You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment .

Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

Travel industry has experienced a major boom in the later part of the 20th century and has been a blessing in disguise, which has helped some weaker nations to uplift their failing economies. While questions have been raised regarding the negative impacts that accompany the growth in the travel sector, these definitely do not outweigh the associated benefits.

The economic boost that accompanies a successful travel industry is quite well recognised and Thailand is the best example. The entire Thai economy revolves around tourism and the country had been able to uplift its socio economic status through its flourishing hospitality sector. Egypt is another nation that is heavily dependent on its hospitality sector. The growth in the number of incoming tourists leads to innumerable prospects in terms of local entrepreneurship & employment generation. This is also associated with international investments and infrastructure development. The national authorities, in order to ensure safety of the international visitors provide better law and order enforcement, improved transportation and healthcare facilities, which in turn benefit the local population.

On the other hand, the rising influx of holidaymakers is associated with increased incidences of crimes, prostitution and antisocial activities like drugs, human trafficking and gambling, which affect the values of the indigenous society. The local population are also affected by the growth in property value indices. Environmentalists are also concerned regarding environmental remodelling, that is associated with increased tourist activities in natural reserves. In this context, it is worth mentioning that, by enforcing stern law and order and implementing strict legislations, governments can control most of these negative impacts of tourism .

Henceforth, it can be confidently conveyed that, even though the growth in travel industry has accompanying negative social impacts, these do not outweigh the contributions made by this sector towards social development.

Model Answer (Band 8):

There is no doubt that international tourists have brought a lot of positive impact to many countries. However, these benefits also come with many negative issues. Personally, I feel that international tourism has resulted more advantages than disadvantages to the affected nations in general. In this essay, I will examine both the benefits and their related cost and support my opinion accordingly.

First of all, many people argue that many local inhabitants have been sacrificed in order to make way for the development of tourist attractions. For examples, tress were cut down so that hotels can be constructed; old heritage sites were demolished and replaced by new shopping malls; local residence, especially the aboriginals, have to be relocated so that their land can be used for new airport. However, people tend to ignore the economics and social benefits brought upon by these developments. For example, the number of jobs created by the constructions of hotels and shopping malls could stimulate the economic growth of a nation and benefit the both the people and the nation as a whole.

Secondly, many people also claimed that the influx of foreign tourists will increase the social problems such as crime rates immoral activities. For examples, they claimed that tourists usually like to visit pubs and clubs in the evening and that will lead to higher rate of alcohol related problems such as noise pollution , vandalism and prostitution. However, I believe that the millions of foreign dollars brought in by these tourists could actually decrease the problems if the money are put into proper used by the government. For example, the tax collected from the entertainment outlet could be used to help combat crime and actually make the country a safer place.

In conclusion, I believe that if we look at the overall picture of international tourism when doing the cost-benefit analysis, we will see that they are more advantages than disadvantages.

This would fall under “advantage / disadvantage essay”. You will need to discuss both and then come to a conclusion if one outweighs the other.

For Academic Writing Task1, you can write the overview in your introduction. Alternatively, it is also fine to write the overview at the end.

If you write the overview in the intro, then start with the phrase “Overall, …” ; when you write it at the end start with “In summary, ….”

Finally, if you have written the overview in the intro then do not repeat it again in the summary, and vice versa.

It seems to be that there were grammatical errors in the essay. Specifically –

Drugs are not antisocial? The ‘usage’ of illegal substances/drugs are; Prostitution is not a crime unless legalized and the sentence does not indicate if you consider it a crime? Human trafficking is definitely a crime and again your sentence does not indicate if you consider it a criminal behaviour? Infact your sentence indicates that you consider human trafficking to be antisocial (and not a crime)? Same for gambling.

I would have said:

“…..increased incidences of criminal behaviour, such as prostitution and human trafficking, and antisocial activities, such as gambling and the use of illegal drugs….”

There is no restriction on using idioms and phrases in essays. IELTS essays are not like the academic essays that you write in university level courses.

It is fine to use an idiom or phrase if the context is appropriate. However, don’t overdo it by using too many idioms.

Band 8.5 Sample Essay 1

There are several reasons why many people have a negative attitude towards international tourism. However, this can be handled by adopting possible solutions, as will now be discussed.

Firstly, the influx of foreign travellers is often associated with an increase in environmental pollution. Many tourists throw rubbish into the surroundings irresponsibly, which contributes to air, water, and soil contamination. Furthermore, there might be a growing demand for transport, decreasing the air quality at the tourist destination.

Secondly, international tourism increases the odds of spreading infectious diseases to the local community. Viruses such as Ebola and H5N1 can become a threat to the locals if an infected traveller visits their country. In Vietnam, for example, many people died after a visitor from Hong Kong carried the H5N1 virus to the country in 2003. This example makes it clear why many people are still against the development of international tourism.

However, there is a range of options that can be taken to improve the situation. One measure would be that the government should continue campaigns to raise the awareness of tourists when they pay a visit to a new land. Travellers should be encouraged to put waste into the right place or to use public transport if possible. Another remedy is that there should be medical checks at airports and borders. This is to guarantee that infected visitors should be quarantined to halt the spread of the disease.

In conclusion, negative feelings about global tourism still are common in society. However, this can be resolved by taking the above suggestions.

To halt something: to stop; to make somebody/something stop ==>We are failing to halt the destruction of the rainforest.

Band 8.5 Sample Essay 2

Advances made in air travel have shrunk the world. With these, today, people from all walks of life can travel abroad; however, the rise of international tourism is greeted with dismay by many. In this essay, I will present the reasons why some local people harbour unwelcoming attitudes towards foreign tourists and put forward some solutions to this issue.

