You can easily make beautiful rakhi at home using a few simple supplies, like buckram sheet and silk thread. Add decorative gemstones, chains, and mirrors to your rakhi so it stands out during the ceremony. Finish your rakhi with a colorful ribbon that matches your decorations.

Using a Buckram Sheet

Step 1 Cut four circles of equal size out of a buckram sheet.

Use fabric scissors to cut the sheet.
You can find a buckram sheet at your local fabric store.

Step 2 Separate the circles into two pairs and glue them together.

Thick, felt cartoon stickers
Kid-friendly scissors
Satin ribbon

Using the scissors, cut the ribbon to an appropriate length.
Lay the ribbon flat and use a dry cloth to wipe off any dust that may be on the ribbon.
Cut the cartoon sticker of your choice into shape.
Spread the glue evenly across the back of the stickers.
Paste onto the ribbon and let it dry.

Peel-off race car stickers

Use the scissors to cut the foam ribbon to regular size.
Spread the child-friendly adhesive on the velvet or cotton cloth.
Sprinkle glitter all over – Stick the craft crystals in a pattern or design.
Paste the cloth to the ribbon.

Cut the Superman logo, and paste it onto the foam sheet.
Paste the foam sheet onto the ribbon.

What can be more personal than your child’s name on the rakhi? This is sure to bring a huge smile out of both of your little ones.

Felt paper cut into alphabet shapes
Cut the ribbon into the required length.
Spread glue evenly on the ribbon.
Paste the letters that make your child’s name in order on the ribbon.

Every child loves arts and crafts. Here is a fun way to incorporate the artistic stylings of your child into a rakhi.

A piece of white felt paper
Crayons or finger paint

Cut the felt paper into a small square.
Ask your child to draw or paint on it.
Spread an even layer of glue on the ribbon.

A silver satin ribbon
To make this simple rakhi, simply paste the butterfly embellishment to the satin ribbon.
If the butterfly is plain, you can also add glitter or bedazzle it.

11. Jute and Stone Rakhi

This is a very innovative way of using simple materials such as jute to make a lovely rakhi .

Coloured stone
Thick card paper circular bases
Take the thick circular base, add glue to it and make circles with the jute rope on it.
You can make some more tiny designs with the jute rope and add them over the jute circle.
Take the second circular base, add glue, and add a double jute rope as the dori . Over this, add the rakhi to stick on it and let it dry.
Once dry, add the coloured stones in any design of your choice.

12. Quilling Rakhi

Quilling is in trend right now and this beautiful craft will make for a creative rakhi .

Quilling paper
Thick paper circular bases
Kundan stickers
Make paper quilling of various shapes and sizes of your choice.
Place the Kundan stickers at the centre of the quilled paper.
Take the satin ribbon and on this, place the Kundan stickers and the quilling paper design.

13. Silk Thread Rakhi

Silk thread was traditionally used to make rakhis in earlier times. So why not bring back this tradition?

Silk thread
Pearl ball/stone chain
Doughnut rings of 3 different sizes
Golden beads
Take the doughnut rings and stick the silk threads with glue.
Place two of the jump rings between the dori which is in the doughnut.
Apply glue on one side of the doughnut and stick the pearl ball chain.
Take a silk thread and tie it around the chain and doughnut.
Place and glue the two remaining small doughnuts in the larger doughnut.
Add the pearl ball chain and gold beads over the joint of the doughnuts to decorate it.
Use the dori inside the jump rings to make a knot.
Place the gold beads through it to make another knot to secure it. Now decorate the doughnuts with stones.

14. Matchstick Rakhi

Matchstick is a very versatile material to make rakhis of different shapes and sizes, thus giving it an artistic look.

Matchsticks
Card paper material
Nail polish
Pearls and rhinestones
Beads/stones
Cardboard pieces
Paint the matchstick heads with the nail polish and keep them aside.
Glue some cardboard pieces and stick the matchsticks in a design of your choice.
Take a cardboard piece and cut it in a circle. Stick the matchstick design you have prepared on this.
Take a small card paper, cut it in a circle. Stick a rhinestone in the centre of this paper. Take the ball chain and wrap it in circles around the rhinestone.
Place it over the matchstick design.
Stick a ribbon to the back of the rakhi, and cover it with a circular piece of card paper.

Earbuds are a very creative and fun way to make a beautiful rakhi !

Cardboard base cut in a circle
Pearls or golden beads
Cut the earbuds and retain the white tips.
Apply glue on the circular cardboard base.
Stick the white earbud tips on this cardboard base in a circular manner.
Place some more earbud tips over the tips stuck earlier. Add some golden beads to the centre.
Stitch the pearls and golden beads to make a string, and attach this string at the back of the base.

