The Ph.D. in Management

Stern’s Ph.D. program in management prepares students to understand how organizations need to compete in challenging and volatile business environments and how managers must manage in complex and changing workplaces. The training is broad based and interdisciplinary, drawing on the fields of economics, psychology, and sociology. Areas of focus within the management doctoral program at Stern include strategy, the study of the competitive dynamics of firm performance; organizational behavior, the study of the behavior of individual employees and managers within organizations; and organization theory, the study of organizational structures and processes.

Main navigation

The PhD program requires three years of full-time graduate study, at least two years of which must be at Stanford. Typically, however, students take four to five years after entering the program to complete all PhD requirements. The University requires a minimum of 135 units for a PhD, up to 45 units of which may be transferred from another graduate program, or used toward a master's degree at Stanford.

Oral examination

Doctoral students are required to take a number of courses, both to pass a qualifying exam in one of these areas, and to complete a dissertation based on research which must make an original contribution to knowledge. The PhD is generally organized around the expectation that the student acquires a certain breadth across all areas of the department, and depth in one area.

The current areas are: Computational Social Science Decision and Risk Analysis Operations Research Organizations, Technology and Entrepreneurship Policy and Strategy Quantitative Finance

Each student admitted to the PhD program must satisfy a breadth requirement.

All first year students are required to attend and participate in MS&E 302 Fundamental Concepts in Management Science and Engineering, which will meet in the Autumn Quarter.

Each course session will be devoted to a specific MS&E PhD research area. At a given session, several advanced PhD students in that area will make carefully prepared presentations designed for first-year doctoral students regardless of area. The presentations will be devoted to: (a) illuminating how people in the area being explored that day think about and approach problems, and (b) illustrating what can and cannot be done when addressing problems by deploying the knowledge, perspectives, and skills acquired by those who specialize in the area in question.

Faculty in the focal area of the week will comment on the student presentations. The rest of the session will be devoted to questions posed and comments made by the first-year PhD students.

During the last two weeks of the quarter groups of first year students will make presentations on how they would approach a problem drawing on two or more of the perspectives to which they have been exposed earlier in the class.

Attendance is mandatory and performance will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the students’ presentations and class participation.

Each student admitted to the PhD program must pass an area qualification procedure. The purpose of the qualification procedure is to assess the student’s command of the field and to evaluate his or her potential to complete a high-quality dissertation in a timely manner. The student must complete specified course work in one of the areas of the department. The qualification decision is based on the student’s coursework and grade point average (GPA), on the one or two preliminary papers prepared by the student with close guidance from two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, the student’s performance in an area examination or defense of the written paper(s), and an overall assessment by the faculty of the student's ability to conduct high-quality PhD research. Considering this evidence, the department faculty will vote on advancing the student to candidacy in the department at large.

The qualification procedure is based on depth in an area of the student’s choice and preparation for dissertation research. The qualification process must be completed by the end of the month of May in the student’s second year of graduate study in the department. The performance of all doctoral students will be reviewed every year at a department faculty meeting at the end of May or beginning of June. PhD qualification decisions will be made at that time and individual feedback will be provided.

The PhD qualification requirements comprise the following elements:

Courses and GPA: Students must complete the depth requirements of one of the areas of the MS&E department. All courses used to satisfy depth requirements must be taken for a letter grade, if the letter-graded option is available. Course substitutions may be approved by the doctoral program advisor or the MS&E dissertation advisor on the candidacy form or on a request for graduate course substitution form. A student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.4 in the set of all courses taken by the student within the department. The GPA will be computed on the basis of the nominal number of units for which each course is offered.

Paper(s): A student may choose between two options. The first option involves one paper supervised by a primary faculty advisor and a second faculty reader. This paper should be written in two quarters. The second option involves two shorter sequential tutorials, with two different faculty advisors. Each tutorial should be completed in one quarter. In both options, the student chooses the faculty advisor(s)/reader with the faculty members’ consent. There must be two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, supervising and evaluating this requirement for advancement to candidacy. The paper/tutorials must be completed before the Spring Quarter of a student’s second year of graduate study in the department if the student’s qualifying exam is during the Spring Quarter, and before the end of May of that year otherwise.

