You may wish to explain why you are interested in the exchange programme, and why have you chosen HKU as host university. There is no word limit.

TPg Application

Check admission and application details.

Once you have decided on your interested programme, read the University’s admission website and/or attend information session to find out the admission criteria, required documents and application procedure. Jot down the type of supporting documents you need to submit, work backwards from the application deadline to compile your to-do list which may include writing sample or design portfolio. (See “Timeline for Application Preparation” below)

Sometimes specific undergraduate courses might be required for admission into certain professional programmes. If that is the case, enroll for the missing courses as soon as possible at HKU or in study abroad programmes (if those courses are not offered in the coming semesters).

Are admission tests required?

In many cases, official score reports of GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) and/or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) are required. Check Educational Testing Service ( https://www.ets.org/ ) and Graduate Management Admission Council ( https://www.gmac.com/ ) for test dates, and you could find online video courses/practice tests for practicing. The common advice is to devote 2 to 3 months for the preparation.

English proficiency test score is also required by some universities for candidates whose first language is not English. To prepare for your TOEFL and IELTS examinations, you can refer to their websites on Educational Testing Service ( https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/register/ ) and British Council ( https://ielts.britishcouncil.org.hk/iorps/html/registration/showExamSessionListServlet.do ). In HKU, you can make use of learning materials in the Library and the test materials in the Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES).

Timeline for application preparation

Early preparation is the key to success. You should start the preparation work one year in advance. The flowchart below is for your reference:

Documents to prepare

After identifying the preferred programmes, it is time to prepare the application materials per application and entrance requirements:

Your referees should be familiar with you, and be able to highlight your experience, abilities, and character. To select the right referees, you should first refer to the referee requirement of the application. If you have to provide a recommendation letter from a teacher, it should focus on your academic skills and achievements. If you have to submit a reference letter from an employer, the school would expect the letter to reflect skills that are relevant for your postgraduate study.

  • TOEFL / IELTS / GRE/ GMAT transcript If you are planning to apply different programmes in different graduate schools, ensure you have prepared sufficient copies for application. If the school requests electronic score submission, provide the correct institution code to the Test Centre(s).
  • Personal statement Personal statement is an important part of your postgraduate study application. You have to describe precisely your background, goals, personal skills, and experience to support your application within certain word limit. There is no perfect template for personal statement, but we have summarized some tips for you:
  • Highlight your unique strengths and characters which are relevant to the programme(s)
  • Use examples to support your highlighted strengths and characters, and elaborate how they apply in your postgraduate study
  • Show your enthusiasm to the programme(s) and outline your future plan after completing the programme(s)
  • Keep polishing your personal statement. You can seek help from CAES Communication Support Services ( https://caescss.hku.hk/ ) and your Academic Adviser for feedback

DON’Ts

  • Never copy or buy a personal statement, or share yours. Academic integrity is the fundamental requirement of studying, and such behaviour will affect your application
  • Do not overstate your strengths and achievements. Your interviewer will spot the differences during the interview
  • Never prepare your personal statement in the last minute. You have to spend much time to polish and amend the contents
  • Do not overlook spelling and grammatical errors, and seek help from CAES Communication Support Services ( https://caescss.hku.hk/ ) if needed

How to Write the Perfect Personal Statement when Applying to Universities in Hong Kong for an Undergraduate Degree?

The personal statement is the application component in which the students have the opportunity to articulate their skills and experience. This section is an essential component in your application when applying to universities in Hong Kong for an undergraduate degree.

What is a Personal Statement?

A Personal Statement is a very important part of your application because it is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills, personality and achievements to the university. It is a 4000-character essay written by you which allows universities to understand why you are applying and why you are the best fit for the university.

While writing your personal statement, make sure to answer:

  • What is your background?
  • What have you achieved?
  • What have you done which stands out from other applicants?
  • Why are you a good fit for the course?
  • Why do you want to study in Hong Kong?
  • How can you contribute to the University?
  • What have you learnt from your previous experiences?

Tips to write a good personal statement

To produce an effective and well written personal statement, we have a few tips:

  • First off, plan the structure of the essay. Do this by creating a mind map which will include your background, your extracurricular activities, why you want to apply and other important details.
  • Emphasize the things you have done and the experiences you have been through. This could include a personal story or an anecdote which stands out from other applicants.
  • Be honest about your strengths, achievements and most importantly, make it your own work.
  • Remember to always keep in mind the character count. The personal statement should be coherent, concise and easy to understand.
  • Make sure to proofread your essay . Grammatical errors, sentence structure and language play a very important role as they can greatly influence your application decision.

