We also want to promote the Hugo’s Bar and Restaurant as a true community bar and restaurant, and we will look into charity promotions and other events where we can put something good back into the community. Whether it is giving a local charity somewhere to hold an event, or holding a special lunch club for elderly local residents, we want to portray a caring and welcoming image.

Distribution

We will sell directly through the bar and restaurant. We will also offer birthday party packages.

We would be taking over an already established business. Before taking over, we would want to have a set plan of action in place for any improvements we would like to make. For example, we would like to have seasonal lunch and dinner menus devised in advance so that we can publish these on our website and through our social media channels. We would also like to have set out our regular events and promotions and to have advertising arranged for each of these events so that we can get the word out in advance of each event taking place.

It is especially well known for its excellent food and drink menus, and for its large garden during the summer months. The exterior of the bar and restaurant is attractive and welcoming, and offers a clean and modern look and good kerb appeal. There are also good parking facilities.

The bar and restaurant is also known for its excellent staff and service, and this is apparent on TripAdvisor and other review sites. We would work hard to maintain this level of service, and to make improvements where possible.

As with any business, there is always room for improvement. We feel there are a number of areas that we could work on immediately, and which would take minimal focused effort to achieve and improve.

We would first turn our attention to the food menus, offering a good set price kids menu, and also gluten-free options on a separate menu. We would also review gluten-free food prep in the kitchen, ensuring we have a separate fryer for chips and other foods that need to be cooked separately.

Food service times are currently too short, and we feel the bar and restaurant is missing out on profits during these times.

The bar and restaurant is currently closed on Monday, and this is an entire day where the bar and restaurant is missing out on local trade and trade from people visiting the area.

The patio area is not currently used to its full potential, and we would like to improve this area to make it more appealing and more suitable for a range of uses.

Social media channels are not being updated. The last Twitter update was almost six months ago, and this is a big area we would like to address. The website also needs attention.

Opportunities

There are many opportunities for improvement. In addition to the improvements we have already listed, we would like to focus on seasonal opportunities such as Christmas, New Year and Mother’s Day and advertise these events and promotions well so that we achieve maximum covers in the restaurant and excellent profits from our wet menu.

There is a real opportunity for us to appeal to more groups of customers, and to open up new revenue streams. For example, our aim is to have at least one kid’s birthday party booked every weekend, and to have more parents popping with their kids after school. There are also opportunities for us to improve our food menu, to make it more available during the week, and to publicise our menu and any special offers across our website and social media.

We also want to welcome our more elderly residents, and give them somewhere to visit on a weekly or monthly basis for a warm meal and a friendly atmosphere.

It is essential that we maintain the Hugo’s Bar and Restaurant’s already excellent reputation, and that we make improvements carefully and in the right way. One bad TripAdvisor review could be very damaging, so we will do everything in our power to attract the best reviews and word of mouth recommendations. Any failures in service will be dealt with immediately, and any poor reviews replied to and addressed in the best way possible, offering compensation where necessary.

For example, some are more well known for a lively sports crowd, and well-placed near to public transport links where there is good footfall from visitors.

We offer a range of good quality beverages backed by the outstanding ABC brand, and we offer a fresh, seasonal and local menu cooked and presented to perfection. How to write a business plan for a sports bar.

If you want to start a sports bar or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below are links to each section of your sports bar business plan template:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of sports bar you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a sports bar that you would like to grow, or are you operating sports bars in multiple markets?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the sports bar industry. Discuss the type of sports bar you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.  

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of sports bar you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of sports bars:

  • Neighborhood Sports Bar : this type of sports bar focuses on one property located in a median income neighborhood and usually sells alcoholic beverages at a low price to attract repeat customers.
  • High End Sports Bar: this type of business is usually located in a high end area of town adjacent to multiple other restaurants and entertainment districts. They are oftentimes located in the downtown area.
  • Franchise Sports Bar: this type of sports bar is a popular franchise with proven success in similar markets.

