Why Choose Manchester for a Remote Pharm.D.?

We’re proud to offer a remote learning opportunity that brings you all the flexibility of asynchronous classes as well as experiential learning that prepares you to thrive in a pharmacy career. Some of the unique benefits of our online pharmacy program include:

Flexible, asynchronous learning

We created this course to fill a need for an asynchronous and remote pharmacy program.

Our asynchronous program allows you to study while accommodating your existing commitments.

Courses are also spread out across the whole year instead of only two semesters, which means you have a lighter course load for your first two years.

Support for remote clinical experience

Clinical experiences are essential for training as a pharmacist, but you don’t have to move to Fort Wayne for them. You can complete your experiential learning right in your own community by submitting locations near you for approval as clinical sites.

Access to on-campus labs

All students have access to our pharmacy labs, even remote learners. Once a year you’ll have the opportunity to travel to campus, form connections with peers and professors, and get hands-on experience gaining the lab skills necessary for modern pharmacists.

Faculty support

Our remote learning students have access to the same expert faculty as every other student. Plus, you’ll spend a month working closely with a professor in person during your fourth year as part of your sequence of advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs).

Meet your professors

Even if you're not attending classes in-person, you’re still a part of our MU community. You’ll have full access to all of our support services, including career counseling and peer mentoring. Student groups are also available to you, and meetings are held in a hybrid manner so you can participate.

4 Top Online PhD Degrees’ in Pharmacology

Earning one of the 4 Top Online Ph.D. Degree’s in Pharmacology positions you for many new career options. Currently, pharmacists work in many locations, including in community pharmacies, government agencies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, hospice care, in medical and scientific publishing, and much, much more.

A Pharmacology Ph.D. makes you more competitive, qualifies you for these upper-level positions, and can even help you to earn a higher salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , pharmacologists earned a median salary of $126,120 in 2018, and the need for pharmacists is expected to grow by about 6% between 2016 and 2026.

The following 4 Top Online Ph.D. Degrees’ in Pharmacology programs can help you to earn your degree remotely, positioning you for these valuable career opportunities.

FINDING AN ONLINE PH.D. IN PHARMACOLOGY

Working full-time and balancing an education isn’t easy, especially if you also have family and other scheduling commitments. You may not be able to make a traditional class schedule fit around your existing schedule, and that’s why online Ph.D.s’ in Pharmacology are so helpful. These degree programs allow you to study mostly in the comfort of your own home. You can often log in at whatever times are convenient for you, making it much easier to balance your schoolwork with your schedule. Because pharmacology degrees are offered only by some universities and colleges, the ability to study online can make your Ph.D. much more accessible than it would be otherwise.

The 4 Best Online Ph.D.s’ in Pharmacology primarily consists of online coursework. However, because most of these programs require experiential training and labwork components, some travel to campus may be required. Travel is minimal and condensed to intensive sessions which often take place during the summer, but be sure to consider the cost and commitment of these on-campus sessions when deciding whether a program is right for your needs. You should also familiarize yourself with how the coursework is provided online, including whether sessions are synchronous, asynchronous, or both. These programs are all created for students who are working professionals, so they offer the flexibility that most adult learners require.

RANKING THE 4 TOP ONLINE PH.D.S’ IN PHARMACOLOGY

While you’re on your way to earning your Ph.D. or Doctorate within your field, the editors at Online PhD Programs are already practicing doctors of their craft: ranking the best online Ph.D. programs. To be featured on our annual rankings online doctorates must satisfy four coinciding requirements: accreditation, research and scholarship doctorate certification, NSF recognition, and institutional association with peer-reviewed academia.

Each degree is then ranked using the information provided – primarily – through the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook . The data collected is scored through a series of weighted categories to represent seven crucial aspects of what makes an online doctorate valuable to future students. Online program quality and presence are joined by industry salaries, student reviews, degree exclusivity, costs, and completion rates to determine the best online doctorates available. For a comprehensive breakdown of how we categorize and source data, please visit our methodology page.