Remember that the personal statement speaks about you so the most important thing is to be yourself while writing the personal statement.

If you need help with personal statements or application essays, get in touch with our university-specific mentors at UniRely. For more information, please visit our website unirely.com to learn more about the process of applying to universities in HK for an undergraduate degree.

Affiliated Hospitals

Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) is our major teaching hospital. It is also a tertiary referral centre for complex and advanced medical services for the entire Hong Kong territory. Most of the Faculty’s clinical departments are located at QMH, which offer dedicated teaching and learning activities and professional clinical training for our students.

Apart from QMH, learning also takes place in other public hospitals of the Hospital Authority and private hospitals such as the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, and the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital across the border. All these hospitals are the key partners of the Faculty in teaching, training and research under the HKU Health System. The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital also provides an invaluable platform for our students to receive clinical training and attain a more in-depth understanding of the systems and practices across the border.

Academic Advising

To cater for the special curriculum structure of the MBBS programme, you will first be taken care of by a Pre-Clinical Academic Adviser in Year 1 and 2 study, followed by an Enrichment Year Mentor in Year 3 and a clinical teacher as Clinical Academic Adviser when proceeding to Year 4 until graduation.

Many of these teachers of our Faculty are graduates of our own MBBS programme and experienced clinicians who are passionate in teaching and mentorship of our students. They are committed to providing a comfortable environment for you to adapt to the distinct challenges of medical school life.

Nurturing Community

A positive and harmonious culture and environment is fundamental to the wellbeing of every member and is co-created by all members in the community. To cultivate such an environment, HKUMed has established the Teaching and Learning Charter, which articulates the essential values and responsibilities that members of HKUMed are expected to honour. By this Charter, teachers and students commit to an agreed list of values, attitudes and behaviours. Students of HKUMed affirm that they will take good care of themselves and the others, being kind, supportive, diligent and responsible; likewise, teachers of HKUMed affirm that they will be professional, respectful and supportive to the others, serving as good role models for students.

“Academic advising is a crucial part of a student-centred approach in medical education. At HKUMed, we firmly believe that our medical students learn best in a productive environment, surrounded by supportive teachers as role models. We are very proud that every one of our academic advisers are teachers who have actively volunteered their time and efforts towards guiding our students’ academic and professional development. In addition to mentorship, our advisers serve as the important link between the students and our faculty wellness and academic resources.

During the first two years we pair our students with dedicated teachers to help our students adjust to the challenges of medical school life. During the clinical years, our students begin to develop specialty interests. At this stage, we allow our students to choose their own academic advisers from among our clinical teaching staff for a more personalised career development. At every step there is something our advisers can offer our students.”

Guided by our world-class teaching faculty, your learning will take place through a multi-pronged pedagogical approach of problem-based learning, self-initiated learning, and peer and collaborative learning, conducted in a multi-modal learning environment via lectures, small-group tutorials and innovative multimedia platforms. You will develop effective skills for communication and teamwork in medical contexts, and the skills and mindset of a competent doctor with bold willingness to test theories.

Our excellent digital resources, supplemented with interactive online forums, will enable you to learn at your own pace and in your own style. We have a team of multimedia learning experts dedicated to the development of high-quality, interactive e-learning resources. Proctored written examinations are also gradually turning paperless, conducted on the e-Assessment platform specially developed for the purpose.

Our programme is a pioneer in the use of advanced technologies, such as augmented reality (AR)/ virtual reality (VR), gamification and simulation in teaching and learning to help students learn basic and advanced medical knowledge effectively. As an early adopter of VR technology, HKUMed is one of the world’s best equipped medical schools for learning of anatomy with the newly inaugurated Techmezz for VR at our Yu Chun Keung Medical Library. Tools such as Anatomage, a fully segmented real human 3D dissection platform, allow for exploration and learning of human anatomy in innovative ways.

The MBBS curriculum embraces technological innovations in order to match the rapid developments in the field of medicine. During your MBBS training, you will have the opportunities to learn and apply the following latest technologies: •   Precision Medicine, which covers literacy in big data science and its application in clinical medicine, practice and research; •   Telehealth, which involves the use of telecommunications technologies in medical practices, such as tele-consultation for outpatients and tele-pharmacy; •   Ultrasonography, which involves application of the point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) device, known to many as “tomorrow’s stethoscope”.

As early as the first semester of Year 1, you will start learning the interpersonal and clinical skills necessary for effective and compassionate care for patients. Much of the learning will take place in the purpose-built Clinical Skills Training Centre, assisted by a well-developed clinical skills e-platform.

