How to use iPhone’s awesome new text-to-speech feature

In iOS 17, the iPhone got a built-in text-to-speech feature called Live Speech. You can even use Live Speech with a digital version of your own voice called Personal Voice.

Apple devised Personal Voice for users “ at risk of losing their ability to speak  — such as those with a recent diagnosis of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or other conditions that can progressively impact speaking ability.” It was the subject of a touching and heartfelt video Apple made called “The Lost Voice.”

Here’s how to set up and use Live Speech.

How to set up Live Speech and create your Personal Voice

Go to  Settings > Accessiblity > Live Speech (toward the bottom of the page). Enable “Live Speech” on top to turn it on. 

To use Live Speech, triple-click the side button of your iPhone. (On an older iPhone, triple-click the Home button). If a menu of options appears, select Live Speech. A keyboard will appear. Type whatever you want to say and hit  Send . Your iPhone will play what you entered over the speakers. It’ll highlight word-by-word as it speaks it out. 

In Live Speech settings, you can choose a voice from any of the Siri (or classic Mac OS) voices. But the real killer feature is creating a Personal Voice. This lets you digitize your voice so that iPhone text-to-speech sounds like it’s really coming from you. Go back and tap  Personal Voice > Create a Personal Voice . You should find a small, quiet room where you can speak uninterrupted for around 15 – 60 minutes.  Just follow the prompts on the screen and read them aloud.

Plug in your iPhone and let it process. It needs to turn all your recordings into a dynamic digital model of your voice. It could take an hour or more.

Go back to  Settings > Accessibility > Live Speech and you should see a new option to use your Personal Voice instead of the other canned voices. Tap the Play button to hear a quick preview; tap the name to set it.

Dictate text on iPhone

With Dictation on iPhone, you can dictate text anywhere you can type it. You can also use typing and Dictation together—the keyboard stays open during Dictation so you can easily switch between voice and touch to enter text. For example, you can select text with touch and replace it with your voice.

Dictation requests are processed on your device in many languages—no internet connection is required. When dictating in a search box, dictated text may be sent to the search provider in order to process the search.

Note: Dictation may not be available in all languages or in all countries or regions, and features may vary.

Turn on Dictation

Turn on Enable Dictation. If a prompt appears, tap Enable Dictation.

Tap in the text field to place the insertion point where you want to begin dictating text.

To insert an emoji or a punctuation mark, or perform simple formatting tasks, do any of the following:

Say the name of an emoji, such as “heart emoji” or “smiley face emoji.”

Say the name of the punctuation mark, such as “exclamation point.”

Say a formatting command such as “new line” or “new paragraph.”

How to use text-to-speech on iPhone and iPad

This guide will go over built-in methods and free third-party apps to turn text into speech on your iPhone and iPad.

1. Use Apple’s Speech Selection

All recent iPhones, iPads, and Macs have a built-in accessibility feature that lets you hear selected text. This system-wide setting works in Notes, Safari, Chrome, Pages, Mail, Gmail, Messages, and almost all other apps where you can select text.

Here’s how to use the Speak Selection feature on iPhone and iPad:

• Open the Settings app and tap Accessibility .
• Tap Spoken Content and turn on the switch for Speak Selection .
• Now, open Notes, Safari, Mail, or another app and select the text you want your iPhone or iPad to speak.
• Finally, tap Speak from the thin menu strip.

Your device will speak that text. You can use it to hear one word, a paragraph of several sentences, or multiple paragraphs — as long as the text is selected.

If you do not like the voice and the rate at which your iPhone or iPad speaks, head back to the Settings app > Accessibility > Spoken Content. From here, tap Voice to pick another voice. You can also adjust the Speaking Rate and explore other settings to your liking.

2. Use Live Speech on iOS 17 and later

Live Speech is yet another accessibility feature on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 that allows you to type something and have your iPhone or iPad speak it. What makes it unique is that you can use Live Speech even on a phone call.

In addition to that, you can create your Personal Voice and set that as your Live Speech voice, after which whatever you type will be spoken in YOUR voice ! It’s brilliant, and you should learn more about both Live Speech and Personal Voice !

3. Use Safari

Safari has a built-in option that can read web articles to you. So, if you have a lengthy research paper to read, go through a news item, or just want to listen to a tutorial while you follow the steps, your browser can easily handle that.

Here’s how to have web articles read to you in Safari:

• Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and visit the article you want to read.
• Tap the AA button in the URL address bar.
• Choose Listen to Page , and Safari will start reading the contents of this webpage to you.
• You can re-tap the AA icon and pick Listening Controls to pause, skip, change the speaking rate, or end listening.

