Answers for My University Listening Practice

Below are answers with tips for the practice listening lesson about My University. If you have not done this lesson, please click here: My University Listening, before looking at the answers.

  • Some of you have difficult hearing the difference between 19 and 90. Try this lesson to improve your listening with these types of numbers: Numbers listening video
  • The listening recording says “Thomas Holloway founded the college in 1879.” The question was “The college was established in…” The word “established” is a synonym for “founded”.
  • The preposition “in” in the question means you should listen for a date or a place. As you listen for the synonym keyword, you find it is a date.
  • You do not need to use a comma in the number, but it helps the person marking if you do.
  • The recording actually says “Today, Royal Holloway is a thriving co-educational community of some 8,000 students…”. The word “some” means “about”. You do not need to write it in your answer.
  • The question is clearly asking for you to write an adjective “… feels like a peaceful, …… place …”.
  • The audio says “…. like the campus is enjoying a peaceful, secluded existence right in the heart of the British countryside.”
  • It is always best to write your answers using capital letters.
  • The spelling must be correct or the answer will be marked wrong.
  • The question asks for a distance “is located … from X”.
  • The audio says “it is only 19 miles from the centre of London”.
  • Always check if the question gives the word “miles”. If the word is given in the question, you do not repeat it in the answer.
  • In this case, if you wrote only 19 without the word “miles”, your answer would be marked wrong.
  • If you wrote “and” in your answer, it would be marked wrong. The word “and” was written in the question and you do not need to repeat it. This only applies when you are completing sentences as a task because the sentence must be grammatically correct once you have completed it.
  • You must have “s” with the word “sciences”. If you didn’t write the “s”,  your answer would be marked wrong.
  • You do not need to write a comma between the words. If you want to write a comma, you can. But it isn’t necessary. Punctuation is not needed in your answers for listening.
  • Many people struggled with this question because they understand “social sciences”. Examples of social sciences are: anthropology, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Linguistics, Law etc. Take a look online if you are unsure. This term usually applies to university subjects rather than school subjects.

I hope you enjoyed this listening lesson. I now recommend you go back to the original listening lesson and listen again to the video.

Did you like my university? I, personally, think it is a beautiful building. I actually lived for one year in the main castle building 🙂

Hi liz, your website is quite helpful for understanding ielts rules and preparing for it.i listened to your video and found difficulty while listening to the words” secluded and history” ,though these words are not new or unfamiliar to me.I am confused now, how could i prepare for that much wide range of accents ?

It is just a case of practice and practice. You need to familiarise yourself with accents dy watching documentaries, news (Uk, Aussie) etc.

Sure,i will do that. Thanks for your guidance 🙂

Your lessons are an absolute handbook for IELTS students. I would like to clarify that in listening, could the answer for an email address written in capital letters, even the audio says all in lower case? I used to write in upper case for writing answers.

Thank you in advance.

If the audio says lower case, you must pay attention and do exact what it tells you.

The complete guide to the IELTS Listening Module

IELTS listening

The listening module in IELTS is divided into 4 parts with 10 questions each ( 40 questions in total). The first part is the easiest, and the fourth is the hardest. You will hear the recordings only once. The test will take around  30 minutes , and then you will have 10 more minutes in paper-based IELTS  to review your answers and write them down on your separate answer sheet . However, in computer-based test, you will only have 2 minutes at the end to review your answers. You input answers directly as you hear them.

It is therefore very important that you practice a lot using appropriate techniques before you take the exam. In this guide, you will learn how to approach each question type to maximize your score.

Information about the test format and scoring

  • two speakers
  • usually about personal information in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel room)
  • one speaker
  • a monologue about a general topic (e.g., a tour guide giving information about a building)
  • two to four speakers
  • a discussion in an academic context (e.g., students talking about an assignment)
  • a monologue in an academic context (e.g., a university lecture)

Question: How is this module scored?