International tourists are now criticised mainly due to their contribution to environmental degradation. In many countries, many famous tourist destinations are now bearing the scars of vandalism committed by travellers arriving from outside. Other places of interest are also gradually being turned into which are comparable to garbage dumps, despite all attempts to reduce the amount of waste by the local community. In addition to this, many foreigners travel on a shoestring. In order to economise, many are willing to sleep on the streets in their tents, which mars the cityscape.

What local authorities can firstly do to change the behaviours of foreign tourists is through education. While advertising the beauty of an area, the media should also strive to raise the awareness of prospective travellers about protecting it. The other method is to pass stricter regulations regarding littering particularly in popular tourist places. The high effectiveness of fining litterbugs is clearly demonstrated in the example of Singapore, where one can no longer find trash in public places.

To summarise, the inhospitable feeling that the local people have for international tourists can be explained in many ways. I feel that this issue can hardly be solved by a single wave of a magic wand – it takes a great deal of effort from both the locals and the foreigners.

People from all walks of life: people of different backgrounds
To be greeted with dismay: to be unwelcomed
To harbour unwelcoming attitudes towards: To oppose to
To bear the scars of vandalism: to be vandalised.
Travel on a shoestring: Travel with very small amount of money.
To mar the cityscape: make the city look ugly
Litterbug: people who throw rubbish in public places.
Litter (v.) throw rubbish.
The inhospitable feeling: bad feeling
This issue can hardly be solved by a single wave of a magic wand : this issue is not easy to be dealt with.

As air travel becomes safer and cheaper, it is expected that tourism, as a sector, will grow significantly. Thus, it is worthwhile to discuss the possible untoward effects of international tourism and suggest possible solutions to address them.

As people from move one place to another, it is inevitable that they may also bring something along with them. While clothes and bags have no consequences, it is a different story if people try to bring animals, plants and the most dreadful of all, diseases as they travel. For example, invasive species such as Manila clams have been accidentally brought back by American ships from the Philippines during the Second World War and led to the destruction of the native biodiversity due to the spectacular ability of these mollusks to reproduce. High rates of international travel also allow for rapid spread of diseases, creating pandemics. While it may seem harmless, international tourism may lead to serious consequences if not regulated.

Solutions to the aforementioned problems are already being implemented by countries across the world. Regulatory bodies now have very strict protocols regarding shipping of animals, pets, or plants to another country. Nations currently also react very quickly to contagious diseases through lock downs and airport closures. However, there are still people who cannot help but worry about these problems. To address this, governments can initiate projects that spread awareness and should assure their countrymen that they are doing their best to protect their best interests.

To conclude, international tourism has its drawbacks but countermeasures are already in place to keep them in check. In order to change people’s mind about this, governments have the responsibility to keep their constituents properly informed and give them reassurance regarding the matter.

Tourism industry is the backbone of a nation as it contributes a significant amount towards the country’s economy.There is difference in the perspective among individuals regarding international tourism. This essay will outline its possible causes and potential solutions in the forthcoming paragraphs. Firstly,the reluctance of native peoples towards the foreigners is mainly due to recent developments in the illegal trading activities.Nowadays,international travellers are opted as a mode for exchange of drugs and other valuable commodities,this eventually poses threat to the society and economy of the nation.For instance, the recent gold smuggling by the foreign diplomats to Kerala,India had widespread attention in media both nationally and internationally.Secondly,travelling internationally poses high risk for transmission of communicable diseases which can later result in pandemic like situations.For example,the breakout of corona virus in 2020 to a pandemic was majorly due to the continuing international travel. The possible solutions for above mentioned causes is to initiate high level customs check in all the ports where visitors attempt to enter meaning in the airports,harbours etc.Moreover,the spread of communicable diseases can also be controlled in a large extend by implementing effective screening techniques,unlike having the tests only procured during the times of pandemics,a general screening is advisable to rule out any traces at the earliest. In conclusion,though the non-native tourists are not welcomed by the local population due to various threats they poses to the society by illicit trading and Spread of life threatening diseases ,theses problems however can be sorted out by initiating appropriate checks at the port of entry.

Pay attention to spellings and learn error free sentence formation

There is a lack of paragraph division. Since this is a cause-and-solution essay, you have to discuss all the causes in one body paragraph and all the solutions in the other. Do not combine them or miss any of them.

Follow the conventions. Only the first letter of the word in a sentence and proper nouns must be in capitals and there should be proper space between words.

Use C2 level words.

Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their country. And that is because of various reasons but mostly for the reason that when tourists visit a country they show defiance towards that nation’s customs and traditions and promote their own western cultures which have bad effects on the mindset of that nation’s population. In this essay, I will discuss the perspectives of people as to why they consider foreign travel a bad thing and also the solution that can change their views. To begin with, there are reasons that caused many folks to consider globe travel as a bad thing for their country. Firstly, travellers promoting their western customs and causing folks of that state to follow those cultures. Resulting in, their own heritages disappearing in the process. Secondly, these globetrotters act defiant towards rules and regulations in entering a sacrilegious place. For instance, while entering a holy place one needs to take off shoes, cover their heads and body properly but these backpackers do not seem to care about those rules. And lastly, they cause pollution by throwing plastic bottles and bags everywhere. On the contrary, foreign travellers are important for a nation as it provides us with an opportunity to learn about the western customs and broaden our horizons. Therefore, the perspective needs to change and that can be done with some aid from the government. For example, the government can issue laws like while going inside a sacred place everyone needs to follow rules and whoever would not pay a heavy fine. Consequently, fines for causing pollution and placing more trash cans around the city. To conclude, like the two sides of a coin there are both advantages and disadvantages to a certain thing. To enjoy the benefits we must find ways to change the downfalls into advantages. As mentioned earlier in the essay, foreign globetrotters are important for the bright opportunities that come along with them so to utilize that the public’s perspectives need to transform with the aid of the highlighted solutions in the previous paragraph.

