She then landed her first starring role when the channel cast her as Alex Russo in the show Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007. The hit series ran for four seasons, until 2012, and won two Emmys for Outstanding Children’s Program.

News broke in January 2024 that Gomez will serve as an executive producer on a reboot of the series, this time focused on Alex’s brother. The actor will guest star in the pilot episode, due out later in the year on Disney Channel and Disney+.

Gomez will return for season four of the series on August 27, 2024.

New Movies: Emilia Peréz and Linda Ronstadt Biopic

In addition to her upcoming TV appearances on Only Murders In The Building and the Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff, Gomez is set to return to the silver screen in a couple of buzzworthy projects. She has a supporting role in Emilia Peréz , a Spanish-language film about a Mexican drug lord who transitions into a woman. The musical comedy premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to wide praise, with Gomez and her co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña , and Adriana Paz sharing the best actress award. A release date in the United States hasn’t yet been announced.

Elsewhere, Gomez is set to star as 11-time Grammy-winner Linda Ronstadt in a new biopic directed by David O. Russell. The movie is in the early stages of production.

Along with her acting, Gomez began building a music career by recording soundtrack songs in 2008 and 2009. That included three tunes for the soundtrack to her movie Another Cinderella Story , a song for the animated movie Tinker Bell , the single “One and the Same” for Princess Protection Program as a duet with co-star Demi Lovato , as well as four songs for the soundtrack to Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie .

Soon, Gomez moved on to original music as the lead singer of Selena Gomez & the Scene. The pop band, which had a contract with Hollywood Records, released three albums: Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011). Some of their popular songs included “Love You Like a Love Song,” “Who Says,” and “Naturally.” The group split up in 2012.

Solo Albums

Far from the end of her musical journey, Gomez embarked on a solo career the next year. She has released three studio albums, all of which have topped the Billboard 200 upon release, and a Spanish-language EP.

Her solo debut album released in August 2013. It featured two early hits for Gomez: “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down.” Both songs are now multiplatinum.

Revival went platinum six months after its October 2015 release. It also introduced a new, more adult side of Gomez, who had long been in the shadows of her Disney stardom. Songs included the platinum single “Kill Em With Kindness” and multiplatinum hits “Hands To Myself” and “Same Old Love.”

Gomez’s third studio album came in January 2020. Not reaching the same level of success as her sophomore album, Rare nonetheless included the singer’s first Billboard No. 1 song “Lose You To Love Me.”

Revelación (EP)

Her Spanish-language EP, released in March 2021, didn’t rise to the commercial success of her albums, but it captured critical acclaim, earning Gomez her first Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

Gomez has shared she is working on a new album, sharing photos from inside a recording studio in June 2023. She hasn’t announced its name or details about its release other than to say she “hopes” it will be in 2024 .

Gomez has regularly graced the Billboard Hot 100. Her first Top 10 hit, “Come & Get It,” came in April 2013. “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” “Good For You” featuring A$AP Rocky , “Same Old Love,” and “Hands To Myself” followed. Then, in November 2019, “Lose You To Love Me” soared to No. 1 ahead of its inclusion on her third album, Rare .

Other popular songs include 2017’s “Bad Liar,” “Fetish” featuring Gucci Mane, and “It Ain’t Me,” a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Kygo. She also teamed up with the mysterious Marshmello for ”Wolves.” In May 2018, Gomez released the track “Back to You” for Netflix’s teen suicide drama 13 Reasons Why .

More recently, Gomez has found success on collaboration singles, such as “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro, “Let Somebody Go” with Coldplay, and “Calm Down” with Rema. Her newest songs include “Single Soon,” which cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 after its August 2023 release, and “Love On.”

Billboard’s Woman of the Year

In November 2017, months after undergoing kidney transplant surgery, Gomez was named woman of the year at the annual Billboard Women in Music event. “I would like to thank my amazing team and my family because they stuck with me through some really hard times,” she told the crowd. “And I got to do a lot this year, even though I had a couple of other things to do.”

In early January 2014, it was reported that Gomez had been battling lupus—an autoimmune disease that can cause facial swelling, fatigue, headaches, and joint pain—for more than two years. In September 2017, the multitalented artist revealed that advancing symptoms of lupus had forced her to undergo a kidney transplant earlier in the year, with her roommate and friend Francia Raísa serving as the donor.

