before but I was wrong.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense: Used to denote an event that started before a certain point in the past and continued up to some time in the past.

I, he, she, we, it, you, they - had been sleeping on the couch when I arrived.

Sita was very tired. She had been dancing.

Future Tense

Simple Future Tense: The period of time after speaking a sentence is considered future tense.

This tense is used to express future events and happenings.

Rule – Will/Shall + Verb (Ist form)

I, He, she, it, we, you, they - will/shall play the piano tomorrow.

Sita will ask the questions tomorrow.

They will never speak about this.

Future Continuous Tense: It is used to express an action that is going or continuing in the future. e.g. He will be distributing promotion letters in the office tomorrow at 12 o'clock. In the example, the action will commence in the future (tomorrow) and action is assumed to be continued till sometime in the future.

I, he, she, you, it, they, we- will be arriving at the airport tomorrow.  

I will be playing football on the ground tomorrow.

She will be writing a letter.

Future Perfect Tense: It is used to express an action that will happen/occur in future and will be completed by a certain time in future. We use the future perfect to say that something will be finished by a particular time in the future.

I, he, we, she, they, it - will have dinner at 10 pm

She will have forgotten him by then. 

She will not have written a letter.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense: It is used to talk about actions that will start at a fixed point of time in the future and will go on for some time in the future. 

The future perfect continuous focus on the duration of an activity that will be in progress before another time or event in the future. 

Tomorrow at 4 pm, I will be on my way to Kolkata. 

It is also used to talk about planned actions or actions expected to happen.

 Relatives will be staying at Aunt Mina’s house.

What is a Tense?

A tense is any form of a verb which allows you to show the time during which an or any action has taken place.

For example, “I am eating.", “I was eating" and “I will be eating"

Tenses are primarily of three kinds:

  • Past tense: Past tense is a form of a verb, where an action or a situation has taken place in the past.

For example, I was late for school yesterday.

I already ate the chocolate.

I took bath.

  • Present tense: Present tense is a form of a verb, where an action or a situation is currently taking place.

I am late for school.

I am eating the chocolate.

I am taking a bath.

  • Future tense: Future tense is a form of a verb, where an action or a situation is yet to occur and will take place in the future.

I will be late for school.

I will eat the chocolate.

I will take a bath.

Similarly, the above-mentioned tenses can be categorized into 9 different forms, which are as follows :

She was beginning to get anxious.

  • Present Continuous: Present continuous tense is formed when we combine the subject with the present participle form (-ing word) of the main verb.

I am playing football today.

The baby is crying.

Sam is reading a book.

  • Future Continuous: a Future continuous tense is a form of verb tense which takes place when an action which is on-going will happen in the future.

  • Present Perfect: Present Perfect tense is formed when we use verbs such as “have" or “has" and combine it with the past participle form of the verb.

I have visited the Statue of Liberty.

  • Past Perfect Continuous: Past perfect continuous tense is formed when a continuous action is completed in the past at some point. This form of tense comprises of “had" and “been" along with a present participle of the verb (-ing word).

They will have been living in Delhi for five years.
