Do you remember the day we almost had a crash? I cannot forget that incident.

It was a chilly winter night, and we were heading home after you picked me from a party. The roads were blocked, you were going slow, and we were enjoying our favorite rock music. Suddenly, the car started gliding into the trees and the woods.

Within a fraction of seconds, you steered the car, and we escaped the ditch. Your presence of mind impresses me till date. You protected me without worrying about your hand that was twisted badly. That’s when I realized how special you are to me. And now I know how a father should be.

It is my humble plea to you, don’t be embarrassed at me as I’m writing this letter to share my feelings. I know we have a strong bond, and I can tell you anything. But I think these are a few feelings that I cannot express in person.

Even without telling you, you always know when something is wrong. Even with my smallest achievements, you are proud of me. Even when you have no money, you do your best to get me gifts. Even when you are busy, you call me to ask how I am.

Your humor makes me laugh, and your protection makes me feel safe. Your love brings our family together. Not just me, but mom too loves you for being the father you are. Thank you for the shelter, food, education, and love you have given me.

It is you who guided me to do what I love the most. And now, all those traveling lessons have made me a professional traveler. I have seen so many beautiful countries and want to visit more. I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because there’s something from our past that has been weighing on my heart for a while now. I believe it’s high time I express my sincere apologies.

Do you remember that childhood prank I played on you? It was the one where I threw a lit match stick on a bunch of firecrackers. I had no idea my innocent intention to laugh would result in such a fright. The shock, anger, and fear in your eyes at the aftermath of it have continued to stay with me throughout the years. I know now that repairing the burnt pool deck must have cost you a lot. I deeply regret my thoughtlessness and the anxiety it must have caused you.

Dad, I want you to know I genuinely apologize for that prank. I have since learned that humor should never come at the expense of someone’s peace of mind. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me for my immature actions.

36. Letter down memory lane

I have lately been reminiscing about that unforgettable family vacation we had and decided to revisit the place. Seeing this place now, I wanted to share some of my favorite memories with you. Do you remember the excitement and anticipation that we felt as we packed up the car and set off on that road trip? The promise of new adventures with the family made it all the more special.

One memory that stands out as I feel the warmth of the sun on my face is when we went hiking. The view from the summit was stunning. The sense of accomplishment we felt after reaching the top still makes my heart sing. I also cannot forget the laughter and delicious meals we shared around the campfire. Those marshmallow roasting sessions and s’mores were pure joy.

But my favorite memory was simply spending evenings at the cabin, playing board games and telling stories. It was those moments of togetherness that made the trip so magical. Dad, that vacation holds a special place in my heart because it is the one time we connected on a deeper level. Thank you for being the reason I have such cherished moments. I love and appreciate you very much for always being there for me, even when I didn’t deserve it. Father, I don’t know what the future holds, but I hope to start rebuilding our relationship. And a great friend.

You praised me for my efforts and success

And corrected my flaws during failures.

You played games and puzzles with me

And made me laugh with your jokes.

You are the most loving father in my life,

One who has provided for me and supported me.

You filled my childhood with joy and wonder

And inspired me to follow my dreams.

Now, for all this and more, I am grateful!

I love you, Dad, and I miss you!

43. Letter to a Doctor dad

To the best doctor I know,

Dad, you are a man of great renown. Your skills and knowledge are unmatched, and your kindness is even more so. You’ve dedicated your life to helping people and significantly impacted many lives.

Dad, I am proud of you for everything you do. I know your job is often challenging, yet you always do it gracefully and with compassion. No matter what the hour, you are always there for your patients and inspire people with your never-ending dedication. Dad, thank you for everything you do. Happy Doctor’s Day!

With love, Your son

44. A letter of forgiveness

As I woke this morning, I realized I had been lugging around a load that needed to be put down. So, I am writing to tell you that I forgive you! I know your error wasn’t intentional, even though it cut too deeply into the folds of my heart.

I do not wish to lie to you; I was furious. I felt betrayed by you, and I couldn’t understand what pushed you to decide to leave us. Mother was devastated, and the whole family was in shock. But now that I think back, I realize you’re only human. You had had enough and had tolerated more than you could bear to take. You just decided to protect yourself and didn’t intend your self-preserving move to hurt me or the family this way.

I’m still unhappy about what happened, but I forgive you. I know it’s the only way to move forward in life. I love you, Dad. I always have and always will.

Respectfully yours, (name)

45. A letter reminiscing childhood

I suddenly wanted to write about my childhood memories with you while looking at my daughter. I remember that you would always take me to the park, even on days when you were exhausted from work. We would swing on the tires, slide down the tube, and hang around on the monkey bars. You would laugh with me and always have my back. You also taught me how to skate the board, tie my shoes, do my hair, and do my homework. You were always patient with me, even when I couldn’t get it right after several trials and threw tantrums to get things done.

You were always there for me, no matter what. You have been my guide, meteor, and biggest cheerleader. And yes, I will never forget the father-daughter dance at my wedding. You looked so handsome in your tux, and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world as we danced to our favorite song. I wish my daughter could have all these moments with her dad. Regretfully, she can’t. And neither can I anymore, considering you are too old to get out of bed!

I’m so grateful that you were there for me all this way. I love you, Dad. Thank you for everything.

Yours lovingly, (name)

46. A letter of sympathy

In this challenging time, I want to express my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father. Losing a parent is an indescribable agony, and my heart aches for you. I never knew Grandpa beyond my youth, so I may never fully understand the depth of your bond with him. Yet, I know he played a significant role in shaping your life.

His enthusiasm for traveling the world, his love for adventures, and his historical wisdom have indeed left a mark on your life and, by extension, mine. It is only because of him that I now am an archeologist, and I will be eternally grateful to him for inspiring me.

During this time of grief, please know that you are not alone. Please know that I love you deeply, and I am here to support you through this painful life chapter. Lean on me and let us carry the burden of this grief together. Am sure he is smiling at us from above and wishing for us to find solace in his memories.

With love and sympathy, Your son

47. Letter of reflection

Dearest Father,

As I prepare to enter the phase of fatherhood, I find myself reflecting on your parenting style more in-depth. I have begun to realize your profound impact on my life. Father, your parenting style has always been a unique blend of love, guidance, and freedom. You had a knack for balancing discipline with understanding. You have given me the space to make and learn from my mistakes. You have never been quick to judge or criticize. You always take the time to listen to me and provide me with the guidance I need. You have always led by example and been the epitome of patience, responsibility, and compassion. Your ability to find joy in everyday life has warmed our home.

As I ponder this, I realize that I never really acknowledged the trust and independence you’ve granted me. Nor have I thanked you for the countless moments of genuine connection that we have had. Father, thank you for always being there, cheering me on, no matter what I set my mind to. Your belief in me has given me the confidence to chase my dreams. And your parenting style has instilled in me good values and principles. I am grateful for having a father like you.

With adoration and appreciation, Your daughter.

48. A poet’s love letter to dad

In honor of my loving father,

Dad, you are the golden thread running through my heart. And your love is waved into my life’s fabric from the start. In the symphony of my days, the sound of your laughter is a tune that leads me through life’s complex maze.

