A book review is not a book report . Resist the temptation to summarize the character, plot , theme, and setting, which was probably the formula you used in your high school English classes. Your readers are not interested in having the book re-told to them, and are certainly not interested in having the ending spoiled.

To become a legitimate book reviewer, you need to be able to tell your readers whether the book you are reviewing is interesting, thorough, original, and worth spending money on (or at least borrowing from the library).

Preparing to write a review

Before writing a book review, you must, of course, read the book. Reading the first page, last page, and dust jacket won't cut it—you must read the book in its entirety, making quick notes about your impressions as you read.

We also recommend that you ask yourself questions as you read. If the book is non-fiction, ask yourself, "Does the author have a clear argument that he or she is trying to prove? Is it original? Does he or she prove the argument successfully? Are the arguments sound? Is it well-researched and well-written? Does the author omit any information that would have been relevant?"

For a work of fiction, ask yourself, "Is this work original? Are the characters well-rounded and believable? Does the plot twist, turn, and thicken, or does it plod along? Does the book address universal themes? Is the dialogue realistic?"

Make notes about the author's writing style: Is it irreverent or dry? Fast-paced or excruciatingly detailed? These are all things that potential readers will want to know. As a reviewer, you must tell them.

Get to the point

When you begin writing the review, think about what your thesis is. Will your review be favorable, or do you plan to advise your readers to spend their money elsewhere? Just like in a college paper, remember to make your thesis known in the first few lines of your review. This will help your reader focus and will provide you with an argument for your review.

Don't forget the details

Briefly include some biographical information about the author at the beginning of your review. Is this his or her first book? If not, what types of books has he or she written before? How has his or her background qualified him or her to write about this particular subject? Also, be sure to include the book's complete title, the number of pages it has, its publisher, and its price.

Before launching into your nuanced and cerebral analysis, briefly tell the reader what the book is about, its genre, and who its intended audience is. Is the book designed for mass commercial appeal or for a select group of academic specialists? Providing this information at the beginning will let readers know if they're interested in reading the entire review.

Support your argument with direct quotes

Just as you would in academic writing , carefully select passages from the book you are reviewing to support your argument. These passages will help readers understand what you mean when you write that the book is a tender love story, a violent murder mystery, or a dull yawner. Since a book review is generally quite short (less than 1,000 words), we suggest selecting brief passages.

Try to use a natural, informal tone. A book review is not rocket science; you are simply communicating your impressions and opinions of an author's work. What's more, always remember to edit and proofread your review multiple times before publishing it. If you're going to rip a novel apart for being overly verbose and hard to follow, you'd better triple check to make sure your review is grammatically sound and succinct!

How To Write An Amazon Book Review

Authors depend on book reviews written by readers. If you read a lot of books, and you don’t know this yet, you can read about why here , and here , and other places too. It’s good information to have. Writers and readers have always had a close relationship, unless maybe if you’re Jonathan Franzen telling Oprah you’re too good for her book club but then in that case I don’t know what to do with you.

In any event, I recently had a conversation with good friend who happens to be very smart and also a radiologist (!!), and she told me she loved my novels but had no idea how to leave a review on Amazon. I thought that was hilarious and also worthy of a blog post.

So, dear friend (you know who you are), this blog post is for you. Here’s how you leave a book review on Amazon.

Step 1. Navigate to the book’s page on Amazon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not need to have purchased the book on Amazon to leave a review on Amazon. In fact, DON’T purchase the book on Amazon. Go buy it at your local indie bookstore, and then leave a review on Amazon. HAHAHAHA.

(For the purposes of this demonstration I’m using a great book I recently read that is probably way not literary enough for Jonathan Franzen. THE BOOK WAS AMAZING. Go buy it .)

2. Scroll down to the Customer Reviews section of the page, located just under the author’s bio. There is a button that says, “Write a customer review.” CLICK IT.

3. You will be taken to the “Your Reviews” page. Cool! The book you have selected to review will be at the top.

4. Click the answer to “How is the author’s writing?” and the review panel for that book will expand. Super!

5. Now you can answer the questions and click on the scale of 1-5 stars.

Obviously this AMAZING book gets 5 stars.

6. Click inside the box that says “Write your review here” and write. Provide a TITLE for your review. THEN, click the SUBMIT button!

