AUTHESIS.CLS

A latex dissertation formatter for the american university-college of arts and sciences.

AUTHESIS is a package of files that produces a document which conforms to American University's College of Arts and Sciences (AU-CAS) dissertation formatting requirements. Since early 2008, there have been two acceptable formats. a) the AU-CAS traditional dissertation formatting requirements, as embodied in the original Guide to Thesis Preparation, and b) the AU-CAS revised dissertation format, and embodied in the published addendum to the Guide to Thesis Preparation. Either one of the above options is acceptable, it is up to the dissertation writer to select which format is more to their liking (see instructions below on how to select either option). Dissertations using either format have passed all stages of the approval process. We strongly prefer the revised format, which drops certain formatting requirements dating to the use of typewriters for thesis preparation.

AUTHESIS was initially hacked by Alan Cibils from UCTHESIS, which is available on CTAN, while he completing his PhD. Faculty member Alan Isaac has done most of the work on AUTHESIS since 2002. The thesis class has been very stable for a decade, but it is always possible to find a bug. Currently bug reports should go to Alan Isaac .

Please be sure to examine the known bugs (and possible solutions) near the top of the authesis.cls file.

Download Instructions

You need to make sure you get exact copies of the plain text files reference below. The most reliable method is to right click the file links, and then save the files to your hard drive. Before presenting your dissertation for review, please make sure that you have the most recent version of all the files needed to process your dissertation.

AUPROPOSAL.STY

For your convenience in proposal formatting, you may wish to use auproposal.sty with the article class. (You can test this style file with test_auproposal.tex .) Just put the style file in your proposal folder and add the following in your preamble.

The big payoff is that \maketitle command will then correctly format your title page.

That is the big payoff. However, you will also be provided a frontmatter environment to contain a table of contents, if you wish.

Installing the AUTHESIS class

  • authesis.cls

IMPORTANT: You should use natbib.sty for citations, which is included in your LaTeX distribution. Please look within the file natbib.sty for information on how to use the LaTeX "\cite" commands. You will primarily use \citet (cite as text) and \citep (cite in parentheses).

If you are using the traditional AU-CAS format (but why would you??), you will also need the underline package in order to underline your bibliography book and journal titles and your section headings. We do not recommend going this route: the traditional format is an ugly hangover from the days of typewriters.

NOTE for Scientific Word Users: Adding a LaTeX package to Scientific Word will provide you with guidance on how to make authesis work with Scientific Word. You will want authesis.cst and AmericanUniversityThesis.shl . We do not provide any support for this, but we do want to hear about problems.

PDF PRINTING NOTICE: If you are using pdflatex or pdftex to generate .pdf files and printing them with the Acrobat Reader, make sure that the "fit to page" box is un-checked. If that box is checked, it will result in your thesis or dissertation being printed with incorrect margins.

Using the AUTHESIS class

We provide a template for you to get started: a test thesis with an associated bib file . It is strongly recommended that you carefully examine this template file: look at its contents to see how to code your LaTeX dissertation file. You will want to follow what you see inside the template file very closely.

If you have trouble compiling the template file, you probably forgot to download the class files. (See the installation directions above.)

  • download autest.tex , autest.bib , and all the class files into a single folder
  • open a console ( bash on most systems, but cmd or PowerShell on Windows) and change to that folder
  • in the console, enter pdflatex autest

General Information

IMPORTANT: We provide autest.tex , which produces a sample dissertation (by the fictitious, but very irritating, Will U. Finnish). Use this test file as a skeleton and fill in the appropriate information.

IMPORTANT: If you are using BibTeX for your bibliography (which we strongly recommend ) you must run LaTeX at least three times after running BibTeX. This is required in order to get correct page numbers in the table of contents and lists of figures and tables.

Users who are not quite fluent in LaTeX and TeX should generally not look at the core files: authesis.cls , auecon.clo , aucas.clo , and autxx.clo (where xx=10, 11, or 12 depending on the point size you choose). These contain the code that produces your dissertation output, but users should not be changing them. (If you think a change is needed, file a bug report.) However, there are some comments in therse files that could be helpful. Cibils inserted comments with the label ABC wherever he made a change to the original package. Isaac inserted comments with the literal AI wherever he made a change.

You will need some basic understanding of LaTeX. Start with The not so Short Introduction to LaTeX by Tobias Oetiker . Since you're going to be writing a 100+ page document, you should invest in a copy of the LaTeX manual (by Leslie Lamport the original author of LaTeX). Many people like the more detailed Guide to LaTeX2e (by Helmut Kopka and Patrick Daly).

Using LaTeX to Write a PhD Thesis by NicolaL.C.Talbot provides additional details. The LaTeX Companion , by Goossens, Mittelbach, and Samarin (who have been involved in developping and supporting the new version of LaTeX) is also quite good. It gives a lot of additional information on commonly available style packages, and for advanced users it includes useful information for writing or modifying classes.

