IMB Global Challenges top-up

The Global Challenges PhD top-up offers a per annum top up to the UQ Graduate School Scholarship plus $5,000 support for a placement on top of the $2,000 Student Development fund (over the period of the candidature) to outstanding domestic and eligible international onshore applicants .

The PhD projects on offer will give each student the opportunity to take a deep dive into a specialised topic and research discipline in one laboratory and within our broad-ranging approach. Each project will provide the rich foundational research training gained by completing a PhD and an opportunity to make a unique contribution to the field of knowledge. By conducting these projects within a cohort of other students, also aiming to broadly address the identified themes, the collective will form an intellectual hub, together, solving these global challenges.

Importantly, the top-up includes specialised training in each theme and cutting-edge research techniques, tailored transferable skills training and support to conduct a placement nationally or internationally with a related partner. Collectively, these will form four pillars of support for the research project and create job-ready graduates with links to the national and international research, entrepreneurial and industry community. This year's theme is 'Drugs inspired by nature' .

To qualify for a Global Challenges top-up, you must:

  • Apply for a participating  PhD Projec t
  • Submit your PhD application before the deadline (check back for 2025 deadline)

In your application, ensure you:

  • Select ‘My higher degree is not collaborative’
  • Select 'I am applying for, or have been awarded a scholarship or sponsorship'.
  • Select ‘Other’, then add ‘ IMB Global Challenges + identified theme’

How to get a PhD

How to get a PhD

Study tips Published 5 Apr, 2022  ·  4-minute read

Trying to wrap your head around how PhD programs work? We don’t blame you. Sometimes it feels like you need a PhD just to figure out how to get a PhD.

So, with a little help from our academics and some UQ PhD candidates, we’ve broken down the application and preparation process into 10 manageable steps:

  • Complete prior research
  • Choose your topic
  • Find a PhD supervisor
  • Write your PhD proposal
  • Identify potential scholarships
  • Gather required documents and apply
  • Determine if you'll continue working during your PhD
  • Calculate how long you’ll be researching your PhD
  • Develop the traits and behaviours of a good PhD student
  • Apply and get accepted

Let’s discuss how to get a PhD in Australia – from choosing your topic to getting stuck into the actual research.

1. Complete prior research (if necessary)

You don’t necessarily need a master’s degree to start a PhD. However, you do need to have completed extensive research. This might involve an academic research program (such as a bachelor's degree with an honours year or a Master of Philosophy ), research conducted in your professional career, or a combination of both. The important thing is that you can demonstrate experience in conducting effective research, as this is a key part of the PhD selection criteria.

Learn more about doing a PhD without a master's degree

2. Choose your topic

Whether you’re developing a thesis on a topic you’ve already worked on or branching out into a new area of interest, you’ll want to know early what kind of topic you want to research for your PhD. Finding a niche that sparks your curiosity is important for ensuring you’ll stay inspired during the 3+ years ahead.

Keep in mind that you generally have two options here. You can complete a PhD by:

  • joining an existing research project in an area that interests you
  • start a fresh research project that aligns with your specific goals.

Get tips for choosing your PhD topic or explore available research projects at UQ

3. Find a PhD supervisor

One of the essential steps to consider when thinking about how to get a PhD is finding someone to guide you through the process.

Approaching academics about your PhD can be intimidating, but shortlisting and selecting the most appropriate person / team to supervise your research project is important. By choosing your mentor carefully, you can ensure you’ve got someone in your corner who understands your research, has relevant expertise, and will be there to support you throughout your journey.

Learn how to find the right PhD supervisor

4. Write your PhD proposal

Check with your supervisor to see if they require a formal PhD proposal (most will, but not all). If so, with their guidance, it’s time to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

Even if your supervisor doesn't explicitly ask for one, a PhD proposal is a valuable document for outlining the scope of your research and giving your project its initial momentum – so it might be worth writing one either way.

Learn how to write a good PhD proposal

5. Identify potential scholarships

Dedicating yourself to research sometimes means sacrificing your income in the short term, though it can lead to more financial security in the long term . To help support yourself during your studies, you can apply for PhD scholarships and funding.

Learn how to get a PhD scholarship

6. Gather required documents and apply

It’s time to jump online and do the official application process. Aside from your research proposal, you should also prepare to provide your:

  • academic CV
  • academic transcript
  • degree certificate(s)
  • English language documents (if needed)
  • ID (such as a passport)
  • two references / letters of recommendation from people who can comment on your research experience.

