Like most of its branding efforts at the time, these spots were conceived by Wieden+Kennedy, the Portland-based firm that had inaugurated Microsoft's questioning slogan. Although Microsoft professed complete satisfaction with this latest branding installment, in 1999 the company severed its ties with Wieden+Kennedy and instead hired McCann-Erickson (which owned Anderson & Lembke, which, in conjunction with Wieden+Kennedy, had created past ads for Microsoft). Advertising All industries rely on what Lutz calls "weasel words," those stock phrases ubiquitous in advertising. Among the most common weasel words include "new and improved." Advertisements are a huge part of our everyday lives; everywhere we go we see different types of ads which appeal to different target audiences differently. Advertising techniques have changed along the way, and this also influences the way companies/business sell to their customers, with the internet or online advertisements, we have seen more online business or e-commerce which has, in turn, forced businesses to do doorstep deliveries. This mostly is common in food and fashion industries.

Ethics can be defined as the moral principles that govern a person or group’s behavior. Code of ethics is used by companies, professional organizations and individuals, it contains some rules and principle which help them in making decisions between right and wrong.

Lately, there has been major controversy in the ethics of advertising. A good example is a Calvin Klein undergarment advertisement that appeared in Times Square. On a billboard was a photo of two children in underwear, standing on a sofa, smiling and playful. The advertisement was criticized as sexual and promoting pedophilia.

Some advertisements are very creative and fun; however, with the competitive nature of the industry, they are continuously becoming unethical in comparison to the advertisements in the 50’s. For example:

  • Television consumers today are exposed to many ads which interrupt attention to their most favorite programs.
  • Advertisements wrongly target vulnerable populations with a poor diet such as fast foods the likes of KFC or McDonald’s, hence lifestyle diseases such as obesity or diabetes at a very young age.
  • Some ads brainwash children who attend to them reducing the children into nagging and pestering towards parents in relation to advertised products.
  • Using obscene materials and content has been a great ethical disaster in advertising. Obscenity such as sex appeals has been used to attract viewership a practice that is not ideal for an ethical society.

An ethical ad is the one which does not lie, does not make any fake or false claims and is in the limit of decency. Nowadays advertisers only focus on their sales; they just want to attract customers and increase their sales. They present their ads in such a way that people start thinking that this is the best product as compared to others however most products are found to be fake, false and misleading customers.

Nevertheless, the positive side of advertisements cannot be ignored. Of course, advertising increases awareness about services and products of organizations without which the profitability and sale of these products would be difficult. In other words, demand is a product of advertising since it educates potential consumers about new market offers.

As you can see, there are a lot of angles one can approach an essay on advertising as has been highlighted above. My hope is that this has been an eye opener on the essay possibilities in this industry.

However, there are certain steps before creating an advertisement such as background research, deciding marketing strategies, determining the advertisement’s goal, determining target consumers, and the marketing environment that advertisement will be published on. Moreover, background research is the first step that advertising agencies apply before the campaign. Eventually, all of these variables create a budget for advertising. After all, brand managers should consider the benefits and advantages that advertising will bring to their products or services.

Background research is examining the brand’s history, product or service, brand’s positioning in the marketplace, consumers, and competitions. Background research is essential before starting a campaign, and also evaluates advertisement efficiency. Moreover, without background research, advertisements will be useless. In addition, background research includes finding the problems in the brand and product that which variables affect the sales. Therefore, background research creates a reasonable perspective for the brand and product.

In the 21st century, consumers are exposing lots of advertisements during the daytime, and that makes it hard to get consumer’s attention to the advertisements. Therefore, background research collects the necessary piece of information to get consumer attention to the advertisement. Background research analyzes the piece of information to help the achievement of the brand’s goals for advertising. Therefore, it analyzes both brand positioning and competition’s positioning to decide a strategy for the campaign. Furthermore, these kinds of analyses play a critical role in the decision-making process. Furthermore, a piece of analyzed information is showing the results of the marketplace, brand, and target audience, which helps in the decision-making process.

SWOT analysis is the first step after the background research. SWOT analysis is done for both the brand and the product, and it helps to see the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. According to the SWOT analysis and background research results, other decisions are started to make, such as advertising strategy, brief, creative process. Moreover, these decisions aim to achieve advertisement goals.

The marketing environment needs observation before starting the campaign because it is important to observe competitors’ advertising strategies and their market share. In this sense, advertising strategy is shaped with the marketing environment. Moreover, the marketplace has a competitive nature due to the changes in the marketing environment, and competition is increasing every year. Moreover, the reason for more competition in the marketplace is that products or services become similar, and consumer’s desires become different. Therefore, in the 21st century, the best way to keep up with the competition is by using new trends and doing remembered advertisements—moreover, successful background research advantages in the advertisement and also advantages in the competition.

Advertising brief is the document which confirms the understanding between the firm and the advertising agency, and it contains details of the campaign. The brief includes what brand requires from the agency to work on and the brand’s background, objective/purpose, target audience, positioning, promise/benefits, response, execution guidelines and tone of voice, and timing and budget. The brief is a guideline for answering the headlines. Therefore, a campaign is shaped shape with the brief and brief goes to the creative department for the advertisement.

The budget affects campaign continuity because selected marketing environments cost money. For example, publishing an advertisement in primetime needs more budget than publishing an outdoor advertisement. Therefore, the budget is critical for publishing an advertisement. The budget decides the media planning scheduling, such as pulse, flight, and continuity, and a large budget can use three strategies simultaneously. In this sense, using these strategies simultaneously creates an opportunity to respond to competition advertisements in a short time. However, the budget does not always determine the efficiency of the advertisement, and a limited budget can succeed in great efficiency in the advertisement campaign.

