My father and mother both work in the government sector and they tell us many things about their work. My uncle works in the private sector. My uncle is a gaming designer who teaches us many interesting things and shows us many new games. My sister goes to the same school and we have many friends in common.

My grandfather is a retired police officer, who is very strict and punctual about our daily work. He teaches us about disciples and makes sure we follow them. My grandmother is a housewife and prepares all of my favourite dishes. We always discuss our day while having dinner together.

We go on various trips to many places. Once a month we go on a picnic and every six months once we go to different places. We celebrate every festival together with lots of sweets and our extended family also takes part along with us. Every week Saturday and Sunday we go with my father and uncle to play sports on the ground. They train us on many activities like running, volleyball and swimming.

We all love each other, respect and care for each other's feelings. They teach me good lessons about unity, love and cooperation among ourselves. We pray to god every single day and wish everyone to have a good day. I feel that families are a blessing not everyone is fortunate enough to have. However, you have respect and care about every member of the family. It is not good to disobey them. Many people these days spend time away from the family in order to become independent.

However, they do realize the importance of a family then. Families are really essential as they help in our growth and development. They establish us into a complete person with which we create our own individual identity. Moreover, they always provide us with a sense of security and this gives us a safe environment.

We learn how to socialize from our families only and this will develop our intellect. Many studies show that people who live and stay with their families tend to be happier than ones living alone.

Families are the only ones who always believe in us when the whole world doubts us. Similarly, when we are down and out of control, they are the first ones to cheer you up. Certainly, it is a true blessing to have a positive family by our side.

Essay On My Family For Class 1 Kids

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay About My Family for Class 1

My family essay in english – 10 lines for class 1, short essay on my family for class 1, what will your first grader learn from the ‘my family’ essay.

Essay writing is vital for children since this activity helps a child develop their thought processes. When a child writes about their family, they tend to understand the value of their family from that tender age itself. A family is a group of one’s own people who stay under the same roof. They can be parents and grandparents, children, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties. A family may include pets who form an essential part of a family. While writing about the family, the child understands the value of love, care, cooperation, respect, kindness, and support. Being exposed to these values, the child grows up to be a caring adult.

There are some things to keep in mind when writing an essay on your family. So, make sure to include all these points to enhance its quality:

  • Mention all your family members, such as your parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
  • You can also mention their profession, for adding that personal touch.
  • Talk about your current and past pets to add an emotional and unique aspect.
  • You can also talk about which member you are the closest to, and why.
  • Mention the family activities you all do together.
  • Mention a fond memory involving the entire family.

Family is one of the most important aspects of a child. The ten lines on ‘My Family’ talk about the importance of each family member. They also emphasize the values, principles, and emotional bonding among the family members –

  • I have a big family.
  • My father’s a businessman, and my mother’s a teacher.
  • My grandfather is a retired businessman, and my grandmother is a stay-at-home-mother.
  • My grandparents are the heads of the family
  • My brother studies in high school.
  • My uncle and aunt run a shelter for helpless animals.
  • My cousins go to college.
  • I love my pets, Tyson and Julie.
  • My family always helps poor people and street animals.
  • There’s a lot of love, cooperation, and kindness in all my family members, and I love my family.

A family means the world to a child. It is the family members with whom a child spends the most time since birth, and the family lays the foundation of a child’s character. Below is a short essay about this topic –

My family is big. I live with my parents, grandparents, brother, uncle, aunty, cousins, and pets – Tyson and Julie. My father is a businessman. My mother is a teacher. My grandfather is a retired businessman, and my grandmother is a homemaker. My brother studies in high school, which is far from home. My uncle runs a pharmacy. Both uncle and aunt also run a shelter to take care of helpless animals. My cousins study in college. Our family has adopted Tyson and Julie from the school ground in the neighbourhood. They lived there with their siblings and their mother. All of us have our family dinner together. All of us kids play with Tyson and Julie on our lawn. On weekends, my father and uncle take us to the park.

A simple essay on this topic will play a big role in a child’s life. Essay writing will develop the child’s thought process. It will help them think about their family and express those thoughts on paper. This develops their skill in the formation of sentences, figuring out basic grammar, and enhancing their creative skills. Writing a composition about the family will instill the importance of a family in a child during times when everyone is occupied in the digital world, overlooking the importance of family bonds. Spending family time together strengthens the connection among the family members. They support each other, which is a very important factor for a child, even after they grow up. The child knows that their family will always be there as a support system, come what may. The family will give the child a safe environment and a sense of security. The family builds the identity of a child and builds their character. Even after they grow up, the child will be a reflection of their family. Writing a family essay for Grade 1 will enhance the child’s emotional bonding with all the family members.