Area qualification: In addition, during the second year, a student must pass an examination in one of the areas of the MS&E department, or defense of the written paper(s). The student chooses the area/program in which to take the examination. This area examination will be written, oral, or both at the discretion of the area faculty administering the exam. Most areas offer the qualifying exam only once per year, which may be early in the second year.

Each doctoral student’s progress is reviewed annually by the MS&E faculty. Typically, this occurs at a faculty meeting at the end of Spring Quarter, and appropriate email notifications are sent over the summer to the students and their advisors. It shall be the responsibility of the student to initiate each required step in completing the PhD program. To maintain good standing in the PhD program,

First year students must: 1. Complete 30 units, including MS&E 302 and doctoral courses taught by faculty in their research area; 2. Develop relationships with faculty members who can potentially serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member. A faculty member is more likely to accept the responsibility of supervising the research of a student whom he or she knows fairly well than a student whose abilities, initiative, and originality the faculty member knows less. It is recommended that students participate in research rotations with MS&E and related faculty to facilitate the development of these relationships.

Second year students must: 1. Complete at least two one-quarter research rotations or tutorials, or one two-quarter research rotation, tutorial, or research paper, continuing to develop relationships with faculty members who might serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member; 2. Pass an area qualifying exam or defense of the written paper(s); 3. Submit a candidacy form signed by at least one MS&E faculty member with whom they have or will complete research rotations, tutorials, or papers, and listing the course requirements agreed upon by both the student and the program advisor; 4. Complete 30 units, including most, if not all, of the required courses listed on the candidacy form; 5. Be advanced to candidacy by the faculty.

Third year students must: 1. Submit a progress form listing the dissertation topic and signed by the dissertation advisor (if the dissertation advisor is not an MS&E faculty member, the form must also be signed by an MS&E faculty member who agrees to be on the student's reading committee, as well as the student's point of contact within the department); 2. Complete 30 units, including any remaining depth courses.

Fourth year students must: 1. Select a reading committee (a dissertation advisor and two readers) with at least one member from the student's major department, and submit the reading committee form signed by each member on the reading committee; 2. Make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor; 3. If the student has not transferred any previous graduate units to Stanford, complete 30 dissertation units.

Students beyond their fourth year must make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor and approved by the faculty. Indeed, the dissertation advisor will have to present the case to (and seek approval for good standing of the student from) the faculty in the annual faculty meeting for student review. It should be noted that each student inherently has to pass the oral examination (see below) and submit their dissertation before their candidacy expires.

Oral Examination

As administered in this department, the University oral examination is a defense of the dissertation; however, the candidate should be prepared to answer any question raised by any members of the Academic Council who choose to be present. The examining committee consists of the three members of the reading committee as well as a fourth faculty member and an orals chair. The chair must be an Academic Council member and may not be affiliated with either the Department of Management Science and Engineering nor any department in which the student's adviser has a regular appointment; emeriti professors are eligible to serve as an orals chair. It is the responsibility of the student's adviser to find an appropriate orals chair. The University oral examination may be scheduled after the dissertation reading committee has given tentative approval to the dissertation.

The student must be enrolled in the quarter of their oral examination. Students should schedule three hours for the oral examination, which usually consists of a 45-minute public presentation, followed by closed-session questioning of the examinee by the committee, and committee deliberation. The student needs to reserve a room, and meet with the student services manager to complete the oral examination schedule and pick up other paper work. This paperwork, along with an abstract, needs to be delivered to the orals chair at least one week prior to the oral examination.

Management PhD Specialization

General information.

The doctoral program in Management offers students an opportunity to pursue advanced study with a diverse group of world-renowned management faculty. Management is an interdisciplinary area, combining the study of organizations with areas such as sociology, economics, and psychology. The study of management involves examination of macro- and micro-level factors that affect organization effectiveness and efficiency.

The management Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students to conduct and publish research in top-tier journals and to take academic positions at leading research-based universities in the United States and abroad. The Ph.D. curriculum in management consists of two major tracks: 1) Strategic Management, and 2) Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management (OB/HRM). A minor is also available for PhD students working in other specialization areas.

Strategic Management track

Organizational behavior and human resource management track, admission requirements.