One month later, Gomez provided details of the experience with The Today show’s Savannah Guthrie in an NBC news interview: “She lived with me in this interesting time where my kidneys were just done,” Gomez recalled. “The thought of asking somebody to [donate] was really difficult for me. And she volunteered and did it… The fact that she was a match, I mean, that’s unbelievable.”

Thanks to Raísa, Gomez was able to quickly move to the operating room for the life-saving procedure. While there were additional complications during the operation, Gomez has recovered nicely, noting that there was a 3 to 5 percent chance of her lupus resurfacing.

In November 2017, Gomez was honored at the Lupus Research Alliance Annual Gala in New York City for helping to raise more than $500,000 toward research for the disease. During her speech, she recalled the moment doctors stressed to her the urgency of undergoing a transplant procedure. “It actually got to a point where it was life-or-death,” she said. “Thankfully, one of my best friends gave me her kidney, and it was the ultimate gift of life. And I am doing quite well now.”

The chart-topping artist, who previously spoke about her battles with anxiety and depression, revealed in an April 2020 interview with Miley Cyrus that she had been diagnosed as bipolar. “When I got to know more information, it actually helps me,” Gomez told her fellow former Disney star. “It doesn’t scare me once I know it.”

Gomez opened up even more about her mental health in the 2022 Apple TV+ documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me , revealing that she was initially skeptical about getting help. “I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t wanna go to the mental health hospital,” she says in the documentary. “I didn’t want to, but I didn’t want to be trapped in myself and my mind anymore. I thought my life was over. I thought, ‘This is what my life’s going to be like forever.’”

Choosing to make a documentary about something so personal was difficult. So was watching the final version. “It’s very hard for me to watch,” Gomez said in 2023 . “I will never watch it again, but I’m very proud of it.”

Outside of acting and music, Gomez has delved into business. In 2017, she teamed with Coach to launch the Selena Grace line of handbags and accessories, and the following year, the two sides collaborated again for a ready-to-wear collection.

September 2020 saw the launch of Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, her massively popular makeup line, and the Rare Impact Fund, its philanthropic partner dedicated to mental health. Each year, 1 percent of product sales are donated to the charitable venture; as of April 2024, Rare Impact Fund has raised more than $13 million . Bloomberg reported in July 2023 that the company sold $70 million worth of a liquid blush year to date and the company expected to triple its overall says year over year.

Additionally, Gomez has served as a spokesperson for Borden Milk, appearing in the organization’s advertising campaign and print ads. She also worked on a campaign that encouraged teenagers to learn more about the 2008 presidential candidates. A supporter of UNICEF, 17-year-old Gomez became one of the organization’s ambassadors in 2009 and works to help children around the world through her C.A.N. (Charity, Action, Now) initiative.

Gomez is currently dating music producer and songwriter Benny Blanco. She confirmed their relationship on social media in December 2023, stating they had been together for six months at that point. The pair have known each other for many years and have also worked together on songs such as 2015’s “Same Old Love,” 2019’s “I Can’t Get Enough” with J Balvin , and 2023’s “Single Soon.”

When they were just friends, Gomez once asked Blanco if he could set her up with someone he knew. He introduced her to a friend at a birthday party, and it was then the singer realized the person she had feelings for was actually Blanco.

Likewise, the music producer didn’t realize how deep his feelings were for Gomez. “I was the last one to know,” he said in an April 2024 interview with WSJ magazine . “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like ‘Wait, I’m in love.’”

Past Relationships: Justin Bieber and More

Gomez previously dated fellow musicians Nick Jonas , Zedd, and The Weeknd , as well as been romantically linked to other stars. But her most well-known relationship has been with pop star Justin Bieber .

She and Bieber first met in 2009 and eventually entered into an on- and off-again relationship. Even after their final breakup in early 2018, the romance still provides fodder for the celebrity gossip mill. In 2023, the internet was aroar over a social media drama between Gomez and Hailey Bieber, whom Justin married in September 2018.

Gomez has publicly feuded with her mother, Mandy Teefy. The two unfollowed each other on Instagram in December 2017, with some speculating it was because the singer had rekindled her romance with Bieber, though another source said the situation was more complicated than that. Teefy later told Gossip Cop that she wasn’t happy with her daughter dating Bieber, but said there was little she could do about it. “Selena can live her life however she wants as long as she is happy, safe and healthy,” she said.

