Resume Writing Tips

What your resume should look like in 2023 (with examples & templates).

Learning what your resume should look like in 2023 isn’t just a matter of aesthetics.

Hiring data shows there’s an average of 200 applicants per job opening. Some researchers say that figure may be closer to 500 candidates , depending on the position.

I share these figures not to scare you, but to highlight your stiff competition.

Your resume is your best chance to make a powerful first impression on hiring teams and recruiters. These decision-makers are inundated with well-qualified applicants as soon as they post a job.

And to make matters worse, eye-tracking studies reveal they only spend 7.4 seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to read it in its entirety or move on to the next one.

That’s not a lot of time to capture and excite readers about your value.

So in this post, I’ll highlight exactly what your resume should look like in 2023 to stand out, engage readers, and boost your chances of landing an interview.

Resume Writing Tips 2023

What Your Resume Should Look Like In 2023: 5 Must-Haves + Examples

An attractive, high-performing resume immediately piques a reader’s interest. It subtly draws them down the page to learn why you’re the candidate they’re looking for.

So every resume in 2023 should incorporate these five elements to achieve that goal:

1. An Updated, Modern Design

A traditional resume format (think: chronological order, bullet points, etc.) won’t give you a leg-up on your competition in 2023. Using one may even hold you back.

See, hiring managers tune out when one of those stale resume templates lands on their desks for the umpteenth time. These boring resumes don’t excite or connect with readers. So your resume could be passed over in that brief 7.4-second scan before it’s even read.

That’s why it’s so important to freshen up the look of your resume with an updated, modern resume template like this one:

Want to use this resume template? Click this link purchase it and start customizing this template (or any others in this article) now.

Unlike a traditional resume template, the one above builds a personal connection with readers by introducing and showcasing your value first. A quick scan of the top half provides them with a snapshot of your areas of expertise and core competencies, two very attractive “hooks” to hiring teams.

Readers will then feel compelled to learn where you honed those skills. So the bottom half of this resume template helps organize your career achievements in an engaging, eye-appealing way.

Rather than reading like a bland job description, each point should back up your skill set while proving your track record of success.

Anyone reading your resume formatted with a modern template like this will know precisely who you are and the value you’ll deliver, which is the ultimate goal.

2. Clear Sections To Highlight Your Best Features

Resumes that look like one giant block of text are intimidating. They tell hiring teams they’ll need to spend time and effort to mine for the intel they’re looking for. And with hundreds of other resumes vying for their attention, they’ll probably just pass on doing so.

That’s why most modern resume templates are divided into sections with clear, distinct headers. This makes your resume easier to scan and read, not to mention far more enjoyable for busy hiring managers.

The resume template above does a fantastic job of breaking up a resume into bite-sized chunks of information. The example below takes this concept a step further:

best resume format for 2023

The highlights and expertise section in this resume template sits in a blue box to draw the reader’s eyes and attention. This is like telling hiring teams, “Hey! Come check this out!”

So think of your resume as a cheat sheet for hiring managers and recruiters rather than a dossier.

Your resume headings and sections will create an organized outline of your qualifications. Then these call-out boxes can be used to show off your best features, as they’re likely one of the first things hiring managers will notice during their initial scan.

3. Strategically-Placed White Space and Tight Copy

Often times, candidates are so focused on adding every little detail to their resume that it becomes too crammed to read. Headings and call-out boxes can help with this problem. But nothing works quite as well as more white space.

White space, or the places in your resume without words or formatting, adds breathing room to your resume . It prevents a resume from appearing jam-packed and hard to read.

A resume with well-defined sections naturally creates more white space, like this resume template :

best resume format for 2023

Aim for short copy to add more white space to your resume . Break up any big chunks of text to make reading less overwhelming and easier for the eyes.

Your resume is like a garden. You don’t want wordy sentences hiding your highlights and achievements like weeds overrunning a beautiful flower bed.

Prune your copy, and you’ll easily add more white space to your resume and draw attention to your best selling points simultaneously.

4. A Bold Pop of Color

If you really want to stand out and catch someone’s attention, a pop of bold color on your resume is a must. But this doesn’t mean you should haphazardly throw a rainbow of color wherever you want.

