Apple WWDC 2024: Apple Intelligence is here with ChatGPT integration

Apple has unveiled Apple Intelligence , its artificial intelligence software that features an integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Its capabilities, which will be free when users opt into them, will include composing texts, creating images and emojis from scratch, and organizing and prioritizing functions and notifications while users are on their iPhones or Macbooks.

The new functions were unveiled at Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference Monday at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Though widely expected, initial investor response to the launch of Apple Intelligence was muted, with Apple shares down nearly 2% an hour before markets closed Monday.

Apple execs led by CEO Tim Cook and Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, emphasized that AI on Apple would be "for the rest of us" — an attempt to make a world-changing if still opaque technology relatable to the average Apple user, who they say still expect its products to be secure and approachable.

Longtime Apple analyst Gene Munster said in a post on X that the new suite of features will be enough to prompt a new wave of users to upgrade their products to be able to tap into them.

OpenAI touts Apple partnership, says integration coming later this year

That's not a critique, and Apple is good at taking existing tech and making it consumer friendly. This could all still end up being a leap forward for users, but so far it's about what we would expect.

It seems like Apple has avoided using “artificial” in relation to this AI tech.

Updates to the Health app

Apple mentioned cycle tracking, a feature that's available on the Health app, is available to help people track their menstrual cycle and will now show them their gestational age. Additionally, the app will display a user's pregnancy across all charts and notify them when their heart rate is too high.

Apple Watch update: Training, Vitals app, and custom photos

Apple Watch is getting some new tweaks:

Noise filters will enhance audio quality on AirPods

Nothing direct on AI yet

So far, the features Apple is announcing are updates of existing products and services. While "intelligence" and "machine-learning" capabilities are built into some of them, a big AI reveal has yet to come.

Updates to iMessage

Apple announced multiple key updates to its iMessage app.

First, users will now be able to react to texts with any emoji, not just the options originally provided by Apple. They will also be able to format and schedule texts for later.

Individual words and emojis can also be now be emphasized with a slate of new effects.

Finally, there will now be satellite capabilities on the iPhone 14 and later for both iMessages and SMS messaging. Apple emphasized that iMessages sent over satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Hiking trails coming to Apple Maps

You'll soon be able to access topographic hiking trails, including offline, via Apple Maps. They'll also allow you to create and track your own routes.

New flexibility on iPhone home screen, control center

Apple will let users do more to customize their iPhone home screen, including a new look for app icons in dark mode and a way to customize the colors off icons.

Control Center will also expand to include more settings including home controls and media playback, and providing a way for developers to add controls.

New countries for Vision Pro

Apple announced its Vision Pro at last year's WWDC. Just now, Tim Cook shared that starting June 28, the Vision Pro will be available in China, Japan and Singapore, with more countries to follow in July.

Apple announced VisionOS 2, an updated software platform for its Vision Pro headset.

The key new feature: Vision Pro users will now be able to create "spatial photos" and "spatial videos" — 3D images that add depth to a regular 2-D image.

Don't expect a big surge in Apple's share price today

Just ahead of kickoff, shares in Apple are actually trading slightly lower.

And Apple analyst Gene Munster says not to expect them to do much once the presentations are underway either.

Munster notes on X that Apple's expected AI rollout has already been "priced in," since a statement earlier this from an Apple exec foreshadowing it.

Since that post, on March 26, Apple shares have climbed 15%, Munster notes.

"The bottom line is today’s announcements are largely known and baked into the stock," he said. "What matters going forward is whether Apple will display a core competency in AI."

Apple CEO Tim Cook teased today's event in a post on X from the company's picturesque campus.

Apple AI right on time, analyst says

Many people have criticized Apple for being too slow in its adoption of AI. But independent analyst Ben Thompson says Apple is right on time.

"AI is a complement to Apple’s business, not disruptive," Thompson wrote for his website Stratechery .

He noted that smartphones will likely be the platform that AI technologies are released on for the foreseeable future, instead of AI replacing smartphones. And if Apple announces a partnership with OpenAI (as it is expected to do today), this will likely decrease the threat of OpenAI building its own device to rival the iPhone.

"[They] are well-positioned to be one of AI’s big winners," Thompson wrote of Apple.

