Who Is Ariana Grande?

Ariana Grande began performing onstage when she was a child. Her involvement in a Broadway play at age 15, followed by some small TV parts, helped her land the role of Cat on TV's Victorious . She followed that with the spinoff Sam & Cat and then dove headfirst into a chart-topping musical career, releasing five albums: Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014) , Dangerous Woman (2016), Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019).

Early Years

Grande was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida, to Edward Butera, a graphic designer, and Joan Grande, a businesswoman. She took to singing and acting at a young age and made her way onto the local theater scene before she was a teenager. Her first big break came in 2008 when the 15-year-old landed the role of Charlotte in the Broadway production of 13 , a play focusing on life growing up in New York City. The early role led to accolades, and Grande won a National Youth Theatre Association Award.

Two years later, she appeared in the musical Cuba Libre and had a small role on a TV show called The Battery’s Down .

Television Roles

Grande landed her breakout role in the Nickelodeon series Victorious . Victorious was set at a performing arts high school, and Grande was cast as a goofy aspiring singer-actress named Cat Valentine. While busy with the show, Grande nevertheless pursued a musical career, making her first appearance on a record with the Victorious soundtrack. And in 2011, Grande released the single "Put Your Hearts Up," a pop song aimed at the hearts of her young Victorious audience. The show's devoted fan base voted Victorious Favorite TV Show at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

When Victorious went off the air in 2012, Grande's character Cat Valentine survived. She went to star in the Nick spin-off Sam & Cat , co-starring iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy. Sam & Cat wasn’t on long when rumors began to swirl that Grande wasn’t particularly enjoying the experience, and the show came to an abrupt end after 35 episodes (2013-14).

Albums and Songs

'yours truly' & 'my everything', "bang bang," "one last time".

During the summer of 2014, Grande teamed up with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on the single “Bang Bang,” a track that debuted at No. 6 and peaked at No. 3 in the United States. The album spawned another hit single “One Last Time,” which reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Grande had three hit singles from My Everything on the Billboard chart at the same time.

'Dangerous Woman'

In 2015 Grande released Christmas & Chill , a holiday album, and the single "Focus," which debuted at number seven on the Billboard's Hot 100. In February 2016, she released her third album Dangerous Woman , and the title track debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 that March. She made music history with the track's success, becoming the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut in the Top 10. Dangerous Woman , which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, also features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne , Macy Gray and Future.

'Sweetener'

Grande returned to the charts in April 2018 with "No Tears Left to Cry," the catchy, upbeat response to the previous year's Manchester concert bombing. She followed in June with the dance track "The Light Is Coming," featuring Minaj; dropped the sultry "God Is a Woman" in mid-July; and delivered "Breathin" in September. The four releases were included in her highly anticipated album Sweetener, which debuted in mid-August, as was a track about her whirlwind romance with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson . The overall success of Sweetener led to her first Grammy win, for Best Pop Vocal Album, in February 2019.

'Thank U, Next'

Grande quickly returned to the studio to produce her fifth album, Thank U, Next . The title track hit airwaves in early November 2018, and another chart-topper, "7 Rings," arrived in January 2019. The album debuted in February to strong praise, alongside a new single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored."

In April 2019 the 25-year-old songstress demonstrated her drawing power by becoming the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella, as well as just the fourth woman to earn the honor. Her collaborations from around this time include "Rule the World," with 2 Chainz, "Monopoly," with Victoria Monét, and "Boyfriend," with Social House. Later that year Grande joined Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey for the single "Don't Call Me Angel," from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack.

Grande continued with the collaborations into 2020, her joint effort with Justin Bieber on "Stuck With U" hitting the Billboard top spot in May before she joined Lady Gaga for "Rain on Me" later in the month.

'Positions'

Her third album in just two years, Grande released positions in October 2020 to generally positive reviews.

Bombing at Dangerous Woman Tour

In 2017 Grande performed the title track for the soundtrack of the live action movie Beauty and the Beast . In February of that year, she began her Dangerous Woman tour across North America and then Europe. On May 22, 2017, tragedy struck after Grande finished a concert in Manchester, England and a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the exit of the concert hall, killing 22 people and wounding 116, including many young adults and children. "All acts of terrorism are cowardly... but this attack stands out for its appalling sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives," British Prime Minister Theresa May said after the attack.

The pop star responded to the horrific act on Twitter.