Learn how to apply online for a UQ PhD

7. Determine if you'll continue working during your PhD

Some PhD candidates continue doing part-time or casual work while completing their research. However, this isn't easy and may not be feasible in most cases; it takes serious time-management skills to juggle any kind of job alongside a full-time PhD. So, think carefully about whether you’d like to keep working in some capacity or commit your attention fully to your research.

Learn more about working while doing a PhD

8. Calculate how long you’ll be researching your PhD

To complete your PhD within the standard 3.5-year* timeframe, you'll need to be organised with a clear project plan. Of course, the very nature of research is that you'll discover unexpected things and take unplanned detours along the way. So, your plan should include contingencies for any obstacles you might hit to ensure you still complete your research on time.

*In special cases, you may be able to request an extension of your tuition for up to 4 years, but that is the maximum time allowed for a PhD.

Explore how long a PhD takes

9. Develop the traits and behaviours of a good PhD student

We know you’ve already got what it takes, but there are some skills and attributes you could cultivate or practise to make your upcoming journey a little smoother. Between writing your proposal and meeting with potential supervisors, be sure to set some time aside to work on yourself as well.

Discover what makes a good PhD student

10. Apply and get accepted

All the preparation is done. You’ve equipped all the gear, chosen your guide and mapped out your route. It's time to apply and set the wheels in motion.

ANU funds and administers a range of scholarships for PhD, Professional Doctorate and Master by research programs. The University also administers a number of scholarships funded by the Australian Government and other sources external to the University. The University's aim is to attract research degree applicants who have a proven capacity for research.

Many graduate research scholarships are offered by individual ANU Colleges. You are, therefore, strongly encouraged to contact the relevant ANU College, or a prospective supervisor, before lodging an application to discuss the proposed research topic and opportunities.

Central Scholarship Rounds

ANU has two central scholarship application rounds per year. Central Scholarships include the Australian Government Research Training Program and University Research Scholarships. If you have applied for admission into a HDR program before the scholarship deadlines below and selected that you are interested in a scholarship you will automatically be considered in the next available scholarship round. There is no separate application form for the central scholarship round except for current HDR candidates who would like to be considered in a subsequent scholarship round by completing the ' Request for a current ANU student to be considered for a HDR Scholarship form '.

Eligibility

Applicants for research degree scholarships must hold a bachelor degree with at least upper second class honours although competition is such that applicants usually have to hold a first class honours degree to be competitive (and for some scholarships, this is mandatory), or a Master by coursework or a Graduate Diploma (which must be completed at a level equivalent to first or upper second-class honours) degree from a recognised University.

In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and/or research experience may be considered.

Some scholarships are open both to applicants who are Australian citizens/permanent residents or New Zealand citizens and those who are nationals of other countries, while others are open to one or other category only.

How to apply

Applications for research scholarships are completed when you apply for admission.

Research Program applications may be made at any time of year, but there are closing dates for scholarship applications and most scholarships must be taken up within a certain time-frame. Further information on the application process can be found on the ANU postgraduate research application information webpage.

Conditions of award

Conditions of award are the terms under which a scholarship is established and accepted. The conditions of award outline the duration of, and eligibility for the scholarship as well as a scholar's entitlement to leave and reimbursement.

Conditions may change from year to year. A scholar is bound by the conditions that they sign and accept in the year that they commence their scholarship.

Notification & acceptance

Research scholarship offers are emailed to successful applicants.

For students who have not yet commenced, an email will be sent to the email address you supplied when applying for admission. For continuing students, an email will be sent to your ANU student email account.

Scholarship offers normally need to be accepted within two weeks of the offer being made, however, you should check the date listed on your letter of offer.

Some scholarships can be extended for six months. Please check the conditions of award specific to your scholarship to see if you are eligible to apply for an extension. Please note that extensions can only be granted based on circumstances beyond the scholar's control related to research - not matters of a personal nature.

You can apply to extend your scholarship using the  Manage My Degree eForm, via ISIS . The Chair of your supervisory panel, the Head of Department and the Delegated Authority need to endorse your request before the extension can be processed.

Scholarship (stipend) payments are made in fortnightly instalments into your nominated bank account.

To nominate which bank account you want the the payments made to, use the Bank Account and Financial Distribution Details form.

Scholarship overpayments may occur when unpaid leave requests are not received prior to the appropriate Human Resources (HR) pay period cut-off date.

