Funding and scholarships

If you are employed as a doctoral researcher by the UvA, you can sometimes apply for an additional grant to carry out fieldwork abroad, for example. Once you have completed your doctoral programme, you may also be able to apply for a grant to pursue an academic career after graduation.

A wide range of different grant options is available. Some of the more popular scholarships are listed below. This list is in no way comprehensive. You are therefore advised to contact the coordinator of the Graduate School or research institute that covers your discipline. They will be able to advise you on the most relevant grant providers in your specialist field.

PhD-related fees

In some cases fees can be charged to external PhD candidates, external scholarship providers and/or funding parties. Examples are fees to help fund workspaces, research facilities, training and education. If this is the case, these fees and any exemptions will be mentioned on the webpages of the relevant faculty or research institute.

Funding & Financial Support

Once admitted to the PhD programme Wageningen University & Research (WUR) offers an education backpack of 3500 EUR to PhD candidates that are formally admitted to the PhD programme (approved TSP and Project proposal in prep or approved) and will defend their thesis at Wageningen University & Research.

There are many places where one can apply for funding to finance a PhD. Please check the webpages of these funders for up-to-date information on calls.

Erasmus+ travel fellowships available for Wageningen PhD candidates

Erasmus+ fellowships can be used to contribute to the costs for travel and stay, for example for travel to attend a PhD course or to visit to a research group at a university or scientific institute in Europe. The fellowships may be used in combination with other, non-EU, travel fellowships such as the travel fellowships of your graduate school.

Erasmus distinguishes visits 1 - 60 days and visits from 60 days – one year. Budgets for travel and stay vary per visited country.

Tuition per PhD category

Thesis printing.

PhD candidates who graduate at our university will be compensated for the printing costs of the thesis. The compensation covers the printing costs for the required number of copies of the dissertation to a maximum € 1250 euro. The compensation is provided by the relevant chair group. If you have questions please contact the secretary of the chair group involved.

PhD scholarships

A PhD cannot be completed without adequate financing. If you are appointed a position at Erasmus University Rotterdam, in most cases your finances are already taken care of.  In some cases, however, you will need to write and submit grant proposals, in order to gain funding for (part of) your project. Also, you might want to write grant proposals for the period after finishing the thesis (especially if you are pursuing an academic career), for congress visits or international collaborations. On this page, you can find see which grants are available depending on your country of origin. 

In the Netherlands, research is financed mainly by the government, industrial organisations or others, for example certain foundations. Three funding categories (“geldstromen”) are recognised:

• The first category consists of 2 billion Euros provided by the government. This funding has to be shared by all universities.
• The second category also consists of 2 billion Euros, and is also provided by the government, but is not directly dedicated to the universities. Different organisations, like the KNAW and the NWO, have the responsibility for distributing this funding by providing grants.
• The third category consists of external funding from, for example Europe, companies, foundations or private companies.

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms. For that reason, it has established several scholarship programmes specifically designed to offer talented and motivated international students the opportunity to pursue a degree at TU Delft.

TU Delft MSc programme Scholarships Overview

Do you want to apply for a scholarship.

Submit your complete MSc application with the mandatory scholarship documents (including 2 reference letters and scholarship application form) before the scholarship deadline. Your MSc application will then be reviewed and an admission decision given; at that moment you will also be considered for a Scholarship.

Candidates must not wait for an admission decision to submit a scholarship application.

Scholarships offered to MSc-students of all TU Delft faculties, academic period 2024-2026 (only Fall Semester)

Justus & louise van effen, faculty specific scholarships, academic period 2024-2026, applied sciences, electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science, industrial design engineering, ena voûte design engineering excellence scholarship*.

Starting in 2023-2024, the faculty will offer the Ena Voûte Design Engineering Excellence Scholarship for an international student applying for any one of the faculty’s three Master’s programmes. Ena Voûte was dean of IDE from 2012 to 2022 and currently serves as TU Delft’s Pro Vice Rector of International Affairs. “As the design discipline orientates itself to global challenges such as sustainability and health, an international perspective is more important than ever, so I am proud that we are able to support a talented international student via this scholarship each year.” * The Ena Voûte Design Engineering Excellence Scholarship was previously known as the Faculty of IDE Excellence Scholarship and has the same terms and conditions.

Technology, Policy and Management

At the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of TU Delft a number of full scholarships are available every year for excellent international applicants. 

Starting in 2023-2024, the Faculty TPM will offer the Bert Enserink scholarship for one student in the Master programme Engineering & Policy Analysis EPA in remembrance of Dr. Bert Enserink. Bert Enserink was the EPA Programme Director for 13 years and sadly passed away in 2022. Bert Enserink embraced EPA’s international character.  He strongly believed that social engagement is essential for engineering solutions to global challenges and, in that context, collaborated with researchers in Asia, Africa and South America. 

The Bert Enserink scholarship has been established with the aim of stimulating excellent international MSc students to study the Master EPA, and financially supporting them. It is a full scholarship covering the tuition fee and living expenses for two years.

At the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of TU Delft a number of full scholarships are available every year for excellent international applicants.

Starting in 2024-2025 , the Faculty TPM will offer the TU Delft Scholarship for Water Governance for one student in any of the Master programmes MOT, EPA or CoSEM .

TU Delft is proud to establish a Scholarship for Water Governance for talented and ambitious MSc students from any of the following regions: East Asia & Pacific, Central Asia, Latin America & Caribbean, Middle East & North Africa, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa.

The two-year master scholarship will be established at the TU Delft Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM). The master programmes of this faculty are designed to provide students with understanding both technologies and the context in which they play a role. Students follow technical modules and governance, management & organisation, economy and ethics modules. They can choose up to 6 out of 9 specific water related modules and can choose a water governance master thesis subject.