Less than a day after the attack, Grande suspended her Dangerous Woman tour. She returned to Manchester 13 days after the attack to perform a benefit concert on June 4 for the bombing victims, enlisting friends and fellow superstars to perform including Bieber, Cyrus, Katy Perry , Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin , and Pharrell Williams . Before the concert, Grande visited fans who had been injured in the attack, and she also offered 14,000 free tickets to people who had been at the May 22 concert.

Grande resumed her tour on June 7th in Paris, posting in Instagram : "First show back tonight. Thinking of our angels every step of the way. I love you with all my heart. Grateful for and incredibly proud of my band, dancers and entire crew. I love you. I love you."

The following year, the singer revealed that she was still feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder from the event. "It's hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss," she told British Vogue . "I don't think I'll ever know how to talk about it and not cry."

Among her many accolades, Grande has won six iHeartRadio Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and three American Music Awards. She has also earned 12 Grammy nominations and one win.

The pop diva returned to television with a guest appearance on Scream Queens in 2015, and she hit the big screen in a cameo appearance in Zoolander 2 in 2016. She also starred as Penny Pingleton, Tracy Turnblad's best friend, in NBC's Hairspray Live! in December 2016.

Grande has also become a popular host of Saturday Night Live , bringing her musical and acting talents to the show, including uncanny impersonations of fellow pop divas Britney Spears , Shakira , Rihanna , Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in a skit spoofing the streaming service Tidal.

In February 2020 Grande made a guest appearance on season 2 of Jim Carrey 's Showtime series Kidding .

Fragrances, Charities and Social Media

In addition to her musical and acting projects, Grande has launched two fragrances "Ari by Ariana Grande" and "Frankie by Ariana Grande" with her brother Frankie Grande.

When she is not performing, the pop superstar supports various charitable causes including Kids Who Care, a group she co-founded that raises money for charities in the South Florida region. She also has cultivated a massive social media presence on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram and Snapchat, and landed on Time magazine's list of "The 100 Most Influential People" in 2016.

Personal Life

Grande went public with her romance with her "The Way" collaborator Mac Miller in August 2016. The pair split in May 2018 after almost two years of dating. "I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us!" Grande posted on Instagram.

On June 11, 2018, People magazine confirmed that the singer was engaged to SNL 's Davidson, her boyfriend of several weeks. Subsequent attention focused on their affectionate social media posts directed at one another, though the couple found themselves in an awkward position when footage surfaced of Davidson making a joke about the Manchester concert bombing months earlier.

Grande was devastated by Miller's death from an accidental drug overdose in September 2018, a development that seemingly impacted her relationship with Davidson. By October 2018, the singer and comedian had split.

Grande went on to date Social House's Mikey Foster, before sparking a relationship with real estate agent Dalton Gomez. The pair got engaged in December 2020 and wed in May 2021.

Birth name: Ariana Grande-Butera Birthplace: Boca Raton, Florida June 26, 1993 – Present Years Active: 2008 – Present

Ariana Grande has had a profound influence on popular music since releasing her first album, Yours Truly , in 2013. Her strong vocal chops and work with producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds had critics initially defining her as following in the footsteps of singers like Mariah Carey, and Grande has mentioned Carey, Judy Garland, and Whitney Houston as early influences. But she’s diversified her creative output since releasing her debut, expanding her sonic identity beyond a contemporary Pop sound to include elements of R&B , Hip Hop , and Dance music.

Born in Boca Raton, Florida to a communications executive and a graphic designer, Grande’s earliest stage experience was in local theatre. In 2008, she was cast in the Broadway musical 13 , garnering critical acclaim and honors for her performance. Soon thereafter, she landed the role of Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television show Victorious and began pursuing a music career. While her first releases were positioned to appeal directly to a young teen audience that was familiar with her via Nickelodeon, Grande’s collaboration with Mac Miller on the single “The Way” in 2013 signaled a more mature musical direction.

While 2013’s Yours Truly was certainly a Pop-styled album, the influence of R&B was evident on that debut and was featured even more prominently on her sophomore effort, 2014’s My Everything . Grande’s second release boasted numerous collaborations, an ever-popular industry practice that served Grande well creatively and commercially. In contrast to her first album’s handful of collabs, more than half the tracks on My Everything featured Grande paired with a variety of artists, including the lead hit single “Problem,” which showcased Grande teaming up with Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea. Others guesting on the album included Zedd , Jessie J, BIG SEAN, Childish Gambino, The Weeknd, and A$AP Ferg.

