Yaman movie review: Vijay Antony film is a watchable political drama
Yaman is a political thriller that follows the story of tamilarasan (vijay antony), who goes from being a nobody to a powerful political leader in tamil nadu..
Yaman movie cast: Vijay Antony, Miya George, Thiagarajan Yaman movie director: Jeeva Shankar Yaman movie rating: 2 stars
Music composer-turned-actor Vijay Antony cannot do what mass heroes in Tamil films do as the audience may not accept him that way at present. His latest film Yaman (Lord of Death), directed by filmmaker Jeeva Shankar, seems to be an attempt to establish him as an up-and-coming hero of the masses.
Yaman is a political thriller that follows the story of Tamilarasan (Vijay Antony), who goes from being a nobody to a powerful political leader in Tamil Nadu . His path to prosperity and success is paved with the corpses of those who helped and opposed him. And the filmmakers rightly titled it Yaman, which is a nickname given to Tamilarasan’s character in the film as both of his parents died within a week of his birth.
Tamilarasan goes to jail in an accident case in place of someone who paid him off. He needs the money for his grandfather’s operation. It is in the jail that he makes both friends and enemies who help him realise his political ambitions. The film is smart, witty and even engaging to a large extent but after a point of time, the pace and the length of the movie tests the patience of the audience. Jeeva avoids unwanted punchlines and rude jokes in the film, which works in its favour.
More from the world of Entertainment:
All the characters in the film have a purpose and contribute to the progress of the story to some level. The film also marks the comeback of veteran actor Thiagarajan, who has played a key role in the film. He has delivered a convincing performance in the film as a selfish and cold-hearted politician. Miya Georg has played the female lead in the film. She plays the role of film actor called Ahalya who falls for Tamilarasan. After she gets married to Tamilarasan, she gives up her successful acting career and ends up doing household chores. Women empowerment, go to hell.
Jeeva, who introduced Vijay as a lead actor with his 2012 film Naan, has tried to help the actor click with the masses with Yaman. It is a watchable political drama, which has come out at the right time in the light of the ongoing political crisis in Tamil Nadu.

Singer : Hemachandra Rap : Chetan, Kumar Lyric : Annamalai
Yen Mela Kai Vecha Gaali starts off like a pop number and then the Vijay Antony Kuthu beats take over. There is a tinge of EDM mixed well with a classical touch like in the Karikaalan song from Vettaikaaran. Hemchandra has the throw required for the song and the rap portions are okayish. The blend of numerous genres makes it a nice listen.
Damelo Dumelo
Singer : Saranya Vocal : Maria Roe Vincent & El Fe Lyric : P. Vetriselvan
A song that seems like it could have Stomp and crumb dance steps. It has voices rendered in a western style. There is a repetitive tune and the English lyrics flow in. There is nothing to complain but it does not attract the listener with any unique instrument or rhythm. There is a continuous use of trance and EDM in most song and it follows the same pattern.
Kadavul Ezuthum
Singers : Yazin Nizar, Janaki Iyer Lyric : Ko Sesha
Yazin Nizar and Janaki sound good in this melody which has a monotonous tempo and beat. The juggle between the melodious parts and the use of electronic music is good. Lyrics by Ko Sesha make Kadavul Ezhuthum a relaxing melody from Vijay Antony.
Sigaram Chella
Singers : Jagadeesh, Ranjit Unni, Velmurugan, Ayyappan Lyric : Eknath
A fast paced number in the voices of Jagadeesh, Ranjit, Velumurugan and Ayyappan. It is that inspirational push giving song that is perfectly in sync with the situation of the movie. Lyrics by Eknath are commendable but the song could have had a slightly more unique structure to make it the song “on loop”. However, it does interest you with it’s attractive theme.
Neeye Thaniyaai
Singer : Jagadeesh Lyric : Muthamilan
Neeye Thaniyaai is the finale song to finish with from Yaman. The Violin used in this song kindles emotions in the listener and this song is clearly about a struggle that preaches a little but has it’s moments with Jagadeesh’s voice suiting the genre. A nice finish to Yaman’s album.

