Pengertian Simple Past Tense

Dalam memahami tense, kamu dapat mencoba untuk menerapkannya kepada percakapan sehari-hari, dimana simple past tense sendiri dapat digunakan untuk menceritakan hari yang sudah lampau. Buku berjudul The 1st Students Choice Changing Times Changing Tenses ini akan membantu kamu dalam menyusun kalimat yang tepat untuk keterangan waktu tertentu.

Rumus Simple Past Tense

Pola kalimat simple past tense terbagi menjadi 2 rumus, yaitu verbal simple past tense dan nominal simple past tense.

Verbal Simple Past

Contoh kalimat verbal simple past tense:

My mom and I went to the zoo yesterday (Saya dan ibu pergi ke kebun binatang kemarin)
I played football last week (Saya bermain bola minggu lalu)
Arini did not attend my birthday party (Arini tidak menghadiri pesta ulang tahun saya)
Last monday, We didn’t come to the opening ceremony (Senin kemarin, kami tidak datang ke upacara pembukaan)
Did you go to the school yesterday? (Apakah kamu pergi ke sekolah kemarin?)
Did your dad give you money? (Apakah ayahmu memberikanmu uang)

Nominal Simple Past

Was digunakan untuk subjek I, She, He, It

Were digunakan untuk subjek You, They, We

Contoh kalimat nominal simple past tense

I was here last night (Semalam saya ada disini)
We were late yesterday (Kami semua terlambat kemarin)
He was not happy because of me (Dia tadi tidak senang karena saya)
They were not home last night (Mereka tidak ada di rumah tadi malam)
Was she pretty? (Apakah dia cantik?)
Were you at Dina’s house? (Apakah kamu tadi ada di rumah Dina?)

Regular Verb dan Irregular Verb

Dalam memahami kata kerja ini sendiri bukanlah hal yang mudah dan memerlukan ingatan serta latihan terus menerus. Bagi Grameds yang ingin belajar dan menghafalkan kata kerja yang ada pada tenses dapat membaca Kamus Lengkap New Phrasal Verb Dictionary (English-Indonesia) yang menyediakan kata kerja setiap kata dan juga terjemahannya.

Pada simple past tense, kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja bentuk kedua (V2). Untuk regular verb, kata kerja selalu ditambahkan akhiran -ed, -d atau -ied dari bentuk dasar. Sedangkan untuk irregular verb adalah kata kerja tidak beraturan sehingga bentuknya berubah dari bentuk dasar.

I cooked fried rice for breakfast (Saya memasak nasi goreng untuk sarapan tadi)
She borrowed my pen (Dia meminjam pulpenku)
Baby cried last night (Bayi menangis semalam)

Irregular Verb

Bentuk kata kerja past tense (V2) pada irregular verb, berubah dari bentuk kata kerja dasarnya. Seringkali kita dibuat bingung dengan menentukan kata pada V2 ini. Nah, untuk memudahkan Grameds, mari pahami perubahan bentuk kata kerja pada irregular verb dalam tabel berikut:

Last month, I went to the zoo with my friends (Bulan lalu, saya pergi ke kebun binatang bersama teman-teman)
You broke my heart into pieces (Kamu menghancurkan hatiku hingga berkeping-keping)

Adverb of Frequency

Karena tenses merupakan kalimat yang berkaitan dengan waktu, maka tentu ada keterangan waktunya. Perlu diingat, bahwa keterangan waktu yang digunakan adalah keterangan waktu lampau. Diantaranya adalah :

Yesterday : kemarin

The day before yesterday : sehari sebelum kemarin

Last night : tadi malam

Last week : pekan lalu

Last month : bulan lalu

A few days ago : beberapa hari lalu

Two weeks ago : dua minggu lalu

Just now : tadi/baru saja

In 2010 : di tahun 2010

A long time ago : dahulu kala

Penggunaan Simple Past Tense

1. Menjelaskan kejadian di masa lampau dalam waktu yang pasti.

Contoh kalimatnya:

I ate oatmeal this morning (Saya makan oatmeal tadi pagi)
She met her mother last night (Dia bertemu dengan ibunya tadi malam)
My brother didn’t answer my call that day (Kakak saya tidak menjawab telepon saya saat itu)

2. Menjelaskan kejadian di masa lampau dan telah selesai saat itu juga.

I went to the market yesterday (Saya pergi ke pasar kemarin)
She gave me this doll 2 days ago (Dia memberikan boneka ini dua hari yang lalu)
I was sick yesterday (Saya kemarin sakit)