What should you write? Start with 1-2 sentences (or more) that will help readers understand how you feel about the book. If you want to write more, great! But don’t make writing book reviews such a burden that you don’t want to do it.

7. You’ll be taken back to the “Your Reviews” page where you’ll get a confirmation message.

You will receive an email from Amazon when your review is posted. OMG wasn’t that super easy. Let’s do it again.

How To Write a Fiction Book Review

Before getting to the ‘how to’, a word about why you might want to review fiction! Here are some reasons:

to spread the word about books you love – it can be a way of saying ‘thank you’ to the author for a great read
to hone your creative writing skills: a thorough analysis of others’ work improves our own
for some experience of the world of publishing and book publicity
to engage with communities of fellow literature lovers
to establish your competence in a genre or area
to promote the value of the arts (e.g., for their role in educating empathy, openness and cross-cultural understanding).

For me, the last of these points is really important. I’ve therefore reviewed a great deal of literature in translation for The European Literature Network , opera for Seen and Heard International and arts & culture topics for Talking Humanities and others.

So, what to consider when reviewing a work of fiction? Here are my top ten tips.

The title says it all: smoking kills – though in the case of this novel, the victim is not the smoker but those he kills (‘and not through passive smoking,’ he clarifies) in order to enjoy the pleasures of a cigarette. We’re firmly in humour noir territory: the book’s incisive, satirical take on modern-day life offers a succession of laugh-out-loud moments. [1]
What might drive a left-wing intellectual to espouse xenophobic views and defend the indefensible? How might the community around him react? How would you react if he were your father? In Autopsy of a Father, Pascale Kramer poses uncomfortable questions and tests your tolerance of disquiet. [2]
‘“Fate,” said Arthur. “The capital letter F. But chance is a powerful force, and suddenly you acquire a Fate that was never assigned to you. Some kind of accidental fate. It happens in a flash.”’ [3 ]
E.g.: One of the most original novels I’ve read in a long time, The Core of the Sun is set in an alternative present – in the “Eusistocratic Republic of Finland”. [4]
E.g.: Caterina’s process of reconstruction involves acquiring that part of herself which she left to her twin. […] But as she learns to take care of their elderly mother, of Olivia’s son and of a young neighbour who has lost her little girl, she understands that it was too simple for her and others to rely on Olivia. [5]
Does it interrogate and challenge any stereotypes? Or the opposite?
Does it prompt us to read relevant books?
An example of questions raised: Raimo leaves readers to judge: was there any love at all on his part, or only desire, fetishism, possession and the drive to dominate, self-justified with the word ‘love’? Can any of these ever coexist with love, or do they often taint it, but only to hardly perceptible and therefore unrecognised degrees? [6]
What, if anything, will move us? Or amuse us, etc?
What causes that response? It could be an episode, or the language, or…
E.g.: It would be incorrect to infer too much neatness from the symmetries in the book’s structure. The subtle play of balance and counterbalance constantly engages the reader, while offering a reassuring framework to explore the chaos of complex issues with no easy answers. [7]
E.g.: ‘ A Whole Life’ attests to the enduring value of just this kind of ‘lightness’ – a lightness of touch which offsets the depth of Robert Seethaler’s themes, distilling them into thoughts and images that linger in the reader’s mind. [8]
The ones you choose should illustrate your points
Try to find one or two that are representative of the book as a whole
E.g.: He possesses the ability to capture the joy of the earth warmed by the sun under his “night-damp feet”, the wood which “had stored the warmth of the last days of summer and smelled of dry moss and resin”, and the coolness of a flat rock on which he lies down. [9]

sense of place
The writing alternates wit and humour with darkness and melancholy, dramatic tension with aphorisms, the real with the surreal, poignant observation with optimism. The rhythm of the prose is thus pleasantly engaging, and the plot suspenseful – not least due to some ethically questionable choices on the protagonist’s part – but more compelling still is the development of the themes over the story’s arc. Antoine Laurain succeeds in creating a first-person narrator who is whimsically and yet realistically unaware of the full depth of his unhappiness until he has distanced himself from it. [10]
Authors of intimate stories that reflect the course of a country’s historical fortunes face a challenge: to create fictional protagonists we’ll care about without their writerly imagination being clipped by the magnitude and details of nationally significant events. Aareleid deftly overcomes that challenge, giving us believable human beings through the eyes of… [11]
E.g.: The themes may bring to mind Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, but it would be a disservice to both authors to insist on comparisons. [12]
E.g.: This is a book which challenges you to work hard and amply rewards you for it: a gripping read in its own right, and fiction that enhances our engagement with the world we inhabit. [13]

Another, more general, tip? Read the work of top professional reviewers such as Claire Armitstead , Boyd Tonkin , Fiammetta Rocco and Rosie Goldsmith to keep learning from the best!