#1. CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY

Creighton University is home to one of the top pharmacy programs in the country and offers two pathways that lead to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree . Students may pursue an on-campus entry-level pathway, but the university also offers an accredited Distance Pathway that allows students to study online. This Distance Pathway was first introduced in 2001, and its innovative design means that distance students cover the same material that on-campus students study. Through the Distance Pathway, students interact with faculty through web conferencing, discussion boards, email, phone, and more. Some of the didactic portions of the degree take place via synchronous/live sessions, and students attend two- to four-week on-campus sessions during the summer to complete laboratory courses. Additionally, students complete eight five-week clinical rotations, and clinical rotation sites are offered in several locations throughout the country and internationally to accommodate distance learning students.

The U.S. News & World Report ranked Creighton as the #3 private pharmacy school in the United States. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, the School of Pharmacy was founded in 1905 and has since then become an innovator in education and distance learning opportunities. Creighton offers a quality education rooted in the Jesuit tradition, and a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio means that faculty can support and interact with students. Even better, Creighton’s 3:1 student-to-faculty clinical ratio means that students receive plenty of individualized attention in clinical settings. Format: Online

#2. UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER

The University of Colorado Denver offers an online Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program with two pathways – one for North American Trained students, and one for international students. The North American-Trained PharmD Program is designed for working pharmacists licensed within the United States or Canada. Students participate in didactic courses offered online. The program also requires experiential training, and students often meet this requirement with a combination of live rotations and with credit that they may receive from previous work. This program does not require students to visit the campus, making it ideal for students living throughout the United States. Alternatively, the International-Trained PharmD Program is intended for pharmacists licensed outside of the United States. While the program is mostly distance-based, it does require students to travel to campus periodically. Students must complete their experiential training through rotations within the United States.

CU Denver offers over 100 academic degrees including 52 master’s and 13 doctoral degrees, as well as many certificate programs. Students at CU Denver participate in more than 700 internships every year, and of the more than 94,000 alumni, two-thirds of them remain in Colorado. The CU Anschutz Medical Campus is located in Aurora and offers over 40 different degree programs through its six schools and colleges including the School of Medicine and College of Nursing. Today, the Medical Campus serves 4,500 students each year. In the fiscal year of 2018, the Medical Campus received $500 million in research awards, resulting in a $5.8 billion economic impact on the state of Colorado. Format: Online

#3. HOWARD UNIVERSITY

At Howard University, practicing pharmacists can enroll in a Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) program . This unique and innovative program allows students to take courses online at a pace that works for them. Thanks to a fast track option, students may complete the program in just two years, compared to the four or five years that traditional programs often require. Only two campus visits are required during the program, and the cost of this degree is competitive when compared to other non-traditional pharmacy programs. Faculty and students interact through the internet, and students are admitted once each fall in cohorts, allowing them to progress through the program in a supportive cohort.

Located in Washington, DC, Howard University was founded in 1876. Today, this research university consists of 13 schools and colleges offering over 120 fields of study. The university is home to over 9,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students hailing from all 50 states and 66 countries. The Howard University Hospital, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and Nursing and Allied Health Sciences make up the Howard University Health Sciences division and give students valuable hands-on experience. The university also leads in STEM education, since the National Science Foundation recognized Howard University as being the top producer of African-American undergraduates who then pursue and attain doctoral degrees in science and engineering.

Distance PharmD Curriculum Sample

This course introduces the basic principles of physical pharmacy and pharmaceutics. The course integrates the principles of physical pharmacy with dosage forms (pharmaceutics) and the use of dosage forms in pharmacy practice. The course correlates physical pharmacy, pharmaceutical, and biopharmaceutical principles with product design and preparation. (4 credits)

This laboratory course will reinforce the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process approach by preparing students to apply clinical assessment and therapeutic management skills in the treatment of one or more disease states, including the demonstration of medication administration and therapeutic monitoring techniques, assessment and management of comorbid conditions, effective sourcing, application and communication of drug information, and the development of the soft skills necessary for effective patient counseling and education. The course may also include case-based sessions and the introduction of new material as appropriate to the learning session. (1 credit)