Like a light in the darkest night, your wisdom is comforting. My love for you is growing as time goes on, like an endless river that flows on.

You have served as my mentor, my compass, and my idol. And I will always feel comfortable confiding in your aisle. Your embrace is a haven in this vast world. I take comfort and pride in you for caring as much as possible.

So let me tell you, my loving father: I will always adore you. And my love grows like a bird’s feather.

With all my love, Your sweet poet

Dads are critical pillars in children’s development. Some people have great relationships with their dads, while others have complicated or strained relationships, or don’t have contact with them at all.

Being a dad is different from merely being a father in that the former has nurtured a more loving relationship with their kids. Becoming a father is a huge milestone in a person’s life. The child can enjoy their dad’s great sense of humor, fun attitude in life, and loving personality. Whatever your relationship with your dad, you can write a compelling essay to convey your experiences and share your emotions.

The author relates her struggles of breaking free from her father’s encumbering sense of being unloved. “Dad can have a really hard time getting used to his little girl now being a young woman who has romantic interests, and breasts and may no longer be into the things that she and dad used to do together.”

The love of dads has a lasting impact on a child’s disposition and outlook in adulthood. The problem is that some dads tend to be distant once their kids’ transition into teenagers. This essay helps dads preserve their closeness with their children during confusing times.

“…[G]ay fathers still feel the brunt of stigma, experiences that the researchers linked to states with fewer legal and social protections for gays and their families.”

Years after the legal acceptance of gay marriages, gay dads still endure discrimination. A research study uncovers this and studies influences that continue to perpetuate the discriminating environment.

“It was only in 2019 that my sisters and I discovered all the photographs our dad had taken of his fellow GIs — reading, drinking beer at cafés and tending to their military truck. Some are portraits. Some seem candid. All feel special.”

In this essay, book author Ketteler talks about her nostalgic adventure to learn more about her veteran father’s life at the barracks. This journey starts after uncovering old photos of his wartime memorabilia wrapped with mystery and brotherly love.

“If, for whatever variety of reasons, a dad isn’t present, physically or otherwise, then the child must look elsewhere for role models. I see being a role model as part of my life purpose. I need to be the role model that my dad wasn’t there to be for me. I must be what I didn’t have.”

A son who never had someone to call dad pens a letter to his deceased stranger-father. Yet, despite the letter appearing as an outpour of outrage, a surprising twist comes up when the essay shifts into a forgiving tone.

10 Compelling Prompts On Essays About Dads

Describe the best side of your father and share with your readers how he fits as your best friend. Talk about the things you like doing together and how he listens to you in times of need. Perhaps you enjoy watching movies together or going on annual trips away together. What are the other things that make you appreciate your father? Answer this question in the main section of your essay. End your essay with a conclusion explaining how a parent and a child can have true bonds of friendship.

Essays About Dads: Spending time with dad

Do you and your dad enjoy golf, camping, or hiking? Or do you prefer doing something indoors, like cooking or playing board games? First, write about the activities you and your father enjoy doing together. Then, for a more impactful essay, write about what a day of spending time with your dad looks like and your fondest memory with him.

Like our essay example, we hope you also have important lessons to carry on from your dad, whether by having a loving or complicated relationship with him. Write down the most important lesson your dad has imparted to you. You may have learned essential life skills like cooking or cleaning, self-confidence, or how to be independent. Detail how the lessons you have learned have shaped your perspective in life and what you are striving to do to embody his teachings into your life.

Diverging from the traditional perception of fathers as mainly financial providers, the modern definition of a dad comes in different shapes and sizes. First, enumerate the typical dads existing today — single dads, gay dads, blended households, step dads, and more. Then, find out how they are raising their children and how different are their parenting styles from those of traditional dads. Include interview research in your essay for an interesting and accurate essay.

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative , one in four children is without a biological, step, or adoptive father. In this essay, enumerate the adverse effects of fatherlessness on a child’s development. How do these effects influence one’s adulthood? Find research studies to support your answer to this.

Research from the Pew Research Center has shown that single dads have increased ninefold since the 1960s. Research this trend further and discover what factors drive single men to take on the enormous responsibility of fatherhood on their own. If you know dads who are single fathers by choice, their stories would add more life to your story. Also, tackle the options men have to be single dads, such as surrogacy or adoption, and assistance your state or country offers aspiring single dads.

According to the World Population Review , about 50% of married couples divorce. When marriages fail, what rights do fathers hold to continue being a father to their children? Find out what these are, along with a father’s obligations and penalties for not fulfilling them. Turn this into an argumentative essay and answer whether these rights and obligations are enough and how they can be expanded to sustain raising a child.

As modern times drastically change the roles of parents, dads have become more involved in child-rearing. This has allowed dads to nurture more profound relationships with their kids, breaking the image of a distant father who only gets to see his child after work. First, write about the qualities and actions that make a father a responsible dad. Then, add the importance of having responsible dads at home and what society can do to promote responsible fatherhood.

Essays About Dads: My dad the disciplinarian

The image of dads as a disciplinarian has often been perceived negatively. But beyond the punishments, discipline means enabling children to grow up well. In this essay, talk about your dad’s disciplinary techniques. Write about how he corrects bad behavior. Then, cite anecdotes to make your essay more lively. For example, share how your dad responded to a grave mistake you committed. Finally, write down how he punished you and what you learned from this experience.

Interview your father and try to capture his roller coaster of emotions and experiences as a first-time dad. Ask him what he felt like when he first held you in your arms, when you got your first fever and when he first brought you to school. Next, ask him how he is coping with the extraordinary demands of fatherhood financially, physically, and emotionally. Finally, ask him to give soon-to-be fathers a few words of wisdom. Share these experiences in your essay and describe your take on these emotions.

Essay on My Father

List of essays on my father, essay on my father – my role model and my friend (essay 1 – 500 words), essay on my father – for kids and children (essay 2 – 750 words), essay on my father – long essay for school students (essay 3 – 800 words).

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for school students (Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Standard).

Introduction:

My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.

My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.

My Father – My Role Model:

My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.

My Father – My Friend:

My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.

Importance of My Father in My Life:

My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.

My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.

My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

250 Words Essay on My Dad Is My Hero

My father, the embodiment of resilience and compassion, has always been my hero. His life and actions have been a beacon, guiding me through the labyrinth of life. His heroism isn’t defined by extraordinary feats but by his everyday actions and unwavering commitment to his values.

Resilience in Adversity

My father’s resilience in the face of adversity is nothing short of heroic. He grew up in an impoverished household, yet he managed to break free from the shackles of poverty through sheer determination and hard work. His journey from a small-town boy to a successful entrepreneur is a testament to his indomitable spirit.

Compassion Personified

His compassion is another aspect that makes him my hero. He has always been a pillar of support for the less fortunate. His philanthropic efforts, though not widely recognized, have touched many lives. He taught me that true heroism lies in empathy and kindness, not just courage and strength.

A Guiding Light

His actions and principles serve as my compass, guiding me in my decisions and actions. His humility despite his accomplishments, his respect for all regardless of their status, and his unwavering integrity are the traits I strive to emulate.

