The AU Honors Program prides itself on developing integrative, interdisciplinary, problem-based learners, through its rigorous and diverse curriculum. The Capstone is the culminating course of this challenging 4-year sequence. Students may use the capstone to bridge work in two majors or between a major and a minor. The Capstone may be used to explore a field of interest other than a major.

There are two ways to fulfill the Honors Capstone requirement. The most popular way is by completing an Honors-approved Capstone in your major. The second option is by taking HNRS-498, which is an independent study research project of your choice. Scroll down to learn which is the best option for you.

All Capstones, regardless of how they are completed, must meet the guidelines listed below. Submit your Capstone to [email protected] by the last day of the final exam period.

Honors Capstone Guidelines

Guidelines for all capstones.

Students will be expected to present their final Capstone projects at the Honors Research Conference in April.

Additional Guidelines for Group Capstones

If the capstone is a group project then the following additional steps should be added:

Major-Based Capstone

Getting approval for major-based capstones.

There are four steps to getting a major-based Capstone approved:

1. Student submits Capstone Planning Form.

2. Honors contacts faculty member to confirm that the Capstone course meets the Honors guidelines.

3. Faculty confirms that the course meets Honors guidelines.

4. Honors notifies student of approval.

If your plans change, you can submit a new Capstone Planning Form at any time. Honors will contact the most recent faculty member you submit.

Group Capstone Projects

Capstones are ideally independent research projects. However, Honors understands that it makes more sense for certain majors to complete group assignments.

If your Capstone class is designed to be completed as a group, Honors requires you to complete a Group Capstone Project Plan at the start of the semester and a brief Reflective Analysis at the end of the semester. This analysis will help demonstrate your role within the group and what you learned from participating in the Capstone. Read more about the additional group Capstone requirements above.

Honors Capstone

Hnrs-498 overview.

Honors 498 is an independent study. This course can be used to create a research project that spans multiple majors or minors. This is an opportunity to create a unique final project of your choice to culminate your AU career.

Registering for HNRS-498

You are responsible for designing your research project or creative work, and identifying the faculty member who will guide and assess you throughout the semester. Make sure you consult with your faculty member and your academic advisor before registering.

HNRS-498 follows the same registration process as a typical independent study. The form you need for registration can be found on Registrar's website .

Reminder: Submit your finished Capstone to [email protected] by the last day of the final exam period.

American Studies

Capstone project.

As the culminating experience for the American studies minor, students must (during the spring semester of their senior year) pursue an independent research project, internship or service-based project that will be advised by two professors from different departments and presented at an end-of-year American studies symposium.

The project provides students with an opportunity to bring together the perspectives of two different disciplines on a research area of particular interest.

Before the student begins the project, he or she will need to submit a  proposal (PDF) that describes the project and contains the signatures of the two faculty members they’ve chosen to advise the project. The student will also need to decide whether to register for the course within English (EN 405), history (HS 490) or political science (490). If neither of their advisors come from one of these departments, the student will need to contact the American studies committee chair (Jean Lee Cole at [email protected] ).

The proposal must be submitted to the American studies committee by Dec. 1. The project must contain both a research and a formal writing component (the equivalent of a 20- to 25-page research paper).

Kogod’s Capstone Championship Celebrates Student Expertise

The Kogod School of Business’s inaugural Capstone Championship highlights students’ semester-long projects and the skills they developed along the way.

Capstone Championship header

Darby Joyce

Content Marketing Coordinator

Senior undergraduate students from the Kogod School of Business’s capstone course put their expertise to work for a panel of professional judges at the recent Capstone Championship event. In this first iteration of the event, students presented their Capstone Consulting Projects, worked in teams to recommend solutions directly to their clients, and showed off what they’ve learned from their coursework. The event showcased the result of these students’ hard work and allowed them to network with the clients who partnered with Kogod for the semester.

