How to Use a Green Screen for Online Teaching

What is a Green Screen?

Why should you use a green screen in your online classroom, what equipment do you need to use a green screen, setting up your green screen for online classes, classroom backgrounds: find media to use with your green screen, wrapping up: start green teaching.

A green screen is a backdrop made up of a single color (usually green, but sometimes blue). It is usually made of fabric, such as muslin cloth. You can also make it from cardboard, canvas, and even use a green painted wall.

The green screen is used together with a technique called chroma-keying. We don’t go into the technical details here; instead, we’ll give you this to-the-point explanation from  MentalFloss author Nick Keppler :

Chroma-keying is the process of isolating a single color or brightness value in an electronic image and then making that value transparent in post-production, allowing another image or footage to be placed “beneath” the color that’s been blanked out.

Although green is used so often that “green screen” and “chroma key” have become almost interchangeable, any color will work. Green is the go-to because it doesn’t match any natural skin tone or hair color, meaning no part of an actor will be edited out through chroma key.

Green screens are used in a variety of photo and video shooting scenarios; one of the more well-known uses of the green screen is the weather report on television.

The example below shows how chroma-keying with a green screen works. The green color behind the person is isolated, then replaced with another image layer:

How a Green Screen Works, in the TV Weather Report

Obviously, using different backgrounds during an online lesson will help you to deliver more effective and fun lessons, and compensate for the disadvantages of not being physically in the same room:

  • You can use backgrounds related to the lesson topic to create an immersive learning environment.
  • Instead of using props , you can show specific objects or situations in the background to explain concepts, elicit discussion and check comprehension ; for topics such as geography, landmarks, landscapes, nature, food, and more.
  • You can make your lessons easier to follow and show videos, presentations, or exercises, while your students can still see you on the screen.

Besides, using a green screen has some practical, not-so-obvious advantages:

  • Your students can’t see your furniture, clothes, or personal items (or mess) in your home.
  • Your family members or roommates can walk around the home without having to duck and crawl behind you while you teach online
  • You can work from almost any location without your students knowing where you are.
  • You can change up your virtual background without redecorating your actual work space.

Overall, a green screen will let you look more professional, create better results, help you get better ratings and thus, earn more classes.

In this article, you will find 18 best practices to increase bookings for your online lessons.

Although a green screen setting is neither complicated nor expensive, you’ll need to invest in some equipment:

A Computer with Fast CPU and Sufficient RAM

It’s important to realize that software to use for chroma-keying your green screen background during a live online ESL lesson can be incredibly demanding on your computer’s processor and memory. You need to make sure you have a capable computer to handle the chroma-keying processes.

Our recommendation is to have a computer with at least the previous-to-current generation Intel i5 CPU running at 3GHz with no less than 4 cores, and at least 8 GB of RAM.

Important: With tablet computers and smartphones, you won’t be able to use a green screen.

Check out our  recommended computers for online ESL teachers , all of which have the specs to perform well when using a green screen while teaching online.

The Green Screen

Green screens range from very cheap, to costly. You don’t need an expensive pro-grade kit. Indeed, many online ESL teachers make do with fabric they buy from the local fabric store. You can mount them on a stand or frame, or hang them on the wall or the ceiling.

Buy a green screen large enough to cover the area behind you adequately: It should be both wide and high enough to cover the entire area picked up by your webcam. Dimension requirements will vary for each person based on their height, work area, and whether you stand or sit while you teach online.

Here are a couple of affordable, recommended options available on Amazon:

Green Screen Studio Kits

The majority of online ESL teachers will be working from home. For those who have a spare room or home office where they set up their online classrooms, green screen kits are a quick, all-in-one solution.

Although the studio kits portable, they’re not really convenient when you change your teaching location frequently.

Collapsible Backdrops for Ultra-Fast Setup

If you teach online in your home with limited space, then your best option is to get a collapsible green screen backdrop. They can be quickly opened and closed, don’t require assembling or fudging around with separate stands, and can be stored away in a closet or in the basement when you’re not using it.

Portable Backdrops

Portable green screen backdrops are different from collapsible green screen backdrops in that they can fit in a suitcase, making them the ideal option for online ESL teachers on the road. You can hang them on a stand or wall behind you, or mount them on the back of your chair.

One major downside of portable green screens is that due to their compact size, you have to position them more precisely to fully cover your background. If you like to teach while standing, or even move around a bit, then this type of green screen backdrop is probably not the right item for you.

Green Screen Wall Paint

Though not for everyone, some online ESL teachers prefer not to mess about with positioning the green screen backdrop. If you have enough space and a wall you can paint, green screen paint is an excellent option. Even if you would rather not paint your wall green, you can get a wooden board, drywall or a thick sheet of cardboard to paint over.

The great thing about green screen paint is that you don’t have to worry about creases and folds, kicking or tripping over the green screen stand, or messing about positioning it. You just paint the wall, or lean the board against the wall, and you’re good to go.

Of course, painting a color across a wall or board means you will need to know how to paint, and to make sure the paint is consistently applied. You may also need to apply a few coats to the wall or board.

Many people who use green screens will tell you that your lighting setup is more important than the green screen. When using a green screen for online teaching, lights serve two purposes: Illuminating the teacher and the green screen.

As you will discover when you set up your green screen in your work space, these two aspects will often conflict with each other.

You might find that your face and body in the webcam view are well-lit, but there is some  fuzziness  around your head. On the other hand, you might find that your face and body in the webcam view are well-lit with no fuzziness around your head, but there is some fuzziness around the ends of the green screen.

This fuzziness (often referred to as bleeding) is usually due to too much light on the green screen, causing the color to spill.

