Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Garden’ for Class 1, 2, and 3 Kids

10 lines on ‘my garden’ in english, short paragraph on ‘my garden’, long essay on ‘my garden’ in english for kids, what will your child learn from this essay.

Gardening is a fun hobby for children. It involves planting different types of plants and trees that bear fruits, vegetables, or flowers in a well-planned manner on a plot of land or in pots. It is an enriching activity that many families take up. Children are introduced to it by parents to help them understand the importance of learning how to grow a plant. Many children are familiar with gardening and will be confident while writing an essay on this topic. Those who haven’t engaged in gardening may get interested in the activity through this topic.

‘My Garden’ is a fairly advanced topic for young children. Here are some points to remember when composing an essay on the topic:

  • When writing about this topic, it is essential to talk about both the facts and how one feels about their garden.
  • Gardening can be done on the ground and in planters. Children who are exposed to gardening in planters can focus on the specifics of potted plants.
  • While writing short essays on your garden, stick to general points about gardening that are relatable.
  • When writing long essays, add facts about gardening and tell the story of your garden.

The easiest way to write about a garden is to break it down into small segments as one-liners. An essay for class 1 on gardens can include simple points about gardening. A class 2 essay can consist of more facts.

  • My garden is one of the most beautiful parts of my house. The different types of plants and flowers make it very decorative and attractive.
  • Gardening helps us learn about the cycle of life and how to nurture plants.
  • By growing plants in our house, we get fresh air during the day and it also makes our home look so pretty!
  • Gardening is the best way to develop a deep love and understanding of nature.
  • Many people grow good fruits and vegetables in their gardens. I prefer flowers as they are very pretty to look at.
  • Half of my garden is dedicated to flowering plants, and the remaining has vegetables and herbs planted by my grandmother.
  • The vegetables harvested from our garden taste fresh and better than what we buy from stores.
  • My flowering plants also attract plenty of birds, insects and butterflies.
  • My garden is a haven for these small animals, and I love watching them all day.
  • Gardens require regular maintenance, without which they die eventually.

Children used to gardening work will have no problem writing about it. For those who have little experience in it, this short essay will give them some ideas:

Gardening is my favourite hobby, and I think my garden is the best place in my house. I can spend many hours every day working in my garden, and being there makes me feel fresh and happy. I got interested in gardening because of my mother and grandmother. They grow many different types of herbs, fruits and vegetables, which we eat and enjoy. My interest in gardening grew after my mother encouraged me to plant carrot seeds in a small pot. After a few weeks of taking care of them by watering and adding manure, I could harvest some baby carrots. Ever since then, I have been totally hooked on gardening.

My garden is in a small plot of land in my backyard. We grow flowering plants closer to the building, where there is some shade and some sunlight. For the vegetables, we choose a spot with plenty of sunlight, which they require to grow big. I have to maintain the garden by watering it every day or else the leaves will fade. I like sitting in the garden and relaxing in the fresh scenery. When my friends come home, I show them all the new flowers and plants I have added.

Class 3 students are expected to write a long essay on gardening. Your child can start by arranging all the ideas appropriately and weaving them into an engaging narrative. Here is an example for a descriptive essay on ‘My Garden’ for children of class 3:

I have always loved nature and greenery in every place I visit. My parents often take me out of the city to experience the countryside and beautiful nature that makes me feel alive. My city life is busy, and my garden is the only escape to nature in the middle of all the concrete buildings. I feel lucky to have enough space in my house to grow a beautiful garden. My garden is in the patch of land right next to my window. Not just that, I have plants in pots all around our house, including the terrace!

There is a small patch of lawn in my garden for my family and friends to sit and enjoy a leisurely time. We have planted hedges on the sides of the walls that give the garden a beautiful look and feel. The hedges grow fast, so they need to be trimmed often. Over a dozen different types of flowering plants decorate the house all around. I have planted flowering varieties both in the ground and in the pots. The flowers attract birds and butterflies, and it is the best sight in the world.

