Akhanda review: Nandamuri Balakrishna film is an assault on the senses

Akhanda movie review: watching akhanda in the theatre feels like an exercise in sensory deprivation. the only difference is, instead of feeling relaxed and calm afterwards, you may feel your senses have been deprived for good..

akhanda movie review cinejosh

Akhanda is a sensible and deeply thoughtful movie about how some unscrupulous men exploit people’s religious beliefs for petty gains. When the crimes of these men reach their peak, the universe conspires to bring an aghori from Kashi and the city-dwelling villain face-to-face, so the godman could defeat adharama (wickedness) and establish dharma (righteousness). No, wait. That’s the plot of Bala’s Naan Kadavul while Akhanda has been made by Boyapati Srinu. In that case, how can one possibly make the mistake of using adjectives such as “sensible” and “thoughtful” to describe a film by Boyapati Srinu?

I beg your forgiveness. I must have mixed up the movies as I am still unsettled by the onslaught on my senses. My eardrums are still throbbing after they were subjected to S Thaman’s incessant background score, which could outdo the screams and whistles in a packed movie theatre. Thaman has also seemingly taken ‘inspiration’ from AR Rahman’s iconic opening tune from Chandralekha song (Thiruda Thiruda), to provide a background score for the main villain. And no wonder that tune stood out amid the din of what passed as a score in the film.

During a rainy night, a woman gives birth to twins in what is nothing short of a cosmic event. A godman senses that one of the twins has a higher purpose, and gives him to a saint. The infant is then taken to Kashi and placed inside the sanctum sanctorum of a Shiva temple. And then, we cut to some years later — the number is never actually spelt out. That’s because we are in the world of Boyapati Srinu, where concepts such as time, causality, logic and common sense have no place. In the present day, we meet Murali Krishna (Nandamuri Balakrishna). He is a farmer and he’s on a mission to reform his village, where violence has become a way of life. He uses violence to end violence, applying the same logic as the USA on gun control — who can stop a bad man with a gun? A good man with a bigger gun.

Our good man, however, needs no gun or weapon to stop bad men. He can do just enough damage with his bare hands. He can even outsmart Neo from The Matrix when it comes to dodging bullets. If you think he’s beyond belief, wait till you meet his twin, Akhanda. No weapon has yet been invented by humans that could hurt him. Bullets can’t harm him, axes can’t kill him and even black magic can’t touch him. He is so powerful, no humans can ever defeat him. But, mere mortals don’t get the extent of his powers. They end up going against him, only to get smashed by his non-hulky hands.

While Boyapati talks about some real issues in the movie, like unchecked mining, irresponsible disposal of chemical waste, fake godmen, and meaninglessness of violence, it is all grandstanding. It may look like that the film is pro-progress and pro-rationality, but his characters’ actions are anything but. He has also irresponsibly used spirituality to provide a moral justification for his character, who keeps slaughtering people with impunity. It’s alright. You see, Akhanda is a good man with a lethal weapon.

Akhanda Movie Review: Balayya's film is a battle between people who have the loudest roar

Director boyapati sreenu's akhanda is no different from his previous outings. bodies fly everywhere, balayya mouths rousing dialogues and bashes up goons in this commercial entertainer..

Akhanda Movie Review: Balayya's film is a battle between people who have the loudest roar

Director Boyapati Sreenu has created his brand of cinema and they are films that require you to keep your brains at home. At this rate, even this statement sounds clichéd, right? That's how Boyapati Sreenu films are. There are two rules in his brand of cinema.

Rule No 1: Do not expect logic. The concept of time and gravity doesn't exist in his universe.

Rule No 2: You will still hear people roaring even after you step out of the cinema hall.

Now, let's get into Akhanda's story. During a rainy night, a woman gives birth to twins. A godman (Jagapathi Babu) senses that one of the twins has a duty to perform and gives him to a saint, who takes him to Kasi. He grows up to be Akhanda (Nandamuri Balakrishna AKA Balyya), a godman who cannot be touched by anybody or anything. In Boyapati's universe, anything means bullets, axes, knives and other weapons.

The other kid named Murali Krishna is a farmer who uses his money to help people. Saranya (Pragya Jaiswal) becomes the collector of the district, who falls in love with Murali Krishna. In a span of five minutes, over a song, they get married and have a kid.

Meanwhile, there's Varadarajulu (Srikanth), who, with the help of Gajendra (Niitin Mehta), are involved in illegal uranium extraction.

How the two Balayyas meet and fight for the good forms the crux of the story.

