Whether you’re preparing for a new school year or are already in the thick of one, there is no better time than now to recommit to classroom organization with the help of Microsoft Teams. Assignments in Teams has just what the educator ordered—simplified ways to streamline, distribute, manage, and access assignments for classes this year and beyond.

Here are some of the latest and greatest features Assignments has to offer:

1. Filter assignments by class

Sometimes keeping track of assignments can almost feel like a greater task than reviewing them. Educators can now rest easy and stay organized by filtering student assignments by the classes they teach for a convenient and visual list view.

2. Return an assignment for student revision

Assignments are sometimes a work in progress, requiring ongoing updates, reviews, and edits. After reviewing an assignment, educators can now  return the assignment for revision . The returned assignment will appear in the student’s “active work” list, where they can then turn the work in after making edits. To return an assignment, educators just need to select Return for revision .

3. Assign group work

Collaborative learning just got easier with the new group assignment feature. Educators can give projects to a team of students and have them collaborate on, and submit, one piece of work for their whole group. Once the assignment has been submitted, educators can choose to submit comments and grades to individual students, or the entire group.

4. Manage assignments on a mobile device

Learning can happen from anywhere, and many educators and students rely on a mobile device to check and work on assignments. For their convenience, an upgraded version of Assignments with simplified navigation is now available on Android and iOS mobile devices and tablet devices.

  • Use task management tools: Microsoft Teams offers features to assign tasks, set deadlines and track progress.
  • Prioritize tasks: Assign priorities to tasks to understand what needs to be done first. This ensures important tasks are not overlooked.
  • Set clear deadlines: Define deadlines to prevent delays and procrastination. Deadlines motivate and maintain productivity.
  • Communicate regularly: Effective communication is key. Check in with team members to provide guidance, address questions or concerns and ensure they have resources.
  • Monitor progress: Review updates from team members regularly to identify potential issues and take action.
  • Provide support: If a team member is struggling with their task, provide resources or guidance to help.

Tracking and monitoring tasks is more than ticking boxes. It needs active involvement, collaboration and adaptability throughout the project.

Pro Tip: Encourage communication by regularly meeting or using collaborative platforms. Share progress updates, discuss roadblocks and seek help. This will create a supportive work environment and help everyone achieve goals.

Best Practices for Effective Task Assignment in Microsoft Teams

To ensure effective task assignment in Microsoft Teams, master the best practices. Communicate clear expectations, set deadlines and reminders, and provide feedback and recognition. These strategies will streamline collaboration, boost productivity, and foster a sense of accountability among team members. Get ready to optimize task management in Microsoft Teams with these essential techniques.

Communicating Clear Expectations

Successful task assignment in Microsoft Teams needs effective communication. Clear expectations guarantee a good workflow with successful project completion. To communicate clear expectations, do the following:

  • Define the task: State the desired outcome, objectives, and related deadlines.
  • Supply precise instructions: Split the task into smaller parts and provide specific instructions for each one.
  • Set performance standards: Explain the quality of work needed and any metrics that should be met.
  • Motivate questions and comments: Generate an atmosphere where team members feel comfortable asking questions and seeking clarity.

By communicating clear expectations well, you can stop confusion, improve efficiency, and boost collaboration between team members. This helps everyone stay on the same page and work towards a shared goal.

Besides these key points, it is important to have regular check-ins with team members to monitor progress, tackle any issues or obstacles, and give ongoing support. This helps maintain responsibility and keeps everyone focused on meeting expectations.

Remember that effective communication is a two-way street. Stimulate open conversation and active listening to guarantee that both sides completely understand each other’s expectations.

A study done by Harvard Business Review in 2019 showed that teams with clearly defined goals are 3.6 times more likely to reach those goals compared to teams with unclear or fuzzy goals. Consequently, communicating clear expectations is important for succeeding in Microsoft Teams tasks.

By following these best practices for effective task assignment in Microsoft Teams , you can better collaboration, simplify workflows, and raise overall productivity with your team.

Setting Deadlines and Reminders

Staying on track with tasks? Follow these 4 steps !

  • Rank them in order of urgency and importance.
  • Set realistic deadlines and leave time for completion.
  • Remind yourself and teammates of deadlines.
  • Review and adjust as needed.

Let’s look into some special details!

Communicate deadlines clearly with your team. Utilize Microsoft Teams to assign deadlines and get notifications when they’re close.

Recently, our team used these strategies to meet a strict client deadline. We prioritized, set realistic timelines, and used reminders. Our high-quality results were ready ahead of schedule!