My mother has planted various vegetables in the section of the garden that faces our kitchen. We love eating the fresh vegetables we harvest from the garden. Different seasons are suited for growing different vegetables, but we have cherry tomatoes all year round.

Since my window faces the garden, the plants and flowers are the first things I see every morning after I wake up. Whether I am studying or just relaxing, my garden is my place of peace and zen. All my friends like to come and sit in my garden because of how fresh it feels. Gardening is an activity I believe everyone should take up even if they don’t have much space in the house. They will be surprised at how well some plants can do in a simple pot!

Writing about gardening will teach your children how to write about a hobby they enjoy. Gardening is an activity that most children would be familiar with. However, some living in dense cities might not have been exposed to it. They might learn some new facts while thinking about gardening and get interested in trying their hand at it. The topic helps them ponder over the responsibility of tending a garden. It will also encourage them to observe the benefits of a garden and appreciate nature.

The garden that surrounds my house is my favourite place to be. It is peaceful and helps me calm down when life becomes too much to handle. Having a garden, spending time in it and taking care of it have many benefits for everyone regardless of age or experience. It makes you feel proud of yourself for taking care of something so well; it reduces stress and gives you the chance to grow your fruits and vegetables.

My garden doesn’t look large from the outside, but you realize that there are much more plants than you thought when you’re inside. My garden has large trees, shrubs, herbs and gorgeous flowers . My favourite tree is the sapota tree, otherwise known as the chikoo tree. This is because when the sun sets in the evening, its rays filter through the leaves of the sapota tree, and the view is absolutely beautiful.

There is a path that runs throughout the garden and around the house. It is made of different materials at different points. I find this unique, and I think it adds character and makes the garden more special. The most important aspect of the garden is that it is entirely designed by my grandparents . They wanted to make the house feel more cosy and homely and decided that the best way to do that would be to have a garden all around where people could go if they felt sad.

We don’t have a professional gardener to help take care of it. The family does all the work such as watering the plants, weeding the garden and keeping away pesky insects and animals. We pluck the sapota fruit very regularly. We also make sure that the part of the tree that leans over the fence isn’t chewed off my cows or subject to stealing by other naughty children.

Our garden is full of colourful flowers. We have a row of roses on one side and a row of seasonal flowers on the other side. These flowers include marigold, petunia, pansy, hollyhock, aster, alyssum, hibiscus, sunflowers and lilies. It is extremely delightful to see these flowers blooming. My Garden Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

My garden is full of aromatic herbs. My grandfather loves gardening and I love helping him with this activity. We have grown numerous types of plants in our garden. Most of these are herbs such as aloe vera, basil, mint, coriander, curry plant and lemon grass. This helps in two ways. It adds to the beauty of the house and also provides natural herbs that offer so many health benefits.

My Morning Begins Here

My morning begins in my garden. As I wake up, the first thing I do is to head straight to my garden. It is the best way to begin my day. I just love the essence of this place. My grandfather is already seated on the small bench we have placed there. I go and sit right next to him. I practice deep breathing for around 15 minutes and then have a look at the various plants around the garden. The sight is extremely refreshing. I begin with my daily tasks only after spending around half an hour in my garden.

The Best Way to Spend My Evening

I often go out with my friends in the evening after my tuition classes. It gives me respite after a long day at school and coaching institute. We go to the nearby market to have some evening snacks and chit chat for a while before heading home. While I do look forward to this time every day, I love spending the evening hours in my garden all the more. Many a times, I call my friends to my place. We sit in the garden while my mother serves hot soup and snacks. For me, it is simply the best way to spend the evening hours.

My garden is an integral part of my life. This place can uplift my mood in fraction of seconds. I help my grandfather take care of my garden.

My Garden Essay 3 (400 words)

I just love nature. Hills, valleys, sunsets, sea, plants, trees and flowers – I love everything that is natural and organic. Every time we visit a hill station, I feel like staying there forever. It gets difficult for me to return as I feel so attached to the very essence of the places where nature can be seen in its pure, unadulterated form.