Essay writing for a little child of Class 1 is quite important, as it helps the child think and then express those thoughts on paper, helping them to form sentences and know the basics of grammar. And among the many topics, making them write about their family can make them understand the importance of family and how to articulate their feelings better through an essay.

How to Make Room for One Million New Yorkers

A photograph of the author.

By Vishaan Chakrabarti

Vishaan Chakrabarti is the founder of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, a New York City architecture firm, and the former director of planning for Manhattan.

New York City doesn’t have enough homes. The average New Yorker now spends 34 percent of pre-tax income on rent, up from just 20 percent in 1965. There are many reasons homes in the city are so expensive, but at the root of it all, even after the pandemic, is supply and demand: Insufficient housing in our desirable city means more competition — and therefore sky-high prices — for the few new homes that trickle onto the market.

Some New Yorkers harbor fantasies that instead of building more, we can meet our housing needs through more rent control, against the advice of most economists , or by banning pieds-à-terre or by converting all vacant office towers into residential buildings, despite the expense and complexity . Given the enormity of the crisis, such measures would all be drops in the bucket, leading many to worry that if we were to actually build the hundreds of thousands of homes New Yorkers need, we would end up transforming the city into an unrecognizable forest of skyscrapers.

This resistance to change is more than just the usual grumbling from opinionated New Yorkers; it has become a significant obstacle, and it threatens to stifle the vitality of this great city. As Binyamin Appelbaum of The Times argues in his analysis of New York’s housing crisis: “New York is not a great city because of its buildings. It is a great city because it provides people with the opportunity to build better lives.”

I Want a City, Not a Museum

New York’s layers of laws to protect existing buildings has led to a shortage of housing.

By Binyamin Appelbaum

To do that, New York needs to build more housing, and it can. New York could add dwellings for well over a million people — homes most New Yorkers could afford — without substantially changing the look and feel of the city.

My architecture firm, Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, previously worked with Times Opinion to imagine the future of the city’s rail infrastructure and streets . This time, we took a fresh look at housing.

We found a way to add more than 500,000 homes — enough to house more than 1.3 million New Yorkers — without radically changing the character of the city’s neighborhoods or altering its historic districts.

Here’s how we got to 500,000 housing units — the same number that the mayor has called a “moonshot goal.”

Apartments near public transit are convenient for residents and better for the environment, so we started by looking at areas within a half-mile of train stations and ferry terminals.

Next, we excluded parts of the city that might be at risk of flooding in the future.

In the remaining areas, we identified more than 1,700 acres of underutilized land: vacant lots, single-story retail buildings, parking lots and office buildings that could be converted to apartments.

For each lot, we calculated how much housing we could add without building any higher than nearby structures.

Take this single-story grocery store in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.

A mid-rise apartment complex built above a replacement grocery store could create 58 new housing units. The resulting structure wouldn't be any taller than the apartment complex next to it.

We also identified sites that could support smaller developments, like this vacant lot on the northern edge of the Bronx.

Low-rise apartment buildings house many more people than single-family homes. If designed thoughtfully, they could become just as much a part of the urban fabric as the city's brownstones.

This single-story store in Flushing, Queens, is just minutes away from a subway stop on a line that runs straight to Midtown Manhattan. It’s a prime example of underutilized land.

Matching the density of surrounding buildings, a high-rise built above new retail spaces could create 242 apartments.

Last, we considered office buildings that could be converted to apartments.

Office building conversions can require a tremendous amount of construction. But we should consider any reasonable proposal to house more New Yorkers.

The hypothetical buildings in our analysis would add 520,245 homes for New Yorkers. With that many new housing units, more than a million New Yorkers would have a roof over their head that they could afford, near transit and away from flood zones, all while maintaining the look and feel of the city.

Of course, adding apartment buildings would place more demand on our subways and schools in some neighborhoods. But the construction of over 520,000 homes would stimulate our economy; add people to our sidewalks, making them safer; and make the city more accessible to middle-class families — who are essential to the long-term health and prosperity of New York.

How to add 520,245 housing units to N.Y.C.

conversions

Getting to 500,000

How many housing units our proposed buildings would add.