How to Write a Quick and Easy Book Review

Always give your honest and genuine feedback on how a book made you feel. Add your own voice and personality to your reviews. Let’s Begin! 1. Start your review with a hook or sentence that includes the book title, name of the author and how much you enjoyed the story based on your star rating choice. (liked, enjoyed, loved) Example: A page turner from start to finish! I absolutely loved ABC by XYZ. 2. Include at least two of the following in a sentence (or more). Genre: Mention the genre or sub-genre (mystery, romance, women’s fiction, paranormal, historical romance, small town romance, etc.) and if the book is a stand alone or part of a series (number of the book and the name of the series). This appears in the book description, but sometimes readers skip it and go directly to check ratings and reviews. Book covers can be deceiving. (See why your review is important?!) Characteristics: Use two or three words that best describes the story. (E.g., hilarious, a page turner, romantic, witty dialogue, chemistry, passionate, family drama, gory, suspenseful, dramatic, second chance story, etc.) Apeal: what appealed most to you about the story? (Ex. the main characters, secondary characters, plot, topic or subject, location, pets, etc.) Explain why. Writing: How would you describe the author’s writing style? What do you like about her/his voice? Heat Levet: Let others know the heat level of the book if it has romantic elements. (E.g., sweet, sexy, steamy, erotic) Trigger Warning : Mention if the story touches on sensitive topics that may cause triggers. (E.g., Domestic violence, abuse, cancer, infertility, PTSD, adultery, sexual assault, etc.) Narrator: If you listened to an audiobook let readers know if you enjoyed the narrator’s voice and/or any particular traits about her/his storytelling style. Also, mention if you’d like to listen to more audiobooks by this narrator. **Please DO NOT include spoilers. 3. Finally, end your review letting readers know if you would recommend the book, or if you look forward to reading more books by the author or the series. See? QUICK and EASY!

If you didn’t like a book, explain why. Some may not like a book because the hero curses a lot, or it’s too gory or the heat level is too steamy. Others may be okay with that, and even be encouraged to read the book! Book bloggers- you can use this as a guide to help get started with your reviews. I’d say this is an appetizer version. On this site, you can find a wealth of information on reviewing books from the perspective of both the reviewer and the writer. You can also find a stack of book reviews covering a wide range of genres.

What Is A Book Review?

A book review is simply an expression of your honest thoughts on a book that you’ve read or tried to read.

Your review of the book could range from a sentence or two to an essay. Different book reviews tend to focus on different things. Some may break down the characters , the plot, the worldbuilding and other features.

Nowadays, a book review could consist of a written piece, posted on blogs or online platforms, or it could come in the form of a vlog on platforms like YouTube, Instagram or TikTok. Let’s take a look at that side of it in more detail.

Where To Submit Book Reviews

Nowadays there are scores of places where you can share and submit your book reviews. Here’s a breakdown:

Social media platforms – On Instagram, you can now become part of a book-loving community called Bookstagram. These bookworms share pictures of their books and videos of their reading experiences. The same is the case over on TikTok where the BookTok community is thriving.
Goodreads – This is arguably the biggest website for books and reviews. You can find pretty much any book and leave a rating or couple that up with a written review.
YouTube – video book reviews by Booktubers are becoming more and more popular. Humans are visual creatures and a video format for a review can make for a more entertaining experience.
Amazon – this is the biggest marketplace for books by far. Leaving a book review here is massively important. It helps the authors out and helps other readers work out what to read next.

Why Write A Book Review?

When an author invests a significant period of their life to write a book, hearing from someone who’s read it is a huge deal.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you want to tell them how much you hated the book, then they’re probably not going to be too enthused.

But to hear how much you connected with it, how you loved the characters and enjoyed the twists and turns, that’s the magical fuel that keeps writers going. It’s one of the reasons they bravely share their work with the world in the first place, on the off chance that someone might like it.