Yaman movie review: Decent political drama that only works in parts
Director: Jeeva Shankar
Cast: Vijay Antony, Miya George, Thiagarajan, Arul D Shankar
The film opens in the 80s with Arivudai Nambi’s (Vijay Antony) wife Akalya (Shilpa) giving birth to a male baby. The couple had an inter-caste marriage much against the wishes of their families. The same day Nambi is killed by his brother-in-law Kathiresan (Muthukumar) and his relative Thangapandian (Arul D Shankar). Akalya consumes poison and dies. The newborn is given a name Tamizharasan and a nickname Yaman as both his parents are deceased soon after his birth.
Cut to present, Tamizharasan (Vijay Antony) is a grownup youth who is calculative and nurtures political ambition. He goes to jail in place of someone else, as the culprit is ready to pay him hefty money. He needed money to pay for his grandfather’s (Sangili Murugan) operation. It is in the jail he encounters his first political associate Manimaran (Marimuthu) and from there on he gets entangled in a political web. How he uses the opportunities to his favor to climb up the ladder and realises his political ambition in a manipulative way forms the rest. There’s also a functional romantic angle with an actress Anjana (Miya George).
It could be agreed that Vijay Antony has played to his strength and has given a good performance. From nobody to somebody in politics, his rise has been brought out well. Ace Thiagarajan as Karunakaran, the manipulative mastermind in politics has given a laudable performance and proves his versatility. Others like Arul D Shankar, the ever-dependable veteran Charlie, Swaminathan and Sangili Murugan are aptly cast and score well. Miya George is just about adequate. Though the dialogues were sharp and relevant in the current political climate, the screenplay does not offer anything new. Logic goes for a toss, as it is unlikely that a common man takes on a powerful ruling party minister and triumphs in all his endeavors. And why Tamizharasan turns wicked and vengeful is not clearly portrayed.
Though the BGM goes well with the mood of the film, Antony’s songs are a big downer. Jeeva Shankar’s cinematography is decent. The movie moves at a slow pace and an urgent trimming is needed. It is a clear attempt of Jeeva Shankar to project Vijay Antony as a mass hero, but the film works only in parts.

Review by Michael James ★★½
The political thriller has its set of interesting moments with decent twists, but gets bogged down by the slow pace and unnecessary romantic portions. The slo-mo shots with multiple bgm versions of ‘Yen mela kai vacha gaali’ playing in the background amps up the mass sequences than the script. An average outing.
Review by nrh ★★★½
know i've said this before but consistently impressed by the way certain strain of tamil film manages to ground genre film needs with very specific milieu and plotting. here what seems to be multi generational karmic revenge story (child of mixed caste marriage has his parents murdered, as an adult accepts responsibility for hit and run and is drawn into web of violence that ends not only when he kills murderers of parents, now at top of political chain, but has usurped their place) is slowly revealed to be very cynical film about the way being even in orbit of local political process corrupts.
jeeva shankar's direction can be a little functional at times, too often mistaking sickly green highlights…
Review by Rohan Babu ★★½
Frustrating for most of the part as none of those supposed grand twists and moments feels like its supposed to.

Vijay Antony is put in several situations that will force him to kill others and save his life. How he gets into politics and how he beats the villain forms the fulcrum of the story. Thumbs Up : 1. Vijay Antony's performance deserves a special mention. His subtle expression in certain places has complemented the story well.
2. The mind game between the hero and the villain keep the viewers engrossed in the story.
3. Veteran actor Thiagarajan as a politician is a revelation.
4. Cinematography by Jeeva Shankar is a huge advantage to the script.
5. Miya George comes throughout the movie and her character in the film also pushed the story forward. Thumbs Down : 1. The story's narration in the first half is slow paced and might test your patience at times.
2. For a script like Yaman, songs do not add to the story. The song placement in the film could have been better. VERDICT : Vijay Antony has another winner on the hands.
Verdict: Vijay Antony has another winner on the hands.