If a scholarship overpayment has occurred as a result of a leave of absence request, notification will be sent in writing by the HR Division. Repayment of overpaid amounts are required in accordance with the instructions from the University. Candidates who remain in debt to the University will not be permitted to submit their theses for examination or to graduate.

Payments can also be made for travel and removal reimbursement and dependent child allowances, depending on the conditions of award.

Cessation of Payments

Scholarships payments will generally cease:

  • at the conclusion of the period outlined in the scholarship conditions of award.  A specific date will sometimes appear in offer letters; or
  • on submission of the thesis for examination; or
  • on the date on which the recipient withdraws or ceases to attend the University other than for approved absences; or
  • if a recipient is no longer meeting or has breached the conditions of award; or
  • if a recipient breaches academic or behavioural standards set by the University under the Academic Misconduct & Discipline Rules.

Conditions of award vary from scholarship to scholarship so it is essential that you check the specifics in the conditions of award that relate to your scholarship.

Changes & dates

The HR pay period cut-off date for paperwork relating to stipend payments is usually one week prior to the relevant pay day.

Paperwork relating to stipend payments must be received by the Graduate Research Office at least three working days prior to the HR pay period cut-off date to ensure that the paperwork can be processed in time.

Incomplete and incorrect forms will delay the processing of requests and may mean the paperwork is unable to be processed in time for the HR pay period cut-off.  The ANU Pay Period Cut off Calendar can be found here .

Scholarships

Scholarships

There are a range of government and University funded scholarships available to support you during your Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidature. These scholarships provide support with a range of expenses associated with undertaking HDR research including living expenses, tuition waivers, and ancillary costs associated with your research.

HDR scholarships can include one or more of the following types of support*:

  • Stipend – this is a living allowance paid to the student fortnightly for the duration of the scholarship to help with living expenses. Please be aware that stipends are intended to contribute towards living expenses for the student themselves and may not be sufficient to fully cover the cost of living, particularly if accompanied by dependents.
  • Fee Offset/Waiver – this pays tuition fees that would otherwise be paid by the student for the duration of the scholarship. Note: this is a financial arrangement within the university and is not paid to the student.
  • Allowances – reimbursement for costs associated with undertaking HDR research such as relocation costs, and Overseas Health Cover.

* NOTE:    If you are successful in obtaining a scholarship, your offer letter will provide details of which, if any, of these types of support you have been awarded.

Scholarships Available for HDR Students

Research training program stipend and university of adelaide research scholarships.

The most widely awarded scholarships available to HDR students are the Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship (RTPS) and the University of Adelaide Research Scholarship (UARS) . Both of these awards provide a stipend ( living allowance ) and fee offset/ waiver for the duration of the scholarship. Detailed information about additional allowances and conditions of these scholarships are provided in the Conditions of Award .

Applications for RTPS and UARS scholarships primarily occur through the scholarship rounds held prior to the beginning of semester ( see Applying for HDR Scholarships – Opportunities i n the Competitive Rounds ).

Finding Information about HDR Scholarships on Offer

Information about all of the HDR Scholarships on offer can be found in the University Scholarships Database . The database includes scholarship opportunities for future, current and past students, such as external funding opportunities and travel scholarships.

Entries in the database include information about the background of the award, what is included, eligibility criteria, and how to apply for the award.

The database is updated on a continuous basis as awards become available. If you are seeking a scholarship, you should check the database regularly so that you do not miss an opportunity.

Applying for HDR Scholarships - Opportunities in the Competitive Rounds

Scholarships are mainly awarded in competitive rounds that align with the primary intakes of students at the start of the year and mid-way through the year. These rounds are known as the Major Round (February/March intake) and the Midyear Round (July/August intake).

Separate Major and Midyear rounds are held for domestic and international applicants. This ensures that successful international applicants have sufficient time to make the arrangements to move to Australia while also providing sufficient time for domestic students to complete any current programs before the round is held.

Scholarships Available in the Competitive Rounds

Two principal types of major scholarships are offered in the competitive scholarship rounds: Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships and University of Adelaide Research Scholarships . Whether these scholarships are offered in a specific scholarship round is subject to the availability of scholarships at that time. The scholarship round information tables ( see Domestic Round , International Round below) identify which scholarships will be offered in a specific round.

  • Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships ( Domestic , International )
  • University of Adelaide Research Scholarships ( Domestic , International )
  • Applicants who do not hold an Honours degree, postgraduate qualifications with a significant research component, or have significant research experience and/or publications will be considered for the University of Adelaide Research Scholarship s ( Domestic , International )

Further information about eligibility for these principal scholarships is included in the Conditions of Award .

A range of other scholarships may also be offered during the competitive scholarship rounds, as permitted by funding availability. Information about any additional awards being offered during a specific scholarship round are provided in the online application system . It is recommended that applicants carefully consider the information provided about these scholarships when they complete their application, as applicants may also be eligible for these additional awards.

Domestic Round

The domestic rounds include both domestic applicants and international applicants who are current students or recent graduates of the University of Adelaide. A student is considered a 'recent graduate' if they have completed their University of Adelaide qualification within the last 2 years (4 semesters).

Please note: international students who are applying in the domestic rounds as a current or recent University of Adelaide student will need to apply as an international applicant ( see here ) within the domestic round application period.

International Round

The international rounds are reserved for international applicants only. International students who are current students or recent graduates* of the University of Adelaide should refer to the Domestic Round Dates – but will need to submit applications using the International application system.

University of Adelaide Students/ Recent University of Adelaide Graduates Rounds

The following students are eligible to apply in these rounds:

  • University of Adelaide students who are in the final semester of their current program
  • University of Adelaide students who have recently completed their program within the last 2 years (4 semesters)

Refer to the scholarships page for details about  Major scholarships available  in the competitive rounds.

Scholarship Selection Guidelines for the Competitive Rounds

The number of scholarships on offer in each competitive scholarship round is subject to funding availability and these scholarships are awarded based on merit. Scholarship applications are assessed based on a combination of academic merit, research experience, and alignment with the University of Adelaide’s strategic goals.  To provide yourself with the best chance at being selected for a scholarship, ensure that you include as much detail as possible in your application about:

  • your qualifications
  • your grades
  • your publications, and
  • your research relevant work experience

If you have previously studied overseas, your qualifications from any overseas institutions will be assessed in comparison to the Australian Quality Framework (AQF). If your grades do not compare with the Australian system, your results will be scaled accordingly to ensure that your application can be assessed fairly.

If you are currently enrolled as an HDR student, please note that in assessing your application consideration will only be given to work completed prior to your current HDR.

Scholarship applications from applicants who have completed a Bachelor degree and no postgraduate qualifications will be assessed using the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) from their undergraduate program.

Scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked applicants in the round. Whether an applicant is awarded a scholarship is determined by the quality of their application relative to the other applications in the round.

NOTE: If you are currently enrolled as an HDR student, consideration will only be given to work completed prior to your current HDR.

Applying for HDR Scholarships - Out of Round Opportunities

In addition to the competitive scholarship rounds there are other opportunities which include externally funded major awards, supplementary scholarships, industry programs and placements, allowances for operating costs, and travel scholarships. These scholarships are listed online in the University Scholarships Database . They usually require a separate and specific application and you will find this information attached to the funding opportunity listed.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

You will need to complete an online admission and scholarship application. You can find the page to apply here . Please select at the top of the page if you are applying as a domestic or international student, and the page will show you the dates for each scholarship round currently available. Work your way down the steps, read each section and you will be directed how to apply online.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship in the competitive rounds?

Yes, you can apply for as many scholarships as you would like (and are eligible for). However, please be aware that if you are successful, whether you can hold multiple scholarships is determined by the rules of award for the individual scholarship.

Where do I find a supervisor?

For information on how to connect with a supervisor, please see Step 3 of How to Apply .

I am currently completing a Master of Philosophy, and wish to apply for PhD admission & scholarship in the competitive round. What is the deadline to submit my thesis?  Domestic and onshore international applicants completing a Higher Degree by Research qualification in the same semester of application at an Australian university (University of Adelaide only for international students) will only be eligible for consideration if they have submitted their thesis for examination by the scholarship closing date. Note: examination results must be provided within 3 months of the scholarship closing date.

Will the publications and/or research experience I have gained since completing my qualification(s) add weight to my application? If you ensure that your publication(s) and/or relevant research experience is detailed in your application and uploaded Structured CV, it will be considered. However, the Graduate Scholarships Committee will pay close attention to the quality of the journal in which the work is published as well as your contribution to the publication. Research outputs are usually assessed in light of the opportunities you might have had subsequent to your initial graduation.

My previous scholarship application was unsuccessful.  Can I reapply for a scholarship?

