Doctoral Programmes

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers structured doctoral programmes in addition to the individual doctorate. An intensive support aims at a degree within three years. Supplementary courses impart disciplinary as well as transferable skills. Especially young researchers benefit from manifold assistance: teamwork, curriculum, supervision by several professors and practical application constitute a framework for successful projects.

The Research Training Groups of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offer positions for doctoral candidates and post-docs. Ph.D. candidates in other structured programmes are self dependent for their funding. They may apply for a scholarship from one of the organizations for the promotion of young talent or for a scholarship directly the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Social conflicts, ecological needs and the digitalisation of the living environment: if current social developments are shaping the built environment of tomorrow, what challenges, problems and contradictions will this cause for housing? 

From autumn 2024, young researchers in Weimar and Frankfurt will conduct interdisciplinary research on the current housing situationin the the joint research training group (Graduiertenkolleg, GRK) " Gewohnter Wandel. Social Transformation and Spatial Materialisation of Housing" , funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Over the entire funding period of nine years, up to 36 doctoral theses on housing issues can be completed. >  more info

Research Training Group (DFG) Identity and Heritage

The research training group  »Identität und Erbe« started as a joint programm of the TU Berlin and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in October 2016 with all in all 12 doctoral positions (6 at each university). The first group (2016–2019) is still working on their doctorates in Weimar and Berlin. The following subjects are involved: architecture, architectural theory, history of building and urban development, fine arts, monument preservation, history of art and architecture, history of culture and media, landscape architecture, planning and architectural sociology, spatial planning and spatial research, urban planning.

The second funding period until 2025 has been approved. The interdisciplinary orientation of the GRK will be expanded in the new funding period to include archival science and the philosophy of science.

Research Training Group (DFG) Medienanthropologie

The Research Training Group is primarily aimed at doctoral students of media studies, cultural studies, film and theatre studies, literary studies, philosophy, sociology, ethnology or one of the neighbouring disciplines.

The programme started in April 2020 - the 2nd cohort starts in the summer semester 2023.

Doctoral Programme Art and Design

The degree course Art & Design offers a Ph.D.-degree created solely for Master and Diploma graduates of Art- and Design-Schools was the first of its kind in the German-speaking area since 2008. The graduation, supervised by two professors, one academic and one artist / designer, is concluded after a three-year curriculum. German and English knowledge is required. The final Ph.D.-thesis equally comprises of a scientific and an artistic/design part.

European Urban Studies (International Doctorate Programme)

From 2002 until 2020, the IPP for European Urban Studies was counted among the nationwide network of International PhD Programmes, which, within the framework of the programme "Doctorates at Universities in Germany (PHD)", were endorsed by the German Research Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service. Supported in years 2002 to 2007, the IPP European Urban Studies was the only IPP in Germany that was dedicated to urban research. It dealt with topics that are tested against such current models as the "European City," "Compact City," "Social City," "Net City," or "Zwischenstadt". The International Doctorate Programme “European Urban Studies” was then focusing on research on Urban Housing and Forms of Living with a focus on (multidimensional) housing policy, in the context of current societal challenges – such as climate change, social fragmentation, spatial disparity, cultural differentiation, immigration and the transformation of the real estate economy – and what these challenges imply for the cities of Europe.

UrbanHist - History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century

"UrbanHist − History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century" is a multidisciplinary research and training programme run by four universities in Germany, Spain, Slovakia and Sweden in cooperation with 13 partner-organizations and funded within the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action - Innovative Training Networks (ITN) as European Joint Doctorate (EJD).

It aims to develop and sustainably promote a joint understanding of 20th century urbanism in Europe. 15 Early Stage Researchers will be researching in 8 thematic fields, embedded into a network of high-profile academics and practitioners.

Kompetenzzentrum Medienanthropologie (KOMA)

Period:  April 2015 bis September 2019

Das aus Mitteln der ProExzellenz-Initiative des Freistaates Thüringen finanzierte Kompetenzzentrum Medienanthropologie soll eine innovative und interdisziplinäre Medienanthropologie vorantreiben, die die Erforschung der Medialität, der Medienbedingtheit und Medienverfasstheit menschlicher Daseinsvollzüge ins Zentrum stellt. Dabei ist das Konzept der Anthropomedialität forschungsleitend. Anthropomedialität beschreibt mit der Verschränkung von Menschen und Medien ein eigenständiges Drittes, das jeder Unterscheidung von Mensch und Medium als deren Ursprung vorausgeht.