According to Celebrity Net Worth , Gomez’s total fortune is estimated at around $800 million as of April 2024. This is primarily due to the success of Rare Beauty. The brand was reportedly on pace to generate at least $300 million in 2023 and has an estimated valuation between $1.2 billion and $2 billion .

‘Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me’ Review: An Honest Portrait of Stardom

Sincere and soul-baring, the documentary, directed by Alek Keshishian, captures Gomez’s challenges with mental illness, lupus and fame.

selena gomez biography movie

By Chris Azzopardi

“ My Mind & Me ,” a new documentary about Selena Gomez, doesn’t feel like a publicity device. Sincere and soul-baring, the film captures Gomez’s challenges with mental illness, lupus and fame. Watching it is like eavesdropping on a 95-minute therapy session with the artist.

It opens with Gomez out of sorts. “I have to stop living like this,” she says, as we jump from 2019 back to 2016. Backstage at one of her concerts, she cries, yearning to shed her child-star image and stand on her own as a solo artist. She fears she’s a disappointment.

The documentary doesn’t show her forgetting her past as much as confronting it. A road trip to Grand Prairie, Texas, where she reunites with old neighbors and visits her childhood home, is a turning point for Gomez. In contrast is a scene where she’s answering interviewers whose flippant questions leave her feeling, she says, like “a product.” She craves genuine connection, something fame hasn’t yet afforded her.

As a subject, Gomez is in the trustworthy hands of the veteran director Alek Keshishian. In 1991, he worked the same kind of magic on Madonna for “Truth or Dare.” Capturing an artist’s fearlessness, as he does in both films, isn’t just up to him, of course; like Madonna, Gomez is boldly unguarded. But “My Mind and Me” also looks outward, framing struggle as the human condition. An honest portrait study of stardom and mental illness, the film offers a hopeful catharsis: How, when we reveal our hardest truths, we can heal together.

Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me Rated R for language. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes. Watch on Apple TV+ .

Linda Ronstadt hasn't performed since 2009 due to a rare neurological disorder

After breaking through with "Different Drum" in 1967, Ronstadt – who is now 77 years old –became one of the most successful pop stars of her generation, sending eight songs to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, from 1974's "You're No Good" to 1980's "Hurt So Bad."

Her 1987 album, "Canciones de Mi Padre" became the biggest-selling non-English language album in U.S. history, going double platinum and earning a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album.

In 2009, Ronstadt gave her last performance. Two years later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer announced her retirement, and in 2012, she received a Parkinson's disease diagnosis that explained the loss of her ability to sing.

However, in 2019, Ronstadt learned that her condition was actually progressive supranuclear palsy , "a rare neurological disorder that affects body movements, walking and balance, and eye movements," according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke .

Selena Gomez Rare Beauty

  • How Selena Gomez Is Revolutionizing the Celebrity Beauty Business

Y ou would not think the most-followed woman on Instagram would be able to walk through one of New York City’s biggest tourist attractions unbothered. Yet here she is, strolling in a pair of cozy booties through Central Park with a travel mug of tea tucked in her arm, very nearly blending in. If not for the security guard and personal assistant trailing discreetly behind, Selena Gomez might be any other person out for fresh air on a drizzly May morning.

This is, to put it mildly, surprising. But she shrugs it off. “I don’t really have anything impressive going on at all times,” she deadpans, gesturing to her casual getup. “Or anytime, really.”

It’s a funny thing to hear from someone who has been on TV since she was 10 years old, found success as an actor and pop star, and is now the founder of a business reportedly worth $2 billion . Gomez, 31, is one of the most recognizable people in the world , and yet she’s right—as we meander down a pedestrian path and into the mud, most of the people around us seem not to notice her.

selena gomez biography movie

Gomez has cultivated an everywoman quality and a mastery of public vulnerability—hers is the kind of fame that comes from growing up alongside your fans, offering an example of what it’s like to fall in love, try things, and make mistakes. Her openness about her mental health has endeared her to millions of young people coping with the isolating experiences of anxiety , depression, and other disorders. And she has channeled all of that into her company, Rare Beauty , a rising player she bills as a beauty brand that, instead of selling an unattainable image, aims to help people feel good about themselves.