My Garden – My Idea

While I cannot bring along hills and valleys back home, I can certainly feel the enchanting smell of the flowers and plants by growing some at my place. As we were coming back from our trip to Assam, I was missing the lush green tea gardens and the beautiful flowers in the botanical garden there. It was like I had left my heart there. It was then that the idea of growing my own garden sprang in my mind. I spoke about it to my sister and she was equally thrilled.

Since we live in a flat, we did not have a proper area that could be turned into a garden. However, we could certainly fill one of our balconies with different types of flowers and feel their aroma fill in our house.

We spoke about the idea with our parents and they agreed to it on the condition that we will have to take care of the entire thing on our own.

Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

My Garden Essay 4 (500 words)

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers filled our house.

It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

My Garden Essay 5 (600 words)

For me, a garden is an integral part of the house. This is because I have seen one at my place ever since I my childhood. I have learned to crawl, walk and eat in my garden. I have numerous fond memories attached to it and it forms an important part of my life. It is my grandmother who beautified this place. She has put immense efforts in growing the garden and maintaining it.

Benefits of Gardening:

  • The Gazebo in My Garden

Since we live on the outskirts of the city, we have the luxury of having a big house and quite a big garden. Besides the beautiful trees and flowers that form a part of my garden, there is a beautiful gazebo set up here that adds to its beauty. The gazebo is set in one corner of the garden and it is my favourite spot. My father chose its design and it is appreciated by all.

We host a lot of parties at home and the gazebo is a hot favourite spot of the guests. During the times, when the weather is pleasant, my parents usually plan barbeque in the garden and everyone just loves sitting in the Gazebo with their plate of snacks.

I also love spending some time during the evening hours at this quite place in my garden. Many a times, I also study here. I find it easier to concentrate here compared to other parts of my house.

  • Organic Vegetables and Fruits in My Garden

Besides beautiful rows of leafy plants and multi-hued flowers, my grandmother has also planted many vegetables in our garden. Spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green chillies, carrots and eggplants are among some of the vegetables that grow in my garden. Herbs such as coriander, mint and curry plant have also been planted. All these vegetables grow in abundance in my garden and we often cut and cook them for our meals.

Apart from these, my garden also has quite a few fruit trees. Lemon tree, mango tree, banana tree and papaya tree have always been a part of it. They bear fruits and fill the air with their refreshing smell. Many a times, I have been made to climb the mango tree to pluck the mangoes. It is super fun and I always look forward to it.

Maintaining Garden is not Easy – a tough task

Though having a garden adds to the beauty of the house, it is quite a task to maintain it. Many people love the idea of growing plants and try their hands at it but give up in some time. This is because plants require utmost care. It is essential for you to take care of them on a daily basis in order to keep them fresh and green and help them grow.

Plants do not only require water but also need different types of manures to grow. Hats off to my grandmother who is so dedicated towards taking care of our garden even at this age. She makes sure the plants are watered twice a day and all the required manures are added from time to time. She also ensures that weeds and unwanted plants that hamper the growth of the other plants are removed timely.

We have hired a professional gardener who comes to our place thrice a week and takes care of our garden. My grandmother supervises him and gets the tasks done properly.

Some of the best memories of my childhood are attached to my garden. I love it when my entire family sits together in the garden to have their evening tea. I also love the winter afternoons when we have our lunch in the garden. It is simply amazing. Having a garden at home is blissful.

Essay on Garden

The gardens enhance both the outside and interior elegance of the property. They provide much-needed fresh air that is desperately needed in today's polluted world. The garden is regarded as the most attractive area of the home where one can unwind and relax away from the tiresome daily routine. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘Garden’.

100 Words Essay on Garden

200 words essay on garden, 500 words essay on garden.