Im Rahmen des Forschungsprogramms wurden 10 StipendiatInnen bei der Arbeit an ihrer Promotion unterstützt. Die Arbeit des Kompetenzzentrums mündete erfolgreich in der Beantragung eines DFG-Graduiertenkollegs zum Thema Medienanthropologie , das im April 2020 gestartet ist.

Urban and Regional Research (German-Argentinian Doctorate Training Group)

Duration: 2013- 2020

The German-Argentinian Doctorate Training Group "Urban and Regional Research" is a cooperation between the Institute for European Urban Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design and the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba /Argentinia.

The aim of this doctorate training group is to give a selective group of young researchers the opportunity and the academic support to achieve results in urban research that can enrich the academic debate in this field both in Europe and in Latin America. Doctorate students in the program receive bi-national academic advising and take part in a structured study programme. Successful completion of the programme results in the awarding of the academic title of Dr. phil or Dr. Ing in combination with a doctor title from the partner university. This doctorate training group is the first of its kind at a Thuringian university and one of few in Germany. A stipend funded by the Deutsch-Argentinischen Hochschulzentrum covers travel and living costs for the academic year abroad.

Doctoral studies

Doctoral Studies

In Architecture and Landscape, a doctorate can be obtained - depending on the subject area - with the titles Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.), Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.).   The doctoral studies are regulated in the current doctoral regulations of the faculty. The achievements for the award of the doctoral degree consist of a dissertation and an oral examination. The doctorate is proof of the ability to carry out in-depth independent scientific work. Requirement for admission to the doctorate is a relevant scientific degree. If you would like to join our Faculty of doctoral studies, please contact a professor who is thematically near to your topic as possible supervisor, in order then to submit an exposé. 

Admission as a doctoral student

The Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Sciences sets two dates per semester for the submission of applications for admission.

Applications for a doctorate / opening of the procedure:

In general: If no binding dates are given, the application is submitted to the dean's office 4 weeks before the respective faculty council meeting at which the application is to be accepted.

It is pointed out that the deadlines for admission as a doctoral candidate or for the opening of the doctoral procedures are an administrative recommendation and not an order. This recommendation is not mutually legally binding, but rather an administrative procedure which makes the inclusion of the matter on the agenda of the next faculty council meeting highly binding.

PhD Students

Viviana Torero studied architecture and urbanism in Lima and Mexico City. She completed her Master's degree with distinction from the National Autonomous University in Mexico. During her Master's studies, she participated in an academic research stay at the Technical School of Architecture of the University of Seville in Spain. Since October 2021, she has been working on her dissertation "After Style-Style and Meaning in Architecture" at the Department of Architectural Theory of the Institute of Architecture at the Technical University of Berlin as part of the DAAD doctoral scholarship.

Working title of the dissertation: "After Style-Style and Meaning in Architecture".

Ozan Soya studied architecture at the Izmir Institute of Technology and completed an M.Sc. degree in architectural history at Istanbul Technical University. His master's thesis "Modernism in Italian and Turkish Architectures during The Interwar Period" comparatively examined the interaction of modernism with the architectural traditions of Italy and Turkey in the period between the two world wars. He worked as an architect for architectural firms; lectured and ran architectural design studios at various schools of architecture. His PhD project at the TU Berlin deals with the evolution of tectonic thinking in contemporary architectural theory.

Working title of the dissertation: “Shifting Notions: A Critical Theory of Tectonic Thinking in Architecture”

Hu Fei studied architecture at the School of Architecture and Planning, Hunan University in China and completed the master's degree in architecture in 2020. His master's thesis "The Thought, Evolution, Criticism and Accumulation of Archigram" was awarded the Provincial Excellence in Master's Thesis. Since February 2023, he has been working on his doctoral project dealing with the themes of Neo-avant-gardes' progressive critiques on modern architecture in 1950-70s at the Department of Architectural Theory at the Institute of Architecture at Technische Universität Berlin as part of the CSC doctoral scholarship.

Zorica Međo received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in architecture from the University of Belgrade. She then worked in several international architectural offices in Serbia, Brazil, Qatar and Germany. Her work has been exhibited at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (Iaac) in Barcelona. She has taught at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Belgrade and at the Laboratory for Integrative Architecture (LIA) at the Technical University of Berlin. Zorica is currently working on her dissertation "Socio-Aesthetics of Porosity: Porous Spaces in Collective Housing" at the LIA and the Department of Architectural Theory at the TU Berlin, with the scholarship of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Scholarship for Young Scholars (PAS) of the TU Berlin. Her research examines the relationship between architecture and social life using the example of collective living spaces, starting from the concept of "porosity".