In conclusion, my father is my hero not because he’s invincible or perfect, but because he embodies the values I hold dear. My Dad, The Supporter

In times of difficulty, my dad has always been there to support me. He has been my rock, my anchor, providing stability and reassurance when I needed it most. Whether it was a difficult exam, a challenging project, or a personal setback, my dad has always been there to offer his advice, lend his support, and help me find the strength to overcome. His unwavering faith in my abilities has given me the confidence to face any challenge that comes my way.

My Dad, The Role Model

Perhaps most importantly, my dad has been a role model, someone I aspire to be like. His integrity, his humility, his compassion, and his resilience are qualities that I strive to emulate. He has shown me that true strength lies not in physical power, but in the strength of one’s character. He has taught me that the true measure of a person is not in their wealth or status, but in their actions and the impact they have on the lives of others.

In conclusion, my dad is my hero because he embodies the qualities that I admire and aspire to have. He is a provider, a guide, a supporter, and a role model. He has shaped me into the person I am today and continues to inspire me to be the best version of myself. To me, my dad is not just a parent, but a hero in the truest sense of the word.

An Essay about My Father

What our customers say about the received essays.

This essay will tell you about my father who is perfect for me.

There is an opinion that perfect dads do not exist, however, I strongly want to disagree with this opinion. Maybe not all the dads are perfect, but mine definitely is. My father is special and everything he does and says is special too. I like the way he dresses, he behaves, he moves and speaks. I am really proud of being his daughter, as I am a small present of a great person he is. Let me describe my father so that you understood how special he is.

When you look at him for the first time, you can think that he wears only classy and formal clothes. However, it is just first glance opinion. When you know my father for a long time you can notice that he feels comfortable in all types of clothes: formal, informal, sportive, cheap, expensive, loose, tight fitting. All these clothes are different, but I like them all as each piece accentuates his life style and his habits. What is more, all his clothes fit his body stature. My dad’s appearance is unique and he knows how to outline it the best way.

Calculate the cost of essay

If we start talking about his appearance, it is important to mention that the way he moves and acts reflects his personality a lot. He prefers fast walking to the calm one. I think that his manner to walk quickly shows his desire to catch the time and manage to take the most of his life. He enjoys every part of his wonderful life. Even when he eats you can get jealous of him, as he will eat the simplest dish with such a delight as if it is the most expensive and delicious food in the world. He is happy and thankful for every piece of meal he gets, and he enjoys it.

He usually does not speak while eating, however, when he speaks it is one more story to tell. Communicating with my father, you will be able to notice any emotion and expression he has about the subject he is talking about. When he worries about some issues – he frowns, when he is happy – he smiles. It is easy to read his emotion on his face. It is even more interesting to talk with him when you can observe his face and analyze the feelings he has towards this or that topic.

It is extremely interesting to listen to him. You can always find out some new information, learn something and share your experience with him. I can always rely on my father and I am confident that his opinion is objective. In case I want to get honest opinion of a person who doesn’t care, I would ask my father. His opinion always comes from the bottom of his heart. On the other hand, he knows how to choose the best time for it; he waits for the time when I am calm and relaxed so that I can easily perceive the information. Sometimes there may be a situation that everything goes wrong, and I feel bad. My father can always find right words and give good advice. These moments are important for me because I feel the support, I know that I am not alone, and it gives me confidence.

My father does not usually show off his feelings a lot. He might be strict and serious when we are out, but I know that he loves me, and I can feel his love in every movement and every sight. He is not used to kissing or cuddling me every day, however, when he does it once a week or so it is clear that these actions are extremely sincere and come from the big heart of my father. Every single time he gives me a cuddle, I feel overwhelmed with love and his attention. And these are the most precious moments of our relationships with my father.

This is my father the way I see him. This is the father I love so much! And it is the only thing that matters! I have the clear understanding that there are no perfect people in the Earth; however, my father is perfect for me. He is my role model and he is the person I want to be similar to when I will grow up. I want to have a family and I want my children to be as found of me as I am of my father. I love my father very much and I do appreciate everything he does for my development and me. I think that my father and I have perfect relationships and I hope that with flow of time they will only improve.

In this essay, I am going to tell you about my father whom I am very proud of.

It is often said that there are no perfect fathers in the world. However, I do not agree with this statement. My dad is ideal. I believe that he is special; his deeds and behavior are also special. My father always speaks and dresses in an appropriate manner. Without doubt, he is a person I deeply admire, and the thought that I am his daughter makes me really happy. I would like to describe my father in detail so that you can understand why my father is so special for me.

When you first meet my father, you may think that he is conservative since he adores wearing formal clothes. However, you should not judge the person by his appearance. If you knew my dad for a few years, you would notice that he likes to wear different clothes, including elegant suits, knitted sweaters with casual jeans, and even T-shirts with shorts. In my opinion, such diversity in wardrobe shows his many-sided, rich inner world. I like the way my father dresses because it illustrates his lifestyle. The thing that I like most is that all the outfits really fit him. Therefore, I believe that my father has a really good taste.

Now, when you know how my father looks like, it is time to describe his moves since they can tell a lot about his individuality. My father does not like to walk slowly; he always moves fast. It means that he wants to do everything he has planned in a timely manner. My dad does not waste his precious time in vain. Undoubtedly, he loves his active lifestyle. What is more, my father always teaches me to enjoy every moment of our life. He reasonably explains the benefits of doing everything with delight and diligence. In addition, due to his active life position, my dad effortlessly copes with any hardship on his way.

I would like to mention that the way my father speaks is fascinating. Everyone who communicates with him can say that his speeches are clear and reasonable. My father is always interested in the subject he is talking about. Without doubt, he is a perfect interlocutor. Also, one can notice that his face expresses different emotions when he is talking. When my father is content with the issue, there is a genuine smile on his face. When he disagrees with something, he knits his eyebrows. Therefore, while speaking with him, you can guess what my father feels toward a subject being discussed.

My father never argues over the issues he knows nothing about. When listening to him, you can learn some interesting and useful information. My father reads a lot of books. He is interested in the most debatable current issues and always wants to know more. When talking with others, he tries to support his thoughts with facts to be completely objective. He believes that false statements can do harm to a person. I am happy that my dad has unbiased opinions, and he never tries to impose them on others. Obviously, my father is a very smart man. He likes to share his experience as well as learn the experiences of people surrounding him.

What is more, my father always gives me good advice when I ask for it. He can calm me when there is a need to do so. When I feel bad, he finds proper words to support me. I greatly appreciate such moments. I am really happy that my father cares about my family and me. What is more, he always gives me a helping hand and teaches to help others. He understands that he is an example I want to follow.

Even though my father is very active, he does not like to show his feelings and emotions to the public. Thus, when we go out, my dad tries to be serious and behaves in an appropriate way. He says that every man should act like a man, not a monkey. When we are at home, my father acts more freely. He likes to tell us jokes and we laugh at them together. I feel that my father loves me very much even though he does not tell me about it every day. However, he does not need to repeat it again and again. Such things are obvious without any words. I am grateful to my father for his sincerity and tender attitude to me.