Sounds too much? No, not in Boyapati's universe. The character arc of Murali Krishna at first takes you by surprise. He doesn't believe in violence. But soon, you get a huge slap on your face for having high hopes. He uses violence to put the bad guys in place. Since he's a good man, a little violence can be exempted.

Like every Boyapati film, Akhanda has bodies flying everywhere, the hero bashing the goons left, right and centre and the heroines sidelined to cry and hype up the hero. In Akhanda, more than the supporting characters, it is the assistant directors and the technicians who would have had to work hard. The overuse of blowers and the smoke machine, tell us that.

This is Balayya's show all the way - especially the Akhanda version. In fact, even Murali Krishna takes a backseat when Akhanda comes on screen. From mouthing powerful and meaningful dialogues to teaching the villains the right lesson, he does everything with so much ease. But, do not ask how Akhanda came to Murali Krishna's village in such a short time. Remember rule No 1?

Akhanda is also a battle between people who have the loudest roar. The villains shout at a certain decibel level. And the hero overpowers. So much so that you hear them even after you've stepped out of the theatre.

Akhanda had a solid story underneath all the mass vehicle moments. But, in an attempt to glorify the hero, the story gets sidelined. While Pragya Jaiswal oversells her performance, other actors did deliver a decent performance.

Akhanda is a film that is strictly for Balayya fans. There are several moments that will make you cheer for him. But, that is it.

2 out of 5 stars for Akhanda.

Akhanda Movie Review: Balakrishna punches the goons, this film punches the audience

Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).

Akhanda is a true-blue Boyapati Sreenu film. This is neither a criticism nor an appreciation; I’m merely stating a fact. Ever since his debut with Bhadra , Boyapati has refused to evolve as a storyteller. What has changed, though, is the way his barbaric villains mercilessly murder dozens of junior artists. With Akhanda, Boyapati has reached a new high in savagery: A hospital where sick children are being treated explodes, a truck runs over dozens of poor men, some more men are set on fire, an entire community of labourers is gunned down. Well, what’s so surprising, you may ask. There have been several gory sequences involving mass murders in the director’s filmography. Legend, for instance, had a scene where four dozen fishermen are stabbed and diced; an equal number of background artists are killed in Sarrainodu, Simha, Vinaya Vidheya Rama , so on and so forth. In Akhanda , though, all the sequences of sadism play out in a span of 10 minutes. There’s no stopping an uncaged Boyapati Sreenu in Akhanda .

His conviction to execute the most insane of his ideas is a lesson for future filmmakers. Picture this: hundreds of goons equipped with all the weaponry from Telugu Masala Film’s godown — from machine guns to axes and even chilli powder — have to kill Balakrishna’s Akhanda Sikandar Rudra Agora (that’s his name), who is in the middle of a prayer devoting his undivided attention. Yet they miserably fail and how! That’s what I call conviction. That’s what I call taking the audience for granted. If the callousness towards the audience’s intellect and the recklessness towards storytelling wasn't outrageous enough, Thaman's loud... I mean, LOUD score is the trishulam to our ears. But, why am I questioning the decibel levels in a Boyapati film?

In between the bloody, gravity-defying fights, there is a semblance of a story. One fine day an extremist named Gajendra kills a faithful guru and takes his spot as a godman to conjure the world. The same day a couple in Rayalaseema is blessed with twins. On the same fine day Jagapathi Babu, who plays a sadhu, warns the father to let go of one of the kids because one of the infants would be destruction personified, while the other is the personification of nature. Usually, this means one of the twins is timid while the other is the wild type. But here both of them are equally violent with innovative methods to decimate their opponents. So why even estrange them? Again, why am I questioning logic in a Boyapati film?

It’s almost impossible to objectively analyse a film like Akhanda , considering how mind-numbingly dumb it is. But what can you do if that’s the film the filmmaker wanted to make. While Boyapati succeeds in what he sets out to do, the ultimate loser is of course... us. Of course, we signed up knowing the film will be loud, crass, violent, and more importantly, senseless. What surprised me, however, is the level of all these attributes. The villains in Boyapati films are cruel, and in Akhanda , it is the turn of Varadharajulu (played by Meka Srikanth, who made a career out of playing soft and kind roles) to do the needful. There is no dearth of crudeness, but here,  they really start bothering you after a point: a mother is raped in front of her child and I see no point for such a sequence to exist. I think it’s shameful that filmmakers in 2021 keep using rape as a device to "infuriate" the hero. What’s funnier is the fact that Srikanth is not even given the "main villain" status. Again, why am I even questioning the writing choices in a Boyapati film?

