Roughly half the player base is still on PS4, though PS5 players play almost twice as many hours in aggregate as their last-gen counter-parts. It makes sense that the most loyal players would be the ones to upgrade, but it has certainly eroded the idea of modern console generations being discrete cycles rather than continuations of platform like on PC and smartphones.

PC still won’t get big single-player games day-and-date

While Helldivers 2 is the best-selling game of the year so far thanks to it coming to PS5 and PC simultaneously, Sony doesn’t have plans to start bringing games like Wolverine day-and-date to Steam. That appears to be reserved for live service games like Firewalk Studios’ Concord , expected later this year, and Bungie’s Marathon , slated for release in 2025.

Hulst said that the company will continue taking a “more strategic” approach with its “tentpole titles” by giving PC players a taste of its console exclusive franchises with ports close to when a sequel is about to come out. “We’re finding new audiences that are potentially going to be very interested in playing sequels on the PlayStation platform,” he claimed. That’s hard to believe considering Steam diehards are infamous for waiting years to play new blockbusters instead of buying them on rival storefronts like Epic Games.

Microtransactions are eating into game sales

Total spending might be up on PS5, but a lot of it is going to the same top 10 live service games like Fortnite and Apex Legends . Spending on full games has gone down by 12 percent on PS5 compared to PS4, despite the prices going up to $70. Spending on things like DLC, battle passes, and cosmetics, meanwhile, has rocketed up 176 percent this console generation. It’s not hard to see how this translates into a tougher landscape for new games, or why so many publishers are obsessed with making the next Grand Theft Auto Online or Genshin Impact . First-party Sony games continue to sell well, though: Spider-Man 2 has now sold over 11 million copies.

More PS Plus subscribers are upgrading

PS Plus is more complicated and expensive than ever, but it seems to be working for Sony thus far. Even if overall subscription numbers haven’t dramatically changed, more regular PS Plus subscribers are upgrading to the Extra and Premium tiers. The Extra tier, which includes the free library of games, grew 16 percent last year, and Premium, which includes access to PlayStation Classics and cloud streaming grew 19 percent. It seems to be in keeping with the theme that if you can’t grow the audience, simply upsell them as much as you can before they burnout.

One thing that doesn’t seem to be growing is the market for Sony’s virtual reality headsets. Nobody asked about PS VR2 in the meeting and it is not called out directly anywhere in the presentation. Instead, the VR headsets are rolled into a general category of “peripherals” alongside headphones and PlayStation Portal handhelds.

While player spending on peripherals has grown 34 percent since the PS4 console generation, it still makes up the smallest sliver of the total. Sony hasn’t disclosed how many of the headsets its shipped and has reportedly halted production until it can clear out the existing inventory. VR just doesn’t seem to be a meaningful part of Sony’s roadmap at the moment.

Sony hasn’t given up on mobile

Last year, Sony expected half of its releases in 2025 to be on PC and mobile. So far, it hasn’t shipped any new games on smartphones. They’re coming though as part of a strategy to reach new audiences and use that money to subsidize the investment required to grow core franchises on console. “On mobile we have been hard on at work on establishing a very strong, very seasoned core mobile team,” Hulst said. “We’re taking a more measured approach compared to the more aggressive approach you’ve seen on PC that’s because PC is more adjacent to the core of our development than mobile is.”

Live service gaming is still the goal

At one point, Hust was asked about the status of Bungie, which laid off 100 people last year amid plunging Destiny 2 numbers. He confirmed that the studio wasn’t expected contribute to Sony’s profit this year, in part due to ongoing investment in Marathon . At the same time, he said “significant progress” had been made with the integration into the rest of PlayStation. That sounds terrifying for longtime Bungie fans, but Hulst said the studio had been invaluable with getting the rest of the company up to speed on developing games as a service. He called these “optimizations” to its production pipelines for these types of games the main goal of the acquisition in the first place.

Will it bear fruit? It seems like only about a half of the dozen or so live service projects originally in development at one time or another are still moving forward. Sci-fi shooter Concord is one of those. Fairgame$ , Haven’s stab at multiplayer heist genre, is another. Neon Koi, Sony’s mobile game studio, is also listed under the Live Service Focus” section of its presentation. Guerrilla Games, meanwhile, is under the “Evolving / Multi-Genre” section, and we know it’s working on multiplayer spin-offs of Horizon Zero Dawn .

Interestingly, Bend Studio, which made Days Gone , is in the same category, suggesting its next project might have a multiplayer component as well. Whether any of these live service games can supplant the ones already taking up so much of the oxygen on PlayStation remains to be seen. With microtransaction spending growing the most since the PS4 generation, it’s easy to see why Sony wants to try.

