Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

  • Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
  • Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
  • Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
  • Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. A better option would be: 

Experienced operations supervisor with 12+ years experience. I’ve utilized data analysis to increase customer satisfaction by an average of 54%, simultaneously reducing overall budgetary costs by an average of 21%. Proven track record of consistently increasing overall efficiency by up to 19% within eCommerce industry.

This summary offers a quick glance at some of your best achievements by using quantifiable metrics to pack a bigger punch.

Let’s look at some examples of objectives.

A poor objective could look like:

Searching for a new warehouse supervisor role for more experience in inventory management. Skilled in accounting and team management.

This objective adds nothing that the recruiter wouldn’t be able to get from reading the rest of your resume, so it would be best to leave out entirely.

You could make it stronger with something like:

Dedicated warehouse manager with 2 years of financially savvy accounting experience using tools like Quickbooks, plus outstanding team management skills. Looking for a role at Garden Entertainments to sharpen my expertise in inventory management to streamline the company’s warehouse operations.

With an objective like this, a recruiter can quickly see why your interests and skills fit the role, as well as what you’d like to get out of the position. Major score!

Tip 3: Quantify your impact as a supervisor

The most surefire method to stand out amidst a sea of text is  leveraging metrics that quantify your impact . Not sure what kind of quantitative data or stats to include? We’ve got you covered!

  • Productivity levels:  If your supervision style helped improve overall productivity levels, freeing up more time for other tasks, make a note of it.
  • Costs:  Whether you reduced labor costs, minimized extraneous spending, or otherwise helped to save the company money, include the amount or percentage.

There’s no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” approach with resumes. Sure, you’d be able to send out 50 applications in no time, but this is a quality game, not a quantity game.

Let’s make this advice more practical and look at some real-world examples of how you might want to tailor your supervisor resume based on the kind of job you’re applying for.

Start filling in your resume’s contents by first listing your contact information . 

The contact information section consists of: 

  • Your name and surname.
  • Your professional title.
  • Your phone number.

  • Your location (city and state/country).

#4. Describe Your Professional Experience 

The work experience section is the most important part of any resume. 

That’s the first section recruiters will check to see if you have the right supervisory experience and skills to take up a new role. 

Here’s how you should format your work experience section on your supervisor resume:

  • Start with your current or most recent position and go backward in time from there. 
  • Begin each entry with your professional title, followed by the company’s name, the dates you worked there, and 3-5 of your accomplishments and responsibilities in bullet points.  
  • List fewer bullet points the further back you go into your work history and keep your work entries relevant (e.g. your experience as a server at a restaurant  10 years back won’t help you land the role of production supervisor). 

Simply listing out your work experience as a supervisor, though, isn’t enough. You need to write it in such a way that it’s going to convince the recruiter that you’ve got what it takes to do the job.

Here are some tips on how you can make this happen:

  • Achievements look much better on a resume than responsibilities, so list as many as you can think of (e.g. having only achievements and no responsibilities under each work entry is totally acceptable). 
  • Quantify your achievements whenever it is possible - numbers speak louder than words, sometimes. To do that, you can use the formula “accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]” (or, start with a verb, numerically measure what you accomplished, provide a baseline for comparison, and detail what you did to achieve your goal.)
  • Have a hard time thinking up achievements? That’s totally fine. Your work responsibilities are also important and can look great on your resume if you use action words to describe them.

As a supervisor - especially one with plenty of work experience under your belt - your education section is less important than your experience and your skills.

Economic Development: • Conduct and or coordinate with consultants studies related to economic development needs for the city. • Attend all economic development board meetings and assist the board in their activities. • Perform other economic development related tasks as required.

Management/Special Projects: • Assist in annual goals & visioning strategic plan process in coordination with consultant. • Review administrative procedures; analyze alternatives and make recommendations to improve support services. • Perform research and analysis; calculate and analyze data to be used in periodic reports. • Participate in special projects including planning and implementation of special programs and events and complex research of new programs and services. • Perform other duties as assigned.

TYPICAL DECISIONS: Position requires independent judgment on work priorities and deciding how issues should be addressed and issues resolved; formulates procedures and develops strategy for implementation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of departmental and City organization, functions, policies, procedures. Aptitude includes software applications, budgeting procedures and administrative analysis, economic development.

Skills: Must have ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Ability to learn Acrobat Professional, Adobe Photo Shop, Adobe Premier, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in Public or Business Administration.

Experience: Two years of experience in Municipal Management exposure. Master’s Degree in Public or Business administration may replace work experience requirement.

The Human Resources Manager reports directly to the VP for Finance and Administration/CFO. This position is responsible for developing and executing Merit's talent management strategy. This includes development of talent attraction/retention programs, providing interpretation and consultation on human resources policies and procedures to management and staff, as well as counseling and assisting managers and employees in resolution of problems and grievances. While ensuring that the organization is in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Human Resources Manager works in partnership with the VP for Finance and Administration/CFO in developing, implementing and evaluating HR policies, programs, functions and activities. The position formulates partnerships across the University HR function to deliver value-added service to management and employees that reflect Merit's business objectives.

As the Human Resources Manager, this position's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

HR Operations (50%)

  • Develops, implements and updates HR policies and procedures to be effective and efficient for all involved (E)
  • Work with leadership and staff to develop Merit's culture and increase retention (E)
  • Work with leadership, staff and appropriate University resources to navigate progressive discipline and resolve complex employee relations issues (E)
  • Guide managers during their recruitment efforts for all positions, providing leadership and tools for the applicant screening and interview process (E)
  • Assist hiring managers in writing optimized and effective position postings
  • Provide guidance and input on the career paths of employees, workforce planning, succession planning and business unit restructures (E)

Supervisor wants to put fine in ‘rearview mirror’.

Old Lycoming Township Supervisor David W. Shirn is responding to an order from the state Ethics Commission fining him $1,250 for a transaction between the municipal government and his auto dealership several years ago and for filing what the ethics commission described as “deficient” statements of financial interests.

“The Ethics Commission correctly recognizes in the Order that the allegations against Mr. Shirn in his capacity as a township supervisor were not proven to be of serious enough nature to warrant more than the minimum civil penalty — despite the commission’s ability to impose larger fines, issue restitution, and recommend prosecution for criminal charges,” the emailed statement from Shirn read. “This supports Mr. Shirn’s position he maintained throughout the process — which is that the facts will speak for themselves.”

“Despite believing he would ultimately succeed in an appeal of the order, Mr. Shirn wanted to put this in his ‘rearview mirror,’ “ the statement continued. “Mr. Shirn looks forward to continuing his service for the township in his capacity as a township supervisor.”