When done strategically, as this example does, color can be used to add emphasis, contrast, and personality. It can also help break up the sea of black text on your resume.

best resume format for 2023

Want to use this resume template? Click this link to customize this template or any others in this article now .

Though a pop of color can help your resume stand out and make a memorable first impression, colors that are too bright or off-putting will do so for the wrong reasons. Opt for deeper, saturated shades, so your resume will be legible in person and on-screen.

5. A Clear, Easy-to-Read Font and Formatting

It’s essential to think about the font you choose for your resume .

Anything “cutesy” will likely be regarded as unprofessional. Likewise, a font that’s too light or too bold may also be difficult to read.

The best fonts to use on a resume include Serif and Sans Serif fonts, such as Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, and Arial.

As for the font size, stick to 10-14 points (10-12 for regular text and 12-14 for headings and subheadings).

This template offers a great example of resume text formatting:

On a similar note, be sure to emphasize the right areas, not everything . Only use bold or italics to draw attention to your top achievements, companies you’ve worked for, and other notable points according to the role.

What Is a Resume Format and Why Do you Need It?

There is a lot of confusion with the word "Resume Format". Some use it to demonstrate the design elements, and some use it to identify the resume structure.

However, in a basic sense, a resume format is the type of structure your resume follows to present your skills and experience according to individual requirements.

A cluttered resume with no discernible hierarchy is difficult to understand by the writers. That's why it is crucial to have a clear structure in your resume to catch the recruiter's attention based on your work history.

For example, candidates with a career gap would want to focus more on transferable skills than work history. So, a resume structure will be different from a candidate's resume with a consistent career trajectory.

Worse, being unable to use resume formatting effectively also shows that you may lack the skills necessary for the job or are not enthusiastic about the job you're applying for.

What Are the 3 Types of Resume Formats?

There are 3 types of resume formats that work in the job industry:

  • Reverse Chronological Resume Format : This is the most commonly used resume format. That means you mention your most recent work experience on top of the professional experience section and mention the rest of your experiences in reverse chronological order.
  • Functional Resume Format: It focuses more on the candidate's skills than years of experience
  • Combination Resume format : This is a mix of both the above formats. This focuses on both experience and skills of the candidate

In this guide, you'll learn about all the resume formats and how to pick the right one for you.

Reverse Chronological Resume Format

A reverse chronological resume format is a great way to showcase your most recent work experience without losing sight of your earlier achievements.

This format begins with mentioning your most recent work experience followed by all your relevant experiences in reverse chronological order.

You don't need to include everything you've done, but pay attention to gaps in your resume as in a reverse-chronological resume there's no way to hide career gaps.

Not only the professional experience section but all sections of your resume should follow the reverse-chronological format. For example, if you have a master's degree, it will go above the bachelor's degree since it's the most recent degree you've got.

To make it clearer, let's look at a sample reverse chronological resume format:

reverse_chronological_resume_format-1

Sections you should include in a Reverse Chronological Resume:

  • Contact Information : It consists of name, phone number, email, residential location, LinkedIn profile link, GitHub profile link, or any other relevant links you have such as personal website, blog, Behance portfolio, etc.
  • Title: It holds the job title you're applying for or your current designation. And it will go right below your name in the resume header.
  • Professional Summary : A brief 2-3 lines summary of your work experience skills to demonstrate your suitability for the role
  • Key Skills: This section should include the skills relevant to the job you're applying for
  • Professional Experience: Your entire work experience, including internships and training in reverse-chronological order.
  • Education: You have to add education details in reverse-chronological order.
  • Additional Sections : Here, you can add additional sections, such as Volunteer experience , projects, leadership experiences, publications, etc.

Pros of Reverse Chronological Resume Format

Following are some advantages of a reverse chronological resume format:

1. ATS-Friendly

The reverse chronological resume format is the industry standard for resumes and is extremely ATS-friendly. This means that by using this format, you're guaranteed that all the information on your resume will be correctly parsed by almost any Applicant Tracking System.

2. Recruiter-Friendly

Being the most widely used resume format in the industry, it is regarded as the best resume format. You can be sure that every recruiter will recognize the reverse chronological resume format, thus allowing them to quickly scan your entire profile for relevant information.

3. Coherent and Easy to Create

When it comes to making your resume in this format, the process is pretty simple. You simply have to create a timeline of significant events in your career and expand upon them in your resume.