This is the way I see my dad. I suppose one can say that I exaggerate because there are no perfect people in the world. However, my father is a real role model for me. I would like to have all those good features that he has. I would like my children to perceive me the same way I perceive my father. I appreciate his kindness, love, and belief in me. I wish everyone could have such close relations with their fathers as I have with mine.

Essay on My Father (1000+ Words)

Typically, people speak of mother’s love and appreciation, and often overlook the father’s attention. Mother’s love is talked extensively around anywhere, in film, in series, and much more.

What we fail to recognize, though, is the power of a parent who always gets overlooked. My father is a gift which not many citizens see in their lives.

It’d be incorrect to assume that every dad is the perfect hero for his kids, and it is not the case. However, I will voucher for my dad without even any second thoughts until it comes to becoming an ideal man.

How different is my father?

As everyone wants to assume that their father is exceptional, so do me. However, this belief is not purely based on the passion I have for him but also on his character.

My father has a company and is very diligent in all facets of life. My father is one of those who told me to exercise still professionalism, no matter what kind of work I do.

Most notably, he has a pleasant disposition and always makes my mom laugh with his dumb shenanigans, and after 27 months of the relationship.

I totally enjoy this dumb side of him when he’s around his relatives. He does his hardest to satisfy all our desires, but he still retains strictness whenever the need arises.

My childhood memories about him are a stern, strict, or not very conversational man. He would crack its most funny jokes of Dad, and we’ll all laugh and smile.

He felt a persevering and robust sense of obligation for his own birth family and also his marital ones.

The meager paycheck that he always received would be shared between such two families, so when he was bad in currying favor or supporting himself, my father did not rise inside the ranks, so his profits remained very mirage until he passed.

This formally made us a low-income family, so our childhoods were thrifty, frugal, and austere. A little bit of money mattered a lot.

In spite of these limitations, my father has effectively prepared our futures. If his provident money was released during his retirement, he used the whole sum, plus a personal loan, to purchase a home and in the name of his young son. We had a roof above our heads and for the remainder of our days.

Why do I like my father?

Among the most amazing aspects of my father was the number of things he was involved in.

He’d spend hours from outside the tailor’s shop seeing him making shirts, and within a few months, he purchased himself the Singer sewing machine. From that day forward, all our clothing, along with the winter school uniforms, were sewn by him.

He taught himself carpentry and designed the sofa sets that we’ve been using for generations.

He got to learn dry cleaning and then after that, in winter, we did go to school smelling kerosene.

My father was a great chef, so he enjoyed the food. While my mother was immobilized by lymphatic TB, she must have prepared breakfast, lunch, or dinner for her family and in the morning until heading off to work.

Best of everyone, he was a talented guitarist, blessed with the vichitra veena. He had a Carnatic’ band’ of his own with such a flautist as well as a mridangam player.

Things I learned from my father

Slowly, I learned how much more of how I was influenced by who he is and. Like him, I’m never tired, so I’m always intrigued by everything else in my life.

I’m still interested in doing something positive or educational. I’m 2 two years younger now than he was while he died, so I began to learn how to play piano, appreciate search engine optimization, UX design, or drawing.

I heard from him every kindness is a frame of mind, not a wallet condition. The amount of nameless, faceless poor folks my father supported was long, which we heard only when he passed.

Never demeaning the recipients with such a handout, he encouraged them to reimburse at their pace and time but made saying they actually so, preserving their self-respect.

Without even talking about it, he taught me what something means to become a parent, and what it means to become a lifeless person.

My father as the source of motivation

I can proudly say that this was my father, who was the source of my inspiration since day one. In those other words, his outlook and personality influenced me together like a human.

About the same way, he still has a huge effect on the environment inside his own little ways. My father dedicates his spare time to have to take care of stray animals that encourage me to be doing the same thing.

My father has told me the essence of love in the shape of a rose that he gives to my mother every day without fail. This continuity and devotion encourage us all to handle them in the same manner.

All my experience in sports or vehicles, I’ve come from my dad. This is one of the few reasons why I want to be a cricket player in the future.

10 Lines on my father

  • He is a caring and obliging man who takes care of my whole family.
  • He is a talented engineer or a very hard-working individual.
  • He’s an articulate guy who answers all the questions smartly.
  • My father loves his own family, my mother, or every member of the family.
  • He retains a cordial relationship with our family, acquaintances, and colleagues.
  • He’s going to bring my sister or me to college or my mother for work every day.
  • Every day, he supports my younger sister in our studies and me.
  • He shows us proper manners , compassion, and the ethic of living.
  • My dad is my role model, and one day I want to be around him.
  • My father is, or is always, a huge inspiration to me.

My friendship with my father is summed up by a single occurrence. He wanted me to attend the IIT for becoming an engineer.

I decided to become a novelist, a career he disdained to have no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I left the train wherein my family moved via Delhi to Bombay even as the whistle sounded. I’ve been bent on enjoying my way of life.

My father, profoundly upset, cut me over without a country, saying that I should really help myself whether I was so optimistic about writing. But so did I, raising enough by writing night papers to cover my lease, college tuition, or food.

Six months later, my dad, moving via Delhi in December, met me to see how his powerful-headed son would do and saw that I had lived quite well without borrowing and asking. He was clearly swelled with pride.

My father hugged me, forgave me for one moment, used 400 rupees as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other essentials.

Since that day on, he could happily say, “My son pursued his heart more than my head – see what a great job he did.”

I hope you liked this essay on my father. Must share this essay with your friends.

To my father: Thank you for showing me what to look for in a man

Kevin Kozicki/Getty Images

When I look at my husband, I see the same similarities of a devoted father and husband. Of a man who would do anything for his family despite the unpleasantries that life may throw his way.

By Mariah Maddox Updated May 1, 2024

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Because you have shown me the essence of a real man. You have carried the epitome of a devoted father and husband for many years, and you continue to do so. From as far back as I can remember, you have dedicated so much of yourself to the well-being of your family.

Raising children is a tough job, but you and mom took on the task of raising nine of us. Though you may think that much of your hard work has gone unseen, all that you have done for us is evident in the beautiful lives that we are blessed to be living—lives built on your (and mom’s) selfless sacrifices.

You and I may not have always been the closest growing up, but there are certain moments that I still hold dear to my heart to this day, like how you’d take me to get a slushy every day after you picked me up from school even though you had to be at work shortly after. I remember all the moments that you selflessly pushed aside the battles you were dealing with just to see us smile.

When I look at my husband, I see the same similarities of a devoted father and husband.

One thing you made sure of was that we were always taken care of. You endlessly poured (and continue to pour) into our family with the love of a committed father and husband—even when you were stretched thin and burdened beyond what our eyes could see or our minds could understand.

Sure, mom was within arm’s reach most of my childhood as she tended to the household while you worked long hours away from home, but the way you both balanced each other built my understanding of a loving and healthy marriage —especially after kids. Because of that and because of your steady presence in my life, you unknowingly showed me what to look for in a man. And as a result of your constant love, I believe that I am blessed with the best husband and the best father for my child.

