California hosts some of the largest varieties of graduate degrees in speech language pathology. Nearly 20 different programs have been accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) , meaning the universities and colleges that hold the designation have met high professional standards for preparing their graduates to enter the fields of pathology and audiology. The most popular degree in California is the Master of Speech Pathology, and there are multiple universities in California that have online MSLP programs .

In California, there are multiple campus-based SLP programs at all degree levels. You might also consider a featured online SLP program below that is currently taking applications for its program.

California Cities with SLP Degrees

There are 19 total Master's programs in speech-language pathology and two locations with a Doctorate in Audiology. Around half of the Master's degrees in speech pathology are offered through locations under the California State University umbrella, and the majority of those are in South Carolina, including Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Northridge. Some institutions do stretch up to the Bay Area and further north, like Chico.

Two of the major cities, San Francisco and San Diego, have an option to pursue a Master of Science or Arts in Speech-Language Pathology or a Doctorate in Audiology . For those looking at an alternative online option, CSU in Northridge offers the Master of Science in Communicative Disorders that is also accredited by the ASHA and takes 41 months to complete.

Online speech pathology programs in California

In depth review of top mslp programs in california, updated for 2024, san diego state university - master of arts in speech-language pathology.

The School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences only offers this program with, and students are administered into the program in the fall. The program usually takes two years to complete with enrollment in the fall and spring semesters, and one time during the summer. It is typical for students to enroll full-time with no or minimal work as there is no opportunity for part-time learning. All students have completed the program over the past four years and have passed the Praxis exam, which determines teachers' abilities they have learned in school.

At least 36 units are needed to complete the program, and there are two pathways to choose from - thesis or comprehensive exam. The latter has two attempts for students to pass. Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in all 600-level courses and higher. Up to six transfer credits are accepted. Examples of courses in the curriculum include Speech-Language Screening of Children, Research methods in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Dysphagia, and two levels of Acquired Neurogenic Language and Cognitive Disorders.

University of California, Long Beach - Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

The College of Health and Human Services offers the SLP program that features a clinical practicum and over 400 clinical hours working with patients directly through internship opportunities. Prerequisites needed in order to get into the program includes holding a Bachelor's degree with a major related to this field. For those with other backgrounds, they must have at least 30 units of coursework in communication disorders or SLP. 50 total credit hours are needed to complete this program, and it culminates with an option to complete a thesis or directed readings.

Many seminars are taken through this curriculum, which provides a detailed look at topics such as brain injury, literacy disorders for children and adults, motor speech disorders, autism, and dysphagia. In addition to the 14 total courses taken in the core curriculum, students must take two units of Clinical Methods in Speech-Language Pathology. Students are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.

University of the Pacific - Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

There is both a Master's degree and Doctorate in Audiology offered by that is offered by the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Science that is accredited by the ASHA. Students can choose from two length variations for the Master's degree. The first is a four-semester track that will supplement a student that already has received a Bachelor's degree in the field. The other is a six-semester option for those that have completed the degree in a different discipline. All students taking this program have passed the national Praxis examination.

Some courses will be split within a semester. For example, Adult Neurological Disorders, Research Methods, and Aural Rehabilitation are courses that are completed in either the first second eight weeks. These courses are taken in the second year for the 24-month path and in the first few semesters for the 15-month variation. The Doctorate of Audiology is also accelerated and takes three years to complete.

Slp licensure in california.

There are a few steps to follow in order to gain licensure in the state of California.

1. Complete a Master’s Program

Obtaining a Master’s degree is required, and all ASHA-accredited programs will have at least 60 credit hours and 300 hours of clinical practice that is supervised in order to determine if the graduate is able to treat patients effectively. Coursework should consist of various speech and motor disorders, clinical processes, speech therapy, and communication studies.

2. Gain Practical Professional Supervised Experience

After completing the degree, graduates must have 36 weeks of full-time professional experience, or 72 weeks of part-time, all of it being supervised. Holding a temporary license is required for the clinical fellowship, with students needing to pay a fee and proving that they have completed a higher education program with transcripts, report on clinical hours, and exam scores.

3. Praxis Examination

The national Praxis exam, which will test students on many subjects within speech-language pathology, is required for licensure in California and a score of 162 or higher is needed. Exams can be completed at dozens of test centers in the state, with some located at Bakersfield, Chico, Fresno, San Francisco, and San Diego.

There are hundreds of SLP job opportunities in the state of California. Many schools have contract opportunities for a speech-language pathologist.

