In the fifteenth century, it was recorded that in London it was the custom at Christmas for each house and all the area temples to be “decked with holm, coves and ivy which at all the period of the year stood to be green”. The heart-moulded leaves of ivy were said to symbolize the coming to earth of Jesus, while holly was viewed as a defence against witches. Its red berries and thistles represent the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus at the execution and the blood he shed.

The Christmas tree was first used by German Lutherans in the sixteenth century, with records demonstrating that such a tree was put in the Cathedral of Strassburg in 1539, under the administration of the Protestant Reformer, Martin Bucer. The Moravians put lit candles on those trees. Task: Frank O'Connor stories often appear in anthologies of short stories because they are regarded as good stories.

Choose one story by Frank O'Connor which you feel should be included in an anthology. Fully explain why you think this text deserves inclusion in a collection of short stories. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "On Christmas Morning" by Frank O'Connor as it covers many different themes. In this essay I will look at what makes it good in order to show that the story deserves inclusion in an anthology of good stories. The story is based on the childhood of a young Irish boy called Larry. The first thing we learn from the story is that he is the eldest of two brothers and that he doesn't like his brother Sonny.

Larry does not pay much attention at school and would rather be out playing with his friends he says "for the life of me I couldn't see what attracted mother to education". Larry's relationship with Sonny is pretty poor. Sonny is good at his books and his mother's favourite because of this. Larry thinks that rather than try to be smarter than Sonny and fail he just won't try at all, we see this when Larry says "it wasn't my fault if, four days before the holidays, Flogger Dawley gave us sums we couldn't do, and Peter Doherty and myself had to go on the lang". As the story goes on we see the mischievous Larry develop into a more deceitful person.

Larry hangs about with the Doherty gang and his mother isn't very pleased with this "can't you do your lessons first and play after?" She would say. The piece of evidence which shows us Larry developing into a deceitful person the most is when he swops presents with Sonny because he feels he got the better present. He assures himself he is doing Sonny a good turn and that Sonny would have no use for a popgun and would much rather prefer a picture book. Larry says to himself "Sonny would never be any good in a gang: he was fond of spelling, and a studious child like him could learn a lot of spellings from a book like mine.

" Larry believes Santa is real contrary to what the Dohertys' say but when him and Sonny take their presents to show their mum and dad "mother smiled, but only for an instant." Larry is quite perceptive in realising that his mother has bought the presents and Santa Clause isn't real. He feels guilty about what he had done and "I burst out crying, threw the popgun on the floor, and ran bawling out of the house...

." He now realises why his mother wanted more of him and that she sees he is going the same way as his father. Larry's mother is the other character that makes the story so realistic. She has a difficult time bringing up two children practically on her own.

The only help she has is the little amounts of money she gets from her husband. He is more often than not spending his money at the pub and offers the mother no real support. When he is at home he is normally too drunk to notice her. The author describes the husband as "mean and common and a drunkard." The mother's only joy is her youngest child, Sonny, who is good at his books but she still cannot forget the problem with her eldest, Larry.

I think she has tried hard with Larry but feels he will also end up like his father. One of the main themes covered in the story is growing up. Larry has lead a difficult life for a child his age. I think the mother wanted him to grow up faster than normal because she receives no support from her husband. I think because Larry hasn't grown up faster than normal the mother has given up hope in him too soon.

Another theme found in the story is that of relationships a family holds. In this story we see many poor relationships. We see the poor relationship between Larry and Sonny, the poor relationship between the mother and the father and the poor relationship between Larry and his mother. The only good relationship is between Sonny and his mother. The boys have a poor relationship because they have been brought up in an environment where their mother and father have a poor relationship.

One other minor issue is the loss of innocence and guilt. Larry being the character who experiences these feelings. Near the end of the story we see that Larry feels guilty for the way he has treated his mother. We also see that Larry has lost the innocence a child possesses and is probably destined to end up like his father.

O'Connor has made this story what it is by using Irish dialect to give it a more Irish feeling. The narration of the story also enhances it. First person narration is used and because of this we get a more personal view of what happens although it may be biased at points. Larry is the narrator and tells us what he thinks and feels about what happens. We also find out what his emotions are. The story's title is ironic because when we think of Christmas we usually remember happy thoughts but here Larry is realising what his life holds for him and how much he has really let his mother down.

I enjoyed reading this story very much and would personally include it in an anthology of good stories as it has many themes and realistic characters. I also liked it because you need to read it more than once to gain a full picture of what was going on. The fact that one person could read it and gain something completely different from someone else also intrigued me.

