கேப்டன்: திரை விமர்சனம்

Captain movie review: Arya’s low-budget monster film bites more than it can chew

Captain is not as excruciating as director shakti soundar rajan’s previous ventures like miruthan or tik tik tik, but those are just poor yardsticks to measure films..

captain tamil movie review 2022

One can’t help but feel jealous of Shakti Soundar Rajan . I mean who else would get to make an uninspiring film in a new genre year after year? The director seems to revel in the idea of introducing a new genre to Tamil cinema fans. His sophomore project Naaigal Jaakirathai was touted to be the first Tamil film to feature a dog as the protagonist. Later, Miruthan was marketed as the first Tamil Zombie film, then came Tik Tik Tik, the first Tamil space film. Now, Captain , starring Arya, is brandished as the first Tamil creature film (which is debatable). Other than being sold as the ‘first’ of something, Rajan’s films share similar traits like rehashed plots, ineffective emotional beats, cardboard characters and predictable plots. Yet, at some level, these factors seem to be working for his films because nothing else explains the consistency of the director’s career. I would like to call the experience the pleasure of predictability, and Captain provides just that.

Vetri Selvan (Arya), an Army Captain, heads a team of five. An orphan, Vetri only has his team for a family. The team, which specialises in dealing with terrorist operations, is uncharacteristically tasked to scout an area named Sector 42, which touches the borders of China and Nepal. A previous attempt to scout the area resulted in casualties due to unknown reasons. The premise, with no room for doubts, is similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Predator (1987). Yet, what begins as an alien-invasion thriller takes a quick turn and becomes an eco-activist film. Maybe, that’s the only thing the viewer doesn’t see coming. But, the apparent twist was more silly and contrived than surprising.

captain tamil movie review 2022

There is nothing at stake in Captain. At least had Shakti followed the exact patterns of typical monster/creature films, Captain would have invoked a sense of empathy for the characters. There is not even a cursory scene that establishes the camaraderie of the team. Instead, it is all being told to us. The expositions are on the face. In one instance, Vetri realises that he is immune to the venom of the creature, which is pretty apparent from the visuals. However, Shakti’s regard for audience intelligence is negligible and he finds it necessary to convey the same as a dialogue.

There’s a huge fanbase for Asian creature films, but Captain doesn’t provide the thrill or invoke the disgust of such B-films. The visual effects were shockingly shoddy to make us fear the creatures. Also, they don’t go for the kill instantly, which removes a sense of immediate threat. Yet, one can see some thought has gone into creating the monsters and their biology. Shakti has ideas, but they don’t come through effectively in this low-budget monster film that bites more than it can chew.

Captain is a film written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan and produced by The Show People and Think Studios. The film stars Arya in the lead role while Simran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Kavya Shetty, Harish Uthaman and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by D Imman and the cinematography is handled by Yuva S.

Captain Vetri Selvan (Arya) is a soldier in the Indian Army. He and his team are assigned duty in Sector 42, a restricted forest area in North East India. They realise the presence of an extra-terrestrial creature in the area and are defeated by it as well. How they bounce back, defeat, and unravel the secrets about the creature forms the rest of the plot.

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan is credited with making a lot of 'first' films in Tamil. He made a zombie film, Miruthan, a space film - Tik Tik Tik. He also made Naaigal Jaakirathai and Teddy which has unique elements in it as well. With Captain, he has tried making a film on the Man vs Alien concept but the biggest issue here is that the writing is so generic.

Captain's plot and characters have some resemblance to his earlier films. The alien angle has also been treated like it's a horror film with plenty of jump scare like moments. For instance, whenever an important character turns away from the camera, the camera zooms into their face, and when they turn back at the camera, you see the alien pouncing on them.

There's a romantic angle between Arya and Aishwarya Lekshmi, but that never comes up in the film except the post climax scene. In a film that's just less than 2 hours long, portions like this make you feel the film is even longer. The screenplay has lags and the placement of songs doesn't help either.

Arya and his teammates in the army have worked well on their physique and look extremely fit. The performances could have been much better, the emotional scenes have a disconnect with the audience because of the limited range of expressions by the actors. Simran who plays the role of a scientist shines well, and makes the role look like a cakewalk.

D Imman's tries to breathe some life into the film with his background score which works well to an extent. The songs sound well when heard separately but slow down the film's pace heavily. While Yuva's cinematography is functional, offering the film what it exactly needs, the VFX could have been far better, especially the climax.