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree at an accredited university. An admission committee of faculty members reviews all completed applications. While the committee considers all relevant factors in its recommendations, important factors include past academic performance, GMAT scores, and essays. The GRE exam can be substituted for the GMAT but the GMAT is strongly preferred. In some cases we may request a personal interview.

Recommended preparation prior to entry

Students entering the PhD Program as Management majors should be comfortable with the basic concepts of calculus and statistics before they arrive on campus. It is strongly recommended that all new Management majors carefully review this material during the summer before entering the program.

Program timeline

The purpose of this section is to provide an overview of M&O’s PhD program. It does not provide a comprehensive review of all credit hour requirements, etc. Instead it provides a “road map” of topics salient to successfully navigating the program. An overall schedule and major milestones for a five-year [1] program is depicted below.

[1] This is not a statement of financial support. [2] In five years, typical assignment is 3 qrts of fellowship, 2 qrts of teaching and 10 qrts of RA/TA. Summer are RA. [3] Contingent on satisfactory progress in the program.

First and second years Supervisory Committee: Until students establish a supervisory committee by the end of the Spring Quarter of their first year an initial advisor (the department’s Phd coordinator) advises students.  The supervisory committee approves the course of studies, and monitors the student’s progress.

Course work: The total amount of coursework required depends on incoming education and minor tracks selected. However, it is expected that students take the major doctoral seminars offered by the department as well as Research Methods courses. These courses are supplemented by course outside the department and outside the school, e.g., statistics.

Minor area requirements:   Students in management must select “Research Methods” as one of their minor areas.  A second or third minor area will depend on the student’s interest.

1st Year Paper: During the Fall Quarter of the second year, students must present their summer research paper to the management faculty.  In most instances, by this time a student will have formed a Supervisory Committee and will have conferred with them about this presentation.

Major area exams :  The examination will be held in Summer of each year.  This written exam will be scheduled over several days.  The focus per day will be made clear by the committee. One day will be research methods focused, while the other(s) will be theoretical content focused. If the Supervisory Committee believes that the student’s performance was unsatisfactory, the committee may recommend that the student retake the area exams.  If the student successfully passes these exams, then he or she has completed the prelims. In no instance will a student be allowed to remain in the program if the exam is not successfully completed by the end of their third year.

Third, fourth, and fifth years 3rd Year Dissertation Forum: During Spring of your 3rd Year a major presentation will be made to the faculty related to your intended dissertation research.

General exam:   Students who successfully complete the area exams can begin working on a dissertation proposal.  The general exam, also referred to as the “proposal defense” exam, is an oral examination of their dissertation proposal. After the successful completion of this exam the student enters “Candidacy.”  The oral exam in structured such that the student presents their dissertation research to their committee for approval.

Reading Committee: At this point, a student may reconstitute his/her Supervisory Committee and must select his/her Reading Committee, which is usually a subsection of the Supervisory Committee.  In practice, the chair of the student’s Supervisory Committee usually becomes the chair of the Reading Committee.  The Reading Committee may consist entirely of members of the Supervisory Committee or may include one or more members not previously on the Supervisory Committee.  The Graduate School appoints an outside member to the Reading Committee.  The student’s Reading Committee administers the final defense of a student’s dissertation.  With the successful completion of the dissertation defense and submission of the dissertation to the graduate school a student will have completed all the requirements for a Ph.D.

Course planning

Strategic Management track: First, the core of the program is a “five+one” major area doctoral seminar sequence. The “five” are Economic Foundations, Sociological Foundations, Contemporary Strategy, Theoretical Foundations of Entrepreneurship, and Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. The “plus one” requirement is chosen from the doctoral seminars in the OB/HRM track. Secondly, you will have two minors, including research methods and a complementary area, such as Economics, Sociology, or Political Science.

OB/HRM track: First, the core of the program is a “four+one” major area doctoral seminar sequence. The “four” include the three required – Psychological Foundations, Social Processes, and Contemporary OB – while you choose one of the two Special Topics. The “plus one” requirement is chosen from the doctoral seminars in the Strategic Management track. Secondly, you will have two minors, including research methods and a complementary area, such as Psychology.