SPA Students

Students from the School of Public Affairs need to add to lines to their thesis preamble:

Choosing the AUTHESIS Class

To use the AUTHESIS class, make sure that the authesis.cls file is on your TEXINPUTS search path and use the authesis class with appropriate options. For example, you can put the following command at the start of your input file: \documentclass[econ,11pt]{authesis} .

What the AUTHESIS Class Does

The AUTHESIS style is a modified version of the standard LaTeX REPORT style. The available commands are often identical to those of the REPORT style, so your best starting point for documentation is probably the LaTeX manual written by Leslie Lamport.

  • Margins are 1.5 inches on the left, 1.0 inches elsewhere.
  • Uses a 10 point font size by default; you can use the 11pt or 12pt options for those sizes. Important: It is highly recommended that you use either 10pt or 11pt, since there are some formatting problems with 12pt, especially in the title page.
  • Complete, correct front matter for AU dissertations (cover page, copyright page, numbered abstract page) can be generated. (Comment: AU no longer requires two abstract pages one of which is unnumbered.)
  • The cas and econ options. The cas option produces a document according to the traditional AU-CAS formatting requirements, which predate widespread use of computers for typesetting. Nevertheless, we made this the default option. The econ option which produces a document according to an interpretation of the revised AU-CAS dissertation requirements. The main differences from the cas option are: i) page numbers are always in the top, right hand corner, ii) chapter headings are left justified, iii) \section and \subsection headers are numbered, iv) all section headers are left justified, and v) emphasized text is italicized (rather than the very ugly underline in the traditional style).
  • The 10pt, 11pt, and 12pt styles set the default font size to the obvious value. The 10pt option is the default and thus is redundant, but is safe to use anyway. As noted above, it is highly recommended that you use either 10pt or 11pt.

Front Matter

The other key service provided by this class is that it generates correct front matter (title page, copyright page, abstract, etc.) with a fairly simple set of commands. The format of the front matter is specified quite explicitly in the document Guide to Preparation of Theses and Dissertations distributed by the AU College of Arts and Sciences, your department, or the library. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you obtain a copy of this document and read it before you get too far into your dissertation given that it will be up to you to provide some of the formatting requirements. For example, table captions must go above the table, but figure captions must go below a figure. You need to know this kind of information to insert items in their appropriate place.

Declarations

Title, approval, and copyright pages.

The title and copyright pages have extremely rigid formats that allow them to be generated automatically once the above declarations have been made. To generate them, invoke the macros \maketitle \maketitle \copyrightpage \maketitle is duplicated because you must have two copies of the title page. You should probably invoke them in that order, because that's the order required by the guidelines.

NOTE: The top margin on the title page must be 2 inches. Unfortunately, LaTeX adjusts the margins depending on how many lines there are in the dissertation title. I have calibrated the top margin to work for three line titles. If your title is longer or shorter you might have to go into authesis.cls and modify the top margin setting.

The Front Matter

Abstract environments.

You need to provide a numbered (in lower case roman numerals) abstract page. (Comment: once upon a time you need to provide two abstract pages, which are identical except that one must be unnumbered. This is no longer the case.)

To generate a numbered abstract page: \abstractn Abstract text here

The Abstract must be inside the Front Matter so that the page is numbered correctly (in lower case roman). Therefore it is important that you place the \begin{frontmatter} command before the \abstract command.

Other Front Matter

The remaining front matter (dedication, table of contents, lists of figures and tables, acknowledgements) must be put inside the frontmatter environment, which ensures that page-numbering is handled properly. Within this frontmatter environment, you put the environments and commands for the rest of the front matter. There are environments for dedication and acknowledgements and the standard LaTeX commands for producing \tableofcontents , \listoffigures , and \listoftables .

The standard LaTeX commands are well documented in the LaTeX manual. You will probably have to hand edit the .lof (list of figures) and .lot (list of tables) files to make verbose captions more suitable for this front matter. Once you do this, remember to use the \nofiles macro to keep them from getting overwritten.

The acknowledgements and dedication environments make their contents start on a new page. The acknowledgements environment also put the word Acknowledgements in large, bold, centered text at the top of the page. For formatting the dedication page, you're on your own. After all, the dedication is a kind of poetry and there's no predicting the right way to format poetry.

Other commands not found in the standard report style

The smalltabular and smalltabular* environments are equivalent to the tabular and tabular* environments, except that they use the \small font. The scriptsizetabular and scriptsizetabular* use the \scriptsize font.

How To Write A Dissertation Or Thesis

8 straightforward steps to craft an a-grade dissertation.

By: Derek Jansen (MBA) Expert Reviewed By: Dr Eunice Rautenbach | June 2020

Writing a dissertation or thesis is not a simple task. It takes time, energy and a lot of will power to get you across the finish line. It’s not easy – but it doesn’t necessarily need to be a painful process. If you understand the big-picture process of how to write a dissertation or thesis, your research journey will be a lot smoother.

In this post, I’m going to outline the big-picture process of how to write a high-quality dissertation or thesis, without losing your mind along the way. If you’re just starting your research, this post is perfect for you. Alternatively, if you’ve already submitted your proposal, this article which covers how to structure a dissertation might be more helpful.