A piece of Apple history

Bloomberg's Jon Erlichman notes that on this day in 1977, Apple started shipping its Apple II computers, which helped put the company on the map and make personal computers accessible to the general public.

On the ground at WWDC

It's already a scene at Apple Park.

We’re staged with other media outside the Steve Jobs Theater, though the event is a bit of a walk over to Apple Park Loop. It's a cool 62 degrees but expected to heat up considerably as the day progresses.

More than an hour before the event, there's already hype men at the entrance trying to amp guests up. You can hear the occasional cheer.

Longtime Apple analyst Munster: Most important WWDC since iPhone launch

Gene Munster, a longtime Apple analyst and managing partner and co-founder at Deepwater Assest Management, said today is Apple's most momentous conference since it announced the launch of the iPhone more than 17 years ago.

In a post on X , Munster said today was more important for the future of the company than the announcement of the Apple Store (July 2008), the iPad (January 2010), the Apple Watch (September 2014), Apple TV (March 2019) and the Vision Pro (June 2023)

"Even though AI won’t initially be a direct revenue segment, infusing AI across the product line is essential for the existing products to thrive," he said.

An upgrade for Siri?

Apple first launched Siri in 2011, billing it as a voice assistant that fit right in people's pockets.

Since then, Siri has floundered a bit with no new major upgrades. However, Apple's new embrace of AI could change that.

It's not exactly clear what functions that a Siri with generative AI will have, but we should know in a couple hours.

Apple will be kicking off WWDC24 at 1 p.m. ET with a livestream of the keynote on its website and YouTube channel , as well as the Apple TV app.

What is WWDC?

Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference, commonly known as WWDC, is an annual event to showcase the company's new software and technologies.

WWDC, which started in 1983 , has been a launchpad for some of the company's biggest products. Last year, the company introduced its Vision Pro.

This year, WWDC will run from June 10 to 14 at Apple Park, with the keynote address delivered by CEO Tim Cook at 1 p.m. ET today. Additionally, sessions for developers will be held throughout the week, and the 2024 Apple Design Awards will be presented.

A boost to Apple's bottom line

Apple's embrace of AI could help the company boost its profits and in turn its stock price, according to a note from Dan Ives, a managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities.

He noted that Apple's AI rollout could help spark growth in its key business, most notably iPhone sales.

"In a nutshell WWDC is a pivotal moment in Apple’s future as the developers are the hearts and lungs of the Cupertino growth story and will now start a new AI driven chapter in the Apple growth story for the coming years," Ives wrote in an emailed note.

For some two decades, Apple has been the dominant force in the tech industry. The success of its iPhone has been so massive that it has now attracted the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is suing the company for having created what prosecutors say is a monopoly on smartphones.

A trailer for the company's serene airplane sim focused on the variety of vehicles players can pilot upon its release later this year. We've got some waiting to do, so if you just can't wait to hop in for more peaceful air travel, make sure to watch the above trailer.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle trailer fights through the cold

The Indiana Jones franchise is known for its globe-trotting adventures, and in today's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle gameplay trailer , we got to see the antics Indy will get up to in the Himalayas. MachineGames' sneak peek mostly focuses on the cinematics this time around, but the video still fits in at least a little bit of the project's punchy, whip-wielding gameplay. There's no release date yet, so we'll ahve to wait to see more from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle before it launches sometime this year.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is coming to Game Pass on day one

Developer Leenzee Games and publisher 505 Games announced that their action-RPG, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one . Look forward to learning more when its launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store happens next year.

Avowed trailer takes a deep dive into Obsidian’s next RPG

Avowed will soon join Obsidian’s long list of RPGs, and at the Xbox Games Showcase today, the team gave us a better look at the lush fantasy world awaiting players when launch arrives later this year. Yes, there is still no release date, but the footage shown should help keep players waiting. Alongside sweeping shots of bright locations filled with vibrant purples and blues, we can see fire and ice magic combat, traps, and an variety of enemy types. Avowed launches for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X | S, and PC in 2024.

Atomfall channels Fallout in first trailer

The Sniper Elite team at Rebellion has set a course for greener post-apocalyptic pastures with the reveal trailer for its next game, Atomfall. Packed with color and deadly, dreamlike locations, this first-person survival action game sees players exploring a version of Britan plagued by nuclear waste. This one's due out on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, and PC in 2025.