Course descriptions

MGT 580 Psychological Foundations of Organizational Behavior The goal of this class is an introduction to a broad range of topics that are commonly seen as “on the micro side” of organizational behavior (OB).  The expectation for 580 is not expertise on these selected OB topics, but instead, the hope is to spark interest in one or more of these topics.  Topics include but are not limited to: voluntary employee turnover; personality and other individual differences; beliefs, attitudes and intentions; fairness, justice & voice; goals, feedback seeking and power; self-theories, fit, socialization, and climate and culture; organizational citizenship behaviors, job design, counter work behavior and creativity; and psychological contracts, stress and well-being.  The short term goal is to prepare you for the OB area exam, but the long term goal is to generate substantial excitement such that your dissertation topic and/or one or more publications emerge from this class.

MGT 581 Social Processes in Organizations The purpose of the course is to review the literature on social processes, groups, and teams, focusing on their applications in organizational settings. This course focuses on important group processes for organizational effectiveness. It covers concepts such as composition, diversity, conflict, affect, decision making, and motivation. Class meetings will consist of brief overviews of selected topics (carried out by us jointly) and discussions of these topics with a focus on: (1) understanding the existing theory and research, and (2) developing research ideas that can and should be done to further our knowledge about a topic.

MGT 583 Special Topics OB I The purpose of this course is to review the major theories of leadership and their applications in both research and in practice. Although the primary focus of this seminar is on examining the ‘science of leadership’, in each class, we will also discuss the application of this science in practice covering a vast array of leadership roles or loci in organizations including shared and strategic.

MGT 584 Special Topics in OB II In recent years, scholars have employed an ever-widening array of perspectives to understand and predict individual ethical behavior in organizations. This course provides an overview of these perspectives and helps the student to better evaluate and conduct research related to individual ethical behavior in organizations.

MGT 590 Economic Foundations of Strategy This course will review theories either derived from economics, or grounded in economic concepts, that are utilized in the field of strategic management. Each student will be expected to come to class prepared to summarize (1) one important research paper or book chapter per session and (2) one empirical paper pertaining to the topic discussed on that day. The summaries must be presented as a power point presentation. The power point presentations and relevant empirical papers must be uploaded into the shared drop box folder. We will decide prior to each class which theoretical reading each student will summarize. You are expected to search the literature to find relevant empirical papers. The empirical papers can be drawn from management or economics journals.  Grades will be based on the quality of your summaries of theoretical and empirical papers.

MGT 591 Sociological Foundations of Strategy This course is an introduction to the major theoretical approaches and ongoing debates within the areas of organization theory and organizational sociology. Organizational theory draws on several different disciplinary roots, but the major focus of this course will be work on the sociology of organizations.  The substantive focus of the course will be explaining the origins, persistence, and disappearance of institutional structures that order economic life (organizations, firms, networks, markets, etc.).

Although this course is meant as an overview of the field of organizational theory and organizational sociology, we do not spend much time on the historical and classic statements of the field (e.g., Weber, Simon, March, Thompson). Rather, we will focus on the major contemporary schools or perspectives within the field, moving in roughly temporal order. The major topic areas we cover include resource dependence, organizational ecology, institutional theory, network theory, social movements theory, and theories of categories and classification.

ENTRE 581 Theoretical Foundations of Entrepreneurship This Ph.D. seminar introduces students to the major theoretical threads and controversies in the entrepreneurship. The course focuses on theory building and empirical testing of the factors shaping the identification, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities and the creation of new organizations. It highlights various theoretical perspectives, examines different methodologies, and explores empirical research in entrepreneurship. It emphasizes current research in entrepreneurship – what are researchers talking about today and where will the field likely be headed in the future?

ENTRE 582 Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship This doctoral seminar provides an introduction to the phenomenon of innovation from the strategic management perspective. Overall the emphasis is on understanding the main theories of innovation, synthesizing research in this area, and understanding how to design and write compelling research. Students will develop skills to both appreciate and construct empirical research designs and submit weekly writing assignments and a term paper focused on the innovation literature we read, as well as developing their own research ideas related to innovation.