4. Additional Weight to Your Most Recent Work Experience

The emphasis in a reverse chronological resume format is laid upon your most recent experience, followed by the ones before it, and so on. This allows you to highlight your achievements at the peak of your career, which is now!

This enables you to prove your current worth to your potential employer.

Cons of a Reverse Chronological Resume Format

Despite all the pros, the reverse chronological format is not for everyone. If you do not have a consistent professional history, you might want to look at these cons:

1. Doesn't Cover Gaps in Career

If you have significant gaps in your professional career, the reverse-chronological format will expose them to the recruiter. Because of the emphasis on dates, the ATS may also deem you unfit for the position, if you lack relevant work experience.

2. Looks Bad for Frequent Job Switchers

If you've switched jobs a lot in a relatively short period of time, many companies will be listed on your reverse chronological resume. This signals to the employers that you might not stick with their company either.

3. It Doesn't Take Relevancy Into Account

Even if one older work experience is more relevant to your target profile, it will still be placed lower in the "PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE" section.

However, this drawback is properly addressed in functional and combination, where you can group and place relevant skills and achievements on top regardless of where they fell in your trajectory.

Functional Resume Format

The functional resume format is diametrically opposite to the reverse-chronological format. It focuses more on the candidate's skills rather than work experience.

The skills section is divided into multiple categories of sub-skills in the functional resume, and bullet points are added under each skill to showcase proficiency and work experience.

Sections to Include in Functional Resume Format:

  • Resume Header
  • Contact Information
  • Resume Summary
  • Professional Titles
  • Summary of Skills Section
  • Additional Experience

The Summary of Skills is the significant differentiator between a reverse-chronological resume and a functional resume.

This section creates sub-headings and adds experiences/points/instances to further substantiate those skills. The objective of the summary of Skills is to focus on your skills rather than your work experience.

Meanwhile here is an example of the functional resume format:

functional_resume_format

Pros of a Functional Resume Format

The functional format is more flexible when it comes to complimenting unconventional careers. Here are a few other advantages of this resume format:

1. Hides Employment Gaps

The functional resume is a skill-based resume format where candidates can focus on skills and avoid the work history. So, you would not have to follow the rigid structure of the reverse-chronological resume format.

2. Tackles the Problem of Frequent Job Switches

Since the complete focus is on skills, it helps to mask the job-hopping trait of the candidate. You can pull the focus of recruiters to your transferable skills, and try to maintain their interest with it.

Cons of a Functional Resume Format

Since it favors job switching and employment gaps, this resume format is bound to have a few disadvantages, here are a few of them:

1. Not Parsed by Applicant Tracking Systems

Most ATS do not parse the functional resume format. Since an ATS looks for points under the relevant work experience, it cannot correctly read them in this format.

Also, the confusion regarding dates, employment experience, and the focus on skills will throw off the ATS.

2. Seems Fishy to Recruiters and Employers

The functional format raises suspicions in the minds of the recruiters that the candidate is trying to hide something. It is not a well-accepted resume format, so it will take a second for recruiters to adjust.

However, try to research the work culture of the company. If they respect skills and talent, you would potentially be able to get away from just focusing on your skills. Make sure that you make it a convincing case.

Combination Resume Format

As the name suggests, the Combination or Hybrid resume format combines the reverse chronological resume format and the functional resume format.

It allows candidates to present their skills with actual evidence from their professional experience and achievements.

This adds a lot of value to the resume since now the recruiter has an insight into the skills the person possesses, but they can see how the person deployed those skills to create value for the organization.

Sections to Include in Combination Resume Format:

  • Key Skills Section
  • Work Experience Section
  • Education Section
  • Additional Section

Example of Combination Resume:

A mix of both the formats would mean that you pay equal attention to both professional experience and skills. This format is favorable to those who want to reach a middle ground between the other two formats.

Here is an example of a combination resume format:

combination_resume_format_1-1-1

Another example of a combination resume:

This resume format replaces the traditionally used summary to create a more powerful snapshot of your career which is again highly targeted for the job you are applying to.

Here's an example:

combination_resume_format_2-1

Pros of a Combination Resume

As the mixture of the other two formats, it can be the best of both worlds for many. Here are a few advantages of choosing this format:

1. ATS & Recruiter Friendly

The combination resume formats have all the advantages of the reverse-chronological format since they employ the same methodology for dates. They are ATS friendly, recruiter friendly, and well-recognized by recruiters and organizations.

