Nigeria: 15-Year-Old Student Wins UBA Essay Competition, Receives N5 Million Scholarship

While the overall winner received a prize of N5 million in scholarship, the first and second runners-up received N3 million and N2.5 million grants, respectively, among other gifts.

A 15-year-old student of Fountain Heights Secondary School , Surulere, Lagos, Adaeze Onaro, has emerged the overall winner of the 2023 National Essay Competition (NEC) sponsored by the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Miss Adaeze was unveilled on Tuesday at the financial institution's headquarters in Lagos where 11 other students from various parts of the country also won various prizes and received accolades.

The overall winner received in educational grant a total of N5 million to study the course of her choice in any tertiary institution in Africa. She was also presented with a laptop, a plaque and a trophy.

The first runner-up in the competition, Khadijah Abdulhameed of Sweet Haven High School , Kano, Kano State, received in educational grant a total of N3 million to study in tertiary institution on the continent, while Naomi Chukwuma-Okoh of Queens College, Yaba , Lagos, who came third, received N2.5 million in educational grant.

The two runners-up also received laptops, award plaques and branded bags filled with educational materials such as books, writing tools, among others.

12,000 entries

The representative of the panel of judges, Asabe Kabir, a professor of African Literature at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), said since its launch 13 years ago, the 2023 edition received the highest number of entries of almost 12,000.

The renowned scholar also commended the spread of the entries, saying candidates from various parts of the country sent in their entries, and that the judges were impressed that a large percentage of participants complied with the set instructions.

She said the candidates wrote on the topic: "Will Artificial Intelligence(AI) Take Over Human Intelligence? What Should Students Do to Ensure AI Doesn't Override But Enhance Their Ability to Learn through Research?"

However, the shortlisted 12 finalists, comprising three males and seven females, assembled in Lagos on Sunday, 19 November, to write on a new topic: "Ethnic Diversity and National Unity: Implications for Our Political Problems and Possible Solutions".

According to the professor, the scripts were "thoroughly evaluated resulting in coming up with the shortlist of 12 best essays," adding that the judges were guided by the "approved guidelines for the distribution of marks for composition in line with the benchmark set by NECO and WAEC."

She said "content" carried 40 marks, while "expression" carried 30 marks, noting that "organisation" and "mechanical accuracy" carried 15 marks each, making up a total of 100 marks.

She said: "Under the content, the focus is usually on the subject matter, with special emphasis placed on the relevance of the idea of the topic, appropriateness of the language and its relevance to the central theme and its development. Above all, originality in the candidate's approach and ability to addressing the topic carries weight. Any alteration from the topic is unacceptable.

"Expression which carries 30 marks focuses on the candidate's ability to express himself or herself which includes choice of vocabularies and their relevance to the topic, sentence structure, judicious and imaginative use of figurative language, candidate's control over the vocabularies, and descriptive words to create vivid pictures.

"Under organisation, the candidate's organisation of points which include the correct use of former features such as good paragraphing, suitable opening, adequate development of paragraphs, proper links between paragraphs, balance, unity, coherence, suitable conclusion as well as appropriate use of emphasis, and arrangement of ideas are the basis for scoring."

She said the mechanical accuracy guideline concerned "mainly the candidate's ability to use the mechanics of English Language, especially as they relate with the correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling."

Observation

Speaking on the observations by the judges, Mrs Kabir said many of the candidates were found guilty of plagiarism.

She said such students used "untidy sources" to generate their answers, including websites and applications such as "Ask AI," "Tutor.com," "Readout Loud," "Study Gig," "Study Bay," "Assignment Maker," among many others.

"We detected all these plagiarisms when we noticed similar sentence patterns in the writing structures, recycling of information without changing the language gotten from the internet, copy and paste process of research. In fact, about 70 per cent of the evaluated essays were outright plagiarisms which we detected through checkers like 'Turn it in' 'Copy Leaks', and many others," the professor said.

She, however, commended many of the candidates for their beautiful entries, saying she was surprised to know that there were students of Senior School 1 classes among the 12 finalists.