4. Use iOS Shortcuts

You can convert custom text or web articles to speech using free Siri shortcuts. Here are two such options from Apple’s own shortcuts gallery.

• Open the Shortcuts app and tap Gallery .
• Use the search bar to find Turn Text Into Audio & Speak Body of Article shortcuts and add them.

• Now, tap the Turn Text Into Audio shortcut, type or paste the text you want to convert to speech, and tap Done , followed by the play button . This reader shortcut will speak what you entered.

• To use Speak Body of Article , open a web page in Safari or Chrome, tap the Share button , and select Speak Body of Article . The shortcut will read the main content of that web article. However, you won’t see an option to pause it, and the only way to stop it midway is to force close the browser !

5. Use Google

Google has several handy tricks up its sleeves, and here are two you must know about!

Use it for word pronunciation

While you can’t follow this method to hear long phrases or sentences, you can use it for situations where you want to know the meaning of a word as well as hear how it’s pronounced.

• Visit Google.com in a web browser like Safari or Chrome.
• Type the word and search for it. For some words, you may also have to add ‘ meaning .’ For instance, freemium meaning .
• Tap the tiny speaker icon to listen to its pronunciation.

Listen to web articles

Just like Safari, the Google app on iPhone and iPad (not Google.com in a web browser) can read articles to you. Here’s how:

• Get the Google app and visit the news, tutorial, or other such web page. Make sure the page loads fully.
• Tap the three dots menu icon from the top right and choose Read Aloud .
• Google will read the article, and you can manage its playback using the on-screen controls. To change the reading speed and voice, tap the three dots icon and customize it accordingly.

6. Use text-to-speech iOS apps

Finally, we come to free and freemium apps from the iOS App Store that can convert text to speech. You can use them to listen to pronunciations, have them read long PDFs and articles to you, or even export text as audio files.

You can share the recordings of the audio across social messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Messenger. Or you can save them to your device for later use.

There's a voice animation feature that doesn't add anything functionality-wise but is a nice superficial feature. There isn't an in-app way to share text to speech in phone calls, but this can be circumvented by setting your phone to loudspeaker and using the Listen button on the app for the person you're calling to hear.

Voice Aloud Reader, by Marcin Olawski, is a very capable and responsive app that saves you time by reading aloud digital text from websites, books, and whatever you put into the app yourself. It has a variety of languages, but only three voices for English. While the choices for English voices may be a little limited, the app more than makes up for it with its capability and unique features.

Voice Aloud Reader has an in-built web browser, where you can search webpages and add them to the reader to be read aloud. Through the My Library tab, the app can read books and files aloud. The app comes with A Christmas Carol, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Alice in Wonderland pre-loaded, but by pressing the Add icon in the top right you can import documents of your own.

Here's how to enable dictation, also known as voice-to-text, on your iPhone:

Now you're ready to dictate your response by using the voice-to-text iPhone commands. Frustratingly, there is no voice command to delete mistakes. If you want to delete something you'll either have to start a whole new note or text or tap the screen to select the text you want to replace and then tap the microphone to dictate the corrections.

• quote … end quote: to put quotations around a phrase say, "Quote," then say the phrase, and then say, "End Quote" to close the quotation.
• new paragraph: begins a new paragraph.
• new line: begins a new line of text.

Pausing on Android #

Android TTS does not support the pause function natively, so we have implemented a work around. We utilize the native onRangeStart() method to determine the index of start when pause is invoked. We use that index to create a new text the next time speak is invoked. Due to using onRangeStart() , pause works on SDK versions >= 26. Also, if using start and end offsets inside of setProgressHandler() , you'll need to keep a track of them if using pause since they will update once the new text is created when speak is called after being paused.

There's a known issue with integrating plugins that use Swift into a Flutter project created with the Objective-C template. Flutter#16049

iOS 18 to allow text effects for individual words in iMessage

Get ready to jazz up your iMessages. According to a MacRumors story citing “multiple sources familiar with the matter,” iOS 18 is going to take the fun text effects a step further by allowing you to add text effects to individual words within the message .

It is not clear if these will be the same text effects currently available to entire messages, entirely new ones (like bold or italics), or something else entirely. You can already add a handful of fun effects to your iMessages . There are full-screen effects like balloons, lasers, and confetti, or text effects like slam or invisible ink. Those text effects apply to your entire message, though.

Messages in iOS 18 is expected to get quite an upgrade with RCS support allowing for much better communication with Android phones, AI-powered autocomplete features, and maybe even custom AI-generated emojis . It’s not clear if these text effects will apply only to iMessages or will work with RCS messages as well, but Apple is incentivized to continue making iMessage a more full-featured and desirable alternative to the “green bubbles,” even if Android users can send messages that are more advanced that the current SMS ones.