It is quite common that most of the citizens of certain countries consider international tourism to have more adverse impacts than the positive footprints to their country. This negative impression on the international tourism among the natives could be resolved easily. This essay will discuss in detail about the common causes that have created such a bad vibration about the foreigners visit and their possible solutions.

To begin with, the local community always have a fear that the visitors may influence their culture over the native’s which might demolish their own and end up losing their authenticity. Another significant danger would be the possibilities of smuggling goods or drugs from or to their country. Some tourists have the tendency to make racial abuse and share humiliating comments on the country that they visited on social media which may infuriate the locals. Among all these factors the most important concern would be the risk of spreading communicable diseases to the domestic groups from the visitors. The best example would be the recent pandemic which swiftly passed on to the whole world from the origin nation through international travel.

But there are plethora of solutions to resolve this discomfort among the local citizens. The Government could enact strict laws and boundaries to the tourists to prevent any cultural infringements during their visit. Customs department should be proactive and have necessary technical detectors in seizing the smuggled items or drugs. Any racial abuse or commenting on the nation’s stature should be punished severely which would create a sense of vigilance among the tourists. Most importantly, Government must equip themselves in identifying potentially ill patients at the arrival itself to prevent the spread any infectious disease.

Hence to conclude, though the most countries believe that international tourism has harmful effects, it could be solved easily by enforcing multiple efficient solutions.

Question: Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) The unbridled popularity of international Tourism has left some people wondering whether this trend has created tension rather than understanding. I disagree, as although catering to foreign tourists can cause some frustration, this is outweighed by the opportunity for mutual appreciation.

(Body 1) Some suggest that large numbers of overseas visitors can dilute the native culture and annoy local residents. Firstly, businesses such as restaurants or tour companies often cater to the needs of foreign tourists by offering them a watered down version of local cuisine, or whistle-stop tours of historically important landmarks. This may not only anger the indigenous population, but also rob visitors of authentic experiences. Furthermore, a significant number of tourists are looking to let off steam, enjoying themselves noisily until the early hours, often with the help of cheap alcohol. Ultimately this may cause a disturbance to locals, and create an unwanted distraction for police.

(Body 2) Despite these issues, I believe travelling to other countries is the best way to gain a deep understanding. Of course there are a myriad of ways to learn, from national geographic to youtube vlogs. But this cannot compare to the direct personal experience which is gained from visiting yourself. Not only do you have countless chances to ‘break bread’ with locals and experience the culture firsthand, but most likely you will have researched beforehand, and got familiar with the local lingo and customs. This inevitably can remove deeply-rooted stereotypes. For example, before visiting Vietnam, many Americans view the country only in terms of the war between its nations, and are pleasantly surprised to learn about Vietnam’s diverse culture and welcoming people.

(Conclusion) To sum up, the potential risk of rising tensions cannot compare to the level of cultural awareness that comes from firsthand, personal experience. Personally, I look forward to the day when affordable low-carbon transport methods can allow everyone to enjoy international travel without a catastrophic impact on the environment. (316 words).

The advent of mass tourism has been enabled by the growth of the aviation industry, which has made it easier and cheaper to fly to holiday destinations around the world. The growth of tourism has created hundreds of millions of jobs and is a multi-billion dollar industry which supports businesses and even whole national economies. However, there are also significant environmental impacts that must be prioritised.

Tourism has a major economic impact, especially on countries which have become major destinations for holidaymakers. Firstly, this supports large sectors in the economies of many developing nations. In parts of the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, the service sector benefits the most. Large resorts have been developed to accommodate travellers, local restaurants experience a booming trade in peak seasons, and the manufacture of local arts and crafts provides livelihoods to millions. In addition, the tax revenue from tourists can be reinvested into education and public services, further improving living standards in these places. These arguments show that there are many advantages of global tourism.

Despite these benefits, tourism has irreparable environmental consequences, and these are more important than short-term economic gains. The development of tourist resorts destroys a great deal of pristine wilderness as areas are cleared to make way for hotels. This threatens vulnerable ecosystems and could drive a loss of biodiversity. Even more importantly, the increasing numbers of international flights emit millions of tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year, increasing the rate of climate change and consequent storms and sea level rises. Ironically, the very countries which benefit most from tourism are also most at risk, as coastal areas popular with tourists flood more frequently and many people are killed in devastating tropical storms.

In conclusion, tourism supports jobs and businesses in developing countries and has thrown a lifeline to millions who would otherwise live in poverty. However, this is outweighed by its serious environmental consequences, including ecological damage and carbon emissions from aviation. These impacts are also worse in countries which benefit most from tourism, and thus international tourism is a negative trend overall.

Millions of people travel abroad from wealthy, developed nations to other countries every year. These tourists provide an important income stream to businesses in tourist destinations. They support hotels which provide accommodation, restaurants which cater to their appetites and cultural facilities such as museums, which satisfy their curiosity about local culture and history. This in turn creates countless jobs for local residents, improving their standard of living. As more money is spent in tourist destinations, host countries become more developed, improving their infrastructure and education. These benefits enjoyed by local citizens mean that tourism has many positive economic impacts on countries around the world.

Despite these advantages, tourism can be detrimental to the environment and culture in host countries. Environmentally, some areas may become overdeveloped, which harms local wildlife and ecosystems. While this unavoidable effect of tourism is unfortunate, the areas affected are actually quite small. To offset this problem, governments can use the money generated from holidaymakers to create nature reserves, which better protects their country’s natural environment. Culturally, local lifestyles and customs may be diluted by the arrival of large multinational hotel and restaurant chains. This means that it is important to impose planning regulations to govern the way that resorts develop and ensure local ways of life are preserved. These examples show that managing the problems associated with tourism can mitigate its negative effects.