16. Peacock Rakhi

This has got to be one of the most elegant and regal rakhi designs!

Pearl beads
Foam or leather blue colour base
White, blue and Turkish colour stones
Golden beads, dori and charm
Shiny and glittery colours
First, take a small piece of the blue foam and trace an outline of the peacock. Now cut two pieces of the same design.
Put some glue on the outline and use the shiny glitter colour on the neck part of the first peacock cutout.
Cut small oval-shaped foam pieces for the peacock’s tail and with the help of the glue, add the blue glitters on it.
Place the golden dori or string on the back of the motif and paste another foam peacock piece over it.
Use the beads and charms to decorate the string dori .
Create the outline for the peacock with the golden string zari. Use the Turkish, blue and white stones all over to complete the rest of the design.

A perfect rakhi for your brother that says “nazar na lage.”

Foam sheets
First, take a small piece of the blue foam, trace an evil eye’s outline, and cut it.
Now cut one big white circle and one small black circle out of a foam sheet.
Using glue add a white circle in the centre of the evil eye cut out and a black circle in the middle of the white circle.
Place a string on the back of the evil eye and secure it using tape.
Use the beads and other small charms to decorate the string.

Cutting the satin ribbon in your desired length.

Cut the ribbon to the required size.
Cut the foam glitter sheets into a circle that is smaller than the goto flower.
Paste the cut glitter sheet onto the goto flower.
Paste the superhero embellishment onto the glitter sheet attached to the goto flower on the centre.

Wrap this around twice and insert the cord that is 1 cm into the loop.
Pull out at the end of the cord’s opposite side.

Sketch pens
Cut a flower shape out of the foam sheet.
From another foam sheet, cut out a small circle.
Stick the googly eyes on the small circle and draw a smiling face on it.

Paste the satin ribbon on the back of the flower shape cutout.

Cut 4-5 squares of various coloured paper and keep them aside.
Now draw patterns of your choice over the square cutouts.
Once the cutouts are dry, stick a satin ribbon over one square.
Now with the help of small double tape pieces, stack the squares on top of the other in a criss-cross pattern.
Decorate the topmost square with the beads.

Take a square-shaped card paper, fold it in half and cut it.
Replace the other half with a different colour.
Fold the paper that is half into another half as per breadth and later lengthwise.

Take the edges that are remaining and fold them inwards to form an ‘s’.
Repeat this with the other coloured paper too, merge both these papers by folding them together.
Stick the edge that is open, and form a tight circle from the quilling strip. Stick this at the star’s centre.

Take a foam sheet and cut a circle.
Now cut another small circle.

Stick a Kundan bead in the centre.

2024: a milestone year which marks the 30 th anniversary of Old Dominion University’s MFA Creative Writing Program. Its origins can be said to go back to April 1978, when the English Department’s (now Professor Emeritus, retired) Phil Raisor organized the first “Poetry Jam,” in collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass (then a visiting poet at ODU). Raisor describes this period as “ a heady time .” Not many realize that from 1978 to 1994, ODU was also the home of AWP (the Association of Writers and Writing Programs) until it moved to George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

The two-day celebration that was “Poetry Jam” has evolved into the annual ODU Literary Festival, a week-long affair at the beginning of October bringing writers of local, national, and international reputation to campus. The ODU Literary Festival is among the longest continuously running literary festivals nationwide. It has featured Rita Dove, Maxine Hong Kingston, Susan Sontag, Edward Albee, John McPhee, Tim O’Brien, Joy Harjo, Dorothy Allison, Billy Collins, Naomi Shihab Nye, Sabina Murray, Jane Hirshfield, Brian Turner, S.A. Cosby, Nicole Sealey, Franny Choi, Ross Gay, Adrian Matejka, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Ilya Kaminsky, Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Jose Olivarez, and Ocean Vuong, among a roster of other luminaries. MFA alumni who have gone on to publish books have also regularly been invited to read.

From an initial cohort of 12 students and three creative writing professors, ODU’s MFA Creative Writing Program has grown to anywhere between 25 to 33 talented students per year. Currently they work with a five-member core faculty (Kent Wascom, John McManus, and Jane Alberdeston in fiction; and Luisa A. Igloria and Marianne L. Chan in poetry). Award-winning writers who made up part of original teaching faculty along with Raisor (but are now also either retired or relocated) are legends in their own right—Toi Derricotte, Tony Ardizzone, Janet Peery, Scott Cairns, Sheri Reynolds, Tim Seibles, and Michael Pearson. Other faculty that ODU’s MFA Creative Writing Program was privileged to briefly have in its ranks include Molly McCully Brown and Benjamín Naka-Hasebe Kingsley.