Both the amount of lighting as well as the color tones you use will play a role in striking the right balance. Different chroma-keying apps also handle the chroma-keying process differently. Ultimately, you will need to play around with your lighting setup until you get it just right.

Check out our  recommended LED lights for online teaching  to see which lighting options are best for your work space and green screen setup.

Chroma-Key Software

You will need an app that will chroma-key your green screen background. There are several free and paid apps available to accomplish this. What app you use will depend on your computer OS, as well as your specific needs. Some go beyond chroma-keying capabilities, like  ManyCam Studio , which has an extensive set of features that enable you to show clip art, YouTube videos, add lower third text on your screen, wear a virtual mask, and much more.

The popular videoconferencing app Zoom, includes a virtual background feature that lets you  skin  your background with an image or video using a green screen, and if your computer’s CPU is powerful enough, you can skin it without a green screen. Zoom is an excellent app, but it’s only useful you’re using Zoom specifically for online teaching. If you use another platform, or if the online ESL company you work with has its own proprietary platform, you will need to use an app like ManyCam Studio, which creates a virtual webcam device on your computer that you can use with a green screen and more. Some teachers even use ManyCam and Zoom to access the additional features ManyCam offers while using Zoom.

Here is a list of apps that let you take advantage of your green screen:

Price: starting from $39 per year or $79 lifetime for one device

Available for Windows and macOS

ManyCam Studio is designed to give you a suite of screen effects while live-streaming. Although ManyCam has a free version, to unlock the chroma-key feature, you will need to purchase the paid version. ManyCam has an impressive feature set that can transform how you teach online and interact with your students.

Open Broadcaster Software

Price: free

Available for Windows, macOS and Linux

OBS is a free, open-source software you can use to record and live stream your screen with a green screen background. Besides being free, OBS packs some really cool features, such as being able to set up multiple  scenes , which means you can display images, videos, text, browser windows, and more, alongside yourself via your webcam.

Free is hard to beat, but you’ll need to rely on the community and a public knowledge base to get support if you need help. It’s recommended for more advanced users.

Video Meeting Software

Nowadays, most software for video conferencing has already built-in background-removal functions. They work even without a green screen – of course, with one, they produce much better results.

These software programs include the most popular ones:

  • Google Meet
  • Microsoft Teams

You can use all the video meeting solutions for free; however, for regular teaching, we recommend using the paid versions which offer more functionality and stable connection. Prices range from $10 to $20 per month.

Here’s how easily it works in Google Meet:

  • In a meeting, click on the menu item with the three dots in the bottom bar, then choose “Apply visual effects“ from the pop-up menu.
  • In the sidebar opening on the right, simply choose one of the default backgrounds images, or upload an image.

Background effects you can use in Google Meet

Google even offers animated backgrounds with birds flying around or with different weather outside – which looks simply wow!

You see the effect isn’t perfect in my example; I made the screenshot without using a green screen and proper lighting. (Still impressive how good it works nevertheless!)

In MS Teams or Zoom, you’ll find the background-removal functions analogously in the settings; it’s not complicated.

However, these video meeting tools don’t offer advanced configuration settings, so the results may not be as perfect as you expect. And you can’t use them when you need to teach with another software or with a teaching platform of your teaching company.

That’s why buying a software like ManyCam seems like a good investment; you won’t get broke from a $79 one-time fee. You can use it with any video conferencing tool or teaching platform, and tailor it exactly to your needs.

Video Tutorial

In this short video, online ESL teacher Michael Wasserstein guides you through the important aspects of setting up a green screen for your online classroom.

Install and Run Your Chroma-Key App

The first step we recommend you take is to install and run your chroma-key app. Get familiar with the features of the app, so you can set up your green screen and lighting according to the functionality and recommended settings of the app.

Set Up Your Green Screen

Measure the area behind you that your webcam captures. An easy way to determine the green screen size you need is to use a spare bedsheet in place of the green screen. Use some measuring tape to measure the dimensions of the bedsheet that come into the webcam view so that you can figure out the length and width of green screen fabric you will need to buy.

You might need some help from a family member or friend to hold the bedsheet while you measure the area. A 6 x 9 feet (ca. 1.8 x 2.7 m) muslin cloth green screen should be sufficient for most online ESL teachers.

You also need to decide if you will be attaching or hanging the green screen to the wall, or using a frame to hold your green screen in place. We recommend using a frame, as this will make it easier to move around the green screen as needed, and won’t damage your wall.

After you have purchased your green screen, make sure it is free of creases or wrinkles by ironing them out with an iron on low temperature. Once you’ve done that, you can attach it to the frame.

Some green screens are set in a retractable frame, and if you are using one of these, then you can simply pull it open and lock into place.

Make sure your green screen is correctly positioned to fill up the area behind where you will be sitting or standing while teaching online . You will need to do this with your chroma-key app open on your computer so that you can view the area your webcam displays.

Set Up Lighting and Adjust Brightness and Positioning

Now that you have your green screen in place, you need to determine how bright your online teaching workspace is, and how many lights you need. If possible, choose LED lights with different color temperature settings, so you can increase or decrease brightness in different spots of your work space.

You will need to position and adjust your lighting with you standing or sitting in front of your computer with the chroma-key app open to preview yourself and your webcam.

You’re not done with lighting just yet. Next, we need to find and insert an image layer to replace the green screen behind you to test your green screen and lighting set up with your app.

Choosing an Image to Chroma-key

Although you can use any image to replace the green color in your green screen, we want to start with the most basic image that will enable us to test and tweak our green screen and lighting set up. For this, we can use a plain white image because a white image is void of any color, and will reveal any issues with light spill/bleeding.