Answer: You only get points for your correct answers , and t here is no penalty for incorrect ones. Therefore, you should answer all the questions and make a guess whenever you miss one. The table below can help you estimate your score:

university assignment details ielts listening answers

More basic information about the exam

  • You will have about 20 seconds to read the questions before each part starts. Use this time to underline or highlight keywords. Usually, the speakers use synonyms or paraphrases of the keywords. You can use them to identify the answers.
  • You will hear only native speaker accents. These may include British, American, Australian, and New Zealand accents.
  • You will have half a minute to check your answers after each part is over. If you are sure about your answers, use this time to underline or highlight the keywords for the next part.
  • Spelling is very important. The answers that are not spelled correctly will be marked wrong.
  • If you hear the answer in plural form , you must write it in plural form.
  • You should only write what you hear without changing it .
  • Any information (names of people or places) that you are not expected to know will be spelled out. However, common names like John, Susan, Emily, Park Hotel, etc. won’t be spelled out.
  • The questions follow the flow of the audio , so you will not hear the answer for question number 20 before the one for 19.
  • IELTS listening exam is all about synonyms and paraphrases . It means that you won’t hear the exact words you see in the questions.

Question: The house was repaired and then modified to be used as a ………………

Speaker: The local authorities renovated the building as a museum.

  • There is a word limit for each answer. If you go above the limit, your answer will be marked wrong. Take, for example, the following:
  • one word and one number
  • two words and one number
  • 10 students = 1 number + 1 word
  • 10% = 1 number
  • $10 = 1 number
  • 10 percent = 1 number + 1 word
  • 10 dollars = 1 number + 1 word
  • ten dollars = 2 words
  • 10AM: 1 number
  • 10:30 = 1 number
  • 10th November = 1 number + 1 word
  • Hyphenated compounds also count as one word : mother-in-law = 1 word
  • contractions count as one word: He’s = 1 word

Tips to help you write your answers with confidence

  • Dates should be written appropriately. It means that you should choose either American or British style depending on your writing style. Here is how you do so:

Speaker: Today is the 15th of January .

If you write in the American style, follow this format:

January 15th or January 15

If you write in the British style, follow this format:

15th January or 15 January

Note: In summary, dates in American and British styles are written as explained below:

American style: Month/Day/Year

01/15/2021 = January 15, 2021 = Friday, January 15, 2021

British style: Day/Month/Year

15/01/2021 = 15 January 2021 = Friday, 15 January 2021

  • fifteen pounds ninety-nine
  • fifteen pounds and ninety-nine pence
  • fifteen ninety-nine

Note: Try not to write numbers as words in the listening section because it wastes your valuable time, and there is always a chance of making spelling mistakes.

  • When talking about phone numbers , speakers express the digits one by one. However, you should be wary of expressions like double three (33), triple five (555), etc. Also, the number 0 can be expressed in three ways: zero , naught , and oh .
  • Pay close attention to transitional words or phrases like however, although, that said , etc. They indicate a shift, which will most probably lead to the answer.
  • Be wary of traps or distractors . Here are common traps in IELTS listening:
  • Answers that change:

Example: The meeting is at 6. Oh, no, it’s at 6:30 .

  • words that look like the answer but they don’t fit the gap

Example: Jenny lives on…………..

Agent: Where do you live?

Jenny: I live in Chicago.

Agent: Do you live in a house or an apartment?

Jenny: I live on the fifth floor of a 7-story building.

Explanation: The answer is the fifth floor, not Chicago. Pay attention to the prepositions. You can’t say on Chicago . Your answer should fit the gap grammatically as well.

  • Using similar words rather than paraphrases

Example: The reconstruction of the building finished in the year………..

Speaker: When this building was being constructed in 1973, the people were going through  difficult time. The government ignored them and allocated a lot of funds to this building. As a result, there was an uprising, which led to the destruction of the new building. In 2010 , however, when things were fine, funds were allocated once again to reconstruct the building and bring it to its former glory. The renovation was completed in 2014.

Explanation: The answer is 2014. We don’t need the construction year (1973), nor do we need the year in which the reconstruction began. We need the year in which it finished.