Providing Feedback and Recognition

Feedback and recognition are essential for a productive work environment. Showing appreciation for team members not only raises morale, but also encourages them to strive for better results. Here are 6 key points to achieve this:

  • Constructive Criticism – Give advice aimed at improving performance, based on actions, not character.
  • Timely Recognition – Praise efforts quickly to nurture good behavior and growth.
  • Balanced Approach – Make sure feedback and recognition are kept in balance.
  • Clear Communication – Express expectations, goals, and improvement needs with clarity.
  • Individualized Approach – Offer feedback and recognition that suit each team member’s strengths, weaknesses, and interests.
  • Encouraging Environment – Promote open communication and honest feedback.

Moreover, take into account each individual’s context when providing feedback and recognition. Acknowledging their role and linking their goals to team objectives will create a custom experience that encourages motivation.

As an example, a team leader showed appreciation for one member who had been consistently giving their best. This recognition not only boosted the individual’s confidence but also inspired the rest of the team. The act of appreciation spread and resulted in improved productivity from the whole team.

Exploring the journey of assigning tasks in Microsoft Teams has been quite an enlightening experience. We have looked at the various steps and various features that can help with this process. Now, let us draw some conclusions.

Teams also offers real-time updates and notifications. This ensures that everyone is aware of task assignments and deadlines. No more need for constant follow-ups or resource-intensive status meetings. Plus, the ability to integrate third-party apps further improves task management capabilities within Teams .

Teams is great for collaboration and makes it super easy to get students working together on something.

However, it is also great for creating work that students can complete individually.

Using the Assignments features in Teams is easy and is baked into any Classes Teams you’ve created. You can upload documents created in Word, Excel and PowerPoint (if you want students to add their own ideas) and you also add PDFs or Picture files (if you want students to have them as a reference.) The assignments features allows you to set due dates and schedule to assign later (for those of you who have already planned out your entire year.)

Points can be given and rubrics can be attached. The review tool makes it easy to give feedback and get the assignments returned to students.

You can also create assignments from Microsoft Forms and have them automatically graded.

How to Post Assignments to Specific Channels in Teams

Keeping your students organized and on top of their work can get a little chaotic – especially when there is a mix of digital and paper assignments. When working within Microsoft Teams , the General Channel is the default for posting any assignments and updates to students. This leads to a messy Channel if you are posting often. However, we can help you to stay more organized and fix this up – try to post assignments to specific channels instead.

If you have assignments for specific units or groups of students, you can now post these notifications on that specific channel. Unfortunately, Teams doesn’t allow you to do this for private channels, so make sure they are open! If you do have an assignment that is only for a few specific students, you will have to assign the work to them separately. We go through how to post assignments to specific channels and students below. If you are ready to get your Teams organized, start reading!

Assign to a Specific Channel

To start to post assignments to specific channels, go into your Assignments tab in Microsoft Teams and create a new assignment. Fill out all of the assignment details that you want to add. At the bottom of the page, you will notice a line that reads “ Post Assignment Notifications to this Channel: General .” Next to it, click on the Edit button.

create & post assignments to specific channels in teams

You will see the different channel options that you can choose. Choose which channel you will want the assignment notifications to go to, and click done . Then, don’t forget to click Assign to send the assignment to your students. You can go into the channel you chose and see the assignment notification there.

Don’t see all your channels when editing where to post the assignment notifications? Note that you are unable to choose private channels. For a workaround here, you can instead assign work to specific students.

Assign to Specific Students

Many teachers create private channels for students to do group work or to easily separate students and give them different versions of the same assignments. When assigning work, it would be nice to also post the assignment notifications to that channel, but unfortunately, Teams doesn’t allow you to do this in private channels. Instead, we will have to manually choose and assign the work to these groups of students.

To begin, we will create a new assignment from the Assignments tab in your Team. Once all the details are added in, you can choose which Team and which students to assign this to. Instead of choosing All Students , you can pick and choose which students will receive this assignment. You can go through your class list and choose the students. You will notice that you are not able to edit where the notifications are posted after you have done this.

Once the work has been assigned, students will receive a notification on their end that they must complete the work. Unfortunately, they won’t receive a notification in any of their channels, but they will know they still must do the assignment.

select specific students to post assignments in teams

There are many different ways to use Teams and make it easier for you and your students to stay on top of their work. Hopefully, to post assignments to specific channels and to specific students are 2 ways that you can implement them in your routine. For other Teams Tips & Tricks, check out the articles below:

Setting assignments/homework in Microsoft Teams

1. using the share button.