Mental health and makeup may not seem like an obvious pairing, but Gomez’s vision has paid off. Rare Beauty, not yet four years old, is a top seller at Sephora and available in 36 countries, according to the company. After launching in 2020, annual sales grew 100% from 2021 to 2022, and 200% the following year; they hit $400 million for the 12 months ending in May.

Rare Beauty’s products, from a liquid highlighter to a body and hair mist with names like Positive Light and Find Comfort, are designed to be inclusive in terms of shade range and easy-to-use packaging (crucial to Gomez herself, who takes a drug for lupus that can cause her hands to shake). Gomez says Rare began not with her ideas for specific makeup products but instead with her hope to support people struggling with their mental health. So she launched the company with a philanthropic arm, the Rare Impact Fund , with the goal of raising $100 million in the brand’s first 10 years, and pledged that 1% of all product sales would be funneled into the foundation. With $13 million raised to date, the Rare Impact Fund has given grants to 26 organizations across five continents working to improve mental health.

Gomez and her team are managing to sell millions of dollars worth of product while also promoting the idea that no one needs makeup. “I hope I don’t, and I hope Rare Beauty doesn’t, give off the vibe that you have to do anything,” she says. I ask what she makes of a common double standard, how people can be judged for leaving imperfections uncovered, but also deemed insecure if they wear too much makeup. She points out that she’s gone nearly barefaced today, wearing only some under-eye brightener. “I think it’s bullsh-t,” she says. “If you want my opinion on that.”

When you’re as famous as Gomez is, your personal life becomes global fodder. The Texas native broke out on Disney’s 2007–12 series Wizards of Waverly Place, went on to launch a music career, and built her résumé in film and TV with projects like Spring Breakers and 13 Reasons Why . All the while, interest in her relationships and inner life only grew. In 2016, she was in the middle of a worldwide tour for her album Revival when she suddenly pulled out, revealing she had been struggling with anxiety and depression as side effects from lupus, which in 2017 necessitated a kidney transplant . She says now that she’s “50-50” on whether she’ll ever go on a major tour again. “Nothing makes me happier than 90 minutes of being with my fans and just celebrating together,” she says. On the other hand, “It is very emotionally draining for me. And then you realize you’re just surrounded by a bunch of people that you’re paying.”

In April 2020, just months before she launched Rare Beauty, Gomez disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with bipolar disorder . She shared with Rolling Stone two years later that she had suffered from suicidal ideation and been to four treatment centers. Her 2022 documentary, My Mind and Me , offered a raw look at her mental health over a six-year period, filling in new details of a story that had been told in headlines.

Gomez often laments the impact of social media on her own health and encourages others to get offline. (She has declared at least five times since 2018 that she’s taking a break from Instagram , where her current follower count is 427 million.) An assistant maintained her accounts for four years. She’s back to posting most of her content herself now, which includes promo for Rare Beauty and her film and TV projects, but she tries not to linger on the apps. And she’s deliberate about who she chooses to spend her time with IRL. “It’s a cliché, but girls are mean,” she says. “It’s a very weird competition, being in the cool girls area—and then I’m just kind of like, there. I don’t know where I’m meant to belong.” Her best friends are a real estate agent, a producer, and a casting director, she says. “I love having levelheaded people around that couldn’t give two f-cks about what I do.”

Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, Selena Gomez, and Elyse Cohen speak onstage during Rare Beauty’s 3rd Annual Mental Health Summit on May 1, 2024, in New York City.

The importance of building meaningful relationships is something Gomez talks about a lot in her work with Rare Beauty. The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy , has become a frequent conversation partner with her at events, where they discuss his research on the loneliness epidemic. “It’s hard,” she says. “You could be in a crowd of people and still feel alone. I still deal with that.”

She’s a proponent of feeling your feelings. A younger friend of hers going through a breakup recently asked how anyone manages the pain of heartbreak. “You have to go through it. You can distract yourself and you can deny and deny all you want, but it’ll still be there,” Gomez advised. Covering it up is not the answer. “I just allow myself to have those days.”

I ask if having a partner is helpful when it comes to the big feelings we’re talking about, now that she’s openly sharing her relationship with producer and songwriter Benny Blanco—or if it’s irrelevant. “It’s a little irrelevant, only because he isn’t my only source of happiness,” Gomez says. “I was alone for five years, and I got really used to it. A lot of people are afraid of being alone and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone, and then I kind of accepted it. Then I came up with my plan, which was I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.” Enter Blanco, who Gomez says she’d first thought of as a friend—she even asked him if he knew anyone he could set her up with. But when he brought her to meet his friend at a birthday party, she realized she liked him. “It just happens when you least expect it,” she says.