How To Write A Dissertation: 8 Steps

  • Clearly understand what a dissertation (or thesis) is
  • Find a unique and valuable research topic
  • Craft a convincing research proposal
  • Write up a strong introduction chapter
  • Review the existing literature and compile a literature review
  • Design a rigorous research strategy and undertake your own research
  • Present the findings of your research
  • Draw a conclusion and discuss the implications

Start writing your dissertation

Step 1: Understand exactly what a dissertation is

This probably sounds like a no-brainer, but all too often, students come to us for help with their research and the underlying issue is that they don’t fully understand what a dissertation (or thesis) actually is.

So, what is a dissertation?

At its simplest, a dissertation or thesis is a formal piece of research , reflecting the standard research process . But what is the standard research process, you ask? The research process involves 4 key steps:

  • Ask a very specific, well-articulated question (s) (your research topic)
  • See what other researchers have said about it (if they’ve already answered it)
  • If they haven’t answered it adequately, undertake your own data collection and analysis in a scientifically rigorous fashion
  • Answer your original question(s), based on your analysis findings

A dissertation or thesis is a formal piece of research, reflecting the standard four step academic research process.

In short, the research process is simply about asking and answering questions in a systematic fashion . This probably sounds pretty obvious, but people often think they’ve done “research”, when in fact what they have done is:

  • Started with a vague, poorly articulated question
  • Not taken the time to see what research has already been done regarding the question
  • Collected data and opinions that support their gut and undertaken a flimsy analysis
  • Drawn a shaky conclusion, based on that analysis

If you want to see the perfect example of this in action, look out for the next Facebook post where someone claims they’ve done “research”… All too often, people consider reading a few blog posts to constitute research. Its no surprise then that what they end up with is an opinion piece, not research. Okay, okay – I’ll climb off my soapbox now.

The key takeaway here is that a dissertation (or thesis) is a formal piece of research, reflecting the research process. It’s not an opinion piece , nor a place to push your agenda or try to convince someone of your position. Writing a good dissertation involves asking a question and taking a systematic, rigorous approach to answering it.

If you understand this and are comfortable leaving your opinions or preconceived ideas at the door, you’re already off to a good start!

A dissertation is not an opinion piece, nor a place to push your agenda or try to convince someone of your position.

Step 2: Find a unique, valuable research topic

As we saw, the first step of the research process is to ask a specific, well-articulated question. In other words, you need to find a research topic that asks a specific question or set of questions (these are called research questions ). Sounds easy enough, right? All you’ve got to do is identify a question or two and you’ve got a winning research topic. Well, not quite…

A good dissertation or thesis topic has a few important attributes. Specifically, a solid research topic should be:

Let’s take a closer look at these:

Attribute #1: Clear

Your research topic needs to be crystal clear about what you’re planning to research, what you want to know, and within what context. There shouldn’t be any ambiguity or vagueness about what you’ll research.

Here’s an example of a clearly articulated research topic:

An analysis of consumer-based factors influencing organisational trust in British low-cost online equity brokerage firms.

As you can see in the example, its crystal clear what will be analysed (factors impacting organisational trust), amongst who (consumers) and in what context (British low-cost equity brokerage firms, based online).

Need a helping hand?

au college dissertation

Attribute #2:   Unique

Your research should be asking a question(s) that hasn’t been asked before, or that hasn’t been asked in a specific context (for example, in a specific country or industry).

For example, sticking organisational trust topic above, it’s quite likely that organisational trust factors in the UK have been investigated before, but the context (online low-cost equity brokerages) could make this research unique. Therefore, the context makes this research original.

One caveat when using context as the basis for originality – you need to have a good reason to suspect that your findings in this context might be different from the existing research – otherwise, there’s no reason to warrant researching it.

Attribute #3: Important

Simply asking a unique or original question is not enough – the question needs to create value. In other words, successfully answering your research questions should provide some value to the field of research or the industry. You can’t research something just to satisfy your curiosity. It needs to make some form of contribution either to research or industry.

For example, researching the factors influencing consumer trust would create value by enabling businesses to tailor their operations and marketing to leverage factors that promote trust. In other words, it would have a clear benefit to industry.

So, how do you go about finding a unique and valuable research topic? We explain that in detail in this video post – How To Find A Research Topic . Yeah, we’ve got you covered 😊

Step 3: Write a convincing research proposal

Once you’ve pinned down a high-quality research topic, the next step is to convince your university to let you research it. No matter how awesome you think your topic is, it still needs to get the rubber stamp before you can move forward with your research. The research proposal is the tool you’ll use for this job.

So, what’s in a research proposal?