IELTS listening question types

Form completion.

This type of question is a box or an official form asking for factual information like name, date of birth, phone number, age, etc. For example, a hotel receptionist is asking the customer for his or her personal information to book a room for them. The information that is already written will help you locate where the speaker is and identify the answer.

Multiple choice

university assignment details ielts listening answers

In this type of question, there is a question or an incomplete sentence with options to choose from. Sometimes the question asks you to choose more than one option, so read the question carefully before you start listening. Before you listen, read the questions first and underline/highlight the most important words or phrases that can help you locate the answers. As you listen, cross out the distractors/incorrect answers; you will finally be left with the correct one(s).

In questions like the ones below, the flow of the listening is in order of the numbers (the questions) , not the letters in the box. Highlight the keywords in the numbers. When they start talking about the items, shift your focus to the box, choose the related option, and then move on to the next.

university assignment details ielts listening answers

Plan, map, or diagram labeling

university assignment details ielts listening answers

For this type of question, follow the steps below:

  • Check if it is a fill-in-the-blank task with only numbered blanks on the map or matching numbers with the letters in the box.
  • Study the map quickly and familiarize yourself with the names and shapes of different parts.
  • Follow the speaker like you are walking in the area and look for names to fill in the blanks. Remember to keep an eye on the box of options too.
  • If there are locations without names, and they are not part of the question, write their names quickly because they might come in handy later.
  • When the speaker pauses for a while, it means that he or she is about to move on to the next thing.

Note completion

university assignment details ielts listening answers

The notes are going to be organized in some format. Usually, it is a box or a bulleted list with blanks inside. Highlight keywords before you start listening, and remember not to write more words than the limit.

Table completion

university assignment details ielts listening answers

This type of question is like note completion. Focus on the column headings to know which part the speaker is talking about. Most of the time, the flow of the speech is from the first column on the left to the last column.

flowchart completion

university assignment details ielts listening answers

The flowcharts usually include a series of boxes or circles connected by lines or arrows with blanks inside. The flow of the speech is the same as that of the flowchart. However, you should remember that sometimes the answers that are together on the chart (like questions number 21 and 22 in the one below) may not come together in the audio. The speaker may mention one of them in a sentence and the other in the next.

Summary completion

university assignment details ielts listening answers

Summary completion might look the hardest for some test takers. This kind of question requires fast highlighting of keywords. The speakers are going to use synonyms or paraphrases of the keywords. For example, in the picture below, if you want to identify the answer for question number 31, you’ll need to look for paraphrases of “stick to.” The speaker might say, ” For a healthy life, you need to follow a dietary regime.

Sentence completion

university assignment details ielts listening answers

In these questions, you need to find the word(s) that fit in the blanks. Remember that you can’t make any changes to the words you hear to make it fit. For example, if you need the -ing form of the verb, but the speaker uses the past tense, you should look for another word. What you hear should be written exactly as it is said.

Short-answer questions

university assignment details ielts listening answers

In these questions, there might be one or more gaps for a question. Each gap requires a different answer. Highlight keywords before you start listening to help you identify the answers. Only write the answers because there will be a word limit.

A Complete Guide to the IELTS Listening Exam

Listening is one of the four parts of the IELTS exam and it is the same regardless of whether you choose to take the academic or general test. It is comprised of four sections and you will be asked a variety of questions on these listening passages. You can expect to hear different accents and different types of materials, from phone conversations to lectures. There are forty questions and you have forty minutes to listen and answer. In this article, I will give a complete guide to the IELTS listening exam. You can find useful hints and tips for IELTS listening elsewhere on this site.

An Overview

The IELTS listening exam is the same for both the general and academic IELTS tests. It requires no specialist knowledge in order to pass, and is a good test of your overall English ability. Sections one and two are in a social context but the third and fourth sections are usually located in an educational facility, and have an academic context. I shall explain more about this, in detail, later.