Our programme goes well beyond vocational training. Your third year of study, which we call the Enrichment Year, offers a golden opportunity to explore areas of interest in either medical or non-medical fields and design your own learning programme in Hong Kong or abroad. Similarly, after the Fourth Summative Assessment, the 4-week MBBS Elective lets you explore a medical area of your choice.

Alongside learning that takes place within hospitals, you will gain first-hand experience in a wide variety of community-based settings involving family physicians, maternal and child health services, hospices and patient support groups. This exposure to different arenas of the public health system enables development of a holistic perspective on patient management and a richer understanding of the integration between primary and secondary care.

Ethical principles and humanitarian values are absolutely essential for doctors to meet the needs and demands of 21st century healthcare. You will learn how these principles and values underpin healthcare practice, as well as your professional and legal obligations, through the medical ethics and medical humanities programmes. They are developed and coordinated by our Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU) with the aim of cultivating professional doctors capable of engaging with their patients from a position of awareness of their own humanity.

HKUMed is at the frontier of global medical research, driven by a strong commitment to improving human health through scientific discovery and advancement in medicine. Research requires and enables you to develop intellectual and analytical skills for a vast array of situations. As a medical student, you will have opportunities to participate in research training that leads to output in scientific journals and significant societal impact. Your research can be clinic-based or laboratory-based, and it can be either part of a project with Faculty staff members or self-initiated under the supervision of a teacher during the Enrichment Year/MBBS Elective.

It is critical for students to learn how to work effectively in an inter-professional team for the delivery of modern healthcare. HKUMed has taken the lead in delivering inter-professional educational experiences where medical, nursing and pharmacy students learn how to communicate, interact and work with one another. For students with demonstrated academic potential and interest in developing inter-professional competence, we offer the opportunity to enrol in intercalated programmes such as the Master of Public Health programme, with scholarships and other forms of financial support.

Teaching is an important role expected from all MBBS graduates in the healthcare profession. As such, the MBBS 140 Curriculum also features the Student in Medical Education (SIME) initiative, fostering a culture where teaching is an important and integral component of professional responsibility and competence. Peer tutoring activities can help cultivate medical students’ basic teaching skills to prepare them for their future roles as trainers, supervisors, or educators.

Consideration of Other Factors

  • Interview performance
  • Additional subjects (in Category A and C)
  • Student learning profile

Consideration of HKDSE Combined Results & Penalty for HKDSE Repeaters

  • Latest results in HKDSE in the recent three years

  • HKDSE results;
  • interview performance;
  • participation in Special Schemes ; and
  • extra-curricular activities / non-academic achievements.

Please check here for the minimum entrance requirements for MBBS. In JUPAS Admissions 2023, “44” was the lower quartile for JS6456. Please click here for details.

Please note that 1. HKDSE Chemistry or Combined Science with Chemistry as component is the compulsory subject for admission to the MBBS programme; 2. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of Cantonese; 3. Minimum score is for candidates’ reference only. Satisfying minimum score does not guarantee admission.

Grade obtained in Citizenship and Social Development will NOT be included in the admissions score calculation.

Liberal Studies taken before 2024 can be used to fulfil the University Entrance Requirements from 2024 onwards.  “Level 2” obtained in Liberal Studies before 2024 will be equivalent to “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development.

M1 / M2 will be recognised as equivalent to a full elective subject and can be included in the calculation of admission scores.

It is a must for MBBS students to be able to communicate in Cantonese since they will come into contact with patients and most patients in Hong Kong speak Cantonese. Candidates’ ability to communicate in Cantonese will be assessed during the interviews.

The score of the latest attempt of the retaken subject (in the recent three years) will be used in score calculation and a 10% penalty will be imposed. For candidates who took HKDSE more than once but without any repeated subjects, the number of sittings in HKDSE will be taken into consideration when assessing the candidate.

Please note that the University views M1/M2 as the same subject and 10% penalty will apply if candidates took M1 and M2 in different years. An example is as follows:

A 10% penalty will be imposed on Mathematics Extended Part – M1 score of 2024 if the subject is one of the best 6 subjects to be used in score calculation for admission in 2024.

  • Candidates who have placed MBBS programme in their Band A choice in JUPAS;

  • Candidates who are nominated under JUPAS special schemes .

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview that is arranged by our Faculty via email around:

Yes. Eligible candidates will be invited to an interview in July, if they put MBBS as a Band A choice only after the release of HKDSE results .

The MBBS interviews will be conducted face-to-face and no online interview will be arranged. Shortlisted candidates are expected to dress decently for the interview.