Office conversions

Mid-rises wouldn’t feel out of place

in many parts of the Bronx and Queens.

Almost all of the office conversions

we’re proposing are in Manhattan.

Residents of high-rises along Atlantic Avenue could easily take the subway to work.

Low-rises near the

Staten Island Railway

could house thousands

more New Yorkers.

Several political, legal and economic impediments stand in the way of addressing New York City’s housing crisis. Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul have proposed ambitious plans to build hundreds of thousands of new housing units, but they have faced stiff opposition. Our City Council and State Legislature need to support a significant expansion of housing supply for the city or otherwise answer for our housing and homelessness crisis.

There are many reasons it is so difficult to build new housing in New York City — including zoning, the under-taxation of vacant and underutilized land, the continuing rise of construction costs, the elimination of important tax incentives, and intense and often misguided anti-development sentiments. These challenges can and should be addressed. But please, don’t let people tell you we can’t build the homes New Yorkers need because we’ve run out of room or because it would ruin the city’s character. We are, in fact, a very big apple.

Methodology

We identified underutilized lots using the Department of City Planning’s PLUTO dataset. Transit stations include stops for the subway, ferry, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North train lines. For the flood risk analysis, we used the NYC Flood Hazard Mapper’s 0.2 percent annual chance floodplain for 2100.

Contiguous lots facing the same street were merged to maximize hypothetical development potential; small and irregular lots were excluded from the analysis. Maximum building heights were determined by looking at buildings in an 800-foot radius from sites on local streets or quarter-mile radius for sites on more heavily trafficked thoroughfares, as defined by the city’s LION street database.

For low- , mid- and high-rises, we calculated the number of units in each proposed building using the following assumptions: We allocated 37 percent to 45 percent of each lot to open space, and then multiplied the remaining lot area by the number of stories allowed as determined above to calculate the amount of buildable area. Of that total buildable area, we allotted 15 percent to hallways, lobbies and mechanical spaces; we divided the remaining residential space by an average unit size of 750 square feet to determine the number of units.

To identify offices that could be converted to apartments, we created a list of larger, older offices that were built between 1950 and 1990 and have not been altered since 2003. We excluded offices that are publicly owned or have architectural or historical significance. To estimate the number of units in the proposed conversions, we allocated 40 percent of each building to hallways, lobbies and mechanical spaces.

To calculate how many people could live in the proposed housing, we used a rate of 2.56 people per housing unit, based on statistics for New York City from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Family gifted custom My Little Pony to honor 7-year-old who died from asthma attack

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR/Gray News) - A Virginia family trying to work through a tragedy now has something unique to hold onto and remember their little girl after her death from an asthma attack.

Margaret Staver Joy Kaufman, called “Maggie Joy” by her family, was 7 years old when she died March 2 after suffering from an asthma attack, WVIR reports .

“Takes a lot to get to me, but I was on the emergency room floor crying like an infant,” said Evan Kaufman, Maggie Joy’s father. “It’s a pain that will stay with us – my family, my son and my wife – forever.”

Margaret Staver Joy Kaufman, called “Maggie Joy” by her family, was 7 years old when she died...

As her family grieves, it’s Maggie Joy’s toys, especially her My Little Pony toys, that keep her memory alive.

“What you have to understand about Maggie is that she was an encyclopedia, probably an expert, on My Little Pony. I think we had 100 of them,” Evan Kaufman said.

The 7-year-old’s love for My Little Pony inspired her dad to reach out to Hasbro, the company that makes the toys, and share his daughter’s story. The family didn’t expect to hear back, but Hasbro did answer – in a big way.

“In the darkest times and the most painful circumstances, sometimes there can be a light of joy,” Evan Kaufman said.

A few weeks later, while checking the mail, the family found that one of their packages contained something special: Hasbro sent an etching of an artist’s rendition of a “Maggie Joy” pony.

“I started to shake. My knees were buckling. It was very emotional because this was a kindness from somebody that I don’t know,” Evan Kaufman said.

Hasbro created a one-of-a-kind My Little Pony in honor of 7-year-old Maggie Joy Kaufman. It’s...

Then, a couple of days later, they received another package. Hasbro had taken things a step further and brought the sketch to life.

“Maggie Joy’s mind is blown somewhere because it was her dream to become a pony. So, here she is transformed into a little pony,” said Kelly Kaufman, Maggie Joy’s mom.