Let’s see how to do this using ManyCam:

presentation board green screen

Looking for a plain white image to insert into your chroma-key app? We’ve got you covered. Click this link to download a plain white image.

If you see any fuzziness or bleeding around your head or on the green screen itself, you will need to check for and iron out any creases or wrinkles in your green screen, and reposition your lighting. Using the white background will also help you figure out if you need to get add lights to your setup.

This image illustrates how the white background will replace the green screen. Notice the slight green spill around the hair, body, and hands:

Note: If you have long hair, we recommend tying it back to reduce the green spill around your head.

presentation board green screen

Now, you are ready to use your teaching studio. Everything you need to do now is finding great images or other media to use to “decorate” your classroom background.

As an online ESL teacher, you will constantly be on the hunt for media to use in your online classroom. A few excellent sites where royalty-free images can be found for free are:

These sites have a broad range of photos, illustrations, vectors, and videos to choose from, so you should have little difficulty spicing up your green screen images.

If you need some inspiration, look at these 10 great classroom images from Pexels we’ve selected for you as a starter:

presentation board green screen

Now that you have a good idea how to use a green screen in an online classroom, get started! It’s really not as difficult as you think, it’s very affordable, and the difference using a green screen will make to your online lessons will be dramatic.

It might take you a bit of time to adjust your green screen and lighting to get the ideal setup. It will take you a couple of days to get comfortable using the chroma-key software. But within a month (or less), you will find green screening a cinch, and you’ll begin to wonder how you ever taught online lessons without one.

G reen screens are often associated with big budget Hollywood movies. Action, sci-fi, and fantasy films rely heavily on massive green screens to bring these incredible worlds to life. You may not have the budget of Avengers: Endgame at your disposal. But a green screen may be just what you need for your next project. Luckily, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Learning how to make a green screen is a lot easier than most people think. Play your cards right, and you could probably make one for less than $20.

HOW TO MAKE A GREEN SCREEN

How to make a diy green screen.

Right now you’re probably asking yourself, “How do I make a green screen?” After all, big budget movies have them, so they must be expensive. But a cheap green screen is within your reach. And with a home green screen, you can film all kinds of scenes in your living room without spending an arm and a leg.

HOW TO CREATE A GREEN SCREEN

Diy green screen with poster board.

You can find multi-colored poster board at any craft store (Michaels, JOANN Fabrics & Crafts). You should be able to find poster board in lime or neon green. Blue boards also work but make sure you know the difference between blue screen vs green screen .

How to Make a Homemade Screen for $6  •  iLuvTrading

One poster board may be enough if you’re just filming someone from the neck up. But as the above video shows, you can combine multiple poster boards together to create one large surface you can chroma key later.

If using a poster board, you want to make sure you don’t use one with a glossy surface. The gloss ends up reflecting too much light, and it creates problems later in post.

GREEN SCREEN FABRIC

How to utilize green screen cloth.

Fabric stores often have huge rolls of fabric, and you can cut out exactly as much as you want. You should be able to find a basic green or blue one that can serve as the backdrop for your scene. JOANN Fabrics has a green gabardine fabric that works exceptionally well you can check out and learn more about in the video below.

Making a Chroma Key Screen  •  The Slanted Lens

If possible, you should opt for a heavier fabric as it hands better and provides superior coverage. The one thing to remember with fabric is that it can wrinkle. If you plan on transporting the fabric to a certain location, then you may need to iron it later to smooth it out. Everything needs to be even to ensure you can key out the color later.

With fabric, you need a way to hang the material behind the subject. Along with the fabric, you also need to invest in stands as well as thumbtacks, hanging nails, or clothespins to keep it in place.

GREEN SCREEN WALLPAPER

Diy green screen with paint.

This option isn’t going to work for everyone. But if you have a spare wall available somewhere, then you can paint it green or blue for a simple green screen setup that’s always available.

Just make sure you choose the idea green screen color .

How to Paint a Chroma Key Screen Wall  •  Syn

You just need to make sure you choose a matte or matte enamel finish so that the wall looks flat and smooth. Additionally, matte paints don’t reflect light. The wall you select should be smooth. Any popcorn aesthetic needs to be smoothed out otherwise you’re going to get inconsistent lighting when it actually comes to filming.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SCREEN

How to make a green screen stand.

If you plan on using a green sheet or curtain, then you need a stand to keep it taut. You can’t just drape your material over a clothesline and expect an easy time chroma keying later. Depending on how handy you are, you can make an impressive homemade green screen stand. But the easiest (and cheapest) way to make a frame is to follow these steps.

1. Get the right materials

Knowing how to make a chroma key green screen at home means you better get familiar with your local Home Depot or Lowe's. You need the following materials to make a standard frame.

  • (4) ½” 90-degree elbows
  • Saw or PVC pipe cutter

How much PVC pipe do you need? It really comes down to how big you want your frame to be. If you just need a screen to go behind someone’s head because you’re filming a close-up , then a 2” x 2” frame should do the trick.

2. Cut your PVC pipe

You should get 10 feet of PVC pipe if you want a 2” x 2” frame. Technically, you only need 8 feet, but it’s a good idea to have some spare pipe just in case.

In the event you want a bigger frame, then it can be a good idea to reinforce it on the inside with some tee sockets.

3. Affix the PVC pipes together

Using your 90-degree elbows, attach the PVC pipes together at the joints. From there, you can easily slide the cloth over your new frame.

How to Make a Stand for $10  •  The Stumys

You can get creative and make a stand of your very own design. But when you just need something simple to film with, especially if you plan on making YouTube videos, this basic setup works well for a great price.

GREEN SCREEN TIPS

Other materials and techniques.