If there’s one thing Boyapati has learned from the failure of his previous outing, the subdued superhero film Vinaya Vidheya Rama , it’s that you never play it subtle. In Akhanda , Boyapati makes his hero a proper superhero, err, God, this time. In a scene where Akhanda Sikandar Rudra Agora hits a guy, we see a goon’s soul exiting the body and as he falls back, the soul and body meet. Likewise, he can touch a human and see their past. I wish Boyapati explored this angle deeper, it could have been a fitting answer to Unbreakable. We have a heroine as well, played by Pragya Jaiswal, and in tradition with Boyapati-isms, she is hailed as an “inspiration” for the young women, and then this is immediately followed by a crude scene involving a seatbelt. Perhaps the only character who gets a proper arc is a local goon who is reformed by Muralikrishna early in the film. Again, why am I trying to analyse the craft of a Boyapati film?

There’s a funny dialogue in the film. “You punish the evildoer by confining him in a cell, I punish by sending him to hell,” Akhanda Sikanda Rudra Agora fiercely says. Boyapati's Akhanda takes it too seriously.

What’s it about?

Twins separated at birth grow up in two different regions. One of them becomes a righteous landlord Muralikrishna (Balakrishna) in Ananthapuram. The other is raised as Akhanda (Balakrishna) by Sadhus in Benaras.

Murali Krishna builds hospitals and schools in his region. People love him. In Karnataka, an evil person kills a mathadipathi and takes over his place. He appoints Varadarajulu (Srikanth) to run a mining company in Rayalaseema.

Newly appointed collector Sarwani (Pragya Jaiswal) and the state’s secretary for the environment (Poorna) suspect that Varadarajulu’s company is mining Uranium on the pretext of copper. On the other hand, Sarwani quickly falls in love with Muralikrishna and gets married to him.

Meanwhile, an incident puts Muralikrishna in big trouble, and Sarwani gets suspended. When Sarwani’s daughter is in danger, Akhanda (Balakrishna) appears to save her and protect the region from the mining mafia.

‘Akhanda’, the third outing in the combination of Balakrishna and Boyapati, begins without much fuss and gets straight to the main point. It is a simple story. Frankly, the story is rehashed version of Boyapati’s hit movies, closer to ‘Legend’.

The first half is passable with the romantic track between Balakrishna and Pragya Jaiswal, and some fights. It is more of an exercise for the arrival of the titular character – Akhanda. When hope dies, when evil spreads its wings, Akhanda arrives!

Once Akhanda enters the scene, the drama seems to be heading for a joyful ride, with Balakrishna in his massy ‘sadhu’ avatar mouths powerful dialogues. The initial portions in the second half are riveting. The look of Akhanda and the performance steal the show. However, the novelty and grip peter down quickly as Boyapati peppers the narrative with beaten-to-death mass elements that we have already seen in his previous works.

The predictability of the narrative kills the interest.

Akhanda is a mighty force with divine powers on his side, but the villains look too weak. With no strong opposition, Akhanda’s superhero character turns bland as well. Yes, there are some superbly choreographed fights. But they turn repetitive. After a point we feel, why is Akhanda still fighting, when he can easily smash them with one fist. Moreover, one scene after the other becomes an ‘elevation of heroism’.

The best part of the film is the design of Akhanda’s getup and Balakrishna’s performance in the role. The disappointment is that beyond these two aspects, it offers nothing. The film neither has entertainment nor romance. Like always, Boyapati has not cared about the logic part. The NIA investigation and Poorna’s role are examples.

Luckily to Balakrishna’s die-hard fans, there are moments for them to enjoy. There are dialogues like “Oka Maata Nuvvante Shabdam, Ade Maata Nenu Ante Saashanam”, “Samasya Vaste Dandam Pedutaru…Memu Aa Samasyake Pindam Pedutam…Both are not same” provide them opportunity to clap.

Coming to performances, Balakrishna excels as Akhanda. It is one of his best mass characters and he seems to have enjoyed playing it. The film is entirely his show. Balakrishna roars like a lion.

Boyapati presents his heroines as MLAs (Catherine Tresa in Sarrainodu) and IAS officers (Pragya Jaiswal is a collector and Poorna as a principal secretary) but reduces them to play regular heroine roles after a couple of scenes. Srikanth gets the look right for a villain but he is not effective as Jagapathi Babu looked in ‘Legend’.

Among Thaman’s numbers, ‘Jai Balayya’ works but it is his background score that stands out. Thaman has come up with one of his best background scores. His work has elevated many sequences in the second half. Ramprasad’s camerawork is noteworthy.