Yes. Text to speech pronunciation can be adjusted with intentional misspelling words (spelling a word as it sounds). For numbers, try writing them out in full, for example, 1998 becomes “nineteen ninety-eight”.

iMessage in iOS 18 to bring animations and text effects to individual words—is rich text support coming?

Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 release is expected to be one of the iPhone’s biggest software updates ever. Today a new report highlights an enhancement set to be added to one of Apple’s most popular apps: Messages.

Joe Rossignol, writing for MacRumors :

Apple plans to add a new text effects feature to the Messages app on iOS 18, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. While it is already possible to send iMessages with bubble effects or full-screen effects, such as invisible ink or confetti, the text effects would allow you to add animations to individual words within a message.

It sounds like the new iMessage feature may work similarly to a rich text system, but with a lot more razzle-dazzle.

Just about every other first-party iPhone app that supports text input lets you modify that text, down to the individual word or letter, with rich text controls like bold, italics, and underline. Certain apps also support creating bulleted or numbered lists, or different headers or other content types.

Rich text support would be a welcome addition to iOS 18, but it’s interesting that this rumor mentions nothing about rich text and focuses instead on “text effects” that are comparable to the existing Bubble and Screen effects.

Text animations would be a new thing entirely, and it’d be interesting to see not only how they work, but also whether they make it to any of iOS 18’s other pre-installed apps like Notes or Mail.

9to5Mac’s Take

The way I read this rumor, Apple is planning a form of rich text support for Messages in iOS 18. Most likely, that will include not only the basics like bold, italics, and underline, but also some more exciting options.

The ability to animate individual words, highlight them, or otherwise make parts of your message pop sounds like a lot of fun. I’m excited to see what WWDC brings in just a few more days—June 10 can’t come soon enough.

This as been one of the best text to speech apps I have ever used. I could copy and paste large swaths of an Ebook and listen throughout my work day. The voice options are broad but not anything special compared to other text to speech apps. The best feature was the ability to pause scroll and start anywhere in the text. Many texts don’t have this feature and it is very important if you ever need to take a break from your book or where distractioned but you don’t want to have to search for where you ended in the text and delete your finished reading and restart the text. The save function could be improved by creating small excerpts of the saved work as a title (like Speak4Me) as of now it is save as the whole text which makes it hard to find previous saved text. I would also suggest increasing the maximum play speed. Sadly since I got my new iPhone 14 I have had issues loading this app and won’t be using it for the near future but this has to be the number one best text to speech app I have found to date.

I am so happy and grateful for coming across this app. I’m a tracheotomy patient and I suffer from a vocal cord paralysis. It has been a very difficult 4 years trying to verbally communicate with people. During the pandemic I have really been having a hard time being understood because my mouth is covered. I ran across this app yesterday and instantly started playing around with it after I downloaded it onto my phone. This app has made it easy for me to send messages to my people without them having to read multiple texts from me. I’m going to keep playing around with it to learn more. I used it at a restaurant to place an order as well. Yes, simple things like that has been very difficult, this app gives me hope….thank you.

Good app, but could use some fixes.

I have been searching for an app to use for when I go nonverbal, and this one can be pretty useful. It has quite a few voices to choose from and I like that it isn’t limited with what you can say. I have been having an issue though with my saved/favorited phrases. When I search for a phrase, I’m not able to select and play it after searching. I can only play the phrases I have saved if I scroll to find them from the entire list. This kind of defeats the purpose of being able to search for phrases. I’m unsure if this is a glitch or a design flaw. It would also be really helpful to be able to create categories for saved phrases. I know this is not necessarily intended to be an AAC app, but it would be a perfect free alternative for people like me if those features were added.

10 Large Language Models That Matter to the Language Industry

The landscape of large language models (LLMs) is changing fast. The pace of releases is accelerating, along with performance and capability advances. 

Models are becoming more multimodal, and covering a wider range of languages.

In this article, we home in on the last six months with a recap of ten notable LLM releases that have moved the needle in terms of language AI.

GPT-4o from OpenAI — May 2024

OpenAI describes the newest version of its large language model as a “step towards much more natural human-computer interaction.”

GPT-4o accepts and generates any combination of text, audio, image, and video. Its response time to audio inputs — 232 milliseconds, reportedly —  is relevant for applications that need low latency like live captioning and real-time speech-to-speech. Furthermore, it is already being integrated as the LLM of choice in translation management platforms like Phrase.

OpenAI also cites a range of new and improved capabilities, such as the interpretation of emotions through facial expressions. See Slator’s coverage of the original release here .