Selena Romez Rare Beauty

Blanco recently told Howard Stern he wants to marry and have kids with Gomez. She laughs when I bring it up: “He can’t lie to save his life. If he’s asked a question, he’ll answer it.” She, on the other hand, has a lifetime of experience that has taught her to be more cautious. “I know what people can do to people I love. My own fans, who I adore and feel like have shaped who I am, will say the most hurtful things to me about how I live my life. But he has the strength in him that none of that noise fazes him. It’s really impressive, and I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon.”

For now, she’s trying to be present. Acting is one part of life that affords her the chance to be fully focused. Her film Emilia Perez premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May—she and her co-stars received the festival’s best actress award—and she’ll soon wrap the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building , a working environment she describes as feeling like home. ( Meryl Streep walks around the set barefoot, singing! Sitting with Steve Martin , Martin Short , Streep, and guest star Eugene Levy recently made Gomez want to cry for the way they made her feel like she belongs. “I’ll ask them, When did you stop caring about what people said?" she says. "And they’ll all just ring off these one liners that'll just kill me.")

And she is well. Her lupus is in remission, blood pressure is good, the kidney is working like it’s supposed to. I ask if she ever feels like it’s unfair—she’s 31 years old, living with bipolar and an incurable autoimmune disease, and knows what it’s like to spend weeks in the ICU. She responds with a story about a boy she met during a hospital visit when she was 18. He wouldn’t look her in the eye until she shared that she, too, suffered from lupus. “It was so sweet,” she says. “In a weird way, I turned the bad things into a good thing.”

Celebrity beauty brands abound, from Ariana Grande’s r.e.m. to Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs to Jennifer Lopez’s JLo Beauty. Creating a line of consumer products is an age-old way for entertainers to diversify their revenue streams in a fickle industry, but stamping an über-famous name on a lipstick is no longer enough to make consumers want to buy it. The formulas still have to be good, and there needs to be a reason for the brand to exist. Kylie Jenner repeatedly sold out of her Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits , with customers hoping to achieve the same plumped look she had. (She eventually disclosed that she has received filler .) Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty , the top-selling celebrity brand reportedly at roughly $600 million in annual sales, differentiated itself when it launched in 2017 by emphasizing its inclusive products for darker skin tones—a priority that aligned with Rihanna’s values .

Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

Gomez wants Rare Beauty to be a place where customers can go for affordable luxury products (compare Rare’s $30 foundation with Fenty’s $40 or Chantecaille’s $90 product, which went viral when the Euphoria makeup artist revealed she used it on the cast), but stay for a community of like-minded people who are comforted by the affirming ethos of the brand Gomez has created by emphasizing her own struggles. “That means a lot to the mental-health community, when someone is willing to be super honest,” says Rudi Berry , a beauty influencer who also posts about living with OCD. “When you deal with mental health issues, it can feel really isolating, like you’re the only one on earth going through it.”

Rare’s focus on mental health, and its investment in the cause through the Rare Impact Fund, not only fulfills its founder’s vision—it’s also good business. In a 2023 study of Gen Z and millennial consumers in the U.S., 80% said they were more likely to purchase from a brand based on its mission. Another 2023 study found that Gen Z wants brands to focus on mental health more than any other issue, including climate. “We’re at a really exciting turning point in the private sector, where brands can be leveraged in a powerful and meaningful way to contribute to society,” says Elyse Cohen, Rare Beauty’s executive vice president of social impact. As president of the Rare Impact Fund, Cohen and her team identify and vet potential grantees, from well-known organizations like the Trevor Project , a suicide-prevention and crisis-intervention organization for LGBTQ youth , to smaller, grassroots groups like the Mindful Life Project , a California nonprofit that places mental-health coaches in schools.

For Mindful Life founder JG Larochette, two $150,000 grants have meant the ability to expand full-time services from 28 schools in six cities to 50 schools in 13 cities. The exposure Larochette has received through partnering with the brand online and at events has opened more doors to more potential funding, which can be a struggle for lesser-known nonprofits. “There’s a lot to be said when Selena Gomez and her team put a stamp of approval on you,” he says. And his work with Rare Beauty has helped him understand the way his student population is interacting with makeup: “If you look at the social media, it’s about authenticity. It’s about creativity. It’s about expression. You’re beautiful as you are, and you can express yourself as you want.”

