Essay on my Hobby : My Hobby is Gardening

I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a  form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Gardening can be done on several types of soil and with numerous varieties of yield. Gardening can be of many types such as herb, flowers, vegetables or kitchen, rose, rock, water, and indoor gardening. According to the needs and availability of tools and garden supplies suited for the purpose, we choose the respective criteria.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

Essay on My Garden

According to me, the garden is the best place in a house. It is the place where someone can sit for a while and unwind amidst nature and feel refreshed. The oxygen in the air, sunlight flooding the entire stretch of the open space, the sweet fragrance from the flowers, and the chirping of birds- everything seems to come together to create a cacophony that is magical and therapeutic on the human mind. Nowadays, not too many houses are blessed with a garden. But if one wants to live a peaceful life, he must consider getting a garden for his own abode.

The Plants In My Garden

In my garden, there are various types of plants. Some are flowering plants, some bear fruits and vegetables, while there are some other plants which look simply adorable because of the sheer beauty of their leaves. The flowers that adorn my garden are rose, sunflower, lily, and chrysanthemum. The garden looks stunning when the flowers are in full bloom.

I have cultivated many vegetables in my garden with the help of my grandfather. Tomato, brinjal, ladies finger, and green chilly are among them. I am trying to make my garden an organic garden so that we don’t have to depend upon vegetables bought from the markets. These vegetables that I grow have several health benefits besides being fresh and chemical-free.

There is soft grass all over my garden. The grass is maintained properly and trimmed on a regular basis. This makes the garden an ideal place for different exercises. I like to walk in bare feet in my garden only because of the soft grass cover. Moreover, there is a swing in my garden where I can spend hours swinging on it. I don’t get bored doing any activities in my garden. When it is a holiday, I spend my entire day in my garden doing various activities.

The Gardener

My grandfather is the gardener of my garden. His most favourite place in the house is the garden. He spends his entire day there. He is a perfect example of a true nature lover. He not only experiments with the plants of the garden but also takes care of them like his own children. He brought some unique varieties of flowers last week like climbers, bulbs and perennials. My garden turns out to be the brightest of all because of the flowers. The trimming of the grasses is done by me and I am the only person on whom my grandfather depends a lot.

Every day I wake up with the chirping of the birds. My garden is the safe shelter of various birds. I don’t even know the name of all the birds. Various birds such as the sparrow, pigeon, Indian myna, cuckoo etc come to my garden in the morning. On a rare occasion, one or two migratory birds also pay a visit to my garden. At that time, all the members of my family assemble to observe the beauty of those birds. We treat them like our special guests and offer seeds and water to eat/drink.

My favourite place in my house is the garden. I have developed an emotional attachment with this small stretch of greenery. Last year my garden was totally destroyed by the super cyclone. That incident made me very sad. But I, along with my grandfather, created the garden more beautifully by working day and night diligently. Gardening and seeing the plants bloom gives me the amazing feeling of creating something new.

Everyone should own a garden. It is the best part of the house. Gardens filled with bright colourful flowers are a treat for the eyes. Here are essays on My Garden of varying lengths to help you with the same in your exam. You can choose any My Garden essay as per your need:

Long and Short Essay on My Garden in English

My garden essay 1 (200 words).

My Garden is my favourite part of my house. I can spend hours in my garden without getting bored. It makes me come alive and I just love that feeling.

It is my mother who maintains the garden at our place just as she takes care of various other household chores. She is a huge nature lover and it was her idea to build a beautiful garden at home even though there isn’t a lot of space here. Most of the people in our neighbourhood have converted this place in their house into car parking area or have covered the place to build a small room. But my mother chose to convert this small piece of land into a lovely garden.

Our garden is full of colourful flowers. We have a row of roses on one side and a row of seasonal flowers on the other side. These flowers include marigold, petunia, pansy, hollyhock, aster, alyssum, hibiscus, sunflowers and lilies. It is extremely delightful to see these flowers blooming. My mother ensures that the plants get water and manure regularly so that they grow and bloom the way they should. I also help my mother with these activities.

I am thankful to my mother for giving me such a beautiful place to sit and rejoice nature.

My Garden Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

My garden is full of aromatic herbs. My grandfather loves gardening and I love helping him with this activity. We have grown numerous types of plants in our garden. Most of these are herbs such as aloe vera, basil, mint, coriander, curry plant and lemon grass. This helps in two ways. It adds to the beauty of the house and also provides natural herbs that offer so many health benefits.