As a new attempt, Captain definitely deserves praise, but misses out on interesting screenplay and emotions. A lot of scenes are predictable because of which, when the twists are revealed they don't excite you enough affecting the engagement.

Captain Movie Review (2022)

Shakti soundar rajan's underwhelming 'captain' has arya fighting two enemies: aliens, and bad writing.

Captain Movie Review in English

Captain Movie Cast & Crew

Shakti Soundar Rajan likes the high concept. He likes to say “I directed the first zombie thriller in Tamil cinema”. (That was Miruthan .) He likes to say “I directed the first space adventure in Tamil cinema”. (That was Tik Tik Tik .) He likes to say “I directed the first 'giant talking bear' movie in Tamil cinema”. (That was Teddy .) With Captain , he'd have liked to say, "I directed the first alien movie in Tamil cinema" – but the MGR-Nambiar starrer Kalaiarasi got there first, and then we had Super Deluxe . But maybe Shakti Soundar Rajan can say this one thing: "I directed the first alien action movie in Tamil cinema." The creatures in this film behave like soldiers and they face off against soldiers of the Indian Army. Let the fireworks begin!

Or so we think. But it takes a good 45 minutes for the action to begin. Yes, every film needs some time to set up its world and its characters, but these people have the depth of a sheet of paper. Arya, the captain of the team, likes to read big books like The Art of War . As for the sole woman under his command, she is uncomfortable in a sari. The rest don't even get that one distinguishing trait, however lame that might be. And how do they bond as a team? Over cone ice-cream. Don't get me wrong. I love cone ice-cream. What I hate is messing with the sensibility of a film. Why not bond over weapons? Why not bond over a dead colleague? Why not bond about how scared this mission is making you feel? You have to take us into this world, not drag us out of it.

The story is a mix of the usual creature-features, like Alien or Predator – but without the scares, the tightly held atmosphere, the A-level visual effects. The aliens look like a man in a rubber suit while standing and while crouching, they resemble rabid dogs. And the mother alien appears to be another animal altogether, which made me laugh. I mean, remember the mother-creature in Aliens , when the Sigourney Weaver character enters her lair? Forget laughing, I don't think I breathed. Why not just follow those established templates, instead of saying "I am Tamil-ising this premise with a love song and a sort-of heroine played by Aishwarya Lekshmi"? Plus, this love song makes little sense when we learn something new about this woman at the end. So even by Tamil cinema rules, you are not doing it right.

The name of the Arya character is Vetri Selvan – you know, because he is in the Army and all that. For a change, wouldn't it be nice to have a soldier named Ramesh or Suresh? Simran plays a scientist – I think. The flat dialogues and the bad cuts to reaction shots are even scarier than the creatures, which aren't very scary in the first place. Vetri Selvan begins the films by reciting some rules about fighting. One, identify the enemy. Two, fight with the enemy. Three, identify the enemy's weakness. Wait! Wouldn't you want to identify the enemy's weakness before fighting with him or her or it? And later, if you capture one of the creatures and have it in a special lab, wouldn't you have someone monitoring the area all the time? In other words, like always, the real thing our protagonist ends up fighting is the screenplay. And sadly, no amount of Army firepower can overcome bad writing.

Captain Movie Review: Arya's film is poor man's Predator

Director shakti soundar rajan’s captain, starring arya, simran and aishwarya lekshmi, is an illogical-man-vs-creature film. this is a poor adaptation of hollywood films of the same genre with extra masala. read our review..

Listen to Story

Arya's Captain hit the theatres on September 8.

  • Captain is directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan.

  • Captain hit the theatres on September 8.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 film Predator is an iconic flick that still holds a special place in the hearts of cinephiles. Three decades later, director Shakti Soundar Rajan decided to Indian-ise the concept and deliver it as Captain. Throw in an unnecessary love angle and some other sentiments, and you get Captain. Voila!

Captain begins with an elaborate introduction of Army captain Vetri Selvan (Arya), who is an orphan. He says his team is his family and would go to any lengths to protect them. Though Vetri heads a team of military men and a woman, his actions during a mission are so slow that you wish to scream at the screen asking him to be a little quick. He is entrusted with the job of going into a restricted forest area, Sector 42, where people have died inexplicably. When he and his team venture into the forest, his friend Karthi Devan (Harish Uthaman) tries to shoot at him and his team, but eventually, shoots himself.