Soliant Health’s Partnership with LA Schools

Soliant Health has a partnership with schools in the Los Angeles location for specialists that can diagnose students with speech disorders. They have many opportunities across the state, part time and full time, and the majority will work with the kindergarten through 8th grades. They must have a state license and have completed a Master’s program. In Grand Terrace, a contract position is offering 35 hours per week for the rest of the school year and these professionals will work with middle school students with autism.

Kaiser Permanente in Oakland

Kaiser Permanente is a health care organization that is headquartered in Oakland and serves most states along the West Coast and in the Northeast.

There are consistent speech-language pathologist opportunities with various duties, such as performing diagnostic tests to determine disorders among their patients, creates reports on their findings and refers specialists to their patients, and works with physicians to create an adequate treatment plan.

California speech pathology licensure requires a master’s in speech pathology as well as a supervised clinical practice that reaches a wide variety of age ranges and communication disorders. A California speech pathology license requires not only the practice but also work in a setting that is under the supervision of a current licensee.

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for California

According to ASHA, California speech pathology licensure requires the following before working in the state 1 :

  • Speech-language pathologists need a master’s degree (with 60 credit hours) in speech-language pathology from an educational institution approved by the Board.
  • Speech-language pathologists must complete a 300-hour supervised clinical practice of all ages and communication disorders. The practice must be under the direction of an educational institution approved by the Board.
  • Speech-language pathologists must provide evidence of completion of no less than 36 weeks of supervised professional full-time experience or 72 weeks of professional part-time experience. The practice must be under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist.
  • Speech-language pathologists must pass a Board-approved examination for license verification.

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for California

California speech-language pathology licensure exempts physicians; school personnel who are properly licensed and not practicing outside the school setting; interns or trainees; federal employees; and required professional experience temporary licensee. 1

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in California

A California speech therapy license can be extended to holders of the  American Speech-Language Hearing Association   Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) . Individuals who are licensed in other states and have worked for one year, but do not possess the ASHA CCC, are exempt from the required professional experience requirement, but they must provide proof of education, clinical practicum and passage of a national exam.

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in California

California allows a temporary license for a period of 6 months from the issued date to a speech-language pathologist who holds an unrestricted license from another state. Those who hold equivalent qualifications as determined by the Board and have submitted an application to the Board for a license are also allowed to hold a speech pathology license in California. A person who completes the required professional experience for licensure must obtain a temporary license to start working with clients. 1

Continuing Education for Speech-Language Pathologists in California

Speech-language pathologists are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education per license renewal period (two years) to maintain their California license. Dual licensees must complete 16 CE hours in each practiced discipline for a total of 32 hours per license renewal period. 1

Department of speech-language pathology.

Thank you for visiting California State University Long Beach’s (CSULB) Department of Speech-Language Pathology!  The Department of Speech-Language Pathology, in the College of Health and Human Services, has been granting undergraduate and graduate degrees since 1954. 

The Speech-Language Pathology Department provides coursework for students planning to pursue careers in speech‑language pathology or audiology. Students who successfully complete the required coursework may earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Speech‑Language Pathology. Students who earn a M.A. degree qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential from the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing, and the State of California Licensure in Speech-Language Pathology. Students pursuing a B.A. degree and completing an elective course may be eligible for State of California Licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) and SLPA certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

The department maintains a Speech and Language clinic to serve as a clinical and research laboratory on campus for both graduate and undergraduate students. Field placements are available in local hospitals, rehabilitation agencies, language/speech/hearing clinics, and public schools.

MS IN SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY

The University of Southern California launched the new Master of Science Program in Speech-Language Pathology in Fall 2021. Admissions for Fall 2024 are now closed.  Fall 2025 admissions will open in August 2024 .

Master of Science Degree in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences

The speech-language pathology curriculum is designed to train competent, culturally sensitive speech-language pathologists who can appreciate and understand the importance of research in clinical practice. In order to accomplish this goal, a multitude of academic and clinical experiences are provided to the students, under the direction of skilled instructors, clinical researchers and supervisors both on and off campus. The development of clinical skills requires academic knowledge, the ability to understand and engage in research, and a sensitivity to clients' needs, values and cultures.

The Master of Science (M.S.)  education program in Speech Language Pathology  {residential} at San Francisco State University is accredited by the  Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology  (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.

The SLHS department curriculum includes all academic and clinical experiences necessary for American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) certification in speech-language pathology, State of California Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential (SLPSC), and the State of California license to practice speech-language pathology. Students are required to complete all academic courses. The practice of speech-language pathology in the state of California requires a license issued by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee Medical Board of California. Exempted settings are public schools and federal facilities. The academic and clinical requirements for the state license are similar to those of ASHA requirements in speech-language pathology.