My Morning Begins Here

My morning begins in my garden. As I wake up, the first thing I do is to head straight to my garden. It is the best way to begin my day. I just love the essence of this place. My grandfather is already seated on the small bench we have placed there. I go and sit right next to him. I practice deep breathing for around 15 minutes and then have a look at the various plants around the garden. The sight is extremely refreshing. I begin with my daily tasks only after spending around half an hour in my garden.

The Best Way to Spend My Evening

I often go out with my friends in the evening after my tuition classes. It gives me respite after a long day at school and coaching institute. We go to the nearby market to have some evening snacks and chit chat for a while before heading home. While I do look forward to this time every day, I love spending the evening hours in my garden all the more. Many a times, I call my friends to my place. We sit in the garden while my mother serves hot soup and snacks. For me, it is simply the best way to spend the evening hours.

My garden is an integral part of my life. This place can uplift my mood in fraction of seconds. I help my grandfather take care of my garden.

My Garden Essay 3 (400 words)

I just love nature. Hills, valleys, sunsets, sea, plants, trees and flowers – I love everything that is natural and organic. Every time we visit a hill station, I feel like staying there forever. It gets difficult for me to return as I feel so attached to the very essence of the places where nature can be seen in its pure, unadulterated form.

My Garden – My Idea

While I cannot bring along hills and valleys back home, I can certainly feel the enchanting smell of the flowers and plants by growing some at my place. As we were coming back from our trip to Assam, I was missing the lush green tea gardens and the beautiful flowers in the botanical garden there. It was like I had left my heart there. It was then that the idea of growing my own garden sprang in my mind. I spoke about it to my sister and she was equally thrilled.

Since we live in a flat, we did not have a proper area that could be turned into a garden. However, we could certainly fill one of our balconies with different types of flowers and feel their aroma fill in our house.

We spoke about the idea with our parents and they agreed to it on the condition that we will have to take care of the entire thing on our own.

Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

My Garden Essay 4 (500 words)

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers filled our house.

It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

My Garden Essay 5 (600 words)

For me, a garden is an integral part of the house. This is because I have seen one at my place ever since I my childhood. I have learned to crawl, walk and eat in my garden. I have numerous fond memories attached to it and it forms an important part of my life. It is my grandmother who beautified this place. She has put immense efforts in growing the garden and maintaining it.

 Benefits of Gardening:

  • The Gazebo in My Garden

Since we live on the outskirts of the city, we have the luxury of having a big house and quite a big garden. Besides the beautiful trees and flowers that form a part of my garden, there is a beautiful gazebo set up here that adds to its beauty. The gazebo is set in one corner of the garden and it is my favourite spot. My father chose its design and it is appreciated by all.

We host a lot of parties at home and the gazebo is a hot favourite spot of the guests. During the times, when the weather is pleasant, my parents usually plan barbeque in the garden and everyone just loves sitting in the Gazebo with their plate of snacks.

I also love spending some time during the evening hours at this quite place in my garden. Many a times, I also study here. I find it easier to concentrate here compared to other parts of my house.

  • Organic Vegetables and Fruits in My Garden

Besides beautiful rows of leafy plants and multi-hued flowers, my grandmother has also planted many vegetables in our garden. Spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green chillies, carrots and eggplants are among some of the vegetables that grow in my garden. Herbs such as coriander, mint and curry plant have also been planted. All these vegetables grow in abundance in my garden and we often cut and cook them for our meals.

Apart from these, my garden also has quite a few fruit trees. Lemon tree, mango tree, banana tree and papaya tree have always been a part of it. They bear fruits and fill the air with their refreshing smell. Many a times, I have been made to climb the mango tree to pluck the mangoes. It is super fun and I always look forward to it.

Maintaining Garden is not Easy – a tough task

Though having a garden adds to the beauty of the house, it is quite a task to maintain it. Many people love the idea of growing plants and try their hands at it but give up in some time. This is because plants require utmost care. It is essential for you to take care of them on a daily basis in order to keep them fresh and green and help them grow.

Plants do not only require water but also need different types of manures to grow. Hats off to my grandmother who is so dedicated towards taking care of our garden even at this age. She makes sure the plants are watered twice a day and all the required manures are added from time to time. She also ensures that weeds and unwanted plants that hamper the growth of the other plants are removed timely.

We have hired a professional gardener who comes to our place thrice a week and takes care of our garden. My grandmother supervises him and gets the tasks done properly.

Some of the best memories of my childhood are attached to my garden. I love it when my entire family sits together in the garden to have their evening tea. I also love the winter afternoons when we have our lunch in the garden. It is simply amazing. Having a garden at home is blissful.