Enter scientist Dr Keerthi (Simran), who knows a little more about the forest than the military men. She says that the creature, which they call Minotaur, should be eliminated to begin the civilian movement on the site. Keerthi and Vetri, along with his team, now draft a plan to find the Minotaur, its history and the ideal way to defeat the creature(s).

Over the years, movie-goers have developed a habit of expecting something new from Shakti Soundar Rajan. All his films would be pegged as the ‘first Tamil cinema' to do this or that. With Captain, he has attempted the man vs creature concept. However ambitious Indian-ising the genre may sound, you need the budget to pull off this VFX-heavy concept. And that’s where Captain fails miserably.

The plot of Captain is wafer-thin and stuff that you have seen in age-old Tamil films and soap operas. Secondly, the VFX is shoddy and doesn’t give you the intended feel it was supposed. Thirdly, there are major logical loopholes that mess up the entire experience. For example, just a few minutes before the interval, Dr Keerthi, Vetri and his team are surrounded by so many Minotaurs and we are expecting a full-blown battle. But, as the second half begins, the team is back at the lab at the military base camp. Guess the Minotaurs decided to leave them unharmed so the film could go on for another 45 minutes.

After an impressive performance in Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai, it is excruciating to see Arya in this film. He holds one expression throughout the film and makes us think whether he’s a cardboard cut-out. Simran, who plays a grey-shaded character, delivers an underwhelming performance. A scene where people take a dig at her affair with her investor makes you squirm in your seats. It’s 2022, people!

Oh, there’s also Aishwarya Lekshmi in the film. The supporting characters played by Harish Uthaman, Kavya Shetty, Bharath Raj and Gokul are middling.

Captain sees Vetri and Keerthi get a breakthrough in finding the Minotaur’s head. While you expect the same creature, the director surprises you by showing a giant Octopus. Ummm, aren’t they different creatures?

Captain is an underwritten film which needed much more substance and attention to detail to capture the audience.

2 out of 5 stars for Captain. Published By: K Janani Published On: Sep 8, 2022 --- ENDS --- ALSO READ | Arya on Sarpatta Parambarai vs Toofaan, working with Pa Ranjith: Interview

Captain Movie Review: This creature feature is an all-round disappointment

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

You know what they’ll tell you when you express dislike for a film like Captain that follows in director Shakti Soundar Rajan’s long list of attempts to regionalise Hollywood genre films (space, zombie, teddy, and now, creature feature). Oh, come on, we don’t have the budget; at least, this is an attempt! What such responders don’t understand is that it’s not the bad CG that kills a film like Captain . Of course, with world cinema accessible at the click of a button, we don’t tolerate substandard CG anymore—and no, budgetary constraints ought not to be a topic really because theatres don’t exactly charge lesser for such films and neither do they offer snacks at subsidised prices because we have bought tickets for local, low-budget cinema. So, while the minotaur creature in this film doesn’t ever feel real—never walking, jumping, fighting, or reacting in a way that convinces you of its life—that’s not quite the problem with Captain . The problem is a more familiar demon: silly, superficial writing.

Director: Shakti Soundar Rajan

Cast: Arya, Simran, Harish Uttaman

And the performances don’t help either. Arya plays army man Vetriselvan, who’s introduced through a series of coordinated killing. Who are they killing? Is the killing justified? We are not supposed to ask such questions. It’s Vetriselvan and team killing for the country; so, we are supposed to try and enjoy the rush of patriotism coursing through our veins. For some reason, Arya seems like he’s interpreted the character as an emotionally stunted person—which ends up coming through as apathy in performance. In one scene, Vetri figures out an idea by overhearing a stray conversation—as we have seen happen a million times in such films—but the way the actor plays that scene, you would think it’s not a positive development. So, I wondered: What’s causing this unprocessed agony? Is it the unusual upbringing he had? Is he a bit of a loner like in his previous film with this director, Teddy ? But he has a gang of friends and colleagues he swears by? The film doesn’t ever tell us much about Vetri, except that he’s an army man and he prefers that all of us be patriotic. Those who aren’t, he believes, need to “grow up”.