Bottom-line:  : Director Boyapati’s ‘Akhanda’ is out an out mass film that is aimed at Balakrishna’s hardcore fans. Balakrishna roars in the role of Akhanda which would appeal to the fans but the film runs predictably with lengthy action stunts, with unnecessary dialogues. The beaten-to-death narrative is another issue.

Akhanda movie review: For better or worse, this is everything you expect from a Nandamuri Balakrishna-Boyapati Srinu film

Akhanda is a film where a human bone breaks and it makes the sound of a plastic bottle being crushed. Everything is deliberately loud and glib.

Akhanda movie review: For better or worse, this is everything you expect from a Nandamuri Balakrishna-Boyapati Srinu film

Language: Telugu

For most of us, one Bala Krishna is more than enough. Not for Boyapati Srinu, though. It has been that way with all the three films they’ve collaborated on. It’s either that his screen presence is way too potent to fit into a single character, or he is half as charismatic as he used to be, so the viewer needs two of them to not notice the difference. In  Akhanda , too, he creates two characters for the actor. But he abandons one, Murali Krishna (Bala Krishna), as soon as the character is done laying the path for the entrance of Akandha (Bala Krishna) , an  aghora , who is the heir-apparent of Lord Shiva.

It is interesting to see a film that uses twins this way; one character as an exposition device and the other as resolution. What about the 2nd act, the central conceit, you might ask. Well, the lack of conceit or the repetitiveness of it is the film’s conflict–the second Bala Krishna enters and looks the same way he does in  Legend . Can we watch the same film again and again, with a few changed parameters? Can a head-splitting BGM distract the viewer from the fact that the film’s second half is just a lengthy fight sequence? Watch the film to find out.

Inside a palatial home in Anantapur, a woman is sleeping after giving birth to twin boys. The father takes them to a swami (Jagapathi Babu) to seek his blessings. The swami is pleased by one of them and calls the other  pralayam  (destruction). When asked by the father to get rid of the child, he puts him in an alms bag of another swami, who is going to Varanasi. The child who isn’t abandoned grows up to be Murali Krishna, who is all things good. He wants to eradicate factionalism, violence against women, and save the planet from misuse–Telugu cinema hero’s trivial trifecta. He is soon stopped from living his best life, as bad people are aplenty in the cinematic world of Boyapati.

When the film is all but ending, an investigative officer from New Delhi asks Akhanda, ‘Meru maala manishi kaadha?’ (Aren’t you a human, like us?) ‘Never’, Bala Krishna replies in his signature manner. That made me laugh, but to everyone else chanting ‘Jai Balayya’ it was a rousing moment. You can never tell with a Bala Krishna performance; whether you are supposed to be moved by it or laugh at it. Having said that, he is great as this god-like man who is killing people left and right, bad CGI be damned. M. Rathnam’s dialogues are appropriately over-the-top and fun too. Pragya Jaiswal plays Saranya, an IAS officer, who is enamored by Murali Krishna and later marries him. She is relatively well-written and Pragya carries her well. Do we see her do collector-y things? Don’t be ridiculously greedy. Of course, we don’t.

If Boyapati can be seen through the lens of an auteur, reckless violence would be his trademark. Srikanth plays a businessman who likes the feel of warm blood between his fingers. He is appropriately towering and scary to look at, but the effect wears off. The film spends so much time elevating a godman, Gajendra, but, in the later parts of the film, he looks clueless. In any other film, the hero’s eventual loss of invincibility and possible death is what keeps things interesting for the viewer. But  Akandha ’s titular character is a man who cannot be destroyed. So, the viewer develops a robotic detachment with the proceedings knowing well that the hero will come out of it unharmed. Commerical or otherwise, it is just bad cinema.

The film begins with a military operation. When an officer finds the man they are looking for and calls it in. Instead of acting on the information, the commander starts telling the officer who this man is and why he must be caught. Meanwhile, the criminal kills them all and escapes. As far as exposition goes, that’s a very bad start. One doesn’t go into a film like this expecting technical prowess. Even so, I was taken aback by the clumsy writing. The women in the film are just there to justify the hero’s violence. First, they put her through unspeakable horror, and use that as an occasion for brutal heroism. You can’t even complain because that is, apparently, empowerment. No one quite abuses consequentialism the way a commercial filmmaker does. Not to forget the herds of people killed for the sake of an emotional punchline that never quite hits you where it is supposed to.

In this world, a seatbelt can be used to give a message while also being a sexy thing that segues into a song. A world of possibilities where time and space are mere suggestions. A man who is supposed to be in Kasi will appear in time to help someone in Ananthapur. Bala Krishna will stand in the foreground, complimenting someone in the background, and even if he points his finger in the opposite direction of where the man is, the viewer will understand who he is talking about. No one in the film is named Balayya, but the film will have a song titled ‘Jai Balayya’ because who is stopping them?