2. Hides Gaps in Employment

Additionally, the combination format can be wisely used to draw the recruiter's attention to skill-based achievements that you've gathered over the years to mellow down the effect of gaps in your employment history.

3. Tackles the Problem of Frequent Job Switches

Even as a frequent job switcher, you can aggregate resume points across jobs and group them under skills to exhibit your expertise by using the combination format.

Cons of Combination Resume

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Here are a few cons you should keep in mind before choosing this format:

1. Time Consuming

Well, since the payoff is high, the time taken to develop a combination resume increases since you have to do the additional work of grouping points under ordinary skills.

It will also take time to do all the normal resume steps such as evaluating the job description and customizing the resume for each company.

2. Not Suitable for Early Stage Professionals

Early-stage professionals might not have enough points to group under relevant skills. In such cases, the grouping does not make sense, and it is better to go with the reverse chronological resume format.

How to Choose the Best Resume Format in 2022?

Now we know about the 3 types of resume formats. And you may be wondering, how can I choose the best resume format for my own needs?

Now, for the majority of candidates, we recommend using the reverse-chronological resume format. Here are the reasons for it:

  • A reverse chronological resume is easily passed through the ATS system
  • Recruiters prefer a reverse chronological resume format over others
  • It’s easier to work with a reverse chronological resume

Now, if you have a career gap, or you’re changing careers, you don’t want to showcase that in your resume, instead, you should focus on your skills.

In this situation, the best format to use is the “Functional” or “Combination” resume format.

However, going with these formats is still very risky. There is a good chance that ATS systems will not recognize these resume formats and may reject your resume. Similarly, most recruiters are not familiar with this resume format, so it will be difficult for them to read your resume.

In a nutshell, if you have no concrete reason, go for the reverse-chronological resume format.

Here is a list of resume formats based on the candidate's experience.

Students Resume Format

Use the reverse chronological resume format for the student's resume.

If you're a student, you don't have much professional experience. But, you would have extracurricular and co-curricular achievements that you can showcase on your resume.

Moreover, if you've done any kind of voluntary work or internships, they can take the spot of your professional experience. Just ensure that you display your work experience by tailoring it to the job you're looking for, atleast to an extent.

Resume Format for Your First Job

Again, if you're making an entry-level resume, the reverse chronological resume format should be your choice. Since you would not have much professional experience, it would be difficult to group your resume points into skills.

So, creating a combination resume would be difficult for you.

Entry-level Resume Format Example:

Resume Format for Mid Level Professionals

Choosing a resume for a mid-level professional is tricky. It depends on the work you have done and the skills you have accumulated over your career.

You have learned a lot of skills, and you have the resume content to show for it. In this case, you should go ahead with a combination resume format.

If you've specialized and focused on a specific area, you should go for the reverse chronological resume. That way, you can show potential employers how you've progressed over the years.

Senior Professionals

At Hiration, we almost always suggest our senior clients go with the combination resume format .

You need to showcase your skills and validate your work with them. You need to modify each resume you send out based on the job description. To do so, highlight the most relevant skills to the job you're applying to.

However, if you're transitioning from a job, you can use a functional resume format to showcase your skills effectively.

  • Write the experiences in bullet format, and don't try to add more than 6-8 bullet points per position.Save the resume in PDF format instead of Docx.

Personal Information: Resume Formatting Tips

  • As much as it pains us to say this, don't write CV or Resume on the top. Just...no.
  • Start with your name in a text size between 14 - 16 points size so that your most distinguishing feature on that piece of paper is your name.
  • Mention your contact details, email ID, and location.
  • Go for a professional email ID and not something like [email protected] or [email protected]
  • Mention your current location. If you are willing to relocate, you can mention the same in your cover letter.

Professional Experience: Resume Formatting Tips

  • Align the company and profile to the left and date and location to the right. It's the industry norm for most single-column resumes, and recruiters usually look for them this way.

