My Experience of Journey by Train

I have always been an avid supporter of train journeys. My involvement with train journeys began in childhood . I live in Lucknow and from here I have undertaken many train journeys. Furthermore, since childhood, I have paid several visits to the hill station of Almora to meet my relatives. Almora is a hill station located in the state of Uttarakhand. Most noteworthy, Almora is situated in the Himalayan mountain region. Due to this, trains cannot travel directly to Almora. Consequently, Kathgodam is the last town station accessible by trains before the mountain range begins.

The trip from Lucknow to kathgodam is quite a lively experience. I have always ensured the reservation of my seats beforehand. So, my train journey begins from Lucknow railway station. As the train undergoes motion and leaves the Lucknow railway station, my excitement begins to rise. Moreover, as the train gathers speed, a thrilling feeling overtakes me.

My train journey from Lucknow to Kathgodam is probably 8-10 hours duration. However, I enjoy every minute of it in spite of the journey being so long. Furthermore, all along the journey, one can purchase items of food and drinks. I almost always purchase meals and refreshments at least twice in the journey.

When slumber overtakes me, I make use of the sleeping berth. I personally find sleeping on the train berth very comfortable. When I wake after a deep sleep, mountains are visible from a distance. Moreover, as the train approaches Kathgodam with menacing speed, the view of mountains gets bigger and bigger. Also, my amusement greatly rises as I see the Himalayas draw closer. Finally, as the train stops at Kathgodam, my delightful train journey comes to an end.

A Journey by Train Essay/Paragraph

During last summer vacation, I went on a family trip to Puri with my family. This was my first long journey by train. We reached the Howrah railway station with all our luggage quite early. The train departed from Howrah at around 9 o’clock in the morning. When I looked outside everything was running behind, I loved that scene. The train was moving quite fast. The whole train was crowded.

After boarding, we had our breakfast. I always prefer a window seat, because I can enjoy beautiful nature from there. I was impressed by the beauty of the landscape. Watching the beautiful natural scenes outside gave me extreme happiness. The train finally reached the Puri station at 6 o’clock in the evening. It was an exciting train journey.

Short Essay on A Journey by Train

Train journeys are always very exciting. We get to meet a lot of new people. Two weeks back had a train journey. The name of the train was Howrah-Dhanbad Black Diamond Express. My destination was Asansol. The train departed from Howrah around 6.40 in the morning. The weather was pleasant and I took a window seat.

Most of the passengers inside the train compartment were either reading a newspaper or sleeping. I started reading one of my favourite novels. The constant yelling of the hawkers forced me to close the book and look out of the window. Around 8.30 in the morning I bought a cup of coffee and a packet of biscuits from a hawker. Having small sips in the coffee concentrated on the visuals and images that changed rapidly outside the train compartment.

I noticed that concrete jungle have paved its way to lush green fields and ponds with trees surrounding them. Farmers were tilling children were going to school through the mud track. The ambiance outside was serene and in complete contrast with the atmosphere inside the train.

Introduction:

Once I read a poem. I still remember some of  its lines as follows:

“All of the sights of the hill and the plain Fly as thick as driving rain; And ever again, in the wink of an eye Painted stations whistle by.” (From A Railway Carriage-RL Stevenson)

A journey by a speeding train is an exciting experience. The modern age seems to be obsessed with speed. So people prefer to travel by the railways than by road.

Description of the Journey:

One day, my father announced that we were going to visit Shantiniketan during the winter holidays. I was simply thrilled. On the scheduled day, we reached Howrah station in the morning. The Shantiniketan Express stood majestically at the platform. The station was humming with the din and bustle. There were rings of people before the ticket counters. We entered a compartment and settled down for the journey. I managed a seat beside a window. Soon the signal was green at the far end of the platform. Within a minute, the train began to move. We glided out of the station. Then it picked up speed.

As the train thundered on, I surrendered my ears to the rattle of the train wheels. They were making rickety-rackety sounds when they rolled over the tracks. I looked outside through the window to get a view of the Nature outside. The train was passing by harvested fields, meadows, brooklets, and small ponds. Through the window, the world outside looked like a motion picture. Everything looked very bright and pleasant in the morning sunshine.

I looked about my compartment. Father was flipping through a magazine. Mother was chatting with an elderly couple. The hawkers and vendors were selling various foodstuffs. A beggar was singing a song while begging. In the meantime, the train reached at Guskara station. After half an hour it reached Bolpur.

My Feelings:

I got spellbound to see the fantastic wild beauty of nature through the window. The greatness of God manifested in nature’s creations. I remembered some lines of a poem-

“The true pleasing spirits sight’s That may breed true love’s delights” (Nicholas Breton)

The breeze was gentle, fresh, glorious, and a pleasure to breathe. It was pouring into our compartment from outside. I sometimes lost my sense of individuality and seemed to expand through the window. Thus, I wanted to establish a magical link with nature.

Conclusion:

Thus ended my first train journey. This journey was so pleasant that l experienced an intense high.

A Journey by Train Essay

A train is not just a transport vehicle. It connects people; it provides access to jobs, communities and goods. It delivers vital social services. Trains are the backbone of the transportation system, which help in creating a sustainable economy. We have often read books and magazines that mention the beautiful experience of train journeys. By reading them, our heart fills with adventure, thrill and happiness.

My First Experience of Train Journey

A journey by train always excites me. It is fun to travel by train. I have been travelling by train since my childhood. The first time I experienced the train journey was when I was studying in Class 6. During my summer vacation, my parents planned to visit Nainital. My father had already booked the train tickets for AC3 Class two months before.

We were staying in Lucknow, and from there, our train journey began. We reached Lucknow Charbagh Station one hour before the train departure time. Lucknow station was 7-8 km far away from our home. So, my father booked a taxi, and we reached Lucknow station. After reaching the station, my father checked for the train timing and platform number on which the train had to arrive. The train was on time, and we had to go to platform number 5. We did not have much luggage, so we did not take coolies. My father took 2 suitcases, and my mother took one bag. Before going to platform number 5, we purchased some chips, water bottles and biscuits.

The station was crowded with people. There were tea stalls, food counters, coolies and many other passengers like us waiting for their train. I could hear a lot of noise in the station, which was due to train announcements, coolies and tea sellers. Hearing the noise and looking at the trains as 1 hour passed, I didn’t get to know. Now, it was time for our train to arrive. We comfortably entered the train and reached our seats. My seat was in the lower berth, so I was happy that I could see all the views from my window seat.

The train gave a hooter sound, and then it started. I was so excited and filled with curiosity and enthusiasm. As the train has taken up speed, I feel as if trees and homes are moving along with us. I asked my mother, “Is it really happening?” Then, my mother replied, “Trees and homes are not moving. As we are sitting in the train and the train is moving at a fast speed, that is why things around us seem to be moving along with us. In reality, we are moving, and other things are static in their respective places.” Then, I understood the concept. For some time, I was peacefully enjoying the scene from my window.

On the train, my experience was very joyful. In our front seat, there was also one family. We played the ludo game, name the places and antakshari. In between the games, we also had snacks and lunch. The train had stopped at the major station, and people were getting down and sitting up on the train. As the train stops at any station, many of the food sellers enter the train to sell their items and get down when the train starts running. This process repeats at every station where the train stops.

Finally, after 10 hours of travelling, it was time for the Kathgodam station to arrive, where we had to get down. Before the Kathgodam station, I could see the mountains and greenery from the window seat. At that time, I got to know that we had come to Hill station to enjoy our summer vacation. We got down in Kathgodam station, and from there, we booked a taxi for Nainital. After 2 hours of road journey, we reached Nainital.

Nainital is such a beautiful place. It is surrounded by mountains all around. From the mountains, a lake called “Nani Lake” was flowing, which increased the beauty of Nainital. The temperature of the Nainital was so pleasant that we felt relieved from summer and heat. We did many activities like boat riding and mountain climbing. We have visited many sites and also done a lot of shopping. After spending 3 days in Nainital, we again took a train from Kathgodam station to Lucknow and came back home. The experience was awesome for me. I will never forget this enjoyable journey by train.

Essay on Train Journey

A train is not just a vehicle. It carries emotion; it carries the joy of moving forward, it carries the thrill of speed. Many times, when we read about any train journey in a book or on the internet, we are told the story of traveling in inter-state trains. However, a local train-journey is not devoid of thrill, adventure and happiness either. There is a thrill of being on time, the adventure of exploring local sites and the happiness of being able to travel comfortably and safely.

Details of My Memorable Train Journey

Last week I traveled to ____________ from _____________ on a local train. It was my maiden train journey. I had always dreamt of visiting ___________ and too by a Train. I was very excited and had made all the arrangements on the previous night. I woke up earlier that day, had my bath and  breakfast. I prepared myself for the journey I was very excited about, I wore my favorite clothes and took some light snacks with me.  I reached the station at 10 am. Just from the first look at the station I knew this was going to be a very thrilling and adventurous journey. The station itself had many stories to tell. There were so many people- families, office-goers, masons, laborers, vendors, the fruit hawkers and food sellers and so on. All looked so busy, so full of life.  I checked into the station and located the platform where my Train was going to arrive. I reached the particular platform no. and sat on one of the many available benches. There were many people waiting for their respective trains. One train arrived just 5 mins after I reached the platform but that was to a separate destination and my train was coming after that. People boarded that train, it waited for a few minutes and after that it departed. As I was sitting in the station for my train to arrive, I saw many trains come and go at different platforms. A deep realization engulfed me- the trains come and go, the station remains the same.

My Experience of Train Journey

Almost 15 minutes later, our train arrived. The train was pretty new and had a very attractive color combination of maroon and blue painted on it. It had “Made In India” written on it in  big letters and our national flag was painted next to it. I felt very proud about it and got more excited about this journey. Since this was my first time travelling by train, I wanted to experience the moment at its fullest and thus before boarding the train I waited to see how the passengers boarded the train and how people wanted to get in first so that they could sit on a seat. After I was done with my experience, I boarded the train before its departure time. I got into the train and was eagerly looking for a seat so that I could sit.  There was so much rush as it was office hour. At first, there was no seat for us to sit. All those who were standing were trying to get themselves a seat but once we moved for a few minutes, everyone settled with their position in the Train, some got a seat and some didn’t. The train started moving and the station moved backwards. The sound it created as the Train moved was something new to me, I had heard it in the movies and dramas but experiencing it first hand was something very enthralling. I was imagining how this sound was being created as the train rolled on the tracks, the giant size and huge weight of the train could be realized as the train accelerated and the sound got louder. It felt so amazing to imagine that the train was still but the trees and the houses were moving. However, it was hard for me to look out from the window because of the crowd. I still managed to stand near the window and get myself a look outside. There were green meadows somewhere and at some places we could see the concrete jungles, buildings and houses constructed alongside the train track. The beauty of green meadows is what I liked the most and wished we could have more of them, the beauty of nature I experienced in the moving train seemed to be more lively and soothing than the commercial areas. There were different kinds of people in the train involved in distinct activities of their own, some in the groups and some alone. The office goers were the regular commuters, so they remained in their group and talked about politics and the sports. The women in the train were sitting and wiping the sweat off their faces. I saw two senior citizens. They were standing. It felt good to see that some of the passengers offered their seats to those two people. However, there were some rowdies too in the train who were standing near the door and were blocking the entrance. People were finding it hard to enter the train because of them.