The scholarship comprises full tuition fees for a 2-year TU Delft TPM Master programme based on the statutory fee or institutional rate and contribution for the living expenses.

The scholarship is part of the TU Delft Global Scholarship Fund: for many talented students in developing countries, it is often not feasible to study at a world-class university of technology. TU Delft and Delft University Fund have therefore established the Delft Global Scholarship Fund .. These grants enable exceptionally talented and motivated students from low- and middle-income countries to obtain an engineering degree at TU Delft. The grants contribute to capacity building in developing countries and promote future leadership focused on sustainable development.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a guiding principle for TU Delft.

Henk Ovink who is initiator of and donor to the scholarship says “In my close to 9 years as special envoy for Water, I have learnt the importance of water governance; the formal and institutional arrangements, and the informal and innovative collaborative partnerships, the mission driven journeys. Water, connected to everything we value and aim for, is the driver for inclusive processes and integrated approaches. Understanding both the connective capacity of water with all of us, everywhere as well as the need to develop and implement new institutional arrangements and informal approaches, is key for equitable water security.”

Aukje Hassoldt , Dean of the Faculty: “I strongly believe that for solving our global water challenges, as for all global challenges with a strong technical component, technical knowledge alone is not sufficient. Understanding the societal and political aspects, knowing the parties involved and their interests, and knowing how to manage the process is just as important as understanding the technology. All are equally necessary to be able to analyse and take steps towards solving the problems. This is exactly what we want to teach our students. 

Chatarina Petra Salim is a student of TU Delft's Technology, Policy and Management faculty. Born in Indonesia, she started at TU Delft in 2022 as a recipient of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management Scholarship, which allowed her to pursue her master’s studies. While completing her master's degree in Management of Technology, she will also work as a teaching assistant at the Technology, Policy and Management faculty. In addition, she will work as an intern at TNO for her graduate project. Upon graduating from the master's program, Chatarina is planning to pursue her study for a PhD in multi-actor systems within the TPM faculty.

Elie Christian Azeufack is an alumnus of TU Delft's Technology, Policy and Management faculty. Born in Cameroon, Elie started at TU Delft in 2020 as a recipient of the Justus and Louise van Effen Excellence Scholarship, which allowed him to pursue his master’s studies. While completing his master's degree in Engineering and Policy Analysis, Elie also worked as a student assistant at the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. In addition, he worked for the faculty student council and as chairperson of the TU Delft Student Ambassador’s Programme. Upon graduating from the master's program, Elie embarked on his career as  Project Support Officer at the United Nation’s Agency for Migration in Geneva.

Salary and Benefits

In the Netherlands, appointed PhD candidates are considered employees of the university and therefore no tuition fee is charged. This also means that our PhD vacancies are fully-funded and salaried positions. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO).

The starting monthly salary for PhD candidates is € 2770,- in year 1, € 3226,- in year 2, € 3377,- in year 3, and € 3539,- in year 4 and 5 (all mentioned figures are gross and fixed amounts). Successful candidates are appointed on a full-time basis for a total of 4 or 5 years, depending on the project further extensions are possible. Candidates' performance is evaluated after 18 months and if positive, the contract is extended for additional 2.5 years.

Working at the Erasmus University Rotterdam means working in a professional environment, where development is encouraged through an active career and mobility policy. The Erasmus University Rotterdam highly appreciates flexibility and offers a 38-hour workweek, flexible working hours, maternal/paternal leave, holiday allowance, end of year bonus etc. Moreover, the University has a company childcare scheme, possibilities to participate in a terms of employment option model, company savings program and life insurance schemes and favourable collective insurance schemes. Furthermore, PhD candidates also benefit from the state-of-the-art research facilities and financial support programme (ESP-ERIM Support Programme), which ERIM has set up a for a wide range of research-related activities like conference participation and visits, international job market visits, external courses, scientific and educational literature, working visits to international supervisors, international research study/visit, etc.

External Funding

Most of ERIM's PhD positions are directly financed by internal funding from Erasmus University Rotterdam. However, it is also possible to pursue a PhD at ERIM by obtaining external funding such as a personal grant, a company financed project or a special (personal) scholarship fund.

In all cases, whether internally or externally financed, applicants must always meet ERIM's admission requirements in order to enter the ERIM doctoral programme (without any exceptions). Please note that ERIM's admission requirements may differ from those of grant providers and other external project financers, thus securing an external grant does not automatically imply an acceptance to ERIM's Doctoral Programme.

• Required Languages:  English
• Eligible Countries: The scholarship applicant holds the nationality of and is resident and working in one of the countries on the OKP Country list (see the document  Country List for Short courses and Masters  ).
• The scholarship applicant works for one of the following types of national or local organizations: ministries, secondary or higher vocational or academic education institutions, universities, the private sector, commissions or NGOs.
• The scholarship applicant may not work for: a bilateral or multilateral organization, a non-governmental organization that is internationally active and is focused on representing social interests, such as development cooperation, nature, and environmental protection, health or human rights.
• The scholarship applicant is a professional who, in light of his/her (1) role, (2) multiple years of relevant work experience and (3) networks within a theme relevant to local development, is in a position or through his/her employer could be put in a position to apply what he/she has learned in practice.
• The scholarship applicant holds a valid identity document.
• The scholarship applicant has been admitted to the course or program for which he/she wishes an OKP scholarship.
• The scholarship applicant has provided a government statement with the scholarship application if this is required by the local government (see the document  government statement requirement ).
• The scholarship applicant demonstrates that the requested co-funding percentage is available to fund the study.
• The employer of the scholarship applicant supports the scholarship application through a positive reference, declares that it will continue to pay the salary of the scholarship recipient during the program and after his/her return will give the scholarship recipient an opportunity to apply what he/she has learned in practice.