Assassin's Creed Shadows trailer highlights brutal stealth gameplay

It's no secret that Assassin's Creed Shadows will finally take franchise fans to Japan later this year, but we got to see more of the latest Assassin's Creed entry in action at this year's Xbox Games Showcase. This somewhat lengthy in-engine trailer showed off many of the sights and sounds of this new era while also highlighting some of its cutthroat combat.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl gets radioactive new gameplay trailer

GSC Game World has been hard at work on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, but the team still found the time to splice together a gameplay trailer for this year's Xbox Games Showcase. The FPS survival project's footage takes fans across some of The Zone's sewers and fields, showing some of the friends and foes they will come across upon launch. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's environment is just as deadly as its inhabitants, and we'll learn more about it when its release date of September 5, 2024, arrives.

New digital Xbox Series X console revealed

The Xbox Games Showcase does focus on all of the games players can look forward to in Xbox's future, but it also revaled some of the new hardware that will soon be available to purchase, too . Microsoft unveiled upgraded Xbox Series X | S consoles today that come with additional storage for those looking to download all of the hottest Game Pass releases. The presentation also came with the reveal of an all-digital, white version of the Xbox Series X.

Gears of War: E-Day reveal trailer unveils prequel game

It’s been five years since the release of Gears 5, and now we finally know what developer The Coalition has been up to. The first trailer for Gears of War: E-Day has revealed that the long-awaited continuation of Microsoft’s brutal cover shooter series will be a prequel centered on a young Marcus Fenix. We’re not too surprised to see the Gears of War franchise finally make a comeback with a new mainaline entry, but it’s still so nice to see those Lancers revving up once again.

You can watch the Gears 6 trailer above, but you might want to get ready to fight back some tears as a familier face and tune both return. No release date for Gears of War: E-Day was revealed, but it will launch day one on Game Pass.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 officially revealed

Activision is now under the Xbox umbrella, and that means we got a full look at Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. We nearly made it to the show before details on this year’s installment in the long-running FPS series leaked online . Still, the show itself gave players plenty of new details to mull over while we wait for launch to arrive on October 25, 2024. There were big expectations for Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase this year, the first summer event since the $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard and Microsoft merger in 2023. “It’s the biggest moment of the year to show you the future of gaming with Xbox,” Xbox Wire editor Joe Skrebels wrote in a news release ahead of the event.

The Xbox Games Showcase included a slate of games from Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, Xbox Game Studios, and third-party developers. Immediately following the broadcast, Microsoft and Activision dedicated the second block of its own showcase to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 .

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on Oct. 25 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It’s coming to Xbox Game Pass on launch day, too.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Microsoft and id Software debuted Doom: The Dark Ages , which takes the Doom Slayer back in time. It’s coming to Xbox Game Pass on its launch day, which is expected sometime in 2025. The trailer showed off all the good stuff you can expect from a Doom game — plus what looks to be the Doom Slayer riding a dragon.

State of Decay 3

State of Decay 3 is set “years” after the zombie apocalypse, following up on State of Decay 2 . The latest trailer from the game, which was first revealed in 2020, is a peek at what to expect out of the title. There’s no release date yet, though.

Dragon Age: Veilguard

The new Dragon Age: Veilguard trailer set the tone for the upcoming game, showing off a group of allies you can expect to play alongside when the game is released. It’s coming in 2024.

Starfield: Shattered Space (and more)

Starfield ’s first expansion looks to tackle the creepiness of space, coming to consoles and PC in 2024. But Starfield is also getting a smaller update with new bounties and other content, created by Bethesda and the Starfield community.

Fallout 76 is getting a new update , Skyline Valley, where vault dwellers will get to play as a ghoul in early 2025. It’s a new region of Appalachia, with new mysteries abound. It’s out on June 12, and, again, day one on Game Pass.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the debut game from Sandfall Interactive. It looks like a role-playing game where you’re looking to save humanity from certain destruction. It’s out in 2025 on Xbox Series X.