3. Menjelaskan kejadian yang berulang kali atau menjadi kebiasaan di masa lalu.

I went to the beach every morning, when I was in Bali. (Saya pergi ke pantai setiap pagi, ketika saya di Bali)
My mom visited me every year, until I graduated (Ibu saya mengunjungi saya setiap tahun hingga saya lulus)
I often brought my lunch to school, when I was in Junior High School (Saya sering membawa bekal makan siang ke sekolah)

4. Menjelaskan perasaan atau emosi yang terjadi di masa lampau.

I was happy to see my mom (Saya merasa senang bertemu dengan ibu saya)
She was so sad because her kitten is gone (Dia sedih karena kucingnya hilang)

5. Menjelaskan kejadian yang menjadi kebiasaan pada masa lampau namun sudah tidak lagi dilakukan. Kata kerja yang digunakan adalah used to .

She used to feed stray cats , but not anymore since she died ( Dia terbiasa memberikan makan pada kucing liar, namun tidak lagi sejak ia meninggal)
He used to love me but not anymore ( Dia dulu mencintai saya , namun sekarang tidak lagi)
I used to ride a bycycle to go to shcool, but now my father gives me a ride ( Saya terbiasa menaiki sepeda untuk pergi ke sekolah, tapi sekarang ayah saya memberikan tumpangan [mengantar])

Pembahasan:

Dalam kalimat tanya di simple past tense, pola yang digunakan adalah did+s+v1. Jadi awal kalimat tanya yang tepat adalah “Did you meet”

c. Came; wasn’t

d. Came; isn’t

Ratna… datang ke rumah saya pekan lalu, tetapi saya … di rumah.

Subjek : Ratna

Keterangan waktu yang menunjukkan lampau : last week, sehingga menggunakan verb 2 yaitu came. Konjungsi pertentangan (but) membuat kontras antara tindakan ratna (came) dan keadaan/kondisi dari tokoh “I”, maka to be yang digunakan adalah was+not menjadi i wasn’t at home.

3. The woman … in the room last night

Pembahasan :

To be past tense untuk You/We/They adalah Were, to be past tense untuk I/He/She/It adalah Was. Pada soal, The Woman merupakan subject She, maka to be nya adalah Was. Jadi, jawaban yang benar adalah A.

4. Some pens … by him last Tuesday.

a. Was bought

b. Is bought

d. Were bought

Adverb of time: last tuesday=simple past, subjeknya adalah some pens; They.

To be past tense untuk You/We/They adalah Were, to be past tense untuk I/He/She/It adalah Was. Jadi jawabannya yang tepat adalah D.

5. My father went to London last week. He had something to do there. He … the night in Hilton hotel.

d. Has spent

Went = pergi, yang merupakan bentuk lampau (v2) dari go.

Last week = minggu lalu, merupakan keterangan waktu untuk simple past tense. Maka kata kerja yang dimaksud juga dalam bentuk lampau. V1 : spend -> V2 spent.

Dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, pemahaman tentang Simple Past Tense merupakan hal yang penting untuk fondasi berbahasa. Dengan memahami konsep ini, Si Kecil diharapkan lebih lancar dalam menyusun kalimat tentang peristiwa-peristiwa yang terjadi di masa lampau.

Selain itu, rumus dasar dan kunci jawaban juga akan disertakan untuk memudahkan pembelajaran. Simple past tense merupakan salah satu bentuk waktu dalam Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa atau kejadian yang terjadi di masa lampau.

Seperti halnya bentuk waktu lainnya, simple past tense memiliki pola penulisan yang khas. Secara umum, simple past tense dapat dibentuk dengan cara menggunakan subjek diikuti oleh kata kerja dalam bentuk kedua (verb 2) atau subjek diikuti oleh kata kerja bantu "was" atau "were" dan kata kerja non-verbal.

Kalimat positif: Subject+was atau were+adj atau noun atau adv

Kalimat tanya: Was atau were+subject+adj atau noun atau adv + simbol "?"

Kalimat verbal adalah kalimat yang mempunyai kata kerja.

Kalimat positif: Subject +verb 2 + complement
Kalimat negatif: Subject + did + not + verb 1 + complement
Kalimat tanya: Did + subject + verb 1 + complement + simbol "?"

Kegunaan dari Simple Past Tense dalam bahasa Inggris digunakan untuk menyampaikan informasi tentang tindakan atau kejadian yang sudah terjadi dan tidak sedang terjadi saat ini. Misalnya, untuk menceritakan pengalaman pribadi, peristiwa sejarah, atau urutan kejadian yang sudah berlalu.
