4. Those Laps Can Strengthen Your Lungs

If you’ve been diagnosed with a lung condition like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, you might like hearing that the lungs are one of the biggest benefactors from swimming, according to Swim England’s report.

“Swimming trains the muscles involved with respiration, meaning it can enhance lung volume and aid breathing technique,” says Power, who wasn’t involved with the Swim England report. Plus, if you have asthma, the pool provides an ideal exercise setting, as it’s humid, warm, and, usually, a low-pollen environment.

But if you have a lung or other condition that could interfere with your ability to exercise, check with your doctor before starting a swim routine.

5. Swimming May Boost Brain Power

Exercise in general has been associated with improving cognition, but when researchers studied the specific benefits of swimming on cognition, they found a unique benefit.

In one small study from the journal Physiological Reports , participants who did a 20-minute, moderate-intensity swim processed visual information and responded faster on cognitive tests conducted right before and immediately after their swim. Although it’s a small effect (about 4 percent on average), the fact that the workout made a measurable difference after just one occasion is notable, Dr. Cotter says. Another study published in Physiological Reports linked swimming with improved short- and long-term memory in mice.

Both studies are somewhat preliminary (given the size and that the second one was an animal study), but the researchers of both concluded that the data suggest further study is warranted.

6. The Water Workout May Put You in a Better Mood

All exercise can be a mood booster. But a study published in 2003 in the Journal of Psychology found that a single session of swimming improved mood even more than a single session of aerobic dance (similar improvements in mood were linked with yoga and Feldenkrais movement, a body awareness practice, in the population of women studied). “Due to the release of happiness chemicals in the brain, specifically endorphins dopamine and serotonin, regular swimming can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and combat depression,” Radermacher says.

7. Swimming May Help You Sleep

Improved sleep is a perk of sticking to just about any exercise routine. And that includes swimming. “Exercise helps reset your body’s internal clock and restores your natural circadian rhythm,” Radermacher says.

According to the National Sleep Foundation's 2013 Sleep in America poll (PDF), which focused on sleep and exercise, people who participated in aerobic exercise reported sleeping better; 76 to 83 percent of those who did light, moderate, or vigorous exercise reported very good or fairly good sleep quality versus 56 percent of non-exercisers. In the survey, swimming was categorized as a type of vigorous aerobic activity. What’s more, exercisers spent more time in restorative deep sleep.

8. For People With Chronic Pain, Swimming May Help

Conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia often come with reduced mobility and in many cases, short- or long-term pain. This is where swimming can help. “A range of aquatic activities (including swimming) have been shown to help people with musculoskeletal conditions improve physical function and quality of life,” Power says.

One study showed that in people with osteoarthritis , a three-month swimming program (participants swam for 45 minutes three days per week) led to less joint pain and stiffness, as well as improved muscle strength.

The buoyancy of the water adds resistance (making water workouts challenging), but low-impact at the same time, Dr. Krabak says. And that’s ideal if you have stiffness or joint pain. If you do have fibromyalgia or more severe pain, consider aquatic physical therapy to help get you started and conditioned for possible lap swimming.

9. Swimming Is Good for Bone Health

Roughly 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass, which increases their risk for osteoporosis, according to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (PDF) — and among individuals 50 and up, 1 in 2 women will break a bone because of osteoporosis versus 1 in 4 men.

While resistance training and high-impact activities have always been the gold standard for improving bone density, swimming (if you do enough of it) may also help. A review published in 2020 in BioMed Research International found that three to six hours of swimming per week improved bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, especially among long-term swimmers. Though it's worth noting that there was no benefit to bone health in those who small less than three hours per week.

The focus of the current review is on such a sport as swimming, its health benefits, and its effects on physical and psychological well-being. Undoubtedly, this activity is sufficiently enjoyable, but its ability to promote well-being and physical fitness should likewise be evaluated.

To start, swimming has been proven to provide cognitive advantages. It raises brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) production, which helps generate new brain cells and repairs damaged ones (Asp, 2022). Furthermore, studies have discovered that swimming can enhance blood flow to the brain, enhancing cognitive function and memory retention. Moreover, swimming is beneficial for the effective functioning of the human cardiovascular system. It is an effective method to reduce the risk of hypertension and heart disease (House et al., 2023). The effect of swimming on the supply of oxygen to muscle tissues and blood flow helps to lower blood pressure (Bușe & Georgescu, 2023).