Apologies if this is a long story. After my mother in Michigan gifted my daughter her 2001 VW Beetle with 48,000 miles on it, my daughter and I traveled from California to pick up the car. We headed out on Thursday morning for the 5 day drive back home to Oakland California, taking a northern route to stop by Badlands National Park and Mt Rushmore. By Saturday evening, we arrived in Cheyenne WY, where we spent the night. After looking at the weather forecast for the Sierra mountains, we decided to pick up some chains for our tires at the local Walmart in Laramie, WY, before continuing on our trip. On Sunday morning, as we got close to Laramie on I-80, the engine started sputtering, misfiring and losing power. The EPC light kept flashing and it was clear something was wrong. I was able to make it to the local Walmart parking lot, though the car stalled a few times on the way there. After I parked, I was unable to generate any power beyond idling, and the car continued to stall. I consulted yelp and google to find a local mechanic, but none of the local shops were open on Sunday. I saw a listing for Rise High Auto Repair, which described itself as a mobile mechanic company. I called the number and spoke with the proprietor, Chris on the phone. He said he could be there in 35 minutes and would diagnose the problem for $125 ($95 diagnostic fee and $35 travel fee) in the Walmart parking lot and that the $95 diagnostic fee would count against the repair cost if we opted to have him repair the car. When Chris arrived in his mobile truck, he was incredibly friendly and he got straight to work. He recommended replacing the spark plugs and wires, thinking that would address the issue. After finishing the repair and clearing the codes, he suggested I drive around in the parking lot a few times to reset the computer to see if the repair addressed the issue. However it did not. I made it about 200 feet and the initial problem persisted. He said he thought it could be an issue with the throttle, which he said he could clean, but if it needed replacement, I'd need to spend a couple of days in Laramie, because it was unlikely any of the local part shops would have the necessary part in inventory. He took apart the throttle, cleaned it out, and reset the computer. We decided to take our chances and see if we could make it to Salt Lake City and then Elko NV, which was about 625 miles away. The car ran well all the way to Elko. We got to Elko around 10:30 pm, and I noticed I had a text from Chis checking in on us to see how the trip was going. On Monday morning, we continued our trip back to Oakland and arrived safely with no further issues. Again, I had a text from Chris on Monday, to see if we made it home ok. All told we drove over 1100 miles. I can't say enough about Chris. First, he was incredibly competent. I could tell from speaking with him that he is extremely knowledgeable about automobile repairs. Watching him work, I felt like I was watching a surgeon. He made all of the repairs in the Walmart parking lot and he worked efficiently and thoroughly to ensure that he was able to repair the car. It was cold and windy on this particular Sunday and he invested over 4 hours of his time fixing our car outside. Finally, he was incredibly honest and kind. He cared enough to check in on us until we got home, something he really didn't need to do. I unequivocally recommend using Chris and his company if you find yourself in Laramie WY.

T-Mobile to acquire most of U.S. Cellular in $4.4 billion deal

Shares of  U.S. Cellular  popped nearly 6% Tuesday after  T-Mobile   announced  that it plans to acquire most of the company, including the wireless operator’s stores, some of its spectrum assets and its customers in a deal worth $4.4 billion.

The deal includes cash and up to $2 billion of debt, according to a press release from T-Mobile. Up to $100 million of the deal’s cash portion depends on certain financial and operating metrics being met between its signing and closing, according to a separate  press release  from U.S. Cellular.

Shares of T-Mobile were up more than 1% during Tuesday’s session.

T-Mobile  will acquire about 30%  of U.S. Cellular’s wireless spectrum as part of the deal, according to the U.S. Cellular release. It plans to use that to improve coverage in rural areas while offering better connectivity to U.S. Cellular customers around the United States, the two companies announced. The company said it will allow U.S. Cellular customers to keep their current plans or switch to a T-Mobile plan.

Both companies said that U.S. Cellular will retain 70% of its wireless spectrum and towers and will lease space on at least 2,100 additional towers to T-Mobile. The deal will also allow T-Mobile to sign new long-term leases on at least 2,015 U.S. Cellular-owned towers and extend existing leases on about 600 others, U.S. Cellular said in its release.

This will give U.S. Cellular customers a “strong anchor tenant” for at least 15 years after the deal’s close, the company said.

The news follows T-Mobile’s $1.35 billion acquisition of Ka’ena, the parent company of Mint Mobile. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission  approved that deal  in April.  T-Mobile merged with Sprint  in 2020 in a deal worth $26 billion.