In conclusion, tourism provides invaluable economic benefits to countries around the world and improves development and living standards, which is especially important in developing nations. There are some drawbacks, such as environmental and cultural effects, but they are relatively minor and can be sensibly managed. As a result, international tourism has been and will continue to be a very positive development.

Hotels and restaurants provide services to holidaymakers, and travel and tour operators support companies providing leisure activities and cultural experience. This creates jobs and provides wealth to people involved in the tourism sector. However, alongside this prosperity, tourists increase the costs of food and services by adding to existing demand. This can price the majority of local residents out of many of the services in the areas where they live. Consequently, the standard of living for many people does not actually improve, with only the wealthiest citizens benefitting from increased tourism.

In addition to rising living costs, major tourist resorts have a negative effect on the quality of life for local people. The influx of tourists coming from abroad can make resort towns overcrowded and noisy, which is bad for local residents. This also results in an increase in waste which can put strain on local waste management services, leading to the build up of litter, landfill and other forms of environmental pollution. These costs are borne by the permanent residents of an area, whose towns and countryside are often ruined by the growth of the tourist industry.

In conclusion, there are some advantages to international tourism. It can create jobs for locals, bringing increased wealth in a range of industries. However, price inflation means that these benefits are usually only enjoyed by a minority of people and are accompanied by serious reductions in the quality of life for most local residents. As a result, I believe that the drawbacks of global tourism outweigh the advantages due to the fact that it harms more people than it benefits.

Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their countries. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to change this negative attitude towards international tourism?

Many individuals think that foreign tourism brings negative effects to their countries. There are several reasons for such negative attitude towards international travelers. However, a couple of solutions could be adopted to handle this situation, as will now be discussed.

International tourists are often criticized for their contribution to the environmental degradation. It has continuously been noticed that they throw rubbish in their surroundings irresponsibly, which increases the amount of litter everywhere, despite all attempts to reduce waste produced by the local community. This contributes to water, air and soil contamination.

Furthermore, foreign tourism has a harmful influence on traditional customs and indigenous practices of host countries because many tourists are careless and insensitive the emotions and feelings of local residents. For instance, in India, some foreign travelers wear inappropriate clothes or expose too much of skin when they visit sacred places, which leads to some negative attitude and the local public.

However, this situation can be improved different solutions which could be handled by the government. The government should explain the benefits of international tourism which contributes to the development of local . They not only spend money in shops and restaurants but also create jobs in service industries, and this aspect could be publicized. Additionally, the government should increase the awareness among the foreigners through different media such as roadside billboards and advertisements, and tourists should be encouraged to get rid of rubbish correctly.

In conclusion, the inhospitable feeling that the local people have for international tourists can be explained in many ways. However, in my opinion, the government’s involvement is essential to change the negative attitude by citing various advantages of international tourism to their country and raising awareness among tourists in order to protect local habitats.

This essay covers the entire task topic by exploring both reasons for negative attitude towards international tourism and some possible actions to change it. The writer explains why locals may resent international tourists and suggests what steps can be taken to transform the way people feel about foreigners in their country. The information is well-organised by the use of paragraphing, and the writer moves from one idea to the next effortlessly, with the help of linking words. A wide range of vocabulary is used, including less common words such as “degradation”,”inhospitable”, “habitat”, “awareness” and “sacred”. Economically, the influx of tourists provides substantial revenue that can transform local economies. Tourists not only contribute directly through spending on accommodation, dining, and attractions but also indirectly support local employment and infrastructure development. For example, regions like Bali have thrived economically, turning traditional crafts into profitable markets and creating thousands of jobs in hospitality. Such economic injections can lead to improved local facilities and a higher standard of living; however, this influx of capital and tourists also has a downside. The presence of tourists can disrupt local communities, often leading to inflated prices and a cost of living increase that burdens the native population. In cities like Venice and Barcelona, residents have voiced concerns over tourists crowding out locals and escalating living costs, diminishing the quality of life for the permanent inhabitants.

While the economic gains from international tourism can be substantial, it is imperative to consider the environmental costs that accompany this growth. The carbon footprint associated with international flights is considerable, contributing significantly to global warming and climate change. Moreover, overtourism leads to environmental degradation, as seen in the coral reefs of Thailand, which have suffered extensive damage due to increased human activity and pollution. This has resulted in the loss of marine biodiversity and compromised ecosystem health, compelling the Thai government to close several marine parks temporarily to mitigate this impact.

In conclusion, while international tourism does contribute positively to economic development and cultural appreciation, the social and environmental costs it imposes often outweigh these advantages. Given the increased expenses borne by local communities and the irreversible damage to the environment, it is evident that the disadvantages of international tourism surpass its benefits.

Nowadays, as there is a growing number of international tourists, international tourism has been a controversy topic due to its advantages and disadvantages. I firmly believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

One of the most significant advantages of international tourism is economic benefits. As international tourists explore cultures in foreign countries, they spend a large amount of money on their flights, hotels, meals and souvenirs. This allows countries to gain further income, which can be used to improve the lives of local inhabitants by increasing the quality of the social welfare system, implementing new medical equipment and financially supporting poor families. Therefore, international tourism benefits both travellers and local residents by allowing them to explore cultures and improve the quality of their lives, respectively.

However, the disadvantages of international tourism should not be overlooked because negative impacts on local inhabitants are prominent. For instance, in Japan, international tourists could not comprehend the poster written in Japanese, disobeying the indicated rule of not eating while walking on the streets and leaving rubbish on the ground. Subsequently, the local council needed to create additional posters in different languages to prevent further rubbish from being disposed incorrectly. Moreover, airplanes release a massive amount of greenhouse gasses that result in higher temperatures globally. Due to this environmental impact, many countries are experiencing unprecedentedly high temperatures every year, experiencing increased and more devastating natural disasters. Considering both the financial implications of these disadvantages, including wages paid to the council members and economic loss due to natural disasters, that possibly expend financial benefit gained through international tourism, and the loss of lives as a result of devastating natural hazards, it is clear that the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh its advantages.