  • Mention a one-line description containing figures for all the companies where you have worked
  • Use crisp bullet points starting with action verbs and bold important phrases and words throughout your professional experience section
  • Group similar points together and assign sub-headings to them for greater impact on all the work profiles

Education: Resume Formatting Tips

  • List your most recent qualification first and then mention the university or college name followed by major/minor and the time period
  • Mention your GPA only if it's three or above
  • If it's been more than three years since your graduation or if your GPA is less than 3.5, you can skip your GPA altogether
  • Provide details of academic projects that you completed only if you are an entry-level professional

Additional Sections: Resume Formatting Tips

  • Additional sections can include Training, Certifications, Publications, Extracurricular Achievements, Hobbies/Interests, etc.
  • You can include information about proficiency in languages in this section
  • While listing out your hobbies, try to align your interests along the lines of what might be relevant for the recruiter
  • Try to quantify your interests and achievements. Merely mentioning 'traveling' or 'music' as a hobby adds no value to your resume whatsoever

Fonts, Margins & Spacing: Resume Formatting Tips

  • Go for sans-serif fonts such as Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Century Gothic, Calibri, Lucida Sans, Tahoma, etc. over serif fonts
  • Most ATS are unable to process serif fonts, hence, sans serif fonts are your best bet
  • Make sure that the font size is not smaller than 10 points and no larger than 12 points for the section points
  • You cant compromise the formatting and legibility of the text in the quest to reduce a resume to 1 page
  • Make sure that you leave a minimum of 0.5-inch margin on all sides
  • Before you send across your resume, print it out to see how it would look on paper
  • Keep the spacing single-spaced for your resume, with a line break after each section

Best Resume Layout For 2024 [Free Template]

Background Image

HR managers receive a ton of resumes each day.

And going through every single one of them is a slow and time-consuming process they’re not going to commit to.

So, in most cases, they simply glance through them instead, for as little as 6 seconds .

Now, let’s be real, 6 seconds is really not enough time to take in a resume and decide if they’re going to make for a good candidate or not. If anything, 6 seconds is hardly enough time to read one section of a resume. And that’s the point, HR managers are not reading your resumes.

That’s right.

They simply scan through them and then decide if it’s actually worth reading or not.

This is why your resume layout is so important.

Because let’s face it, even if you have the best resume in the world, the HR manager is just going to put it away and never come back to it unless it looks easy to read at first glance.

They typically check if the resume layout looks simple , well-organized and if it’s easy to scan through, and then go from there.

And if they don’t see the simple resume layout they’re looking for - it’s definitely getting discarded, no matter how good it is.

So, read on to learn how to get your resume layout right.

How to Take the Easy Way Out - Use a Resume Builder

Resume layout design rules: margins, spacing, fonts, font size, and more, 3 best resume layout examples and templates (updated for 2024), how to format your resume - 3 main formats.

  • Content to Put on Your Resume
  • Key takeaways

resume layout builder

Why use a resume builder?

Well, if you’ve used the default Word resume template before, then you’re probably all too familiar with what it’s like to craft something presentable, only for the whole layout to go haywire with just a single tweak.

With a resume builder, the formatting is done for you right off the bat. And if you want to handle the formatting on your own - you’re in charge of all of the sections and elements that go in a resume as well.

So what are you waiting for? Give the Novorésumé resume builder a try!

If you’re still interested in formatting the resume on your own, though, that’s fine too! Read on to learn how to get your resume layout right.

You don’t have to be a designer for this, but by the end of it, you should have an idea of how your resume layout should look like.

First, let’s take a look at what the design part includes:

  • The right font
  • The right font size
  • The right line spacing
  • Consistent design
  • The right length

As general advice, aim for consistency , try to have white space around the margins, and include fonts that stand out , but not too much .

Now, let’s take a look at the design sections in more detail:

You’ll want your resume to have some space in between the sections so that everything is spread out evenly. There needs to be spacing throughout the resume so that it’s easy on the eyes and there is enough room to breathe.

Using the Right Font

Sounds pretty obvious, right?

The font you choose has a direct effect on the readability of your resume.

So, as a rule of thumb, stick to fonts that won’t give the HR manager an eyesore. Instead, pick something easy to read on PDF as well as on paper,

We recommend using Ubuntu , Roboto , and Overpass .

And, of course, never use Comic Sans .

What’s the Right Line Spacing

To save space, go with a 1.0 or 1.15 line space for most text.

Keep Your Resume Design Consistent

The resume design includes things mentioned until now: margins, font, font size, spacing, colors and more.

