THE Best Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

Shared by Mary Catherine 30 Comments

Learn how to create a meaningful preschool homework plan for your students using a homework calendar. Be sure to check out the rest of my free preschool printables next!

Below I’ll share how to incorporate a preschool homework calendar into your plans. These homework activities are perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students.

Be sure to note that this isn’t a “traditional” homework plan. Not by a longshot! Instead, it’s focused on hands-on, age-appropriate activities (rather than inappropriate worksheets and such).

Families reading and building together with text that reads preschool homework

“Miss Mary Catherine, what about homework? Her brothers have homework most nights, and I could really use some help in that department.”

Questions like this one aren’t unusual at preschool and kindergarten Back-to-School Nights or Meet the Teacher gatherings. At least not for me.

Parents want the best when it comes to their children’s education, and it’s often assumed homework is an integral part of that.

But early childhood educators want to do what’s developmentally appropriate and best for their students – and research has shown that traditional homework doesn’t fit into that. So how to do we merge each of these viewpoints?

Table of Contents

Do We Really Need Preschool Homework?

As I mentioned above, I’ve noticed that many parents ask about homework. I think some people assume school and homework go hand-in-hand. I’m referring here to the traditional view of homework, with kids sitting down at the kitchen table to fill out pages and pages of worksheets.

I’m inclined to disagree with that, especially when it comes to early childhood students. Young kids need hands-on learning experiences , both at home and at school, to grasp important early learning concepts. I most definitely don’t think the traditional worksheet homework is appropriate for young kids.

Listening to books read by their parents, free play time at home, and maybe some additional hands-on learning activities are more along the lines of the kind of homework I recommend.

The BEST Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

So we’ve established that sit down, pencil to paper homework isn’t that great for preschool and kindergarten. How, then, should homework be handled?

My suggestion: create a preschool homework plan centered around monthly activity calendars.

Explain the research to the parents, and have a quick chat about developmentally appropriate practice . Stress the importance of down time after school, and encourage daily reading snuggled up with the kids.

At this point, parents might still want something more. That’s where the homework calendars come in.

Kindergarten and preschool homework calendars full of hands-on activities

Kindergarten and Preschool Homework Calendars

The printable homework calendars I’ve sent home are definitely not preschool worksheets . They include a variety of tasks that kids can do – sometimes with their families, and sometimes on their own. My goal is for my students, and their parents, to see how learning can take place in a wide variety of ways. Additionally, kiddos with older siblings love having their own “homework” to complete like their big brother or sister.

To put together homework calendars for your students, brainstorm ideas that cover topics such as:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Helping others
  • Self-help skills

Try to keep the daily activities simple, with some ideas the kids can do on their own and some they can try with their parents or siblings. Some of the calendar ideas can relate to your preschool themes , seasons or holidays, or everyday helping tasks.

These homework calendars can go home in their personalized folders at the beginning of the month, with the kids returning them at the end of the month. They can also just be used as suggestions when parents ask about homework for preschool kiddos.

Preschool Homework Ideas

As I mentioned earlier, using monthly calendars for preschool homework is NOT like traditional paper-and-pencil homework. The calendars are meant to be filled with developmentally-appropriate activities kids can do at home.

If you need some ideas to add to the calendars, here you go:

  • Go for a walk outside and count the trees.
  • Tell your family about what you did on the playground today.
  • Listen to a family member read a book.
  • Try to do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Draw a picture of your favorite animal.
  • Sing a song to your family.

As you can see, these are simple and very appropriate activities for young children. And none of them are focused on tracing the number 1 twenty times.

I’d love to hear your thoughts now! How do you handle preschool homework (or kindergarten homework)?

A Year’s Worth of Preschool Homework Calendars

I’m so excited to share with you how you can get a hold of the rest of the calendars now! I’ve received a lot of wonderful emails asking for an entire year’s worth of calendars. Thanks so much for reaching out – I love hearing from you!

So here it is – a full year’s worth of editable homework calendars. It’s a set that includes homework calendars for every month of the year. Each calendar is an editable printable, and there are three versions:

  • One has seasonal clip art,
  • One has non-seasonal clip art, and
  • One doesn’t have any clip art. Each month has a version that’s already full of activity ideas, along with a blank version (but you’re able to edit every single version).

Free Printable Preschool Homework Calendar

I’m happy to share one of my homework calendars with you. It’s even editable! That way, teachers (and parents!) can put their own spin on the homework.

How to Use the Activity Calendar

Grab the September homework calendar PDF and open it up. Click on any of the editable areas and make your own changes. You can change:

  • The directions at the top of the calendar
  • The date (just the number)
  • Each of the homework tasks within the squares

Then print out the calendar and share with your students’ parents. You’re welcome to leave everything the way I’ve written it too. That’s what I am loving about editable PDFs – the flexibility of customizing documents.

Take a look at the homework calendars in action in the video below:

Supplies to Keep at Home

Our homework calendars have some great examples of short learning prompts to give to challenge your children with. On top of those prompts, I think it’s really important to spend quality time playing with your children each day as well.