This course requires the student to demonstrate mastery of essential knowledge and skills necessary for the completion of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Rotations (APPEs) in the fourth professional year. Activities for this course will include, but are not limited to, topic discussions, patient case simulations, communication simulations with patients and other healthcare personnel, topic/case presentations, drug information questions, and journal clubs. Successful completion of the course requires the student to achieve competency on a variety of written knowledge assessments as well as verbal and written objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). (5 credits)

Rotations for the pharmacy practice experience include a required two-month rotation each for advanced institutional/general medicine and ambulatory/advanced community pharmacy, one required two-month special populations rotation (e.g., geriatrics, pediatrics, critical care) and three months of rotations chosen from a list of electives. Some possibilities for one-month elective rotations include nuclear pharmacy, toxicology, neonatology, cardiology, drug information, compounding, and infectious disease. Each course may be completed only once for credit. (4 credits)

Sarah Zimmerli pharmacy student candidate university of findlay

I would advise all pharmacy students to get involved in pharmacy organizations. There are many ways you can grow as a student pharmacist, such as through making connections, growing in leadership, and showing your dedication to the profession of pharmacy. I was able to meet many upperclassmen in pharmacy who serve as role models for me, and I learned a lot from working alongside them in my organizations.

Sarah Zimmerli , Pharmacy Student Candidate Class of '26

Katie Harris, Pharmacy Student Candidate Class of '24 University of Findlay

I never expected to be close to the other students in my pharmacy class as well as the professors. During the school year, however, I consider my pharmacy class to be a second family. The professors truly care about the students and want us to be successful .

Katie Harris , Class of '24 University of Findlay

Kyle Dresbach

My education at Findlay paved the way for me to enjoy an amazing experience in the Air Force, serve our veterans in the VA hospital settings, and on to my current position, helping millions of patients to be able to afford their medications.

Experiential Learning in Online Pharmacy School

What is experiential learning.

Experiential learning is the practice component of the University of Findlay’s Distance PharmD program, where you participate in interactive learning experiences under the supervision of a PharmD preceptor in your community to develop and refine practical pharmacy competencies.

What are Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE)?

During the program's first three years, you will complete 300 hours (100 each year) of supervised and structured training in a clinical setting with a licensed pharmacist. These guided experiences follow standard U.S. practice models and help you gain confidence while building practical pharmaceutical and patient-focused communication skills.

What are Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)?

In the program's final year, you will complete at least 1,440 advanced, experiential-based learning hours. An assigned preceptor directs these experiences at a designated site near you. A minimum of 160 hours must be completed in each of the ACPE-required APPE areas, including community practice, ambulatory patient care, hospital/health system pharmacy, and inpatient general medicine. The remaining hours include specialty and elective areas.

Where will my experiential learning rotations take place?

Findlay’s placement team helps you find experiential learning sites and preceptors within driving distance of your residence. The practical experience you’ll gain during your IPPE and APPE hours complements classroom learning and prepares you to develop and refine practical pharmacy competencies.

How do I benefit from Findlay’s experiential learning support services?

Finding preceptors and sites near you for your experiential learning rotations can be time-consuming. We manage the logistics of this process so that you can focus on your education and the competencies you need to become an accomplished pharmacist.

Creighton university.

Doctor of Pharmacy

About Creighton University: Located in Omaha, Nebraska on a 140-acre campus, Creighton University is a Jesuit, Roman Catholic, private, coeducational founded by the Society of Jesus in 1878. The university is one of 28-member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

The university is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is Nebraska’s largest private religious university. The school has a student body of over 8,000 students and among many sections includes the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions.

Program Standouts: Creighton University ranks third in the nation among private pharmacy schools (U.S. News & World Report) and is, also, one of the leading pharmacy programs in the country. They pride themselves on being pioneers in the healthcare field by offering an innovative way to achieve a Doctor of Pharmacy degree online.

The focus of the Pharm.D. program centers around the innovative side of today’s pharmaceutical needs including medication therapy management and the patients’ care, counseling, monitoring, and evaluations.

