  • The Times Higher Education survey ranks the world’s universities by global reputation.
  • Harvard takes the top spot in 2021 for the 11th consecutive year.
  • US universities dominate the table once more.
  • But China has broken into the top 10 for the first time.
  • Oxford University moved into third place in the year that saw it deliver a COVID-19 vaccine.

Harvard University has topped the poll of the world’s top universities by reputation for the 11th consecutive year.

Almost 11,000 academics across 128 countries have named the universities they think are the best for research and teaching in their field for Times Higher Education’s (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2021 .

The US as a whole remains the most represented country, with 57 institutions named in the rankings, while the UK has the second-highest number, at 25.

There is also no change among the top six, with THE noting that Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge and Berkeley are “a breakaway group of global university super brands”.

China breaks through

One notable newcomer this year is China.

Tsinghua University in Beijing has risen three places this year to number 10, becoming the first Chinese institution to break through into the top 10.

Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer at THE, thinks this is significant. “We could see a shift in the balance of power in global higher education over the coming years as mainland China becomes a more attractive proposition for academics and students to work and study. This could not only cause issues for the likes of the US and UK in terms of attracting talent, but also funding and prestige on the world stage.”

Here are some other highlights from the survey.

The Netherlands – six of its nine listed universities have ranked better than last year, with the remaining three retaining their positions on the table. Delft University of Technology climbs into the top 50 for 2021.

Oxford University – in the same year that it helped develop a COVID-19 vaccine , the University of Oxford climbs two places to third.

China – with its “breakthrough result” this year, “mainland China is the major success story in the ranking,” THE says. With seven universities in the top 100, including Peking University (15th), it also adds five new universities to the rankings this year, giving China a record 17 representatives in the table overall and making it the third most represented country for 2021.

India – four universities make the grade this year, with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi appearing in the rankings for the first time, while the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay climbs two ranking bands to 126-150th and the Indian Institute of Science makes it into the top 100.

South America – Brazil is the region’s only representative in the table, but both of the country’s ranked universities improve their standing this year, with the University of São Paulo moving up nine places to 81st and the University of Campinas jumping from 175th to 151st this year.

The University of Toronto is among an elite group of universities whose teaching and research are highly regarded by the world’s leading scholars, according to new rankings by Times Higher Education .

The magazine’s World Reputation Rankings 2023 , announced Tuesday, ranked U of T first in Canada and 21st globally – unchanged from the previous year – based on a survey that asks experienced, published academics for their opinions on teaching and research excellence.

Among public universities, U of T ranked fourth in North America and 12th overall.

“This latest affirmation of the University of Toronto’s global reputation is based on the independent assessments of scholars around the world who are leaders in their respective fields,” said U of T President Meric Gertler .

“Our international stature reflects our excellence in teaching and research, and is a key factor in attracting outstanding students and faculty to our three campuses.”

The World Reputation Rankings are based on the world’s largest invitation-only survey of scholars, comprising more than 38,000 responses from 166 countries.

Respondents were asked to select up to 15 universities that they consider to be the best in research, as well as universities they deem as being the best for teaching. The final ranking scores were based on the number of times that respondents cited institutions as being among the best in their respective field.

The World Reputation Rankings are among several highly regarded Times Higher Education rankings that have consistently placed U of T among the world’s top institutions of higher learning. Others include: the World University Rankings by Subject , in which U of T was among just six universities to rank in the top 30 globally across all 11 subjects in the ranking; the Global Employability University Rankings , which ranked U of T 12th in the world; and the main World University Rankings , which ranked U of T 21st globally in the most recent edition.

Other Canadian universities that ranked in the top 50 of THE’s World Reputation Rankings 2023 were the University of British Columbia (36th) and McGill University (47th).

Overall, U of T is ranked first in Canada and among the top 25 universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report ’s Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education ’s World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

McGill moves up the Times Higher Education Reputation rankings

times higher education reputation rankings

McGill has moved up three spots to 47th in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 World Reputation Rankings released on February 13. This ranking is based on the results of the academic reputation survey that was carried out by THE and distributed between October 2022 and January 2023.