As two or three stations passed, the crowd in the train became thin. Now, I can enjoy the journey. I got a seat. The typical sound of the train moving had a rhythm to it. It felt musical. While seated, I could feel the rhythm of the moving train in a better way. I grabbed the snacks I had with me and started to enjoy the journey. Outside the window, I could see the meadows, the houses, the cows and goats. The train was moving at a decent speed and the air from the window brushed my face. It felt good in the sweltering heat. There was a couple sitting on the opposite seat. They had a 5-year old daughter traveling with them. Somehow, the family and I started a conversation and it felt good to meet new people.

I talked to other people in the train as well and they told me about the conveniences the train travel gives them over taking a cab or driving a car themselves. They also explained the difficulties they face in the Train travel like rushin the train, delays in the train timing, cancellation of trains at times and inadequate  seating capacity of the trains. But most of them were very happy with the new trains, people explained that these trains were more comfortable and affordable to them and also the cancellation and delay problems were very less with the new trains.

Train Journey Essay Free PDF Download

While I was on the train, many hawkers boarded the compartment. They were selling different kinds of things. Some were selling toffees and snack items, some were selling files and copies, some were selling perfumes and so on. The speciality of these local train hawkers was, they can outshine any advertisement-writer with their own sales-pitch. Their sales pitches were not bland and dry. Some sang songs, some imitated the politicians while selling things. They had a very distinct sense of literature.

At this point I realized how different forms of employment were generated by introduction of railways and I couldn't even imagine the number of families that were dependent on the trains for their livelihood. I also got to know the fact that Indian railways is the largest employer in India and employs about 1500000 people. The hawkers were changing frequently, they boarded at one station and unboarded after a few stations. Then new hawkers came in at that station and the cycle continued.

There was one thing that I wish I had not experienced. Apart from the green meadows and huge constructions that I saw from the windows, I also saw countless huts and tin-shade houses. There were many slums that were present beside the rail line. The poverty all around was disheartening to see. I could see the children living in these huts and tin houses, somewhere playing and some were helping their parents in doing their work. I wished that they could go to the school and get education so that they could be earning good and could then help their parents and build themselves decent houses. I promised myself to help these poor people when I start earning money.

The train was about to reach my destination station, the rush had again built up and I thought of going near the exit so that it would be easier for me to unboard. I prepared my bag and offered my seat to another person who was standing near my seat. As the train stopped at my destination station, I got down. After leaving the station, I felt like I was living on another planet for the past 40 minutes. It was not a train journey. It was an epiphany.

Short Essay on A Journey by Train – Essay 1 (200 words)

A journey by train is among the most enjoyable journeys. I travel long distance quite often and have travelled via buses, trains as well as aeroplanes. While each of these journeys has its set of benefits, I personally love train journeys.

A journey by train is the best if you have enough time and have to travel long distance. This is the only means of transport that allows you to sleep comfortably during the journey. I prefer travelling at night. I can comfortably sleep in the train during my journey and wake up fresh and head to work during my official trips. One of my most memorable journeys by train was when I travelled from Delhi to Lucknow last year. I went to visit my relatives in Lucknow. During this train journey, I met a group of college students. The group was lively, cheerful and extremely friendly.

As I was sitting right besides them, they offered me some snacks and cold drink. They soon began conversing with me. They narrated some of their experiences and I shared mine. I also gave them career advice. The six hours journey passed very swiftly and we reached Lucknow. As we parted, we exchanged our phone numbers and promised to keep in touch.

Essay on Train Journey – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Train journeys are always fun. They have always excited me. I have been travelling via trains ever since my childhood. My maternal grandparents lived in Kanpur and we stayed in Delhi. We always travelled via night train to reach Kanpur. We visited them twice a year and I really looked forward to this trip not only because I loved meeting my grandparents but also because I really loved the train journey. My sister loved it as much and together we had a lot of fun.

My Most Memorable Train Journey

We mostly went there with our mother during our summer and winter vacations. However, once my aunt and cousins also accompanied us. This was one of the best train journeys of my life. We took to the top berth after having the delicious biryani our mother had cooked for us.

We had already planned that we will stay awake until late at night to enjoy the journey in each other’s company. We began the fun by playing cards. As we finished a game or two, two boys sitting in the middle berth asked us if they could join us. Playing cards is always fun when there are greater number of players involved. So, we agreed. Our game became all the more exciting and we kept playing for about two- three hours. Since our compartment was occupied only by us and those two brothers and their parents, there was no fuss about turning off the lights.

After playing cards, we began a game of dumb charades. It was all the more fun. Since, we had been playing for almost four hours now, we felt hungry and it was snack time. We stealthily took out chips and biscuits from our bags. We chatted, cracked jokes and laughed heartily as we ate snacks. It was almost 2 at night when we decided to sleep.

This was indeed a great experience. I will remember this train journey all my life. I made memories to cherish forever.

Our first term exams had just been over and we were free from the burden of studies at least for a few days. Our school plans excursion trips to various places during the autumn break. I always wanted to go on such a trip and have fun with my friends.

My First Train Journey with Friends

While my parents allowed me to go on local school excursions, they had always been sceptic about sending me on out stationed trips. They thought I was too young and careless and thus feared sending me. I tried to convince them each year I saw the notice about these school trips pasted on the notice board but they refused. However, after a lot of persuading in class VII, my mother promised that she will send me when I reach class IX as I will grow older and become more mature by then.

So, last year I reminded her of her promise. Though reluctant, she agreed to send me on my school trip to Jaipur. She also convinced my father and he gave the written consent along with the amount that had to be deposited for the trip. My joy knew no bounds. Few of my close friends had also got consent from their parents and we were super thrilled about our trip. I was not only excited about visiting Jaipur but also about the train journey.

My Train Journey Experience

I was lucky to get the window seat. It was a day journey of around 5 hours and there was a lot to see outside the window. The sight of small sand hills, green fields and long roads fascinated me and I glued to the window for most part of the journey. For the rest of the journey, we played dumb charades and antakshari which was super fun. I just wished the journey never came to end. However, before we even realized, we reached the Jaipur station. As I roamed around from fort to fort in the Pink city, I dreamt of the train journey back to my home town as I thoroughly enjoyed train journeys. Our train journey back home was as much fun.

Train journeys have always fascinated me. I have gone on quite a few of them but this one was all the more special as I was accompanied by my friends. I am looking forward to more such train journeys.

Essay on My Awesome Train Journey – Essay 4 (500 words)

Train journeys have always fascinated me. Be it a day journey or a night journey I, always prefer travelling by train. During my day journey by train, I love sitting by the window to watch the view outside. I just love the sight of the green fields, huge trees, huts and water bodies. I can sit for hours watching this view from the moving train. What I like about the night journeys is that trains offer a lot of space and comfort. We can lie down comfortably and doze off to sleep. Sleeping in a moving train is an experience of its own and I just love it.

My Train Journey from Shimla to Kalka

While all my train journeys have been memorable there is one that I will cherish forever. This was my train journey from Shimla to Kalka. This train journey was like no other.

We had heard a lot about the Shimla – Kalka train journey and really wanted to experience it. It is said that the train comes under the world heritage list of UNESCO. However, since our plan was made all of a sudden, we could not get the tickets for travelling from Kalka to Shimla which was disappointing.

At first, we thought of cancelling or postponing the trip however then we decided to take a bus to Shimla. The tickets from Shimla to Kalka were available so we booked our return journey by the much talked about toy train that runs on this route. While I was all excited about my trip to Shimla and enjoyed every bit of it with my family, I was constantly dreaming about our journey back home as I couldn’t wait for the toy train experience.

My Awesome Train Journey Experience

We reached the station few minutes before the train departure time. I was thrilled looking at the train and couldn’t wait to board it. We soon kept our luggage in the train and sat on our seats. I grabbed the window seat to witness the scenic view outside. As the train started, I saw the mesmerizing view of the hills covered with pine trees. There was greenery all round. It had rained a night before and thus the flora looked even greener and fresh. It was a breathtaking sight.

The toy train covers a distance of 96 km and there was not a single moment when we got bored during this journey. There was so much to view and experience. The train travels at a slow speed and takes around 5-6 hours to reach Kalka so that we can experience the natural surroundings to the fullest. It goes through 102 tunnels and this makes the journey all the more amazing. It also passes over as many as 864 bridges and offers an experience which is one-of-its-kind. While I sat by the window for most part of my journey, I also went and stood by the train door for around an hour or so to have a closer look at the nature.

Every bit of my train journey from Shimla to Kalka was enjoyable. The experience was simply unmatched. Every train journey lover must experience this at least once in their life time. Nature lovers would love it all the more.

Long Essay on Train Journey: Advantages and Disadvantages – Essay 5 (600 words)

Train journeys are preferred by many owing to the various benefits they offer. However, some people much rather prefer travelling by their own vehicle or buses to avoid the downside of the train journeys. At times, it becomes quite difficult to decide the mode of transport as all these have their own set of pros and cons. Here is a look at the various advantages and disadvantages of train journey:

Advantages of Train Journey

Here are the various advantages of train journey:

  • Space and Comfort

Train is one of the best means of transports if we look in terms of space and comfort. There is enough space to sit and even lie down, a privilege we don’t get in the buses, cars or planes. Kids can easily play board games. Group outings become all the more fun as we can enjoy various games and activities sitting face to face.

  • Long Journeys Made Easy

Since trains offer berths to sleep and washrooms to freshen up, travelling long distance via trains becomes quite easy. The washroom facility is especially one of the main benefits train journeys offer over bus and car journeys.

  • No Restriction on the Amount of Luggage

There is a limit to the amount of luggage one can carry in the aeroplane. Buses also do not have enough space to accommodate a lot of luggage. However, there is no such restriction during the train journeys. If you require carrying a good amount of luggage then train journeys are certainly the best.

  • Safe Option

Train is also considered a safer means to travel compared to buses, cars and aeroplanes. Travelling in hills is especially safer via trains compared to buses and cars.

  • Allows Productive Use of Time

You can easily take out your laptop and work on it while you are travelling via train. You can also read your book comfortably or indulge in other tasks such as knitting and sewing while travelling through train.

Disadvantages of Train Journey

Here are some disadvantages of train journey:

  • Planning Ahead

One of the main difficulties of travelling via train is that you have to plan your journey months or weeks before your travel date. It is difficult to get train tickets for trips that are planned instantly.

  • Difficulty in Reservation

Train reservation is a difficult task. You have to visit the railway station and stand in the queue for hours to get the tickets reserved which is extremely tiring. You can also get the ticket reserved online but that is again a tedious task as the train booking site is too slow.