A routine political drama that traverses through the life of a youngster, who by chance bumps into strangers, who later turn into acquaintances followed by foes – That’s a simple and single line plot of Yaman, which comes from the successful combination of Naan. What follows next is a series of a twists and turns into the tale, where Vijay Antony comes across numerous characters that lets him get into world of politics. Yaman Movie Review
Yaman is a political thriller movie which was written and directed by Jeeva Shankar. On behalf of Lyca Production Company and Vijay Antony Film Corporation, the movie was produced by Subaskaran and Fathima Vijay Antony. The movie features Vijay Antony, Miya George and Thyagarajan have acted in leading roles. The movie’s music was composed by Vijay Antony himself.
Jeeva Shankar had also done the cinematography work and the editing part was played by Veera Senthil Raj. The film, which features Jeeva Shankar and Vijay Antony doubling up as the cinematographer and the music composer respectively is the highlight of the movie. The song “Yem Mela Kai Vachaa Gaali” was released as a single during September 2016 and it was already a Hit.
Actors like Sangili Murugan, G Marimuthu, Charlie, Swaminathan and Prinz Nithik have acted in supporting roles in the political drama Yaman. Vijay Antony’s style of acting is good and his chemistry with Miya George had worked very well in the movie.
The music has captured hearts of many which was composed by Vijay Antony. The movie will have more powerful punch dialogues by Vijay Antony. He had acted as a politician for the very first time. The cinematography and editing work is made excellently. The locations which was chosen was awesome.
The movie is based on present Political situation which is happening in Tamilnadu, but not as same as it is happening. Vijay Antony’s performance and his stylish acting will have positive feedback from his fans. On the flip side, the romantic portions between Mia and Vijay Antony falls flat. Songs are not catchy and that tests patience of audience.
Overall, a subtle Political drama!

As the film begins, in the mid 1980s Thriunelveli, Arivudai Nambi is killed by his rivals, who fear that their position would be threatened if he were to make it big in politics. Arividuai Nambi's wife commits suicide after the sudden death of her husband. Eventually, Arivudai Nambi's father looked after and cared for his grandson.
Decades later, Arivudai Nambi's son Tamilarasan is accidentally drawn into the murky world of behind-the-screens politicking when he is jailed due to admitting to having hit someone on the road. Two gangster-type baddies with political backing become his enemies, and this, in turn, brings him closer to Karunakaran, a political heavyweight who has his own ambitions.
A minister sees Tamilarasan as an enemy because he sees him as Nambi, whom he had conspired to murder and later killed. Meanwhile, Tamailarasan had a friendly relationship with Anjana after she accidentally hit him on his motorbike. Machinations and counter-machinations grow with the growing political ambitions of Tamilarasan, whose rivals will not let him and his wife, Anjana, live in peace. Tamilarasan boldly faces all this in his game of one-upmanship and realizes his dream of growing big in politics, like his father.

Yaman movie review: Vijay Antony plays dirty politics in this Jeeva Shankar film
If writer shankar’s motive was to highlight the filth in the indian political system with its share of treachery and corruption, the movie looks awfully exaggerated and unrealistic..
Yaman Direction: Jeeva Shankar Cast: Vijay Antony, Miya George, Thiagarajan Rating: 1/5
At times like these when the world is wracked by terror and violence, Tamil cinema goes merrymaking with sickle dance and bloodshed. And not just this, the fight sequences are set to music – with drums and other instruments freely used – and choreographed in a way to convey that end is paramount, whichever be the road to it. And director Jeeva Shankar ropes in Vijay Antony to play an ordinary citizen, Tamizharasan in Yaman or Lord of Death.
Used as a pawn by two rival politicians, Karunakaran and Pandian (who had once murdered Tamizharasan’s father in cold blood), Tamizharasan could put to shame Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes put together. Such is our hero’s intuitiveness and cunning that he smells his enemies – who are in their dozens – in the most unlikely of places, including a jail and a bar in a movie whose plot is boringly similar to Kamal Haasan’s Sathya and Subramaniapuram among several others.
If plot novelty takes a beating here, the writing is poor and scripting poorer with Shankar turning Tamizharasan literally into a Yaman, whose dance of death smacks of eeriness and unexplained evil. As I watched the film, I was wondering why Tamizharasan should degenerate into such a vengeful man, especially when he remains in the dark about his father’s killer.
If writer Shankar’s motive was to highlight the filth in the Indian political system with its share of treachery and corruption (look at the way a top cop accepts a bribe to let a bar operate without any hassles), the movie looks awfully exaggerated and unrealistic. Is Shankar wanting to tell us that politics is nothing but a huge cauldron of garbage that men like Karunakaran and Pandian take pleasure in filling.
Honestly, if the idea was to slot Antony’s Tamizharasan as some kind of a guardian angel, some kind of a saviour, Yaman does not work. . The man kills – or very cleverly gets others to do his dirty work. His hands, by and large, remain unsoiled – probably a ploy to airbrush Tamizharasan’s villainous image , to get a little white into the black.
A bit of romance between Mia George’s Archana (an actress) and Tamizharasan perhaps as a “relief” to all this gore sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. There is zero chemistry between them, and Antony looks visibly ill at ease as the lover-boy.