When I look at my husband, I see the same similarities of a devoted father and husband. Of a man who would do anything for his family despite the unpleasantries that life may throw his way. I see the tiring days and the long nights that await him, yet the way he still fills the house with laughter and unending love. And for this, I am grateful.

As a woman with her own family now, you and I have had the opportunity of experiencing a new dynamic in our relationship as you watched me become a wife and a mother. You have also taken my husband under your arms, loving him as your own, especially since his father passed away. I am grateful that he, too, gets to have you as a father-figure in his life.

Because I know the lasting effect of having an active dad. More than ever now, I am grateful that you have played a substantial role in my upbringing, teaching me and protecting me the best way you knew how. And because of that, I look forward to the bond that my husband will build with our son and the way that their relationship unfolds over the years.

Because I saw those qualities in you and witnessed the unwavering love between you and mom, I was able to resemble that in my own relationship.

So to my dad, I am lucky to have you as my father. I am full of gratitude for all the things you have taught me, and for the fact that you showed me what to look for in a man. A selfless, patient, devoted, understanding and loving man. Because I saw those qualities in you and witnessed the unwavering love between you and mom, I was able to resemble that in my own relationship.

And now, as a result, I am building a beautiful life with my husband and our son. I look forward to the traditions they build and the ways my husband teaches our son to be a kind and respectable young man. Because one day, if he so chooses, our son will have a family of his own. And I want his significant other to see evidence of the love that he was raised on. A love that has been passed from generation to generation. A love that will forever stand.

College Essays

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?

The Bottom Line

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

body_goats.jpg

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

body_monalisa.jpg

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

essay to dad

On a bright, sunny Saturday in 1960, my father piled us into the car to go see where Daddy worked at his new job at RCA’s David Sarnoff Research Labs on Route 1. After that, we drove up what I now know was Washington Road, and as we passed Guyot Hall, which then had a majestic greenhouse perched on the side, my dad said, “This is Princeton University. It’s the best school in the world.”

“Then that’s where I’m going!” I piped up from the back seat.

Mom turned around and started to say “Oh no, you caaaaa … ” before, for the first and only time in my life, I heard my father shush her.

“Shhhhh. Mary, don’t discourage her!” Princeton, of course, was only for boys at that time, but since I was only 8 years old, I had no idea.

We headed to the Princeton Battlefield for a picnic under the witness oak tree that fell not too long ago on a windless day, and when I got home, I wrote with my yellow pencil in my black-and-white marbled composition book. “I saw Princton (cq) School. I am going there. We had plums.”

It took Princeton a while longer to catch up.

By the time I arrived at Princeton again, a decade had passed. In the interim, we had moved to Indianapolis. Quite possibly Princeton’s emphasis on geographical distribution helped me gain admission because, in just the second year of coeducation, there were only 100-something women in my class. It all was so new that my guidance counselor at Lawrence Central High School marveled that the village of Princeton had a college, so it was up to me to explain that the school was in Princeton, New Jersey, not Indiana.

Princeton, to say the least, was intimidating to a kid from the Midwest. When I looked around, my classmates all seemed to be better prepared than anyone was in my public high school, which was mostly known for making Sports Illustrated for the longest losing streak in high school basketball history. On the other hand, my Princeton classmates had been to Europe — heck, some of them lived in Europe. They had names I recognized, parents I saw on TV, done things and been places I had only read about. After being one of the smartest kids in my high school, I went to precept wondering if I was smart enough to be there at all. I hadn’t ever written a paper.

When I did a story for The Daily Princetonian on the onset of grade inflation and “the demise of the Gentleman C” (awarded just for showing up) that had crept to a B, the great sociology professor Marvin Bressler chided me.

“Look around. Your classmates are the nation’s best and brightest. It’ll be up to you to solve the world’s problems.”

“Uh-oh.”

For years, I passed on returning to Reunions. The early intimidation of being a little Indiana guppy in a rather big tweedy pond had stuck. I wasn’t “almost famous” or remarkable at all, and no string of erudite initials or marching rows of zeroes in my bank account followed my name. I felt like I hadn’t measured up.

But age wins. The desire to see old friends triumphs. The ego takes a back seat to love. And our friends welcome us. Eventually, I went back and then, back and back and back. Despite my fears, the greatest danger I experienced at Reunions was when I had to leap out of the way of a careening golf cart piloted by a grinning former Cabinet secretary.

That’s Princeton for you! Aren’t we all just so happy to be back? They can dig up the tennis courts with the charming gazebo and reconfigure the buildings and bring new shops to Palmer Square and it just doesn’t matter. (Well, maybe except for the Dinky.) In our hearts the old place is still as we remember it and we all look just the same.

In the end, Bressler was right. I can barely list the fields affected by my classmates who improved television, grew companies, worked in Congress, wrote books, served on presidential commissions, created new knowledge, and made oodles of money they then lavished on new buildings for the rest of us (thanks for Whitman College, Meg ’77!).

But here’s a sis-boom-bah to those who quietly used the critical thinking skills acquired in our precepts and the knowledge gained from the great books of the past to remake our lives and the lives of those around us, perhaps in smaller but still meaningful ways: Lawyers and librarians, teachers and farmers, moms and accountants — we raised families and served on school boards and did our jobs and helped whomever we could. We, in today’s parlance, showed up. That’s “Princeton in the nation’s service,” too.

And I’ll be glad to see all of us again this year at our 50th celebration of when we were young.

More than 30 years after my graduation, I was driving my newly admitted daughter (Victoria Tobolsky ’12) to freshman week when I nearly went off the road. Suddenly it had hit me — I had a female legacy at Princeton. I marveled that she was placed in a suite of eight women, which would have been a significant percentage of the women in my class.

I was back home again when I got her first excited call, reporting that her mailbox at the Frist Campus Center (thanks Bill ’74!) was eerily numbered 0870, her year of matriculation and mine. Plus it was punctuated by the fact that the Class of 2012 was the first class to finally achieve an equal split between males and females.

Karma, destiny, coincidence — who knows? Courtesy of an older daughter’s Hindu wedding, I have Indian family members now who would say the Universe always knows where we belong.

And this weekend, for all of us, it’s right here.

So now I’ve started a female line at Princeton. I wonder what will happen if one of my daughters has a son. With any luck, I have acquired the genes of my mother, who tried to squelch me and died just recently at 96 (she was rather unsquelchable herself). I can picture myself in the Old Guard, perhaps with my daughter driving a golf cart — or maybe a hovercraft by then — and waving at that grandson at his first Reunions. That is, if Princeton lets him in.

essay to dad

By Minrose Gwin

Fathers don’t fare well in my fiction. They are white supremacist killers and domestic abusers. They trick their wives into becoming pregnant. They have affairs. They abandon their families.

My biological father, Albert Coleman Bryan Jr., was 22 when I was born. He was a dashing air force pilot who flew off into the wide blue yonder, leaving my mother and me grounded.

He had red curly hair and freckles and a charming grin. It’s a face I don’t remember, if indeed I ever saw it. My parents split up around the time I was born.