In addition to explaining the type of sports bar you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of customers served, number of positive reviews, profit growth, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the sports bar industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the sports bar industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your sports bar business plan:

  • How big is the sports bar industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your sports bar? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your sports bar business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: sports fans, office workers, blue collar workers and college students.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of sports bar you operate. Clearly, prospective customers would respond to different marketing promotions than college students, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most sports bars primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other sports bars.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes restaurants and other types of bars. You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other sports bars with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be sports bars located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ business, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of alcoholic beverages do they sell?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide a better sports bar atmosphere?
  • Will you provide products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a sports bar business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of sports bar company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to a sports bar, will you provide food or pool tables?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your sports bar company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your sports bar located in a busy retail district, shopping plaza, mall, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your sports bar marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your sports bar, including bar set up and cleaning, alcohol inventory, serving patrons, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 5,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your sports bar to a new city.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your sports bar’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing sports bars. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing bars, restaurants or successfully running small businesses .  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 500 patrons per month or per quarter ? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your sports bar, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a sports bar:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment, inventory and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your sports bar location lease or the bar menu that you are planning to serve.   Summary Putting together a business plan for your sports bar is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the sports bar industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful sports bar.

How DLA Piper Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Generative AI

Loren Brown is the rare law firm leader I’ve spoken with who can articulate a business plan around generative artificial intelligence.

The US vice chair of DLA Piper has a strategy to capture new, AI-related work today while investing in people and technologies that could build the future firm that many lawyers find so distressing.

Most law firm leaders fret that AI will wreak havoc on their prevailing business model—charging hefty sums for lawyers’ time.

Brown is not sanguine about that. He sees a future where lawyers are more efficient with the help of new technology, and law firms shift toward a value-based billing system. But he also believes that AI-driven business models will spin up enough legal matters on their own to make up for the work taken away by more efficient machines, something he calls his “net effect theory.”

“If your business model is based on charging more than $1,000 an hour for very routine work that could be automated quite easily, then that’s not a very good business model to begin with,” Brown said in an interview. “We all have to prepare for the likelihood that the more routine aspects of our business will be the most disrupted by technology. And we’re perfectly comfortable with that.”

Brown acknowledged there’s fear in the legal industry around how AI will threaten the law firm business model. He believes the adoption of AI tools will never replace the need for great lawyers. He also says lawyers will soon compete based not just on reputation and relationships, but also their ability to utilize technology to deliver services that humans alone can’t provide.

“If our firm and a competitor firm go to market with equally great lawyers, but we have unique access to AI products that drive insights beyond the reach of the competitor firm,” Brown said, “we think that tilts the market in our favor.”

Hiring the Right Experts

Brown’s first step is for DLA Piper to be the leading defender of AI algorithms in courtrooms and with government regulators.

To accomplish this, he says it is vital the law firm employ data scientists and experts who understand how AI works. The first of those hires came in 2018, when Brown led the effort to recruit Danny Tobey. The Yale-trained lawyer has a medical degree and founded a software startup that was purchased by Wolters Kluwer (he’s also written novels).

Tobey, who’s now chair of the AI and data analytics practice at DLA Piper, had been thinking about the legal consequences of the technology long before ChatGPT was rolled out in late 2022. He authored a 2018 paper that considered whether software companies could lose legal protections from malpractice claims as AI advanced. Tobey warned at the time that the technology was “replacing the very professionals already subject to professional liability.”

DLA Piper in early 2023 hired a team of more than 10 data scientists from Faegre Drinker, led by Bennett Borden, a lawyer and data scientist who’s helped the firm build a business testing AI models for bias.

Law firms are a good venue for that kind of technical work thanks, in part, to attorney-client privilege, which can protect results of efforts to obtain bad outcomes from the algorithms.

“Really understanding how these models work is core to defending the models,” Tobey said in an interview. “You can’t defend them if you don’t understand their true mechanism of action. So being on the forefront of that litigation is the issue of the day.”

Defending AI in Court, Congress

Brown said the firm’s AI-related work is currently generating revenue in the eight figures, noting the group’s growth has been “exponential.” DLA Piper is the third largest law firm in the US by revenue, bringing in $3.8 billion in 2023, according to data from The American Lawyer.

DLA Piper has already racked up appearances in early cases alleging injuries caused by large language models (LLMs).

The firm is defending Microsoft in a lawsuit alleging its Bing search engine defamed an author when an AI-generated blurb mistakenly said he’d been sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy. That sentence had been given to someone with a similar name, according to the complaint.

The firm is also defending OpenAI in a defamation case brought by a conservative radio host in Georgia who claims ChatGPT made false claims that he embezzled money from a gun-rights organization.

DLA Piper appears to have a close relationship with OpenAI, which unleashed the fervor around generative AI when it released ChatGPT in 2022. The firm was hired last November by the Sam Altman-led company to lobby Congress on AI-related legislation, pulling in $180,000 over the past two quarters, according to Senate disclosures.

