Black text over a white background is standard practice for printed poster presentations, but for virtual presentations, try a very light gray instead of white and a very dark gray instead of black. Additionally, use variations of light color backgrounds and dark color text. Make sure it’s easy to read from two meters away or on a screen, depending on the context. We recommend ditching full white or full black tone usage as it hurts eyesight in the long term due to its intense contrast difference with the light ambiance.

3. Data Visualization Dimensions

Just like the text, your charts, graphs, and data visualizations must be easy to read and understand. Generally, if a person is interested in your research and has already read some of the text from two meters away, they’ll come closer to look at the charts and graphs.

Fit data visualizations inside columns or let them span over two columns. Remove any unnecessary borders, lines, or labels to make them easier to read at a glance. Use a flat design without shadows or 3D characteristics. The text in legends and captions should stay within the chart size and not overflow into the margins. Use a unified text size of 18px for all your data visualizations.

4. Alignment, Margins, and White Space

Finally, the last design tip for creating an impressive and memorable poster presentation is to be mindful of the layout’s alignment, margins, and white space. Create text boxes to help keep everything aligned. They allow you to resize, adapt, and align the content along a margin or grid.

Take advantage of the white space created by borders and margins between sections. Don’t crowd them with a busy background or unattractive color.

An often neglected topic arises when we need to print our designs for any exhibition purpose. Since A0 is a hard-to-manage format for most printers, these poster presentations result in heftier charges for the user. Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

Presenting a research poster is a big step in the poster presentation cycle. Your poster presentation might or might not be judged by faculty or peers. But knowing what judges look for will help you prepare for the design and oral presentation, regardless of whether you receive a grade for your work or if it’s business related. The opening statement

QA Sessions 

When you’ve finished the oral presentation, offer the audience a chance to ask questions. You can tell them before starting the presentation that you’ll be holding a QA session at the end. Doing so will prevent interruptions as you’re speaking.

If presenting to one or two people, be flexible and answer questions as you review all the sections on your poster.

Supplemental Material

If your audience is interested in learning more, you can offer another content type, further imprinting the information in their minds. Some ideas include; printed copies of your research paper, links to a website, a digital experience of your poster, a thesis PDF, or data spreadsheets.

Your audience will want to contact you for further conversations; include contact details in your supplemental material. If you don’t offer anything else, at least have business cards.

Even though conferences have changed, the research poster’s importance hasn’t diminished. Now, instead of simply creating a printed poster presentation, you can also make it for digital platforms. The final output will depend on the conference and its requirements.

Vasileios Kalantzis , University of Minnesota Beyond AMLS: Domain Decomposition with Rational Filtering

This poster discusses the software package Cucheb, a GPU implementation of the filtered Lanczos procedure for the solution of large sparse symmetric eigenvalue problems. The filtered Lanczos procedure uses a carefully chosen polynomial spectral transformation to accelerate convergence of the Lanczos method when computing eigenvalues within a desired interval. This method has proven particularly effective for eigenvalue problems that arise in electronic structure calculations and density functional theory. We compare our implementation against an equivalent CPU implementation and show that using the GPU can reduce the computation time by more than a factor of 10.

We will discuss a surface moving mesh method that is based on the equidistribution and alignment conditions. Then we will formulate a meshing functional for this surface mesh method. Finally, we will present numerical results in both 2-D and 3-D.

Agnieszka Miedlar , University of Kansas Flexible Krylov Subspace Interior Eigensolvers

Determining excited states in quantum physics or calculating the number of valence electrons in the Density Functional Theory (DFT) involve solving eigenvalue problems of very large dimensions. Moreover, very often the interesting features of these complex systems go beyond information contained in the extreme eigenpairs. For this reason, it is important to consider iterative solvers developed to compute a large amount of eigenpairs in the middle of the spectrum of large Hermitian and non-Hermitian matrices. In this talk, we present newly developed Krylov-type methods and compare them with the well-established techniques in electronic structure calculations. We demonstrate their efficiency and robustness through various numerical examples. This is a joint work with Yousef Saad (University of Minnesota).

Truong Nguyen , Wright State University Domain Decomposition for Computing Adaptive Moving Mesh Using Parabolic Monge- Ampere Equation

We propose an iterative or parallel method to compute the adaptive moving mesh by solving the Parabolic Monge-Ampere (PMA) equation. In particular, the physical domain is partitioned into sub-domain in slab or block-decomposition. PMA equation is solved independently for the steady state solution on each sub domain. The adaptive grid is then computed via the gradient of the steady state solution of PMA equation. Finally, the method uses the classical Schwarz's iteration to update the boundary points of the adaptive mesh.

The fast multipole method has a strong physics background, so it is hard for non-physics people to understand its essence. This talk aims to reveal the essence of 2D-FMM in matrix language. Also its connection with the hierarchical semiseparable matrices(HSS) will be explored. We can show that FMM matrix admits a HSS representation. Hence we can perform common operations in linear complexity, such as the matrix vector product and ULV factorization.

We will analyse the error on implementing Scott-Vogelius finite elements to solve Stokes equations over singular meshes.