Answer: The March family went to the Hummel family with their breakfast as soon as they could go. Hannah made a fire with the wood she had carried. She also stopped up the broken panes with old newspaper. Mrs. March gave the mother tea and gruel. She also comforted her with promises for help. The girls spread the table, set the children round the fire, and fed them like so many hungry birds. In a few minutes, the room began to look cheerful.

Question: What kind of person is Mrs. March?

Answer: Mrs. March was a common housewife and mother with some uncommon virtues. She knew that she had a shortage of money due to the ongoing war, yet she promised her daughters to gift them on Christmas eve. We find her attending some poor persons who needed help. Her heart melted at the adverse situation of Mrs. Hummel and her children. She badly wanted to help them and convinced her daughters to give their breakfast to the Hummel family without celebrating Christmas. She was a kind and generous lady and taught her daughters to be the same.

Question: Do you think the March sisters are selfish or generous? Give reasons for your answer.

Answer: I think the March sisters are generous like their mother. On her mother’s request, they instantly agreed to give their breakfast to the Hummel family and went to their house to help them. At the Hummel’s house, they spread the table, set the children round the fire and fed them like so many hungry birds. They felt good when the whole Hummel family became happy after the breakfast. They liked helping and loving their neighbours better than themselves.

Question: The main idea, message or moral of a story is its theme. What do you think is the theme of this story?

Answer: The theme of the story is to make others happy, especially those who are poor and needy. In this story, the March family became happy after making Mrs. Hummel and her children happy. The March sisters realised that it was better helping their neighbour than themselves.

Question: What are some ways in which you can celebrate a festival in a way that benefits others and makes you happy too?

Answer: I can donate my old clothes to the poor children in my locality. I can also distribute sweets to them. I can also decorate their houses with some candles while celebrating the festival.

Everyone participates on this occasion. It is mainly the festival of the Christians. But today, the entire world enjoys the Christmas season. 

Christmas is the centre of all joys for Christians. This is the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. He was born on 25th December at Bethlehem, in Jerusalem, in a stable. His mother is Mary and his father is Joseph. Christ is worshipped by all Christians. On the day of this festival, they bake cakes and cookies. Everyone visits the church to pray to Christ.

They taught us not to hurt others, even plants and animals. Being kind to all was their biggest teaching. So Christmas is as beautiful as Janmashtami.

On the eve of Christmas, on 24th December night, people arrange a Christmas tree. They decorate it with gifts and lights. They also bake cakes and cookies. Lots of guests are invited. Those who are rich, throw parties at their houses to celebrate Christmas. On the morning of Christmas, they visit churches and pray to Jesus for the overall peace and well-being. They are offered bread and wine to eat as the blessings of Christ. After they return, their festival starts with sharing food and serving the poor.

The saints, popes, and nuns serve the needy as part of the celebration. The biggest fun of Christmas is Sants Claus. He arrives the night before Christmas and distributes gifts to good children. The kids rejoice at the gifts, which increases their happiness.

Now Christmas is not just a festival of the Christians. It is now for all. In India, everyone enjoys the winter vacation. Kolkata is one of the biggest attractions during this time. It lights up beautifully and people come out of their houses to have fun. Eating cakes, praying to God is now the ritual of all. Christmas is the best year-end celebration that soon passes into the new year.

Descriptive Essay: Christmas Traditions in My Family

Despite how the modern message may have been diluted down the years, each Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus with traditions drawn from Christianity as well as other ones personal to our own family. Each family I know follows many of the same traditions as we do, however each put their own spin on it and make it their own. My Christmas is special because of these very traditions which we have formed as a family.

The 1st of December is my favorite day in the year because it marks the beginning of my Christmas. On the 1st of December my family and I go to the shops and buy a special new tree decoration. My parents have been collecting Christmas decorations for years and nothing matches on purpose. Christmas spirit is everywhere on the 1st of December, the shops play festive music and are usually decorated down to the last detail. It is this date for me that marks the beginning of the season.

We all put the tree up together the weekend after. We play Christmas music in the background, wear the Santa hats we dug out of the loft and have a drink. After the tree is up, the excessive amount of food has been brought, then the family all come down for the big day. We live all over now so the traditions have had to be adapted slightly. Christmas is the time when we all make the effort to come down at the same time. We go on the 24th of December and play family games all day. We have a buffet dinner which we call an ‘itsy bitsy’ then make our way to midnight mass at the local church.