The purpose of the IELTS listening exam is to test your ability to do the following:

  • understand main ideas
  • follow logical arguments
  • find specific information (ie numbers, addresses)
  • recognize opinions or attitudes

Importantly, you will only have one chance to hear the recording and choose a correct answer.

You will listen to approximately thirty minutes of recordings, including time for reading the questions. The instructions are clear, and you will be told “you now have x minutes” to check your answers or read the next set of questions. At the end of this time, you have ten minutes to transfer your answers from the question paper to the answer paper, which looks like this:

IELTS Listening Answer Sheet

You will be given some time to read the questions prior to actually listening to the recording. You should note your answers on the question paper, and then transfer them during the final ten minutes to the answer sheet. Copy the answers carefully, paying attention to spelling. Make sure that you enter the right answer for the right question number.

Hint: Use your time wisely. When you are given time before a new section starts, don’t check answers from the previous section. Instead, read ahead and predict the sort of material you will hear next. For example, if there is a $ before the blank space, you will be listening for a number. Think about themes and content, as well as the specific answers you should listen for. You can use the time at the end to check spelling and review your answers.

There are four sections to the exam, and each is little more difficult than the one before it. This means that the first section is the easiest and the last is the most difficult. In this regard, it is the same as the speaking exam . There are ten questions in each section, making forty questions in total.

The first thing that you will hear is a set of instructions and an example answer, which is also marked on your question paper. After that, you will soon begin section one.

In this section, you will hear a conversation between two people. The situation will be a normal, everyday social setting. For example, a phone call to a travel agency or realtor. You are typically expected to listen for specific details like the person’s name, address, and phone number. It may look like this:

IELTS listening section 1

The British Council (who run the IELTS exam along with Cambridge University) offer free practice tests like this one . You can practice your listening skills here, or buy the official exam papers .

Next is a monologue, which means just one person speaks. This is again a social setting and typical examples include someone giving details about services, arrangements, or facilities. It will be something of general interest. You can expect different types of questions, and one very common question type in section 2 is filling in a table with the correct information.

Now we begin the academic half of the listening exam. In section 3, you will hear a conversation between two or more people talking about something related to education – maybe a college assignment or a post-lecture discussion. There can be up to four people talking, and you will most likely have to track their attitudes and opinions. You should also be aware that you may need to record factual information as well.

Here is an example question:

The final section is the most difficult one, and is a monologue set in an academic context. It will be related to section 3 and may consist of a lecturer or other speaker giving an informative talk on a set topic. You will not need to know anything about the topic in advance in order to get the questions right. You will, however, need to gather factual information and identify attitudes and opinions .

Here is a practice test that only looks at section 4 of the IELTS listening exam:

Video Overview

I made this video to help you better understand the IELTS listening exam as a whole. It should be very helpful for students who haven’t yet taken the IELTS, and just want to get a basic understanding.

Question Types

You will have noticed from reading the above guide that the IELTS listening exam, although difficult, is actually quite predictable. It is easy to prepare for it because it doesn’t change much. Thankfully, there are only a limited number of question types, too. Some of these are similar to the questions you are asked in the reading exam, while others are specific to the IELTS listening. I will look at some of the more common ones.

Multiple Choice

This is a very common question type, so you really should practice it often. In this type of question, you will be given several possible answers. You may be given a simple question or else the first part of a sentence. It is also possible that you may have to choose more than one answer, so read the instructions very carefully.

Here’s an example question:

What is John going to do before the course starts? A.  attend a class B. write a report C. read a book

Hint: If you don’t know what the answer is, think about what is not correct. If are certain that C is incorrect, then you can guess at either A and B. Never leave a question unanswered.

Label a Map, Diagram, etc

One of the more challenging questions in the listening exam is labeling a map, diagram, or plan. In this case, you need to listen very carefully and follow the verbal description well enough to associate it with the visual representation. This requires the ability to follow instructions and directions, or determine spatial relationships.

It should look something like this:

Form, Table, Summary Completion

There are many variations on this, but quite simply you will be given some sort of incomplete information and asked to complete it according to the information in the listening passage. Perhaps it will be a note or form that needs to be filled with names or numbers. In other cases it is a more complex flow chart that needs you to listen for stages in a procedure.