  • Fixed Schedule

Trains run on a fixed schedule. You may be required to catch trains at odd times and this can be difficult at times. Delay in reaching the railway station even by a few minutes means missing the train and it is difficult to spend time on the railway station if you reach early.

  • Slower Option

Travelling a long distance by train means investing a day or two in journey is unlike planes which can cover same distance within few hours. So it is not a good option for students or working professionals who cannot take so many leaves and spend so much time on travelling.

  • Cleanliness Issue

While trains have washrooms which is considered to be a big plus of the train journeys these are mostly not maintained well. Un-kept and unclean washrooms are a big put off. Their use must be avoided as it can cause infection.

Thus, we see train journeys have a number of advantages however they also have certain disadvantages. While space, comfort and the facility to carry enough luggages attracts travellers to option for train journeys, difficulty of reservation and the need to plan the journey way ahead of the travel date makes them look for other options.

Essay 1 (250 Words) – My Memorable Train Journey

Introduction

Trains always fascinated me since my childhood days. When I was young, I use to run to watch a train because there was a railway line near my house. There was proper barricading still it was visible. The sharp horn or train used to make me feel crazy and forced me to run. I was really very much fond of trains. So, now it was my trip to Mumbai and I was just 10.

A Memorable Journey

Although I have traveled a lot, this trip holds a special place in my heart. It was not my first trip still I was super excited. We visited the railway station at 9 AM and the train was delayed by 2 hours due to bad weather and fog. We were waiting on the platform meanwhile another train came and board the platform. Luckily it was the engine in front of us. I never noticed the engine so carefully; I forced my father to take me closer.

When I went close the driver inside cheered me up and accepted my wish to see the engine from inside. I was just 10 but I can still remember each and every detail I saw and the chauffeur told me. There were a few gear buttons and a small staring wheel. He told me that they never sleep while driving and follow all the rules for the safety of passengers.

Finally, we came down and after some time our train arrived and on the entire journey, I was amused about the engine room and how the drivers run a train. In my entire journey, I asked many questions and my father answered all of them because he is also an engineer and knows about trains.

The way a small seed can have such a big tree similarly a single thought can give you a new direction. From that day I decided to become an engineer and develop technology so that our drivers could also sleep and the journey could be equally enjoyable for the passenger and the chauffeur.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – How Trains Made our Journey Special?

All of us have different memories with trains sometimes we love a journey whereas sometimes we also get bored. Many of us don’t like a train journey when they have to go far. Indian Railways was established on 16th April 1853 under the British Government and by Lord Dalhousie. The first-ever train in India was started in between Bori Bunder to Thane in Mumbai. This was how a train started in India. Before this, people use to travel on foot or on some animals like horse, camel, etc.

What is Special about a Train Journey?

We travel for a purpose sometimes the reason is good and sometimes it can be bad. Depending on the situation one should choose the mode of travel.

In the beginning, there used to be a steam engine and on long-distance travel, people use to get black due to black fume. My grandfather used to tell me about the amazing train journey in the old days.

Gradually diesel engines were introduced and now we have electric engines. The journey was special in every era. Trains connected people and states and also brought a lot of development. It was one of the easiest means of transport.

We all have traveled by train and have a special memory about a special journey; I remember a beautiful moment I had in one of my motherland’s travels.

A Special Trian Journey

We use to live in Ahmedabad because of my father’s occupation and my hometown was in UP at Allahabad. I use to visit my grandparents every year during my summer vacation by train. It was a vacation and I was on my journey to Allahabad. It was a two days journey and I met a small child who was very small and only use to smile and say a very few words. It was a south Indian family traveling to the same destination Sangam.

The child was crying continuously and his family members tried all but failed. I was sitting aside and was watching the incident. Suddenly he started crying on a high note and I was playing with a ball. I step down and offered my ball and luckily the boy stopped crying and started smiling. Everyone amazed and stared staring at me. Soon they got happy and also the child and I played with the child, he enjoyed my company.

Since they were from a south Indian family, they offered some south Indian dishes they brought with them and some tasty snacks. To be honest I really liked the food and this was one of my best train journeys.

I love traveling and it adds a lot of memories and we meet different people and visit different places. We learn and know new things and while visiting a new place I finish my research on my train about the place which helps me to make my trip more memorable and to know the authentic place.

Essay on Train Journey

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Best Train Journey

Nowadays people prefer traveling by plane on a long-distance journey because the train takes a lot of time. But I am just the opposite because I enjoy a train journey. I love traveling and watching new places which we also see from the window. When you travel alone books are the best partners and when you are with family or friends then it is family time. Usually, I love a train journey but I can’t forget one of my school trips.

My School Trip

Every year in the month of August a social and cultural event is organized on different branches of my school. My school has many branches and is present in the entire nation. Every year a new venue is decided and we have to visit that place. I live in Delhi and we have to go to Chennai to represent our school. It was not a trip but we had to represent our school and there were near about 50 students who participated in different events.

It was 5 PM when we started gathering on the platform and meanwhile, the train arrived at 6 PM and we were in. All of us got our seats and soon the train left the station. Normally there are near about 60 berths in an AC coach and we were 50. The entire coach was filled with students and our journey started. It takes 1 day 17 hours to reach Chennai via train. There were some other passengers on remaining berths.

A Journey with Friends

Our journey started and we made different groups there were both boys and girls in our group. You can imagine a bogie full of students and there were only 4 teachers to take care of us. But our teachers were very good they didn’t stop us and they also enjoyed the journey with us. Soon it started to rain and it was an amazing experience to witness the rain on a train with my friends. Soon we started playing antakshari.

The entire bogie was divided into two groups and we started our game. Meanwhile one of the old age men on another birth started singing one of the famous songs ‘Zindagi Ek Safar hai Suhana’ and all of us followed and the entire coach was singing the song. It was an amazing moment and other passengers also enjoyed our company and joined us.

It was not only memorable for us but also for the old man, he told us that in his entire life he never enjoyed a train journey so much. After this, we had our dinner and all of us shared our food and enjoyed that evening. The next day there was a long queue for the washroom, all the students-maintained silence and rushed on the breakfast. The entire journey passed in an amazing way. We played various games and we also practiced our act in between and spend time with our friends.

A train journey can be so amazing, I didn’t realize before. Although I love traveling, this journey was something very close to my heart.

Some Special Moments

  • When we spend some time in a certain place, we start feeling attached and the same happened, after spending near about two days on the train we got used to the environment and the beautiful scenario passing behind seems like a movie on our window. We passed through beautiful mountains rivers and it was raining at the same time.
  • It was so special when our teachers sang with us and also danced, it was just possible because we traveled on train otherwise; we could never enjoy so much on an air route.
  • We were away from our parents but our teachers took care of us and it was really special for me.
  • We shared our thoughts, happiness, food, bed sheets, towels, etc. All these things brought us closer and strengthened the bonds of friendship.

Traveling helps us in many ways and the mode of travel makes your journey either the best or the worst. So, choose your mode carefully. It is not a big deal for those who always travel and love a train journey. But there are many who don’t like to travel via train because it takes a lot of time. But as per my experience if you have time and are traveling with family or friends then you should choose a train.

Essay on ‘My First Train Journey’ – Essay 3 (400 words)

I went on my first train journey when I was in 2 nd standard. It was my maternal aunt’s wedding and we had to go to Dehradun to attend the same. As the news broke, there was joy and excitement all around. My mother began deciding the dresses she would wear on the wedding and my father started planning our travel. It was decided that we will be travelling by train with few of our relatives. I was super thrilled about the journey as this was the first time I was travelling by train.

Planning the Train Journey

Train journeys are different from road trips. One needs to plan ahead to ensure a smooth travel. After looking at all the trains running on that route, my parents drilled down to the most suitable and convenient option. The tickets were booked days ahead of the trip. Our bags were packed and all the other necessary arrangements were made for the trip.

It was a night journey. We reached the railway station on time, settled ourselves and the train started within few minutes.

Fun on the Way

We greeted our relatives as we settled ourselves for the long journey ahead. We were meeting many of them after months. So, there was a lot to talk about. I sat with my cousins and we planned to have a lot of fun on the way. They had brought few games. We started playing an interesting board game.

After few rounds of the game, my mother called us for dinner. The dinner served in the train was delicious. After having my dinner, I sat by the window. Since it was night there was nothing much to see outside however I enjoyed sitting in the corner hearing the noise of the running train. It was a different experience for me.

As everyone finished the dinner, we decided to play antakshari. All our relatives joined us to play this fun game. We played antakshari for an hour and then it was time to sleep.

The middle berths were opened and soon everyone dozed off. I woke up early the next morning and was delighted to see the view outside. The green fields, the rising sun, and the range of hills that stood at a distance and the huts that came along the way – everything seemed just beautiful. This was the best part of my train journey.

All in all, my first train journey was super exciting and interesting. I loved every bit of it. The company of my cousins made it all the more fun.

Essay on ‘A Memorable Journey by Train’ – Essay 4 (500 words)

I have gone on many train journeys with my family as well as friends. Travelling by train is comfortable and enjoyable. I always prefer train journeys over road trips for the experience they offer. I have made great memories on these trips. While I have enjoyed all my train journeys, my train travel from Delhi to Goa is the closest to my heart.

Journey from Delhi to Goa

I went for a trip to Goa with my classmates when I was in seventh standard. The trip was planned by the school. After much persuasion, my parents agreed to send me on the trip. Most of my friends also got the consent from their parents. We planned to do a lot of fun things on the trip.

Besides, site-seeing and having fun with friends on the trip, I was also excited about the train journey. The train journey from Delhi to Goa was for around one and a half day. This was the longest journey I had ever gone on. I was really looking forward to it.

My parents dropped me to the station. They were a bit anxious as this was the first time I was travelling so far without them. My mother gave me last minute instructions and I nodded obediently as I eagerly awaited the train. We left from Delhi at around 5 in the evening. I sat by the window with one of my friends by my side.

Travelling with Friends

Travelling with friends is always fun. I had been to Jaipur, Nanital and Shimla with my friends. All these trips were planned by our school. We travelled by train on all these trips and had a lot of fun on the way but none of them involved so much travelling. Most of these were overnight journeys. But on our trip to Goa we spent one night and one and a half day in the train.

I kept sitting by the window for the first two-three hours of the journey. I loved the view outside. As it started getting dark, I joined my friends who were playing dumb charades. We kept playing this game until it was time for dinner. After having our dinner, we chatted until late night. We shared our experiences, narrated interesting stories and mimicked our teachers. It was all great fun. I slept comfortably at night and woke up late.

The breakfast was served almost immediately after I woke up. After having the breakfast, I went and stood by the train door which was half opened. The view outside was beautiful. I love nature and I can watch the trees, hills and the water bodies for hours. It soothes and pleases my senses and offers a delightful experience.

I kept standing there for a long time. One of my friends joined me there. We enjoyed the view and spoke about our love for travelling and nature. During the rest of the day, we played games, had food and chatted with each other. We reached Goa at around 11 at night.