Essay on Garden

The garden, in my opinion, is the ideal space in a home. It is a place where one can spend some time relaxing in the middle of nature and feeling rejuvenated. A magnificent and calming cacophony seems to be created by the oxygen present in the air, the sun streaming through the entire expanse of the open area, the lovely scent of the flowers, and the tweeting of birds. Nowadays, only a few homes are fortunate enough to have a garden. But if a person wishes to have a calm life, they should think about having a garden for their home.

My favourite area of my residence is the garden. I don't get bored spending hours in my garden. I just adore how it makes me feel alive. Along with taking care of several other domestic duties, my mom takes care of the garden at my house. Despite the limited space, she came up with the idea to create a lovely garden at home because she is a significant fan of nature. The majority of the residents in my neighbourhood have covered this section of their home to create a tiny room or transformed it into a car parking area. But my mom decided to create a wonderful garden on this small plot of land.

Our garden is bursting with vibrant colours and flowers. On one side, there is a row of daisies, and on the other, a row of seasonal flowers. These blooms include daisies, dandelions, tulips, roses, asters, jasmine, and sunflowers. The blooming of these flowers is quite beautiful. My mom makes sure the plants receive proper manure and watering so they may develop and blossom as they should. I also assist my mom with gardening tasks. I'm grateful that my mom gave me such a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the outdoors.

The ideal location in a house is a garden. Because the garden is the only place in every house where an individual can relax and have a sense of peace from a hectic lifestyle. Additionally, having a garden at home has numerous health advantages. A garden, for instance, contains many plants that produce oxygen.

Additionally, the flower's aroma helps lift one's spirits in the morning. Due to a lack of available area, individuals today are unable to construct gardens. Some people also believe that having a garden is wasting space. As a result, the house is no longer packed with gardens. A garden is essential for leading a tranquil life. Different plant species can be grown in gardens. The surroundings are enriched by these flowers' lovely scents, and they are the simplest to grow. The colours of these flowers also enhance the beauty of a garden. In addition, several vegetables can also be grown there and they also have a number of health advantages. This further guarantees the freshness and chemical-free status of the vegetables. You can walk on the green grass that grows around the garden space. As a result, it's the ideal location for any exercise. It also features a soft surface where kids can enjoy a variety of sports.

Maintaining a Garden

Everyone believes that planting flowers and trees is a simple undertaking. But only those who have a garden and those who do gardening are aware of how much work and effort it takes. Furthermore, plants require manure in addition to water. They also require regular attention to stay fresh and attractive. Even though many people pay professional gardeners to take care of their gardens, doing it ourselves is more enjoyable. You can better connect with the garden as a result.

Advantages of a Garden

The garden is the sole area of the house that can soothe the senses and make one feel physically and mentally well. A gazebo can be installed in the garden, where you can sit and take in the beauty of the space. In addition, having a garden at home allows you to cultivate organic fruits and vegetables. This product comes in a lot so that you can give some to your neighbours. Additionally, fruits and vegetables grown at home are tastier and healthier than those purchased from markets. The garden might contain flowering plants that release a pleasing fragrance to create a bright and fragrant atmosphere.

Planting a Garden

Simply visit the nursery to purchase seasonal plants each season; the majority of plants are changed each year as a result of climatic change. Place the plants in a logical order after purchasing them. Therefore, the garden appears more vibrant. It can be concluded that gardening is a highly positive and fruitful practice. It fosters a person's appreciation of nature and connection to the surrounding vegetation. Most people associate their fondest childhood experiences with the garden. Families gather in the garden for evening tea and conversation to strengthen their bonds. A garden is, by far, the most fantastic part of a home, regardless of the season.

Essay on My Garden

Gardens are special. They add to the beauty of the house as well as the surrounding areas. The fresh air they render is much-needed in today’s environment that is otherwise filled with pollution.

Everyone should own a garden. It is the best part of the house. Gardens filled with bright colourful flowers are a treat for the eyes. Here are essays on My Garden of varying lengths to help you with the same in your exam. You can choose any My Garden essay as per your need:

Long and Short Essay on My Garden in English

My garden essay 1 (200 words).