Selena Gomez Rare Beauty

Of all the parts of Rare Beauty, Gomez is primarily focused on the impact fund and product development. She relies on her managers, her lawyer, and the company’s executives to help run the business. “I will admit it overwhelms me sometimes. I have this weird thing in my head where if I focus on the numbers, I’ll lose whatever it is that made Rare Beauty Rare Beauty,” she says. “I never wanted it to be about making a lot of money and that’s it.”

But it is making a lot of money. In 2023, sales of its most popular product, a $23 liquid blush, reached $70 million. Earlier this year, rumors swirled when Bloomberg reported Gomez had brought on financial advisers to weigh a sale or IPO . On our walk, she’s quick to shut down the idea that she’s selling. “I don’t have any plans on that, genuinely,” she says, adding that she’s working on products for the next few years.

CEO Scott Friedman says it took a few years to build the company’s infrastructure while navigating a COVID-19-era launch and managing supply-chain issues; with things more settled, they recently retained investment banks to help envision the future. “We’re going to decide what’s the best way for us to become one of the largest, if not the largest, prestige beauty brands in the world, and it’s not a rush,” he says. “We are making our decisions to grow in the long run.”

Gomez says she gets more comments from strangers about Rare than anything else, and it means a lot that people enjoy the products for what they are, not because she made them. “That’s what makes me most proud,” she says. “When I’m able to have something like Rare or a single that people can relate to, I get so much joy when people say, ‘Hey, that helped me through a difficult time.’”

Selena Gomez Rare Beauty

This is what we’re talking about—the value of real connection with other people—when we run out of trail. Suddenly, we’re deposited on the street, the noise of midday Manhattan a smack in the face. The bubble has burst and Gomez is spotted by a man dressed in all black. He holds his phone up to her face and walks backward to match her stride as he films her, saying nothing.

“You don’t feel real sometimes,” Gomez says, continuing on. Half a block later, the guy is gone, and she’s back to observing the people on the street, rather than the other way around. New York is a place where a person can move freely, she notes. She can envision her 10-year-old sister being happy here, like the kids she sees walking themselves to school. “They’re completely fine on their own. They have an ownership—you have to own your life, you have to make a way for yourself,” Gomez says. “I kind of appreciate the realness.”

Selena Gomez cries as new movie earns massive praise at Cannes Film Festival

C annes, France - Selena Gomez broke down in tears after her new movie, Emilia Pérez, was met with a lengthy standing ovation at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival .

The anticipated flick debuted on Saturday, earning an 11-minute ovation that left Selena and her co-stars Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascón weeping, per Deadline .

The response marked the longest ovation of the festival so far.

Emilia Pérez stars Gascón as Manitas, the leader of a drug cartel on the run from law enforcement seeking gender-affirming surgery.

Saldana plays a lawyer named Rita, who offers to help Manitas, while Gomez stars as Manitas' wife.

Since touching down in Cannes on Friday, the 31-year-old Disney alum has graced the red carpet at several events promoting the film, attending each in show-stopping fashion.

Selena Gomez hits the red carpet to promote Emilia Pérez

For the big premiere, Gomez wowed in a black, off-the-shoulder gown featuring a draped white satin neckline.

The Rare Beauty founder then followed that up with a gorgeous red number, completed with rose-like adornments on the neckline, for Sunday's photocall.

Though Gomez has plenty of experience in the acting world, she's called her role in Emilia Peréz "one of the most challenging things" she has ever done.

While fans will have to wait a bit for the movie's theatrical release, Gomez is set to return to TV screens with season 4 of Only Murders in the Building this August.

She's also set to begin work on an upcoming biopic following music icon Linda Ronstadt, where she will take on the lead role.

The Buzziest Movie at Cannes Is a Trans Cartel Musical Starring Selena Gomez

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

This year’s Cannes Film Festival breakout has everything : Cartel drama! A gender-confirmation surgery song! Selena Gomez waxing poetic about cunnilingus!

French director Jacques Audiard’s unapologetically batshit new film Emilia Pérez is making waves following its premiere, sparking buzz that it could take home the Palme d’Or, Cannes’ most prestigious prize. If the film won, it would be the first movie starring a trans lead to win the award and join a small handful of other queer winners throughout the festival’s 78-year history, following Titane and Blue Is The Warmest Color .