This train journey was an awesome experience. I enjoyed it thoroughly and made several beautiful memories on the way.

When I was in class VII, my mother promised me she would send me when I reach class IX because I would be more mature by then. So, last year I reminded her of her promise. Though reluctant, she agreed to send me on my school trip to Jaipur.

She also convinced my father and he gave the written consent along with the deposit for the trip. My joy knew no bounds. When traveling with friends, train journeys are the best. The train trip from Delhi to Jaipur is one of my most memorable train trips. We had all been looking forward to this school trip for a long time. Our trip was full of plans, and we were hoping to have a great time while on it.

The train started within a few minutes after we arrived at the railway station at 6 in the morning. For a better view of the outside, I occupied the window seat. As we walked, we enjoyed the green fields, mud roads, and huts that we saw along the way. While looking outside, I chatted with my best friend.

It was time for breakfast soon. On the train, we had cutlets and bread. Our meal also included hot tomato soup and a plate of bread and cutlets. As soon as we finished breakfast, we all gathered to play antakshari. I enjoy playing antakshari with large groups. It was also fun to have our teachers join us. Our play continued until we reached our destination before we had even realized it had been so long. I had a great time. It was a joyous train ride with my friends by my side.

Train Journey Essay for  3rd,4th,5th Class Students

The train journey between Kalka and Shimla, which runs along this route, is even more interesting than the hill station of Shimla itself. It is mesmerizing to watch the route it takes. If one does not travel on this train on their trip to Shimla, their trip will not be complete. While planning our trip to Shimla, we bought tickets in advance to take part in this much-discussed train journey.

Journey to Shimla by Toy Train

While we were on break last year, we visited Shimla. After traveling by bus to Kalka, we took the toy train from there to Shimla. It appeared like an ordinary train journey with mountains and valleys along the way, but it was actually a very thrilling and thrilling experience. Our journey was filled with nature. As the train went through the mountains, we felt like we were a part of nature and were able to see mountains, valleys, and greenery.

It was a five- to six-hour journey that I thoroughly enjoyed. As the route went through tunnels and over bridges, there was an added experience. On the route, there were more than 100 tunnels and approximately 800 bridges. For the entire journey, I sat by the window.  Additionally, we hopped off the train when it stopped at a station along the way. The train stopped at the small station only for ten minutes.

As well as my parents, I was accompanied by my brother. The trip was as enjoyable for them as it was for me. On the way back, we took the same train.

In fact, this was the best train ride I have ever taken. Nature is my favorite place to be. Because of this, I enjoyed it even more. This is a route that I would like to take again.

Essay on Train Journey for class 6,7,8th Class Students

When I was in my second grade, I took my first train ride. My maternal aunt was getting married in Dehradun, so we had to travel there to attend. Everyone was filled with joy and excitement when the news broke. Mother started picking out the dresses for the wedding, and my father began to plan our trip. We have decided to travel by train with a few of our relatives. It was my first time riding a train, so I was very excited about the experience.

Planning the Train Journey

It is different to travel by train than by car. In order to travel smoothly, one must plan in advance. After studying all of the trains operating on that route, my parents chose the most convenient and suitable method. It took days to book the tickets. We had packed our bags and made all the necessary arrangements for the trip. The journey took place at night. Within minutes, the train started and we reached the station on time.

Fun on the Way

In preparation for our long journey, we welcomed our relatives. Our first meeting with many of them had been months ago. We talked about a lot of things. The two of us talked about fun things to do along the way as we sat in the car. Some of the games they brought were tabletop games. Our group started playing a fun board game.

When my mother called us for dinner a few rounds into the game, we had just finished the game. On the train, we were served a delicious dinner. In the evening, I sat at the window after having dinner. The quiet of the running train fascinated me as it was night and I couldn’t see much outside. For me, it was a unique experience.

During dinner, we played Antakshari. This was a fun game we played with all our relatives. After playing antakshari for an hour, we went to bed.

All of the middle berths were soon open and people fell asleep. When I woke up the following morning, the view outside was delightful. As I drove along, I noticed the green fields, rising sun, and hills that were at a distance, along with huts along the way. I liked this most about my train trip.

All in all, I found my first train trip to be very exciting and interesting. I enjoyed every minute of it. All the more fun was having my cousins along.

Creative book cover with the title 'Book cover for apocalyptic religious fiction book'

Book cover for apocalyptic religious fiction book

Matthew wanted his religious fiction book cover design to have a realistic or impressionistic art style, such as paintings, renderings, photo compositions, etc. He also had a pretty specific scene in mind. He wanted to have the silhouette of an elderly man sitting on a park bench. However, after realising his scene wasn't working as expected, he fully embraced a more artistic and creative interpretation. One of the things I absolutely love about his book is the striking, dramatic discrepancy between the two realities Norman is living in. There's everybody's reality where life goes on normally, and then there's his reality where everything comes to an end. Book readers are usually very drawn to duality because it's intriguing. So what better way to create a more dramatic effect than to somehow depict both realities. That's how I came up with the idea of using the back cover to depict Norman's apocalyptic vision, and the front cover to show the true reality.

Creative book cover with the title 'Design a book cover for a WWII vet memoir'

Design a book cover for a WWII vet memoir

For Kokoda Trial, one important request was for the designer to use two images provided by Rosemary and Mr. Richardson. The first was the photo of a memorial plaque designed by the author himself. The second was a partial map of the Kokoda Track as it was in WWII, and showing Templeton's Crossing. Historical memoirs are amongst my favorite books to design. I love them because they tell the true stories of those people who made a difference. But there's always a challenge when designing a WWII memoir. And that's avoiding to make it look like a WWII fiction book. It really helped that Rosemary provided real-life materials. This way, my focused was on finding a clean layout to tie in all the elements. I avoided the textured, grungy look because those effects are more suited to fiction books. Instead, I created a clean layout with emphasis on the emotional, personal side of the story.

Initially, Sunnie wanted to use photos from her personal library. They depicted how middle school student girls were assigned to polish the floors of the school’s hallway. The scene was a good metaphor, but the photos were dark and low-quality. So, I decided to take a different more creative approach. I gave an original spin to the cover by using the reflection of a Korean female model in both modern and traditional clothes. The top image is that of a woman dressed in a traditional costume while the bottom part is the reversed version of her wearing modern western clothes. In the end, I created an organic flow of the full jacket by using a subtle magnolia branch—the national flower of South Korea. Sunnie wrote a great book about breaking out of customs and traditions. Her book is not only for those familiar with Korean life. It is for anyone interested in a heartfelt true story. I was very happy she was open to a more creative approach than her initial cover suggestion.

Creative book cover with the title 'Cover design for young-adult fantasy book'

Cover design for young-adult fantasy book

Magpies and Magic by Timothy Michael Lewis is aimed at teens and adults who like to read fantasy fiction. Tim's design suggestion was to have a magpie flying towards the reader with a dragon in pursuit. The aim was for the magpie to be the main focus of the entire cover. However, when flying, magpies have very wide wings stretched out. It was going to be hard—if not, impossible—to have a flying magpie fully on the cover without shrinking it considerably. So I came up with the idea of having the magpie sitting on a branch in full close-up. The dragon would be in secondary plane getting ready to attack the magpie. It was a great compromise. And that also made the cover highly visible as an eBook. Color wise, I used strong contrasts and warm hues. Font wise, the fantasy type seemed the best option. The overall mood I went for was action-adventure, fun, and magic.

Creative book cover with the title 'Striking cover design for women political memoir'

Striking cover design for women political memoir

In order to create a cover that was going to be visually striking even in thumbnail view, I needed to convey the idea of activist feminist motherhood with a simple, uncluttered image. However, I also wanted the design concept to be creative and out-of-the-box, something that would raise eyebrows and intrigue. I ended up using simple everyday items that a housewife would instantly recognise—a hand in a kitchen rubber glove holding up a frying pan. Even though the scene is meant to be simple, the message is strong and iconic—a radical housewife. Holding Shannon’s book in my hands, I couldn’t be happier. It’s got that beautiful polished look with witty touches that I usually admire in other book covers. I am so happy Terena and Shannon chose to work with me. I am also extremely proud to be part of a project meant to help home-stay moms—especially that I am one of them!

Cover design for complex book about humor, love, breast cancer, and a gaming girl

For her novel, Single Player, Jaimie didn't want her main female character's face to be visible. Though her book is quirky, the subject matter is quite heavy, dealing with fear and even grief. Clearly, the cover couldn't look cheesy. My design goal was to capture the fun and quirkiness of the story while juxtaposing it with the gravity of the circumstances. To prevent the cover from becoming cluttered, I chose to include the cancer ribbon and the gaming console right into the title. This gave me more space to play with. I took advantage of the entire full jacket and I created the scene I envisioned: a young woman laid on the couch in her room and a cute black lab waiting eagerly to go outside for new adventures.

The Accidentals is a book about three teenagers each with different problems in their lives. Marissa, Jake, and Kaya get tickets to the Echo Music Festival in various ways, and they each hope to use the festival to improve their lives. But when they get there, they recieve a mysterious message and get recruited for a mission. Their mission is to reveal the true identity of a British pop star. The author wanted a simple, yet sophisticated cover to catch the eye of 12 to 16 year olds (primarily girls). The cover needed to be a mixture of the teenage romance novel type and the heist type, spy covers. Having the three teenagers on the cover wasn't necessary. However, it was the best thing to do so that the book would attract the right audience—teenagers. I aimed at keeping it simple, it needed to be clean, and uncluttered.

It is extremely important to me that the cover is legible and readable in a grayscale format and in a small thumbnail, as I am primarily promoting this book on Amazon via Amazon ads. My initial design idea was to include something with a beach, like the 4-hour workweek, to symbolize how people will be able to enjoy working less if they read this book and apply the lessons within. I have a preference for designs like this -- designs that emphasize an enjoyable lifestyle, designs that will convince the reader to read this book based on how it will enhance their life.

Book cover design for chic-lit romance series

To make Skinny Dipping look chick lit, my style approach was illustrative rather than photographic. My goal was to reflect the most important features of Skinny Dipping: sexy, romantic, and fun. Since the book needed to look good in thumbnail view for e-Publishing, I had to think how to use the cover’s real estate the best way possible. My compromise was to make the cover look special and spicy. The element of surprise was the illustration of a beautiful sexy young woman placed inside a heart shaped life ring. That’s how I managed to get the best out of the three main features: sexy (the young woman,) romantic (the heart shaped life ring,) and fun (the position of the woman inside the life ring.) To finish the cover, I made the title highly visible and added subtle ornaments around the title to make it look more feminine.

Creative Book Cover Design Themes to Try in 2022

Creative Book Cover Design Themes to Try

We may aspire to the age-old wisdom of “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but let’s be real. We ALL judge books by their covers—and for good reason. Whether the style is more conventional or more creative, book cover designs tell us as potential readers what to expect from the book.

Through color, typography, and imagery, a book cover immediately signals who the book is for, which genre it belongs to, what themes are involved, and what overall tone it will strike. By getting the book cover design right, you’ll connect with your target readers on an instant emotional level.