My Garden is my favourite part of my house. I can spend hours in my garden without getting bored. It makes me come alive and I just love that feeling.

It is my mother who maintains the garden at our place just as she takes care of various other household chores. She is a huge nature lover and it was her idea to build a beautiful garden at home even though there isn’t a lot of space here. Most of the people in our neighbourhood have converted this place in their house into car parking area or have covered the place to build a small room. But my mother chose to convert this small piece of land into a lovely garden.

My mother ensures that the plants get water and manure regularly so that they grow and bloom the way they should. I also help my mother with these activities.

I am thankful to my mother for giving me such a beautiful place to sit and rejoice nature.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. 250 Words Essay on My School Garden

Schools are not just about classrooms and textbooks; they are also about instilling a love for nature and the environment. My school garden is a testament to this philosophy. Nestled in a corner of the expansive campus, it is a haven of greenery and tranquility that serves as a living laboratory for students.

Design and Diversity

The design of our school garden is a marvel in itself. It showcases a diverse range of flora, from flowering plants and fruit trees to medicinal herbs and exotic species. This diversity is not accidental; it is a deliberate attempt to expose students to the wide variety of plant life and to foster an appreciation for biodiversity.

Educational Value

The garden is not just for show; it is an integral part of our curriculum. It offers a hands-on approach to learning about botany, ecology, and environmental science. Students participate in planting, nurturing, and observing the life cycles of plants, gaining practical knowledge and skills that textbooks alone cannot provide.

Environmental Impact

Beyond its educational value, the garden also has a significant environmental impact. It acts as a green lung, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, thereby contributing to a healthier school environment. Additionally, it serves as a habitat for various birds and insects, promoting local biodiversity.

500 Words Essay on My School Garden

Introduction to the school garden.

The school garden, a place of learning and growth, is a unique feature of my educational institution. It is not just a space with blooming flowers and lush greenery, but a living laboratory that has played a significant role in shaping our holistic learning experience.

The Layout of the Garden

The garden stretches over a substantial area and is sectioned into different parts. The flower section is a riot of colors, with roses, sunflowers, and daisies blooming throughout the year. The vegetable patch is a practical demonstration of sustainable living, where we grow seasonal vegetables. A small herb garden is home to various medicinal plants. The orchard, filled with fruit trees, is a testament to patience and the rewards of long-term commitment.

Learning in the Garden

The school garden has been a dynamic space for experiential learning. In biology classes, it serves as a hands-on resource to observe plant life cycles, understand photosynthesis, and study different species of flora. The garden has also been a focal point in environmental studies, where we learn about composting, organic farming, and sustainable living.

The Garden as a Space for Community Engagement

The garden has also been a hub for community engagement. We have ‘Garden Days’ where students, teachers, and parents come together to plant saplings, clean the area, and learn about different plants. It fosters a sense of responsibility, teamwork, and respect for the environment among us.

Implications for Mental Health

In the hustle and bustle of academic life, the garden provides a tranquil space for students. Research shows that exposure to green spaces can reduce stress and improve concentration. Many of us find solace in the quiet corners of the garden, basking in the serenity it offers.

Conclusion: The School Garden as a Symbol

The school garden, in essence, is a symbol of life. It represents growth, change, resilience, and the beauty of co-existence. It is a constant reminder that learning is not confined to the four walls of a classroom. It is everywhere, in every leaf, every petal, and every fruit that grows in our school garden. The garden is not just a part of our school; it is a part of us, shaping our learning, our values, and our perspective towards the environment and life at large.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

My Personal Philosophy of Education

This essay about the philosophy of education highlights the transformative power of learning to shape individuals’ characters and values. It emphasizes the belief in the intrinsic potential of every student, advocating for holistic development beyond academic excellence. The essay stresses the importance of fostering a sense of community and collaboration within educational environments and recognizes education as a lifelong journey of growth and empowerment. Ultimately, it underscores the role of education as a catalyst for social change and empowerment, aiming to create a more just and inclusive society.