South of Midnight

Microsoft and Compulsion Games are finally to share more on what South of Midnight actually is. From the makers of We Happy Few , South of Midnight is a beautifully stylized game — set in a fantasy swamp after a hurricane — and coming to Xbox consoles and Windows PC. It’ll be out in 2025.

World of Warcraft: The War Within

On Aug. 26, Blizzard will release World of Warcraft ’s next expansion, The War Within . “Now, at the dawn of a new saga, the darkness calls from the very heart of the world,” Blizzard wrote on YouTube.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater . It’s expected to have a “more modern control style” for while showcasing the game’s original story and world. There’s no release date.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves’ 13th season will be released on July 25, when you’ll be able to become an evil pirate — a villain! — on the high seas.

Flintock: The Siege of Dawn

Flintock: The Siege of Dawn will be released on July 18 on Xbox consoles and Windows PC. From the creators of Ashen , the game is an “explosive Souls-lite” with lots of “god-slaying action-RPG” gameplay.

Age of Mythology: Retold

Age of Mythology , from the creators of Age of Empires , is more than history: It expands into mythology and the worlds of “gods, monsters, and humans.” It’ll be released on Sept. 4 on Xbox Series X and Windows PC.

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark is back! It’s the first look at Perfect Dark ’s gameplay since it was announced, and it didn’t disappoint. There’s no release date.

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred

This October, a new character class, region, and story come to Diablo 4 with the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Blizzard Entertainment debuted the opening cinematic during the Xbox Games Showcase — an emotional, devastating, and gruesome return to the world of Diablo.

Microsoft showed off a cheeky trailer for Fable, which is expected out in 2025. Unfortunately, still no release date for this one.

Fragpunk is a five-on-five shooter with a twist: cards. It’s coming in 2025.

Winter Burrow

A game with a little mouse returning home to devastation, while creating a new home and looking for their aunt. Just a little guy, coming in 2025.

From the makers of The Artful Escape, Mixtape is a mysterious coming of age story told through music. It’s expected in 2025.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Become a commercial pilot in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 , or work in agriculture, search-and-rescue, cargo transport, or aerial firefighting. Head to the skies on Nov. 19.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road

For The Elder Scrolls Online ’s 10th anniversary, Microsoft is releasing Gold Road on June 18.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure

The next installment in the Life is Strange franchise is a flip between realities, once again starring Max Caulfield. She promised to never use her power again — but now she has to save her friend. It’s coming to Windows PC and Xbox Series X on Oct. 29.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Finally, a look at Indiana Jones and the Great Circle . There’s a boulder! It’ll be out on Windows PC and Xbox Series X in 2024 — but no official release date.

Mecha Break

It’s not Gundam, but it looks like it! It’s out in August.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Announced at Xbox Games Showcase, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a soulslike set in the late Ming Dynasty. It’ll be released day one on Xbox Game Pass in 2025.

“Explore the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger” is how Microsoft described Avowed on YouTube. “As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague with a secret that threatens to destroy everything.” Coming in 2024.

Atomfall is a single player survival game set after a nuclear disaster in Great Britain. It’s coming to Windows PC and Xbox Series X in 2025.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the next installment of the iconic franchise, to be released on Nov. 15 on Xbox consoles and Windows PC. The first look at the game’s gameplay shows a ton of promise.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl

GSC Game World, from Ukraine, will be released on Sept. 5. The developer described the game as having a “huge, borderless open-world and a non-linear story.”

New Xbox Series X consoles

There’s now a 2TB SSD Xbox Series X, an all-digital Xbox Series X with a 1TB SSD, and a 1TB SSD Xbox Series X.

Gears of War: E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day looks as brutal as ever, but the trailer had some touching moments of teamwork and camaraderie, too, despite a world in chaos. It’s the sixth installment of the franchise, but there’s no release date just yet.

French President Emmanuel Macron: "Let us be worthy of those who landed here"

France's President Emmanuel Macron delivers a speech during the International commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II "D-Day" Allied landings in Normandy, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, in northwestern France, on June 6.

French President Emmanuel Macron closed the international ceremony marking 80 years since D-Day with a speech honoring the soldiers who fought in the largest seaborne invasion in human history and, as other leaders have done throughout the day, drawing parallels to the current geopolitical unrest — most notably the war in Ukraine.