Working title of the dissertation:  "Socio-Aesthetics of Porosity: Porous Spaces in Collective Housing"

Christina Papadopoulou was born in Athens and graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Thessaly in Greece in 2013. She has worked in several international studios in Athens, London and Berlin, including 314 architecture studio, Divercity Architects, Mila Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH, gmp Architekten. She has been a member of the Berlin Chamber of Architects since 2021. She is a PhD candidate at the Department of Architectural Theory, Institute of Architecture, TU Berlin, where she is writing her dissertation under the supervision of Professor Jörg Gleiter. Her research examines the urban constellations of disturbance on the island of Syros and their transformation in the context of a humanitarian crisis as well as specific factors such as globalisation, climate change and state strategies for dealing with urbanity that are currently transforming our society. The history of the capital of the Cyclades, Syros, goes back at least 5,000 years, to the early Bronze Age of Cycladic civilisation, and entails a high degree of individuality of the inhabitants as well as very specific environmental conditions that have led to typological homogeneity. The search for a collective identity explores the notion of tourism as an evolutionary urban and communal impulse in this context of investigation. In 2022, Christina began her dissertation, which she is working on alongside her professional work as a senior architect in the office of gmp Architekten in Berlin.

Working title of the dissertation: "Tourism as impulse of urban and social transformation subtitle: Local frames of a global phenomenon".

Ronay Baris Civas (b.1996), completed his bachelor's degree in architecture at Politecnico di Milano in 2017. In 2020, he completed his master's degree at the same institute. He worked as an architect in Milan and Berlin on projects of various scales. During his education and working life, he was interested in historical approaches to sustainability and contemporary architectural theory. In the department of architectural theory at TU, his focus is on understanding and defining the relationships between contemporary architectural practice and theory through the historical development of the architectural profession.

Working title of the dissertation: "Critical Theory of Architectural Professionalism"

Julian Franke , born in 1991, is an architect and philosopher. After completing his bachelor's degree at Münster University of Applied Sciences and a further degree in philosophy at TU Berlin with a stay abroad at University College Cork in Ireland, Julian graduated with a Master of Science in Architecture from TU Berlin. In Berlin and Zurich, he was able to gain experience in international architectural offices and now focuses on both practical and theoretical content as a freelance architect and research assistant at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and as a doctoral student at the TU Berlin. In addition to developing innovative forms of housing and sustainable, future-oriented urban development, Julian deals with topics at the interface of architectural philosophy, anthropology, image theory and aesthetics. In his publications, he is particularly concerned with the perception of architecture and the associated role of imaginations, associations and interpretations of the respective user and recipient.

Doctorate at the Department of Architecture

The new doctoral regulations for the Department of Architecture at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for obtaining the doctoral degree in architecture (Dr.-Ing.) and in art history (Dr. phil.) were officially announced on 12.01.2017.

Dates of the doctoral committee

The doctoral committee of the Department of Architecture meets three times a year to discuss applications received. Applications for acceptances, re-acceptances, extensions and openings are to be submitted by April 1 and October 1 respectively.

Procedure of the doctoral process

Acceptance as doctoral candidate.

Compulsory registration at the Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)

Requirements for the registration at the KHYS:

• You have concluded a doctoral agreement with your first supervisor.
• You have a KIT account

For registration in Docata

The candidate concludes a doctoral agreement with the supervisor. The department receives a copy. Afterwards the candidate registers at the KHYS via Docata. The registration certificate must be enclosed with the application for acceptance.

The candidate submits an informal application to the Dean's Office with the required documents (see doctoral regulations). The doctoral committee examines the application and the candidate receives an official letter of acceptance. Acceptance as a doctoral candidate is initially for four years.

Doctoral procedure

When the doctoral candidate has completed his/her dissertation, he/she submits it in triplicate to the Dean's Office together with a written application and the required documents (see doctoral regulations).

Opening of the doctoral procedure

If all admission requirements are fulfilled, the doctoral procedure is opened. The doctoral candidate will be informed of this in writing and the referees will be asked for an expert opinion.

Oral examination

As soon as the expert opinions are available, a date is set for the oral examination.

Publication of the dissertation

According to the doctoral regulations, the thesis must be published within one year after the oral examination. Only after submission of the deposit copies to the KIT library the candidate is entitled to use the doctoral title.

This scholarship programme offers you the opportunity to continue your education in Germany with a postgraduate or continuing course of study in the field of architecture. The scholarships also promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you have gained a first university degree in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation and Building in Existing Contexts/Reconditioning of Old Buildings, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study programme.