How it works

In the vast mosaic of human experience, education emerges as a luminescent thread weaving through the fabric of society, guiding individuals toward enlightenment and insight. As I delve into articulating my personal philosophy of education, I am struck by its profound influence not only on intellectual growth but also on the shaping of character and values. Education, to me, is not merely a conduit for the transfer of knowledge; it is a transformative odyssey that empowers individuals to navigate life’s intricate pathways with wisdom, empathy, and purpose.

At the core of my educational philosophy lies an unwavering belief in the intrinsic potential of every individual. I perceive education as the catalyst that unlocks this latent potential, nurturing talents and igniting passions. Like a gardener tending to a diverse array of plants, I see each student as a unique seedling, requiring tailored care and attention to thrive. As an educator, my role extends beyond the dissemination of facts; it involves cultivating an environment conducive to learning, where curiosity is fostered, and mistakes are celebrated as opportunities for growth.

Fundamental to my philosophy is the concept of holistic development. Education transcends the confines of textbooks and classrooms, encompassing the intellectual, emotional, and social dimensions of human existence. While academic excellence holds importance, it is equally essential to nurture qualities such as resilience, empathy, and critical thinking. A comprehensive education equips individuals not only with the skills to excel academically but also with the moral compass to navigate the complexities of life with integrity and compassion.

In fostering a holistic approach to education, I place great emphasis on fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the learning environment. Education is a communal endeavor, enriched by diverse perspectives and shared experiences. I am dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where every voice is valued, fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding. By nurturing a sense of belonging and interconnectedness, education becomes a vehicle for personal growth and societal cohesion.

Another cornerstone of my educational philosophy is the recognition of learning as a lifelong journey. Education does not culminate with the attainment of a degree or the conclusion of formal schooling; rather, it is an ongoing voyage of discovery that extends throughout one’s lifetime. Thus, I strive to instill in my students a passion for lifelong learning, encouraging them to embrace curiosity, pursue new challenges, and continually expand their horizons.

Integral to my philosophy is the belief in education as a catalyst for social change and empowerment. Education has the power to dismantle barriers and foster social mobility, offering individuals the opportunity to transcend the constraints of circumstance and realize their full potential. As an educator, I am committed to creating equitable learning opportunities for all students, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. By providing access to quality education, we can strive towards a more just and inclusive society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the world.

In essence, my personal philosophy of education is rooted in the belief that education is not just a journey, but a transformative odyssey of self-discovery and empowerment. It is a journey that extends beyond the confines of the classroom, encompassing the realms of intellect, emotion, and spirit. As an educator, I am committed to nurturing the minds and hearts of my students, fostering a lifelong love for learning, and empowering them to become compassionate, thoughtful, and engaged citizens of the world.

Sophia Bush comes out as queer, confirms relationship with Ashlyn Harris

Sophia Bush

Actor Sophia Bush came out as queer in an emotional essay in Glamour and confirmed she’s in a relationship with retired U.S. Women’s National Team soccer player Ashlyn Harris.

“I sort of hate the notion of having to come out in 2024,” Bush wrote in a cover story for the fashion magazine published Thursday. “But I’m deeply aware that we are having this conversation in a year when we’re seeing the most aggressive attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in modern history.”

Bush noted that there were more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills proposed in state legislatures last year and said this motivated her to “give the act of coming out the respect and honor it deserves.”

“I’ve experienced so much safety, respect, and love in the queer community, as an ally all of my life, that, as I came into myself, I already felt it was my home,” she wrote. “I think I’ve always known that my sexuality exists on a spectrum. Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer . I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.”

The “One Tree Hill” star filed for divorce from entrepreneur Grant Hughes in August. People magazine first reported in October that Bush and Harris were dating, but neither confirmed nor commented on the report. The pair later attended an Oscar’s viewing party together in March .

In the essay, Bush addressed online rumors that her relationship with Harris began before Harris had officially divorced from fellow soccer star Ali Krieger, in September.