So leaving a book review is important. It’s one of the most important things you can do as a reader. And it doesn’t have to be anything too deep. Just a few words or sentences are enough, something that tells the author what you enjoyed.

How To Write A Book Review

When you write a book review, it’s similar to having a conversation with someone about a book you’ve recently read. Your aim is to share your experience and help others make a decision as to whether or not they want to read it too.

To begin writing a book review, you should start by reading the book cover to cover, taking notes as you go along. Pay attention to the plot , characters and development , writing and prose style , and any themes or premises that the author tries to convey. Let’s take a look at the other side of the coin—a writer seeking a book review.

Getting a book review isn’t straightforward. The obvious issue is that there are only so many book reviewers and millions of books—a figure which grows each year.

With more books than humans available to read and review, competition is understandably fierce. The task for the writer, then, is to attract the attention of potential book reviewers and bloggers.

Doing this isn’t easy. However, there are a few things you can work on. Firstly, nail your pitch. Most of us will only get one chance to woo a book reviewer, and usually, that takes place via an email or social media message.

In those few words, you need to explain why that person will enjoy your book. There are ways you can follow to increase the chance of success, which I share in another guide, the link to which you can find at the bottom of this section. But it remains very much a numbers game. You simply need to send out a lot of requests and hope for the best. Nailing your pitch will stand you in good stead.

5 Steps to Writing a Book Review

As a reviewer, you’re in a great position: you’re introducing a reader to something they don’t have in front of them but might want to have. You’re sharing your experience of a book with them. You can’t know what their tastes are like, but you can give them as full a picture as possible, even in just 100 words, so they can make up their own mind.

Give us some context for the book

Tell us a bit about the author, the type of book it is, the kind of writing it reminds you of. Little contextual details can set the scene and help situate the reader.

Begin with description: What makes this book particularly itself?

A review isn’t a space to like/dislike but to allow the reader to make up their own mind…even when you have criticisms. Succinctly, but in detail, explain the book’s key ideas/plot points (avoid spoilers!) and its stylistic/formal features.

Provide some quotations from the book so we can get a feel for it.

If you’re trying to share the book, the book’s own words are a great starting place. React to and explain them: show us what you see in them.

Explain why we should spend time with the book ourselves

You care enough about his book to spend time reviewing it. What makes you care? Why might it matter to a reader? What does it allow us to think, feel, or see?

End with an overall argument

Think about what the reader might learn from your review even if they don’t read the book. Perhaps you can tell us something that sums up the book’s place in our world, or even tell us something important about books and writing.

How to write a picture book review is not as difficult as you might imagine. Everyone has an opinion about the items they buy. Reviewers are candid and honest, but when it comes to leaving a review about a book they enjoyed … they almost always stop. Reviews are critical to authors on Amazon, especially for those of us who are self-published. A review helps other readers determine if they want to invest the money in buying the book or not, but it also helps to boost the book so other readers can find it.

Writing a Book Review

Writing a book review is no different than reviewing a product you have purchased online. Yet, no matter how many times I politely request a book review, there are those readers who do not follow through. I have given this one thought and I believe that readers are uncertain about how to write a picture book review. I am hoping that this post will help those who are hesitant to post a review.

We all know that when we are looking to purchase an item, the first thing we look at are the reviews. I want to know what others are saying before I place my order. An author’s sales are closely tied to the reviews it receives.

Book Review Basics

First, your book review is about the book and your personal experience with the book. It is not about your writing skills. You do not have to be clever or entertaining when writing a review. Simply review your experience or in this case a child’s experience with the book.

Second, the book review is about the reader, not about the author . Put the reader first. The reader wants to know if he or she should read the book. What did you like about the book? Was there something that you related to your own childhood? Was there something you think might upset a child? Write for the reader, not the author.

Third, be honest in your review. Give an honest opinion of the book from your perspective. Authors do read all reviews, both good and bad help us to learn how where we can improve our writing. It is perfectly fine not to like a book. When I am searching for a book I appreciate that the person has taken the time to share their thoughts and why they did not like the book. Honesty serves the reader and the author equally.

Rating a Picture Book

Both Amazon and Goodreads will ask you to rate the book, usually from 1 to 5. It is common practice for many reviewers to limit their use of 1 and a 5. Amazon rating of 3 is considered borderline for success. A rating of 2 is reserved for a book you really don’t like and a 1 for complete failure. I have no problem giving a book a ratings of 5 when I think a book has been well written and I back it up my rating with specific comments.