You may buy something green and think that’s the end of it. But to get the most out of your chroma keying, you’re going to need other materials to make your videos the highest-quality possible.

First and foremost, you need screen lights directed toward the screen to provide an even shading across. Uneven lighting can make it difficult to key out later in editing. While you can opt for some Diva 400s, some basic lights with fluorescent bulbs do the trick when you’re on a budget.

You also need a key light , back light , and fill light . This is to better ensure the subject looks natural against the backdrop you fill in later.

Our blog on green screen lighting provides a better overview of how you should light a these scenes.

You may require green gaffer’s tape to affix poster boards or fabric together. And a green screen suit can make for some pretty cool effects.

5 Simple VFX  •  Studio 2 Magic

Whether you have thousands of dollars in your budget or less than $100, you can make a professional-looking video. You just need to get creative. But since you’re a filmmaker, that shouldn’t be a problem!

DIY GREEN SCREEN FOR STREAMING

Buying a chroma key kit.

The above methods should only cost you about $10 to $20. But if you have a little extra cash to spend, then you could consider buying a full-fledged kit. It’s a great way to get everything you need, especially if you’re concerned about altering fabric or poster boards.

Best Kits of 2019  •  TheTechMag

This video gives you four great options. They all cost over $100 though. But in addition to getting your green screen, some kits come with lights and stands, which you need as well to bring your project to life.

Before buying any green screen kit, you should have a good idea of what you want to film. Some green screens you buy are smaller, making them great for YouTube channels where it’s just a person talking to the camera. Others need a full-on green screen rig to film scenes with several people.

If you have the money, then it can be good to invest in a professional setup. Even if you make your own green screen, there’s still the matter of everything else you need to make it as easy as possible to edit the green screen out later.

How to use a green screen like a pro

Green screens can make any amateur production into a professional-looking one. But that’s only if you know what you’re doing. You don’t need any special training to do chroma key compositing. With our handy instructions, you’ll be wanting to find every excuse to use your green screen as often as possible.

6 Excellent Green Screens for Online Teaching

Green screens for Zoom virtual backgrounds,  ManyCam, and  online teaching platforms make for a surprisingly easy, fun, and professional background. While it may seem intimidating from a technical and cost standpoint, green screens are affordable and easy to use.

A green screen may be right for you, as having a good, thoughtful teacher background for your online class is essential. We have our dedicated guide on some quick and easy design options for your  teacher background , but it may be a good idea for some teachers to get a green screen and use a virtual background.

Are Greenscreens expensive and complicated?

Most of us associate green screens with big expensive movie productions. That a green screen is costly to purchase and confusing to use, but the reality is that green screens can be small, affordable, and easy to pack up and put away.

On top of that, you can take advantage of using various apps like  Many Cam ,  Zoom , or Skype that can use a custom virtual background.

How do they work?

Greenscreens work by way of  chroma-keying . It’s a process of having one solid color that can be made transparent in either post-production (or live in a Zoom call, for example) by having the image, video, or footage positioned beneath the color and then blanked out.

Green is the most popular color because our skin tone and hair don’t match the color green. You can’t wear any green clothing, but the chroma-keying process works with any color, not just green (blue is the second most popular color).

What to look for in a green screen for a virtual background

You have a few different options when purchasing a green screen. You can get something as simple as green fabric from any store or buy a simple and affordable green screen kit.

You need to take care and make sure your greenscreen is free of wrinkles and various creases, as it makes the chroma-keying process more difficult.

Next, you’ll need enough material to cover the area behind you and a way to hold up the greenscreen. Some teachers tape their greenscreen to a wall; others use a hangar to hold everything up.

This is an uncomplicated, no-frills green screen. It comes in at a 5-foot width and a 10-foot height. It’s not too big, but it is on the larger side, so just be aware that you will need a bit of space to get this screen setup.

It also has nothing to help hold the green screen up, so you must improvise. Either tape it to a wall or get a dedicated green screen stand like this Emart backdrop stand .

It’s just a simple, primary, easy-to-use option. Be careful not to wrinkle it when you put it away. Otherwise, you’ll have to spend some time ironing out creases.

  • A simple, easy to use green screen that works with Zoom, Manycam and streaming software like OBS.
  • Affordable and easy to pack up.
  • You’ll need to source your own way to hang this up. We suggest getting a T-shape backdrop stand.

Elgato Green Screen – The Collapsible Option

presentation board green screen

The Elgato Green Screen is a unique option simply because it comes with a built-in stand that is also collapsible when not in use. You take it out, expand it, the material is held tight so there are no wrinkles, and then you can put it away when done.

This option is a bit more expensive than we would like, but it works well. You take it out, extend the screen, and everything locks. Then when done, it collapses, and you can put it away.

The case it’s stored in is aluminum, so it’s built to last, and overall it’s just easy to take out and put away. The advantage of this setup is you never need to worry about wrinkles, creases, or storage.

  • High quality green screen that is easy to take out and put away.
  • Premium build quality for long term use.
  • Solid, chroma friendly green color that works.
  • It’s one of the more expensive options on the list.
  • We wish this screen was a bit wider.

Neewer Chroma Key – The Small Choice

presentation board green screen

Are you looking for something small and simple? These Neewer Chroma Key Blue/Green backgrounds work pretty well. They come in at five by 6.5 feet on the smaller side but a bit bigger than you would think.

These are perfect to set up right behind your chair and ideal for using a smaller chair when teaching. They are also convenient for the on-the-go teacher. While not the easiest to fold up, it’s a small light item to put into your backpack once you get the hang of its it backpack .

Also, we like that it comes in blue. Green is a jarring color, so it’s nice you can get something more visually appealing for your home.