DLA Piper advised Altman on his testimony before Congress last fall, reported Politico, with a DLA Piper spokeswoman confirming the law firm “provides strategic advice to the company on a variety of topics.”

The firm has also done lobbying work on behalf of PathAI, a medical research company using AI, and Pindrop Security Inc., which develops security products to guard against deepfakes, Senate disclosures show.

Building New Products

Bringing in revenue from that more traditional business today helps Brown convince his fellow firm leaders that investments in building AI-fueled legal work products will pay off.

Brown and Tobey are cautious about where they build such products, noting a law firm can’t invest in the same ways as legal tech companies or large consulting firms.

While technology will make some traditional processes more efficient, they are trying to build products that, paired with human advice, deliver new types of insights. And they’re targeting areas of work that are already amenable to alternative billing structures, such as low-margin practices.

One recent example is a “proactive compliance” tool that sifts through employees’ unstructured communications to flag potential breaches of anti-bribery or other laws. The tool was trained on statutes such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act with longtime legal experts in the field involved.

The firm concluded a trial run of the tool with a major client recently, Tobey said, and the company’s head of investigations reported it caught issues that without intervention could have turned into expensive internal investigations.

“That’s an example of an exciting way to use AI that’s not automating something people already do,” Tobey said. “It’s creating new value.”

Tools like that bring law firms into a new business: Preventing legal issues, rather than using human time to solve them. If such tools are adopted more broadly, it could impact firms’ leverage models. Fewer associates might be needed, for example, if more investigations are staved off by proactive tools.

Tobey said the firm is working with its pricing team to develop strategies for selling things like the proactive compliance product. So far, he said the economics are “incredibly valuable to the client and incredibly good for us.”

Credit card hardship programs: What to know about this debt relief option

Right now, many people are finding themselves in a precarious financial position as they struggle to keep up with their high-interest credit card debt . And, much of that financial strain is being caused by persistent inflation and the elevated interest rates meant to temper it. 

While the inflation rate is significantly lower right now than it was at its peak , the latest inflation report shows that prices increased again in March 2024, reaching 3.5% — up slightly from 3.2% the previous month. And, due to the ongoing inflation issues, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at a 23-year high , causing rates to rise and making it increasingly difficult for people to manage their debts.

Against this backdrop, credit card hardship programs have become an increasingly important lifeline for those facing temporary, but substantial, financial difficulties. These programs were created to help cardholders avoid defaulting on their credit card debts , but what are they exactly — and what are the alternatives to consider? Let's find out.

What to know about credit card hardship programs

Credit card hardship programs can offer a lifeline to cardholders who are facing temporary financial difficulties and are unable to make even the minimum payments on what they owe. These programs, offered by credit card issuers, are meant to keep cardholders from missing payments or defaulting entirely on their credit card debts .

The specifics of credit card hardship programs can vary by issuer. In general, though, these programs typically offer certain types of relief to cardholders, including temporarily reduced minimum monthly payments , lower interest rates or even a complete suspension of interest charges for a set period, typically ranging from six to 24 months. The goal is to provide short-term relief to help the cardholder get through a difficult financial period, such as a job loss, medical emergency or another type of unexpected issue.

To enroll in a credit card hardship program, cardholders must typically contact their credit card issuer and provide documentation of their financial hardship. This may include proof of job loss, medical bills or other evidence that they are genuinely experiencing a temporary financial crisis. The credit card issuer will then review the cardholder's financial situation and determine if they qualify for the hardship program. If approved, the cardholder's credit card account will be placed in a "hardship" status, which means they will receive temporary relief from their normal credit card terms. 

It's important to note, though, that while credit card hardship programs can provide much-needed relief, they are not a long-term solution to debt problems. Cardholders typically must still make at least reduced monthly payments during the hardship period, and the program will eventually come to an end. At that point, the cardholder will need to resume making their regular monthly payments, which may be higher than before due to any interest that accrued during the hardship period.

How to qualify for a credit card hardship program

Each lender has a unique set of requirements for borrowers who need assistance . That said, to qualify for a credit card hardship program, cardholders will typically need to meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate a genuine financial hardship: This may include job loss, reduced income, medical expenses or other unexpected financial emergencies.
  • Provide documentation: Cardholders will need to submit proof of their financial hardship, such as pay stubs, medical bills or unemployment documents.
  • Be in good standing: Most credit card issuers require that the cardholder's account be in good standing prior to the hardship, with no late payments or other delinquencies.
  • Agree to a payment plan: As part of the hardship program, the cardholder will need to agree to a revised payment plan, which may include reduced monthly payments or a temporary suspension of interest charges.