Therefore, I am in complete concurrence with the notion that the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh its advantages, considering both increased expenditure due to international travellers that can use up the financial benefit gained through the advantage and the environmental impact that results in devastating natural disasters.

Can anyone give feedback on my writing. Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. What are the advantages and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places? It is generally said that humans are always striving to enrich their learnings through exploring new places. It may be the reason that more people tend to visit remote places where living conditions are harsh with difficult accessibility. There are advantages and disadvantages in this approach. Exploration of these places equips humans with realities and true meaning of their lives. One may learn his own capabilities and limitations. They may also satisfy their self-actualization needs and get to know themselves. Siberia is such example, where despite of difficult situations people tends to visit and upon returning, they contribute more positively to their own communities. When large number of people come to these places, it is also good for their local economy. Many businesses grow with influx of tourism industry and it brings positive impact of lives of residence. For example, there are now many tour operator companies are going to launch their business in Sahara Desserts and many new jobs are created in area. Some disadvantages are also associated with this, if more people are visiting these places than it becomes difficult for Government to ensure their safety. As these area lacks basic infrastructure hence more lives are put in danger. Most people are not fully experienced to survive in these brutal conditions and they add more burden on local services. Secondly, most visitors don’t take care of local customs and annoy local communities. To conclude, we may say that when tourists visit to isolated lands, it improvises themselves and brings positive changes of local community. But at the same it brings challenges for local community.

Nowadays, scientists and tourists can travel to remote natural environments such as the South Pole. What are advantages and disadvantages of this development? Over the past few years , there seems to have been a significant increase in tourist trips to the places where conditions are difficult or unbearable such as the Sahara desert or Antarctic, This type of tourism is expected to become more popular in the upcoming coming years. But like any emerging phenomenon, it also has several advantages and disadvantages. I will try my best to elaborate on each of them briefly. Let’s take a look at the advantageous of traveling to Sahara or Antartica: Based on the latest statistics from Columbia University which was done on 300 volunteers, it was concluded that traveling to remote areas can be extremely dangerous due to various reasons. In fact, trip to difficult and remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can reduce the stress and anxiety of tourists. In addition, tourists can challenge their will and power by going to these areas. Dr. LeoFang ( 2009 ) , who is a psychologist at the Wolford Clinic in Tennessee, conducted several scientific studies which published the results in the American Psychological Association shows that people are frustrated with life after traveling to difficult and remote areas feel more empowered in life an increase life expectancy in them. Traveling to remote areas has some drawbacks: Traveling to remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can be extremely deadly to the traveler because the harsh nature of these areas contrasts with the urban spirit and comfort that tourists are accustomed to. Besides, any injuries or damage to the body due to the distance from the hospital can be dangerous for the injured person. another problem with such trips is that they are limited to natural attractions. Tourists cannot enjoy other aspects of tourist trips such as shopping malls and historic centers and Etc. In conclusion, traveling to the desert, which is becoming more and more popular among tourists every day, has some advantages and disadvantages that tourists can pay attention to them when deciding to make such trips to have a more comfortable and pleasant trip.

Owing to over interest in the tourism, individuals are gaining lot of knowledge.which rises the inclination of people towards belief that it has a devastating impact on them.others, however including I harbour the thought that it is positive infested to them. In the starting paragraph with this statement people believe that the importance of the tourism in the developing countries is more instead of poorer countries. Initially, although, tourism is liked just for enjoyment by certain people still some individuals think that they adapt to new knowledge by travelling .for example when individuals go to any cultural place,they can know about culture and moral values along with history.as a result, they can explore their knowledge.what is another factor? apparently,during the travel time individuals meet with new people.various kinds of language are learned by person because when they meet with new people they try to speak language of them.consequently, they enhance their communication skills. On the other hand, if developing countries give more important on tourism, the life experiences would increase because when person go to another country l.they not only learn about new language but also adapt diverse kinds of things such as how to treat with another and learn many kinds of traveling experience. hence, the tourism have positive effect on them. The cynics of the aforementioned notion, on the other hand, oppose the view, they are of the opinion that if the most people travel from one country to another country. the environment pollution would rise with it because they would travel on any vehicle not by walking.therefore, people would reduce the tourism. To epitomise, indeed somehow I strongly believe that tourism is beneficial for exploring knowledge still devastating effects it had on environment are such that neglecting them would be considered folly.

Pros and Cons of International Tourism

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages? In some countries, tourism plays a big role in keeping their economy stable. Places like Greece, Maldives, and Malta rely heavily on international visits due to the fact that other industries have not been much developed in those areas. Although it dose pose a concerning risk environmentally and locally, I would say that the benefits are far greater than the disadvantages. To begin, international tourism brings a lot of money to the country. Plane tickets, visas, and other accommodations brings income to the country in the form of tax, this supports the economic growth, allowing more money to circulate in the market. Furthermore, as tourist needs a lot of services, it opens a lot of business prospects to the locals. Places like hotels, villas, and restaurants are needed for the guests, these places are also a way to decrease unemployment rate as they need a lot of human resources to run. International tourists are also beneficial as they can promote the various tourism spots to other people. Publication of the areas can lead to more visits allowing popularity to rise. Tourists may also experience the cultural differences, allowing it to be more well-known internationally. Of course not everything in international tourism is beneficial, the minus point is it increases the risk of environment damage and interference in local communities. Pollution, excessive land-use, and waste are some of the threats coming from the guests. This can disturb local residents as they are the ones who will have to bear the consequences of this damaging behavior. In conclusion, international tourism poses great advantages to both the government and local communities. However, to eliminate the downside, strict rules and punishments are needed to ensure the environment and people living in the area are not being disturbed.