Swimming is a minimally traumatic exercise that most people can do if they follow safe practices. It can help improve respiratory health and lung capacity parallel to strengthening the muscular frame. It enables deep breathing, which aids in increasing lung capacity and improving overall respiratory health (Hadiansyah et al., 2022). It is also excellent for mental health: its rhythmic and repetitive nature can have a calming effect on the mind, lowering stress and anxiety levels (“Swimming – health benefits,” n.d.). For people who enjoy swimming, it can stimulate the production of endorphins associated with feelings of happiness and increased mood. In addition, for those with diabetes, swimming is a suitable form of exercise, improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar levels. This fact makes it a worthy option to consider when treating diabetes symptoms. In addition, water sports are ways to develop flexibility and muscle strength because of the involvement of almost all major muscle groups without increasing stress on the joints.

To summarize, swimming and other water sports are effective ways to improve both the body’s physical capabilities and psychological condition if a person has a positive attitude toward the process. Many benefits can be listed: reduced risk of hypertension and heart disease, improved brain and nervous system function, lung development, fortified mental health, increased muscle strength and flexibility of the body and ligaments. Thus, adding this activity to a sporting schedule can give a person access to all these factors contributing to a healthy and long life.

Swimming is a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Recreational swimming can provide you with a low-impact workout and it's a good way to relax and feel good.

Common swimming styles in recreational swimming are:

Some people who enjoy swimming want to take it to a competitive level. This can provide the health benefits of a vigorous workout as well as the fun and thrill of competition.

The distances swum in competition swimming can vary from 50 metres in a pool to much further distances in open water.

Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water. Swimming is a good all-round activity because it:

  • builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness
  • helps you maintain a healthy weight , healthy heart and lungs
  • tones muscles and builds strength

Getting started in swimming is easy. It is a sport for all age groups, skill and fitness levels. Before you get started, you will need to purchase a pair of swimmers and some goggles.

There are public pools throughout Australia that are open to everyone. Entry to public pools is inexpensive and many aquatic centres offer swimming lessons for people of all ages, as well as training and exercise groups.

Water-based exercise can help people with arthritis improve the use of their arthritic joints, decrease pain, and not worsen symptoms. People with rheumatoid arthritis have shown more health improvements after participating in hydrotherapy (exercising in warm water) than with other activities.

For people with fibromyalgia, swimming can decrease anxiety, and exercise therapy in warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Parents of children with developmental disabilities find that recreational activities, such as swimming, improve family connections.

Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving their quality of life and decreasing disability. It can also improve or help maintain the bone health of post-menopausal women.

Staying healthy and safe while you swim

To stay healthy and safe while you swim, it is important to understand how to prevent illness and injury when you are in or around the water.

You can get swimming-related illnesses if you swallow, have contact with, or breathe in mists of water contaminated with germs. The most common swimming-related illnesses are diarrhea , skin rashes , swimmer's ear , pneumonia or flu-like illness , and irritation of the eyes or respiratory tract .

How to Swim

To keep the body afloat, one has to move the arms and legs in a special process. The water has to be pushed continuously downwards and backwards with the limbs. A little boy can easily learn to swim with a little effort. But if an adult wants to learn to swim, it seems difficult to him. But swimming is a laborious task. Just a few minutes of continuous swimming makes even a strong man tired. Nowadays swimming has been adopted as an international sport.

How to Learn Swimming

Childhood practice is most effective in learning to swim. Since then the body remains light and agile. A father leaves his child upside down in the water and supports him with his hands on his chest and abdomen and he then starts moving his arms and legs randomly. If he tries to do this for a while, he will understand how to move his limbs to stay afloat.

If you want to learn to swim on your own, you can take the help of a piece of a banana plant. Yes, a banana tree is your best teacher when it comes to swimming. Alternatively, you can take the help of inflatable tires, tubes, or other floating things. Always practice swimming in shallow water to avoid danger. Practice regularly for a few days, you will see that swimming is not a difficult thing at all.