10 Best Resources for School Garden Lesson Plans

Author: Kimina Jamison // Last updated on April 13, 2020 5 Comments

School gardens are a wonderful way to build a connection between students and the outdoors all while covering necessary subjects in a hands-on environment. A difficult part of running a school garden is finding lessons to follow for the appropriate age group. Many organizations and schools have compiled free lesson plans and resources to help school gardens succeed. Many of these lessons align with STEM or other standards-based requirements, making them more practical for teachers to use.

That all being said, we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the best resources for school garden lesson plans.

1. School Garden Project

Grades:  First-eighth (curriculum has two tracks: second-fifth and first-eighth)

Classroom Size: 18-36 students but can be adapted for smaller group of 6-10 students

Summary: One curriculum, Science in the Garden , is a set of 10 lessons for grades second-fifth. Example topics include plant parts and functions, garden habitat, and soil composition.

The other curriculum, STEM in the garden, provides a series of subjects for grades first-eighth. There are two units in this curriculum: soil and plant parts. Students get to learn through scientific experimentation, playing games, and making field observations.

Related Post: No Till Gardening: To Till Or Not To Till?

Both curriculums are easy to read and follow and provide all additional printed materials.

Having volunteered with this organization personally, I can ensure that their lessons are well thought out and that kids really like them. Each grade studies a different unit, so each year students get to study something new. This curriculum engages classes through tasting, planting, playing games/activities, and questioning.

Usually, each day starts with an introduction inside the classroom, then students move outside and divide into four to five groups of five to seven kids. Each group of kids rotates through the circuit of activities taught by volunteers or educators. Students spend about 5-10 minutes with each educator, then move to the next activity.

By rotating through activities and teachers, it helps keep the attention of the students. They look forward to these lessons and enjoy their time in and outside the garden.

2. Growing Gardens

Grades: K – fifth (curriculum has two tracks: K-second and third-fifth)

Classroom Size: N/A, designed for after-school garden club or summer camp

Summary: The Growing Gardens Youth Grow Lesson Plan Manual provides in-depth information on how to engage with students in the garden in addition to providing eight lesson plans.

Lesson times vary in length; some need 60-120 minutes and others can be completed in five minutes. However, the lessons are in order, so you could easily pull individual ideas from their guide to fit your needs. Some of their fun ideas include making a garden journal, going on a garden scavenger hunt, or playing games such as the “seed packet guessing game”.

Growing Gardens also offers a School Garden Coordinator Certificate training program, which helps build your garden education program at your school/organization. Sessions are held in person in Portland, Oregon over the course of a week and include visits to nearby garden sites.

10. Edible School Yard

Grades: sixth-eighth

Summary: Edible School Yard focuses on middle school education and offers both garden and kitchen lessons. They provide fall and spring rotations that occur in sequence. Again, you could use some of the lessons individually, depending on the time you have.

The sixth-grade lessons set a foundation for garden and kitchen classes including an orientation to the garden and kitchen, how to respect the garden, and lessons on water, decomposition, and bees, for example.

Related Post: Pollinators

During the seventh grade, students build upon this foundation and delve into a series on corn (how to cook with it and it’s importance to the world) as well as how to use a microscope, and a lesson all about our food system.

Lastly in the eighth grade, students delve even further by testing the pH levels of soil, talking about environmental impacts of food choices, and talking about justice and labor relating to agriculture.

This is a really great choice for middle school appropriate lessons and offers a great hands-on experience in both the kitchen and the garden.

Introduction : Everywhere around us we see and witness Nature in its abundance and glory. Of the many ways in which Nature presents itself to us, trees, flowers, vegetables, tiny plants are some. We have all cherished and been amazed at the beauty of fully bloomed flowers. At some point, all of us have wanted to have a tiny patch of land on which to plant flowers; or just wanted to have a flower pot. We may have marvelled at how some vegetables grow from a tiny seed and wanted to grow some ourselves.

What is Gardening : We call the practice of planting, growing and cultivating flowers, small plants, and vegetables as gardening. The process of gardening may seem familiar and similar to that of farming but gardening is often done for the purpose of maintaining beauty, decorating a place around a building, a house or some other place. Gardens are often seen as places where one can relax or engage in other fun inducing activities.

While farming is intended to provide food on a large scale, and only those crops are cultivated which can be sold, gardening as an activity in itself is done for pleasure, as a hobby.

The plants grown in gardening may be planted for the sole purpose of their beautiful flowers or leaves only. Some of them may have medicinal properties and can be used in certain treatments. Some people may also grow a variety of vegetables as a part of gardening.