On Christmas day we wake up early, around 8 a.m. and have breakfast together. We don’t open our presents as soon as we get up as we all agree that we love the anticipation. When we do get round to opening our gifts, after dinner has been put on and the vegetables have been peeled, one of us hands each present out, one at a time.

After presents we all help to get the dinner dished up and the table laid. For dinner we have a turkey with all of the trimmings, we say grace before dinner and then pull our crackers. We have a competition to see who can keep their hat on for the whole day.

After dinner comes the washing up, which we all help with. Then we enjoy family games which we either got that day or we dig out the old classics. The games are my favorite part of the day. It is something which everyone gets involved in and has a great laugh over.

Our family traditions at Christmas have been adapted since people have moved away however, we always make the effort to be together and play games together. Our traditions are much the same as any family; we eat, we give gifts and be merry.

The League of Women Voters of Tallahassee hosted a video essay contest for local high schoolers. The winner was Serenity Wiggins, an 11th grader at Rickards High School.

She won $1,000 for her 30-second video encouraging future voters to take part in democracy.

She spoke at a recent League of Women voters banquet to accept her big win.

Michael Cohen implicated his former boss  Donald Trump  in the hush money scheme to pay Stormy Daniels just days before the 2016 election, saying he doled out $130,000 at Trump’s direction and was promised reimbursement.

Cohen’s testimony ties together the prosecution’s allegations that Trump broke the law by falsifying business records to reimburse Cohen and conceal the hush money payment that Cohen said he made at Trump’s direction. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denies having an affair with Daniels.

Here are some of the key takeaways from Cohen's first day on the stand:

• Cohen ties Trump to the Daniels hush money payment: Through roughly five hours of testimony Monday, Cohen walked jurors through how he worked with former National Enquirer editor David Pecker on Trump’s behalf during the 2016 campaign to kill negative stories; how he kept Trump apprised of his hush money negotiations with Keith Davidson, the attorney for Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal; and how Trump approved and was aware of how Cohen would be falsely repaid in 2017 for the Daniels payment as legal services.
• Cohen ties the hush money reimbursement to Trump, too: Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records – 11 invoices, 12 vouchers and 11 checks – records that prosecutors say stem from the monthly reimbursements Cohen received in 2017 for the hush money payment he made to Daniels. On Monday, jurors heard through Cohen for the first-time evidence directly connecting Trump to those reimbursements.
• Cohen describes being Trump’s protector: As Cohen described each media story he killed and nondisclosure agreement he locked down ahead of the 2016 election, it was always in the name of protecting Trump. When it came to the settlement agreement with Daniels, Cohen said he kept control of a document revealing the identities of “David Dennison” and “Peggy Peterson” so that he could protect Trump. And he testified that he used the Essential Consultants LLC to facilitate the payment to Daniels “to protect him and to isolate him from the transaction.” Hoffinger asked Cohen whether he would sometimes bully people. Cohen confirmed he would.

Cohen is expected back in court tomorrow

Donald Trump's ex-attorney and fixer  Michael Cohen  took the stand today to testify about the  Stormy Daniels hush money payment  and Trump's  alleged involvement in the scheme .

He's expected to face more questions tomorrow. Court proceedings are expected to resume at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Michael Cohen took the stand on Monday in Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York.

When he was Trump’s personal attorney, Cohen made the $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He landed in federal prison  over that transaction for breaking campaign finance laws. 

Through previous witnesses’ testimony, jurors have already heard plenty about Cohen. They have painted an unflattering portrait of an aggressive, impulsive and unlikeable attorney. The former “fixer,” now a critical witness , testified about the payment and Trump’s alleged involvement.

Here’s a look at what Cohen said on the stand today:

• Relationship with Trump: Cohen said he worked directly for Trump , not the general counsel's office at the Trump Organization. He said working with the press was a “portion” of his job and would sometimes call news outlets and ask them to redact or take articles down. Cohen testified that it was required for him to keep Trump updated about his work.
• On the presidential run: Cohen said Trump was worried about stories about his personal life coming out as he weighed a run for president, with Trump saying, “Just be prepared there’s going to be a lot of women coming forward,” according to Cohen. He testified that he didn’t have a formal role in the 2016 campaign, but he used his press contacts to be a surrogate .
• The doorman story: Cohen said he learned about the doorman story circulating about Trump having fathered "a love child” and testified Trump told him to “handle it.” He confirmed that the strategy was to take the story “off the market” for $30,000, and Trump was grateful it wouldn’t be published. Cohen said he went to Trump to tell him the agreement was completed , as well as to get credit for executing it. 
• Karen McDougal: He said Trump told him to make sure the story about former Playboy model Karen McDougal didn’t get released, which he believed meant acquiring it . Cohen recounted a call with Pecker and Trump about the story. When Cohen told Trump the cost of controlling the McDougal story, Cohen testified Trump said, “No problem, I’ll take care of it.” Later, David Pecker, former CEO of the National Enquirer’s parent company, spoke to Cohen and insisted on being reimbursed .
• "Access Hollywood" tape: When he learned about the video , released by the Washington Post, Cohen said he wanted to "ensure" things were being taken care of properly and that Trump would be protected . He testified that it was Melania Trump’s idea to say the language in the video “was locker room talk.” Cohen recalled thinking the tape would impact women voters.
• Stormy Daniels: When he initially told Trump about the Stormy Daniels story, Cohen testified that Trump said, “Women are going to hate me” and that it would be “a disaster for the campaign.” Cohen said his former boss told him to work with Pecker to “take care of it.” As the agreement unfolded, Cohen said he kept Trump informed on the deal with Daniels.
• Timing of Daniel’s payment: Trump wanted the situation with Daniels to be under wraps until after the election “because if I win, it will have no relevance because I'm president. And if I lose, I don't even care,” Trump said, according to Cohen.
• Making the payment: Cohen said he spoke with Trump twice to get his sign-off before making the payment to Daniels using a company he created , Essential Consultants LLC. He said he would have never gone forward to the bank without Trump’s approval. He testified he also let Trump know he signed the agreement with Daniels.
• Repayment to Cohen: Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg told Cohen he would be paid $420,000 for Daniel’s payment over 12 months . He testified that the payment series set up for future legal services was actually a reimbursement .

Trump rails against judge and says there's no crime in remarks outside of Manhattan courthouse

Donald Trump slammed Judge Juan Merchan and called the hush money trial a "scam" as he left the Manhattan courthouse on Monday.

“This is a scam, I think it’s it’s terrible thing that’s happening to democracy in this country,” Trump said. He then called the case a "rigged deal" and Merchan "conflicted." 

He went on to read comments made by his allies regarding the case.

“There’s no fraud here, there’s no crime here," Trump said.

The final moments today in the courtroom: Trump stacks his papers and Cohen nods toward jurors

As Judge Juan Merchan gives his daily instructions to the jury, Donald Trump is stacking up his papers and whispering with attorney Todd Blanche.

His hands are folded on the table and he then flips through the papers one more time.

Michael Cohen, for his part, pans the courtroom and then looks down at his hands as Merchan is speaking.

Cohen gives a small smile and nods toward the jurors as Merchan dismisses them for the day.

Michael Cohen finished the day’s testimony by explaining how he, former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg and Donald Trump agreed to reimburse him for the $130,000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.

After Trump won the election, Cohen pitched Trump on a set up in which he would serve as Trump’s personal attorney for free but would be paid by companies hoping for insights on Trump.

In early January, Cohen went to Weisselberg about being reimbursed for the $130,000 payment, and Weisselberg agreed, Cohen testified. He showed Weisselberg the wire transfer document, and Weisselberg took handwritten notes calculating what Trump owed Cohen based on their conversations.

Weisselberg suggested Cohen take the money as income rather than as untaxed reimbursements, Cohen testified. "I didn’t really think about it. I just wanted to get my money back,” he said.

According to Cohen, they agreed that Trump would pay him $420,000 in all: $130,000 to reimburse him for the payment to Daniels, $50,000 to reimburse him for unrelated tech services, $180,000 to account for estimated taxes and a $60,000 bonus. The payments would be made over 12 months “as like a legal service rendered since I was then going to be given the title of personal attorney to the president,” Cohen testified.

They presented the plan to Trump, and he approved it, Cohen said. The payments were designed to look like future legal services, but they were actually reimbursement for the Daniels’ deal, he testified.

Cohen never actually put together a retainer agreement for any future work he'd do for Trump, “because I knew there was going to be no compensation,” he testified.

Court is breaking for the day

The court is breaking for the day and the jury is leaving the courtroom.

Donald Trump's ex-attorney Michael Cohen is expected to continue to be questioned by prosecutor Susan Hoffinger tomorrow.