The most important thing with this type of question is to read the instructions carefully. It will say something like:

WRITE NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER

You must make sure to stick to this as any answer with too many words will be marked as incorrect.

Short Answers

This is something many students find to be difficult as you are asked a question and required to listen to find the words in the recording. You will again be told the maximum number of words you can use, so make sure not to exceed that limit.

Because of the nature of the question, the answer will not be too complex. Instead, expect questions like “Who…?” and “What time…?” that require only one or two words as an answer.

Each question is worth one mark, so you will be given a mark out of forty for your IELTS listening test. This is converted to a band score of between 0-9.

university assignment details ielts listening answers

You can calculate your band score from the number of answers you get correct. Do plenty of listening practice under exam conditions and you will get a good idea of what your band score will be after doing the real IELTS exam.

Other Important Things to Know

You may hear speakers from the U.K. or U.S.A., as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or South Africa. Some students practice listening exclusively to American TV or BBC News and so they are confused by the other accents. However, English is an international language and you should be familiar with these accents at the very least. The speakers will speak clearly and in standard English, so there is no new slang or technical jargon to encounter.

The IELTS exam is, to some extent, also a test of your thinking skills. Sometimes there are answered designed to trick you. It is not always straightforward. You may have to think carefully about a question and the answer may appear to be one of two possible answers, but only a very careful analysis of the language would reveal the correct one. In these cases, it is best to take a guess and move quickly on. You don’t have time to dwell on the difficult ones. Make sure you get the easy stuff right first.

The gist of it is this: practice is absolutely vital. Additionally, you need to be familiar with hearing English, with exam techniques, and with listening for specific details in both conversations and monologues. Get used to the format of the IELTS exam and the wording used in listening questions, and then on exam day you must read these instructions very carefully. It is easy to make small, silly mistakes.

DETAILS OF ASSIGNMENT

Rosa : Oh, there you are. Good. Sorry. I’m a bit leech. There was a long queue. So have you worked out how to deal with this assignment, then?

Student A : No. We’ve only been here a couple of minutes ourselves.

Rosa : Can you just remind me what the task is exactly?

Attempt full listening test…

Student A : Well, there are two no three parts to it. First, we’ve got to write an essay about ways of Q21 collecting data. Then

Rosa : What? The title of the essay Exactly.

Student B : I’ve got it here. Assess the two main methods of collecting daughter in social science research

Rosa : And. How much do we need to write?

Student B : Q22 1500 words? That’s for the essay. Then, for the second part of the assignment, we have to choose one method of data collection and carry out a small-scale study making appropriate use of the method chosen togather data from a least Q23 five subjects.

Rosa : And then we have to write a report on the study.

Student A : That’s right of Q24 3000 to 4000 words.

Rosa : Did you get us far as discussing which form of data collection we should go for questionnaire or interview, isn’t it?

Student B : Yeah. I think we should use a questionnaire. It’ll be so much less time-consuming than organizing interviews. I reckon. Once we’ve agreed on the wording on what we only have to send it out and wait for the response is

Rosa : Yes. I think it probably would be quicker. But what did that article he gave us last week say about the quality of data from questionnaires?

Student B : I’m pretty sure it recommended questionnaire is a sort of highly reliable data. As long as you designed the questionnaire properly in the first place, the doctor will be fine.

Rosa : No, I’m sure it talked about drawbacks as well, didn’t it? Q25 Something about the response, Reed. And the problems you get of it’s too low.

Student B : Yeah, but we only need doctor from five subjects anyway.

Rosa : I suppose so. Another drawback. Q26 I remember it mentioned was that questionnaire data tends not to reveal anything unexpected because it is limited to the questions fixed in advance by the researcher.

Student B : Come on, Rosa. This is only a practice. It’s not meant to be really research, is it?