Sharing content, tests and lessons is very quick with Focus on Sound but . . . . .

Please note that the Share button only shares the content, lesson or test link. It doesn't send marks back to Teams . It can also only create an assignment for a single class . Test results are still saved in Focus on Sound results though.

Students need to press the 'Hand in' button in Teams when they have finished the work

To choose multiple classes and/or send marks back you need synced custom lessons - our preferred system - See section 2 below.

For every page in Focus on Sound that can be set as an assignment you'll see one of these 'Share' buttons at the top right of your screen.

MSShare

That takes you to the screen below. If it doesn't, check you have the correct Microsoft Teams account. You might need to change accounts if it defaults to your personal account.

Make sure you select 'Create an assignment'

You then choose the class (see below). You can then set title, dates, etc.

TeamsAssignment

Note: The Teams software lists any classes assigned to you in the school - not just the classes you have assigned to Focus on Sound. The list is not something we can control. If you have more classes than it can display on the page Teams may show an arbitrary list which may or may not include the classes you expect.

If the class you need doesn't appear, you need to go to the class in Microsoft Teams, click on 'assignments' and then click on 'Get started.'

Please note that currently Teams doesn't allow you to choose multiple classes. So, you have two choices:

  • Sharing the content multiple times, once for each class.
  • Using the system below and linking custom lessons to multiple classes in Teams.

2. Using the synced Custom Lesson/Teams feature

If you need results to be sent back to Teams and/or you want to set work for multiple classes, you need to use the new Custom Lesson system.

First, go to Custom Lessons in My School.

The click 'Add new' or edit a previous custom lesson. Notice the new 'Sync with Microsoft Teams' button.

TeamsCustomLessons1

You'll notice a date assigner now appears. This is a requirement for Teams. You can adjust the dates later in Teams itself.

Caution - when you click Publish, the assignment is set up for the class(es) you have chosen. Unticking a class will destroy the link with that class - so don't use this system as a template for other lessons with other classes. Also, changing the name of an existing custom lesson can cause problems with the result saving system . We will soon have checks in place to stop you doing any of these actions.

Once you have set up the assignments, you will probably want to go into your Teams application to check them all and adjust dates as necessary.

When you have finished setting the lesson you'll see a new Preview Lesson button. Use that to check through everything before you publish.

Publish-Preview-GC-Teams

When you publish the lesson it will be set up as an assignment for the classes you have specified.

3. Editing the assignment in Teams

You may want to edit individual class assignments, so that each class has its own start and end date. You can also specify the exact time it's posted and due.

EditTeamsAssignment

Figure 1 above shows where you click Edit to allow late-joiners to the class to do the work.

Figure 2 shows where you can specify the exact time of posting, by clicking the Edit button. The default start date is one day ahead. As long as you set the time to be later than the current time, you can schedule the start time to be the same day.

It's important not to untick the box in the screenshot below. All assignments are in the future, even if it starts in 5 minutes time. Unticking the box moves your assignment to draft and will result in the results link being lost.

TeamsScheduling

4. Sending results back to Teams

Unfortunately, neither Microsoft nor Google allow students to send their own results. It has to be the teacher that presses the button.

The way we do this is to have a 'Save to Teams' button in the Focus on Sound class results system.

SaveToTeamsButton

First, you need to find the actual test or lesson you have set as an assignment.

You'd need to wait until most or all the students have done the lesson before clicking that button.

If any students' results are still shown as 'Missing' in Teams, although marks are shown in Focus on Sound results, the student has probably not pressed the End lesson button. The students involved then need to press the Hand in button in the GC assignment. Then you can click the Save to Teams button again. The final marks should now appear.

Confused about the pages seen figure in FoS lesson results? Go here .

2024 Kentucky Derby horses, field, odds, post positions: Fierceness, Sierra Leone early favorites for big race

The first triple crown race of the year is nearly here and we now know the post positions for the kentucky derby.

Kentucky Derby Previews

The Kentucky Derby is almost here. The 150th Run for the Roses is set for Saturday afternoon from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, where 20 horses will be vying for this year's crown. The mint juleps will be flowing all day as fans make the annual pilgrimage to the famed racetrack to take in the fastest two minutes in sports. The post draw was held very early this year, a full week before the race takes place.

The favorite this year is Fierceness, who will start out of the No. 16 gate. The horse, trained by Todd Pletcher, has three wins in five career starts. Fierceness took home the win at the Florida Derby in March to go with a win at the Breeders Cup in November.