2016’s Dangerous Woman maintained Grande’s stylistic balance of Pop and R&B and featured less collaborations. The album charted lower than her previous releases but featured notable and varied collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Macy Gray, and Future, introducing the Hip Hip style of Trap and dance floor House to her sonic stable. 2017 found Grande dueting with John Legend on the title song for the soundtrack to Disney’s live-action rendition of Beauty and the Beast .

The influence of Trap-style Hip Hop and Dance continued on 2018’s Sweetener , which Grande quickly followed with 2019’s Thank U, Next . Both albums topped the charts and highlighted Grande’s continued effort to broaden her sound via collaborations and a diverse roster of producers. Later in 2019, Grande teamed with Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus for the single “Don’t Call Me Angel” from the Charlie’s Angels movie.

Grande's second studio album, My Everything (2014), debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200, and spawned five singles, all of which were international successes. The lead single, " Problem ", peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and has been certified sextuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) in March 2016. In 2016, Grande released her third studio album Dangerous Woman , which charted at number two on the Billboard 200. The album spawned four singles including the Billboard Hot 100 top-tens " Dangerous Woman ", and " Side To Side ", peaking at numbers 8 and 4 respectively, while " Into You " peaked at 13 in the US. Her personal struggles influenced her trap-infused fourth and fifth studio albums, Sweetener (2018) and thank u, next (2019), which were both critical and commercial successes. The former won Grande a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, while the latter received five nominations, including Album of the Year. With the singles of Thank U, Next –" Thank U, Next , " 7 Rings ", and " Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored "–Grande became the first solo artist to occupy the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. In 2020, her collaborations "Stuck with U" with Justin Bieber and "Rain on Me" with Lady Gaga helped her break the record for most number-one debuts on the Hot 100, while the latter won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Grande's sixth studio album, Positions (2020), and its title track , debuted at number-one in the United States. In 2021, Grande was featured on the remix of The Weeknd 's " Save Your Tears ", and the song became her sixth number-one in the US. Grande released her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine on March 8, 2024. The album gave her two more Billboard Number 1's, being singles " Yes, And? " and " We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love) ", while all but two of the album tracks peaked in the top 50, the highest being " The Boy Is Mine " and " Supernatural ", peaking at numbers 16 and 17 respectively.

Since her debut in 2013, Grande has been certified for 85.5 million units in the U.S.—making her the eighth most RIAA-certified female artist of all time. Having amassed 90 billion consumed streams thus far, Grande is the most streamed female artist ever. She is also the most streamed female artist on Spotify and Apple Music. She has amassed 70 chart entries on the Billboard Hot 100—the fourth most entries for a female artist—including six number ones and 19 top-10 hits. Grande holds several Billboard Hot 100 chart records; she is the only artist to have five number-one debuts, to have their first five number one singles debut at the top spot, to have three number one-debuts in one calendar year, and to have all lead singles from each of her six studio albums debut in the top ten. In 2018, Billboard honored Grande as Woman of the Year . As of 2019, Grande has been the most followed woman on Instagram, with over 240 million followers.

[6] Grande then did musicals at her local theater, her first being Annie , before deciding to pursue mainly a music career at 13.

2009 – 2012: Breakthrough on Nickelodeon

March 14, 2010 - ariana make a wish

Grande in March 2010.

Grande was cast in the Nickelodeon television show Victorious along with 13 co-star Elizabeth Gillies in 2009. [7] In this sitcom, set in a performing arts high school, Grande played the "adorably dimwitted" Cat Valentine . [8] [7] She had to dye her hair red every other week for the role because the executive producer, Dan Schneider, did not want all the cast members to be brunettes, and the red hair was also a feature that the network felt would fit the personality of Cat. The show premiered in March 2010 to the second largest audience for a live-action series in Nickelodeon history with 5.7 million viewers. [9] [10] The role helped propel Grande to teen idol status, but she was more interested in a music career, stating that acting is "fun, but music has always been first and foremost with me." [11] Her character was compared to "Brittany Murphy's performance as the hapless Tai in Clueless " (1995) and described as being "very impressionable and easily swayed" but "generally sweet". [12] In 2010, she played the role of Miriam in the musical Cuba Libre , written and produced by songwriter Desmond Child.