Ecstatic mother

The mother of the the overall winner of the competition, Veronica Onaro, a fashion entrepreneur, who was visibly overjoyed, said she had known all along that her daughter would lift the trophy.

She said: "Adaeze has always been very exceptional in whatever she does. When she got to SS1 she started developing special interest in essay writing. Anytime there is an opportunity, you would see her preparing to participate and I have always encouraged her. Even if I didn't want to, whenever she needed my phone, I would always want to know what she wanted to use it for."

She noted that even if she claimed she didn't have time to check her write-ups, her daughter would still read it to her, "and I would definitely show interest and correct appropriately."

Mrs Onaro said her daughter is willing to study Economics for her degree, saying her interest is to contribute to economic development of Nigeria through promotion of sound policies.

Alawuba, Atta speak

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, applauded the finalists for their excellence, saying the bank is committed to grooming future leaders for Africa through the competition and other initiatives.

Mr Alawuba said the financial institution's commitment to reclaiming Africa's lost glory is undoubted, adding that through quality education the continent will rise.

He said: "The focus of the national essay competition is the African youth. The objective is to improve the critical thinking ability and reading skills of African youth and position them for leadership on the continent."

For her part, the Chief Executive Officer of UBA Foundation, the bank's corporate social responsibility arm in charge of the competition, Bola Atta, said the initiative has been recording improvement every year since its launch 13 years ago.

"The quality of entries that we received this year was amazing. And the quality of the winners is even more amazing. They are just excellent, fast-paced with ability and talent," Mrs Atta said.

Three students win Uganda Martyrs essay writing competition

_________________

Doreen Nayebare from Mary Hill High School, Simon Batesaki Ssentamu from Sacred Heart Seminary Mubende and Jacinta Nyakato from Immaculate Girls SSS Nyakibale have won the Uganda martyrs essay writing competition that was organized by Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Nkozi.

The three will be honored at the National Martyrs Day celebrations in Namugongo on June 3, 2024.

Prof. Patrick Kyamanywa, vice chancellor of UMU says the winners stood out of the many when they showcased talent, confidence, courage and appreciation of the Uganda martyrs.

Meanwhile, the essay writing competition started last year (2023) and it attracts students from various secondary schools spread across 19 dioceses in Uganda and each diocese selects five schools to participate.

This year, the competition kicked off in April under the theme; The Relationship between the Uganda Martyrs, Culture, Spirituality, and Development. Sixty-seven students submitted their essays showcasing their knowledge and understanding of the correlation between culture and spirituality in the modern world.

Of the 67 entries, 33 were shortlisted and these included 22 girls and 11 boys who appeared before a panel of a 10-member review committee to defend their essays.

At the end of it all, three winners; Nayebare, Ssentamu and Nyakato were announced as winners of 2024. ; ;

Fr. Peter Celestine Safari, chairperson of the organizing committee says there was an increase in entries compared to 2023 when the competition was launched in Jinja Diocese. They received 23 essays from six schools and of these 12 advanced to the final round of assessment at UMU in Nkozi, Mpigi district. Isaac Mondecee and Ceasar Masinde both from Jinja College plus Joshua Balondemu from St. Gonzaga SSS, Budini emerged winners.

“When we receive those essays, we evaluate them rigorously and come up with a shortlist from which we select the winners,” Fr. Safari says. The competition is exclusive to high school students from diverse backgrounds and dioceses.

The essay writing competition aims to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the Uganda Martyrs' legacy, especially among the younger generation, according to Prof. Kyamanywa.

He says, the martyrs were committed to telling the truth, a virtue that has been eroded in our society today. This in turn explains the rampant corruption, sex immorality, robberies and other crimes.

“It is time for us to reflect on our values and emulate the martyrs who willingly died for the truth,” he says.

Kyamanywa implored the students to be ambassadors and change agents in their communities.

Elsewhere, as the competition continues to grow, Proscovia Nabatte head of public relations and marketing at UMU envisions greater participation and impact throughout the country.