Once you stick to a design choice, make sure it’s the same throughout the whole resume.

Use Bullets in Each Section (Up to 6-10)

You can use bullet points to sum up your work experience in each section.

Just make sure you don’t overuse them - stick to up to 6-10 bullet points in each.

Keep Your Resume The Ideal Length

The best resumes are 1 page in length.

HR managers get thousands of resumes per month - when an extra page for every resume adds up, they’re not going to spend their valuable time going through them.

Whether you’re an experienced CEO with 20 years of experience, or an intern looking for your first job , you should always try to keep your resume to the 1-page max.

resume layout must haves

Creating your own resume layout from scratch can be a tough and slow process. Instead, if you want a smoother alternative, you can use a creative resume template to speed it up.

Using a resume builder also gives you the advantage of being able to customize your resume based on your profile and the job you’re trying to get.

If you’re not sure what your resume layout should look like though, here are a few examples to get you started:

Looking for a simple resume layout for all industries?

This functional resume template will emphasize your strengths and work experience professionally, while still managing to stand out from the masses.

This is a great approach if you want to emphasize your skills and abilities. As a skill-based resume format , it allows you to focus on what you’re good at, while also allowing you to list your work experience in a structured way.

functional resume layout

Depending on where you’re applying, you can opt-in for a more creative resume layout.

For example, if you want to get a job at an online startup where imagination and innovative thinking are valued, feel free to let your creative side shine.

creative resume layout

Simple doesn’t mean bad.

If you’re applying for a job in a more conservative industry, this minimalistic resume layout might be the way to go.

It’s a step up from the traditional resume, and professional enough to stand on its own.

simple resume layout

Once you’ve got the best resume layout down, depending on where you’re applying, you also need to do some formatting,

What does this mean?

Well, essentially, there are 3 main formats your resume can follow. Each one is ideal for a specific case, and they are as follows:

Reverse-Chronological Resume Format

reverse chronological resume format

This is the resume layout most job seekers go with and probably the one you’ve been using so far. It’s pretty much the industry standard.

With this format, you’re putting more emphasis on the work experience section than all the other ones.

99% of the cases, you’d want to stick to this format. You might want to consider the other two if you’re either a student / recent graduate (functional) or very senior in your field (combination).

Functional Format (skill-based)

skill based functional resume

Feeling unsure about your work experience?

If you’re a recent college grad or someone who doesn’t necessarily have a whole lot of work experience, a functional resume format might be the one for you.

The functional resume format, often also called a skill-based one, focuses on your skills and abilities .

The functional format often has the following sections:

  • Resume objective
  • Skills summary
  • Work experience

Combination Resume Format (Hybrid)

combination resume format

Finally, the combination format, as the name implies, is a hybrid of the other two resume formats.

It is a very middle-ground approach as it gives equal weight to your skills as well as your experience by combining the two formats above.

The combination resume is rarely used, as it’s mainly good for experienced professionals in very specific situations.

If you have 10+ years of experience in different fields, and are applying for a position that requires skills / experiences in 3-4 different fields, that’s when you use the combination format.

Otherwise, we recommend sticking to reverse-chronological or functional.

What Content to Put on Your Resume

Now that we got all the formatting out of the way, it’s time to get started with the contents.

Here’s what you should put on a resume :

Contact information

Even if you have the best resume in the world, it’s not going to matter a lot if the hiring manager can’t contact you

Make sure your full name , professional job title , email address , and any relevant social media handles (LinkedIn, Twitter, Medium, etc.) are all spelled correctly, are accurate and sound professional.

Resume summary or objective

What’s the difference?

Basically, if you have more than 2 years of experience, then you need a resume summary that describes what you have done in the past.

If not, you need a resume objective that defines your motivations and what you hope to gain from the job.

This is your attempt at an elevator pitch within your resume. It should be 2-3 sentences at most and in a very straightforward manner, explain why you’re the best applicant for the job.

Here’s what a brief resume summary might look like:

resume summary on layout

Work Experience

Arguably the most important section of any resume.

This is where you get to brag a little about your qualifications and past job achievements .

If you want to convince the HR manager you’re the right fit (as you should), try to list your experience in a more actionable way.

Well, look back on your time at the previous job.