Creighton’s Distance Pathway paves the way for the online student to attend full-time in obtaining their Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Covering the same classroom material as their traditional campus program, the Distance pathway, which started in 2001, offers flexibility and is taught on a semester basis. Interactions with the faculty are held via email, telephone, discussion boards, web conferencing, as well as other media communications.

Keep in mind that some portions of the Distance Pathway are completed on campus, such as lab courses during two to four-week sessions held during the summertime. Also, you will be expected to attend “live” lectures.

According to Creighton’s website, “The clinical component of the distance pharmacy pathway is the same as the campus pharmacy pathway. A total of eight five-week clinical rotations are required, five of which are in required subject areas, with the remaining three in elective subject areas.

These unpaid clinical rotations provide experience in actual pharmacy practice. Sites for clinical rotations are available in a variety of locations throughout the country and internationally.”

Campus Location: Omaha, NE

Accreditation: Higher Learning Commission (HLC)

  • a completed online application,
  • official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions visited,
  • two letters of recommendation,
  • and official Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) scores.
  • Patient Assessment
  • Chemical Basis of Drug Action
  • Pharmacotherapeutics

According to students who have attended the Distance Pathway for Creighton’s Doctor of Pharmacy, this program is not taught in an “at your own pace” type delivery method. For example, if on-campus students have a test on X day, distance students have a test on that same day, however, you may typically watch lectures on your own time.

Exams, quizzes, assignments, etc. are all due at the same time as those attending the brick and mortar counterpart. The curriculum is designed to be three years didactic and not anticipated to move faster than intended.

Howard university.

Doctor of Pharmacy

About Howard University:

Howard University is located in Washington, D.C., and is traditional, since its inception, a nonsectarian school open to students of all races and genders.

Howard is classified as a Tier 1 national university and is placed highly on a plethora of impressive rankings reports, including U.S. News and World Report, Bloomberg Businessweek, and The Princeton Review to name a few. Howard University’s College of Pharmacy is one of the oldest and top technologically advanced online pharmacy schools in the United States.

A fun fact is that in 2011, Howard was named the second best-dress college in the nation by the Huffington Post! Another very interesting fact is that the most black doctorate recipients of any non-profit university are produced by Howard University.

Needless to say, students attending Howard, either online or on-campus, are part of a hugely successful path of others just like them working towards their career goals and dreams.

The success of their traditional on-campus program led to the development of what they coin as their Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) Program which is designed specifically for practicing pharmacists.

One of the biggest standouts of this university is that the program is designed to be completed in two years, however, a student who is admitted to the online program has a maximum of five years from the initial date of enrollment to complete the program and receive the Pharm. D. degree.

This flexibility allows for “life” to happen and for you to complete their pharmacy degrees (doctorate) program on your time. There are required visits highlighted below in the “Class Structure” section.

Campus Location: Washington, D.C.

Total Credits Required to Complete the Program: 65 credits

  • a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy
  • a valid US Pharmacy License,
  • complete the Professional Study and Supplemental Application forms, as well as, all other required documentation.
  • Applied Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacogenomics
  • Biostatistics and Biotechnology
  • Patient Assessment I & II

Class Structure:

With these pharmacy degrees, you may only enroll in the fall of each year and the curriculum is set in phases… I, II, and III. There are two times it is mandatory to make a campus visit. These are called “Executive Weekend Seminars” The first weekend is held at the very beginning of the first semester and is intended to orient the students to the hows, whens, and whys of the program.

A few weeks later, the second Executive Weekend is scheduled. Phase I is a two-month orientation that includes the first and second Executive Weekend Seminar, the second phase is a 16-month course of study divided into three semesters, and the final Phase III is a 6-week experiential component.

According to Howard’s website, “The Howard University Non-traditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTDP) program normally requires two years to complete. Pharmacists are admitted once a year as members of a cohort. Cohorts consist of not geographically bounded pharmacists who joined the program at the same time and will progress through it at the same pace.”