It's important to note that not all credit card issuers offer hardship programs, and the terms and eligibility requirements can vary widely. Cardholders should contact their credit card issuer directly to inquire about their specific hardship program and the documentation required.

Alternatives to credit card hardship programs

While credit card hardship programs can provide temporary relief, they may not be the best long-term solution for everyone. And, not everyone will qualify for assistance, so it's important to understand the other options available in these circumstances. If you're unable to get help from your lender's credit card hardship program, here are some alternative debt relief options to consider:

  • Debt management programs: These programs, offered by debt relief companies and some non-profit agencies, can help negotiate with creditors to lower interest rates, reduce monthly payments and consolidate multiple debts into a single, more manageable payment. Debt management programs typically require the cardholder to close their credit card accounts, but they can provide a structured path to becoming debt-free.
  • Debt forgiveness programs: Debt relief companies also offer debt settlement or debt forgiveness programs , in which an expert negotiates with your lenders to settle what you owe for less than your current balance. In other words, the debt relief service works with your credit card issuers to get them to forgive a portion of the outstanding debt. This is typically a last resort option, however, as it can have a big impact on your credit score, and the forgiven debt may be considered taxable income.
  • Debt consolidation programs:   Debt consolidation programs allow cardholders to combine multiple debts into a single, lower-interest loan, which can simplify the repayment process and potentially lower the overall interest costs.
  • Debt consolidation loans:  When you use a debt consolidation loan for debt relief, you take out a new loan to pay off multiple credit card balances. This can provide a lower interest rate and a fixed repayment period, making it easier to manage the debt.
  • Bankruptcy: For those facing overwhelming debt, bankruptcy may be a viable option. There are two main types of consumer bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Chapter 7 bankruptcy involves the liquidation of assets to pay off debts, while Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows for a court-supervised repayment plan.

The bottom line

A credit card hardship program can be a big help to cardholders who are facing temporary financial hardships and are unable to make their credit card payments. However, not everyone will qualify for this type of assistance, so it's important to understand what the alternatives are, and which ones make more sense for you. After all, each alternative has its own set of implications, and the best choice will depend on the nuances of your financial situation and your long-term money goals.

An ‘all-inclusive entertainment haven,’ with dance floor, roof deck

D.C.’s newest LGBTQ+ bar called Crush is scheduled to open for business at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19, in a spacious, two-story building with a dance floor and roof deck at 2007 14th St., N.W. in one of the city’s bustling nightlife areas.

A statement released by co-owners Stephen Rutgers and Mark Rutstein earlier this year says the new bar will provide an atmosphere that blends “nostalgia with contemporary nightlife” in a building that was home to a popular music store and radio supply shop.

Rutgers said the opening comes one day after Crush received final approval of its liquor license that was transferred from the Owl Room, a bar that operated in the same building before closing Dec. 31 of last year. The official opening also comes three days after Crush hosted a pre-opening reception for family, friends, and community members on Tuesday, April 16.

Among those attending, Rutgers said, were officials with several prominent local LGBTQ organizations, including officials with the DC Center for the LGBTQ Community, which is located across the street from Crush in the city’s Reeves Center municipal building. Also attending were Japer Bowles, director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, and Salah Czapary, director of the Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture.  

Rutgers said Crush plans to hold a grand opening event in a few weeks after he, Rutstein and the bar’s employees become settled into their newly opened operations.

“Step into a venue where inclusivity isn’t just a promise but a vibrant reality,” a statement posted on the Crush website says. “Imagine an all-inclusive entertainment haven where diversity isn’t just celebrated, it’s embraced as the very heartbeat of our venue,” the statement says. “Welcome to a place where love knows no bounds, and the only color or preference that matters is the vibrant tapestry of humanity itself. Welcome to Crush.”

The website says Crush will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m., Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. It will be closed on Mondays.

I thought to myself that if it had been the Homosexuals of the Mid-Atlantic I would’ve had my gaydar to rely on. Was there even such a thing as ace-dar?