BARM 590 Behavioral R.M. Theory and Design BARM 590 is an introduction to research methods in the behavioral areas commonly found in a business school.  The mega goal for this class is to begin an appreciation of the research process.  The more specific goals are to: prepare you for BARM 591; begin the long journey of learning how to conduct research; and understand specific methods in the many substantive research articles that you will read in your classes, in preparing for the area exam and across your career.  By the end of BARM 590, you should feel comfortable with the vocabulary and general areas of research methods.  You may feel uncomfortable, however, with the many details of conducting research.  Such comfort evolves over the first two years in the program (and across the career).

BARM 591 Behavioral R.M. Approaches and Application This course will introduce students to a variety of techniques and considerations important in analyzing multivariate data in organizational research.  Students will be exposed to descriptive and inferential multivariate methods and will learn about their underlying assumptions, correct usage, and proper interpretation.  Students will gain experience through a variety of problems, critiques, and data analysis projects.  Critiques are primarily based on articles published in the Academy of Management Journal , so students will also attain a high degree of familiarity with articles published in that journal and the norms associated with that journal. There are also a few articles from psychology, strategy, and education journals.

The course will be taught in a seminar setting and will also have a significant hands-on component.  At the beginning of each session, we will be discussing the articles that you will have read for the day. These have been chosen to highlight various flaws in design and to highlight statistical techniques. A lot can be learned by observing the weaknesses of various attempts at research. You should come prepared with comments and questions.  You should be ready to discuss each article and be able to compare and contrast the articles in terms of methodology.  During the second half of most sessions, I will be asking you to analyze a data set using the techniques we have learned.  We will be doing this together as a class.  There will be no curve for this course—thus there is every reason to help and learn from each other.

Who is a typical Foster Management PhD Student? A Foster Management PhD student is intellectually curious, values academic freedom, and is passionate about contemporary management issues. You can build an exciting career involving research, publishing, teaching, and academic leadership. A foster Management Ph.D. student is NOT interested in pursuing a non-academic career, such as a consultant or corporate executive.

Who does well in the PhD program? Students who are self-motivated, creative, and excited about learning on the job tend to do better in our program than students who like prescribed structure to their work. Our students are interested in actively collaborating with faculty members to conduct cutting-edge research and publish their research findings in top-tier journals. In addition to fellowships, we provide financial support in the form of research and teaching assistantships that often result in research collaborations with students as co-authors. These early projects have traditionally helped our doctoral candidates pursue careers as faculty members at major universities in the United States and abroad.

What’s the background of PhD students? Holding a business degree is NOT a requirement for being considered for our PhD program. We frequently accept students with diverse backgrounds – economics, sociology, psychology, engineering, statistics, mathematics and other natural sciences. Our program is geared towards providing training for skills that students need to succeed in their careers.

What does it take to get in? Our admission decisions are based on many criteria, including test scores (GMAT or GRE of over 80th percentile; over the 90 th percentile is common), letters of recommendation, and prior academic performance. Once you join the program, we work hard to ensure that you succeed in completing your degree, and getting a faculty position at a research university.

What is the mission of the PhD program in Management? The mission of our PhD program is to ensure that our graduates earn tenure at peer institutions.

What are the concentrations offered? Our students select one of the three concentrations offered by the Department: Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management, and Technology Entrepreneurship.

When is the application deadline? The deadline to apply is December 15th.

What are the documents that I need to submit?

  • Fill out the application online
  • Transcripts of all college or university level courses, degrees and diplomas
  • Three letters of recommendation. These could be from professors, supervisors, employers or colleagues
  • Official Test Scores for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT-code: 459-75-53) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE-code: 4854). If you are an international applicant, you need official test scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • A personal statement/essay that clearly describes how a Foster PhD degree in Management fits with your career goals

Do you prefer GMAT or GRE scores? Either is acceptable. The GMAT code for the PhD Program is 459-75-53 and the GRE code is 4854.

Is there a minimum test score requirement? No; however, typically the admitted students have scores in the 80th – 100th percentile range. 90 th and above is common.

I’ve already taken the GMAT/GRE; should I consider re-taking it? You will need to re-take the test if your test result is over five years old. You can choose to retake the test if you feel that test score does not provide a reasonable evidence of your ability. We will base our judgment on your application on the most recent score provided to us.