It’s a piece of their daughter the Kaufmans can cherish forever.

A note was attached to the toy, detailing how Hasbro specifically made this one-of-a-kind My Little Pony to reflect what made Maggie Joy so joyous.

“The care they took to really get to know her, the details in this pony, it’s as if they sat down with us,” Kelly Kaufman said.

According to Hasbro, the toy has flower and leaf elements in its mane to reflect Maggie Joy’s love of nature and a bandage because she always seemed to have one on her hand. The pony’s “cutie mark,” a mark unique to each My Little Pony that reflects their personality, is a pink heart with sun rays radiating outward to represent Maggie Joy’s love for her family and friends.

Kelly Kaufman says it’s the few good moments, like when the family received Hasbro’s gifts, that have helped her as she grieves her daughter.

“I would trade every single bit of this to have her back for one second, but if this story brings joy or spreads love and kindness, then it will make our grief a little bit better,” she said.

The Kaufmans keep the Maggie Joy pony in their family room. They say they look at the toy whenever they watch TV or spend time together, so now, Maggie Joy can join them, too – if only in memory.

My family loves my fried-egg 'omelets,' and they're surprisingly easier to make than the real thing

  • I came up with my own recipe for fried-egg "omelets," and they're a crowd-pleaser in my house.
  • You can customize each omelet before and during the cooking process .
  • If you accidentally break the yolks, you just end up with fancy scrambled eggs .

Insider Today

Now that eggs are actually affordable again after record-high prices in 2023, they're a staple in my family's diet.

I've been making what I jokingly call my "Patented Fried Egg Omelet" for years now. Although it's entirely likely that someone else is cooking the exact same meal, I've yet to come across it.

They're easy to make, delightful to eat, and an impressive crowd-pleaser.

Here's how I make them.

Most of the ingredients are really up to you.

my family essay lines

The base of the recipe is just two eggs. You could try it with three, but be warned, it may be a harrowing experience.

As for the other ingredients, my favorite combination is chopped bacon , chives or green onions, diced tomatoes, and a sprinkling of cheddar or Mexican-blend cheese.

But you can make a fried-egg omelet with just about anything you want — mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, onions, etc.

I start by prepping the eggs.

my family essay lines

My first big tip is to ensure the yolks stay intact when you crack the eggs. Otherwise, it won't really be a fried egg .

I always crack one egg into my egg cup (yes, I have a dedicated egg cup), then add half of the ingredients that need the least cooking, usually chives and tomatoes.

Then, I add the other egg and the rest of those ingredients. This helps them spread out more evenly across the eggs, though you will have some leeway to maneuver things as the eggs cook.

Before throwing the mixture in a pan, I cook up anything that needs extra time.

my family essay lines

The next secret is timing when each ingredient gets added to the mix.

I add the chopped bacon to the pan first. If you're using onion, bell pepper, or anything that needs a bit of extra time to cook, add that to the heat before the eggs.

I just try to make sure the ingredients in the pan stay rather close together so the omelet can come together.

Once everything's ready, carefully pour the egg mixture into the pan.

my family essay lines

Next, pour the egg mixture on top of the bacon (or onions or what have you).

Then, use a fork or similar implement to carefully distribute the ingredients evenly around the egg whites .

A good, hot pan helps this recipe along — think sizzling-bacon hot, not grease-fire hot.

Let the eggs firm up well before flipping.

my family essay lines

The key to a good fried-egg omelet is not flipping the eggs too soon. I recommend waiting about two minutes.

Flip prematurely, and the eggs will likely lack the structural integrity for a smooth, even flip.

If the half-cooked omelet falls apart, it's basically impossible to repair it. But, you can still mix everything up and turn it into a plate of fancy scrambled eggs, so it's not a total loss.

Using a spatula, carefully free the eggs from the pan by working around the edges, then get the spatula under the eggs and flip them right over.

If everything is successful, the ingredients that were under the eggs should have blended into the whites.

I finish it off with a sprinkle of cheese and serve.

my family essay lines

As soon as the eggs are flipped, I sprinkle cheese on top and let things cook for about a minute. If you like runnier yolks, take it off the heat sooner.

And that's it. You have a perfectly customized fried-egg omelet — or , depending on how things went, a beautiful plate of scrambled eggs.

I typically top mine with pepper and hot sauce and serve it with toast.