Yaman, also known as Lord of Death, is a 2017 political action thriller written and directed in Tamil by Jeeva Shankar in India. The movie, which is co-produced by Lyca Productions and Vijay Antony Film Corporation, stars Thiagarajan as another important character and Vijay Antony as a father and son alongside Miya. The movie was released with Jeeva Shankar and Vijay Antony playing dual roles as composer and cinematographer, respectively. The film was a financial hit.
In the mid-1980s, in Thriunelveli, the film opens with Arivudai Nambi being assassinated by his competitors, who worry that if he succeeds in politics, their own power would be jeopardized. Following the untimely death of her husband, Nambi’s wife ends her own life. In the end, Nambi’s father took good care of his grandson.
Many years later, when Nambi’s son Tamilarasan gets incarcerated after admitting to hitting someone on the road, he unintentionally finds himself entangled in the shadowy world of behind-the-scenes politics. He becomes the enemy of two political operatives who resemble gangsters, which puts him in the path of Karunakaran, a powerful politician with his own goals.
Because Tamilarasan reminds him of Nambi, whom he killed after plotting to kill him, the minister views Tamilarasan as an enemy. After Anjana unintentionally collided with Tamailarasan on his motorcycle, the two became amicable. With Tamilarasan’s political aspirations growing, so do the machinations and counter-machinations that keep him and his wife, Anjana, from living in harmony with their opponents. Tamilarasan, who aspires to become as successful in politics as his father, bravely confronts all of this in his game of one-upmanship.

Yaman is a 2017 Tamil political thriller directed by Jeeva Shankar and starring Vijay Antony, Charlie, and Gajaraj. The plot revolves around the ruthless world of politics, where two brothers, Bodinathan and Tamilarasan, fight against each other for power. Vijay Antony plays the lead role of Tamilarasan, a man born into a political family who decides to leave the world of politics after his father's brutal murder. Tamilarasan, however, is forced to re-enter the game by his uncle, who needs his support to become the Chief Minister.
The twist in the plot emerges when Tamilarasan discovers that his uncle is not an honest man and is instead involved in illegal activities. This prompts Tamilarasan to stand for the elections to become the Chief Minister of the state and bring an end to the corruption prevalent in the political landscape.
In the meanwhile, his elder brother Bodinathan (played by Vijay Antony) takes up arms against Tamilarasan in his bid for power. What follows is a political thriller with backstabbing, betrayal, and power-hungry individuals who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals.
The characterization in Yaman is strong and has commendable performances from all the actors. Vijay Antony shines as both Tamilarasan and Bodinathan, playing both characters with great nuance. Charlie as Tamilarasan's aide also puts on a convincing performance.
The film is a commentary on the state of politics in the country, where corrupt politicians are often rewarded instead of being punished. The director has tried to show how a virtuous man can still succeed in politics, albeit with great difficulty. The movie also touches on the problems of election violence and the exploitation of the poor by those in power.
The music in Yaman is composed by Vijay Antony, and the songs are catchy and add a layer of depth to the movie's underlying themes. The cinematography is praiseworthy, with some great shots capturing the political landscape of the state.
The climax of the movie is both unpredictable and satisfying, with an unexpected twist that keeps the audience engaged till the end. The movie does have a few flaws, such as predictable plot points, but overall, it is an excellent watch, especially for those interested in politics and thrillers.
In conclusion, Yaman is a well-made thriller that keeps the audience engaged with its strong performances, excellent cinematography, and a tight storyline. The movie shows how politics is often dirty and corrupt and how a virtuous person can make a difference if he puts in the effort. If you are a fan of thrillers and politics, then Yaman is worth a watch.

Yaman Review: Overall, a little more pace, doing away a duet song which appears in the second half which makes audience yawn and slight tone down of heroism would have worked wonders.