After the first season of Victorious wrapped, Grande wanted to focus on her music career and began working on her debut album in August 2010. [13] To strengthen her vocal range, she began working with vocal coach Eric Vetro. [14] She made her first musical appearance on the track "Give It Up" on the soundtrack Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show in August 2011. While filming Victorious , Grande made several recordings of herself singing covers of songs by Adele, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and uploaded them to YouTube. [15] A friend of Monte Lipman, CEO of Republic Records , came across one of Grande's videos. Impressed by her vocals, he sent the links to Lipman, who signed her to a recording contract. [16] She released her first single, " Put Your Hearts Up ", in December 2011, which was recorded for a teen-oriented pop album that was not issued. [17] She later disowned the track for its bubblegum pop sound, saying that she had no interest in recording music of that genre. [17] The song was later certified gold by the RIAA . [18] Also in 2011, she voiced the fairy Princess Diaspro in 13 episodes of the Nickelodeon version of the Italian animated television series Winx Club , appeared in Greyson Chance 's music video for a song called "Unfriend You" from his album Hold On 'til the Night , portraying Chance's ex-girlfriend, and voiced the title role in the English dub of the Spanish-language animated film Snowflake, the White Gorilla . [19] [20]

On a second soundtrack for Victorious , Victorious 2.0 , released on June 5, 2012, as an extended play, Grande supplied vocals for a cover of " Don't You (Forget About Me) ". [21] After four seasons, Victorious was not renewed. [22] The finale aired in February 2013. The third and final Victorious soundtrack, Victorious 3.0 , was released on November 6, 2012, featuring Grande duetting with Victoria Justice in the song " L.A. Boyz ". [23] A music video of the song followed. [24] In December 2012, Grande collaborated on the single version of " Popular Song ", a duet with British singer and songwriter Mika. [25] She also starred as Snow White in a pantomime-style musical theatre production called A Snow White Christmas , together with Charlene Tilton and Neil Patrick Harris at the Pasadena Playhouse. [26] Grande played Amanda Benson in Swindle , a 2013 Nickelodeon film adaptation of the children's book of the same name. [20] [27]

Meanwhile, Nickelodeon created Sam & Cat , an iCarly and Victorious spin-off starring Jennette McCurdy and Grande. [28] Grande and McCurdy reprised their respective roles as Cat Valentine and Sam Puckett on the buddy sitcom, which paired the characters as roommates who form an after-school babysitting business. [29] The pilot aired on June 8, 2013, and the show was immediately picked up by the network. [30] The following month, Nickelodeon doubled Sam & Cat ' s original 20-episode order for season one, making it a 40-episode season. [31] Despite its success in the ratings, the series was canceled after 36 episodes. [32] The final episode aired on July 17, 2014. [33]

[46] Grande was later sued by Minder Music for copying the line "What we gotta do right here is go back, back in time" from the 1972 song "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch. [47] Sam Lansky of Time magazine called the song "breezy, catchy throwback soul [that] showed off her towering voice." [48] Following the release of the album, Billboard magazine ranked Grande at number four on their list of "Music's Hottest Minors 2013", an annual ranking of the most popular musicians under the age of 21. [49] The second single, " Baby I ", debuted at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it her second Top 40 hit. [50] The song also debuted at number six on the US Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, making Grande the only female music artist to debut two songs in the top 10 of the Hot Digital Songs chart during the year 2013. [51] The third single, " Right There ", featuring Detroit rapper Big Sean , [52] [53] debuted at number 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Grande recorded the duet " Almost Is Never Enough " with Nathan Sykes of The Wanted. [54] [55] At the 2013 American Music Awards , she won the award for New Artist of the Year. [56] [57] She released a four-song Christmas EP, Christmas Kisses in December 2013. [58] Christmas Kisses received critical praise for its "R&B spin" on the Christmas classics. [78]

On September 27, 2014, Grande was the musical performer on the season 40 premiere of NBC's Saturday Night Live , with Chris Pratt as the host. [88] It earned approximately $40 million and sold over 800,000 tickets. [89] Reviews of the tour performances generally praised Grande's vocals and ability to convey emotion in the songs but found the concerts to be over-produced: "[S]ome judicious editing would've elevated the evening from surprising to satisfying and possibly even shockingly good. As it is, Grande is so busy piling on the spectacle she neglects to highlight the one thing – those deceptively powerful pipes – setting her apart from her contemporaries." [90]

Grande was featured on Cashmere Cat 's song " Adore ", which was released in March during her Honeymoon Tour; a review in USA Today said: "Grande's towering vocals have never sounded better than on this offbeat R&B track."