As it turned out, the asexual kite the group had meant to fly was a little too pesky to pilot. “Have you ever used a stunt kite?” Bonnie, the event organizer asked me. “I bought one. It looked really cool. But I can’t make it work.” She sighed. “I can’t get the thing six feet off the ground.” The group hardly seemed to care. There was caramel popcorn and cookies, board games and head massages, a game of charades with more than its fair share of Pokémon. The kites up above might as well have been a coincidental sideshow. Nearly two dozen folks filtered in and out of the picnic throughout the course of the day.

But I counted myself lucky that Bonnie picked me out of the crowd. If there’s such a thing as ace-dar, it eludes asexuals too. The online forum for all matters asexual, AVEN, or the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, is filled with laments: “I don’t think it’s possible.” “Dude, I wish I had an ace-dar.” “If it exists, I don’t have it.” “I think this is just like a broken clock is right twice a day type thing.” What seems to be a more common experience is meeting someone you just click with—only to find out later that they’re asexual. A few of the folks I met described how close childhood friends of theirs likewise came out in adulthood, a phenomenon that will be familiar to many queer people. But it is all the more astounding for asexuals to find each other this way, given that asexual people constitute 1.7% of sexual minorities in America , and so merely .1% of the population at large. 

To help other asexuals identify you out in the world, some folks wear a black ring on their middle finger, much as an earring on the right ear used to signify homosexuality in a less welcoming era. The only problem? The swinger community—with its definite non-asexuality—has also adopted the signal. “It’s still a thing,” said Emily Karp. “So some people wear their ace rings just to the ace meet-ups.” Karp has been the primary coordinator for the Asexuals and Aromantics of the Mid-Atlantic (AAMA) since 2021, and a member of the meet-up for a decade. She clicked with the group immediately. After showing up for a Fourth of July potluck in the mid-afternoon, she ended up staying past midnight. “We played Cards against Humanity, which was a very, very fun thing to do. It’s funny in a way that’s different than if we were playing with people that weren’t ace. Some of the cards are implying, like, the person would be motivated by sex in a way that’s absurd, because we know they aren’t.” 

Where so many social organizations withered during the pandemic, the AAMA flourished. Today, it boasts almost 2,000 members on meetup.com. Karp hypothesized that all the social isolation gave people copious time to reflect on themselves, and that the ease of meeting up online made it convenient as a way for people to explore their sexual identity and find community. Online events continue to make up about a third of the group’s meet-ups. The format allows people to participate who live farther out from D.C. And it allows people to participate at their preferred level of comfort: while many people participate much as they would at an in-person event, some prefer to watch anonymously, video feed off. Others prefer to participate in the chat box, though not in spoken conversation.

A recent online event was organized for a discussion of Rhaina Cohen’s book, “The Other Significant Others,” published in February. Cohen’s book discusses friendship as an alternative model for “significant others,” apart from the romantic model that is presupposed to be both the center and goal of people’s lives. The AAMA group received the book with enthusiasm. “It literally re-wired my brain,” as one person put it. People discussed the importance of friendship to their lives, and their difficulties in a world that de-prioritized friendship. “I can break up with a friend over text, and we don’t owe each other a conversation,” one said. But there was some disagreement when it came to the book’s discussion of romantic relationships. “It relegates ace relationships to the ‘friend’ or ‘platonic’ category, to the normie-reader,” one person wrote in the chat. “Our whole ace point is that we can have equivalent life relationships to allo people, simply without sex.” (“Allo” is shorthand for allosexual or alloromantic, people who do experience sexual or romantic attraction.)

The folks of the AAMA do not share a consensus on the importance of romantic relationships to their lives. Some asexuals identify as aromantic, some don’t. And some aromantics don’t identify as asexual, either. The “Aromantic” in the title of the group is a relatively recent addition. In 2017, the group underwent a number of big changes. The group was marching for the first time in D.C. Pride, participating in the LGBTQ Creating Change conference, and developing a separate advocacy and activism arm. Moreover, the group had become large enough that discussions were opened up into forming separate chapters for D.C., Central Virginia, and Baltimore. During those discussions, the group leadership realized that aromantic people who also identified as allosexual didn’t really have a space to call their own. “We were thinking it would be good to probably change the name of the Meetup group,” Emily said. “But we were not 100% sure. Because [there were] like 1,000 people in the group, and they’re all aces, and it’s like, ‘Do you really want to add a non-ace person?’” The group leadership decided to err on the side of inclusion. “You know, being less gatekeep-y was better. It gave them a place to go — because there was nowhere else to go.”