The main “job” of a research proposal is to convince your university, advisor or committee that your research topic is worthy of approval. But convince them of what? Well, this varies from university to university, but generally, they want to see that:

  • You have a clearly articulated, unique and important topic (this might sound familiar…)
  • You’ve done some initial reading of the existing literature relevant to your topic (i.e. a literature review)
  • You have a provisional plan in terms of how you will collect data and analyse it (i.e. a methodology)

At the proposal stage, it’s (generally) not expected that you’ve extensively reviewed the existing literature , but you will need to show that you’ve done enough reading to identify a clear gap for original (unique) research. Similarly, they generally don’t expect that you have a rock-solid research methodology mapped out, but you should have an idea of whether you’ll be undertaking qualitative or quantitative analysis , and how you’ll collect your data (we’ll discuss this in more detail later).

Long story short – don’t stress about having every detail of your research meticulously thought out at the proposal stage – this will develop as you progress through your research. However, you do need to show that you’ve “done your homework” and that your research is worthy of approval .

So, how do you go about crafting a high-quality, convincing proposal? We cover that in detail in this video post – How To Write A Top-Class Research Proposal . We’ve also got a video walkthrough of two proposal examples here .

Step 4: Craft a strong introduction chapter

Once your proposal’s been approved, its time to get writing your actual dissertation or thesis! The good news is that if you put the time into crafting a high-quality proposal, you’ve already got a head start on your first three chapters – introduction, literature review and methodology – as you can use your proposal as the basis for these.

Handy sidenote – our free dissertation & thesis template is a great way to speed up your dissertation writing journey.

What’s the introduction chapter all about?

The purpose of the introduction chapter is to set the scene for your research (dare I say, to introduce it…) so that the reader understands what you’ll be researching and why it’s important. In other words, it covers the same ground as the research proposal in that it justifies your research topic.

What goes into the introduction chapter?

This can vary slightly between universities and degrees, but generally, the introduction chapter will include the following:

  • A brief background to the study, explaining the overall area of research
  • A problem statement , explaining what the problem is with the current state of research (in other words, where the knowledge gap exists)
  • Your research questions – in other words, the specific questions your study will seek to answer (based on the knowledge gap)
  • The significance of your study – in other words, why it’s important and how its findings will be useful in the world

As you can see, this all about explaining the “what” and the “why” of your research (as opposed to the “how”). So, your introduction chapter is basically the salesman of your study, “selling” your research to the first-time reader and (hopefully) getting them interested to read more.

How do I write the introduction chapter, you ask? We cover that in detail in this post .

The introduction chapter is where you set the scene for your research, detailing exactly what you’ll be researching and why it’s important.

Step 5: Undertake an in-depth literature review

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll need to do some initial review of the literature in Steps 2 and 3 to find your research gap and craft a convincing research proposal – but that’s just scratching the surface. Once you reach the literature review stage of your dissertation or thesis, you need to dig a lot deeper into the existing research and write up a comprehensive literature review chapter.

What’s the literature review all about?

There are two main stages in the literature review process:

Literature Review Step 1: Reading up

The first stage is for you to deep dive into the existing literature (journal articles, textbook chapters, industry reports, etc) to gain an in-depth understanding of the current state of research regarding your topic. While you don’t need to read every single article, you do need to ensure that you cover all literature that is related to your core research questions, and create a comprehensive catalogue of that literature , which you’ll use in the next step.

Reading and digesting all the relevant literature is a time consuming and intellectually demanding process. Many students underestimate just how much work goes into this step, so make sure that you allocate a good amount of time for this when planning out your research. Thankfully, there are ways to fast track the process – be sure to check out this article covering how to read journal articles quickly .

Dissertation Coaching

Literature Review Step 2: Writing up

Once you’ve worked through the literature and digested it all, you’ll need to write up your literature review chapter. Many students make the mistake of thinking that the literature review chapter is simply a summary of what other researchers have said. While this is partly true, a literature review is much more than just a summary. To pull off a good literature review chapter, you’ll need to achieve at least 3 things:

  • You need to synthesise the existing research , not just summarise it. In other words, you need to show how different pieces of theory fit together, what’s agreed on by researchers, what’s not.
  • You need to highlight a research gap that your research is going to fill. In other words, you’ve got to outline the problem so that your research topic can provide a solution.
  • You need to use the existing research to inform your methodology and approach to your own research design. For example, you might use questions or Likert scales from previous studies in your your own survey design .

As you can see, a good literature review is more than just a summary of the published research. It’s the foundation on which your own research is built, so it deserves a lot of love and attention. Take the time to craft a comprehensive literature review with a suitable structure .

But, how do I actually write the literature review chapter, you ask? We cover that in detail in this video post .

Step 6: Carry out your own research

Once you’ve completed your literature review and have a sound understanding of the existing research, its time to develop your own research (finally!). You’ll design this research specifically so that you can find the answers to your unique research question.

There are two steps here – designing your research strategy and executing on it:

1 – Design your research strategy

The first step is to design your research strategy and craft a methodology chapter . I won’t get into the technicalities of the methodology chapter here, but in simple terms, this chapter is about explaining the “how” of your research. If you recall, the introduction and literature review chapters discussed the “what” and the “why”, so it makes sense that the next point to cover is the “how” –that’s what the methodology chapter is all about.