Health Benefits of Swimming

Swimming is a great exercise. Because when you move your limbs to keep your body afloat on the water, every limb and muscle in the body gets tense. It increases your heart rate and blood circulation and gives you cardiovascular fitness. Regular swimming keeps your weight under control and makes your heart and lungs healthier. Swimming competitions are now a widespread trend. It is a popular event of the Olympic Games. Some people become famous every year for their quickness and skill in swimming. Our Bengali hero Brazen Das (1928-1996) was the first South Asian swimmer to set a world record by crossing the English Channel in 1958. In all countries of the world, the great achievement of swimmers is highly praised by their nation. They are awarded medals and prizes.

Learning to swim is almost as habitual and urgent as learning to walk to survive. Swimming is the most effective form of exercise, sometimes it saves lives. Therefore, swimming capability is important for everyone, young and old. In particular, every family should help and encourage children to learn how to swim.

Since swimming increases heartbeat and blood circulation and helps to stretch muscles. In swimming, you can easily exercise a particular limb if you like. For example, if you just want to do hand exercises, lie down on a long floating board and keep moving your hands quickly in the water on both sides. Similarly, only leg exercises can also be done.

Although swimming is an excellent exercise, it has some limitations. If your goal is to build strong and attractive muscles, then you will not get much benefit from swimming. In that case, you have to choose another way of exercise. Similarly, even if the goal is to strengthen the bones, you need to pay attention to any other form of exercise.

But despite these few limitations, there is no doubt that swimming is an excellent exercise. Swimming exercises all the organs of the body, it increases the functioning of your heart and lungs.

One such activity is swimming. Everyone should be aware of swimming. Swimming is a kind of exercise which is performed in water.  It helps people to float on the water. Usually heavy objects drown in water. But swimming helps to float in water. It enables us to get the feel of water.

We are humans. We need to learn how to swim. There are animals who are natural swimmers. They don’t need to learn swimming. They have limbs. The animals such as cattle, crocodiles, frogs, etc. if go into the water will swim. But if humans go they will drown.

They need to learn the art of swimming first and then get into the water. People should learn this. This is a safety weapon. It is not necessary that only a certain category of people should learn swimming. The fisherman should know the art of swimming. The sailors should know the art of swimming. Everyone should know it. The mishap can happen to any -one. It will not see who is to be victimized.

It is even seen in most of the cases that the sailors or the fishermen are itself not the swimmers. They should know it. It is very important for them. They have to deal with the water bodies all through-out the day. It would be a great risk for them if they are unaware of this art.

They can save themselves from drowning. They can easily do boat rides knowing the fact that know swimming. If anything goes wrong they would be able to escape and be safe. They can easily do water sports which other people hesitate to do.

All the non -swimmers who try these water stunts or go on boat rides they are always under the threat of danger. They are in areas prone to high waves and disturbances. Their life is always under the risk. If it happens that a big huge wave turns the boat then people would drown.

The one who knows swimming would escape easily but others would die. There are various incidents happening near the sea shore. We always get to hear the news of death of several people because of the drowning in the river. This is very sad. Hence it becomes very necessary to learn swimming.

 The advantage of knowing swimming is great. It is said that save some one’s life is equal to give life to some-one. A swimmer in tough situations can perform several things. He has the power not only to save himself but also to save others. He can protect other as well. It feels so sad and dejected if we are unable to help some-one who is really in need. On the other hand it feels great when we are able to help others.

There would not be any other site as helpless as to see some -one dying. In case of drowning we could only see the people drowning if we don’t know swimming. But it would feel great and amazing if we are able to save the life of the drowning one. It is a big gift to us.

Nothing is bigger than saving the life of some-one.  Swimming has lot more advantages other than this. It is very healthy and it keeps the metabolism of body stable. It helps the people to remain healthy. It is very pleasing and a good experience.

It makes people feel light and enables them to enjoy themselves. It is a very amazing way of exercise. It makes the movement of muscles. The beautiful destination places to spend vacations are on river side. It looks ecstatic and beautiful.

The feeling of happiness would increase more if people know how to swim. They can take the complete pleasure of their vacation. They can swim and float on the river. They can perform various water tasks. They can go for water surfing.

They can go for boat rides. They can swim. They can do river rafting and cliff jumping. All these sports are possible only when you know how to swim.

There are various swimming competitions held up to national and international levels. People participate in this. The contestants make world records.