For lack of any real understanding about this cold professional, you take in everything from a distance. There’s a half-hearted attempt to explore his friendship with a fallen officer (Harish Uthaman) and the need to repair his destroyed reputation, but given how little we know about Vetri himself, it’s hard to summon much love for his friend who dies quite quickly into the film. While on death, this film establishes early on that Vetri and team must destroy a minotaur-like creature that’s living in an uninhabited area. I thought it strange that there’s such little opposition to killing a creature that the humans barely know about. There’s no debate about whether the said killing is needed in the first place; there’s no weighing the positives and negatives of potentially eliminating what could well be an alien lifeform. There’s a convoluted plot twist that perhaps addresses this, but it ends up coming too late and feels like a gimmick.

Much like in the Greek myth, our Theseus must solve some puzzles before he can get to the minotaur. What’s causing people to lose their minds in the presence of the creature? Who’s controlling it? Is there a purpose to this creature? The what and how of these revelations fall flat. Take the lab scene in which Dr Keerthy (Simran) realises that the creature may well be alive. It’s supposed to be an alarming moment, but I was already busy laughing at the doctor’s incompetency.

Right at the beginning, Vetriselvan speaks of the four stages of combat: identification, fight, identification of weakness, deception… In a sense, I went through those stages during this film. Having identified that this is a bad film, my fight was to hang about and hope for some emotional investment. The third stage is supposed to be about weakness identification, and frankly, this film’s weaknesses—subpar performances, bad writing, unconvincing CG—scream louder than the minotaur in it. We would all be victims of deception (Vetri’s fourth stage) if we forgave emotionally hollow, lazily written films for the ‘effort’. There’s a final stage, Vetriselvan says later, that only fighters—and film viewers too, I think—know all too well. “Sacrifice!” he says. I think it might be a tad overdramatic for me to refer to the time spent in the theatre as a sacrifice, but to be fair to the film, it’s at least mindful enough to not be indulgently long. I suppose it says a lot when you watch a film, and you are grateful that it isn’t longer than it is.

Vetriselvan, an Indian Army Captain is an orphan who is raised in the army school. His only family is his teammates which comprises Karuna, Sheikh, Rekha and Karthi Devan. The team is famous for its unity and covert missions. They are assigned a mission to investigate a particular area in the forest, Sector-42. The area earlier had a mineral factory during the East India Company rule. Due to a high amount of unusual activity happening in this area for the past 50 years, nobody has dared to step foot in the area. A team of soldiers who were sent to the area to investigate earlier never return. Vetri and his team visit Sector 42, but an unknown creature attacks them, making them unconscious.

After gaining consciousness, Vetri discovers that Karthi is trying to shoot himself and sees all of his team members unconscious. When Vetri tells Karthi not to shoot himself, he shoots him in the shoulder and dies. This incident becomes a black mark on Vetri's character since he refuses to blame Karthi and takes the sole blame for the failed operation. Karthi is branded as a traitor and is not given a military funeral which deeply upsets Vetri. Because of his refusal to blame Karthi for the operation, Vetri is handed a punishment posting as a training officer. Dr Keerthi is a scientist who is working for the defense ministry on the Minotaur project. The unnamed creature which is present in Sector-42 is called "Minotaur," an extremely dangerous cold-blooded creature that doesn't have any body temperature. They spit venom on people making them unconscious and some of them go berserk after having eye contact.

They communicate with each other by emitting bio radio signals with the help of spiders. Keerthi, with the help of Vikram, a rich spoilt brat who is funding Keerthi establishes a lab just near Sector-42 to study the happenings of Minotaurs and their threat. Since Vetri's team was the last one which visits Sector-42, they are chosen by Dr. Keerthi for the mission despite reservations from General Bala who despises Vetri after he refuses to take Karthi's blame for the earlier operation. The mission commences, and the Minotaurs manage to attack everyone except Vetri, who is conscious. Vetri almost kills a Minotaur with a bomb and brings it into the lab. Since the Minotaur is unconscious and not dead, the Minotaur still sends the signal to the spider and is awakened.

The Minotaur almost destroys the lab and kills a soldier who became berserk after coming into contact with the Minotaur. Realizing that Minotaurs attack in open spaces and emit bio radio signals through spiders, the next day the team along with Keerthi travel in an army tank. Since there are multiple Minotaurs, Vetri and Keerthi deduce that a huge Minotaur is present and emitting signals to the smaller Minotaurs. They install devices around the forest to get the location of the huge Minotaur and just as they are close to the location they are blinded by one of the Minotaurs except for Vetri, who is conscious. Keerthi finds that Minotaurs are sensitive to morphine from a blood sample she retrieved from Vetri. After noticing suspicious activities, Vetri finally reveals to his team that they would kill the huge Minotaur in the wee hours of the morning without Keerthi.