The film released in theatres on 2 December 2021.

Rating: 1.5

akhanda movie review cinejosh

akhanda movie review cinejosh

Nandamuri Balakrishna and Pragya Jaiswal played the lead roles in the new Telugu film Akhanda. Boyapati Srinu is the film's director. The film is bankrolled by Dwaraka Creations. The film's review is out. Check it out.

Murali Krishna (Balakrishna) lives in Ananthapur and he enjoys a good name. Murali Krishna locks horns with Varadarajulu (Srikanth) and it creates a lot of issues. As things become complicated for Murali Krishna, then enters Akhanda (Balakrishna). Who is Akhanda? What is his connection with Murali Krishna? What happens in the end? Forms the film's story.

Performances:

Akhanda is Balakrishna's one-man show yet again. Balakrishna is known for delivering powerful performances single-handedly and he has done it with an ace in this film too. Be it dialogue delivery or fights, Balayya has done everything exceptionally. His screen presence is vibrant. The fans will enjoy him on the screen. Pragya Jaiswal gets a meaty role in the film and she is just a commercial cinema heroine. Kalakeya Prabhakar's role is good and Srikanth too stunned everyone in a negative role. Jagapathi Babu is also good in his role. The rest of the cast is impressive.

Technical Aspects:

Thaman stands out as the best in the technical department. He has given his best for the movie and people will praise his work for a long time in the coming days. The camera work is very good in the film. The visuals in the second half, involving the track of Balakrishna as Akhanda are extremely good. The editing is good. The fight sequences are composed nicely in the film. The production design is excellent. More than the audio album, the BGM will become the talking point of the film. The production values are lavish. The technical team has done a fine job in generating the best output.

Balakrishna and Boyapati earlier teamed up for the films Simha and Legend. Living up to the expectations, Akhanda also showers a mass treat on the fans. The film is impressive in the way it was made. Boyapati rightly used Balakrishna and has shown two different variations in him. Fully loaded with mass elements, the film is a big feast for the fans. However, the story is not anything new or fresh. With a predictable plot, Boayapti designed an average screenplay. Still, he put efforts into showcasing Balakrishna differently and made it the USP of the film. Although the film is not up to the mark with regards to content, the film will surely entertain mass audiences and those who are always ready for a mass potboiler. A must-watch for Balakrishna's fans but a one-time watch for normal moviegoers. Bham Akhanda!

One is a do-gooder with super-human skills to bash people but just a little bit of vulnerability to shake his leg to fill the first half with songs and dance along with massy fights. There's a gruesome villain doing an illegal activity and is probably an extreme version of some real life political opponent of Balakrishna, the politician.

  6. Akhanda review: Nandamuri Balakrishna film is an assault on the senses

Akhanda is a sensible and deeply thoughtful movie about how some unscrupulous men exploit people's religious beliefs for petty gains. When the crimes of these men reach their peak, the universe conspires to bring an aghori from Kashi and the city-dwelling villain face-to-face, so the godman could defeat adharama (wickedness) and establish dharma (righteousness).

  8. Akhanda Movie Review: Balayya's film is a battle between people who

  9. Akhanda Movie Review: Balakrishna punches the goons, Boyapati Sreenu

Rating: ( 1.5 / 5) Akhanda is a true-blue Boyapati Sreenu film. This is neither a criticism nor an appreciation; I'm merely stating a fact. Ever since his debut with Bhadra, Boyapati has refused to evolve as a storyteller. What has changed, though, is the way his barbaric villains mercilessly murder dozens of junior artists.

  10. Akhanda Review: Strictly for mass audiences!

Bottom-line: : Director Boyapati's 'Akhanda' is out an out mass film that is aimed at Balakrishna's hardcore fans. Balakrishna roars in the role of Akhanda which would appeal to the fans but the film runs predictably with lengthy action stunts, with unnecessary dialogues. The beaten-to-death narrative is another issue.

Language: Telugu. For most of us, one Bala Krishna is more than enough. Not for Boyapati Srinu, though. It has been that way with all the three films they've collaborated on. It's either that his screen presence is way too potent to fit into a single character, or he is half as charismatic as he used to be, so the viewer needs two of them to not notice the difference.

  13. 'Akhanda' Movie Review: Routine Roars In High Volume

'Akhanda' also shows two different shades of Balakrishna. He once again comes up with a riveting performance in the role of Akhanda. His getup is terrific.