  • Fairly small, portable green screen.
  • Comes with it’s own storage bag or can fit into your backpack of choice.
  • Pairs well with a T stand backdrop.
  • You need to be careful not to wrinkle the muslin material when folding it up.

Yesker Video Studio – The Pro Option

presentation board green screen

For most online teachers, this is excessive. But this is an excellent choice for a professional green screen kit for online classes, Zoom, Manycam, and YouTube videos.

It’s 5.9 feet by 9.5 feet, making it a comprehensive and tall option. Perfect if you ever need to capture a full-body pose. Could you make sure you have enough space for this to fit?

Overall, this green screen works and is reliable for home use. Just make sure to get a stand for it as it’s just the cloth material.

  • Big choma key friendly screen that just works.
  • Comes in multiple colors: Black, white and green. No blue however.
  • Works fairly well without additional lighting.
  • No stand comes with this so you need to source your own.

Emart Photoshoot – The large, cheap choice

presentation board green screen

This is another basic greenscreen. It only comes in green and has no stand, but you get clips to mount it onto any bar. It’s the most budget option for the large green screens.

Throw this over a window or clamp it onto any stationary bar. The material is a bit cheap and wrinkly due to how it’s folded, but this is fine for a simple purpose like a virtual background for online teaching.

Again, it would be best to determine how best to hold this up in your home. You can also purchase various stands for use in your home office.

  • Large, cheap and works for casual use on a laptop or desktop.
  • Not for professional use obviously.

Chroma key paint – The DIY Solution

presentation board green screen

Did you know you can buy chroma key paint? We only once our community manager Brad bought some and paint a piece of cardboard.

Honestly, we’re pretty surprised by how effective this paint is. While there are better solutions for most (as we suggest getting a budget green screen), you can paint a wall or a piece of cardboard and setup a DIY green screen.

This is ideal for an actual school. Have a section of the computer room painted with this stuff so you can teach your students Photoshop and video editing skills.

You may want to paint a small section of your home or, as Brad did, some cardboard to have a consistent green screen effect.

  • No wrinkles, no fuss.
  • Ideal if you want a dedicated area to be your “greenscreen” area.
  • Works surprisingly well with any chroma key friendly software.
  • It’s paint, as such it is permanent which can be good or bad.

Non reflective green muslin cloth

When buying a green screen you’ll see the word “muslin” thrown around a lot. This is a specific type of material that is not reflective and easy to iron. The reasons you want this is because you need a consistent background.

Any wrinkles, creases or reflective light bouncing off the green screen will hamper the overall effect. Which is why paint and using cardboard is workable idea too.

Lighting for online teaching

If you do decide to tryout a green screen (and why not, their not that expensive) make sure you have decent lighting. Here at Teach and GO we have a dedicated guide as to the best lighting for video for online teachers.

Lighting is important when using a green screen because it helps with the separation of the subject from the background.

Consider getting a dedicated stand

With a green screen, a small option like Neewer circles can be attached to your chair. Other options are to tape it up or drape it over a window. If you want a professional solution, get a dedicated T shape stand specifically designed to hold up this sort of material.

presentation board green screen

While it does add a bit to the cost of the more budget green screens, it is a solution that will just work.

Best green screens for online teaching conclusion

That’s it for our guide on using a green screen with any chroma key-friendly software like Zoom or Manycam. Also, if you’re working with an online teaching company, you can contact them to see if their video effects work with a green screen.

It’s an overall great way to create an engaging and dynamic online class setting for young learners and it’s simple to setup. Make sure to checkout our guide on the best virtual backgrounds for online teachers too.

We bet most of you haven’t thought of implementing a green screen in your classroom, but they are a must-have for teachers! It’s absolutely the classroom tech tool you didn’t know you needed but will love having once you do. With a green screen, you have so many opportunities for allowing your kids to record videos with different backgrounds. Imagine letting them do a current events report, create a commercial, or teach other students about a piece of curriculum.

We wanted to see how teachers would use a green screen and incorporate it into their lessons. So, we sent them this STEM Green Screen Production Kit , which comes with one backdrop cloth (9’ x 60″), one USB webcam (720p HD w/ built-in microphone), and editing software. Then we let them take it from there! We sent no rules or instructions, but they came up with creative ways to let their students get in on the fun. Here are the results.

Green Screen

Creating a Classroom Commercial

Katie Chamberlin is a K-8 computer teacher in Arlington, Massachusetts. When her third grade students discovered they’d be using a green screen, they were beyond excited. A few students even jumped up and down! Once they settled, she tasked her students to create a “Day in the Life of a 3rd Grader” commercial.

“My students needed to think about how to communicate their daily schedule in a short video,” Chamberlin says. “I split students into pairs and each group was given a timeframe during the day (morning routines, lunch, recess, etc.).” The students then wrote out 15-second scripts to use when recording with the camera.

Chamberlin revealed that the camera was slick and transportable, and the entire kit was compact, making it perfect for teachers to store in the classroom. The included software was easy to download and both Windows and PC compatible.

A New Spin on a Reading Unit

presentation board green screen

John Cox, Allyson Caudill, and Ashley Blackley are a team that co-teach first and second grades in Raleigh, North Carolina. They decided to implement the green screen at the end of a reading unit. They tasked their students with a project involving the green screen. The goal was to create a presentation to demonstrate their understanding of the interconnectedness of our ecosystem, specifically in regard to pollination.

“Rather than sticking with the normal written report or poster board, we challenged students to type up their work before recording themselves with green screen technology,” they said. “We decided to use Google Classroom as the platform for students’ work because this was easy to input when it came to recording time.”