But it can be difficult to bring out our-inner child to play with our actual child. That’s why I’ve created this list of some things to play with your kids. Check it out below!

I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

  • Build with blocks
  • Play with toy vehicles
  • Pretend play with various play sets
  • Play dress up with costumes and masks
  • Work a puzzle
  • Play age-appropriate games with the whole family
  • Bounce, throw, and kick playground balls back and forth
  • Color in coloring books or draw pictures
  • Read stories
  • Draw with sidewalk chalk
  • Create crafts
  • Let your child decide!

Just follow your child’s lead and the two of you are sure to have a blast! Remember – your child will cherish any time you spend with them. They’ll cherish that quality time even more when you’re investing in them and doing something they love. So don’t worry about embarrassing yourself or looking silly. In my book, the sillier – the better!

Hi Mary Catherine! Love your blog! What a lovely job you’ve done. Was hoping to print out the calendar for use at home, but when I click the link it’s a blank template. Is there another link for the filled out version? Thanks so much and looking forward to following you! 🙂

I want to buy your homework calendars but can’t figure out out to purchase them. I am able to put them in a cart but that is all. Do I have to purchase a membership in order to buy them?

September 28, 2016 at 10:41 pm

No, you don’t have to become a member to get the calendars. Once you’ve clicked “Add to Cart”, select “View Cart”. Then click on “proceed to checkout” and enter all the details regarding billing. If you are doing those steps and it is still not working please let me know specifically where you are having trouble, so I can help. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the calendars! 🙂

Any early childhood teacher that has had child development knows that that kind of pressure on young children is not age appropriate. I would not put recommend a preschool or kindergarten that required their students to do real homework.

I have sent home games that children really like and want to share with parents. I have also suggested games and activities that parents can do with their child to help develop a skill but I always emphasized the need to be careful not to force a child to do an activity.

July 31, 2017 at 11:21 am

Love your ideas! That’s why I like the activity calendars – suggestions for families but no stress if it gets done or not. Definitely no traditional homework (I honestly don’t like it for elementary school either).

Explain that each year, the earth rotates around the sun one time. It takes 12 months. As each month passes, the earth moves a little bit more around the sun. After 12 months, it has come full circle, and a new year begins. Altogether, it takes 365 days for a complete rotation. For a concrete illustration, have children sit in a circle. Place a model of the sun in the middle. Choose one child to walk around it while holding a model of the earth.

This set includes an entire year’s worth of editable, printable homework calendars. And they’re pre-filled with engaging ideas that are just right for preschool and per-kindergarten.

These aren’t anything like traditional homework, don’t worry.

Each weekday has a simple activity for the children to do (like “draw a picture of the friends in your class”, “help with the dishes”, “find 5 things that are red”, etc.).

Editable, Printable Homework Calendars for Preschool

This 150+ page homework calendar pack contains the following:

  • Directions for editing the calendars
  • Suggestions for how to incorporate the calendars into your classroom
  • 3 choices for the month of December
  • 12 already filled in with homework ideas
  • 12 left blank, ready for your ideas

Each of the included calendars (76 in total) is considered an editable printable . That means each of the calendar versions can be customized to include the homework options you’d prefer.

The title is also editable so you can change the word “homework” if preferred.

Half of the calendars are already filled in with possible homework activities for your students. Each week includes a math activity, a literacy/language activity, a movement activity, a “helpful” activity, and a drawing activity.

Please note that the ideas are the same for each month, no matter what the version is. So each of the January calendars have the same activities listed.

Even though ideas are already included in the filled-in calendars, you can edit them depending on your needs. That could mean using some of the suggestions and adding some of your own. That could also mean leaving everything the way it is and using all of the suggested activities provided.

The other half of the calendars are blank. You can edit them directly on the computer by adding your own homework activities. You can also print them out and add hand-written notes if that’s your preference.

Preschool Homework Calendars-Editable, Printable Calendars with an entire year's worth of ideas

I used this for remote learning. It gave parents ideas to work with their child. I encouraged the families to include the whole family in the activities. Many parents and grandparents commented how much fun the activities were. they seemed to enjoy doing the many different types fo activities and having a choice of what to do.

Marcia S. via TpT

Thank you so much! Not only is it engaging for my Pre K kids but the parents enjoy it too! I also love how it’s editable so I can add in concepts I need the families to work on with their kids!

Melissa R. via TpT

These calendars are a great way to encourage parents to complete simple but effective learning activities with their child. What a time saver for me! I print them on colored paper and they look so professional!

Many of our resources address a wide range of topics. This way we can help you cover many skills in an efficient way that is still fun and engaging for children. In this section we’ve listed the key skills, not necessarily all of them.

The skills taught in this product include:

General FAQ

Please note that it’s very important to download the resources to your computer.

Then be sure to open the document in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. Editing isn’t consistent when using other programs, and the editable document might not work correctly if you open it in the web browser or another program.