Your first step when writing a picture book review is to read the book. Not just skim the book, but read it aloud or share it with a child. Stop on each page to read the text and look at each of the illustrations. Reading the book a second time will allow you to discover new things about the text and illustrations. The second reading will help you to write your review.

Questions to Guide Your Review

What did you like about the story or illustrations? Were you disappointed or confused in any way? Did your child ask you to read it again? What did they like about the book?
Try to give specific examples of what you liked or disliked about the book, did you like or relate to one of the characters, was the story to slow or too fast, were there enough details, did it have a satisfying ending?
What did other reviewers say about the book? Do you agree or disagree? I like to read other reviews before posting my review. I may agree with something they posted, but I want to add my personal experience to the conversation.

How Long Should a Book Review Be?

Book reviews do not need to be a specific length. Take a good look at some of the reviews. Keep it short and simple (KISS) is the way to go when giving a review. Give the review the detail it needs to pass on your perspective. Basically everyone wants to know if the book is good or bad and why. I usually write about 5 sentences. If I really like the book I tend to add more detail and a few more sentences.

Always Be Honest

If you have received an advance copy of the book to review, tell your reader. Always be honest to be considered a trusted relevant reviewer. Amazon takes the time to review each book review before it will post your review. They also will report if you are are verified purchaser. Meaning that you have purchased that book. Amazon will look to see if you are a frequent shopper and reviewer. They may refuse to post your review and you can respond to their email and find out their reason.

iTunes is not included in the generator because, in order to publish directly through Apple Books, you must use their software and they naturally have their own HTML rules for this.

1. Sign into your Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing account here by clicking the yellow sign up button.

2. Once signed in, navigate to your ‘Bookshelf’ and select the book you’d like to edit. Alternatively, create a new book by clicking on the button seen below.

3. Scroll down to the section ‘Description.’

4. Paste your description directly into this box. Click ‘save and continue’ at the bottom of the page. If you’re publishing your story for the first time, you’ll have to upload your manuscript and cover before you can proceed. Click ‘save and continue’ again, set your pricing, and click ‘publish’ thereafter.

5. After clicking ‘publish’ your description may take up to 72 hours to update.

Another method you might use is by going through Amazon Author Central. You can do that as follows:

1. Sign into your Amazon Author Central account here . This is where you manage your author pages, editorial reviews, add books to your profile, and can even edit your book description for books.

2. Select the ‘Books’ tab at the top of the page.

3. If you’ve correctly added your books to your author page , you’ll see a list of books and the one you want to edit. If not, you can add a book to your author page by clicking this button and entering the books name:

4. Once you have your book present on the books page, click on it.

5. Here you’ll find your ‘Product Description.’ Click the ‘Edit’ button, hit ‘Edit HTML’ and paste in your HTML description and hit ‘Preview.’

6. If you’re satisfied with how your product description looks, hit ‘Save Changes.’

7. Important to note: if you use this method, whenever you make changes to your book on KDP, your book description will revert to the one you originally used in KDP when first publishing your book. It’s easier to just change the book description on KDP and allow the book to update.

1. To create an Amazon Editorial Review, make sure to follow Amazon’s guidelines when using the Kindlepreneur Editorial Review Generator. Amazon’s guidelines for review creation are as follows:

2. Editorial reviews can be reviews left by other authors, publications, or even some of the highlights of the reviews your readers have left for you. Select a few from your book reviews then click on the Amazon Editorial Review Generator.

3. Enter your review text. Separate each review onto a separate line. You can bold or italicize reviews as you wish. You can even add in five little stars.

4. Once you’re satisfied with how your editorial reviews look, hit the ‘Generate My Code’ button.

5. You now have your handy HTML code that you can paste directly into the HTML editing pane in your Amazon Editorial Review section.

6. Once you have your code, sign into your Amazon Author Central account here .

7. Select the ‘Books’ tab at the top of the page.

8. If you’ve correctly added your books to your author page, you’ll see a list of books and the one you want to edit. If not, you can add a book to your author page by clicking this button and entering the books name:

10. Here, you’ll find your Editorial Review section.

5. Paste your description into the block then hit the ‘Save and return to Library’ button on the right.

There are two handy methods for spacing paragraphs in your book description.