All non-school candidates who apply for the MBBS programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and will be compared with the overall calibre of the school candidates and the number of school candidates that year. They are required to provide their CV and post-secondary academic transcript (if any), and are strongly advised to include these documents in the SLP section. The entire academic record of the candidates and any other documents which are further requested will be reviewed and considered during the admission process. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview that is arranged by our Faculty via email:

Successful candidates who attended the December interview or the April interview are expected to receive a formal offer / conditional offer of admission by email within two months after the interview. Final admission decisions will be available on the application system by the end of August.

Due to the large number of applications received, we are unable to provide specific or individual feedback to candidates.

Candidates who take a gap year after high school graduation and have not enrolled in any institutions should include their activities engaged / to be engaged during the gap year in their CV. Supporting documentation for the listed activities, such as certificates and letters, should be uploaded to the application system for consideration as early as possible.

Candidates are required to have four AL subjects, excluding English and Chinese language subjects, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Global Perspectives and Research, Knowledge and Enquiry, Project Work, Thinking Skills, and Extended Project Qualification.

Candidates must take AL Chemistry.

Candidates applying to study MBBS must be able to communicate in Cantonese. In fulfilling the second language requirement by the University, candidates can take any language subjects as accepted by the University. For details of the second language requirement, please check here .

“Mathematics” and “Further Mathematics” will be considered as two separate AL subjects if two AL grades are awarded by the exam board, subject to the provisions of cash-in procedures and permissible combination of units as stipulated by the exam board.

Candidates are expected to take all subject exams at the end of the second year of the two-year GCEAL course.  It is acceptable to take the exams for Mathematics in the first year and the exams for the remaining subjects at the end of the second year of the two-year GCEAL course, e.g.:

Usually, candidates will do half of the units in the first year and then complete the remaining units in the second year of the two-year IAL course.  They are expected to cash-in the units for AL grades for all subjects in the same exam series at the end of the second year.  It is acceptable to cash-in the units for Mathematics in the first year and the units for the remaining subjects in the same exam series at the end of the second year, e.g.:

Candidates are expected to be enrolled in full-time study when completing the two-year GCEAL / IAL course.  Candidates spending less time studying than their counterparts who complete the full two-year GCEAL / IAL course will be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates must take Higher Level Chemistry.

MBBS does not have a preference for “Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches” and “Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation”.

NJCEE candidates may apply for the MBBS programme via the Mainland Admissions Scheme of HKU.  For details, please check here .

Current HKU non-final year undergraduate students may apply for an internal transfer if they are interested in MBBS. There is no fixed quota for internal transfer students each year but it is unlikely that the MBBS programme will accept internal transfer students.

Degree holders in any major can apply for MBBS through the Second Chance Scheme (「毅行醫路計劃」). The Scheme provides an additional route to professionals or degree holders in any discipline who had never studied medicine but would now like to pursuit a career in the medical field. Interested individuals may apply via the Non-JUPAS Admissions Scheme  in their undergraduate final year or after they graduate. Eligible candidates need to fulfill the University Entrance Requirements and Programme Specific Requirements, and should specify the reasons for applying for the MBBS programme in their personal statement.

Degree holders are not required to input individual undergraduate modules / components / courses results in the application system. They should provide all documents according to the Supporting Documents Checklist.

Degree holder candidates are expected to obtain at least a strong upper second class honours degree at a high-ranked university (i.e. in the upper half of the GPA / score range for the upper second class honours) (or the equivalent). However, satisfying minimum GPA / score as stated does not necessarily guarantee interview and/or admission.

Successful degree holder candidates will normally be required to start the MBBS programme from Year 1. They will be considered for advanced standing on a case-by-case basis, subject to their degree subjects and degree results.

The highest qualification the candidate achieved will be considered as his/her main qualification for admission, regardless of the time during which the qualification is attained. For example, if a degree holder candidate presents both university results and GCEAL results, the university results will be taken as his/her main qualification for admission and considered mainly. His/her application will be evaluated within the pool of degree holder candidates instead of the pool of GCEAL candidates.

Candidates who are currently studying medicine abroad will be considered on an individual basis. Successful candidates will normally be required to start the MBBS programme from Year 1.

Due to the differences between our MBBS and the other medical school curricula, we will not accept transfer students to clinical years (Year 4 – 6).