Do you have a minimum grade point average? Yes, the minimum GPA is 3.0. We particularly focus on courses and degrees that are directly connected to your intended area of specialization. While evaluating prior academic performance, we take several other factors into consideration, including the quality of the institution, their grading standards, and the overall trajectory of your grades.

Do I need to have an MBA or some other masters degree? No. Even though most of our students have done some graduate-level work, we are open to considering students with undergraduate degree if they can demonstrate ability to undertake doctoral work either through their prior professional experience, or participation in research activity. We do recognize that some basic familiarity with statistics can be helpful in navigating the first year of the program.

How long is the PhD Program? There is no strictly prescribed duration for the PhD program. The number of years that students take depends on their background, their willingness to work hard, and some external factors (e.g. access to dissertation data). Most of our doctoral students complete their degree in 4 to 6 years. 5 years is most common.

Do you have a part-time program? No. Our program requires all the students to be residence full-time. Since the program places significant demands on students’ time and efforts, we do not encourage students to accept other employment.

How long does it take for students to complete their coursework? Most students finish their coursework in the first two years.

What are some of the requirements for the doctorate other than course work? In addition to course work, students are required to write a summer research paper at the end of the first year in the Program. Students must pass a comprehensive examination at the end of their second year. Students also need to pass a dissertation proposal defense, and final dissertation defense in order to graduate.

How do individuals support themselves while completing the PhD Program? All the students receive financial support that includes a full tuition waiver, and a stipend to cover the living costs. This stipend is offered in the form of assistantship (research assistantship or assistantship), or fellowship. The support is typically available for the entire duration of the program, depending on satisfactory progress toward degree completion.

How do I earn an assistantship? Students are required to perform 20 hours of research or teaching duties as instructed by the designated faculty advisors. These assignments serve the dual purpose of students earning their stipends by assisting faculty members, and, at the same time, gaining insights into the process of doing research and teaching classes. While students initially serve as apprentices to faculty members, eventually, they are given responsibility for teaching two undergraduate courses independently.

As research assistants, students are expected to do literature review, data collection, statistical analysis, and writing up results. These duties often end up offering valuable educational experiences to students and sometimes pave the way for dissertation research or co-authored articles.

How do students receive health insurance? All the students admitted to the program automatically receive University-paid health insurance.

How much tuition do doctoral students have to pay? None. As long as students are making progress toward their degree, and fulfilling their assistantship duties, they receive full tuition remission.

How many courses do students take in a quarter? During the first two years of the program, most students take between 3-4 courses.

Do students receive credit for previous course work? Only if they satisfy the program requirement. Prior masters level coursework, such as MBA courses, usually can NOT be applied toward the doctoral degree.

I am an international student. Do I need to submit a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score? Do I need to submit a TSE (Test of Spoken English) score? All the international students are required to submit a TOEFL score, unless they submit transcripts showing that they earned a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited university in the United States or other English speaking countries and regions, such as Canada, Australia, the UK, or New Zealand. Students are not required to submit a TSE score as the TSE may be taken at the beginning of the doctoral program.

Students need to have an overall TOEFL score of 95 or higher. Please note that TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

How many students are admitted into the PhD program each year? On average, two students are admitted in Organizational Behavior and two in Strategy and Technology Entrepreneurship.

Do I need to have a clearly defined topic of research at the time of application? No. Most students enter the program without a clear research agenda and discover their research interests during the program. While it can be helpful for students to know their interests and goals, it is perhaps more important that students join the program with an open mind and show the willingness to explore new areas and topics. One of the key goals of the program is to help students develop an understanding of what is known in one’s area of study, and what questions are worth pursuing.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
  • Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

No, you need the Master in Research in Management (MRM) or equivalent in any case. Your MBA is a professional degree but does not give you the necessary background for doing research.

Our Master in Research in Management (MRM) and PhD Programs require full-time dedication onsite here in Barcelona.

No,  GMAT  (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)  are required for all the applicants.

Tests  taken more than five years prior  to date of entry will not be accepted.

Results should be sent directly from the test agency, using IESE’s code: S21-BK-53 for GMAT and 3607 for GRE.