Our student body is diverse — from all over the country as well as from closer by. Over the last ten years, we’ve also seen an increase in the number of international students who are drawn to what our program has to offer: an exciting three-year curriculum of workshops, literature, literary publishing, and critical studies; as well as opportunities to teach in the classroom, tutor in the University’s Writing Center, coordinate the student reading series and the Writers in Community outreach program, and produce the student-led literary journal Barely South Review . The third year gives our students more time to immerse themselves in the completion of a book-ready creative thesis. And our students’ successes have been nothing but amazing. They’ve published with some of the best (many while still in the program), won important prizes, moved into tenured academic positions, and been published in global languages. What we’ve also found to be consistently true is how collegial this program is — with a lively and supportive cohort, and friendships that last beyond time spent here.

Our themed studio workshops are now offered as hybrid/cross genre experiences. My colleagues teach workshops in horror, speculative and experimental fiction, poetry of place, poetry and the archive — these give our students so many more options for honing their skills. And we continue to explore ways to collaborate with other programs and units of the university. One of my cornerstone projects during my term as 20 th Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth was the creation of a Virginia Poets Database, which is not only supported by the University through the Perry Library’s Digital Commons, but also by the MFA Program in the form of an assistantship for one of our students. With the awareness of ODU’s new integration with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and its impact on other programs, I was inspired to design and pilot a new 700-level seminar on “Writing the Body Fantastic: Exploring Metaphors of Human Corporeality.” In the fall of 2024, I look forward to a themed graduate workshop on “Writing (in) the Anthropocene,” where my students and I will explore the subject of climate precarity and how we can respond in our own work.

Even as the University and wider community go through shifts and change through time, the MFA program has grown with resilience and grace. Once, during the six years (2009-15) that I directed the MFA Program, a State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) university-wide review amended the guidelines for what kind of graduate student would be allowed to teach classes (only those who had already earned 18 or more graduate credits). Thus, two of our first-year MFA students at that time had to be given another assignment for their Teaching Assistantships. I thought of AWP’s hallmarks of an effective MFA program , which lists the provision of editorial and publishing experience to its students through an affiliated magazine or press — and immediately sought department and upper administration support for creating a literary journal. This is what led to the creation of our biannual Barely South Review in 2009.

In 2010, HuffPost and Poets & Writers listed us among “ The Top 25 Underrated Creative Writing MFA Programs ” (better underrated than overrated, right?) — and while our MFA Creative Writing Program might be smaller than others, we do grow good writers here. When I joined the faculty in 1998, I was excited by the high caliber of both faculty and students. Twenty-five years later, I remain just as if not more excited, and look forward to all the that awaits us in our continued growth.

Poetry, creative writing and just listening can combat teen mental health risks | Opinion

They’re experiencing heartache, depression and anxiety. Sometimes they’re falling in love, but often it’s unrequited, or they’re navigating a bad break-up. They care about the environment, they fight for social justice, and they don’t care what your personal pronoun is — as long as you respect theirs.

Most often, they just want people — especially adults — to listen to them.

This is what I learned from the students performing their original poetry at the Detroit Youth Poetry Slam hosted by InsideOut Literary Arts. Fifteen brave teens competed to be one of the top five prize-winning finalists, and over 100 audience members cheered them on.

I’m no stranger to youth poetry performances. As executive director of InsideOut Literary Arts, I’ve been to countless open mics, creative writing workshops and public performances. I’ve been moved to tears more times than I can count, and I’ve been pulled to many a standing ovation with whoops and hollers that would rival any sporting event. There is always something deeply powerful about what young people have to say — their voices are raw and real and courageous.

At the same time, I’ve known for several years that adolescent mental health has continued to worsen post-pandemic. ( Check out the CDC’s full report on youth risk behavior, which includes the fact that nearly half of high school students reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless. ) But we also know something else: Just one caring adult can make a difference. According to the CDC, "Research shows that surrounding youth with the proper support can reverse these trends and help our youth now and in the future."

The young people who touched the stage wrote on perennial topics for teens through the ages — parents and first loves — and pressing issues for recent generations in particular — racial injustice and climate change. 

But something about this particular event felt different: that surrounding of support from the audience really stood out.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a room full of strangers become a community before my eyes. As each teen approached the mic, took a deep breath, and prepared to bare their soul, the audience was there to meet them. They clapped and cheered them on. There were hugs and high fives. This event was not just about the bravery of the young poets, but the love, joy and enthusiasm of the crowd.