Distance Education Pathway

Four year online distance education pathway, earn your pharmd degree in four-years through our online distance education pathway..

The LECOM School of Pharmacy Distance Education Pathway curriculum is a four-year, online Doctor of Pharmacy degree program for US Citizens or US Permanent Residents (F1 Visa Holders do not qualify). The administration and faculty continuously work to enhance learning styles by using active and interactive teaching strategies.

This pathway begins with emphasis in the pharmaceutical sciences with an introduction to the profession. The core curriculum during the first year teaches the basic sciences, including: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. This lays a solid foundation for training in clinical sciences during years two and three and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) in year four. APPE consists of six rotations, six weeks each in community and clinical settings.

A majority of the pathway is taught through online courses using state-of-the-art synchronous and asynchronous technologies where students can learn at home from within the United States (study while outside of the US is prohibited). Additionally, students will be required to come to either the Bradenton, FL or Erie, PA campus at the end of the second semester each year for between one and three weeks in order to fulfill the laboratory, casework, and presentation portion of the curriculum.

The Distance Education Pathway tuition, your cost of attending the distance education pathway, and financial aid application instructions may be found under Tuition & Financial Aid. Note, because testing will be conducted through a virtual proctoring service, there is an additional technology fee for that service.  See tuition and fees for the current amount.

The opportunities for Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) graduates are endless. Pharmacists are currently working as generalists and specialists in community pharmacies, government agencies, hospice and home health care, hospital and institutional settings, independent ownership, long-term care facilities, consulting, managed care, medical and scientific publishing, drug information and research in the pharmaceutical industry, professional associations, uniformed service (public health and military), and academics. Additionally, beginning salaries in each of these areas are well above the national salary means, and with a well-documented long-term shortage of pharmacists ahead of us, the future job availability outlook looks good.

The LECOM School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and began the four-year Distance Education pathway leading to the Pharm.D. degree in 2014. The first cohort of 24 students graduated in June 2018. If you have any questions concerning the admissions process, contact [email protected] .

Notification of Professional Licensure

Please note that the PharmD degree earned by graduates from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Pharmacy Pathways, including the Distance Education Pathway, is accepted as a requirement to obtain a license to practice pharmacy in all states in the United States. LECOM is accredited by a recognized regional accreditor, Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the LECOM Pharmacy Program is specifically accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Attainment of the PharmD degree is one component of the state licensure process. LECOM Pharmacy graduates are eligible to sit for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and must successfully pass this exam to practice pharmacy in the United States. Individual states may have additional requirements. Most states require that the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE) which tests knowledge of federal and state laws also be successfully passed to obtain a Pharmacy license. Specific requirements for obtaining a Pharmacy license in a state where a license will be sought should be obtained from that state’s licensing board.”

Our Online Entry-Level PharmD Program

Join the full-time Distance pathway to earn your Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Our innovative distance learning pathway covers the same material as the traditional campus program but offers students the flexibility of completing coursework using distance education technology.

The Distance PharmD Experience

Creighton was the first to offer an accredited distance PharmD program, and since launching in 2001 we’ve built on our expertise.

In the PharmD distance pathway, students interact with faculty and mentors via web conferencing software, discussion boards, email, telephone and other media. The didactic coursework is taught on a semester basis. Some elements of the distance pathway are synchronous (live), while others are asynchronous.

Students complete laboratory courses and other activities on the Omaha campus during two-week sessions in the summer.  The clinical component of the distance pharmacy pathway is the same as the campus pharmacy pathway. A total of eight five-week clinical rotations are required, five of which are in required subject areas, with the remaining three in elective subject areas. These unpaid clinical rotations provide experience in actual pharmacy practice. Sites for clinical rotations are available in a variety of locations throughout the country and internationally.

PharmD Curriculum

The PharmD curriculum at Creighton focuses on the skills, knowledge and values needed for patient-focused care. It’s designed to help students learn new skills and then build on them.

Graduates will be able to effectively provide care in collaboration with patients, prescribers, other healthcare providers and the community based upon sound therapeutic principles, evidence-based data and research.