Visa requirements vary depending on the country where the program is located, and on the nationality of individual students.

The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Announcements, deadline extended to 29 january 2024, for doctoral programme admissions, ph.d. experiences, my two years journey at iim ahmedabad has been very rewarding. professors, here, are very knowledgeable and supportive. there are abundant research opportunities with hundreds of research seminars occurring every year. campus has excellent infrastructure including classes, sports facilities, hostels and the library is probably the best in india with plethora of resources. ph.d. office, library and administration staff is also very friendly and cooperative. apart from academics, there are plenty of avenues to explore cultural and sports interests..

Ph.D. Programme in Management at IIMA consists of 11 different areas of high levels of specialization of Management. It prepares students to pursue a career, which requires high scholastic aptitude and academic research. The programme is primarily designed to help students seek research careers in academia or elsewhere.

What is the average completing time for the Ph.D. Programme in Management?

The average completion time is between four to five years.

Is it possible to complete the Ph.D. programme on a part-time basis?

No. However, a student may seek employment at the end of four and a half years with the concurrence of his / her thesis advisory committee and Ph.D. Programme Chair.

Who should apply? What are the typical backgrounds of Ph.D. students?

Ph.D. programme looks for highly motivated students interested in pursuing research careers in high levels of specialization requiring high scholastic aptitude. Typical students have varied backgrounds. Please follow the link to know about backgrounds of current students.

What are the qualities which IIMA is looking for in applicants to the program?

The Programme looks for highly motivated and disciplined candidates with strong academic preparation who exhibit curiosity, desire to learn, and have an inclination towards high levels of specialized research.

How will I sustain myself for 4-5 years, if I have a family?

IIMA provides sufficient fellowship (including fees, boarding, lodging and stipend) for five years to doctoral students. Please refer later section for details.

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

How do I apply? What is the process of admission to the programme? Where can I get the forms? Can I apply online?

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests ( CAT / GATE / UGC JRF / GMAT / GRE / ICAR-SRF)

What are the important deadlines?

Last Date for Ph.D. Programme Application: January 17, 2023 Interview dates (Tentative) - March/April, 2023, Joining dates – May/June 2023

What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

The key stages are

1. First year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses and some recommended PGP course/s),

2. Second year coursework in area of high levels of specialization,

3. Area comprehensive examination,

4. Thesis Proposal defense,

5. Thesis seminar,

6. Thesis defense

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. Details are available in the Ph.D. Programme manual.

How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

What support is available for presenting research papers in indian and international conferences.

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

How do I find a job, after completing my Ph.D. studies?

Jobs depend on a student's competence and high level of specialization achieved during the programme. There are recruiters coming to the campus, faculty advisors provide references, and also through other informal/formal channels.

Writing helps you share your work with the wider community. Your scholarship is important and you are making a valuable contribution to the field. While it might be intimidating to face a blank screen, remember, your first draft is not your final draft! The difficult part is getting something on the page to begin with. 

As the adage goes, a good dissertation is a done dissertation, and the goal is for you to find balance in your writing and establish the steps you can take to make the process smoother. Here are some practical strategies for tackling the PhD dissertation.

Write daily

This is a time to have honest conversations with yourself about your writing and work habits. Do you tackle the most challenging work in the morning? Or do you usually start with emails? Knowing your work routine will help you set parameters for the writing process, which includes various elements, from brainstorming ideas to setting outlines and editing. Once you are aware of your energy and focus levels, you’ll be ready to dedicate those times to writing.

While it might be tempting to block a substantial chunk of time to write and assume anything shorter is not useful, that is not the case. Writing daily, whether it’s a paragraph or several pages, keeps you in conversation with your writing practice. If you schedule two hours to write, remember to take a break during that time and reset. You can try:

  • The Pomodoro Technique: a time management technique that breaks down your work into intervals
  • Taking breaks: go outside for a walk or have a snack so you can come back to your writing rejuvenated
  • Focus apps: it is easy to get distracted by devices and lose direction. Here are some app suggestions: Focus Bear (no free version); Forest (free version available); Cold Turkey website blocker (free version available) and Serene (no free version). 