In this section, you’ll need to make firm decisions about your research design. This includes things like:

  • Your research philosophy (e.g. positivism or interpretivism )
  • Your overall methodology (e.g. qualitative , quantitative or mixed methods)
  • Your data collection strategy (e.g. interviews , focus groups, surveys)
  • Your data analysis strategy (e.g. content analysis , correlation analysis, regression)

If these words have got your head spinning, don’t worry! We’ll explain these in plain language in other posts. It’s not essential that you understand the intricacies of research design (yet!). The key takeaway here is that you’ll need to make decisions about how you’ll design your own research, and you’ll need to describe (and justify) your decisions in your methodology chapter.

2 – Execute: Collect and analyse your data

Once you’ve worked out your research design, you’ll put it into action and start collecting your data. This might mean undertaking interviews, hosting an online survey or any other data collection method. Data collection can take quite a bit of time (especially if you host in-person interviews), so be sure to factor sufficient time into your project plan for this. Oftentimes, things don’t go 100% to plan (for example, you don’t get as many survey responses as you hoped for), so bake a little extra time into your budget here.

Once you’ve collected your data, you’ll need to do some data preparation before you can sink your teeth into the analysis. For example:

  • If you carry out interviews or focus groups, you’ll need to transcribe your audio data to text (i.e. a Word document).
  • If you collect quantitative survey data, you’ll need to clean up your data and get it into the right format for whichever analysis software you use (for example, SPSS, R or STATA).

Once you’ve completed your data prep, you’ll undertake your analysis, using the techniques that you described in your methodology. Depending on what you find in your analysis, you might also do some additional forms of analysis that you hadn’t planned for. For example, you might see something in the data that raises new questions or that requires clarification with further analysis.

The type(s) of analysis that you’ll use depend entirely on the nature of your research and your research questions. For example:

  • If your research if exploratory in nature, you’ll often use qualitative analysis techniques .
  • If your research is confirmatory in nature, you’ll often use quantitative analysis techniques
  • If your research involves a mix of both, you might use a mixed methods approach

Again, if these words have got your head spinning, don’t worry! We’ll explain these concepts and techniques in other posts. The key takeaway is simply that there’s no “one size fits all” for research design and methodology – it all depends on your topic, your research questions and your data. So, don’t be surprised if your study colleagues take a completely different approach to yours.

The research philosophy is at the core of the methodology chapter

Step 7: Present your findings

Once you’ve completed your analysis, it’s time to present your findings (finally!). In a dissertation or thesis, you’ll typically present your findings in two chapters – the results chapter and the discussion chapter .

What’s the difference between the results chapter and the discussion chapter?

While these two chapters are similar, the results chapter generally just presents the processed data neatly and clearly without interpretation, while the discussion chapter explains the story the data are telling  – in other words, it provides your interpretation of the results.

For example, if you were researching the factors that influence consumer trust, you might have used a quantitative approach to identify the relationship between potential factors (e.g. perceived integrity and competence of the organisation) and consumer trust. In this case:

  • Your results chapter would just present the results of the statistical tests. For example, correlation results or differences between groups. In other words, the processed numbers.
  • Your discussion chapter would explain what the numbers mean in relation to your research question(s). For example, Factor 1 has a weak relationship with consumer trust, while Factor 2 has a strong relationship.

Depending on the university and degree, these two chapters (results and discussion) are sometimes merged into one , so be sure to check with your institution what their preference is. Regardless of the chapter structure, this section is about presenting the findings of your research in a clear, easy to understand fashion.

Importantly, your discussion here needs to link back to your research questions (which you outlined in the introduction or literature review chapter). In other words, it needs to answer the key questions you asked (or at least attempt to answer them).

For example, if we look at the sample research topic:

In this case, the discussion section would clearly outline which factors seem to have a noteworthy influence on organisational trust. By doing so, they are answering the overarching question and fulfilling the purpose of the research .

Your discussion here needs to link back to your research questions. It needs to answer the key questions you asked in your introduction.

For more information about the results chapter , check out this post for qualitative studies and this post for quantitative studies .

Step 8: The Final Step Draw a conclusion and discuss the implications

Last but not least, you’ll need to wrap up your research with the conclusion chapter . In this chapter, you’ll bring your research full circle by highlighting the key findings of your study and explaining what the implications of these findings are.

What exactly are key findings? The key findings are those findings which directly relate to your original research questions and overall research objectives (which you discussed in your introduction chapter). The implications, on the other hand, explain what your findings mean for industry, or for research in your area.

Sticking with the consumer trust topic example, the conclusion might look something like this:

Key findings

This study set out to identify which factors influence consumer-based trust in British low-cost online equity brokerage firms. The results suggest that the following factors have a large impact on consumer trust:

While the following factors have a very limited impact on consumer trust:

Notably, within the 25-30 age groups, Factors E had a noticeably larger impact, which may be explained by…

Implications

The findings having noteworthy implications for British low-cost online equity brokers. Specifically:

The large impact of Factors X and Y implies that brokers need to consider….