The DC LGBT Center now sponsors a support group for both asexuals and aromantics, but it was formed just a short while ago, in 2022. The founder of the group originally sought out the center’s bisexual support group, since they didn’t have any resources for ace folks. “The organizer said, you know what, why don’t we just start an ace/aro group? Like, why don’t we just do it?” He laughed. “I was impressed with the turnout, the first call. It’s almost like we tapped into, like, a dam. You poke a hole in the dam, and the water just rushes out.” The group has a great deal of overlap with the AAMA, but it is often a person’s first point of contact with the asexual and aromantic community in D.C., especially since the group focuses on exploring what it means to be asexual. Someone new shows up at almost every meeting. “And I’m so grateful that I did,” one member said. “I kind of showed up and just trauma dumped, and everyone was really supportive.”

Since the ace and aro community is so small, even within the broader queer community, ace and aro folks often go unrecognized. To the chagrin of many, the White House will write up fact sheets about the LGBTQI+ community, which is odd, given that when the “I” is added to the acronym, the “A” is usually added too. OKCupid has 22 genders and 12 orientations on its dating website, but “aromantic” is not one of them — presumably because aromantic people don’t want anything out of dating. And since asexuality and aromanticism are defined by the absence of things, it can seem to others like ace and aro people are ‘missing something.’ One member of the LGBT center support group had an interesting response. “The space is filled by… whatever else!” they said.  “We’re not doing a relationship ‘without that thing.’ We’re doing a full scale relationship — as it makes sense to us.”

Bowser budget proposal calls for $5.25 million for 2025 World Pride

AIDS office among agencies facing cuts due to revenue shortfall

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s proposed fiscal year 2025 budget includes a request for $5.25 million in funding to support the June 2025 World Pride celebration, which D.C. will host, and which is expected to bring three million or more visitors to the city.

The mayor’s proposed budget, which she presented to the D.C. Council for approval earlier this month, also calls for a 7.6 percent increase in funding for the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, which amounts to an increase of $132,000 and would bring the office’s total funding to $1.7 million. The office, among other things, provides grants to local organizations that provide  services to the LGBTQ community.

Among the other LGBTQ-related funding requests in the mayor’s proposed budget is a call to continue the annual funding of $600,000 to provide workforce development services for transgender and gender non-conforming city residents “experiencing homelessness and housing instability.” The budget proposal also calls for a separate allocation of $600,000 in new funding to support a new Advanced Technical Center at the Whitman-Walker Health’s Max Robinson Center in Ward 8.

Among the city agencies facing funding cuts under the mayor’s proposed budget is the HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Disease, and Tuberculosis Administration, known as HAHSTA, which is an arm of the D.C. Department of Health. LGBTQ and AIDS activists have said HAHSTA plays an important role in the city’s HIV prevention and support services. Observers familiar with the agency have said it recently lost federal funding, which the city would have to decide whether to replace.

“We weren’t able to cover the loss of federal funds for HAHSTA with local funds,” Japer  Bowles, director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, told the Washington Blade. “But we are working with partners to identify resources to fill those funding  gaps,” Bowles said.

The total proposed budget of $21 billion that Bowser submitted to the D.C. Council includes about $500 million in proposed cuts in various city programs that the mayor said was needed to offset a projected $700 million loss in revenue due, among other things, to an end in pandemic era federal funding and commercial office vacancies also brought about by the post pandemic commercial property and office changes.

Bowser’s budget proposal also includes some tax increases limited to sales and business-related taxes, including an additional fee on hotel bookings to offset the expected revenue losses. The mayor said she chose not to propose an increase in income tax or property taxes.

Earlier this year, the D.C. LGBTQ+ Budget Coalition, which consists of several local LGBTQ advocacy organizations, submitted its own fiscal year 2025 budget proposal to both Bowser and the D.C. Council. In a 14-page letter the coalition outlined in detail a wide range of funding proposals, including housing support for LGBTQ youth and LGBTQ seniors; support for LGBTQ youth homeless services; workforce and employment services for transgender and gender non-conforming residents; and harm reduction centers to address the rise in drug overdose deaths.

Another one of the coalition’s proposals is $1.5 million in city funding for the completion of the D.C. Center for the LGBTQ Community’s new building, a former warehouse building in the city’s Shaw neighborhood that is undergoing a build out and renovation to accommodate the LGBTQ Center’s plans to move in later this year. The coalition’s budget proposal also calls for an additional $300,000 in “recurring” city funding for the LGBTQ Center in subsequent years “to support ongoing operational costs and programmatic initiatives.”