IELTS Topics: Travel and Tourism

One of the common IELTS topics that appears in the exam is that of travel and tourism. In today’s lesson, I will help you learn about this topic so that you can do well in your next test.

First we will look at a little vocabulary about travel and tourism , then we will explore some IELTS speaking and writing questions to give you an idea of what to expect.

Vocabulary about Travel and Tourism for IELTS

When you prepare for IELTS, you never need to know any specialist vocabulary, so for questions about travel and tourism you may find that you can give a brilliant answer with just simple language, as long as it is used with grammatical accuracy. Knowing the difference between “I went to London” and “I was going to London” is very important, for example.

Of course, there are other things to know. It helps to know modes of transport and related vocabulary. [You can learn about transport here .] Another interesting aspect is knowing things you might encounter while travelling, such as accommodation.

You should also know the necessary language to talk about types of travel or reasons for taking a trip. Sometimes, new words enter the language, such as “staycation,” which is a very recent portmanteau .

Travel and Tourism Questions [IELTS Speaking]

The topic of travel and tourism is really common in IELTS speaking. It could easily occur in any of the three parts of this test, so you should be prepared to answer a wide range of questions. [You can find some examples here .]

These questions will be pretty general and simple. It is entirely possible that the same basic question could be asked in a number of different ways.

Perhaps the most common question would be “do you like travelling?” This is very similar to “have you done much travelling?” Of course, the focus has changed slightly but the overall meaning is similar: it’s about you and travel .

I’ll give two sample answers to these questions so that you can understand better:

Q: Do you like travelling?

A: Yeah, I absolutely love travelling. I have visited many countries over the past few years, but of course this all stopped recently because of the virus.

Q: Have you done much travelling?

A: I have done quite a lot of travelling in my life. Altogether, I’ve visited about 50 countries and I try to spend a few weeks each year seeing new places.

Note: It is unlikely that these questions would be asked together because they are very similar. Also, I pretty much answered the second one in the middle of the first answer. I just included them to show how a “do you like travelling” IELTS answer example.

Vaguely Related: Space Travel

I definitely consider space to be a separate topic from travel, but there is some small degree of overlap here. For example, there is a reported IELTS speaking question that goes something like this:

Do you want to travel in outer space?
Would you want to travel in outer space?

You might also see this incorrectly reported as “do you want to travel in the outer space?” but this is not correct. We cannot say “the” before “outer space.” It is not a single, definite place. [Read about definite articles here .]

There are numerous possibilities for IELTS cue cards about travel. Here are two of them:

Describe a place you have visited.
Describe a place you would like to visit.

Of course, these would require basically the same sort of vocabulary to answer them, but the key difference would be the grammar. In the first instance, you are talking about the past, but in the second you are talking about a possible future.

Here is another one:

Describe a memorable holiday.

This is pretty similar to the first cue card above, but the word “memorable” must guide our approach. You can see my answer in this video:

In part three of the IELTS speaking test, the questions will become more difficult. These will include abstract topics like age, gender, ethics, and so on. You might encounter questions like this:

Q: Do you think men and women enjoy different types of holiday?

A: I suppose that in general they probably do have different preferences, but of course we should acknowledge the fact that everyone is different and so there are women who enjoy stereotypically male holidays and men that enjoy stereotypically female ones. To give an example, it could be argued that men prefer more active, robust holidays that involve uncertainty, adventure, and even danger. However, I know some women who love this type of thing and so it is not really smart to make assumptions about people.

Q: Do you think that travelling abroad always changes people’s perspective on life?

A: No, not at all. While it certainly is possible that travelling can change people’s perspectives, it is by no means guaranteed. In fact, when you travel to places like Thailand, you see that most tourists have no understanding of the local culture and just hold on to their own original views. The experience may change some people, but I think most people live in a little bubble when they go abroad, and this prevents them from really learning anything.

Notes: I described the sort of travel that men like in interesting terms: “men prefer more active, robust holidays that involve uncertainty, adventure, and even danger.” This is good, descriptive language!

Travel and Tourism Essays for IELTS Writing

Now we shall move on from speaking and instead look at the IELTS writing test. In this section, I will show you some questions about travel and tourism, then show you my sample band 9 answer.

Here is a question that features data about people travelling. I thought that this travel and tourism essay was really interesting, so I have included it here alongside my sample answer.

The line graph displays the numbers of tourists that visited an unnamed Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. The tourists are divided into two groups – those staying on cruise ships and those staying on the island itself – and these had a loosely inverse correlation. The total number of visitors, however, rose more or less continuously throughout the eight-year period.

In the first year recorded, which was 2010, there were about twice as many tourists staying on the island as those staying on cruise ships. A year later, the number staying on cruise ships doubled to a half million, but this dropped back to around a quarter million in 2012. When the figures for tourists on cruise ships dropped, the number staying on the island rose quickly and over the coming few years, as this sudden increased levelled off, the number of people who stayed on board their ship continued to grow again.

Between 2012 and 2017, there were more and more visitors staying on cruise ships. From just a quarter million, this rose to two million, while the figures for those on the island levelled off at just one and a half million and then dropped slightly in the penultimate year, before finishing at one and a half. This meant that, for the final two years, more tourists stayed on cruise ships than on the island.

Notes on the Answer

In the introduction, I said “an unnamed Caribbean island.” It can sometimes be difficult to introduce something whose name you don’t know, and this is a really convenient way to do it. I strongly recommend you say “an unnamed ___” when this situation arises.

I have also used very few numbers in this essay. Instead of writing 250,000 or 2,000,000, I have said things like “a quarter million” and “two million.” This is much easier. [You can read more about IELTS and numbers here .]

Here is another travel and tourism essay question:

In future, more people will choose to go on holidays in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday.

Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Band 9 Answer

In recent years, people have coined the word “staycation” to describe the phenomenon of taking a holiday closer to home. This essay will argue that such holidays will become more common in the future.

First of all, it may seem as though international travel will become increasingly common, but in fact it is quite clear that it is an unsustainable trend. The carbon cost of flying to another country is enormous, and so many people have begun to ask whether it is ethical to continue doing this. Beyond just the personal level, it is clear that pretty soon governments will have to impose restrictions to limit the number of flights; otherwise, the world will suffer immensely from the burden of so many journeys.

In many parts of the world, people are probably ready to embrace this situation. Humans have had a terrible impact upon the world and many feel that it is time to undo the damage done. This involves some measure of personal sacrifice, which in this case could be forgoing the sort of international trips that used to be quite common. However, this is not all bad. Although foreign countries and exotic locations are exciting, there are treasures almost everywhere. Countries like the UK have poor weather, which is why so many people travel to warmer climates, but the natural beauty of the landscape and the extraordinary historical and cultural sites present myriad options for curious travellers. There will likely be a resurgence of interest in such trips.

In conclusion, it is quite possible that in the future people will realise how much damage humans have done to the world. Many of them may endeavour to make the sort of sacrifices necessary to counteract this ecological destruction, and one small step is embracing local travel.

Notes on the Essay

First of all, you can see that I incorporated the word “staycation” right at the beginning. When you use modern language like this, please don’t just jam it carelessly into your essay. Often, it is very informal, so you can only use it when properly introduced. In this case, I clearly explained its meaning and commented upon it from a sociological perspective.

You can see that a lot of my language related to the environment, and of course that is often tied to the topic of travel and tourism because of the negative impacts these have on our planet.

Essay 1-

In a time when globalization is sweeping the entire ecosystem, tourism has a crucial responsibility for developing global economies and nations. Nowadays, tourism is what makes widespread economic contributions to all countries, although there are a few negatives as well. The biggest benefits of tourism are quite obvious, i.e., boosting the national GDP and economy and creating more employment for local citizens and communities. Tourists use diverse solutions while traveling, including booking hotels, flights, transportation, and guides. They also require food, shopping, and leisure while indulging in a wide gamut of other activities. This leads to extra income for thousands, which contributes handsomely to the country's economy. Tourism increases the GDP significantly and helps create more employment opportunities. People are always needed as tour guides, operators, booking agents, hotel and restaurant staff, transportation personnel, etc. Tourism thus has huge benefits to bring to the table for any country and its local population.

Yet, there are some negatives of tourism as well. This includes the rampant damage of several well-known destinations and increased crime or illegal activities. The huge number of tourists thronging popular cultural and historical landmarks and monuments and other centers of pilgrimage lead to major structural and environmental damage. Along with this aspect, national resources are often overused and overexploited for handling this rush of tourists. At the same time, tourists bring their jewelry, money, and other expensive items, becoming targets for anti-social criminals and thieves, leading to a growth in illegal activities and crime. Hence, tourism has some disadvantages as well. However, the Government can take proactive steps to eliminate the same by providing more security and policing while maintaining popular monuments, tourist spots, and natural resources alike.

To conclude, it can be said that while tourism does have specific disadvantages, it has a positive impact on livelihood, national economies, and overall employment. It also fosters cultural exchange, information gathering, and educational growth. Hence, while Governments may fix the negatives with proactive measures, the positives far outweigh them, in my opinion. (370 words)

They are often ignorant about social and legal conventions in foreign countries and end up violating the same in some situations. Tourism also opens up avenues for illegal migration and trading illegal items at times. Travelling abroad is becoming more affordable than ever before, and many nations are implementing new approaches to attract more tourists. Although there are still drawbacks of international travel, I think its values are more significant.

On the one hand, the downsides of welcoming foreign visitors are varied. First, the local environment can be adversely affected due to facility and infrastructural development. For example, in Vietnam, many tourism companies are permitted to chop down a great area of forests to construct modern commodities such as hotels and golf courses, exerting dire consequences on natural habitats. As for the countries that play host to international tourists, the rise in costs of living may lay much pressure on local people and be a detriment to domestic travel. This is because the growth in the number of tourists from abroad would encourage costs of hotel rooms and other services to increase. People in the neighborhood and domestic visitors would suffer in comparison.

On the other hand, I suppose the benefits of international travel would eclipse those analyzed disadvantages. First, the regional economy can enormously benefit from the burgeoning tourism industry as more occupations will be created to accommodate the needs of tourists. Local people can have more job opportunities in hotels or restaurants and therefore earn more money to improve their living standards. Second, the increased number of foreign people coming to visit another country would evidently enhance tourism industries, contributing greatly to the wealth of that country. If tourists enjoy their trips, they will recommend the destination to their friends or perhaps they will come back in the future.

In conclusion, it appears to me that the merits of international tourism are more notable than its drawbacks.

Nowadays, the tourism industry has become a rather lucrative business in many countries that have marvelous natural scenery and cultural heritage. However, whether the pros outweigh the cons remains a controversial topic among many people. I agree with the view that despite the several disadvantages, it definitely plays a significant role in the economic development around the world.

Firstly, it is obvious that as a smokeless industry, tourism can attract a sheer volume of tourists from other places, and then boost the local consumptions like hotels, restaurants, air industry, as well as creating numerous job opportunities. The Australian government, for example, can earn a large proportion of income from its travelling resources with its spectacular scenery along the seacoast each year. Therefore, many countries now are eagerly disseminating their own unique attractions.

Moreover, tourism income may help conserve the natural landscape, wildlife, and cultural heritage. This is mainly because preserving the food, fashion, festivals, and scenery needs a great number of funds. If there is no such huge financial support, the scenic spot will be lack maintenance and disrupted and thus they will be faded away sooner or later.