The limited impact of Factor E implies that brokers need to…

As you can see, the conclusion chapter is basically explaining the “what” (what your study found) and the “so what?” (what the findings mean for the industry or research). This brings the study full circle and closes off the document.

In the final chapter, you’ll bring your research full circle by highlighting the key findings of your study and the implications thereof.

Let’s recap – how to write a dissertation or thesis

You’re still with me? Impressive! I know that this post was a long one, but hopefully you’ve learnt a thing or two about how to write a dissertation or thesis, and are now better equipped to start your own research.

To recap, the 8 steps to writing a quality dissertation (or thesis) are as follows:

  • Understand what a dissertation (or thesis) is – a research project that follows the research process.
  • Find a unique (original) and important research topic
  • Craft a convincing dissertation or thesis research proposal
  • Write a clear, compelling introduction chapter
  • Undertake a thorough review of the existing research and write up a literature review
  • Undertake your own research
  • Present and interpret your findings

Once you’ve wrapped up the core chapters, all that’s typically left is the abstract , reference list and appendices. As always, be sure to check with your university if they have any additional requirements in terms of structure or content.

Just listening to the name of the dissertation makes the student nervous. As writing a top-quality dissertation is a difficult task as it is a lengthy topic, requires a lot of research and understanding and is usually around 10,000 to 15000 words. Sometimes due to studies, unbalanced workload or lack of research and writing skill students look for dissertation submission from professional writers.

CAU Electronic Theses and Dissertation Submission (ETD) Policy

AUC Woodruff Library gathers and archives master’s theses and doctoral dissertations to ensure that the scholarly works of graduate students at Clark Atlanta University are preserved and accessible.

To electronically submit theses and dissertations, authors must garner approval from Graduate Education before gaining access to the ETD Submission Tool. Final versions of approved electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) should be uploaded as a word document and adhere to copyright as stated in Clark Atlanta University’s  Guidelines for Submitting Electronic Theses and Dissertations  on the  CAU Thesis & Dissertation Website .

Electronic theses and dissertations are freely available for viewing and downloading from the library’s institutional repository (RADAR). Authors wishing to restrict access can contact  [email protected]  to request an embargo. An embargo request indicates that an author does not wish to have their work accessible for a specified period of time.

For additional information contact:  [email protected]

Submitting to ProQuest

Once it is available online, you can self-submit your thesis or dissertation to ProQuest for inclusion in the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database, following this guide:

https://about.proquest.com/en/dissertations/

The AUC Woodruff Library does not submit theses or dissertations on behalf of students.

ETD Submission Workflow Guide

  • ETD Workflow - Submitter's Guide The guide walks CAU graduate students through the process of submitting and revising their electronic thesis or dissertation.
  • CAU ETD Submissions site - Follow the instructions in the guide above to submit your ETD using the CAU ETD Submissions website (OJS)

Embargo Policy

Embargo policy:.

The CAU Graduate program will  only  grant an embargo if a student: 1) has a publication deal or 2) has time-sensitive research with a governing agency. If either of these purposes are relevant, the student must provide the publication deal or governing agency that will be willing to provide a letter of support.

If there are further questions, contact:  [email protected]

What is an Embargo?

In academia, an "embargo" is a restriction placed on a thesis or dissertation that allows only the title, abstract, and citation information to be released to the public, while the full-text of work is kept hidden for a limited period of time. An Embargo typically lasts from one to five  years following the publication of a thesis or dissertation via the college or university's Institutional Repository. Since every school has a different set of rules about whether and how theses and dissertations can be embargoed, you are urged to contact the CAU Graduate Center for further information about the process and approval of an embargo request. Most theses and dissertations are not embargoed, and are made publicly available following their formal defense as part of completing a masters or doctoral degree.

Why Embargo a Thesis or Dissertation?

  • If the author plans to publish all or part of their thesis/dissertation in the future and knows that publishers in their field consider open access electronic thesis/dissertations to be a prior publication, an embargo might be an option. The author might be concerned that making the work public will interfere with this.
  • If the author's work is based on data generated through research that will support other publications from people on the research team, like the advisor. There might be embargo options for this situation.
  • If the author has previously published all or part of the thesis/dissertation, and the publisher is restricting public release of the work in some way.
  • If the thesis/dissertation contains research data covered by a nondisclosure agreement for a specified period of time.

Virtual success: ASU Graduate College’s new online defense process

In March 2020, as more than 200 graduate students were preparing to finish their degrees by defending their thesis or dissertation, Arizona State University switched to online instruction in response to the growing spread of COVID-19. According to ASU graduate policy at the time, all student defenses were to take place in person and the quick transition to online instruction left these students uncertain about the process for completing their defenses in time to graduate.

dissertation_spring_1

CSE PhD student, Md. Sadman Sakib, was selected by a university-level faculty committee to receive the Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Office of Graduate Studies at the University of South Florida for the summer semester of 2024. The competitive fellowship is for full-time PhD students focusing exclusively on their dissertation; this year, ten such fellowships were awarded across the university.