If you have not yet enrolled in your academic program, yes you can reapply for a scholarship. If you have previously applied for admission and a scholarship, and were unsuccessful, you can reapply in any subsequent round.

If you have already enrolled in your academic program, please see the question below.

I have enrolled in my academic program.  Can I apply / reapply for scholarships?

Yes. If you are currently enrolled in an HDR and have sufficient candidature left, you can apply for scholarships.

  • For a PhD scholarship, you must have a minimum of 2 years candidature remaining as of 1 January (Major Round) or 1 July (Midyear Round) to be eligible to apply for a scholarship
  • For a Masters scholarship, you must have a minimum of 6 months candidature remaining as of 1 January (Major Round) or 1 July (Midyear Round) to be eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Please note: Only the work completed prior to your enrolment in the HDR study for which the scholarship is being sought will be considered in assessing your application.

Are there any opportunities for industry placements?

Incorporating industry engagement into your HDR program provides unique opportunities and a strong complement to your academic studies and will give you a head start in future employment opportunities.

More information about these opportunities can be found here: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/career-development/industry-opportunities

Can I apply for a tuition fee waiver?

The University of Adelaide does not offer tuition fee waiver only scholarships. Tuition fee waivers are associated with major scholarships awarded to students. Please apply in a scholarship round to be considered for a scholarship. If you are successful, a fee waiver will be included as part of your scholarship offer.

When will I know the result of my scholarship application?

Domestic applicants

We will begin releasing outcomes from the date listed for the relevant competitive scholarship round on the website . You will be notified of the outcome of your scholarship application at the same time that you are notified whether you have been successful in your application for admission (i.e. in the same correspondence).

Your scholarship outcome will not be released until all of your academic results have been finalised (and you have provided appropriate evidence to the Adelaide Graduate Research School), and all aspects of your admission application have been approved.

International applicants

We will begin releasing outcomes from the date listed for the relevant competitive scholarship round on the website . You will be notified of the outcome of your scholarship application separately from your admission outcome notification.

There may be compliance checks and other relevant approval processes that need to be completed before a scholarship outcome can be determined.  You will be advised of the outcome of your application as soon as a decision is made.

National industry phd program.

The Australian Government is investing $296 million to build a bedrock of research talent skilled in university–industry collaboration across the sector under the Increase Workforce Mobility initiative. This includes funding to establish the National Industry PhD Program to support the Government’s commitment to add 1,800 Industry PhDs over 10 years.

About the Program

An Industry PhD is a doctoral program designed with an industry application. Under appropriate academic and industry supervision, PhD candidates undertake a co-designed research project with university and industry participation.

The National Industry PhD Program will support PhD candidates to undertake industry-focused research projects and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to better translate university research into commercialisation outcomes. Upon completion, candidates will have the ability to work at the interface of research and industry, and across the sectors in future.

The Program consists of two streams:

  • Industry Linked PhD stream: This stream is for outstanding PhD candidates to undertake research projects co-designed by university and industry, with opportunities to be embedded in an industry setting and participate in a 12-week training program.
  • Industry Researcher PhD stream: This stream is for highly capable industry professionals who are supported by their employers to undertake PhD projects in partnership with a university while retaining industry employment and salary benefits.

For more information, please visit the adjacent Program  website hosted by the delivery partner, Campus Plus.

Applicants : International students and/or Domestic students (Australian citizens/permanent residency status).

Application closing date: 20 June 2024

This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated candidates in Power System Operation and Planning with Distributed Energy Resources to work with world-renowned senior researchers (IEEE Fellows and Editor in IEEE Transactions) and an emerging mid-career researcher(s) on an international collaborative project that involved four IEEE Fellows , multiple industries, and research fellows. Two senior professors from Federation University are involved with the project, Professor Syed Islam (IEEE Life Fellow) and Professor Nima Amjady (IEEE Fellow, Editor in IEEE Transactions) , supported by a strong team of researchers, computation and lab facilities including opportunities for internship in Australia and overseas. The research team also has strong connections with international research leaders on power and energy in the UK, USA, Canada and other locations. The position will provide significant opportunities for high-impact publications and the opportunity to work with stakeholders from the power and energy sectors nationally and internationally.

Applicants should contact the supervisory team via e-mail ( [email protected] or [email protected] ) before applying.

The applicant must submit a detailed resume with publication records and a 1200-word research proposal/plan .