I grew up tasting the bitterness of my father’s absence, especially at Christmas, when he sent me expensive presents. My mother would hand them to me without a word, and I would know to go into my closet to open them.

By then, she had remarried. In addition to a stepdad, I had a brother and sister. Our stockings were filled with bananas and oranges, little else.

In my closet, I would open the presents from my father, with cards signed by his secretary or someone in a store. Among the many gifts over the years, he sent me a pearl necklace, a portable typewriter and a birthstone ring. I’d know to tuck them away in my closet and never to mention them to my brother and sister.

Decades later, on an afternoon in May, I pull into a strip mall in Chapel Hill, N.C. I’m taking a break from grading end-of-semester papers. Before I get out of the car, I check my email to find a note from a woman named Jann, who informs me that she is my adopted half sister.

“What about my father?” I ask. “Is he still alive?”

Yes, Jann writes, my father is still alive. He is living at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville, Ala. He is 91 years old. Would I like to see him?

Jann discovered my existence when she was clearing out our father’s house, before he went into the home. She reached into a pants pocket and found an old wallet. Tucked inside was a tattered photo of me, a snaggletoothed first-grader at Church Street Elementary School in Tupelo, Miss. On the back was an inscription: Dear Daddy, Love, Minrose.

I had never thought of myself as a dirty little secret. My parents were married in the First Presbyterian Church. My mother wore the white dress with the long train. There was music and a dry reception in the church basement, my grandfather being a teetotaler. I was born two years later.

As soon as grades are posted, I book a flight to Alabama and throw some clothes in a suitcase. In Birmingham, I rent a car, spend the night in a ratty motel, and head for Huntsville the next morning. By the time I arrive at Jann’s condo, my head is pounding. I take a double dose of my blood pressure medication.

The humidity makes my shirt stick to my back as Jann ushers me into the nursing home. She tells me I’ll need to speak loudly; our father is almost deaf.

I anticipate a private meeting in his room, poignant, with perhaps a touch of awkwardness. What I get instead is a crowded lunchroom: the clanging of trays, voices garbled by age and infirmity, very, very old men, the stench of urine mixed with the odor of overcooked meat. Jann leads me through the hubbub, homing in on a crumpled, hairless version of myself in a wheelchair.

“Daddy!” she belts out. “Here’s your daughter come to see you. This is Minrose, your daughter!”

Jann then addresses the room at large: the old men, all white; the young attendants, all Black. “She’s his daughter, and it’s the first time they’ve ever met!” She is bursting with enthusiasm.

Heads swivel. Forks pause in midair. Attendants smile.

My father turns to me, as slow as an ancient tortoise.

“What took you so long?” he says.

Jann and the attendants laugh. I do not.

It takes me a moment to absorb the fact that these are the first words my father has ever uttered to me, his 69-year-old daughter. I thought I had left my bitterness behind but now I taste it on my tongue.

“Why did you leave?” I find myself shouting.

The silence in the room thickens. Someone calls out, “Not very nice.”

I see two dozen sets of eyes glaring at me. My own little personal drama, I realize, has become a soap opera, and I’m the villain.

My father offers a toothless grin. “Just stupid, I guess,” he says with a laugh. And I find myself laughing, too.

Later, I will discover that my father had delivered babies in Huntsville. Women loved him. In his heyday, he was a jokester, a pilot, a dancer, a chef — the life of the party.

During his second marriage, he impregnated two single women, first his anesthesiology nurse, then his receptionist, both of whom gave up their baby boys for adoption, meaning I have two half brothers I’ve never met.

In the nursing home, I tell my father he has a granddaughter in Dallas. He asks about my mother. I tell him she died two decades ago of ovarian cancer. I also tell him she became mentally ill, that I had to commit her to psychiatric hospitals — a nice private one, then a grim state institution — against her will.

What I don’t tell him: I knew, early on, that something had happened to my mother. Something had gone click, turned off. Old photographs show me, a curly-haired, round-faced child clutching a stuffed rabbit twice my size as my mother gazes off into the distance.

He shakes his head. Then he mutters something.

“Speak up, Daddy,” Jann commands.

He examines my face. I bend down to hear what he’s about to say.

He whispers, “Why didn’t you come before?”

He died two weeks later. Jann wrote me that the Episcopal Church was filled. I was not mentioned in the obituary.

Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels “The Accidentals,” “Promise” and “The Queen of Palmyra.” Her next novel, “Beautiful Dreamers,” comes out this summer.

Pune Porsche crash: Why teen who killed 2 has been let off with writing an essay while father has been detained

A 17-year-old in Maharashtra’s Pune has been granted bail on the condition that he write a 300-word essay after allegedly driving drunk and killing two people. Pune Porsche crash: Why teen who killed 2 has been let off with writing an essay while father has been detained

Picture this: you indulge in drink driving, and then allegedly run over two people, killing them. What would be your punishment by law? In case of a 17-year-old in Pune, he was granted bail for the incident on the condition that he writes an essay on the crash and works with the traffic police for 15 days.

While it may sound incredulous and unbelievable, it is, in fact, a shocking truth. A teen in Pune has been let off on bail on the condition that he work with Pune’s Yerwada traffic police, compose an essay on the accident, undergo treatment for alcohol dependency and then submit a report thereafter.

The incident has left many balking at the court’s decision. Pune’s Police has, in fact, said that the teen should be tried as an adult, adding that they would appeal to a higher court now.

And on Tuesday (21 May), the father of the accused teen has been detained in the crime.

We take a closer look at the entire incident, the laws involved and what society has to say about this.

The incident

In the wee hours of Sunday (19 May), Aneesh Awadhiya and his friend Ashwini Koshta, both 24, died when the motorbike they were on was hit by a Porsche allegedly driven by a 17-year-old in the Kalyani Nagar locality of Pune in the western state of Maharashtra. While Ashwini died on the spot, Aneesh was shifted to a city hospital, where he died soon after.

Investigating the matter, the Pune Police then arrested a 17-year-old, who they believed was behind the wheel of the luxury car when it hit the bike. Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said that the minor, belonging to a prominent realtor’s family, was celebrating his Class XII results at a local pub, where he was seen consuming alcohol before the crash.

While he was heading home from the bar, the teen lost control of the car and rammed into a motorcycle at the Kalyani Nagar junction around 2.30 am.

“Upon inquiry, the minor has said his father had handed over the grey Porsche to him despite knowing that he had no driver’s training and did not have a driver’s licence. He has also said his father allowed him to party with his friends and that his father was aware that he was consuming alcohol,” reads the FIR registered by Assistant Police Inspector Vishwanath Todkari at Yerwada Police Station, as per an Indian Express report.

Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Pune City Police Vijay Kumar Magar arrested the juvenile, after booking him for rash and negligent driving, as well as causing harm by endangering life or personal safety under IPC sections 304A, 279, 337, 338, and 427, in addition to relevant sections of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act.

Teen granted bail, outrage ensues

After being apprehended, the 17-year-old was produced before the holiday court on Sunday afternoon where authorities sought his custody and permission to try him as an adult. However, the court refused and granted him bail within 14 hours of the crime under certain conditions.