The team are shocked that Vetri said that they didn't find the location of the huge Minotaur, but he says that they actually know it and do not remember because of the Minotaur attack. Vetri reveals that they had found the place of the huge Minotaur which is situated in a water body near the old factory. After visiting the factory, Vetri sees a lot of corpses and Vikram's company's helicopter on the premises and holds Keerthi at gunpoint, who reveals that they wanted to open Sector-42 to extract rare minerals which are not available in any place and a team sent by Vikram's company entered Sector-42 without permission to restore the factory. The Minotaurs killed all the people working in the factory since during restoration they released polluted water into the streams which awakened the Minotaurs who felt threatened. Vetri also reveals that Karthi had consumed Morphine since he was injured during a past mission.

In their first Mission at Sector-42, Karthi actually saved all of his teammates' lives including Vetri's from Minotaurs but couldn't save his own since he was in close contact with them. The team then proceeds to kill the huge Minotaur without Keerthi. During the search at the factory, Vetri finds a mobile phone in which a scientist recorded vlogs of all the happenings in the factory. he sends that as a piece of confidential evidence to General Bala, who then knows about the ulterior motives of Keerthi and Vikram and also learns the reason why Vetri did not blame Karthi for the failed operation. Vetri and his team reach the location of the huge Minotaur where they initially trick Keerthi, General Bala, and Vikram into believing that Vetri has become berserk and has killed his teammates, but they all use training bullets.

Vetri is then attacked by the huge Minotaur through which he learns about the Minotaur's next generation was actually being safeguarded. Vetri somehow kills the huge Minotaur after almost drowning to death and finishes the operation. Although the Minotaurs are killed, Keerthi and Vikram's motive is foiled by Vetri and General Bala when they lie about not killing the Minotaur. Since Sector-42 is a dangerous area, the army orders it to completely shut it with civilian activity prohibited. Vetri is reinstated in the field and Karthi is given a funeral with full honors. Vetri finally learns that his love interest Kavya was actually Karthi's sister and fell in love with him since Karthi promised his family in a letter that he would present and talk to his family only after his name was cleared. In the post-credits scene, a seemingly new race of Minotaurs are awakening underwater, emitting bio radio signals implying that they will return.

Aranmanai 4 Box Office Collection Worldwide (After 13 Days): Surpasses Dhanush’s Captain Miller To Become Second Highest-Grossing Tamil Film Of 2024!

With only one competitor remaining, all eyes are now on aranmanai 4 as it aims to dethrone ayalaan and become the undisputed king of tamil cinema in 2024..

captain tamil movie review 2022

Aranmanai 4 refuses to slow down! The horror-comedy has become an unstoppable force at the box office, surpassing the lifetime collections of Dhanush’s Captain Miller to become the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024.

Earning an estimated 1.50 crore on its second Wednesday, Aranmanai 4 has raked in a whopping 47.90 crore net collection (approximately 56.52 crore gross) in just 13 days. The film has dominated the domestic market, collecting a staggering 32.1 crore in its first week and an impressive 15.79 crore from Day 8 to Day 13. With Day 14 figures yet to come in, analysts predict the film will close its second week with collections reaching 18 crore .

Starring Sundar C, Tamannaah Bhatia , Raashi Khanna, and Yogi Babu, Aranmanai 4 has resonated with audiences not just in Tamil Nadu, but also across India. The film boasts a strong 43.66 crore collection from the Tamil box office, complemented by an additional 4.24 crore from Telugu markets.

captain tamil movie review 2022

The international box office hasn’t been spared either, contributing a significant 14.25 crore to the film’s total. With a worldwide gross collection currently at a monstrous 70.77 crore , Aranmanai 4 has dethroned Dhanush’s Captain Miller. Captain Miller previously held the record for the 2nd highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 with a collection of 67.99 crore .

However, the ultimate challenge remains—can Aranmanai 4 surpass the box office king this year, Ayalaan? With a collection of 76.41 crore , Ayalaan currently holds the title of the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024.

With its phenomenal performance so far, Aranmanai 4 has a strong chance of achieving this feat in the coming days.