“Everyone that matters to me knows what’s true and what isn’t,” Bush wrote. “But even still there’s a part of me that’s a ferocious defender, who wants to correct the record piece by piece. But my better self, with her earned patience, has to sit back and ask, What’s the f------- point? For who? For internet trolls? No, thank you. I’ll spend my precious time doing things I love instead.”

Bush said that after news about her and Harris became public, her mom told her that a friend called and said, “Well, this can’t be true. I mean, your daughter isn’t gay .”

“My mom felt that it was obvious, from the way her friend emphasized the word, that she meant it judgmentally,” Bush wrote. “And you know what my mom said? ‘Oh honey, I think she’s pretty gay. And she’s happy .’”

Bush wrote that she felt like she was wearing a weighted vest that she could finally put down.

“I finally feel like I can breathe,” Bush wrote. “I turned 41 last summer, amid all of this, and I heard the words I was saying to my best friend as they came out of my mouth. ‘I feel like this is my first birthday,’ I told her. This year was my very first birthday.”

The Most Important Thing I Teach My Students Isn’t on the Syllabus

essay of my garden

By Frank Bruni

Mr. Bruni is a contributing Opinion writer and the author of the forthcoming book “The Age of Grievance,” from which this essay is adapted.

I warn my students. At the start of every semester, on the first day of every course, I confess to certain passions and quirks and tell them to be ready: I’m a stickler for correct grammar, spelling and the like, so if they don’t have it in them to care about and patrol for such errors, they probably won’t end up with the grade they’re after. I want to hear everyone’s voice — I tell them that, too — but I don’t want to hear anybody’s voice so often and so loudly that the other voices don’t have a chance.

And I’m going to repeat one phrase more often than any other: “It’s complicated.” They’ll become familiar with that. They may even become bored with it. I’ll sometimes say it when we’re discussing the roots and branches of a social ill, the motivations of public (and private) actors and a whole lot else, and that’s because I’m standing before them not as an ambassador of certainty or a font of unassailable verities but as an emissary of doubt. I want to give them intelligent questions, not final answers. I want to teach them how much they have to learn — and how much they will always have to learn.

I’d been on the faculty of Duke University and delivering that spiel for more than two years before I realized that each component of it was about the same quality: humility. The grammar-and-spelling bit was about surrendering to an established and easily understood way of doing things that eschewed wild individualism in favor of a common mode of communication. It showed respect for tradition, which is a force that binds us, a folding of the self into a greater whole. The voices bit — well, that’s obvious. It’s a reminder that we share the stages of our communities, our countries, our worlds, with many other actors and should conduct ourselves in a manner that recognizes this fact. And “it’s complicated” is a bulwark against arrogance, absolutism, purity, zeal.

I’d also been delivering that spiel for more than two years before I realized that humility is the antidote to grievance.

We live in an era defined and overwhelmed by grievance — by too many Americans’ obsession with how they’ve been wronged and their insistence on wallowing in ire. This anger reflects a pessimism that previous generations didn’t feel. The ascent of identity politics and the influence of social media, it turned out, were better at inflaming us than uniting us. They promote a self-obsession at odds with community, civility, comity and compromise. It’s a problem of humility.

The Jan. 6 insurrectionists were delusional, frenzied, savage. But above all, they were unhumble. They decided that they held the truth, no matter all the evidence to the contrary. They couldn’t accept that their preference for one presidential candidate over another could possibly put them in the minority — or perhaps a few of them just reasoned that if it did, then everybody else was too misguided to matter. They elevated how they viewed the world and what they wanted over tradition, institutional stability, law, order.

It’s no accident that they were acting in the service of Donald Trump, whose pitch to Americans from the very start was a strikingly — even shockingly — unhumble one. “I alone can fix it,” he proclaimed in his 2016 speech accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president; and at his inauguration in January of the following year, the word “humbled,” which had been present in the first inaugural remarks of both Barack Obama and George W. Bush, was nowhere to be found. Nor were any of its variants. That whole sentiment and politesse were missing, as they had been during a campaign centered on his supposed omniscience.