For the 12th straight year – every year since the rankings debuted in 2011 – McGill has made the global top 50. The University is one of three Canadian institutions to rank in the top 100 in this edition of the list, along with the University of Toronto (21st) and the University of British Columbia (26th). McGill is the 12th ranked public university in North America, and eighth among its 71 peer institutions of the Association of American Universities.

“Reputation really matters – it is the global currency of higher education, helping universities attract and retain talent, bring in research collaborators and court inward investment, said Phil Baty, chief global affairs officer for THE. “It also gives students and alumni the prestige they need in a global jobs market.”

Record number of participating academics

The reputation rankings differ from the THE’s World University Rankings, which evaluate institutions based on a variety of factors, including research, teaching, and international outlook.

Instead, the reputation rankings invite leading academics from around the world to select their top institutions. This year, a record 38,796 academics from 166 countries/regions were asked to name the universities they believe are the best in research and teaching in their field. Over 520,000 votes were cast to provide the clearest picture of universities with the best reputation for research and teaching.

I guess this is the last hurrah for McGill, before the tuition fees, French language requirements, and declining enrollment and reputation set in and start impacting the rankings next Fall and next year.

Asia University Rankings 2024

Excellence in South-East Asian universities’ research sees them rise in Times Higher Education’s Asia University Rankings 2024

  • South-East Asian countries, in particular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand excel in 12th edition of Asia University Rankings
  • Two Indonesia universities jump up a band
  • Turkey has 75 universities ranked up from 61 last year
  • Mainland China takes five of top 10 positions including first and second
  • 739 universities are ranked – 70 more than last year, from 31 countries/regions

Tsinghua University in China tops Times Higher Education’s (THE) Asia University Rankings 2024   retaining its number one spot for the sixth year in a row. In second place is Chinese institution, Peking University, which is second for the fifth year in a row. Taking third place is National University of Singapore, which has also maintained its position for the fifth consecutive year. China’s representation in the top 10 has increased to five, up from four last year.

That comes at the expense of Hong Kong universities, which now has two institutions in the top 10, compared with three last year.

Japan’s position is stronger than had been previously appreciated with all universities showing significantly higher scores in this year’s research quality pillar due to the addition of the new research influence metric. Institutions such as the University of Tokyo moved from 8th last year to 5th and Kyoto University from 18th last year to 13th.

Singapore has two universities in the ranking: National University of Singapore, which is third and Nanyang Technological University, which moved up one place from 5th to 4th this year.

Top 10 universities in THE’s Asia University Rankings 2024

Seventeen of Thailand’s 19 universities either moved up or maintained their position in this year’s ranking. The country’s top three, and stand out, institutions are: Chulalongkorn University, which is ranked 117 up from 201–250 last year, Mahidol University ranked 139 up from 201–250 last year and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi ranked 192 up from 201–250 last year.

While most of Indonesia’s 24 universities maintained their position in the ranking there are two notable exceptions: University of Indonesia jumped up from 251–300 last year to 201–250 this year and Universitas Gadjah Mada shot up from 401–500 last year to 351–400 this year.

Some countries have seen a decline in their overall ranking performance, despite improving in the new metrics, reflecting the fierce competition in the continent.

Seventy more universities are ranked this year than last, up from 669 to 739 this year, marking a 10.5% increase, from 31 countries/regions, while a further 388 are listed as having reporter status*. Many of the newly ranked institutions are in west or south Asia, which is something to look out for in the future.

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education’s chief global affairs officer, said: “We have tracked the impressive rise of China in the global rankings for two decades now, but what we can clearly see now is that the rising tide in Asia is lifting all boats.

“While China’s leading universities now compete at the very top of the world rankings, our data shows a strengthening across Asia, where a healthy competition, more collaboration, more investment in research and university capacity and more internationalisation is driving up performance. It all amounts to hugely positive tectonic shifts in higher education from the West to the East, with real excellence demonstrated in East Asia and South East Asia in particular and well beyond.

“Another significant highlight is the growth of other regional powerhouses including India, Japan and increasingly Thailand, all of which show a continuous improvement in Asian countries’ higher education systems, which must be seen against the backdrop of an increasingly highly competitive higher education environment in the region.”