As is always the case, the favorite will have some stiff competition from the rest of the field at Churchill Downs. Sierra Leone (3-1), Catching Freedom (8-1), Forever Young (10-1), and Just a Touch (10-1) round out the rest of the favorites in this year's Kentucky Derby field. Dornoch, the younger brother of 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage, is something of a longshot at 20-1.

The most common post position to take home the roses has been the No. 5 gate with 10. The last win from that starting gate came in 2017 with Always Dreaming. The position drew a fairly big longshot this year with Catalytic, who is around 30-1 to win it all. He has just three races on his resumes and two second-place finishes.

Last year, the morning-line favorite, Forte, was scratched the morning of the race. The massive shakeup atop the field led to one of the more interesting races in recent memory with no clear favorite. Mage, at 15-1, managed to hold off Angel Empire and Two Phil's for a massive win for jockey Javier Castellano, who picked up his first victories in the Run for the Roses and the Belmont Stakes last year.

The winner of the 150th edition of the Kentucky Derby will look to join the 13 Triple Crown winners in history. The last came in 2018 with Justify as the horse easily swept all three legs of the Triple Crown at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Check out the list of previous 149 winners before the action kicks off on May 4.

Baltimore Orioles Outfielder Set to Begin Injury Rehab Assignment

Matthew postins | may 7, 2024.

Mar 2, 2024; Sarasota, Florida, USA; Baltimore Orioles left fielder Austin Hays.

  • Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Monday that outfielder Austin Hays would begin an injury rehab assignment on Tuesday when minor league action resumes across the country.

The Orioles will assign Hays to Double-A Bowie to start the assignment. The Baysox are home this week against Akron.

Hays has been on the 10-day injured list since last month with a left calf injury he suffered on April 20.

Hays has been with Bowie for the past few days, working out with the Baysox after the Orioles left Baltimore to take on Cincinnati last weekend. While with the Orioles last week he took batting practice and ran the bases.

Hays was having trouble at the plate before he suffered the injury. Coming off an All-Star season, he started 2024 with a .111 batting average and a .311 OPS. He had just five hits in 45 at-bats.

Hays beat Baltimore at the arbitration table in the offseason, winning a $6.3 million salary for 2024 in his second year of arbitration eligibility. Hays slashed .275/.325/.444/.769 with 16 home runs and 67 RBI.

That has allowed Colton Cowser to rise up and build a critical role in the season’s first six weeks. The 24-year-old slashed .276/.354/.575/.929 with six home runs and 19 RBI in his first 32 games of the season.

That’s a big improvement over his debut last season, during which Cowser slashed .115/.286/.148/.434 in 26 games.

Cowser and another top prospect, Heston Kjerstad, are on the 26-man roster, along with Ryan McKenna, Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander.

Former All-Star who felt blindsided by Red Sox DFA’d by new team

Matt Barnes was looking to show he still had it. However, his time with the Washington Nationals has come to an end after 14 games this season.

The Nationals announced Tuesda y that they have designated the 34-year-old former Boston Red Sox reliever for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster.

Barnes had signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals earlier this year. He posted a 6.75 ERA in 14 appearances this season.

Barnes spent nine seasons with the Boston Red Sox, first appearing in 2014. He was a part of the team’s 2018 World Series team and eventually took on the closer role in 2021, earning his lone career All-Star nod that year.

However, Barnes’ effectiveness tailed off during the end of his run in Boston, with injuries playing a significant factor.

The Red Sox opted to DFA and eventually trade Barnes ahead of the 2023 season. Barnes said he was stunned by the move, saying at the time that it “was a complete blindside.”

how to set assignments on teams

There was a popular belief that Barnes may have been a victim of being “run into the ground” by the Red Sox, with Barnes retweeting a social media post suggesting that was the case.

Barnes never used those words, but did reference that he had shouldered a heavy workload out of the bullpen in 2021 and 2022.

Heading into 2023, Barnes was traded to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Richard Bleier, who himself was DFA’d months later. However, Barnes’ 2023 season was cut short after undergoing surgery for a hip impingement.

Working his way back from shoulder and hip issues, Barnes’ arrival in Washington was billed as a comeback of sorts as the veteran worked to prove he still had it.

“First and foremost, (I want to show) that I’m healthy and feeling good,” Barnes said in February, via MLB.com . “I feel like I’ve got things to still offer this game and offer this organization and team, and that I’m back to being who I was.”

As a result of the DFA decision, the Nationals have five days to try and trade Barnes before he is released outright.