How to Apply: Domestic students should apply using the HDR Domestic Application form . International students should apply using the StudyLink application system.

Commencement date: Successful applicants will be expected to commence in September 2024 . However, the successful candidate may negotiate the commencement date.

Research Project Outline

Project title: developing load time series analysis and forecasting methods.

This project involves developing load time series using historical data and real-time information from sources like smart meters. The candidate will analyse the obtained data.

  • Signal processing tools in both the time domain and frequency domain, such as volatility analysis tools in the time and frequency domain.
  • Artificial intelligence tools, such as recent versions of deep neural networks.

The HDR candidate should be able to develop a tool based on data mining and deep learning technologies that can accurately predict electric load using historical load data and other relevant influencing factors. The tool should be able to generate multi-step-ahead load forecasts in the presence of electric vehicle parking lots and distributed energy resources, which is crucial in the planning and operation of today electric power utilities.

Eligibility: Electrical or Computer Engineering Degree with good mathematical and programming skills. Student from Applied Mathematics are also encouraged to apply.

Project title: Bi-level uncertainty-aware DER aggregation planning tool

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) may not fully benefit the power system if they act independently. Additionally, their uncertain and conflicting interactions may even harm the system. Moreover, their uncertainties may cause the system operating conditions to deviate from the planned conditions, resulting in a suboptimal or even infeasible system operating point. In this project, the prospective HDR candidate addresses these essential requirements by optimizing the aggregation of DERs while considering their various relevant uncertainties.

Eligibility: Electrical Engineering Degree with good mathematical and programming skills.

As a child, Beau Windon’s aim was simply to finish high school. Now he’s on his way to completing a PhD, thanks to generous scholarship support from RMIT.

School was not a fun time for Wiradjuri man Beau Windon. As a child he was diagnosed with ADHD, Autism and OCD which, he says, put a target on his back for bullies. And at home, generational trauma led to other challenges.

“Coming from an Indigenous background, my family had a mistrust of the school system and there was no expectation to finish high school,” he says.

Beau intended to leave school as soon as he legally could, but when his older sister dropped out, he decided to hang in there.

"I wanted someone in our family to have finished high school."

After completing high school in 2005, Beau spent the next nine years working a variety of unfulfilling casual jobs. When he moved to Melbourne in 2014, a question from his therapist changed everything.

“She asked me what I would like to do if money was no object and there were no other barriers. I love storytelling and I used to write a lot as a teenager, so I thought, maybe writing?”

With the help of a support worker, Beau applied for some courses and was accepted into RMIT’s Associate Degree of Professional Writing and Editing

In his first year of study, he received a scholarship of $2,500 and a grant to buy a laptop.

Image of Beau Windon inside RMIT's Ngarara Willim Centre.

The scholarship took some of the financial pressure off and having a laptop meant I could study at home instead of using the shared computers at uni, which always gave me anxiety.

It took Beau four years to complete the program part-time and he graduated in December 2019.

After seeing how successful Beau was at uni, his parents changed their mind about his education. “Mum and Dad both flew to Melbourne for the ceremony. It was a huge matter of pride for my family. Not only did I do it, but I graduated with distinction.”

He was keen to continue studying, but years surviving on the disability support pension and part-time jobs meant finances were tight.

Thankfully Ngarara Willim – RMIT’s dedicated support service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students – reached out. They supported him to apply for scholarships and he was awarded an RMIT Study Support Scholarship of $8,000 per year. It covered his Bachelor and Honours degrees over three years.

“$8,000 might not seem like a lot but when you haven’t had much, it’s amazing,” he says.

"Before receiving the scholarship there were times when I only had dinner three times a week. I’d make those meals big and nutritious and then eat cereal and things like that the rest of the time."

During his Honours degree, Beau investigated the complexities of neurodivergent writing.

“The whole Honours year was so rejuvenating and it got me excited about writing again. My supervisor told me that the research and practice I was doing would shuffle really easily into a PhD in Media and Communications.”

In 2022 Beau was the winner of a Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards for self-told stories by writers living with a disability.

“The judges’ comments made me think ‘yeah, I want to do a PhD and continue down that track’,” he says.

Being accepted into the PhD program and receiving an RMIT Indigenous Higher Degree by Research Scholarship to support him through it, has been life changing.

“Not only am I able to eat but I'm able to pay rent without going into financial distress. It's such an unusual feeling having this extra money to be able to buy things like new clothes. It’s removed the anxiety about how I’m going to survive.”