Did you somehow move the company from point A to point B? Did you increase social media engagement by a certain number? Did you generate more leads in record time?

These are all things the hiring manager might want to know.

Chances are, they already have an idea of what your daily responsibilities were (they are the HR manager, after all). So, try to look for ways to make your work experience more presentable.

Here’s what this would look like in practice:

resume experience layout

With that said though, there are some positions where you just can’t make a huge impact and you have to list your daily tasks instead. If that’s the case, don’t exaggerate and be straightforward within your responsibilities.

There are 2 types of skills: soft skills and hard skills .

Hard skills simply mean skills gained through any technical knowledge or training. They are often specific and essential for completing particular tasks (e.g. specific machine skills, tools, software, etc.)

Soft skills , meanwhile, refer to skills that can be gained from life experience and working with people (e.g. leadership, communication, adaptability, etc.).

Most job ads typically list what skills they’re looking for in candidates. So, be sure to tailor your skills section in your resume based on that.

The education section is fairly straightforward, but can be easy to mess up as there are a few optional sections you can include.

Here’s what you should include:

  • University name
  • Program name
  • Year attended

Here’s what you can include (optional):

  • GPA - if it’s high (3.5+)
  • Honors - if you have any noteworthy ones
  • Academic achievements - again, if anything stands out
  • Minor - if it’s relevant

Now, here’s what that might look like:

education resume layout

If you don’t have a lot of professional work experience, feel free to place your education on top of the work experience section.

Some of the other nice-to-have sections include:

  • Hobbies and interests
  • Volunteering Experience
  • Certifications and Awards
  • Publications

Key Takeaways

There is no such thing as the best resume layout.

There are a lot of things you can customize, and still leave an awesome impression. What counts, though, is whether the HR manager can read your resume at a glance.

If they were to look at your resume for 6 seconds would they be able to get a general idea of who you are and your experience?

If your resume is simple , follows a clear format , and is easy to scan through - then the answer is most likely - yes .

To recap, here’s what you should keep an eye on when working on your resume layout:

  • Resume layout design: is everything consistent and does it give the reader enough space to breathe?
  • Resume layout templates: is your resume going to be functional? Creative? Or simple? Use a resume template so that you don’t have to build everything from scratch
  • Resume format: reverse-chronological if you have plenty of work experience and are not afraid to show it. Functional if that’s not the case and you prefer to let your skills shine, and finally, the hybrid format if you know what you’re doing and want to show off both.
  • Content on a resume: include your contact information , resume summary or objective, work experience, skills, and education.

Now that you have the resume layout down, the job search continues.

After all, getting your resume layout right is only the first step. There’s a lot more to learn if you want to land that dream job .

To comprehensively and objectively rank the top resume writing services, it is essential to have a thorough methodology. The first step in this process was conducting extensive research and analysis. This involved gathering a comprehensive list of reputable resume-writing services from multiple sources such as online searches, customer reviews, industry directories, and personal recommendations.

  • Feature analysis: Evaluate the functionalities provided by each resume builder, considering elements like template variety and quality, customization flexibility, user-friendly editing and formatting options, import/export capabilities, spell check and grammar tools, and integration with job search platforms and professional networks.
  • Template collection: Examine the assortment and quality of templates. Look for a wide range that suits various industries, job levels, and design preferences, considering these templates’ aesthetics, readability, and contemporary design.
  • Editing and customization: Scrutinize the adaptability and user-friendliness of the editing and customization tools each resume builder provides. Assess the capacity to add or modify sections, reorganize content, and tailor resumes to specific job requirements.
  • User interface and experience: Analyze the user interface and the overall user experience each resume builder offers. Evaluate the ease of navigation, instruction clarity, guidance or prompts, and the platform’s responsiveness.
  • Integration with job search platforms: Determine whether resume builders offer seamless integration with popular job search platforms and professional networks like LinkedIn or ATS systems. Consider how well the resumes can be transferred and their compatibility with these platforms.
  • Additional resources: Evaluate if the resume builders provide extra resources such as sample resumes, tools for creating cover letters, interview tips, or career advice. Consider the breadth and practicality of these supplementary resources.
  • Mobile-friendliness: Gauge the mobile-friendliness and responsiveness of the resume builders, recognizing the growing trend of mobile job searching and application processes.
  • Customer support: Reflect on the accessibility and quality of customer support services, encompassing options like live chat, email support, or knowledge bases. Assess the responsiveness and helpfulness of the support team.
  • Pricing and value for money: Appraise the pricing plans presented by the resume builders in terms of the value they offer based on features, usability, and overall service quality.
  • Industry reputation: Consider the standing and trustworthiness of the resume builders, considering factors such as awards, recognition, partnerships, and user feedback from reputable sources.