Bowles noted that Bowser authorized and approved a $1 million grant for the LGBTQ Center’s new building last year but was unable to provide additional funding requested by the budget coalition for the LGBTQ Center for fiscal year 2025.

“We’re still in this with them,” Bowles said. “We’re still looking and working with them to identify funding.”

The total amount of funding that the LGBTQ+ Budget Coalition listed in its letter to the mayor and Council associated with its requests for specific LGBTQ programs comes to $43.1 million.

Heidi Ellis, who serves as coordinator of the coalition, said the coalition succeeded in getting some of its proposals included in the mayor’s budget but couldn’t immediately provide specific amounts.  

“There are a couple of areas I would argue we had wins,” Ellis told the Blade. “We were able to maintain funding across different housing services, specifically around youth services that affect folks like SMYAL and Wanda Alston.” She was referring to the LGBTQ youth services group SMYAL and the LGBTQ organization Wanda Alston Foundation, which provides housing for homeless LGBTQ youth.

“We were also able to secure funding for the transgender, gender non-conforming workforce program,” she said. “We also had funding for migrant services that we’ve been advocating for and some wins on language access,” said Ellis, referring to programs assisting LGBTQ people and others who are immigrants and aren’t fluent in speaking English.

Ellis said that although the coalition’s letter sent to the mayor and Council had funding proposals that totaled $43.1 million, she said the coalition used those numbers as examples for programs and policies that it believes would be highly beneficial to those in the LGBTQ community in need.

 “I would say to distill it down to just we ask for $43 million or whatever, that’s not an accurate picture of what we’re asking for,” she said. “We’re asking for major investments around a few areas – housing, healthcare, language access. And for capital investments to make sure the D.C. Center can open,” she said. “It’s not like a narrative about the dollar amounts. It’s more like where we’re trying to go.”

The Blade couldn’t’ immediately determine how much of the coalition’s funding proposals are included in the Bowser budget. The mayor’s press secretary, Daniel Gleick, told the Blade in an email that those funding levels may not have been determined by city agencies.

“As for specific funding levels for programs that may impact the LGBTQ community, such as individual health programs through the Department of Health, it is too soon in the budget process to determine potential adjustments on individual programs run though city agencies,” Gleick said.

But Bowles said several of the programs funded in the mayor’s budget proposal that are not LGBTQ specific will be supportive of LGBTQ programs. Among them, he said, is the budget’s proposal for an increase of $350,000 in funding for senior villages operated by local nonprofit organizations that help support seniors. Asked if that type of program could help LGBTQ seniors, Bowles said, “Absolutely – that’s definitely a vehicle for LGBTQ senior services.”

He said among the programs the increased funding for the mayor’s LGBTQ Affairs office will support is its ongoing cultural competency training for D.C. government employees. He said he and other office staff members conduct the trainings about LGBTQ-related issues at city departments and agencies.

Bowser herself suggested during an April 19 press conference that local businesses, including LGBTQ businesses and organizations, could benefit from a newly launched city “Pop-Up Permit Program” that greatly shortens the time it takes to open a business in vacant storefront buildings in the downtown area.

Bowser and Nina Albert, D.C. Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, suggested the new expedited city program for approving permits to open shops and small businesses in vacant storefront spaces could come into play next year when D.C. hosts World Pride, one of the word’s largest LGBTQ events.

“While we know that all special events are important, there is an especially big one coming to Washington, D.C. next year,” Bowser said at the press conference. “And to that point, we proposed a $5.25 million investment to support World Pride 2025,” she said, adding, “It’s going to be pretty great. And so, we’re already thinking about how we can include D.C. entrepreneurs, how we’re going to include artists, how we’re going to celebrate across all eight wards of our city as well,” she said.

Among those attending the press conference were officials of D.C.’s Capital Pride Alliance, which will play a lead role in organizing World Pride 2025 events.

Taste of Point returns at critical time for queer students

The Point Foundation will kick off May with its annual Taste of Point DC event. The event will be hosted at Room & Board on 14th Street and feature a silent auction, food tastings, a speech from a scholar, and more. 

Point’s chief of staff, Kevin Wright, said that at Taste of Point, the scholars are the star of the show.