The Wall Street Journal  reported earlier in May that T-Mobile and  Verizon  were in talks to “carve up” U.S. Cellular’s wireless spectrum but said a deal with Verizon on a separate transaction could take longer or fall through.

The companies expect the deal to close in mid-2025.

T-Mobile announced it will acquire virtually all of U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations in a $4.4 billion deal that hopes to provide better connection to people in underserved, rural parts of the country.

As part of the acquisition, which was announced in a press release on Tuesday, T-Mobile will acquire U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations, wireless customers, stores and certain specified spectrum assets.

Approximately 30% of U.S. Cellular's spectrum assets are included in the deal, the company announced in a release.

U.S. Cellular will still own its towers and T-Mobile will lease space on a minimum of 2,100 additional towers.

“As customers from both companies will get more coverage and more capacity from our combined footprint, our competitors will be forced to keep up – and even more consumers will benefit," said T-Mobile's CEO, Mike Sievert, in a statement.

Sievert described the deal as a way the company is "shaking up wireless for the good of consumers."

The deal is expected to close in mid-2025, T-Mobile announced.

T-Mobile hopes the transaction creates more choice for consumers in areas with "expensive and limited plans from AT&T and Verizon," or those with little to no broadband connectivity. It adds that the deal will provide "best-in-class connectivity to rural Americans."

According to the Pew Research Center, a quarter of Americans struggle with high-speed internet. This need for broadband internet was highlighted during the pandemic, states Delmarva Now, a part of the USA TODAY Network.

The lack of broadband internet can even shut people out of possible jobs, reports Forbes .

Option to stay on their current plans

The press release states that U.S. Cellular customers can choose to stay on their current plans or transfer to a T-Mobile plan at no cost. They will receive new benefits like streaming and free international data roaming.

However, some internet users have voiced concerns about their payment potentially increasing.

"They said 'keep' (the same plan) didn't say anything about 'at the same price,'" said one Reddit user.

However, another user said they are still paying the same amount and haven't seen a change since T-Mobile acquired their previous provider, Sprint.

USA TODAY reached out to T-Mobile for comment on possible price increases but has not heard back yet.

Deal cost breakdown

According to the press release, T-Mobile will pay $4.4 billion for the acquisition.

The transaction will be completed with a combination of cash and $2 billion of debt that will be assumed by T-Mobile.

"To the extent any debtholders do not participate in the exchange, their bonds will continue as obligations of U.S. Cellular and the cash portion of the purchase price will be correspondingly increased," states the release.

AST SpaceMobile shares surged as much as 46% after Verizon Communications Inc. said it will invest $100 million in a partnership with the satellite communications company to provide wireless connectivity from space.

AST announced a similar partnership with AT&T Inc. two weeks ago. Now with both deals in hand, the Midland, Texas-based company said it will be able to provide 100% coverage of the continental US from smartphones to its future planned satellite system. Its system will use radio frequencies allotted to the two telecom giants by the Federal Communications Commission.

The partnership marks a rare move for Verizon and AT&T, as the two join forces with the same aerospace company in a bid to challenge Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Musk’s company announced a similar agreement with T-Mobile US Inc. in 2022.

Shares of AST rose as high as $7.80 on Wednesday in New York. Shares of Verizon and AT&T were little changed following the announcement.

“This partnership will enhance cellular connectivity in the United States, essentially eliminating dead zones and empowering remote areas of the country with space-based connectivity,” Abel Avellan, founder and chief executive officer of AST, said in a statement.

The deals by the two telecom companies represent a shared commitment to expanding space-based wireless service, said Chris Brown, head of network for AT&T. “Together with AST SpaceMobile we have agreed to welcome another mobile operator in the US to bring in more spectrum and more coverage to create an even better solution and enhance service capabilities,” he said. “With AST and the other partners around the globe we are shaping the future of connectivity for all.”

AST is one of a handful of companies trying to use low-orbiting satellites to provide connectivity to regular consumers via smartphones, a market often referred to as “direct-to-cell.”

SpaceX is pursuing the market with its massive Starlink system, which boasts roughly 6,000 satellites in orbit around the Earth. T-Mobile is providing its government-regulated radio frequencies to Starlink for their partnership, and the companies started testing of the service this year on some satellites.

Verizon will provide AST with $65 million in commercial prepayments, much of it subject to certain conditions. The additional $35 million will come in the form of convertible notes.

AST has a 693-square-foot satellite, BlueWalker 3, in orbit, after launching it on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2022. Eventually, the company plans to provide global cellular coverage with a system of 168 satellites in low-Earth orbit. The company plans to ship its first five commercial satellites to Florida this summer for launch.