To edit resources like our monthly activity calendars, begin by deleting the original text you want to replace.

You can do this by putting your cursor in the gray/blue editable box, highlighting the text and typing in your replacement text.

Or you can put the cursor at the end of the text and hit “backspace” to delete the original text. Then type in your preferred replacement text.

Oh no! Nobody wants to waste ink or paper.

Luckily there is a quick fix for this.

Typically the black boxes mean it’s time to update your version of Adobe Reader. You can do that for free here:  https://get.adobe.com/reader/

Once you’re sure you have the current version of Adobe Reader be sure you are opening the file in Adobe Reader instead of your web browser or a web preview.

Print the file from your computer, rather than a phone or a tablet.

If you are still having trouble, try these additional trouble shooting tips:

  • When you go to print, choose “Advanced” in the box that pops up.
  • Then click “Print as Image” near the top.

If you’re printing from a Mac, and the above suggestions don’t work, try this:

Find the file. Click and hold. Press Control. Choose Open With Adobe.

There is no password needed.

If you are getting prompted to add a password or unable to print/edit, there are typically two troubleshooting steps that will fix the conflict.

1) Update your version of Adobe Reader. They make updates regularly. These updates sometimes trigger the password prompt even though one is not required. You can update your version for free here:  https://get.adobe.com/reader/

2) Also be sure you are opening the file in Adobe instead of your default web browser.

If you purchased an item here from the Preschool Teacher 101 shop, there are two ways to access your files.

We email a copy of your order to the email you used during your purchase. You may use the link in the Download column of that confirmation email to access your files. (Be sure to check spam if you do not see your email in your main inbox.)

You can also always access your files here on our website by logging in and going to to www.preschoolteacher101.com/my-account

From there select “Downloads.” The links to download the file will be under the column Download.

If you bought on TpT, go to the “My Purchases” section on TPT or to the original product listing on TpT to download the file.

So you clicked the link on your website or in your confirmation email, and now you have no idea where to find the download? No worries!

If you’ve clicked that link already while on your computer, you may have the file without realizing it.

If you are on the computer and clicking the download link the file is saved to your computer’s Downloads folder (unless you right click and save it to a different location).

Go ahead and double check your Downloads folder to see if the file is already there.

If you still don’t see it, then it’s possible the automatic download was blocked for some reason.

Still no worries! Instead go ahead and right click on the download link and select “Save link as…”. This will open a box to let you save the file anywhere you’d like.

No, all of our resources are instant one-click digital downloads. You will need Adobe Reader (available for free) to download in order to open most of the resources.

Teaching Calendar Skills to Preschoolers: 7 Fun Projects

Young children are starting to develop a sense of time and sequence, learning the days of the week, and practicing the order of numbers during the preschool years. Looking at the calendar each day is an activity that promotes this learning but it can become tedious week after week. Creating fun calendars can be educational and exciting. Think about your calendar as not only a way to mark time, but to collectively record daily events, experiences, and observations. Here are a few ideas for teaching preschoolers all about the calendar.

Fun Calendars to Make in the Classroom

Loop Chain Calendar

Create an advent-type calendar by making circular loops, one for each day of the month (28, 30, or 31). Number these and link them together. Each morning, pick one child to remove a loop. As the chain gets smaller, you’ re getting closer to the end of the month. By using a different color for each day of the week, the children will have the opportunity to learn the days of the week and sequencing in a pattern. You can also print the numbers of each loop on it for counting practice.

Calendar Stories

Start off with a large grid calendar on chart paper. Number the days in the upper corner. Each day, pick one child to fill in a square on the calendar. Ask the child what is important about today or what she would like to do. With crayons, invite the child to draw a special picture in the block. The child can then interact with the class telling a story about her picture.

Musical Calendar

Fill in each day’s section with a traditional classroom song. Each morning, reveal the day’s song and start the morning off with music.

Feelings Calendar

Pick a month for discussing feelings as a theme and how it is normal to have good days and bad ones. Select a child each day to fill in the grid with a happy, sad, or angry face. Talk about what makes the child feel the way he does.

Weather Calendar

Tracking the weather can help children become more aware of their immediate surroundings. Using the observation approach, check outdoors for the weather conditions and record these on your calendar. Draw pictures of the sun, clouds, rain, snow, lightening, and so on. For older children keep a thermometer handy to record and compare temperatures.

Treat Calendar

Make and number a traditional calendar on a poster board. You will need clear plastic sandwich bags, one for each day. Fill the bag with small treats, one for each child in your class. Think about small treats such as animal crackers, popcorn, raisins, etc. Each day after discussing calendar facts, pull off the bag and nibble a small treat together.

Calendar Call Game

Tape a calendar page with large sections to the floor. Using a bean bag, invite one child to toss it across to the calendar. The player then recites the month, the day on which the bag lands, and the year. Give each child a turn at this game that is repetitive and reinforces skills.

Teaching your students calendar skills can support their self-expression as well as enhance their self-esteem and problem solving skills.