Sadman joined the CSE PhD program in the Fall of 2019 under the guidance of Dr. Yu Sun at the Robot Perception and Action Lab (RPAL).  He decided to pursue his PhD as early as his undergraduate years. “I was deeply intrigued by the prospect of conducting original research, having the chance to uncover new insights, and the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in my field.” said Sadman.

“My thesis work focuses on developing advanced task planning algorithms, allowing robots to easily handle different real-world situations. This would equip robots with the ability to autonomously devise and execute tasks effectively based on natural language instructions. We have found that creating multiple plans using LLM and merging them into a combined graph yields more accurate and optimal results. Further, including a knowledge graph, particularly the Functional Object Oriented Network (FOON), improves the overall performance.” said Sadman.

“Receiving this fellowship has been an incredible honor and a significant milestone in my academic journey. It not only validates the importance and potential impact of my research but also provides invaluable support and resources as I work towards completing my dissertation,” said Sadman.  “I am truly grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue my research with renewed commitment and focus.”

Lindsay Mueller

Lindsay Mueller MFA Studio Art ‘24

More about lindsay.

“I’m here to push my artistic practice so I have the energy, self-critique, and discipline to keep growing beyond graduation.”

As a child, Lindsay Mueller’s school art classes were supplemented by weekly classes taught by a neighbor, a local artist. “By high school I realized I could take it more seriously,” Mueller says. “I applied to some art schools in addition to non-art schools. I wasn’t sure how viable it was as a career—it wasn’t the most practical choice to make where I grew up.”

Mueller attended Boston University for a dual degree program in psychology and art. “I realized I could do both, but I spent most of my time in the school of visual arts and was involved in the community there.” After graduation, Mueller moved to Northern Virginia and became an arts coordinator at a retirement community, teaching classes and curating exhibitions. “It was helpful to have a community arts perspective, not just academic art.”

Since enrolling in the MFA program at AU, Mueller has focused on pushing her artistic practice. Her paintings have expanded to become more sculptural with three-dimensional surfaces. “I feel freer to use vibrant colors and to be more inventive in the work,” she says. Working alongside a close-knit cohort of students and professors has also helped Mueller grow as an artist. “They’re people I can really talk to after graduation. They care about my practice and are interested in what I’m doing—they’ve been generous.”

Mueller’s work is drawing attention. Last year, she won the Young Artist Award in the Bethesda Painting Awards, an annual juried art competition honoring accomplished painters in the area. Her work, Slow Collision , was featured in a group exhibition at Gallery B. While focusing on her painting, Mueller has continued to teach as an instructor at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Arlington, and as a TA at AU. “I love teaching—I get to exchange ideas with others,” she says.

Alexis Threatt

Alexis Threatt MS, Data Science

More about alexis.

"At AU, I met great, enthusiastic, and encouraging professors who genuinely cared about my well-being—and students who became some of my closest friends. AU fosters an environment in which I felt comfortable being myself. It challenged me and prepared me for the world."

Alexis Threatt grew up in an urban area surrounded by a series of parks filled with trees. It was her first inspiration for the work she now does on the Global Climate Change Team at the US Forest Service International Programs.

Alexis first got her foot in the door at the Forest Service while earning her MS in data science at AU. For her capstone, she landed a position as a program manager on the US Forest Service’s Africa and Middle East Team, managing its Mozambique and Angola Programs. “Both countries endure massive fires across the country, and I decided to pursue a comparison analysis of wildfires in two high-priority conserva tion areas called the Niassa Special Reserve in Mozambique and Mavinga National Park in Angola,” she explains.

Alexis is thrilled with her current job. And with her environmental science background and MS in data science , she has lots of choices for her future. She is looking ahead at the possibility of earning a PhD, continuing with her forestry and climate change work, and implementing her data science degree—and perhaps even pursuing a career as a foreign service officer or working at the United Nations in an environmental position.

Dissertation Defense Announcement for Amine Taoudi – 05/10/2024 at 3:00 PM

May 2, 2024

Thesis Title: Optimal Control and Navigation of Electrified and Unmanned Ground Vehicles with Bio-inspired and Optimization Approaches When: 05/10/2024 3:00 PM Where: Join conversation (microsoft.com) Passcode: fsccfC Candidate: Amine Taoudi Degree: Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering Committee Members: Dr. Chaomin Luo, Dr. Randolph F. Follet, Dr. Seundeog Choi, Dr. Masoud Karimi-Ghartemani

In recent years, significant progress has been made in autonomous robotics and the electrification of transportation, highlighting the growing importance of automation in daily life. Ensuring the safety and sustainability of automated systems necessitates the integration of intelligent algorithms capable of making astute decisions in uncertain circumstances. Autonomous robots possess considerable potential for efficiently performing intricate tasks, albeit reliant on intelligent algorithms. Moreover, enhancing the energy efficiency of transportation systems yields extensive benefits for the environment, economy, and society at large. Addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and resource depletion necessitates prioritizing energy efficiency in transportation to construct a more resilient and equitable future. This research delves into the development of bio-inspired neural dynamics, nature-inspired swarm intelligence, fuzzy logic, heuristic algorithms, and optimization techniques for optimal control and navigation of electrified and unmanned ground vehicles.