In this piece, we’ll cover:

  • 16 inspiring book cover samples by color
  • 9 more book cover ideas by style and theme
  • 8 book cover design trends for 2022
  • A brief history of book cover design
  • Quick steps for creating your own book cover

16 Examples of Well-Chosen Book Cover Colors

Color is where the mood of any graphic design starts. Get inspired by these examples of beautiful designs in all the book cover colors.

Let’s start with a color that’s technically not a color: black . Black book covers often feel serious, weighty, mysterious, formal, or dramatic.

Depending on the other design elements on the book cover, white can feel modern, elegant, minimal , pure, clean, or simple. Explore the meaning of white in more detail .

Yellow feels vibrant, joyful, energetic, and bright . An undeniably bold choice for a book cover, yellow can help any book stand out on crowded shelves (and as e-commerce thumbnails!).

Red is another powerful choice for a book cover, conveying deep gut-level emotions like passion, love, boldness, confidence, and action.

From greenish-blue teals to phantom blues , there’s no doubt that blue is one of the most popular and widely used colors in graphic design—book covers included!

Blue tends to feel trustworthy , traditional, tranquil, and serene.

Fiery, zesty, and creative , orange makes a statement when it comes to book cover art. Certain shades of orange also have a retro feel that hearkens back to the 1960s and 70s.

Purple is a bit of an enigma. Rarely anyone’s favorite color, purple can evoke feelings of mystery, wonder, royalty, and magic . . . or feelings of gloom and discomfort.

Because it’s a less common choice, purple can certainly work wonders for a creative book cover design.

In terms of meaning, green is one of the most diverse colors. Green can symbolize envy, fertility, growth, and evil. It’s just as commonly used for Frankenstein-esque monsters as it is for gorgeous botanicals.

9 Other Cool Book Cover Ideas by Theme

Color is one way to think about your book cover design, but it’s not the only place to start. If you instead have an idea about the overall theme or general design vibe you want to achieve, check out the cool book cover ideas below. . . .

1. Minimalist

Minimalist designs feel light, modern, and elevated—perfect for bringing to life simple book cover design ideas. They’re ideal for a coffee table book or as a trendy decor piece.

2. Maximalist

At the other end of the spectrum, maximalist designs are busy and ornate. Victorian-style lettering and metallic book cover embossing are classic examples.

3. Text Only

Cleverly positioned text—with no imagery at all—can make for a surprisingly creative book cover design.

4. Abstract

Abstract book covers are often used for literary fiction (as opposed to popular genre fiction). These book covers tend to evoke a theme or symbol more than a character, plot point, or setting.

5. Visual Puns

For some types of books, there’s a great opportunity to create a delightful visual pun with the cover, which this book cover sample has done so well.

Photos can be seen on book covers across genres, but some genres tend to use them more, including romance, thriller, mystery, and popular nonfiction.

If you plan to create a book cover with face photos , make sure you choose carefully. (Try browsing Shutterstock’s photo assets for good examples.)

7. Illustrative

Whether digitally or traditionally created, illustrations often make cute book cover ideas for children’s books. Depending on the graphic style, however, illustrations can be used for any genre and any age of reader.

8. Naturescapes

Whether it’s travelogs or literary fiction, naturescapes always make an impression. Choose a stark black and white photo for a dramatic feel, or go with something hand-drawn for a friendlier nature book cover design.

Another surefire design choice for any genre is retro/vintage. The beauty of vintage design is that you have hundreds—even thousands—of years from which to draw inspiration for your book cover.

Vintage could mean classic Americana (like the example below) or something reaching back to Greek antiquity .

8 Book Cover Design Trends for 2022

After 2021’s “ book blob ” or “ unicorn frappuccino ” trend, what can we expect for book covers in 2022? Check out some design trends that you’ll likely see on bookstore shelves.

1. Uneven Typography

Fonts with varying letter forms—especially weight and width—will continue to be popular thanks to their dynamism and interest.

2. Pink, Pink, Pink

Pacific Pink is one of 2022’s top color trends , and book covers will certainly be sharing in the color.

3. Gritty Monochromes

Basically, the polar opposite of Pacific pink is yet another trend for 2022—the rough, dark, black-and-white. These book covers feature heavy texturing and a gritty Guernica feel.

4. Box Sets

Move over, simple covers! Readers are clamoring for fancier packaging that doubles as decor.

5. Lines and Grids

Grids are so fundamental to design that they can hardly be called a trend, but you can expect playful and possibly unexpected takes on grids and lines.

Mixed-media collages can create a surprising, chaotic, and almost uncomfortable vibe for some, but it’s a style that connects with Gen Z and will almost certainly grow in popularity this year.

7. More Inclusive Imagery

Historically, publishers haven’t been known for pushing the boundaries, but the industry is finally catching up to the times with images that celebrate more diversity . Needless to say, there’s a lot more work to be done.

8. Colorful Minimalism

The pairing of two highly-saturated colors may not sound minimal, but current trends in branding and graphic design have shown just how well this approach can work.

A Quick Look at Book Cover Design—Past and Present

Curious how book cover designs have shifted over the centuries? Here’s a very quick look at book cover design through the ages.

The Earliest Books

Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami cover from 1500s

In the days where literacy was reserved for the ruling and religious classes, book covers were grandiose and ornate.

The role of the cover (usually leather, gold , or even ivory ) was to protect the valuable pages inside, to reflect the gravity of the contents, and—perhaps above all—to serve as a status symbol.

Post Industrial Revolution

Several examples of book covers from the 1800s

After steam-powered printing presses made books easier to print, publishers began to experiment with different book cover styles , such as watercolor inlays, gold-stamped fabric, and illustrated tissue paper.

Advances in color printing allowed for even more experimentation, and covers began to take on the role of marketing the book inside.

Several examples of book covers post 1930s

Why the 1930s, you ask? The invention of Penguin paperback books , of course! This new mass market required book covers to be both easy to recognize and easy to reproduce.

Now, book covers began to incorporate contemporaneous graphic design trends and to express a wide variety of styles—some more abstract and artistic, some more expressive, some more “high brow,” and some more mass market.

Contemporary Era

Six examples of modern book covers

With contemporary book covers, there are few hard-and-fast rules. Photos, paintings, abstract shapes, playful typography—everything is game.

The rise of self-publishing has led to another game-changing book cover trend: the DIY design. With tools like Shutterstock Create, self-published authors can create their own book covers without requiring an agent or a publishing house behind them.

The Book Cover Design Process in 5 Steps

Thinking about creating your own book cover? Here’s a quick guide:

1. Examine Your Genre

The covers of bestselling books almost always pull from expected design themes within their genre, whether that’s “the clinch” of steamy romance novels or the darkly silhouetted man of detective thrillers. Completely original isn’t always better.

2. Make a Moodboard

Using the book cover samples above and your own internet research, start collecting book covers you like. Save them to a Pinterest board so that you can compare them and find trends in the styles you like.

3. Understand Color

Color is king for book covers, so spend some time on color theory to choose one that fits your book’s themes and overall aesthetic.

Don’t forget, too, that colors mean different things to different cultures .

4. Experiment

Open Shutterstock Create and start playing around with fonts, colors, and imagery—you’ve got millions of stock assets to choose from! Try layering text on photos for a trendy look or adding hand doodles for a youthful feel.

5. Get Feedback and Repeat

Once you have an initial concept, ask your network for feedback. Then repeat the process above, doing more research and making adjustments until your design is perfect.

With the examples and ideas above, you’re ready to create your own book cover —or to simply enjoy the beauty of a creative book cover design.

20 Creative Book Cover Designs to Inspire Your Next Project

Karla Hesterberg

Updated: July 28, 2017

Published: October 03, 2016

"I want the design to be deeply serious but somehow playful, modern while also  vintage, colorful without having a lot of colors ... "

creative writing cover design

If you're a designer, you've probably received this kind of feedback before. A single piece of work is often expected to be much more than the sum of its parts.

Clients expect their entire backstories and varied influences to come through clearly in a finished design, and it can be challenging to distill so much into a single, visually pleasing product.

Subscribe to HubSpot's Agency newsletter today.

To inspire your next design project, we've compiled a list of 20 beautifully designed books that beg to be judged by their covers.

20 Creative Book Cover Designs

1) annihilation by jeff vandermeer.

Vandermeer's critically-acclaimed science fiction novel centers around Area X, a mysterious, sinister patch of wilderness that seems to be growing to reclaim human territory.

To reflect Area X's unnatural invasion into our world, designer Charlotte Strick  entangled bold typography with a botanical illustration by Eric Nyquist .

The same illustrator/designer duo created similar covers for all three books in the   Southern Reach Trilogy .

2) The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

When Keith Hayes, a veteran art director for Little, Brown and Company, was tasked with designing a cover for Tartt's 2013 novel, the author had just one ask from Hayes.

"Donna's only request for the cover was that I not show the painting," Hayes wrote in mental_floss . The painting in question is Carel Fabritius's 1654 piece, "The Goldfinch," which plays a role in the novel.

Hayes ended up including the painting after all -- although just a peek. Tartt  "ended up loving it, which means a lot to me, because I knew I better not screw that one up,"  Hayes wrote.

3) Thrown by Kerry Howley

Designer Jonathan Gray is no stranger to iconic cover art. He has designed covers for major authors such as David Foster Wallace and Jonathan Safran Foer.

For Howley's 2014 novel about cage fighting, Gray centers the cover design around a minimal shape resembling a fighting ring. It's a subtle, avant-garde way to symbolize the novel's unique topic.

4) When the Doves Disappeared by Sofi Oksanan

This cover from designer Kelly Blair truly conveys a sense of mystery -- the perfect visual representation for Oksanan's moody historical novel set in  Communist-ruled Estonia.

5) 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

Murakami's most ambitious novel deserves an equally ambitious cover, and Chip Kidd , a legendary cover designer for Knopf, definitely delivered.

A layer of cloudy velum masks the subject's face, which is clearly visible only through the title's transparent typography. A hidden panel behind the velum reveals another, less clouded version of the subject's face. The effect is intended to evoke a feeling of two realities -- a theme that runs throughout the novel.

6) Witches of America by Alex Mar

"I wanted a cover that avoided any clichés, and that conveyed that this is a book that deals with witchcraft in the present day, and in a fresh way," said author Alex Marr .

She found exactly what she wanted in this subtle design by Rachel Willey , who refrained from using images of pointy hats and broomsticks in favor of this iconic black raven and modern circle graphics.

7) A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare

Illustrator Manuja Waldia designed this whimsical new cover for Shakespeare's classic comedy. While many other covers for the play feature  paintings or other historical visuals , Walida's approach is decidedly modern. She perfectly captures the tangled romantic relationships at the center of the plot with this simple crest.

Walida's version is part of The Pelican Shakespeare series , a collection of Shakespeare's classic works accompanied by related scholarship and research. She designed the covers for 14 works in the series.