Hong Zhang , Utrecht University Numerical Investigation of Two-Phase Flow with Dynamic Capillary Pressure Moving Mesh Refinement

Numerical modeling of two-phase flow incorporating dynamic capillary pressure is investigated. The effects of the dynamic coefficient, the infiltrating flux rate and the initial and boundary values are systematically studied using a traveling wave ansatz and efficient numerical methods. The traveling wave results are confirmed by numerically solving the partial differential equation using an accurate adaptive moving mesh solver. Comparisons between the computed solutions using the Brooks-Corey model and the laboratory measurements of saturation overshoot verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Each student may only participate in one poster. If you worked on multiple projects that will be presented, you will have to choose one main poster that your name will be included on as a presenter.

Time Commitment: Please be prepared to stay at minimum for the full span of judges-only time in your session, though it is strongly preferred that you remain in the hall for the full session length.  

Poster Content: Appropriate poster topics include: a new result, a new proof of a known result, a new mathematical model, an innovative solution to a Putnam problem, a method of solution for an applied problem. Purely expository topics are not appropriate for this session.

Poster Evaluation: Each student receives helpful feedback and research advice from professionals and academics in the mathematics field. Every participant will be given critiques, inquires, and accolades based on the mathematical content, student answers to questions and poster design. The MAA Student Poster Session is widely publicized and attended, allowing the students' research to gain interest from the mathematics community. Students have been recruited for and received funding for graduate school based on their poster presentations. The fact that your advisor chose to support your work speaks very highly of your efforts.

Suggestions on Poster Design

  • A tri-fold will be provided for you that is 48" wide and 36" high. For a quick set up, please bring your 48" by 36" poster. We will provide several binder clips so that your poster can be quickly pinned to the tri-fold.
  • Do not crowd the poster with too much content or too small of font size (recommended is the Arial font with 25 point size). 
  • Choose colors that are easy on the eyes and don't use too many colors as it will make the poster look too busy.

KUMUNU 2018 PDE, Dynamical Systems and Applications

Md Al Masum Bhuiyan , University of Texas, El Paso A Dynamical Analysis of Earthquake Waves by Using Ornstein Uhlenbeck Type Model

This work is devoted to modeling of earthquake wave time series. We propose a stochastic differential equation arising on the superposition of independent Ornstein- Uhlenbeck processes driven by a Γ(m,n) process. Superposition of independent Γ(m, n) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes offers analytic flexibility and provides a dynamic class of continuous time processes capable of exhibiting long memory behavior. The stochastic differential equation is applied to the study of earthquake waves by fitting the superposed Γ(m, n) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model to earthquakes sequences in Arizona, USA. We obtained very good fitting of the observed velocity proportional of earthquakes with the stochastic differential equations, which supports the use of this methodology for the study of non-linear sequences.

Jason Bramburger , Brown University Snaking in the Swift-Hohenberg Equation in Dimension 1+Epsilon

The Swift-Hohenberg equation is a widely studied partial differential equation which is known to support a variety of spatially localized structures. The one-dimensional equation exhibits spatially localized steady-state solutions which give way to a bifurcation structure known as snaking. That is, these solutions bounce between two different values of the bifurcation parameter while ascending in norm. The mechanism that drives snaking in one spatial dimension is now well-understood, but recent numerical investigations indicate that upon moving to two spatial dimensions, the related radially-symmetric spatially-localized solutions take on a significantly different snaking structure which consists of three major components. To understand this transition we apply a dimensional perturbation in an effort to use well-developed methods of perturbation theory and dynamical systems. In particular, we are able to identify key characteristics that lead to the segmentation of the snaking branch and therefore provide insight into how the bifurcation structure changes with the spatial dimension.

We are interested in finding the optimal decay rate for a generalized fractional surface quasi-geostrophic equation. This type of equation arises frequently in fluid dynamics. To achieve this goal we use a method called the “Scaling Variables”.

Laszlo Kindrat , University of New Hampshire Numerical Spectral Analysis of the Euler-Bernoulli Beam Model with Non-conservative Boundary Control

Numerical spectral analysis to investigate the vibrational frequencies of a flexible beam model equipped with fully non-conservative linear feedback boundary conditions is presented. The Chebyshev collocation method is used and a novel technique is developed to handle the dynamic boundary conditions. The accuracy of the numerical scheme is demonstrated by showing the rate of convergence of the scheme and by comparing numerical and analytic results. The very good agreement between the asymptotic and numerical approximations of the vibrational spectrum is discussed.

Ang Li , Brown University Linear Stability of Planar Spiral Waves

Planar spiral waves have been observed in many natural systems and also as solutions of reaction-diffusion equation. Our goal is to investigate the linear stability of spectrally stable spiral waves by establishing pointwise estimate of the associated Green's function. The essential spectrum of the linearization about a spiral wave has countably many branches that touch the imaginary axis and is therefore not sectorial: we plan to use the Gearhart-Prüss Theorem to prove the spectral mapping theorem for the linearization about a spiral wave. Afterwards, Laplace-transform techniques will be used to derive the pointwise estimates of the Green's function.