If you undertake the intercalated Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) during your Enrichment Year, you can apply to transfer your candidature to the MBBS/PhD programme no later than the 8th month of the MRes[Med]. The time you spent on MRes[Med] would be counted towards the probationary period for your PhD study. After submitting your thesis in the last year of PhD study, you would then re-enter the MBBS programme in Year 4 and complete the remaining years up to Year 6. In a nutshell, this pathway involves two years of MBBS, one year of MRes[Med], three years of PhD, and three more years of MBBS, enabling you to earn the two degrees in nine years.

Another pathway is to complete four years of MBBS, followed by three or four years of PhD, then the final two years of MBBS. To be qualified for this route, you would need to have: 1) good results in the MBBS I-IV Summative Examinations and 2) a Bachelor’s degree with 1st class honours or a Bachelor’s degree with honours, plus a taught Master’s degree (e.g. MSc) prior to admission to MBBS for 4-year PhD; or a research Master’s degree (MPhil) awarded prior to admission to MBBS for 3-year PhD. After submitting your PhD thesis, you would re-enter the MBBS programme and complete Years 5 and 6. The entire study period for the two degrees would be nine or ten years.

Completion of this basic training will open the door to a multitude of career options in the medical profession. ‍ If you want to become a specialist, you are then required to undergo more years of postgraduate training and further examinations. Postgraduate and specialist training is administered through the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and its constituent colleges. ‍ HKUMed graduates are a heterogeneous group of doctors, many of whom are now in leading positions in a variety of fields, not just medicine. Considering that the human face enjoys utmost exposure, as compared to other parts of the body, my choice to become a dentist was a natural outcome of my instinct. I was 15 when I read ‘The Smile Stealers’. It was then that the history of dentistry appealed to my intellect. Nurturing this innocent interest with care, here I stand today, ready to embrace a dynamic career in dentistry. A person’s appearance and image largely rest on the way he/she talks, smiles and presents incidents. Given that a significant section of people across the globe experience difficulties due to injury in their oral region, a logical choice for me would be to put on the mask of a dentist.</p><p>In an effort to gain a better insight into the area of my interest, I capitalized on my last summer internship. Integrating myself into several dentistry settings, I gained first-hand knowledge for four weeks. Thoroughly enjoying the fresh knowledge-acquisition process, I worked on orthodontics and implants. Most importantly, I realized that dentists need to go beyond their core skills while establishing a compassionate association with their patients. Besides, I talked to experienced dentists to learn how frustrating and stressful certain patients and cases can be. All these experiences strengthened my desire to be a part of the dentistry world and take care of patients who are suffering.</p><p>Besides, I enhanced my foundational knowledge in dentistry, undertaking a job at a local clinic in Mumbai, India. This was an invaluable learning experience for me. During this phase, I came to realize the value that soft and hard skills in dentistry hold for the professionals. In particular, I carried out dental drills, which helped me gain manual dexterity. Apart from this, I was fascinated with the processes like laser frenectomy and other procedures that dentists carried out on the gums. This mechanism enabled the patient to gain normal movement of the lower lip, which previously got strained from the gum. This was the first time I saw how a CO2 laser works practically. I realized the depth of dentistry, as the professional used a specific dye and killed the bacteria around the oral region. Most importantly, the patient enjoyed a joyous experience, and I look forward to bestowing such gratifying feelings to my patients in the coming years.</p><p>I also noticed how the dentists developed a rapport with the patients at the outset, so that they felt at ease. It was interesting for me to study the different social elements in the life of each patient. However, the end goal of the dentists was to establish the rapport. Eventually, I realized that communication and interpersonal skills hold the secret for success for reputed dentists.</p><p>Apart from being consistent in my academics, I have demonstrated my competence in trekking, playing saxophone and flute. In the summer of 2016, I embarked on an expedition to Nepal, climbing the highest peak in the world. During this expedition, I combated both mental and physical challenges. My energetic character keeps me active. In several programs and assemblies, I have played the flute and the saxophone. I also love interacting with people, as it enhances my confidence and communication skills. Rather than playing solo, I prefer playing these instruments in small orchestras. This is where every musician works together, complementing each other’s efforts. The cohesive efforts result in a mellifluous symphony, the secret of which lies in teamwork.</p><p>I have been a fervent learner all these years and would like to be a part of the sophisticated academic environment at your institute. Aligning my passion and professional goals, I hereby commit myself to the dentistry profession. A berth in your revered institution would propel me closer to my professional goals. I look forward to integrating myself into the progressive student community at your university.</p><p>Click the below button to download your copy of HKU personal statement sample PDF. Try to avoid them in your writing.

Lack of engagement:

The write-up contains only statements.

Not genuine:

The writer has included fabricated info to impress the committee.

Plagiarism:

The document is a copy of another Hong Kong university personal statement sample.