Rosa : Whoa. I sure about that. Maybe you’d better go through the article again, just to be sure. Can you remember what it was called

Student B : Sample surveys and social science research? I think my Q27 Mehta

Rosa : M E H T A.

Student B : Yeah, and he also recommended a more recent book called It’s a Q28 Survey Research by Bell. I think it’s in that series published by Q29 London University,

Student A : And if we try to use interviews instead, I saw a book in the departmental library. That’ll be helpful. It’s called interviews that work by Wilson, published in Oxford in Q30 1988

Rosa : Right? Oh, I’ve got a tutorial now. Can we meet up again later this week? What about Friday morning

Student A : Suits? May 11 o’clock.

Rosa : Fine.

Student B : Before Friday. I think we should all look through the reading list.

Assignment on Sleep and Dreams – IELTS Listening Answers with Explanations

1 Answer:  B

Question Type:  Multiple- Choice Questions

Answer Explanation:   In the conversation, Luke expresses, “I mean, most of my dreams aren’t that interesting anyway, but what it said was that if we remembered everything, we might get mixed up about what actually happened and what we dreamed.” We can deduce from these statements that Luke read that a common reason for forgetting dreams is to avoid confusion between what is real and what is dreamed. Hence, the answer is B.

2  Answer:  A

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Susie mentions, “Yeah, many people have a story of it happening to them, but the explanation I’ve read is that for each dream that comes true, we have thousands that don’t.” It is evident from these statements that Luke and Susie share the view that dreams predicting the future may simply be a result of chance. Therefore, the accurate answer is C.

3 Answer:  C

Answer Explanation:  During the conversation, Susie mentions, “But most preschool children take a short nap during the day, don’t they? Some students conducted an experiment here last term to determine at what age kids should stop having naps. However, they didn’t really find a conclusive answer. They invested a significant amount of time in figuring out the most suitable methodology, but the results didn’t reveal any apparent patterns.” We can infer that Susie is stating that a study on preschool children taking short naps during the day did not yield clear conclusions. Therefore, the accurate answer is “C.”

4 Answer:  C

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Luke mentions, “Right. Anyway, let’s consider our assignment. Last time, I faced challenges in the final stage, where we had to explain and justify our perceived level of success.” These statements suggest that in their previous assignment, both students encountered difficulties in self-assessment. Consequently, the accurate answer is C.

5 Answer:  history

Question Type:  Flowchart Completion

Answer Explanation:  According to the conversation, Luke suggests, “Let’s involve individuals from a different department. How about history?” It is evident that twelve students from the history department will be included. Therefore, the accurate answer is “history.”

6  Answer:  paper

Answer Explanation:  In the discussion, Susie points out that in this situation, using paper might be preferable since they will be completing it right after waking up. It is evident that the answers will be on the papers. Hence, the correct response is “papers.”

7  Answer:  humans/ people

Answer Explanation:  During the conversation, Luke says, “We need to consult the ethical guidelines for this type of research,” and Susie adds that special regulations apply because their experiment involves humans. It is apparent from these statements that one should verify ethical guidelines when conducting research involving humans or people. Thus, the accurate answer is “humans/people.”

8 Answer:  pass

Answer Explanation:  As per the discussion, Luke mentions, “Yes, I examined those for a different assignment I completed. There’s a dedicated portion on risk assessment and another segment on ensuring they don’t experience any undue stress.” Therefore, it is evident that they should guarantee the assessment of risks and minimize stress. Consequently, the accurate answer is “stress.”

9 Answer:  graph

Answer Explanation:   During the discussion, Susie mentions, “After gathering our data, we need to analyze it and determine the correlation between our two variables, which are time spent sleeping and the number of dreams. Subsequently, we should visually present our findings in a graph.” This indicates that the correct response is to perform the calculation with correlation and create a graph. Consequently, the accurate answer is “graph.”

10 Answer:  evaluate

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Luke states that one thing they need to do is “think about our research and evaluate it.” From this statement, it’s clear that Luke believes the research should be evaluated. Therefore, the correct answer that aligns with what Luke said is “evaluate.”