Perhaps the strongest part of Macron's speech was its end, in which he honored Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — who was in attendance — and the Ukrainian people's fight against Russia.

"Faced with the return of war to our continent, faced with the questioning of everything they fought for, faced with those who claim to change borders by force or rewrite history, let us be worthy of those who landed here. Your presence here today, Mr. President of Ukraine, says it all,” Macron said, followed by a brief interruption of the roar of a fighter jet flyover.

Europe has not seen the type of ground conflict that is raging in Ukraine since the end of World War II, and this year’s anniversary comes as Russian forces advance on the battlefield – handing Kyiv a series of tactical defeats and poking holes in the already fragile Western alliance opposed to the Kremlin’s war.

"We know that liberty is a fight for every morning," Macron added. "For everyone in this world that lives hoping for liberty, for equality, for fraternity the sixth of June is a day without end, a never-ending dawn."

World War II veteran dies while traveling to France for D-Day anniversary

Robert Persichitti, a 102-year-old World War II US Navy veteran, died last week while on his way to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day , according to Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans organization.

Persichitti was a “wonderful, pleasant, humble guy,” who was “easy to talk to,” said Honor Flight Rochester President and CEO Richard Stewart, who told CNN he learned of his friend’s death last Friday.

“We miss him,” said Stewart.

While Persichitti passed away bound for Normandy — where the Allied forces’ landing on June 6, 1944 , laid the foundation for the defeat of Nazi Germany — he served in the Pacific as a radioman aboard the USS Eldorado, Stewart said. His tour of duty included Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam, according to Stewart and the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame , into which Persichitti was inducted in 2020.

Persichitti fell ill last week during a stop in Germany while headed for Normandy, Al DeCarlo, a friend who was traveling with Persichitti, told CNN affiliate WHAM . Persichitti was airlifted to the hospital and died soon after, DeCarlo said.

“The doctor was with him. He was not alone, he was at peace and he was comfortable,” DeCarlo said. “She put his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, on her phone and he peacefully left us.”

Persichitti had heart problems in the past, “but for 102, I would say he was in superb health,” Stewart told CNN.

Persichitti was born in a coal mining town outside Pittsburgh, Stewart said, describing his friend's “humble, poor beginnings.” After the war, Persichitti worked as a carpentry teacher in Rochester, New York, according to the Veterans Hall of Fame, and in 1972 received a degree from SUNY Buffalo.

Trump posts tribute on 80th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy

Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday posted a tribute to the “immortal heroes who landed at Normandy” to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

“Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

France's Macron awards 3 more people the Legion of Honor

French President Emmanuel Macron awards US WWII veteran Arlester Brown with the Legion of Honor during the International commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II "D-Day" Allied landings in Normandy, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, in northwestern France, on June 6.

French President Emmanuel Macron used the international ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day to award the Legion of Honor, France's highest military or civilian distinction, to three more American veterans: Joseph Miller, Richard Calvin Rung and Arlester Brown.

Earlier in the day, Macron awarded the Legion of Honor to Christian Lamb , a 104-year-old British woman credited with having made the maps for the D-Day landing, and 11 other American veterans.

Testimonials and musical performances are taking place during international ceremony

As the international ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Omaha Beach is underway, testimonials from those who fought in the war are currently being read out.

Along with the testimonials, musical performances are demonstrated in front of attendees.

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver an address later during the ceremony.

Austin says "Ukraine matters" in the midst of D-Day ceremonies

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed Russia's war in Ukraine while participating in D-Day ceremonies, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer that "Ukraine matters."

"I have engaged members of Congress on both sides, in both parties. I have seen throughout strong support for Ukraine, and even though it took a while to get the legislation through, I was confident that that the right thing was going to happen."

He continued, "Because anytime you see that type of support on both sides of the aisle for a cause, Congress will find a way to get things done, which is what they did in this case, because it's the right thing to do."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at Thursday's international ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day to a standing ovation and a rousing applause.

Zelensky's presence — and Russian leader Vladimir Putin's absence, despite Soviet Russia's key role in winning the war in Europe — is highly symbolic given how the war in Ukraine is casting a shadow over the day's events.

Several world leaders have already used their speeches to cast parallels between Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the aggression of Nazi Germany that sparked World War II.