Buyer’s Guide: Why Use a Resume Builder?

Crafting a well-crafted CV comes naturally to particular job seekers. However, even the most seasoned experts may need help in resume writing. If you find yourself in need of help with creating a compelling resume, here are several ways in which the best online resume builder can be beneficial:

Resume builders provide users with pre-designed templates and helpful tips, streamlining the process of writing a resume and alleviating stress.

Offers Writing Tips

Promoting oneself requires considerable effort. Only some people possess writing skills, even if they enjoy self-promotion. To showcase one’s experience and knowledge effectively, a resume builder can help select the most appropriate words and phrases.

Improves Design

In every field, there are unique standards for an impressive resume. If you need to gain knowledge in design or the tools, resume builders can provide free templates to enhance your resume’s visual appeal and quality.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Recruiters often use ATS systems to scan resumes. A good resume builder will help with formatting to ensure that your resume is easy for these systems to read.

What’s the Best Resume Builder?

The ideal resume builder for each individual may differ according to their specific requirements. If you prefer a tool that offers step-by-step guidance in creating your resume, we suggest using a builder that provides helpful tips and recommendations. If you prefer a resume builder that auto-generates a summary, we recommend using a tool that extracts information from your LinkedIn profile.

For those who enjoy having creative control over their resumes, we suggest using a platform with features. By selecting the resume builder that aligns with your needs and suits your industry and personal style, you’ll significantly increase your chances of capturing the attention of hiring managers.

Resume Builder vs. Resume Writing Service: What Matters for You

When it comes to crafting a resume, there are three options available. You can opt to create it independently, use a resume builder tool, or enlist the services of a professional resume writer. Your best choice will depend on your writing abilities, available time, and financial resources.

Do-It-Yourself

You have the choice to construct a resume entirely by yourself. The benefit of this option is that it costs nothing but requires a significant amount of effort. Along with composing all the information, you must possess graphic design skills.

This approach works well if you have these abilities, but with them, your options for creating a resume are unlimited. To overcome this limitation, you can use a resume builder or enlist the help of a resume writing service.

Resume Builder

A tool for creating resumes allows you to input your details into a template, resulting in an original appearance and layout with no design work. The top resume building tools also offer suggestions on enhancing your resume and tailoring it to match the specific job you are applying for.

While you are still responsible for writing the content, once it is written, you can quickly transfer that information into any other template with just a few simple clicks. Some of these services are free and many like to promote themselves as such, but most require a small payment to download your finished resume.

Professional Resume Writing Service

Professional resume writing services are expensive, but they offer the convenience of handling all the work for you. An experienced writer will gather relevant information about your background and transform it into a unique and engaging resume.

The process typically takes a few days, and the level of originality in the outcome largely relies on your choice of company and writer. However, we will not delve into these services further in this guide.

Are Resume Builders Worth It?

Definitely, without a doubt. An effective resume creator will guarantee that your CV is formatted correctly to navigate Applicant Tracking Systems and ultimately reach the hands of recruiters.

Is It Unprofessional to Use a Microsoft Word Resume Template?

Relying on a template will not set you apart, and there is a high likelihood that your application will be dismissed because your resume is identical to those of other job seekers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right resume builder is crucial in today’s competitive job market. Creating a professional and impactful resume that stands out from the crowd can significantly impact your job search. With the right tool, you can save time, improve your chances of landing an interview, and ultimately secure your dream job.

When selecting a resume builder, consider your specific needs and priorities. Look for features like customizable templates, industry-specific examples, and the ability to export your resume in different formats. Consider user reviews and ratings to ensure you choose a reputable and reliable platform.

Remember, an exceptional tool for crafting resumes should give you the power to present your skills, experience, and accomplishments effectively. It should simplify and expedite creating a resume without hassle. Investing in a reliable resume builder is investing in your professional future.