Their class consists of 23 second graders, with 18 students identified as English Language Learners. With that in mind, they provided structure and support for the assignment. They identified five sections to be recorded: Introduction to the plant, introduction to the pollinator, a description of the pollination process, connecting the pollinator to the plant, and a conclusion. The students drafted their work and then were able to use the provided scrolling feature to view the text they had written like a teleprompter.

Once the students started recording, they thought the process was simple and student-friendly. “The design and layout of the application are clearly designed with student interaction in mind.”

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Spaces

Choosing the best presentation display for your business’s meeting spaces can be overwhelming. With so many different options ranging from projectors all the way to 163” video wall displays, finding the best solution can take time.

This is why we’ve created this comprehensive guide to all types of presentation displays commonly used for meeting spaces in business settings. If you are ready for a great investment in your business, you might want to read our complete strategies for business solutions .

Modern meeting spaces are becoming much more than old-fashioned meeting rooms or conference rooms. They have become areas for teamwork, brainstorming, active collaboration, and other problem-solving activities. And thanks to evolving technology, this is all possible. With a variety of all-in-one solutions that fit your company’s needs, it’s possible to make an amazing investment for you and your team. It can be difficult to know where to start, however, which is why we have produced this guide.

Using presentation display systems such as projectors, wireless presentation displays, and interactive flat-panel displays are the best solutions to consider if you want to create a more collaborative and engaging meeting space.

Learning about the different usages for different types of displays, their pros, and their cons, will help you make an informed investment for your business.

Interactive Flat-Panel Displays (IFPD) for Collaborative and Huddle Meeting Spaces

Interactive flat-panel displays are large-format touchscreens displays. They are like wireless presentation displays but offer built-in software for high levels of collaboration and brainstorming. The advanced touchscreen interactivity is perfect for all types of meeting spaces.

Using interactive flat-panel displays creates more collaborative workspaces with improved convenience and higher-performing productivity. They are even great for huddle spaces. However, these displays can be more difficult to operate which might present a learning curve for those who are not as tech-savvy. Not to mention that some boards do not come with installed software, causing incompatibility issues later.

Interactive flat-panel displays (IFPDs) are perfect for meeting spaces of various sizes looking to make the upgrade. IFPDs are for those who want to connect not only in the office but also with remote coworkers. Thanks to the technology that allows for writing, editing, and other collaborative features, you can make any meeting more engaging and productive.

Collaborative workspaces are becoming more and more popular among meeting spaces and business organizations. They allow for brainstorming and idea creation. These devices also secure a smooth discussion without the hassle of finding previous notes or sharing files on the device itself.

ViewSonic’s interactive flat-panel displays, called ViewBoards, are perfect for those wanting to make the switch to IFPDs. And for any business use, we recommend our flagship ViewBoard: the IFP8670 .

For additional insights, you might want to discover IT World Canada’s rundown of the features offered on the ViewBoards we offer here at ViewSonic.

Huddle room solutions are becoming increasingly needed, too. They are great for building teamwork and bringing coworkers together for an effortless organizational spirit. But it can be difficult to keep record all your information easily. IFPDs still assure flexibility while providing secure ways of teamwork in a less formal environment.

If you are interested in working with your team on multiple devices, we recommend the IFP5550-3 . And if you want to scale down your collaborative display, the VBH100 is great for easy sharing among huddle rooms to get started.

High-performance is important for any collaborative space. Nobody wants to write on a board that lags or spend time trying to remember the correct word spelling. With a high-performing IFPD, you can be sure that regardless of usage, your board will retain clarity and prove its durability.

If you need a reliable, high-performing 4k touchscreen, explore IFP9850-4 bundle to solve the problem.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Meeting Space

Convenience is one of the hidden benefits of installing an IFPD. Outside of saving all work or notes done on the board, many of them use fewer cables for a neater appearance. You can simply walk into a room, plug in the device, and begin sharing with your team.

Even better, the ViewBoards use a single USB Type-C cable, which makes sharing even quicker. With quick 60W charging and touch pass-through, they greatly leverage the meeting time.

Factors to Consider

Learning curves can be difficult for some users. IFPDs might seem daunting, especially if you purchase the wrong one. They may not always be intuitive for the user and may even have functionalities you’ll never use. Nothing is worse than wasting half of a meeting just trying to turn on the display!

Thankfully, ViewBoards are easy to use and quick to learn. Forbes wrote an interesting article about when designers should choose intuitive vs. learned software systems. Making sure you choose a company that has your best interest in mind is vital.

Troubleshooting is another big challenge for those who may not be as tech-oriented. Some boards may require you to download certain software or use a certain browser, but it uses mysterious codes and keywords you’ve never seen before.

ViewSonic provides a solution for this. From troubleshooting FAQs , online training courses , and contact services , you never have to face another IFPD problem again.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Viewboard meeting

Incompatible software can be a huge issue if you’ve already made your purchase. Every IFPD has different requirements and compatibility specifications. For example, maybe some only connect with laptops while others allow for mobile devices. For complete and easy collaboration, it’s important to double-check specs and installed software.

So, if compatibility and versatile device usage are important for you, don’t worry! All our ViewBoards come with the myViewBoard software preinstalled.

Wireless Presentation Displays (WPDs) for Remote Meeting Spaces

Wireless presentation displays are hardware solutions for integrating multiple other devices into a single wireless system. Oftentimes these WPSs are external boxes that connect multiple devices, but standard wireless presentations have them built-in. This allows for an easy and cableless connection for all devices involved.

These devices pay for themselves with a lower total cost of ownership and allow for smarter and more collaborative meeting spaces. However actual device size and limitations on interactive features are something you should consider when creating the perfect meeting space solution.