“People never come to an event to hear Point staff speak, they come to hear from the people most impacted by the program,” he said. “At its core Taste of Point is designed to center and highlight our scholars’ voices and experiences.”

This year, a Point BIPOC Scholar, Katherine Guerrero Rivera will speak at the event. 

“It is a great opportunity to highlight the scholars out there on the front lines making impacts in almost every sector and job field,” Wright said. 

Wright pointed out that this year especially is a pivotal time for LGBTQ students. 

“In 2023, there were 20 states that passed anti-LGBTQ legislation,” he said. “By this point in [2024] we already have more.”

Wright said the impacts of those legislative attacks are far reaching and that Point is continuously monitoring the impact they have on students on the ground. 

Last month, The Washington Post reported that states with anti-LGBTQ laws in place saw school hate crimes quadruple. This report came a month after a non-binary student, Nex Bennedict, died after being attacked at school. 

“So, we see this as a critical moment to really step up and help students who are facing these challenges on their campus,” Wright said. “Our mission is to continue to empower our scholars to achieve their full academic and leadership potential.” 

This year Point awarded nearly 600 LGBTQ students with scholarships. These include the flagship scholarship, community college scholarship and the BIPOC scholarship. When the foundation started in 2002, there were only eight scholarships awarded. 

Dr. Harjant Gill is one of those scholars who said the scholarship was pivotal for him. Gill said he spent his undergraduate years creating films and doing activism for the LGBTQ community. 

As a result, his academic record wasn’t stellar and although he was admitted into American University’s graduate program he had no clue how he would fund it. 

Upon arrival to American he was told to apply for a Point scholarship and the rest was history.

“It ended up being the one thing that kept me going otherwise I would have dropped out,” he said. “Point was incredibly instrumental in my journey to becoming an academic and a professor.”

More than a decade later, Gill serves on the host committee for Taste of Point and is a mentor to young Point scholars. He said that he donates money yearly to Point and that when he is asked what he wants for a gift he will often tell his friends to donate too.

A new Wilmington wine bar is coming this fall in the site of a former comedy club

A new wine bar next to FranksWine shop in Wilmington is planned to open this fall on the site of a former comedy club.

Business/building owners Frank and Colleen Pagliaro say they hope to open Anura Wine Bar in October after renovating the interior and exterior of the space at 1206 N. Union St., near the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue. It had last been the home of the House of Laffs comedy lounge , which closed in November 2022.

The comedy club closed when the owner was evicted from the Wilmington building for failing to pay $270,000 in back rent and other fees such as legal, utilities, water and sewage, real estate tax and insurance.

Frank Pagliaro has owned the building that also houses his wine/liquor store for 37 years. It was known as Wilmington's longest-running nightclub spot and was once the home of The Alley.

Pagliaro has leased out the 6,500-square-foot space to 12 tenants over the years — the best-known nightclub was probably the former Porky's Dance Club in the 1990s — and he said he no longer is interested in offering long-term leases.

Pagliaro said he and Colleen, a pediatric pharmacist who has worked in restaurants and as a bartender, gained the confidence to open a wine bar after the success of outdoor cafe events they hosted that included live music and food trucks in the parking lot of FranksWine shop during the pandemic.

The Anura name is a nod to the frog logo at FranksWine, known as Jeremiah. Anura refers to any of an order of amphibians comprising frogs, toads, and tree frogs.

The wine bar has a license to serve alcohol, and the Pagliaros plan to serve food. Since June 2023, the kitchen of the space has been used as a commissary by Chef Robbie Jester for his thriving catering business. Jester is known for winning competitions on the Food Network and the Netflix series "Pressure Cooker ."

The building was originally a bowling alley that opened in 1941. The space is getting a complete interior and exterior overhaul that includes remodeled restrooms, more space for kitchen preparation, a patio that's compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and a new bar that will offer a Cruvinet wine system similar to a beer tap.

"We're going to pull out everything and do it the right way," Pagliaro said, adding, "No nightclub."

He said the space could be opened before and after theater events in nearby downtown Wilmington and used for parties, wine tastings and pop-up events.

"There's no way to just do a wine bar and sustain it. We're going to have to have other events here," Pagliaro said.

Upcoming events that the Pagliaros say will give people a glimpse at what's coming this fall include a five-course May 17 wine dinner with food prepared by Jester and beverages from California Winery Owner & Winemaker Gus Kalaris of  Axios Napa Valley Winery .