The police stated that bail was granted as the court did not find the crime committed by the juvenile to be serious.

The teen’s lawyer, Prashant Patil, said the court granted bail on certain conditions. First, the teen would have to “work with traffic police of Yerwada for 15 days”. Secondly, he would have to pen a 300-word essay on the ‘effect of road accident and their solution’. As part of his bail conditions, the teen accused would also have to undergo treatment from a doctor to help him quit drinking and “take psychiatric counselling” and submit the report to the court.

After news broke of the bail conditions in the matter, outrage ensued, with many accusing the judge of going soft on the accused. Many expressed their contempt for the system on X; some calling the Indian judiciary “a joke”. Another wrote, “Hope the criminal writes a good essay to impress the honourable judge. Just can’t express how I feel about it.”

Family of the two victims also expressed anger at the court’s decision. Koshta’s family in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh said they were dismayed by the bail conditions. “We are in shock,” her uncle Jugal Kishor Koshta told NDTV . “It is condemnable that he should get bail. He and his parents should be investigated.”

Koshta’s other uncle told NDTV , “We want his bail cancelled and he should remain in police custody. Because of him, an innocent girl, who has seen nothing of life, died.”

Awadhiya’s family also echoed similar sentiments. Atmaram Awadhiya, the grandfather, said that the teen should not be granted bail. “Two people have died in this accident. This is completely wrong. We want strict punishment. The bail granted to the accused should be cancelled,” he was quoted as telling NDTV .

The victim’s uncle also chimed in, saying: “The accused, a minor, was drunk and was driving at 240 km per hour. He did not have a driving licence. This is murder, not accident.”

Following the outrage, Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis reached out to the Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and asked him to ensure there was no soft-pedalling against the accused in the Porsche hit-and-run case. And following this, Commissioner Kumar said that they would appeal the order in a higher court. “We will not leave any stone unturned to prove that this is a heinous crime,” he was quoted as telling India Today .

Father detained

On Tuesday (21 May), the Pune Police detained the father of the teen accused from Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad, and will bring him back to the city for further probe.

The father, a prominent realtor in Pune, was on the run since the incident. He has now been booked under the provision of sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act on the charges of allowing his minor son to drive the Porsche and consume liquor. Section 75 deals with “wilful neglect of a child, or exposing a child to mental or physical illnesses,” while section 77 deals with supplying a child with intoxicating liquor or drugs.

According to the FIR lodged in connection with the incident, the man, despite knowing his son did not have a valid driving licence, gave him the car, thus endangering the latter’s life, and allowed him to party even as the father knew that he consumes liquor.

Apart from this, the Pune police have arrested Cosie restaurant owner Pralhad Bhutda and manager Sachin Katkar and Hotel Blak manager Sandip Sangle for allegedly serving alcohol to the juvenile, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade said.

What the law says

The accused teen has been charged under Section 304A of the IPC, which deals with causing death by negligence. Moreover, he has been charged with Section 279 of the IPC, which deals with rash driving.

But then why has his father been arrested? As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, parents/guardians of juveniles shall be held guilty in case of an offence by a juvenile. The law mandates that a fine of Rs 25,000 with three years’ imprisonment will be imposed and the juvenile will be tried under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act while the registration of the vehicle will be cancelled.

The law also states that the juvenile shall not be granted a driver’s licence until the minor has attained the age of 25.

This change was introduced after a parliamentary panel had suggested higher penalties for traffic offences. In fact, the panel had recommended treating accidents caused by drink driving as pre-meditated crimes rather than as cases of ‘negligence’.

I ran away from a troubled teen program and escaped for good. This is my story

Erich Bartlebaugh

Lately, I’ve been having nightmares that I’m back in boarding school.

Each dream begins innocuously enough. I find myself walking down a hallway past classmates standing in line in the dining hall. Sometimes, one of them is suddenly tackled to the ground. They struggle under the weight of fellow student who tries to restrain them. Other times, I’m sitting in a corner with my eyes fixed on a blank wall as days stretch into weeks and months.

The faces are all a blur in the dreams, but the swirl of fear and distress, the pounding in my chest and the rage that I feel are sharp.

The dreams are more like memories, as tangible as they were to me in the days after my parents dropped me off at The DeSisto School in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and I began to realize that although I was surrounded by people, I was desperately alone.

Erich Bartlebaugh

I started watching the true crime documentary “ The Program,” directed by troubled teen program alum Katherine Kubler, at my sister-in-law’s recommendation. “You guys have to see this,” she said soon after it debuted, certain that my wife and I would have seen nothing like it.

As she laid out the documentary's details — a group of teens sent off to a behavior modification facility — I realized that she was describing a story that was not unlike the one I experienced as a teenager.

Like Kubler, I was a high school student when my parents determined that I was beyond their control. I’d been diagnosed with ADHD and was expelled from two schools, the second one being a military academy.

While Kubler experienced the shock of being taken away by strangers and dropped off at a school without any parental contact or explanation of where she was going, I actually picked out DeSisto.

After collecting me from the military school, my mother sat me down in her office, handed me a few brochures, and, to my surprise, told me to find the next school that I would go to.

Eventually, I came across one for DeSisto, which sold a story about a therapeutic environment for artistic kids who were misunderstood. The school featured images of a picturesque estate that drew me in.

I never suspected that within 48 hours of my arrival, I would be sobbing, pleading to be sent back home.

Erich Bartlebaugh

Not long after selecting DeSisto, I was driving up to an idyllic Massachusetts town nestled in the mountains. My mother, step-father and I spent my last night before I headed to DeSisto at a bed and breakfast. It was October, and I still remember the autumn leaves and their colors. I took a long bath in a clawfoot tub and savored a king-sized Snickers bar. I had a feeling it was going to be my last for a long time.

Immediately after entering the gated property, I realized I had landed in a new society, governed by new rules. The entire campus was in the middle of a two-week-long sit-in meeting, prompted by someone graffitiing the boys’ bathroom. Pressure was put on every student until someone confessed or was outed by a peer.

“Sit in” was the start of new vocabulary I became fluent in, reflective of DeSisto’s authoritarian streak.

Immediately after entering the gated property, I realized I had landed in a new society, governed by new rules.

Rather than friends, new kids were assigned “buddies.” Two students were paired together and responsible, by proxy, for whatever their buddy did or said. We could never be more than a hand’s reach away from a buddy or from another student, for that matter. We were required to travel in groups of three, the reason being that a pair could come up with a notion to run off, but adding an additional student into the mix undermined cohesion.

Erich Bartlebaugh

Every morning was anxiety ridden because of all the potential punishments.

If you broke the dress code or stained your outfit, you were "suited" and had to wear a formal suit, including tie and dress socks, until you were given reprieve. If the issue continued, you would be "sheeted," which meant you weren’t allowed to wear clothes — just a sheet tied like a toga.

“Ghosted” meant everyone had to ignore your presence. “Silenced” meant you weren’t allowed to make a sound. “No PC” meant you couldn’t have physical contact with anyone. “Hand held” meant you  had  to hold hands, sometimes for hours, no matter what tasks needed to be done.