Emilia Pérez follows its eponymous cartel boss (played by trans Spanish actress and telenovela star Karla Sofía Gascón) as she recruits burnt-out Mexico City lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to help her receive gender-affirming surgery and start a new, crime-free life. However, things grow more complicated when Emilia arranges to reunite with her estranged wife (Gomez) and their children by posing as a long-lost aunt. But that’s not even all: In the now-iconic words of Patti LuPone , “It’s a musical!”

According to Variety , Emilia Pérez received a nine-minute standing ovation at its premiere, marking the longest ovation of the 2024 festival thus far. Judging from initial reviews, the general consensus seems to be that, for all intents and purposes, Emilia Pérez ’s huge swings should not work: from its musical numbers to its genre-defying, grade-A melodrama. And yet somehow, per the critics able to get an early look, its nutso gambit ultimately comes together. At the time of writing, Emilia Pérez has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 12 reviews. It’s also near the top of the prestigious Screen Daily Jury Grid , which gives a snapshot of critical opinion at the festival.

The more enthusiastic responses likened Emilia Pérez to Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 cartel drama Sicario — which memorably features Emily Blunt beautifully hyperventilating — but with a gonzo twist. Vulture ’s Bilge Ebiri described it as “a cross between Mrs. Doubtfire and Sicario reimagined as a musical.” Calling Emilia Pérez “both exhilarating and exasperating,” Rolling Stone ’s David Fear warned viewers that they might want to “preemptively wear a neckbrace” due to the film’s tonal shifts. But hey, big swings are par for the course for a director who previously gave us a romantic drama featuring Marion Cotillard being attacked by a killer whale!

Some critics predicted healthy dollops of discourse about Emilia Pérez ’s handling of trans representation once the frenetic film escapes the festival circuit bubble, and IndieWire critic David Ehrlich, who admired the film but couldn’t recommend it, previewed what those criticisms might entail. Ehrlich lamented that Emilia Pérez lacked rich emotionality and also what he described as the crucial ingredient for a good movie musical: “actually good, memorable songs.” (Personally speaking, I’d argue that any musical that rhymes the words mammoplasty , vaginoplasty , and rhinoplasty is worthy of Oscar consideration. Move over, Billie Eilish!)

In addition to the Palme d’Or, Emilia Pérez is also eligible for the Queer Palm, a prize for selected LGBTQ+ films entered into the festival. If it won, the movie would follow in the footsteps of well-loved queer fare like Portrait of a Lady on Fire , Carol , and Pride , as well as controversial winners like Lukas Dhont’s 2018 drama Girl . Coincidentally, Dhont is presiding over this year’s Queer Palm jury, so we’ll see!

Regardless of how the Cannes award race shakes out, this year’s festival offers no shortage of truly out-there cinema. There’s the highly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa , which apparently rattled star Anya Taylor-Joy so badly that she vowed not to discuss it for another 20 years . If you’re more of a horror aficionado, might I interest you in the feminist body-swap flick The Substance , or Rumours , in which Cate Blanchett plays former German chancellor Angela Merkel escaping a horde of masturbating zombies? And of course, we can’t forget Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited passion project Megalopolis , in which your girlfriend Aubrey Plaza plays a femme fatale named Wow Platinum (like, for real).

With Emilia Pérez in the mix, it’s a good year to make Cannes weird and gay again!

Deadline understands that a number of key international territories are all close to being done, with CDC United Network also taking rights for Latin America. Pathé pre bought the title for French speaking territories coming into the festival, making it the only presale for the finished film before its Cannes premiere.

The domestic number alone is in the high seven figures, which we understand to be a record domestic number for a foreign-language film. The streamer clearly believes in the movie and it’s conceivable it gets an awards push later this year, especially given that Netflix’s upcoming film slate lacks some of the obvious awards contenders of recent years.

Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but was back at the buyers table in Cannes where they also picked up Glen Powell pre-sale title Monsanto in a deal pegged in the $34M range.

Emilia Pérez follows the story of Rita (Saldaña), an overqualified and undervalued lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas (Gascón) hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being.

Netflix is doing the deal for  Emilia Pérez with CAA Media Finance and The Veterans . Pathé will release the title in France on August 28.