Essay on Gardening

Gardening and its Benefits

Who hasn’t envied a beautiful garden? Who doesn’t want to have a garden where rose bushes and sunflowers grow in abundance, and the grass feels like velvet when one walks on it?

Of course, a beautiful, well-maintained garden can be pleasing to the eye and relaxing to the mind and spirit. But gardening requires an immense amount of work to make it appealing. Taking gardening up as a hobby can prove to be extremely beneficial to a person. Apart from giving back to the Earth and adding to the greenery of a place, we can reap the benefits of gardening by engaging with it often.

Taking up gardening as a hobby or just something that you enjoy doing occasionally can provide a silent space for you to be one with nature. If you live in an urban area where there is not much access to nature, maintaining a tiny garden can prove to be a therapeutic escape in itself.

Benefits of Gardening : Some of the ways in which gardening can prove to be beneficial are:

  • Gardening relieves stress : Taking time off to work in a garden has been proven to lower the levels of stress we might be carrying. Many hospitals, especially those for patients with mental health problems, engage their patients in gardening because of these reasons.
  • Helps to stay physically fit: Working in a garden helps provide movement to our bodies. This movement constitutes exercise. Digging, shovelling etc in a garden can strengthen our body. Older people can especially benefit from this, since gardening doesn’t require a lot of strength. Getting some kind of light activity can also help us to sleep better at night.
  • Get your Vitamin D : Working in a garden full of sunshine can get you a lot of Vitamin D. This is important to keep our bones and our immunity strong.
  • Plenty of flowers (and vegetables to eat ): Whether you want a garden full of lovely and fragrant flowers, or one full of delicious vegetables, or both, we can all agree that no one would want to say no to the endless supply of flowers to look at and smell, nor to the nutritious vegetables.
  • Attention to beauty : When we engage in gardening, we are required to pay attention to each leaf, each color, each pattern. The attention is not just confined to flowers and other plants but is also extended towards the insects, the bees, and the sounds they make. This activity makes us more attentive to the little details surrounding our garden. The diversity and the details help us communicate with nature, and make us aware of the beauty that surrounds us all the time.
  • Gives us a sense of accomplishment : The process of growing a plant or a tree is a rather long one. Often one requires patience with gardening. In that way, one can feel purposeful and accomplished to watch a tiny seed sprout from the soil into a bustling flower bush or a vegetable.
  • Build a social group : Gardening can be done in a group, with other people who enjoy it as much as you do. Some places have community gardens where people can volunteer together to maintain a garden. Such activities play a significant role in building social relations in a society.

Conclusion :

After all the above mentioned benefits of gardening, it can be fair to say that it is an activity that is healthy and also reaps rewards. Iit is also pleasing to the eye. Everyone likes to look at and enjoy beauty. You can get to choose what to plant in your garden and how to make it your own. It can become an expression of your inner self, and a place where you connect with all your senses. Thereby, gardening is one of the most fulfilling activities one can take part in.

Essay – Visit to a Historical Place

During the summer vacation, our Historical Society arranged a visit to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. A tourist bus was got reserved. We had a safe and comfortable journey to Agra. It was the full moon night when we reached there.

The Taj is a magnificent building, made of white marble. It is situated on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaj Mahal. Twenty thousand labourers worked for twenty two years to build it. The main gateway to the Taj is a three-storeyed building. It stands on a platform of red stone.

From there a causeway leads to the monument. The cause way has a water channel, with fountains in the middle and a double row of cypress trees on either side. There is a big white dome in the middle with four stately minarets on its four sides. Verses from holy Quran are graved on walls. Visitors come to see the Taj and read from every stone the story of the true love of the Queen and the Emperor. The beautiful building is surrounded by a garden.

The Taj looks beautiful at any time, but at night it is no doubt, a sight to see. It glitters in the moonlight and looks like a palace of silver. The Taj is, indeed, the loveliest work of art in the whole world. It is a poem is stone. It in one of the seven wonders of the world.

The bus for Delhi had not yet arrived. So we had to wait. There was a great rush of passengers. They were waiting for their buses. There was a lot of rushing, pushing shouting and wrangling every where. The ladies were sitting in groups. Children were playing here and there. Vendors and hawkers were selling newspapers and eatables. They were also shouting at the top of their voices. There was a rush at the water tap, tea stalls and book stalls. We went to a tea stall. We took tea.

We bought two books to pass time. There were long queues at the booking windows. Soon our bus arrived. I bought a ticket for my friend. He boarded the bus and got a seat near the window. The driver took his seat. The conductor gave a whistle and the bus started. I wished good-bye to my friend.
