Texas Social Work Continuing Education

Welcome texas social workers.

Free State Social Work is approved as a continuing education provider by the  Association of Social Work Boards Approved Continuing Education Program  (provider #1235) and the  National Board for Certified Counselors  (provider #6605).  We are also approved by the  Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board  (provider 10-001) and the  Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling  (CE Provider # 50-13565).

Does the Texas Board accept courses from ASWB-approved continuing education providers?

Yes.  CE should be directly related to the practice of social work.  The Council does not pre-evaluate or pre-approve CE providers or hours.

Applicable Rule: 22 TAC 781.501

Licensed social workers (e.g., LBSW, LMSW, LCSW) are required to obtain a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education during each renewal period they hold a license.

At least 6 of the hours obtained must be in the area of professional ethics and social work values, with another 3 hours in cultural diversity or competency, and for supervisors, at least 6 of the hours must be in the area of supervision. These hours may be counted toward the total number of hours required.

Effective January 1, 2024, at least half of the 30 hours must be obtained from a provider listed in 781.501(f).

All licensees are required to undergo an HHSC approved human trafficking prevention training course as a condition of renewal, in accordance with Chapter 116 of the Occupations Code. Approved training courses can be found on the Health Care Practitioner Human Trafficking Training webpage.

Please remember that we have done our best to research your state’s licensing guidelines. Licensing regulations can change frequently including guidelines about how many hours you can earn on-line. Most jurisdictions require a certain number of hours in ethics and other areas of practice. The final authority for approving any continuing education activity rests with your state board. Even those states that endorse the ACE program may have exceptions in terms of the courses that they will accept. It is ultimately your responsibility to understand the licensing regulations in your state.

Does Free State Social Work offer Texas Social Work CEUs?  Trainings?  Contact Hours?  Credit Hours?

Different jurisdictions have different definitions.  For some jurisdictions, the term CEU consists of ten credit hours.  At Free State Social Work, we offer continuing education credit hours and we estimate that each credit hour will require one hour of reading.

5) FAQs – Social Work Continuing Education and Renewal Requirements in Texas

Q: What if I’ve taken a course that isn’t pre-approved by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners?

A: If you’ve taken a course that isn’t pre-approved, don’t panic! The Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners allows licensees to submit non-approved courses for consideration.

The Texas State Board will then review the course to determine if it meets the necessary criteria for CEUs. It’s essential to keep all documentation and course materials in case the Board requests them. However, to avoid any hiccups, it’s always a good idea to prioritize pre-approved courses when possible.

ACE-approved courses like those offered by Agents of Change are also accepted by Texas.

Q: I’ve been practicing Social Work outside of Texas. Can my out-of-state CEUs count toward my Texas renewal requirements?

A: Yes, out-of-state CEUs can be considered, but there’s a catch! The course or program you attended must meet the Texas criteria for CEUs. If the program is equivalent to what’s approved in Texas, you can submit it for CEU credit.

However, you’ll need to provide documentation that outlines the course content, duration, and credentials of the instructor or organization offering the course. Remember, the final decision rests with the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, so ensure you have all your ducks in a row when submitting out-of-state CEUs.

Q: I’m juggling a lot right now and might not complete my CEUs in time. Can I get an extension?

A: Life happens, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, we can’t meet deadlines. If you find yourself in a tight spot and can’t complete your CEUs before your license expires, you can request an extension from the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners.

If approved, you’ll be given additional time to complete your CEUs. However, during this extension period, your license status will be “inactive,” which means you cannot practice Social Work in Texas until you’ve met the CEU requirements and your license is renewed.

Need to close a credit gap quickly? Agents of Change Continuing Education offers Unlimited Access to 150+ Online Social Work ACE-approved courses that are valid in Texas.

6) Conclusion

Alright, folks, there you have it! Everything you need to know about Social Work Continuing Education and License Renewal Requirements for Texas.

It might seem like a lot, but hey, you’ve got this! Just keep track of those CEUs, stay ethical, and don’t miss that renewal deadline!

What is Social Work?

Friday, Apr 26, 2024

By Jaelon Jackson School of Social Work

Two people having a conversation with each other

As we celebrate Social Work Month, it is an ideal moment to contemplate the indispensable role social workers play in our communities.

This year, the National Association of Social Workers has chosen Empowering Social Workers as the theme of this month, shedding light on the pivotal contributions of social workers across various facets of our society.

Let us take a deeper dive into the essence of social work, its critical importance for communities, and the escalating demand for professional social workers amidst challenges like the opioid epidemic, mental health issues, counseling services, and the influence of government policy.

Social work stands as a versatile and complex profession dedicated to improving the welfare of individuals, families, and communities. Within this dynamic field, social workers, possessing extensive training, actively engage in addressing social concerns, championing the cause of social justice, and offering crucial support to those facing challenges. At its core, social work plays a key role in instigating positive transformations, empowering individuals, and actively contributing to the development of a society that is both inclusive and equitable.

Navigating the Opioid Crisis:

Social workers are on the front lines in addressing pressing issues such as the opioid epidemic, and mental health issues. The far-reaching consequences of opioid addiction have deeply affected numerous lives, tearing apart families and straining community resources. Social workers take a proactive stance, involving themselves in prevention, intervention, and recovery efforts, providing crucial support to individuals and families grappling with the complexities of addiction.

Addressing Mental Health Challenges:

In the arena of mental well-being, social workers emerge as compassionate companions, dismantling the barriers of stigma surrounding mental health concerns. They extend not only support but a genuine connection, recognizing the diverse hurdles individuals navigate. As the call for mental health services rises, social workers infuse their distinctive expertise and heartfelt understanding to tackle a spectrum of emotional challenges. Their mission is clear: to guarantee that everyone receives the care and empathy required to carve out fulfilling and purposeful lives.

Counseling Services in Social Work:

Within the domain of social work, counseling services stand as a cornerstone, offering individuals a safe haven to delve into their emotions and cultivate coping strategies. Social workers skillfully navigate clients through life's countless challenges, utilizing therapeutic techniques to foster empowerment, resilience, and personal growth.

How Government Policies Shape Social Work:

The policies created by the government significantly influence the field of social work, which is dedicated to assisting individuals and communities. Social workers function as advocates, actively working to ensure that government decisions regarding mental health, addiction services, and social support align with the genuine needs of the people.

As our societal challenges evolve, there is an increasing demand for social workers who possess a deep understanding and compassion for these issues. Whether it is addressing the consequences of the opioid epidemic or supporting individuals dealing with mental health challenges, social workers play a crucial role as catalysts for positive change. Social Work Month serves as a celebratory reminder of how these dedicated professionals, with their empathy and commitment, contribute to creating a fairer and more compassionate world.