This is the 12th edition of THE’s the Asia University Rankings with Japan having the most universities in the rankings with 119. This is followed by India with 91, up from 75 last year, with the country’s highest-ranked institution being the Indian Institute of Science at 32nd place, up from 48th. Mainland China has 86 universities. Turkey has 75 universities, up from 61 last year. The top two – Koç University and Middle East Technical University – share 69th place, and Istanbul Technical University rises from joint 149th to 92nd. Iran is the fifth most represented country with 73 universities.

The methodology behind the Asia University Rankings is based on the same framework as the World University Rankings but the weightings are specially recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions. See the Asia University Rankings 2024 methodology . THE revised and improved its methodology for its World University Rankings 2024 adding new metrics relating to research quality and patents. The methodological change has highlighted performances from universities in research that were not previously completely visible.

The addition of the new patent metric (part of the industry pillar) allows the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry to be measured. Nineteen Asian universities score 100 in this metric and of those four institutions each come from: Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.

*Reporter status means, although they submitted data, they did not meet THE’s eligibility criteria to receive a ranked position.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

If you want diamonds, head down to London’s Hatton Garden. For musical instruments, you need to go a mile or so further west to Denmark Street. And if you want to invest in a mining company, the London Stock Exchange has historically been one of world’s top destinations.

For years, the market built its reputation as the home of an array of global natural resources companies. The likes of Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Fresnillo and Antofagasta have been among the mainstays of the mining offering, while BP and Shell have led the way for the oil & gas sector.

BHP’s potential bid for fellow miner Anglo American threatens to put a dent in that hard built reputation. If successful, it would deprive London investors of a £34bn company that has been listed in the city for a quarter of a century.

That reputation has already suffered some blows. In 2018, the City lost its biggest gold mining company when Randgold Resources was bought by Canada’s Barrick Gold for $6bn. And BHP itself has already taken a chunk out of London’s status. In 2022 it changed its structure from a dual listing in London and Sydney to a primary listing in Australia . At the time, it said that the move would make the company “more efficient and agile” and would better position it for “continued performance and growth”.

Regardless of whether BHP succeeds in its quest to buy Anglo, there could be more damage on the way. Last month, hedge fund Tribeca Investment Partners suggested that Switzerland-based Glencore — which has been listed in London since 2011 — should move its listing to Australia , arguing in a letter to the company that “London is no longer the home of mining”.

Over in oil & gas, it emerged last year that in 2021 Shell had considered moving its listing to the US , while there have been mutters this year about a possible bid for BP, which would remove it from the London Stock Exchange.

Valuations play a part, as they have for the numerous other UK-listed companies that have decided recently that they would rather have their shares traded elsewhere. In a note earlier this month, analysts at investment bank Liberum found that mining companies in the UK trade at much steeper discounts to their US peers than companies in other sectors. Their higher exposure to the slowing Chinese economy is one of the reasons, according to Liberum analyst Joachim Klement.

Perhaps London investors have tired of a sector that has not always made itself the easiest to back. Mining has had more than its fair share of troubled companies. Kazakh miner ENRC, which delisted in 2013 after a range of governance problems , has cast a long shadow. More recently, Endeavour Mining fired its chief executive at the start of this year over an alleged irregular payment instruction. And there have been plenty more.

London still has a lot going for it as a centre of natural resources investment. There is a deep pool of experts in the city who know how the industry works, from investors and analysts to lawyers and economists. And while Shell might have considered a move to the US, it decided instead to cement its presence in London by ditching its dual Amsterdam/London listing and switching to a primary listing in the UK capital. For now at least .

But there is no denying that the City’s position is increasingly under threat as Sydney, Toronto and New York vie to attract companies. The disappearance of Anglo would only add to the impression that perhaps London’s best days as a natural resources centre are behind it. In that sense, it would be more damaging than the failure to attract the IPO of chip designer Arm last year, or the £4.3bn take-private of cyber security firm Darktrace by Thoma Bravo announced last week.

Reputational changes don’t always happen overnight. Often it’s just little by little until there’s not much left. Just around the corner from Denmark Street and its musical instruments is Charing Cross Road, once the home of London’s second-hand book trade. These days, you are more likely to find coffee shops and restaurants. The second-hand book shops have almost died out entirely.