8) The Utopia of Rules by David Graeber

Brooklyn-based graphic designer Christopher Brian King whipped up this topical cover design for anthropologist David Graeber's 2015 exploration of bureaucracy.

The straightforward design resembles a government form. In true bureaucratic style, King even included a section on the bottom right that details the dimensions of the book itself.

9) The Dinner by Herman Koch

Koch's novel  focuses on a family in crisis. After their sons commit a horrible act of violence, they must decide whether or not to turn them in, all over the course of a single lavish dinner.

This clever cover design by Christopher Brand puts the focus on a scorched tablecloth -- the perfect metaphor for the novel's simmering tensions. The burn-marks reveal the title and author's name scrawled out in handwritten lettering.

10) On Such a Full Sea by Chang-Rae Lee

Many dystopian novels opt for flashy covers, but this book jacket by designer Helen Yentus features minimal hand-lettering and a bob hairdo painted with visible ink marks.

The faceless portrait represents the novel's main character, Fan, and the  simple, hand-painted  art complements the novel's serious  tone.

11) The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson

Designer Matt Dorfman created this shocking split-cover for Ronson's nonfiction work on mental health. Equal parts hilarious and horrifying, the  book investigates occurrences of psychopathy in the general population.

The ripped-away cover perfectly represents the unexpected threat of psychopathy looming beneath the surface of our expectations. The left side resembles a classic academic textbook cover, while the right side appears to be torn  away, revealing a bright, snarling jungle cat and chaotic typeface.

12) Art and Truth After Plato by Tom Rockmore

"Modern graphic design" probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "Plato," but this cover by Isaac Tobin might have you rethinking that association .

Tobin uses a vivid, two-tone silhouette of a Plato bust and contrasting lowercase text for the title, giving the ancient philosopher a 21st century makeover.

plato cover

13) Me (The Art of Living) by Mel Thompson

David Drummond designed this decidedly minimal cover for philosopher Mel Thompson's 2014 publication that explores self-reflection and the nature of self.

To represent these themes, a  simple mirror graphic in anchored in the center, reflecting the book's title back at the viewer.

14) Very Recent History by Choire Sicha

There's a lot happening in this cover design for Sicha's novel of interweaving narratives in a single city. Designer Ben Wiseman captures the feeling of multiple lives running parallel in close proximity with his intricate cover illustration.

15) The Colossus of Maroussi by Henry Miller

The Colossus of Maroussi is a 1941 travelogue by American writer Henry Miller, chronicling his time in Greece during World War II. The original cover featured horizontal blue and white stripes across the book jacket: a minimal homage to the Greek flag.

This updated cover by designer Steve Attardo borrows similar elements from the 1941 cover, but takes them up a notch. Where the original used simple stripes, Attardo created a labyrinthine series of white lines over a blue backdrop.

16) A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

It can be a challenge for cover designers to distill the plot of a book into a single p iece of work, but Will Staehle does a superb job of it in this cover he designed for the 2015 novel  A Darker Shade of Magic .

The book follows magicians who can travel between parallel universes in London. Staehle's design features two circular maps of London -- one red and one black -- with a caped figure jumping between them. It's a simple, elegant way to give browsers a peek at the magic tricks contained in the book's pages.

17) The Night Guest by Fiona McFarlane

In McFarlane's debut novel, the protagonist Ruth is haunted by the sounds of a tiger roaming in the distance.

The focal point of this unique cover design by  Charlotte Strick  is the mesmerizing tiger Illustration by Ariana Nehmad Ross . Tree branches twist and contort to form a predatory face, all while a serene figure sleeps in the mouth of the beast.

18) Underground Airlines by Ben Winters

The negative silhouette of an airplane cuts over an anonymous face in this cover design by  Oliver Munday . The effect is contemporary  and dramatic, a perfect fit for this speculative fiction novel.

underground airlines cover

19) Speak by Louisa Hall

This science fiction novel contemplates what it truly means to be human in a world increasingly permeated  by artificial intelligence.

To capture the essence of the book on the cover, designer Jim Tierney used bold, overlapping circles, some containing signs of natural evolution and one marked by the distinctive lines of a motherboard.

speak cover book

20) Marvel and a Wonder by Joe Meno

A failing farm. A boy who can talk to animals. A miracle in the form of a runaway racehorse. Joe Meno's novel is equal parts whimsy and emotional heft, and the cover perfectly captures this.

Designer Jon Resh worked alongside the author to develop this design . There's something distinctly off-kilter about the racehorse illustration running vertically down the center off the cover -- an apt reflection of the book itself.

6 Tips for Writing the Perfect Cover Design Brief

A big part of the what makes self-publishing so attractive is that authors retain all creative freedom over their work, from the final sentence inside the book to the cover image in front of it. If you choose to go that route , that means it is up to you, and you only, to choose your designer and write them a cover design brief to communicate your vision.

As in any other creative business relationship, the briefing process is the most important part of the author-artist collaboration. That puts a lot of pressure on indie authors to put together the perfect book cover design brief — something that succinctly captures the essence of their book, distilling its arcs, themes, and messages into inspiration worthy of an artist.

Luckily, authors scouting for professional cover designers on the Reedsy marketplace get access to a built-in brief, a template that makes filling in your designer as easy as filling out a form. But for those who want to craft their own book cover design briefs from scratch, we’ve asked some of our designers what they need from the authors they work with. Here are their tips for writing the perfect brief — and initiating a fruitful artistic relationship.

1. Know your audience

Your cover design will be your most powerful marketing tool. It will influence your discoverability and help turn curious would-be readers into actual buyers. That's why you have to follow the #1 rule in marketing: know your target market and focus on them.

“Different colors and fonts appeal to different readers. Different genres have different looks that you would want to utilize in your cover. Marketing to everyone is the same thing as marketing to no one. Your cover design should be a marketing tool to find readers who will like your book”. — Ellie Bockert Augsburger

2. Give the designer an idea of your tastes

Of course, this is not a requirement if you want to leave your designer with full creative freedom. But make sure that is really what you want.

If you do want to help steer the creative process, here are 3 simple questions that you should answer in your book cover design brief, according to Lizzie Gardiner :

  • What are the books you would like your book to be placed next to?
  • Which cover designs really speak to you?
  • What are the main elements in the book that could be used on the cover?

Write a good cover design brief for an eye-catching cover like these, by Lizzie Gardiner.

3. Trust in your book designer’s judgment

You are paying good money for professional work, so you should try to benefit as much as possible from the designer’s expertise, creativity and experience. Nuno Moreira , who we previously interviewed on the blog , is adamant about “leaving a cover artist enough free range to come up with their own ideas”.

Other designers, like Marc Ecob , agree. As Mark puts it, “Remember that designers are there to design, and you should respect that. That’s our role, and we wouldn’t tell authors what to write.”

Write a strong cover design brief to get covers like these, by Mark Ecob

4. Distill your book into a few ideas and elements

In an ideal world, every cover designer would read the book they're designing for before they work on it. But time and money constraints often make this impossible, so it's up to you to transmit your book’s essence to the designer. It's a fine balancing act, requiring you to communicate everything that's important without going overboard on the detail.

“It is really helpful if the author can pinpoint important parts in the text”, says Jason Anscomb . “Books cover designs can derive from one sentence or crystallized moment in a book. So the book needs to be boiled down and distilled to its basic elements. The main central theme of the book is what you are searching for. This is what should be represented on the cover.”

Write a strong cover design brief to get covers like these, by Jason Anscomb

5. Set a budget by determining your priorities

This is where price comes in. Indie authors don’t often have the resources to invest in design the way a major publisher would. That’s okay — experienced designers know this. What they will ask, though, is that you be clear with your goals.

As Annie Ericsson puts it, “There’s a classic project management saying that goes, ‘We have three kinds of services: fast, good and cheap. Pick two.’ When arranging the book cover design brief, consider which goals you’d like to prioritize, because one cannot work under all three constraints.

Write a strong cover design brief to get covers like these, by Annie Ericsson

6. Communicate early and often

This might sound obvious, but communication is the best way to speed up the process and make sure you end up with the perfect book cover .

This doesn’t just mean writing a clear brief for your designer. It also means staying in touch, giving feedback on proposed designs, sharing new ideas as they come along and — above all — always saying what you mean. As Dane Low puts it, “Don’t say ‘I’m open, be creative!’ as your only instruction if you are not willing to give the designer free reign over your concept."

Write a strong cover design brief to get covers like these, by Dane Low

If you trust your cover designer, the whole design process will go smoothly. And you want to start communicating that trust from the very beginning of your working relationship — the cover design brief.

  • Cover letter writing tips from career experts

But first, before we dive into the beautiful cover letters…

Why should you use a cover letter template?

In most cases, your cover letter is an employer’s first introduction to who you are — your personality, your qualifications, and your goals. A cover letter is a way to develop your own personal brand :

cover letter template

A professional cover letter helps you seem more legitimate to employers. And it is a great document to bring with you to an interview and to publish on your portfolio site .

Why do you need a cover letter template ? Well, you should be writing a different cover letter for each job application.

So, a cover letter template will give you a framework that you can adapt for different positions, and save you time doing so.

Now, let’s take a look at different types of cover letter templates you can customize using Venngage.

Before that, if your resume design could use a little makeover, take a peek at these easy-to-use infographic resumes or creative resume templates . They’re sure to add that extra flair and make your application stand out!

Here’s a perfect example of a cover letter template you can use when applying for an internship or a co-op position:

Professional Gray Cover Letter Template

If you’re applying for your first job as a student, chances are you won’t have much hands-on work experience. In this case, you can talk about your educational qualifications as well as different skills relevant to the job that you’ve obtained from your course work.

In your cover letter, you can also explain what you bring to the table — what you think is important to the job and will make you stand out from other candidates. Take this template as an example:

internship cover letter template

If you don’t have concrete numbers to back up your work experience, you can talk about what you value and learn from previous experience — as well as what your soft skills are and how they’ll help you in the job you’re applying for.

Add a custom header that illustrates your personal brand

What impression do you want to make on readers of your cover letter? Do you want them to think you’re inventive and take risks? Do you want them to think you’re competent and reliable?

This header uses bright colors and icons to make Sophie seem creative and personable:

Design Pro Tip: Use our icon replace tool to quickly replace any icon in our templates. Click any template here to sign up for free and enter the editor. Then, click an icon to replace it with one of the thousands of icons in our library.

Similar to how you can use an image as a border, you can also create an image header.

When picking an image for your header, look for an image that isn’t too busy. Too much going on will distract from your header text — and the text is the most important part!

For example, this cover letter template uses a tranquil lake scene in the header to show off the applicant’s photography skills:

Creative Photography Cover Letter Template

Or skip the image and separate your header text with a simple line:

cover letter template

Using a bold header is one way to make your job application stand out, so you don’t hear those dreaded words: “we’ll just keep your resume on file .”

You can also use our customizable  letterhead  templates to create unique headers.