The company was come to establish when Bobby Murphy, Evan Spiegel, and Reggie Brown Poster have designed an application for video messaging being the students of Stanford University. The users of snapchat can share pictures and videos and according to the statistics of 2015, 200 million snaps and videos were sent using snapchat. The company exists in the social media networking industry where, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram LinkedIn, Pinterest and many other social media platforms are the rivals of Snapchat. The company was established in 2013 as the revenue earning company. The current revenue of the company is $5 million; however, it needs to improve by leading to $20 million with the help of information technology improvements.

The company has been developed with the long term vision or it can be called as long term plan that include six important aspects as follows:

The hacking issues of the company have resulted in the lack of trust among the users. The security issues are not limited to the users, but they are also impacting on the marketers and advertisers for relying on Snapchat for their marketing. Other than the security and hacking, the company also faces the lack of control over business activities and the management. The issues have already discussed above that the information of users at snapchat has hacked. The control of vendors on the IT management of snapchat is it’s another weakness. The overall information technology system is based on cloud computing that is served by Google that means vendors are the real management of its IT operations rather the company itself. The lack of trust among the users in terms of security is one of the major weaknesses for snapchat. The security issues are the major cause of the lack of trust that is resulted in avoidance of using application among the users. Another major and most arguable weakness of Snapchat is no consistent source of revenue. The business model of the company is undefined, improper and confusing (Edwards, 2013). It has no proper, reliable and long term advertising partners that are also resulted in the limited and inconsistent revenue of the company.

Opportunities

Snapchat has the following opportunities to grow with the use of Information technology: The first and the major opportunity for snapchat is the range of multiple advertising partners to enhance the revenue in the market. The company can potentially attract many advertisers and marketers with the improvements in the application and its security aspects. The awareness and desire of security among the users of social media is growing constantly that is the opportunity for Snapchat to enhance its information technology system and increase the users around the world.

8 Daily Newspapers Sue OpenAI and Microsoft Over A.I.

The suit, which accuses the tech companies of copyright infringement, adds to the fight over the online data used to power artificial intelligence.

Eight daily newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital sued OpenAI and Microsoft on Tuesday, accusing the tech companies of illegally using news articles to power their A.I. chatbots.

The publications — The New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The San Jose Mercury News, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register and The St. Paul Pioneer Press — filed the complaint in federal court in the U.S. Southern District of New York. All are owned by MediaNews Group or Tribune Publishing, subsidiaries of Alden, the country’s second-largest newspaper operator.

In the complaint, the publications accuse OpenAI and Microsoft of using millions of copyrighted articles without permission to train and feed their generative A.I. products, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The lawsuit does not demand specific monetary damages, but it asks for a jury trial and said the publishers were owed compensation from the use of the content.

The complaint said the chatbots regularly surfaced the entire text of articles behind subscription paywalls for users and often did not prominently link back to the source. This, it said, reduced the need for readers to pay subscriptions to support local newspapers and deprived the publishers of revenue both from subscriptions and from licensing their content elsewhere.

“We’ve spent billions of dollars gathering information and reporting news at our publications, and we can’t allow OpenAI and Microsoft to expand the Big Tech playbook of stealing our work to build their own businesses at our expense,” Frank Pine, the executive editor overseeing Alden’s newspapers, said in a statement.

An OpenAI spokeswoman said in a statement that the company was “not previously aware” of Alden’s concerns but was engaged in partnerships and conversations with many news organizations to explore opportunities.

“Along with our news partners, we see immense potential for A.I. tools like ChatGPT to deepen publishers’ relationships with readers and enhance the news experience,” she said.

A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.

The lawsuit adds to a fight over the use of data to power generative A.I. Online information, including articles, Wikipedia posts and other data, has increasingly become the lifeblood of the booming industry. A recent investigation by The New York Times found that numerous tech companies, in their push to keep pace, had ignored policies and debated skirting copyright law in an effort to obtain as much data as possible to train chatbots.

Publishers have paid attention to the use of their content. In December, The Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of using copyrighted articles to train chatbots that then competed with the paper as a source of news and information. Microsoft has sought to have parts of that lawsuit dismissed . It also argued that The Times had not shown actual harm and that the large language models that drive chatbots had not replaced the market for news articles. OpenAI has filed a similar argument.

Other publications have sought to make deals with the tech companies for compensation. The Financial Times, which is owned by the Japanese company Nikkei, said on Monday that it had reached a deal with OpenAI to allow it to use Financial Times content to train its AI chatbots. The Financial Times did not disclose the terms of the deal.

OpenAI has also struck agreements with Axel Springer, the German publishing giant that owns Business Insider and Politico; The Associated Press ; and Le Monde, the French news outlet.

The lawsuit from the Alden newspapers, filed by the law firm Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of copyright infringement, unfair competition by misappropriation and trademark dilution. The newspapers say the chatbots falsely credited the publications for inaccurate or misleading reporting, “tarnishing the newspapers’ reputations and spreading dangerous information.”

One example included ChatGPT’s response to a query about which infant lounger The Chicago Tribune recommended. ChatGPT, according to the complaint, responded that The Tribune recommended the Boppy Newborn Lounger, a product that was recalled after it was linked to infant deaths and that the newspaper had never recommended.

In a separate incident, an A.I. chatbot claimed that The Denver Post had published research indicating that smoking could potentially cure asthma, a complete fabrication, the complaint said.

“This issue is not just a business problem for a handful of newspapers or the newspaper industry at large,” the lawsuit said. “It is a critical issue for civic life in America.”