The university plans to compile all approved essays in order to amplify the voices of young writers all while celebrating the martyrs.

History of Pskov Oblast

The territory of the Pskov region was originally inhabited by Balt and Finno-Ugric tribes. The first Slavs - Pskov Krivichi - appeared here in the 6th century. It was one of the first areas in Russia populated by the Slavs. The first mention of Pskov dates back to 903 (“The Tale of Bygone Years”, Laurentian Chronicle), Izborsk - 862 (“The Tale of Bygone Years”).

In the 10th - the beginning of the 12th centuries, the Pskov region was part of the Old Russian state. Until the 12th century, Pskov recognized the primacy of the prince of Kiev. The rise of Novgorod, the second center of the country that represented the policy of Kiev in the North West, led to the inclusion of Pskov in the Novgorod land.

This territory was not conquered by the Mongols, which helped to preserve a large number of monuments of the 13th-15th centuries. In 1348, Pskov became the capital of an independent Pskov Veche Republic. In 1510, Pskov Republic was abolished and its territory was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The symbol of the independence of Pskov - veche bell - was taken to Moscow.

More historical facts…

Pskov became the western outpost on the way to Moscow. At the beginning of the 17th century, during the Time of Troubles (and after), part of the territory of the Russian state including the Pskov region, was occupied by Sweden and Poland.

Since the beginning of the Great Northern War in 1700, Pskov became once again one of the centers of military events. At the end of the war (Treaty of Nystad, 1721), Russia received the territory of the former Livonia and Pskov lost its importance as a defensive and trade center. These functions were transferred to the new capital Russia - St. Petersburg - and the Baltic ports (Revel, Riga).

In 1772, by the decree of Catherine II, Pskov guberniya (province) was created. In the 18th-19th centuries, Pskov province developed as an agrarian region, with a small number of urban population. According to the National Population Census of 1897, there were 1,122,317 inhabitants in the province, 93% of whom lived in villages.

On March 2, 1917, in Pskov, the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II was forced to sign the abdication. During the Second World War, most of the Pskov region was occupied by the Germans (1941-1944). On August 23, 1944, Pskov Oblast was established.

After the collapse of the USSR, in the 1990s, Pskov Oblast again became a border region, which gave it a transit and customs-border status.

  • 57.816667 28.333333 1 Pskov — the ancient capital is not well prepared for tourism, but is rich in sites; its Krom (medieval citadel) is very impressive, it is circled by monasteries—including one which is Russia's oldest, and the city is full of small, old churches

  • 57.016667 28.916667 1 Pushkinskie Gory (Pushkin Hills) - a former Pushkin's mansion and its surroundings converted into a large open-air museum with breathtaking scenery and traditional Russian ethnic elements. An excellent weekend destination.

Understand [ edit ]

Despite the proximity of the border with Latvia , Estonia and Belarus , in socio-economic terms, the Pskov Oblast is the most underdeveloped among all the Oblasts of Russia (only among the Oblasts), and the most backward region of Central Russia. There is practically no industry here, and agriculture is poorly developed.

An ancient region of Russia which once constituted its own republic, Pskov Oblast is a great weekend trip or longer from Saint Petersburg . Tourist infrastructure is at best rudimentary, although one would expect this will change in the near future, but the region has lots to see for an adventurous traveler or a traveler with a good guide. Pskov, the capital, is without a doubt the principal attraction and likely the only stop for most travelers, but it might be a good plan to get out of the city and check out nearby Izborsk.

Two daily buses depart for Pskov from Novgorod at 08:30 and 16:00.

Trains from Saint Petersburg are unfortunately very inconvenient—they leave around 03:00 and arrive in Pskov four hours later. A better option is to hop on a bus from Petersburg's Vitebsky Vokzal; there are 15 buses bound for Pskov daily and they take about 5 hours to get there.

There is a daily overnight train from Moscow which leaves around 20:00 and arrives in Pskov around 08:00.