When one teen struggled to find their words, they were met with finger snaps. When another shared the difficulties of living in a “broken home” the audience yelled encouragement. And when a student earned a rare “perfect score” for a bilingual protest piece modeled after Tracy Chapman’s “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution,” the audience erupted into thunderous applause.

This was “one caring adult” personified — a whole room of them in fact. 

It’s also the answer to an unintended burden many adults place on young people; it’s tempting to think that these brave young poets, and the many youth activists of their generation, will “save” us. But this is unfair, shrugging our responsibility to really show up for them.

While poetry may be the frame for InsideOut’s programming, what we’re really building is community — a place where caring adults hold space and really listen, and where students know they belong. When it comes to the young people in your midst, I hope you’ll join me in the audience. Listen earnestly. Ask questions, or better yet, just say: Tell me more.

Parkland mom hopes gruesome picture book on shootings jolts politicians

Patricia Oliver walked into Rep. Tony Cárdenas’s D.C. office last week and handed the California Democrat a new book she had written.

The colorful illustrations on the cover looked like those of any other children’s book: A smiling boy walking off a school bus holding daisies. But the title, “Joaquin’s First School Shooting,” revealed the horror that awaited inside. The Os in “Shooting” are holes, representing the bullets that killed Oliver’s 17-year-old son, Joaquin, and 16 others in the Parkland, Fla., school shooting in 2018.

In his office, Cárdenas stared at the book in his hands for more than 10 seconds before retrieving tissues from his desk, video of the encounter shared with The Washington Post showed. He told Oliver through tears that he has a grandson named Joaquin.

“You made me realize that I pray that Joaquin never has his first school shooting,” Cárdenas told Oliver.

Since the Parkland shooting, Oliver and her husband, Manuel, have advocated for gun control, attending protests across the United States and founding Change the Ref , an advocacy group against gun violence. But as mass shootings continue, they created a children’s book in hopes of sharing their message in the simplest way.

The short book describes, through detailed illustrations and rhymes, the experiences of Joaquin and his high school classmates after a gunman entered their school.

“This is a specific way to raise to politicians and let them know in a very simple, childish way how important it is for them to take action,” Oliver, 56, told The Post. “It’s very powerful in the sense that the illustrations that you can see inside the book, the vocabulary that we use, the narrative that we use, it’s very simple and very hurtful. We believe that in this way, politicians will be touched by the need of doing something.”

After the May 2022 massacre at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Tex. , creative directors at Burson Cohn & Wolfe, an international communications firm, developed the idea for a book about school shootings and asked the Olivers to collaborate.

For Oliver, the decision was easy. Joaquin had told his parents he wanted to make a difference in the world through writing. He often awoke in the middle of the night to pen love poems to his girlfriend, Victoria Gonzalez, and jot down his thoughts on gun and immigration issues.

The Olivers wanted readers to follow scenes from inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018. The book’s title is meant to convey that school shootings have become normal for kids — like their first steps, first word or first vacation.

“This book is Joaquin’s story, but Joaquin’s story is everyone’s stories,” said Fede Garcia, Burson Cohn & Wolfe’s chief creative officer. “We all can be the face of the book.”

On the day of the shooting, Joaquin brought daisies to school for his girlfriend. On the book cover, he’s wearing a shirt with an avocado print — to represent his love for guacamole — and a black beanie he often sported. While many children’s books include finger holes to turn the pages, the holes used to progress through “Joaquin’s First School Shooting” are located on children’s bodies to simulate bullet holes.

“It’s the hardest book I’ve ever had to draw,” María Lavezzi, who has been an illustrator for 13 years, said in Spanish. “I cried and cried. It’s impossible for it not to spark something within you or at least make you question: What do we have to do to put an end to this violence?”

The first page sets the book’s tone. It displays an illustration of Joaquin lying dead on the floor with a Valentine’s Day card and paint surrounding him. Joaquin was in his creative writing class, composing cards for his girlfriend and his friends, at the time of the shooting.

“THE END OF THE DAY, WAS ALSO MY OWN. BLED OUT ON THE FLOOR, AND NEVER GOT HOME,” the page reads.

The other illustrations feature more dead children and bullets shattering a window. One picture shows crying kids running through a hallway next to colorful lockers.

Many words are printed in red to represent blood. The final illustration displays a protest in D.C. with the message: “WE MUST NOT FORGET, OR I’VE DIED IN VAIN! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, PLEASE … NEVER AGAIN!”