Drawing inspiration from biological systems, this research aims to enhance the performance of robots in dynamic and unstructured environments. The approach encompasses a hybrid bio-inspired method, leveraging the mathematical model of a biological neural system's membrane to facilitate smooth trajectory tracking and bounded velocities for a differential drive robot. Additionally, integration of a Leader-Slime Mold Algorithm (L-SMA) for global path optimization and a modified velocity obstacle (MVO) for local motion planning is pursued. A heuristic algorithm is also devised to enhance decision-making in uncertain and dynamic environments by coordinating actions among the L-SMA path planner, the MVO local motion planner, and the enhanced bio-inspired tracking controller. Furthermore, a real-time optimal predictive controller is proposed to address the energy management challenges of electrified vehicles while improving driveability and comfort. This predictive controller employs a linear parameter-varying model of an electrified vehicle, a custom-designed adaptive cost function, and fuzzy logic to adapt a subset of cost function weights. The integration of fuzzy logic and the adaptive predictive controller yields a convex optimization problem solved in real-time using an active-set solver. To further enhance the energy efficiency of the electrified vehicle, a particle swarm optimization enhanced model predictive controller is suggested as an adaptive cruise controller with superior energy efficiency and safety in vehicle-following scenarios. Through these integrated approaches, the aim is to advance the capabilities of autonomous robotics and electrified transportation systems, thereby contributing to safer, more efficient, and sustainable mobility solutions.

Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson missing during surfing trip in Baja California in Mexico

The WA premier has described as "distressing" reports two Perth brothers have disappeared while on a camping and surfing trip in northern Mexico.

Jake and Callum Robinson, both aged in their 30s, failed to arrive at holiday accommodation in the city of Rosarito.

It's understood they were surfing and camping at the popular surfing spot Punta San Jose near the city of Ensanada.

They were believed to be travelling with Jack Carter Rhoad, who is an American citizen and is also missing.

Their mother Debra Robinson has appealed for information on social media.

"They have not contacted us since April 27 ... they are travelling with another friend; an American citizen," the social media post reads.

"Callum is a Type 1 diabetic so there is also a medical concern.

"Please contact me if you have seen them or know their whereabouts."

In a statement, Ms Robinson said the family continued to hope the brothers would be located.

"We sincerely appreciate everyone's concern and thoughts at this time. We continue to have hope that our two beautiful boys are found."

"It is a deeply distressing time for us and we ask the media to respect our privacy at this time."

Reports of woman in custody

Local media reported while searching for the men around La Bocana, authorities discovered one of the trio's phones had been switched on around an hour's drive of where the men were last seen.

"A woman … about 25 years old … was detained in possession of it [in the upper part of Maneadero]," reporter Mario Muñoz told the ABC, citing local police sources.

He said she was also found carrying drugs and would be handed over to the state attorney general's office.

"The state prosecutor's office will investigate the disappearance of the three tourists," Mr Muñoz said.

Mr Munoz supplied the ABC with pictures of the area in Punta San José where police are searching.

The ABC has contacted local and state police to confirm this information.

Social media posts stop

A friend of the brothers, Dan, said social media updates from the pair stopped at the weekend.

"Callum lives over in America and Jake was visiting and [they] sort of posted fairly regularly about their trip up until the weekend," he told ABC Radio Perth.

"They haven't actually checked into where they were meant to be on Saturday, and no one's been able to get in contact with them since.

"We believe Callum was due back at work last week and hasn't shown up … so obviously friends and family are quite concerned."

"I think everyone's just sort of hoping that we can spread the word for anyone that has any contacts in America or around that area that might be able to put the word out.

"I believe that Jake and Callum's parents are trying to get a flight over there now."

'Very worrying': premier

Premier Roger Cook said he was aware of the situation and described it as "really quite distressing".

"This must be very worrying for the families involved," he said.

"When we do send our young men and women overseas to enjoy that adventure holiday, they invite an element of risk.

"I understand one of the individuals has a medical condition that would need ongoing care.

"I share [the] concerns of all Western Australians in terms of their welfare."

'High degree of caution': Travel advice

According to an online lacrosse profile, Callum Robinson attended high school at Sacred Heart College in Perth before travelling to the United States to play college lacrosse.

Lacrosse Australia has released a statement expressing concern over the disappearance.

"We urge the Australian (and global) lacrosse family to continue sharing the post from Callum's friends and family … in the hope that Callum, Jake and Jack are found safe and sound," it said.

Both brothers have regularly posted images of their travels to social media.

Cars parked along a rocky cliff face in Mexico

In 2015, Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were murdered while travelling through Mexico in a camper van.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of the two Australians.

"Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment," its statement said.

The Department's latest travel advice for Mexico is for people to exercise a high degree of caution due to the threat of violent crime.

The advice said Mexican government statistics show Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo have reported significant increases in drug-related violence, particularly murder.

Baja California Sur and Baja California are among the states with the highest homicide rates.