Use icons to illustrate information like your experience, skills, or passions

Icons are simplified vector graphics used to represent concepts. They’re perfect for adding a bit of creativity to your cover letter design.

cover letter template

You can use icons in a number of ways to enhance your design, including:

  • Drawing attention to section headers
  • Creating your own custom logo or illustrations
  • Emphasizing key points like your contact information
  • Replacing bullet points in lists
“Using bullets points where applicable also help to make it a smooth read.”

– Brandon Thompson, Recruitment and Hiring Manager at  1-800-Got-Junk?

In this cover letter template, icons are used in the header to add a bit of color and illustrate the applicant’s experience:

Add an atypical border for a modern cover letter design

cover letter template

Generally speaking, it’s good to play it safe with your cover letter design. That being said, there are small design choices you can make that will have a big impact on your cover letter’s personality.

For example, you can use borders in unusual ways. A simple border used in a surprising way can make your cover letter design more interesting.

For example, instead of using a border around the edges of your page, you could use a border around one section, like the header. Take a look at how this cover letter template uses a strip of purple along the spinal column and crosses it with a border around the header:

Modern Graphic Design Cover Letter Template

Use a column layout to divide your cover letter into sections

cover letter template

Typically, when you write a cover letter, you will include your contact information in the header or footer. But a visual cover letter offers you the opportunity to use a different page layout.

For example, you could put your contact information in a spinal column at the side of the page. To do this, simply divide your page into columns:

Cover Letter Templates

Take a look at how columns are used in the page layout for this cover letter template:

cover letter template

Include a personal logo to make your cover letter more memorable

For example, this cover letter template uses a logo created by putting the applicant’s initial inside a triangle. Simple and sleek:

Modern Marketing Cover Letter Template

Creating your own logo might seem like a big task. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Your logo design could be as simple as a writing your name in a specific brand font , or combining your initial with an icon or shape.

Take some time to draft a few mock ups of your logo. What shapes and font style reflect your personality? Which designs are the most eye-catching and easy to use in other places?

You could use a logo in place of the headshot in this template. Or simply, include your photo:

cover letter template

Design Pro Tip : Use our photo replace feature to quickly add your own headshot to your cover letter. The Venngage online drag and drop editor lets you quickly upload your photo and drag it over the existing headshot. The tool will replace and resize for you.

cover letter template

Give your cover letter template a decorative border

This cover letter template uses an image of a map for the border. This could represent the applicant’s career path, their sense of adventure, or the places their experiences have taken them:

Professional Business Cover Letter Template

Design Pro Tip : Create a border using an image in Venngage’s online editor by placing a rectangle over the background image. If you would like your border to be see-through, simply adjust the opacity of the rectangle.

Cover Letter Templates

A border is a simple way to add some creativity to your cover letter, while still maintaining a more traditional design.

An easy and eye-catching approach is to use a background image for your border. Look for an image that reflects your skills, your hobbies or passions, or the industry you’re in or applying for. The meaning of the image can be literal or symbolic — that’s up to you!

Or instead of a border, try adding a footer or sidebar with an image, or in a solid color like this template:

cover letter template

Use up to three different font styles (but no more than that!)

This cover letter template uses an elegant font for the headers and a sans serif font for the body copy (for readability):

cover letter template

Here’s a design rule of thumb: use no more than three different font types in one design. If you use too many different fonts , your design can look cluttered.

Generally, it’s best to stick to:

  • One font for headers
  • One font for sub-headers
  • One font for body text

For example, this cover letter template uses only two fonts: Poppins for the header and sub-headers, and Merriweather for the body text. By bolding certain headers and using a different brand color for other, the design has variation while still being cohesive:

Simple Cover Letter Template

Highlight your contact information using a bold footer

While a bright, bold header will help grab the attention of readers, a footer will help make sure your cover letter ends on an impressive note. A bold footer can also help highlight key information–like your contact information and availability.

Take a look at how the footer in this cover letter template mirrors the color in the header, while also emphasizing the applicant’s contact information:

Blue Entry Level Cover Letter Template

Round out your cover letter design with an image

Look at how seamlessly the image at the bottom of this cover letter is incorporated into the design:

Modern Design Cover Letter Template 1

An image can add that final touch to your cover letter design. You can use an image to fill up empty space and to reinforce themes in your cover letter.

If you want to show off your creative chops, you could include a photo you’ve taken yourself, or a custom illustration. But when in doubt, you could incorporate a stock photo –as long as it isn’t too cheesy.

No matter what the image is, it’s important that you integrate it cohesively into your page design. That could mean using an image frame  to give your image a unique border shape, or using an image with a transparent background.

Add your signature to your cover letter template

Take a look at how this cover letter template incorporates a signature in the footer:

Graphic Designer Cover Letter Template

At this point, you may have noticed something that a lot of these cover letters have in common: they include a signature.

While including a signature isn’t a requirement, it can add another personal touch to your cover letter. Personal design touches will help your cover letter be more memorable.

  • Header and contact information: At the top of your cover letter, include your name, address, phone number and email, as well as the date of your application.
  • Salutation: Begin the letter by addressing the hiring manager by their name if it’s available or use a generic “Dear Hiring Manager” if you don’t know their name.
  • Content: Start with an engaging opening paragraph that clearly mentions the job you’re applying for and how you found out about it. In the following paragraphs, concisely explain why you are a strong candidate for the position, focusing on your skills, qualifications and specific achievements that align with the job requirements. Express your enthusiasm for the role and the company throughout the content.
  • Closing: In the closing paragraph, express your eagerness for an interview and thank the recipient for considering your application. Use a professional closing, such as “Sincerely” or “Best regards.”
  • Proofreading and formatting: Before finalizing, carefully proofread your cover letter to ensure there are no grammar, spelling or punctuation errors. Maintain a clean, professional font and consistent formatting throughout the letter while keeping it to one page in length.
  • Select a cover letter template from this post or from our templates library . You’ll be prompted to create a free account. Some of our templates are free, some require a small fee to use.
  • You’ll enter Venngage’s drag and drop online editor. No design knowledge needed!
  • Add your own text, including a header, description, body text and your contact information.
  • Customize the color scheme , fonts , icons and images to fit your personal brand.

Expert tips for writing your cover letter

While good design will help grab the attention of readers, your text is what will actually sell them on your qualifications.

Before we delve into the expert tips, here are some general tips on how to write the best cover letter for your dream job. Make sure you always provide the reader — in this case, the recruiter, hiring manager or department manager — with context. Did you meet the recruiter at a job fair? Or, did you come across a message from them on a job portal?

If you have already met the recruiter in person at an event, the cover letter serves as a way to get back in touch while also communicating your interest in the position you are applying for.

You may also refer to something that stood out in your previous conversation so that the recruiter can refresh their memory and take a personal interest in your application.

Now, onto the tips from the career experts. Here’s what they had to say on cover letter writing:

Keep your text concise

“Keep your cover letter concise, easy to skim and be sure to connect the dots as to why you meet the important qualifications.”

– Hannah Morgan, Job Search Strategist at CareerSherpa

Cover Letter Templates & Tips1

Customize your cover letter for each company you apply to

“CUSTOMIZE YOUR LETTER TO THE COMPANY YOU’RE SENDING IT TO. Don’t just provide a list of your skills, or a few flattering paragraphs about your background. Tie your story to what the company cares about! If you’re not sure what the company cares about, go to their website. Read their About Us page. Try to figure out what they value (this is not hard – a lot of companies share their core values somewhere on their site). Pick which of those core values resonate most with you. Then, tailor your letter to those values. That is: how have you demonstrated that value in your career so far? How would your experience / skill set contribute to that value if you were to work at this company?”

– Claire Suellentrop, Co-Founder and Head of Marketing at Userlist.io

“Always personalize your cover letter. Explain what you have to offer and how exactly that connects with the vision/goals of the company.”

P.S: Not customizing your cover letter for each job application is probably the biggest cover letter mistake you can make as an applicant!

Cover Letter Templates & Tips2

Focus on communicating your career goals

“Spend more time explaining your goals/direction and your plan rather than listing off things like ‘good at multitasking and team work’. What is your focus and why do you want the role?”

– Emily Brown, Hiring Manager at Ledcor

Cover Letter Templates & Tips3

Use creative copywriting techniques

“When hiring marketers, I look for creativity and powerful copywriting. Empathy…understand the role your prospective employer is hiring for and what good and bad (very important to have why you might not fit) ways you fit in.”

– Derric Haynie, CEO of Vulpine Interactive

Cover Letter Templates & Tips4

Show you know a lot about the company you’re applying for

“Find a way to stand out and find a way to speak to the first person who will be reading your resume, either that’s a recruiter, HR manager or hiring manager. If you know who you’re writing the cover letter for, talk about why you are actually excited to work for that company. Talk more about the company than you do about yourself, and tie in a few reasons why you’e the right fit for the role. Reference recent news articles about the company, show that you’ve done your research, whatever you need to do to stand out beyond the copy and paste approach that everyone else is using. The information is available.”

– Martin Hauck, Head of Talent at  Coinsquare

Cover Letter Templates & Tips5

Optimize your cover letter design for print

You probably already have a few ideas for creative cover letters buzzing around in your head. But before you race off to start your design, here are a few best practices to keep in mind.

If you’re planning on bringing your cover letter to an interview, make sure that your design will look as impressive in print as it does on screen.

Design your cover letter for standard letter paper

Make sure that the size dimensions of your cover letter template fit standard printer paper. Standard letter paper is 8.5 x 11 inches.

Export your cover letter in a high resolution

You don’t want your cover letter to print out blurry. In general, it’s a good idea to export your cover letter in 300 dpi resolution.

Venngage allows you to download your design in HD PNG or PDF formats. You can also check out this guide to learn how to edit PDFs .

Set bleed marks for your printer

If you want to get your cover letter printed professional, you may want to set bleed marks in your design. “Bleed” is the area around the outside of your cover letter that will be chopped off after printing.

If your cover letter design has a solid background color, or colors and images that touch the edge of the page, you should set bleed marks to indicate where the edge of the page is.

Why you need to stop being a book cover design snob

A s an ex-literature student, book cover snobbery is (unfortunately) ingrained in me. There's something about a quasi-historical novel with a shirtless, rippling-abbed man that makes me physically recoil – but I'm here to reform. As creatives, it's natural that we judge a book by its cover, but there comes a point where book snobbery can hold us back from the simple pleasures of reading.

Designing a contemporary book cover can be difficult as trends are constantly cycling in and out of relevance. It seems book covers are getting increasingly formulaic thanks to movie adaptations, minimalist design trends and genre conventions, creating a generic design plague in bookshops across the globe. Some designs are timeless, some are fleeting and some will always be schlocky but without being too sickly, it's what's inside that counts.

What makes a 'good' cover?

I'd argue that the idea of a 'good' book cover is somewhat of a myth. There are obvious examples of beautiful book cover design (think Normal People or Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale) but ultimately a good design fits its brief. The truth is that some literature can be harmed by an overdesigned cover, promising something beyond the words' intentions.