This is a valuable opportunity to hone your time management and task prioritisation skills. Find out what works for you and put systems in place to support your practice.

  • What is your academic writing temperament?

Create a community

While writing can be an isolating endeavour, there are ways to start forming a community (in-person or virtual) to help you set goals and stay accountable. There might be someone in your cohort who is also at the writing stage with whom you can set up a weekly check-in. Alternatively, explore your university’s resources and centres because there may be units and departments on campus that offer helpful opportunities, such as a writing week or retreat. Taking advantage of these opportunities helps combat isolation, foster accountability and grow networks. They can even lead to collaborations further down the line.

  • Check in with your advisers and mentors. Reach out to your networks to find out about other people’s writing processes and additional resources.
  • Don’t be afraid to share your work. Writing requires constant revisions and edits and finding people who you trust with feedback will help you grow as a writer. Plus, you can also read their work and help them with their editing process.
  • Your community does not have to be just about writing!  If you enjoy going on hikes or trying new coffee shops, make that part of your weekly habit.  Sharing your work in different environments will help clarify your thoughts and ideas.

Address the why

The PhD dissertation writing process is often lengthy and it is sometimes easy to forget why you started. In these moments, it can be helpful to think back to what got you excited about your research and scholarship in the first place. Remember it is not just the work but also the people who propelled you forward. One idea is to start writing your “acknowledgements” section. Here are questions to get you started:

  • Do you want to dedicate your work to someone? 
  • What ideas sparked your interest in this journey? 
  • Who cheered you on? 

This practice can help build momentum, as well as serve as a good reminder to carve out time to spend with your community. 

You got this!

Writing is a process. Give yourself grace, as you might not feel motivated all the time. Be consistent in your approach and reward yourself along the way. There is no single strategy when it comes to writing or maintaining motivation, so experiment and find out what works for you.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Career Resource Center — an exclusive resource for nearly 4,000 students in the University at Buffalo School of Management — hosted a celebration at The Mansion on Delaware Ave. on May 8 to honor several recruiting and internship partners for their considerable impact on student success and career development.

Caroline Organ, MBA ’07, chief human resources officer at Brock, Schechter & Polakoff LLP was named CRC Alumnus of the Year for her dedication and support of students’ professional and career development, and for her deep involvement with the school. Championing UB within her firm for more than 15 years, Organ and members of her team engage in panel discussions, networking events, programs in collaboration with the UB Accounting Association and Beta Alpha Psi, and more.

Carey Petruso, group talent manager, Enterprise Mobility and Jody Giarrusso, talent acquisition manager, Enterprise Mobility were named Recruiting Partners of the Year for their commitment to promoting a strong recruiting partnership with the school.

On the internship side, the CRC honored two pairs of Interns and Supervisors of the Year. The awards recognize productive, meaningful collaborations between students and their mentors — and are chosen based on their nominations of one another. Interns often write about how they grew professionally by completing challenging assignments and hearing about their supervisor’s career path. Meanwhile, supervisors frequently share how impressed they were with their intern’s work, dedication and integrity.

This year’s Interns and Supervisors of the Year were: Claire Ritchie, BS ’24, and Melissa Boland, BS ’07, owner, Casa Bella Management LLC; and Akshay Prabhakar Koltewar, MBA ’24, and James Luciani, associate director of business reporting, Linde.

West Herr Automotive Group was recognized as 2024’s Outstanding Internship Organization for the design, breadth and depth of internship opportunities as well as the quality of learning objectives and mentoring provided to students. Since the start of West Herr’s Internship Experience Program in 2023, 16 students have interned and multiple students hired into part-time roles. Mary Borgognoni, director of internships and career development, and Scott Bieler, president, West Herr Automotive Group, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“Students described our partners at West Herr Automotive Group as welcoming, informative, supportive, and interested in their success, from training to completion,” says Carrie Gardner, director of internships and experiential learning in the School of Management.

Techtronic Industries was honored with the New Recruiting Organization of the Year award for the organization’s dedication to the recruitment of students and alumni as well as their commitment to building a strong partnership with the UB School of Management. Representatives are a regular presence in the school for information sessions, on-campus interviews, working with student clubs and more. James Burke, territory manager, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