This year, 21 school shootings have occurred in the United States, according to The Post’s data .

“We went for the full impact because that’s what this situation needs,” said Garcia, the chief creative officer. “You need to sometimes grab politicians by the collar.”

Within a week of shootings in Cleveland, Tex. , Henryetta, Okla. , and Atlanta , the book published May 5 . The next day, a shooting occurred in an Allen, Tex., mall . The Olivers asked anyone who buys the book to send copies to politicians.

Still, Oliver said looking at the book is painful.

“But I immediately go back to normal,” Oliver said. “Because I have a duty in front of me, and I have to hold it very hard because that's what Joaquin wants from me.”

Last week, Oliver shared the book in D.C. with about 25 politicians representing both parties. Early in the week, she met with Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), who stopped and cried while reading the first page.

“Meeting with Joaquin’s parents just literally steels me to say, ‘We have to do something about this,’” Dean told The Post.

On May 10, after Oliver met with Minority Whip Katherine M. Clark (D-Mass.), Clark read the book on the House floor, directing her message to colleagues who she said “continue to prioritize guns over our children.”

“Let us remember all of the victims and remember that this is a choice,” Clark said after her reading . “We have solutions. We can end gun violence in this country.”

During Oliver’s meeting with Cárdenas, when the congressman told her that his grandson is also named Joaquin, Oliver apologized.

“I’m very sorry that I have to do this,” Oliver told Cárdenas. “But I have to.”

Placing a hand on Oliver’s shoulder, Cárdenas responded: “No, please don’t say that. You have to do this only because you care about everybody else.”

Oliver left D.C. on Saturday, uncertain whether the book changed gun supporters’ opinions. On Monday, as she prepared for another week of advocacy, she received an alert on her phone: A gunman had killed three people in Farmington, N.M.

“That’s why we have to keep working hard,” Oliver said. “Because this is killing us.”

Job Summary:

PBS Wisconsin Education's Education Producer develops and produces classroom media for upper elementary and middle school science, social studies, local history and culture, and English Language Arts studies. This may include identifying topics, themes, and/or learning goals, conducting research, writing scripts, interviewing guests, or directing hosts. This position primarily produces in video format, but may also produce interactives, animations, and educational text supports. In this hybrid role you will bring your aesthetic and creative skills to select stories and generate ideas for in-classroom learning media, manage logistics for and lead in the production of that media, and oversee and/or participate in post-production tasks all the way through media publishing. We are looking to fill two Education Producer positions. One position will primarily be focusing on producing science education content, while the other position will focus on Arts and Culture content produced for ELA classrooms. Both producers will be expected to assist with the production of media that focuses on other curricular content areas produced by our team. This position works with colleagues across the educational ecosystem to ensure that the content we create is aligned with educational standards in use in Wisconsin and works with advisors to ensure that the content is accurate and inclusive. This position reports to the Executive Producer of Education.

Responsibilities:

25% Researches and develops production strategy for one or more programs across broadcast and digital platforms
35% Produces, develops, and edits content that may include identifying topics, themes, guests, conducting pre-interviews and/or interviews, writing, and/or integrating content for multimedia platforms
10% Performs daily operational activities for live and pre-recorded content, and may direct the editorial and creative process of production activities
15% Collaborates with other content creators in pre- to post-production processes, prepares materials, and handles logistics for broadcast and/or digital publications
5% Maintains familiarity with studio equipment and/or applicable technology for production
5% May schedule and direct operational activities for content production, including live/recorded studio or field productions
5% Collaborate with project partners, educators, and cross-department units to ensure produced media aligns with agreed upon or desired learning goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Experience producing video and/or creating educational resources. - Competency in video production; experience with pre-production, production, and/or post-production processes. - Strong written communication skills as needed for the pre-production process. e.g. Script development, curriculum development etc. - Proven ability to translate topics into easily understood material, with an ability to employ engaging, creative approaches. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Technical cinematography skills, including knowledge of DSLR and/or cinema-style cameras, lenses, and lighting. - Technical knowledge of video editing post-production, including familiarity with Adobe Premiere and motion graphics. - Familiarity communicating topics for learning, familiarity with National or Wisconsin state standards - For the Education Science Producer; experience communicating science topics for learning, familiarity with National or Wisconsin state science standards, and familiarity with environmental education and climate science. - For the Education Arts & Culture Producer, familiarity communicating ELA topics for learning, familiarity with National or Wisconsin state ELA standards, and familiarity with ELA education.

Full Time: 100% This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