A prime example is the work of Collen Hoover. You've likely seen a copy of 'It Ends With Us' in your local bookshop and maybe you've felt somewhat indifferent to the smashed pink orchids and blocky typography. The tepid palatability of Colleen's novels might be subject to elitist literary backlash, but at its core, it's a cover designed for commercial appeal. And commercially appeal it did, winning the top spot on the Sunday Times bestseller list.

Overcoming the design ick

Venturing outside the comfort zone of beautiful design inherently enriches your reading. Yes, you might not look as cool on the morning commute but you also run the risk of missing out on your next favourite novel. I'll be the first to admit that I sometimes turn my nose up at a book cover with a real person plastered on it or an author name that's double the size of the title, but it's not just new books that are subject to bad design – your classics can fall victim too.

Amidst the plague of endless book-to-movie adaptations, often upcoming features will be subject to the dreaded film/TV adaptation cover. However, I implore you not to be disheartened by a fake sticker that says "coming soon to Netflix" – it's not the black spot of book design. Even classics like Fahrenheit 451 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have been tarnished by 'bad' covers, but that shouldn't be enough to disregard them entirely.

Film adapted Fahrenheit 451 book cover"

Breaking the genre design funk

Curating a collection of stunning literature is undoubtedly rewarding and this isn't me arguing against aesthetically pleasing design. Yet, while there are plenty of beautiful books around, book cover design seems to be in a bit of a funk – isolated into separate factions that rarely stray from their genre design cues.

Fantasy book covers are typically maximalist and ornate, high-brow romance is stylishly graphic and illustrative, and I could probably spot an Ian Rankin crime novel from a mile away. While I don't think these genre design signifiers will die out anytime soon, they trap readers in a genre loop, making book cover design stale and formulaic.

In a way, book cover design snobbery is a result of these rigid genre design features. If you can break away from the design tropes you typically gravitate towards, there's an entire world of genres to discover. From an ex book snob, it's worth thinking twice before you judge a book by its cover.

If you're after more stunning book design, take a look at our interview with children's book illustrator Flavia Z Drago . For more of the classics, take a look at this ingenious Animal Farm book cover with a creepy hidden detail.

More Americans are freelancing — and as demand for independent workers surges, so has the availability of high-paying freelance opportunities.

The number of professionals freelancing in the U.S. hit an all-time high in 2023, increasing to 64 million people, or 38% of the U.S. workforce, from 60 million the year earlier according to recent research from Upwork.

Businesses are increasingly relying on freelancers to save on headcount and real estate expenses, Yoav Hornung, head of verticals and innovation at Fiverr, recently told CNBC Make It .

Many of these project-based jobs can come with six-figure payouts. The number of independent workers making $100,000 or more a year grew by 53% between 2021 and 2023, according to an October 2023 report by MBO Partners, a provider of back-office services to independent workers.

But the services people are hiring independent contractors for are constantly changing. To help freelancers find the best opportunities, Freelancer.com has identified five in-demand freelance jobs , based on more than 250,000 listings posted on its database between January and March 2024. The earnings information comes from this sample of projects.

All of these jobs can be done from home and pay over $100 per hour:

1. Programming

Average hourly rate: $250

2. eCommerce development and management

3. graphic design .

Average hourly rate: $140

4. Transcription

Average hourly rate: $200

5. Creative writing

While coding, programming and other tech specialties have long been sought-after freelance services, demand for e-commerce contractors has "exploded" in recent months, Sebastián Siseles, international vice president at Freelancer.com, tells CNBC Make It .

The global e-commerce market has been steadily growing over the last several years, a trend that was accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic when more companies had to shift to online business models. This has sparked demand for other freelance services related to running an e-commerce site, Siseles points out, including user interface design and copywriting.

If you're interested in freelancing, make sure you understand the timeline of the job you're applying for and how you'll be compensated. Freelance jobs may last for part of a day, a week, a month, a year or even longer — and while some jobs are priced hourly, others might have a fixed project rate.

You can also set yourself apart as a freelancer by creating a digital portfolio of work samples to share with prospective clients. To find out where the jobs are and list your own services, consider creating a profile on Upwork, Freelancer.com, Fiverr, TaskRabbit or a different website advertising freelance jobs.

Essay on My Most Memorable Trip

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Most Memorable Trip in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Most Memorable Trip

Exciting departure.

My most memorable trip was to a wildlife sanctuary. The excitement started with the journey itself. We took a train, and the rhythmic chugging felt like music.

Wildlife Encounter

The sanctuary was a different world. The sight of animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. I saw a deer grazing, a sight I’ll never forget.

Memorable Return

The return journey was equally thrilling. The sanctuary’s beauty stayed with me, making the trip unforgettable. This trip taught me to appreciate nature’s wonders.

250 Words Essay on My Most Memorable Trip

Introduction.

My most memorable trip was an enthralling journey to the heart of the Himalayas, Leh-Ladakh. This trip was not only about the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, but it was a journey that led to self-discovery and understanding the nuances of life.

The Journey

The journey began from Manali, a picturesque town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas. The road to Leh, known as the world’s second highest motorable road, was a mix of treacherous terrains, high altitude passes, and serene landscapes. The journey was challenging, but it was the challenge that made the journey more exciting.

The Destination

Upon reaching Leh, the stark beauty of the barren mountains, the azure blue sky, and the tranquility of the monasteries left me spellbound. The Pangong Lake, a shimmering blue expanse surrounded by snow-capped mountains, was a sight to behold. The simplicity and hospitality of the local Ladakhi people added a unique charm to the trip.

Life Lessons

This trip was not just about sightseeing; it was a journey of self-discovery. The challenges faced during the journey taught me resilience and the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. The serenity of the place helped me introspect and understand the importance of inner peace in the chaos of life.

In conclusion, my trip to Leh-Ladakh was not just a journey to a destination, but a journey into myself. It was a trip that left an indelible imprint on my mind, making it the most memorable one.

500 Words Essay on My Most Memorable Trip

Traveling is a passion that allows us to explore new places, experience diverse cultures, and create unforgettable memories. One such journey that has left an indelible mark on my memory is my trip to the Grand Canyon.

The Grandeur of the Grand Canyon

My trip to the Grand Canyon was a mesmerizing experience that transcended the boundaries of ordinary travel. The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, USA, is a natural wonder that is unparalleled in its grandeur and majesty. It is a geological marvel that has been carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. The sheer size of the canyon, with its depth reaching over a mile and its width extending up to 18 miles, is awe-inspiring.

Preparation and Anticipation

The anticipation before the trip was almost as exciting as the trip itself. The meticulous preparation, researching about the canyon’s geology, the flora and fauna, and the best viewpoints, added to the thrill. The packing was an exercise in prioritizing essentials, keeping in mind the harsh desert climate and the strenuous hikes.

The journey to the Grand Canyon was a feast for the senses. The drive through the arid landscapes of Arizona, with its vast expanses of desert, punctuated by cacti and occasional settlements, was a stark contrast to the urban landscapes I was accustomed to. The changing hues of the desert at sunset, from golden to deep red, was a sight to behold.

First Impressions

My first glimpse of the Grand Canyon was a moment that is etched in my memory. As I stood on the edge of the South Rim, I was struck by the sheer enormity of the canyon. The vast expanse of rugged terrain, with its layers of red and brown rock, stretched as far as the eye could see. The play of light and shadow on the canyon walls created a dynamic landscape that seemed to change with every passing minute.

The Hiking Experience

Hiking down the Bright Angel Trail was a highlight of the trip. The trail, which descends into the canyon, offered breathtaking views at every turn. The challenging hike was a test of endurance, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the Colorado River was worth every drop of sweat.

The trip to the Grand Canyon was more than just a travel experience. It was a journey that offered profound insights into the power and beauty of nature. It was a reminder of our insignificance in the face of such overwhelming natural grandeur. The memories of the trip continue to inspire me, serving as a reminder of the wonders that await us if we venture beyond our comfort zones.

In conclusion, the trip to the Grand Canyon was a memorable journey that left me with a deeper appreciation of nature’s beauty and the joy of exploration. It was a trip that I will always cherish, and it has inspired me to continue my quest for new experiences and adventures.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Long Essay on Journey By Train of 150 Words in English

I remember our train journey to Assam last year during my summer vacations. I waited with my parents at the crowded station for the train to arrive. Soon a big train pulled in to the station around 4 pm, and the station master opened the gates for boarding.

I held onto my dad’s hand tightly till we found our bunks. My parents first stored the luggage and then seated. I grabbed the window seat and held onto my bag full of candies tightly. My sister played with me for a while, but then she got tired.

Since I was not tired because of the excitement, I looked out of the window and saw the train pass through many valleys. It was a moonlit night, and the wind through the window felt good. After a light dinner, I fell asleep. The light rocking of the train makes me very sleepy. We reached our destination the next morning and had a great trip, but the train journey will always remain very memorable.

Essay on My Visit to Murree Valley Pakistan

Murree is a real beauty of Pakistan which is also known as “Queen of Hills”. It looks like a fantasy which grabs the attention of a lot of tourists. Every summer a lot of people from different nations visit it to get rid of the scorching heat of the sun. I didn’t get a chance to visit it before but last summer when I went there, the whole experience of traveling and visiting beautiful places was memorable.

a memorable journey essay class 5

The weather of Murree is always pleasant and cool. Most of the people even get a chance to experience snow falling. There are beautiful shops, restaurants, cafés, and stalls all around. Moreover, you can hear the fusion of western and Pakistani music which makes the whole atmosphere even more attractive. When the light gets dim in the evening, it becomes harder to leave the place or get back to the hotels. Everyone tends to have a secret desire of staying in the hills forever.

The most important and popular part of the Murree is “Mall Road” which I also visited first. It is always crowded as a lot of people come here to have delicious food and buy unique things for their friends, family, and relatives. However, the best time to visit this road is certainly after the evening when the overall view becomes even more splendid. Also, a lot of adventurous people prefer going to Mall road at midnight. So, the tour of Murree is incomplete without going here.

  • Chair Lift & Cable Car

Chair lift and cable car are other most highlighted features of Murree which everyone loves. It can take one from new Murree to Patriata which are at the distance of 7km from each other. The whole area which comes in between these two destinations is covered with dark and huge forests. Every person is charged at least 500 rupees to complete the ride through chair lift or cable car. The rates, however, keep on increasing over time. But it is absolutely worth it as you get to see a lot of beautiful sceneries from the bird’s eye view.

  • Kashmir Point

Kashmir Point is another place in Murree which would leave you surprised. It is covered with fruit and pine trees where you can see a lot of carefree monkeys jumping from one branch or tree to another. There are also many picnic spots as well which you can visit simply by following the other people or asking any native about it. Most of the spots are surrounded by long hills and dark green trees. Moreover, you would see clouds so near to you that they would give the allusion that you can touch them. It completely feels like paradise which would make you want to stay there throughout the year. In a nutshell, Murree is the most beautiful and unforgettable place to visit at least once in your life. I won’t even mind visiting it every year as it is a fantastic place.