That is not to say that the tourism industry is flawless. Chances are that local living conditions and lifestyle are disturbed and the environment is degraded due to the fact that floods of travellers pour into the once serene places and bring in rubbish and noise. But like other industries, the governments should legislate to avoid these problems.

In sum, many cities and countries now heavily rely on this indispensable industry; meanwhile, though the pros clearly outweigh the cons, the consequences should be handled by efforts. Only by doing so can we ensure that tourism would be developing in a healthy way.

Tourism Topic IELTS Essay

The global travel industry has witnessed massive growth in the recent decade, attributable to the rise of the low-cost carrier business model. As a result, nations around the world are embracing international tourism as an essential source of economic growth. I believe the advantages of welcoming foreign tourists far outweigh the corresponding disadvantages as long as certain risks are adequately controlled.

Tourism has long been the lifeblood of many economies around the world as well as a tool to carry out international politics. The money that foreign travelers bring to another country creates vital short-term and long-term impacts. In the short term, the expenses paid by tourists go directly to the local populace, improving their livelihood. Thailand probably serves as the best example as many coastal cities such as Pattaya or Phuket have become heaven for people who want to make a good living. In the long-term, private companies, sensing income opportunities, will heavily invest funds into the country, region, or city. These funds will further boost the wealth of the nation. Besides, tourism also plays an integral part in maintaining a balance in global politics by making countries closer and friendlier to each other. The relationship between Vietnam and Korea clearly illustrates how two countries can move from foes to friends by promoting each other’s tourism industry.

Nothing comes without some drawbacks. The growth in international travel has brought up many concerns regarding environmental damages, health issues, and criminal activities. The influx of people to a new destination often creates monumental challenges in waste management. In 2018, the situation was so dire that the government of the Philippines had to shut down Boracay, a hugely attractive traveling destination, for six months to clean out the trash. Airborne diseases, such as SARS or MERS, are also spread faster due to tourism. It is also notable that crime rates have risen sharply in popular holiday spots. However, all of the stated problems can be well handled if governments and nations around the world can cooperate efficiently to promote positive tourism practices. For example, the Southeast Asian countries have created a shared database of people with health risks to track contagious disease movements around the region.

In conclusion, increased tourism will bring about great positive benefits despite certain containable shortcomings. It is expected that countries and companies around the world will further direct their efforts to promote the travel industry.

International Travel Advantages Outweigh Disadvantages IELTS Writing Task 2

As international travel becomes cheaper, more and more people travel and more countries open their doors to increasing numbers of tourists. Some people are of the opinion that international travel does more harm than good whilst others are in favor of the opposite view. From my viewpoint, I prefer the latter opinion for the following reasons.

First and foremost, it is an undeniable fact that international travel goes hand in hand with economic growth since it not only creates millions of jobs but also elevates the tourist industry as well. The most prime example is most countries that have outstanding tourist attractions often has their economic status increased 10% in a few years in comparison with countries that don’t have ones since international travel brings about huge gross profit for travel agencies. Moreover, international travel recruits a huge amount of employees every year and often ensures a high income which results in a decrease in the unemployment rate. In other words, international travel has a great contribution to economic growth in various aspects. Another reason why I advocate international tourism is that travelers can take advantage of it by acknowledging not only diverse cultures but potential business contracts as well. As a matter of fact, tourists have inevitably witnessed and later obtained general knowledge from history to customs by experiencing cultural cross in their visits. For example, in Japan, thumbing up stands for excellent performance whilst in Indonesia, it doesn’t. Moreover, international travel also aids businessmen to reach their full potentials. For instance, an adequate fishing trade circulation may catch the eye of a French businessman who is looking for one on his vacation in Japan. Therefore, it seems reasonable that travelers benefit a lot from international travel.

Some of my opponents claim that international travel has its shortcomings since it may have a negative influence not only on the environment but on society as well. This has some merits on the surface; however, it should be borne in mind that the government has taken strict international travel regulations into practice recently which leads to the fact that rarely can international tourists either violate the law or commit social vices. As a result, international travel has its advantages that outweigh its disadvantages.

In conclusion, international travel stimulates economic development and benefits travelers in various ways. Therefore, the economy and travel experience cannot be upgraded unless international travel is encouraged to become a trend in the future.

IELTS Essay on International Travel

It is irrefutable that international tourism has taken mammoth dimensions. In fact, it has become the backbone of many economies of the world. This situation has both pros and cons. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

International tourism can have many benefits for individuals. The most important benefit is that tourism provides regular employment for many local people who might otherwise be unemployed. They can find work in restaurants or hotels, or with tourist agencies as guides or drivers, for example, and earn regular wages. This, in turn, means that they may be able to save money and improve their standard of living. The second reason is that tourists spend money in the country and this allows local businesses such as restaurants, bars and taxi companies to flourish. In turn, other businesses, food suppliers or petrol stations, for instance, maybe established in order to provide services to support the companies which cater for tourists. In other words, the whole economy of the region develops.

A third reason is that in order for tourists to be able to visit remote areas, roads, airports and hotels have to be built and local people also benefit by being able to use these new facilities. Furthermore, when communications improve, it becomes possible for other industries to move into the area, bringing with them more employment opportunities and increased prosperity. A final reason why I am in favor of tourism is that visitors from outside bring fresh ideas and different ways of doing things to the local community. Consequently, local people may learn from tourists. Likewise, visitors learn about the local people and culture and return home with a deeper understanding of the host country.

On the other hand, that there are some problems associated with international tourism. Firstly, there is the increasing crime rate. Some locals see tourists as easy prey because, not only are they in unfamiliar territory and therefore less able to take care of themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and jewelry which can be disposed of quickly for a profit. Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes the greater danger of spreading contagious diseases around the world. Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too many visitors. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral reefs.

To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that international tourism has both advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