There are now mini-Trumps aplenty in American politics, but anti-Trumps will be our salvation, and I say that not along partisan or ideological lines. I’m talking about character and how a society holds itself together. It does that with concern for the common good, with respect for the institutions and procedures that protect that and with political leaders who ideally embody those traits or at least promote them.

Those leaders exist. When Charlie Baker, a former Massachusetts governor, was enjoying enormous favor and lofty approval ratings as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state, he was also stressing the importance of humility. He was fond of quoting Philippians 2:3, which he invoked as a lodestar for his administration. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,” it says. “Rather, in humility value others above yourself.”

That’s great practical advice for anyone in government, where most meaningful success hinges on teamwork and significant progress requires consensus. Governing, as opposed to demagoguery, is about earning others’ trust and cooperation. Exhibiting a willingness to listen to and to hear them goes a long way toward that.

“Insight and knowledge come from curiosity and humility,” Mr. Baker wrote in a 2022 book, “Results,” coauthored with his chief of staff, Steve Kadish, a Democrat. “Snap judgments — about people or ideas — are fueled by arrogance and conceit. They create blind spots and missed opportunities. Good ideas and interesting ways to accomplish goals in public life exist all over the place if you have the will, the curiosity, and the humility to find them.”

Humble politicians don’t insist on one-size-fits-all answers when those aren’t necessary as a matter of basic rights and fundamental justice. Humble activists don’t either. The campaign for same-sex marriage — one of the most successful social movements of recent decades — showed that progress can be made not by shaming people, not by telling them how awful they are, but by suggesting how much better they could be. Marriage-equality advocates emphasized a brighter future that they wanted to create, not an ugly past that they wanted to litigate. They also wisely assured Americans that gay and lesbian people weren’t trying to explode a cherished institution and upend a system of values, but instead wanted in.

“I don’t want to disparage shouting and demands — everything has its place,” Evan Wolfson, the founder of the pivotal advocacy group Freedom to Marry, told me when we revisited the movement’s philosophy and tactics. At times, he acknowledged, champions of a cause “need to break the silence, we need to push, we need to force.”

“But I used to say, ‘Yes, there’s demanding, but there’s also asking,’” he recalled. “And one is not the enemy of the other. People don’t like being accused, people don’t like being condemned, people don’t like being alienated. It’s a matter of conversation and persuasion.”

That’s consistent with the message delivered by Loretta Ross, a longtime racial justice and human rights advocate, through her teaching, public speaking and writing. Troubled by the frequent targeting and pillorying of people on social media, she urged the practice of calling in rather than calling out those who’ve upset you. “Call-outs make people fearful of being targeted,” she wrote in a guest essay for Times Opinion . “People avoid meaningful conversations when hypervigilant perfectionists point out apparent mistakes, feeding the cannibalistic maw of the cancel culture.” Instead, she advised, engage them. If you believe they need enlightenment, try that route, “without the self-indulgence of drama,” she wrote.

She was preaching humility.

She was also recognizing other people’s right to disagree — to live differently, to talk differently. Pluralism is as much about that as it is about a multiracial, multifaith, multigender splendor. That doesn’t mean a surrender or even a compromise of principles; a person can hold on to those while practicing tolerance, which has been supplanted by grievance. Tolerance shares DNA with respect. It recognizes that other people have rights and inherent value even when we disagree vehemently with them.

We all carry wounds, and some of us carry wounds much graver than others. We confront obstacles, including unjust and senseless ones. We must tend to those wounds. We must push hard at those obstacles. But we mustn’t treat every wound, every obstacle, as some cosmic outrage or mortal danger. We mustn’t lose sight of the struggle, imperfection and randomness of life. We mustn’t overstate our vulnerability and exaggerate our due.

While grievance blows our concerns out of proportion, humility puts them in perspective. While grievance reduces the people with whom we disagree to caricature, humility acknowledges that they’re every bit as complex as we are — with as much of a stake in creating a more perfect union.