Wireless presentation displays are wireless all-in-one presentation displays. These also allow for screen sharing and integrated multimedia display. They also do not require dongles or app installation and provide you with instant casting just by using opening a browser.

These are perfect for meeting spaces with high levels of sharing involved inside or outside. Wireless presentation displays, or WPD, for short, are also great for businesses that have remote participants, and even commercial screens. It is easy to connect single content to all displays for effective multi-group environments.

The total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is lower than that of projectors or the like. TCO refers to hidden costs such as maintenance or replacement parts. Unlike projectors, there is no need to replace lamps or do constant deep cleaning.

Typically for these devices, you install the device then you are good to go.

Smarter meeting spaces are key for efficient business and organization. With options for remote and group sharing, you don’t have to worry about making sure everyone gets the correct information on time. This can allow for better time management which in turn allows for more collaboration on ideas or projects.

Workplace communication can be hard to maintain. However, with WPDs you can easily display things like schedule changes, important information, announcements, and more on a single commercial display. You can also have options for remote control meaning you can update information from anywhere in your business or at home.

Career Addict offers a great list of reasons why you need to start using good workplace communication strategies in your meeting space. If this sounds perfect for your business, we recommend checking out CDE7530 to learn more about its features.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - commercial display

Mobility is one of the main pros of having a WPD. Despite the awesome cordless option, this also means you can easily move these displays to other areas of your business. You can either have them mounted to the wall, placed on a trolley, or have an e-poster system for even more mobility of the display.

If mobility is important for your business, we recommend checking out our wheeled stand for your display monitor.

And if you still aren’t convinced, check out Cision PR Newswire ’s news about our latest technology for large interactive display solution at ISE 2023.

Size may be an issue if you are working with limited space. In this case, you may consider using projectors. While sharing information and remote collaboration are possible with projectors, unfortunately, they are not recommended for brainstorming.

There are no touch-enabled screens or pen features for writing on the screen. If you feel like touch screens and more interactive meetings are needed for your conference room, refer back to our interactive flat panel displays to see if there is a better option for you!

Optimized Office Spaces

Projectors for Any Meeting Space

Projectors are optical output devices that project an image onto a surface. They can also be used with projector screens for the best image production, offer a great image production, fit both smaller spaces and large spaces, and are sometimes even portable!

Projectors are great solutions to meet the needs of all kinds of businesses. The best business projectors are suited for well-lit, smaller office spaces but have the capacity to even work in large venues. For companies that are starting up, or those who may need a budget-friendly solution, projectors are great. With options from ProAV power for large installations or portable for on-the-go, there is bound to be something for your business.

Price is always one of the most important factors to consider. Projectors are typically cheaper than other types of presentation displays. However, budget-friendly should not mean lower quality and bad functionality.

Standard throw, short throw, and ultra-short throw refer to how far away your projector needs to be to project the optimal picture. The standard throw is perfect for larger areas where space isn’t a concern. This means they are great for presentations that require movement and action. You won’t be cramped to a small section of the room.

Short throw and ultra-short throw projectors are perfect for areas with limited space. These projectors only require a few feet from the wall or screen to be effective. With crystal-clear imaging, you will not feel like you are missing out.

Knowing the difference between standard, short, and ultra-short throw projectors is critical for making sure your projector will be the best solution for your meeting space. Also, if space with solid imaging is a priority in your conference room, we recommend checking out this line of projectors.

High brightness and high resolution give the luxury of a wider choice of environment. Many old-school projectors are difficult to see in dark rooms or when placed directly in window light. Having high brightness and resolution allows for effortless presentations without the hassle of people having to move to better see the screen.

Portable projector features allow you to present in multiple locations. With a lightweight build and plug-and-play USB capability, using portable projectors is perfect for those always on the go or have multiple meeting spaces but not the budget for multiple projectors.

If you need a reliable performance solution for on-the-go, we recommend one of our portable projector .

Projection is not suitable for every environment . While many of our projectors allow for high-brightness and other features to ensure the best presentation, sometimes a room is just simply not suitable due to lighting.

In this case, it is important to make sure your meeting rooms have the right dimensions and suitable lighting environments.

If you feel that lighting may become an issue for your projector, consider purchasing a projector screen . While not always necessary, they can help enhance the image and give a clearer picture.

They are not touch-enabled, and this can hinder types of collaboration. While having solid projection can give your meeting space more structure, not having a touch-enabled display can mean using pens and paper for note-taking or brainstorming.

If you feel that interactive collaboration is a priority during your meetings, consider looking at other products like the IFPDs or even WPDs.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Projector meeting space

Replacement lamps need to be purchased to maintain your projector. Typically, it is suggested to change lamps every three years depending on your level of usage. This can become a hidden cost and burden for some if you do not do things like letting fans cool down or keeping the ventilation clear of heavy dust.

Direct View LED for Outside the Meeting Space

Videowall displays are often multi-monitor sets that consist of many different parts put together to create one very large screen. Because of this multi-monitor setup, you can often see the bezels between each screen.

Direct View LED displays are some of the most impressive displays offered at ViewSonic. While they are not interactive, they are great for commercial displays as well as for investing in something nice and beautiful for the business. They are also perfect for cost-effective, all-in-one video wall solutions, and large venue solutions.

Even larger vivid and high-quality imaging is possible with the ViewSonic Direct View LED. With an impressive 120% rec., 709 color accuracy, and an ultra-fast 3,840Hz refresh rate, the images produced are lifelike and just stunning.

Seamless integration and automated control are also possible for this device. Compatible with professional AV control systems such as Crestron , Extron , and AMX , it is easy to present any information or image that you want. Having this control makes using the ViewSonic Direct View LED simple and intuitive.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Direct View Led

Cost is quite high for these types of devices. Because of this, it may not be possible for every business to have the device. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives like projectors, IFPDs, and WPDs.