LlaMA 3 from Meta — April 2024

You have likely already encountered Meta’s Llama 3 in the wild. The model — described by Meta as “the most capable openly available LLM to date” — is behind the Meta AI assistant that is now embedded in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Llama 3 is optimized for dialogue use cases (i.e., AI assistants) and is English-centric. Meta calls non-English use cases “ out-of-scope ” but does, however, allow for fine-tuning on languages beyond English if this refinement falls within the terms of its license agreement .

A research paper for Lllama 3 has been promised for “ the coming months ”.

Gemma from Google — February 2024

Gemma is — compared to its predecessor, Google Gemini— quite little. The model’s weights are available in two sizes: 2B and 7B. 

Lightweight models are faster, cheaper, and easier to use. Google hopes this, along with making Gemma open, will encourage researchers and developers to build more on the company’s AI models.

Gemma shares technical and infrastructure components with Gemini and Google states that Gemma surpasses significantly larger models on key benchmarks. Potential applications include “conversational translators” and “multilingual writing assistants.”

Gemini is Google’s “largest and most capable AI model widely available today.” Originally launched in December 2023, Gemini was Google’s attempt to regain the upper hand in AI , a year on from the launch of ChatGPT by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

The original release claimed state-of-the-art performance on a range of multimodal benchmarks,” including automatic speech recognition (ASR) and automatic speech translation.

The 1.5 version offers a broader context window (useful, for example, for achieving more contextually relevant machine translation) and has “enhanced performance” on tasks such as analyzing, classifying and summarizing large amounts of content.

Aya from Cohere — February 2024

A number of specialized AI startups have moved into the LLM development space alongside OpenAI and big tech. These include AI labs such as Anthropic, Stability.AI, and Mistral AI, as well as AI platform Cohere. 

Cohere’s Aya model aims to extend AI capabilities beyond English to achieve massive multilinguality . The model is an open-source, massively multilingual LLM covering 101 different languages. 

Marzieh Fadaee, Senior Research Scientist at Cohere, told SlatorCon Remote in March 2024, that, with Aya, Cohere has also created one of the largest datasets for instruction fine-tuning of multilingual models. It is, Fadaee said, a resource that is “particularly valuable for languages with limited representation.”

CroissantLLM from Unbabel — February 2024

CroissantLLM is a French-English LLM from CentraleSupélec, Carnegie Mellon University, and Unbabel . 

The open-source model was developed to address the lack of models where English is not the dominant training language. “Our end goal is to have a model less skewed towards English performance or cultural biases,” the researchers said . 

CroissantLLM is designed to be very lightweight, with the goal of encouraging widespread adoption and a reduction of cost and deployment challenges. 

Mixtral 8x7B from Mistral AI — December 2023

Another open-source model, Mixtral 8x7B handles English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. 

On release, Mistral reported that Mixtral 8x7B was the “the best model overall regarding cost / performance trade-offs” and said it exceeded GPT3.5 on most benchmarks.

In December 2023, researchers from ADAPT Centre used Mistral 7B (an earlier version) to show how fine-tuning can enhance the real-time, adaptive machine translation capabilities of a general-purpose LLM.

Translatotron 3 from Google — December 2023

Translation 3 is another step forward in the fast-moving field of direct speech-to-speech. Google calls it the “first fully unsupervised end-to-end model for direct speech-to-speech translation.”

The third version of Translatotron improves on previous versions in a few ways, most notably in its unsupervised S2ST architecture. 

According to a post from Google researchers, “this method opens the door not only to translation between more language pairs but also towards translation of the non-textual speech attributes such as pauses, speaking rates, and speaker identity,”

The system was also able to “learn” direct speech-to-speech translation from monolingual data alone.

SeamlessM4T v2 from Meta — November 2023

Exemplifying the current trend toward more multimodal models, Seamless M4T is a suite of AI models for both speech and text translations. The model can convert across modes — speech into text, speech into speech, and text into speech — and across languages with text-to-text translations for up to 100 languages.

On release , Meta Product Product Lead Jeff Wang said on X, “We just made speech translation a whole lot better!”

SeamlessExpressive from Meta — November 2023

SeamlessExpressive (a component of SeamlessM4T v2) offers speech-to-speech translation in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Chinese. The original speaker’s pitch, pace and tone are retained in the translated speech.

A further, novel approach to speech mapping was put forward in early June 2024 by Meta AI researchers. A new model — SeamlessExpressiveLM — was instructed to work in sequence, first translating semantic content, and then transfering the speaker’s vocal style. This sequential approach was evaluated in Spanish and Hungarian into English speech translations, with measurable vocal style improvements.