Academic courses totaling 35 units are required for the Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology. Clinical practica total 6 units. Internships totaling 14 units are based on the number of experiences necessary for the student to obtain the 375 clinical clock hours plus 25 observation hours required for ASHA certification and California state licensure. Students should plan to complete these requirements over a minimum of 5 full-time semesters, which includes a summer session.  The program is delivered in a face-to-face/residential modality, with modifications available to students in internship placements located outside of the San Francisco Bay Area (during the second year of the program).  

Students who wish to pursue a specialization may need to take up to 15 additional units, which will result in an additional one to two semesters of graduate work.  Please see our Specialized Training page for more information:  https://slhs.sfsu.edu/specialized-training .

Prepare for Essential Licensure and Certification

Once you complete your MS in SLP, you are eligible to apply for the Required Professional Experience for California state licensure, as well as the Clinical Fellowship Year, which is required to obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association . With these credentials, you are on your way to serving your community as a licensed speech-language pathologist.

In preparation for your career as a speech-language pathologist, learn about:

  • Speech-language pathology research design and methods and analysis within evidence-based practice.
  • Conducting diagnostic assessments, interpreting assessment findings and relaying test results to clients and their families.
  • Practicing in a clinical setting, including terminology, handling professional issues, reviewing files, building working relationships with clients, teaching and treatment techniques and more.
  • A wide range of language and communication disorders, such as acquired neurogenic cognitive communication disorders, motor speech disorders, autism spectrum disorders, voice and resonance disorders, pediatric language disorders and others.

Upon completion of the program, speech-language pathology students can: 

  • Apply understanding of communication and swallowing processes, disorders, differences and cultural correlates across the lifespan.
  • Apply principles and methods of prevention, assessment and intervention for people with communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Apply standards of ethical conduct, professionalism and relevant federal and state regulations pertaining to certification.
  • Apply research principles and evidence-based practice to the practice of speech-language pathology.
  • Apply professional standards of oral and written forms of communication skills sufficient for entry into clinical practice.
  • Describe how clinical practice is enhanced when speech-language pathologists pursue cultural and linguistic diversity, equity and access for all people with communication disorders. 
  • Describe how the Christian worldview informs the profession and practice of speech-language pathology.

To be considered eligible for the degree program, applicants must submit the following materials:

Career Outlook for Speech-Language Pathologists

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment opportunities for speech-language pathologists to experience rapid growth over the next decade, creating a high demand for speech therapists. It estimates SLP employment to increase by approximately 21 percent, equating to 14,000 job openings each year. A large aging population with changing health conditions who need SLPs’ services may contribute to the increased demand. 

On average, speech-language pathologists earn a median annual wage of $79,060. However, depending on the state of employment, level of experience and type of facility they work in, salaries can range from $51,310 to $125,560.

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program is conveniently offered in a hybrid format. The program includes one online lecture course and fieldwork.

Certificate Requirements

To earn your certificate, you must complete the following courses:

EXTX 650 Clinical Methods and Professional Ethics

This course will provide students with foundational knowledge in providing intervention to clients with disabilities/disorders under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist. Students will learn specific and professionally accepted methods for collecting data and writing progress reports and will learn general treatment methods to treat typical disorders, special populations, groups, and behaviorally challenged clients. Overview of multicultural and ethical considerations will be presented. An overview of scope of practice and professional ethics as guided by the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association’s Code of Ethics will be discussed.

EXTX 651 Fieldwork Experience

Pre-requisite: EXTX 650 Clinical Methods and Professional Ethics

This course will provide supervised clinical practice experience with children and adolescents with a variety of communicative disorders in an educational setting. It will provide opportunities for clinical application of principles learned from coursework and for carrying out speech- language pathology assistant responsibilities of observation, implementation of screening procedures, administration of treatment protocols, maintenance of clinical documentation, and computation of clinical data under the supervision of a licensed and/or credentialed speech-language pathologist.

Our Fieldwork program includes rolling start dates from mid-Fall into Spring semester, and while our goal is to have Fieldwork Placements completed within 3 -4 months, applicants are advised that a significant extension of this time may be needed.

Shubha Kashinath

Dr. Shubha Kashinath is an Associate Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, and the Department’s Continuing Education Administrator. She received an MS in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Arizona and a PhD in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from Florida State University. Dr. Kashinath’s research is focused on efficacy of communication interventions for individuals with autism, family-centered practices for children with disabilities, and development of innovative personnel preparation programs in speech language pathology. She has over 20 years of clinical experience serving families of young children with disabilities in Florida and California.