What can be funded?

In this study programme, you can complete

• a Master's degree/postgraduate degree leading to a final qualification or
• a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification (not an undergraduate course)
• The study visit is essential for achievement of the scholarship objective,
• the visit does not take place in the home country, and
• it is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods cannot be funded, even partially.
• 120 CP at least 45 CP
• 90 CP at least 34 CP
• 60 CP at least 23 CP.

Duration of the funding

Master's degree programme:

• Between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of your chosen study programme or project
• Start: usually from 1st October of the following year after the application, or earlier if a German language course is taken prior to the study programme
• The scholarships are awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen study programme (up to a maximum of 24 months). Please state the entire period for which you wish to apply for funding in your application. For example, if you are planning a 2-year degree programme, you must directly indicate two years as the desired scholarship duration in your application. After the first year of study, your academic achievements will be assessed in a further funding procedure. If this shows that you will successfully complete your programme within a reasonable period of time, the scholarship will continue as planned.
• one academic year
• A monthly payment of 934 euros
• Travel allowance
• One-off study allowance
• Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
• Monthly rent subsidy
• Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family. Please also read our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 3.
• In the case of a disability or chronic illness: subsidy for additional costs which result from the disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other funding providers: Further information .
• Green Mobility Top Up (Support for climate-friendly travel) or partial reimbursement of carbon offset payments for air travel
• Payment of course fees for an online language course after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
• if necessary: German language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit in Germany; the DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project. Participation in a German language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language is German at the German host institution.
• Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period
• Reimbursement of the fee for a TestDaF or DSH test, which you can take either in your home country after you have received your Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany during your funding period.

After you have uploaded your application documents to the DAAD portal, the DAAD will first carry out a formal check. It will be checked whether the application requirements have been met and whether the application is complete. If this is the case, you will be asked to submit your work samples. A special DAAD committee made up of professors from German universities makes the final decision about scholarships in the field of architecture. The decision is based upon written applications and work samples which have to be submitted (see: www.daad.de/extrainfo ). Selection criteria

• the artistic qualification and artistic maturity, measured by study achievements and work samples
• the quality of the project as measured by the study plan and the letter of motivation

Further information

Admission to the University Confirmation of a scholarship does not automatically guarantee admission to one of the host universities. The respective university decides whether or not to offer scholarship holders a place. In most cases, applicants are required to take an entrance examination. Please find out in time about admission requirements (see also the following information under "Language skills") and application deadlines and interview dates at your chosen university, and bear in mind that these may be several months before the planned start of your studies or even before the DAAD awards the scholarship. We cannot cover the costs of the entrance examination. If an applicant is offered a scholarship by the DAAD but fails to be admitted to any of the universities indicated in the application, he/she may not make use of the scholarship that has already been awarded.

What requirements must be met?

Please check if the following criteria are fulfilled:

• As a rule, your university degree should not date back more than 6 years at the time of the application deadline. Please read our important information for scholarship applicants / Section A, point 2 .
• Your application cannot be considered, if you have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline.

Language skills

The language of instruction for study programmes in Germany is German. In international programmes, the language of instruction is English, or German and English. To apply for a place at the university , you must submit proof of your language skills (e.g. DSH or TestDaF if the language of instruction is German; e.g. TOEFL or IELTS if the language of instruction is English). Ask your chosen host university about requirements well in advance. For more information about requirements, check out our website . Applicants in the field of architecture for English-language degree programmes must already provide proof of language skills that meet the requirements of their chosen universities with their scholarship application . Please list the language level required by the universities of your choice in the form "Information on the desired degree programmes" (see "Application documents" in the tab "Application procedure"). To apply for admission to a German-language architecture degree programme, the universities generally expect very good German language skills (at least B2, usually C1). For German-language degree programmes, proof of German language skills according to the European Framework of Reference or Test-DaF at the level of a completed B1 must therefore be submitted. Applicants are also expected to acquire the level required by the universities on their own initiative. Application deadlines are updated at least once a year. In most cases, they are in the same period as the previous year. You can find the current dates here:

Application documents

Certificates (school leaving certificates are not necessary), proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. The DAAD reserves the right to request certified copies of the documents. 1. Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD portal:

• Online application form
• Full curriculum vitae in tabular form
• Statement about academic and personal reasons for the planned study project in Germany (letter of motivation; 1 - 3 pages). Please read our important information for scholarship applicants / Section B, point 1 .
• Form "Information about your preferred master programmes" . Please also complete and upload this form, if you have already been admitted to the desired degree programme.
• If available, letter of acceptance from the host university in Germany. If you have not yet received notification of admission at the time of application, you must submit this before the funding period begins. Please note that you yourself are responsible for ensuring that you apply for admission at the host university by the due date and that a Scholarship Award Letter from the DAAD only becomes valid if you are admitted to one of the desired host universities specified in your application.
• Confirmation of supervision from a university teacher of the host university in Germany
• A current Transcript of Records with individual grade(s), incl. explanation of grading system
• University degree certificate indicating final grade(s): the certificate must be subsequently submitted before the scholarship-supported study programme begins if studies have not been completed at the time of application.
• German or English translations of all documents submitted in the national language.
• A list of the designs/plans, which are going to be uploaded in the DAAD media database (see: www.daad.de/extrainfo ) with detailed information (size, date of creation, place, etc.)
• A declaration (form) that the designs/plans have been produced or created by you.
• Proof of German language skills of chosen study programmes in German according to the European Framework of Reference or TestDaF at the level of a completed B1 must be submitted. The respective language certificate should be no more than two years old.
• Proof of English language proficiency according to the requirements of chosen study programmes in English (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS). The respective language certificate should be no more than two years old.
• Other documents you think might be of relevance to your application (e.g. certificates of employment, proof of placements).
• If the review of your scholarship application shows that it meets the criteria of the scholarship announcement and is complete, you will receive a link to upload your work samples to the DAAD media database by 27 October at the latest. When you receive the link, please upload the work samples to the media database by 7 November CET at the latest.
• For formal requirements, read: "Additional Information for DAAD Study Scholarships in the Field of Architecture" at: www.daad.de/extrainfo ).

Submission of the application documents The application documents are submitted online via the DAAD portal. Please note that the access to the application portal only appears while the current application period is running. After the application deadline has expired, the portal for this programme is not available until the next application period.

• Your application is only valid if you submit all the required documents to the DAAD portal (see Item 1) and to the DAAD media database (see Item 2).
• The DAAD portal closes at 24.00 hrs. (CET or CEST) on the last application day. If possible, please do not send your application on the final date in case technical problems occur.
• Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered. You are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete.
• The application documents remain with the DAAD. Your personal data is saved by the DAAD in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act and with the EU Data Protection Regulation insofar as this data is needed to process the application.

Application Requirements

To apply for a Master degree in Architecture, applicants have to present an academic degree in a subject relevant to the specialization of the specific program. For some programs, this needs to be an academic degree in Architecture, but other programs also admit students who previously studied Design, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Interior Design or Cultural Studies. Furthermore, most programs only look to admit students who can prove their special aptitude by demonstrating they have the creative, technical and practical skills necessary to study Architecture. Therefore, most programs in Architecture require their applicants to hand in a portfolio with their previous work or demonstrate work experience. You can also expect to hand in standard certificates (first degree certificate and a transcript of records). These typically include your CV, a letter of motivation and sometimes letters of reference. Additionally, you will have to prove your English language abilities with a language certificate.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Students may study for a PhD degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning. An additional track in Architectural Technology is also available. This degree is administered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Therefore, students benefit from a dual affiliation with both schools.

The program is mainly geared towards individuals who wish to enter academic teaching and research careers. Students are afforded a high degree of flexibility in their studies, however areas of work are broadly organized into the following areas: the Theory and History of Architecture, Architectural Technology, the Theory and History of Landscape Architecture, and the Evolution of Cities and Regions. 

• Theory and History of Architecture:  

Students interested in this area typically study buildings, architectural texts, technologies, and their political, social, and cultural contexts through the early modern, modern, and contemporary eras. 

• Architectural Technology:  

Doctoral research in architectural technology at the GSD aims to advance current  knowledge in green building, for example, and will typically involve issues related to engineering, computation, and digital simulations. 

• Theory and History of Landscape Architecture : 

Students whose research focuses on the theory and history of landscape architecture typically investigate the  ways in which the  natural environment has been thought of, represented, and transformed, from the early modern to the contemporary period. 

• Evolution of Cities and Regions:

Students may be interested in the subject of cities  from a formal standpoint and/or develop an additional emphasis on various social, economic, technological, infrastructural, and ecological dimensions of urban life.

After graduation, PhD program alumni typically teach in design schools, or in history or history of art and architecture departments, landscape architecture and environmental studies departments, and urban studies and/or urban planning departments. Some alumni also work in the science, technology, and society domain on governmental and policy issues of particular relevance to their research.