But, if you can afford it, they are certainly worth the investment. The ViewSonic Direct View LED is certain to wow anyone who walks into your business or meeting space.

Maintenance can be difficult for such a large piece of technology. With so much space to cover and the sheer size of the device can be intimidating for anyone looking to upkeep.

Thankfully, ViewSonic’s Direct View LED has an easy installation with a multi-panel modular design. This means that it only requires two people and takes roughly about 2 hours. With that, it is easy to troubleshoot potentially broken pieces or keep the technology clean.

Limited usability may be a factor to consider if you are working on a budget. Due to their large size, these kinds of devices are best used for commercial display or other display-only alternatives. It is not ideal to use these for highly important information sharing or for collaboration. However, its larger-than-life display capabilities can spice up any presentation used for professional settings and more.

GES has provided 9 ways to make your video walls work if you are still worried that cost may outweigh the potential benefits in your investment.

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Direct View LED in office

(NEW) Portable Monitors for One-on-One Meetings

The difference between a portable monitor and a normal monitor typically relates to the size and weight of the monitor. Sometimes it also relates to the features offered on the device. With a portable monitor, you can get all the benefits of a second screen but on the go!

Being creative and productive anywhere, you can also use it for one-on-one meetings. Some portable monitors are touch-enabled too, which can be very helpful to get your point across quickly.

But you should also be aware that some types of portable monitors may experience bad input lag. Not to mention, some of them really aren’t that portable due to their fragile design and heavyweight.

Portable monitors are becoming increasingly more popular among businesses and professional people. Modern meeting spaces are nowhere near what they used to be. Nearly everyone can be included in collaboration now. Thanks to this, businesses are saving a lot of time, and this leaves them with more opportunities for development in other areas.

One byproduct of this is the potential for more one-on-one meetings. With a portable monitor, it does not matter if the meeting was scheduled or not. You can quickly pull out your monitor and allow for quicker setup and easier screen sharing. Rather than just using a single laptop that can be difficult for both parties to see, you can use the portable monitor as a miniature display fit for almost any environment.

Touch-enabled portable monitors are awesome for one-on-one conferences. Being able to interact with notes, edits, and data can help more effectively get your point across. It is basically like having a mini IFPD in the palm of your hand.

Portability is in the name! Having portable options is severely undervalued when it comes to the workplace. Being able to quickly attach and present is important for one-on-one meetings where you may be working on an even stricter time schedule than usual. With impromptu meetings, maintaining professionalism and readiness is key.  Plus, so much modern work benefits from a second screen, it’s great to get the extra productivity without being tied to a desk.

Expanding creativity is possible by using a portable monitor. For example, ViewSonic’s portable monitors have an advanced in-cell 10-point capacitive touchscreen. This allows for an ultra-responsive touchscreen experience that reacts to a stylus, tap, pinch, swipe, and scribble. A quick and easy solution for productive brainstorming.

In case you weren’t convinced, here are 7 reasons why you need a portable monitor .

How to Choose a Presentation Display for Your Meeting Space - Portable monitor

Extra devices to carry can be burdensome. It also means more opportunities to break the device. Some portable monitors are even more fragile than a standard tablet.

However, ViewSonic offers an ultra-lightweight option for those worried about damage. Outside of durability, our portable monitor has a thickness of 6 in. and a weight of less than 2lbs.

Smaller screens can be a deal-breaker for some job fields. Even more so in a one-on-one conference. If both parties cannot see the screen, then you should opt for a bigger touchscreen monitor or a wireless presentation display if interactive features are required.

Input lag can be higher on portable monitors than on standard tablets. Because of this, connectivity between the computer and the portable monitor can be slow and have a low refresh rate. It is also possible that the monitor itself causes lag for your laptop devices as well.

ViewSonic ensures you none of these issues with USB-C Connectivity and the 10-point Touch capacitive. With USB-C connectivity, it is a dual-port that allows for rapid delivery of data, audio, video, and charging all over a single cable. These monitors can also be powered directly from a laptop as well.

If all of these features sound like the perfect solution for you, check out the VG1655 or the TD1655 to learn about all the specs and benefits.

Possible introduction of electronic visas in Krasnodar Krai

Possible introduction of electronic visas in Krasnodar Krai

According to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, the possibility of introducing electronic visas for foreign visitors of Krasnodar Krai, similar to those existing in the Kaliningrad region and on the territory of the Free Port of Vladivostok, is being considered now.

“Electronic visas are new for us, we are familiarizing with them. The government decided to introduce electronic visas on the territories of the Free Port of Vladivostok and the Kaliningrad Region as an experiment which starts soon. As soon as we learn this form of work and understand how much our foreign partners are ready to act on the basis of reciprocity, we will consider your appeal”, – Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the governor of the Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratiev.

The introduction of electronic visas in Krasnodar Krai aims to increase the inbound tourist flow and to attract foreign investors to the region. According to V. Kondratiev, Krasnodar region actively cooperates with foreign investors: there are about 300 enterprises with foreign capital which turnover is 9 billion dollars in the region. Krasnodar Krai is also a popular tourist region where about 15 million tourists annually rest, 6% of them are foreign citizens. This year, Krasnodar Krai also hosted a ministerial meeting with German Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel and a conference of partner cities of Russia and Germany.

According to the governor of the region, the introduction of electronic visas will help to create a favorable climate for attracting tourists and foreign partners. As noted Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Ministry will shortly hold a presentation of Krasnodar Krai which will attract additional investors and help strengthen relations with foreign partners in the region.