Erich Bartlebaugh

During "limit structures," students were held to the ground by other students and verbally assaulted with personal jabs. The goal was to break a person down.

“Cornering” was DeSisto’s version of a time-out. We had to sit in a metal chair facing a corner. Once, I was cornered for 60 days. I was only able to get up to use the bathroom and eat. I was allowed limited access to showers. No phone calls with parents or interactions with other students. Nothing. I was so furious and despondent that, at some point, I began to rattle off the F-word over and over again. That was the only curse word we weren’t allowed to say. Each time I said it warranted a $1 penalty.

Then, there was the Farm, the prison of DeSisto. There, students lived separated from the rest of campus, deprived of all possessions including personal clothing. We couldn’t contact home. We had to do everything as a group — including bathroom time. Entire dorms were farmed at once. For example, if the nightly dorm meeting went past midnight because we couldn’t reach a group consensus, we all would be farmed. Happened all the time.

Once, I was withheld from seeing my parents because I was accused of violence for smacking my hand on a sofa during a dorm meeting. This was devastating, and a defining moment when I realized I had no freedom.

Erich Bartlebaugh

My days at DeSisto were tedious and toiling. I was there for just under three years, it still feels like a decade. Every day dragged, and every week and month was so painfully slow that I just lived day to day. I saw how the desperate circumstances took a toll on all of us.

Some of my fellow students went along with situations most would see as inappropriate in exchange for rewards and freedom. Students didn’t have access to television, but some of the administrators had them in their rooms. Once, a male staffer of the school invited two other boys and me to watch a movie in his quarters. He’d been sitting with his arms around them on the sofa when he asked me to come sit by him. I got a funny feeling and said no. I was never invited back. Later, as I tried to make sense of the things that happened there and connected with former students, I heard stories that confirmed my instincts weren’t wrong.

I became defiant, running away when I found my chances. I ran away from DeSisto three times. The first two times, I was dragged back in a van. My final time, I was determined.

I escaped out of the Farm’s bathroom window. It was the only window that opened in the building. I had convinced the sole staff member to let me close the bathroom door for privacy. As I crawled into the window, he opened the door and yelled. I looked back at him and jumped. I knew at that point I had to just keep running.

After three years at DeSisto, I ran off into the swampy woods beyond the school, my feet sinking into the mud as I chased after my freedom with little foresight about my next move. Nobody came far enough into the wetlands to find me. Since I was 18 when I ran, once I was off campus, they could not legally bring me back.

I hiked the main road into town, putting together a plan to ask for some quarters to make a call. I was able to contact an old employee named Luis, whom some of the students trusted. He agreed to pick me up at the Piggly Wiggly in town.

There’s a reason I didn’t call my parents. By the time I left, if there was one lesson I’d learned from my time at DeSisto, it was that I could not rely on them to understand. In “The Program,” Kubler explains her parents were conditioned into believing that anything negative she said about the program was a lie or manipulation. DeSisto’s parents were instructed on this, too. They were advised that if they took in their children after they ran away, their children would be expelled, and years of education — and tuition — would become null and void.

By the time I got to the parking lot, it was dark. I walked over to a trash can and found it had just been emptied and lined with a new bag, which I took and used as a sleeping bag. I spent my first night outside of DeSisto in almost three years, lying on a bench outside, hungry, thirsty and shivering.

So much had happened and changed since I was 15 years old and soaking in the clawfoot tub with a Snickers bar.

Founder Michael DeSisto died in 2003 and DeSisto itself shut down in 2004 after controversies, including  fights with the state of Massachusetts over licensing  and allegations of child abuse. The Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services wrote, in a complaint, the school “denies students basic human rights” through practices like strip searches and farming students.

In 2004, DeSisto was under state investigation for incidents including a staffer waiting more than 90 minutes to take a student to the hospital after she self-harmed and swallowed two razor blades, the  Boston Globe  reported at the time.

“We admit our response was less than adequate and we’ve dealt with it,” Frank McNear, the school’s director at the time, said at the time. “You’ve got a lot of kids with a lot of pathologies here. I won’t tell you we’re a perfect school, but we’re totally committed to addressing problems as they surface.”

I’ve lived so many different lives since leaving. I’ve spent most of my life trying to push the negative parts of my past aside and focus on moving forward.

But every once in a while, something pulls me back — terminology, a headline, and more recently, “The Program.” I’ve been told before that I display post-traumatic stress symptoms, but it wasn’t until recently that I connected my feelings, my anger, to my school experience.

Erich Bartlebaugh

I’ve started opening up about my feelings more in the years since I escaped, especially as other lawsuits against the school validate that I wasn’t just a teenager, dramatizing my experience to make my parents feel guilty. My concerns were valid. I've felt less alone.

Survivors, if you can call us that, tend to discuss it amongst themselves, but I never really shared the full extent with anyone outside of them, not even my wife.

Our community of former DeSisto students is more than plagued by the memories of what happened there. Too often, we are confronted by the concerning reality that DeSisto’s body of alumni is vulnerable to death by suicide. The death announcements of a familiar name or face continue to haunt us.

During COVID, I learned that my friend Sarah died by suicide. I still tear up when I think of her. She was a talented performer and an amazing illustrator. A group of us used to hang out after “meal jobs” were done, when we cleaned the dining room, washed the dishes and prepared for the next meal. She was full of life and laughter but struggled with self-esteem and low self worth. She was a really special and kind person.

In the decades after we left DeSisto, it’s my understanding that her struggle went on for years. She deserved better.

I can’t entirely say that my experience at DeSisto was all bad. The truth is, I really began my journey to adulthood there. I learned self-awareness, self-worth and work ethic. I learned responsibility for my actions as well as my emotions. But I also learned distrust, abandonment and the level at which my own vulnerability could be exploited.

But I can say that much of my life in the years since has felt like climbing out of a massive hole.

Erich Bartlebaugh

After a failed attempt at community college and many odd jobs, I found direction and put all my energy into graduating from art school. My relationship with my mom and stepdad was OK at this point, but everything was still unresolved. My biological dad and I spoke once every five years at this point.

I continued to struggle, but eventually, in my 20s, I got my bachelor’s. I learned to understand my parents more. I married and had two beautiful twin boys. I got divorced, I got sober and eventually, I found myself escaped from the black and away from the threat of tipping over the edge. In 2014, I learned what it was to have a real relationship with trust, love and respect. Seven years later, we welcomed our beautiful boy.

I look at my sons and see how different they are from one another — and see the similarities they have with the old me.

I worry about whether they will struggle the same ways I did, and what will I do — what  can  I do — if they do? Truth is, I could never imagine sending my kids away and frankly, I never would. But I also don’t have a clue what I could do as an alternative. If DeSisto was the wrong choice, what would the right one have been? Was I in that situation as a teen due to nurture or nature?

I appreciate my sons’ personalities and struggles. I so desperately want to make sure that they never feel alone. They are the faces I force my brain to sharpen in on of when the memories of DeSisto begin to creep in, threatening to blur my current reality. They are the ones that bring me back to my life.