Anna Krajcin

Anna Krajcin received both her bachelor’s degree and MS in Communication Disorders from Missouri State University. She has extensive experience providing pediatric speech and language therapy to children with a variety of disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. Krajcin has provided hundreds of instructional workshops to professionals and families throughout the U.S and in Eastern Europe, where she has established three preschools in Bosnia that continue to provide speech, language, and behavior intervention to children. In 2016, she became a dually certified Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Jenny Rosenquist

Jenny Rosenquist joined Cal State East Bay in 2007 as a full-time Clinical Supervisor and intermittent lecturer. She received her BA and MA degrees in Communication Disorders from San Diego State University. After seven years of working with adults in various levels of rehabilitation, including outpatient, acute care, and skilled nursing, she spent the next nine years working with infants and toddlers with developmental delays and Autism Spectrum Disorders. During this time, she worked extensively with families and caregivers in the home environment and frequently supervised interns and clinical fellows in both the home and classroom. Her areas of interest include clinical supervision, Autism Spectrum Disorders, early childhood language, and family centered therapy, and she continues to provide speech therapy to both pediatric and adult clients in their homes.

SLP Supervisor requirements

In seeking a SLP to supervise your SLPA Fieldwork experience, please be sure to convey these primary requirements and ensure the SLP is willing to comply with Supervisory guidelines.

The SLPA Internship Supervisor must:

  • be licensed by the State of CA and have ASHA CCCs
  • have at least 2 years of professional SLP experience
  • have (or be willing to acquire before the completion of the internship) at least 6 hours of supervisory training/continuing education, as required by SLPAHB and ASHA
  • provide a minimum of 100 hours of supervised SLPA fieldwork experience: a minimum of 90 of these hours must be in direct client contact and 10 hours in indirect/supportive activities
  • provide a minimum of 10 weeks of supervised fieldwork experience to the SLPA Intern
  • remain on site for all direct contact provided by the SLPA Intern
  • directly supervise at least 50% of all direct client contact hours
  • supervise no more than 2 SLP or SLPA students at one time
  • be flexible in potential start dates throughout the academic year

Provide diagnosis and treatment of speech-language & hearing disorders and conditions purpose of disease management and rehabilitation as well as health promotion. Participate in activities and training to promote and attain regulatory compliance at the local, state and federal level

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

  • Evaluate patients/clients; develop a plan of care with associated goals including quantifiable speech and language outcome targets
  • Provide diagnosis, treatment, instruction and other speech and language services according to the scope of practice limitations per State statute
  • Participate in professional and facility enhancement programs and activities as required by the President/Vice-President and/or the Director of Clinical Services
  • Ensure proficient services through proper patient and equipment scheduling
  • Assist with and/or carry out routine cleaning, maintenance support operations of the clinic’s physical plant, patient care equipment and supplies in accordance with regulatory standards and EHS policies and procedures
  • Comply with the Facility’s Comprehensive Compliance Plan (CCP) which includes but is not limited to: Business & Clinical Operations, Environmental Health & Safety, HIPAA, Human Resources, and Code of Conduct as well as all facility policies and procedures and educational requirements associated the CCP
  • Comply with all local, state and federal regulations training and instruction requirements as well as any other standards that govern healthcare services provision
  • Carry out EHS duties as designated by policy and/or by the President/Vice-President and/or the Director of Clinical Services

Salary range: $93,000 – $100,000

CF pay rate: $38.50 per hour

Responsibilities

The Speech Language Pathologist will evaluate and treat children using discipline-specific assessment tools and therapy treatments, and will develop and monitor individualized goals and plans according to treatment plan.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited school or program. Current speech-language pathologist license issued by the state of California. Current American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) certification; Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP).
  • One year experience working with infants/young children with developmental delays including autism.
  • Knowledgeable in speech-language therapy, transdisciplinary early-intervention theories, and rehabilitation principles and practices.
  • Knowledgeable of evidence-based practices found to benefit children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Familiar with the field of early intervention.
  • Must relate well to children and their families.
  • Provide discipline-specific consultation/coaching to other direct-care staff and care givers.
  • Very good working knowledge in all applicable computer programs (Microsoft Office).
  • Complete necessary documentation and attend/assist in meetings as requested.
  • Valid CPR certification.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds repetitively. This position requires frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting in order to observe, assess and interact with participants.
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Ability to pass background/fingerprint clearance, health screenings and provide/obtain immunizations.