“It was so lovely to see how the students incorporated concepts they’d acquired from class and applied it to this experiential learning component,” said Kogod professor of management Anna Fung, who taught one of the capstone course blocks this semester. “They’ve worked so diligently all semester, and it was a joy to have them demonstrate their knowledge to a team of real-world judges!”

MGMT458 Faculty

Capstone course professors Betsy Baton, Dan Kopman, and Anna Fung.

Professor Fung joined fellow capstone course professors Betsy Baton and Dan Kopman in supporting students who participated in the event. Prior to the event, around 210 capstone seniors worked in teams of five or six to develop and pitch projects designed to support the growth of one of two clients. The three professors then selected eleven teams to move on to the final event, where they presented their work in groups to the clients themselves. Garden for Wildlife CEO Shubber Ali and ModPod founder Charles Vinal led judge panels made up of business leaders—many AU alums—with consulting, venture capital, nonprofit, and technological experience. The panels listened to the teams’ ideas for strategy, branding, partnerships, and beyond, engaged them in a question-and-answer session, and ultimately selected four teams to move on to a highly competitive final round.

I think that all of the final four were winners. The judges said that it came down to a fraction of a percent between the teams.”

Betsy Baton

Betsy Baton

Professor of Management, Kogod School of Business

The team that came out on top in this close race was Mission ModPossible, made up of Kogod students Michael Bleeker, Jack Green, Frances Morales, Guinevere Pijor, and Yousef Shabana. They impressed judges with their preparation, insight, and thoughtful answers to the judges’ questions and were recognized by the client they had spent the semester working on concepts for. ModPod’s Vinal was particularly engaged with the capstone courses throughout the semester, reaching out to students beyond the initial project development to offer advice and watch the progress unfold in real-time. With one of the ModPod projects taking home the top award, he could see the results of that investment in Kogod’s students.

Faced with the difficult task of narrowing the teams down to four and then to just one champion, judges across the board were impressed by the students’ expertise and confidence in their projects. One of them, SALTUS president Nenad Dordevic, remarked to Baton that he was shocked to learn that the students were undergraduates, as they answered questions with such expertise that he had assumed they were in the MBA program. “In each round, he asked them tough, sophisticated business questions thinking they were at the graduate level,” Baton recalled. “He was flabbergasted to learn they were seniors.”

Capstone Championship Winners

Mission ModPossible, the Capstone Championship's winning team.

Highlighting the professionalism of Kogod’s capstone students motivated the event’s team to host the event in the first place. Kogod senior associate dean Parthiban David has long been interested in featuring the capstone program’s students and the projects they spend a semester on. This year’s competition finally brought that idea to fruition. With Kogod staff Jim Waite and Chloe Irwin coordinating alums involvement and management professor Tom Kohn working with capstone project clients, the event's success was a Kogod-wide effort. As Professor Kohn mentioned, it also required the clients' engagement.

“Capstone clients introduce the project at the beginning of the semester, sometimes come to see the mid-semester presentation, and attend the final presentations to listen and give our students feedback,” he explained. “Of course, the best clients also like to teach, give back, and interact with the students.” Over the past eight years, Kohn has brought in over forty companies to work with his capstone students and focuses on finding partners that will provide not only projects but valuable lessons as well.

While teaching from books can be good and teaching from case studies better, giving the students projects with real clients and real problems that may even change across the semester is the best way to teach, in my opinion.”

Tom Kohn

The Capstone Championship and the capstone courses provide graduating Kogod students with real, hands-on business experience before they begin their careers—an experience Professor Kohn believes is critical to their success. “Through these experiential projects, I think we’re best-preparing students for the work world, where working hard and adjusting as necessary are the keys to success,” he said. Students in Kogod’s capstone courses get the opportunity to work with businesses that interest them and showcase that work for an audience at events like this semester’s championship.

What is the Capstone Project?

A common question any student has, especially in high school, is the definition capstone project. According to the University of Virginia, this task is a two-semester project where students must independently research a topic to obtain a deep understanding of the subject matter. UV gives many recommendations when preparing your assignment you can use. But here our professional writers will dig into detail about the purpose of this significant work as well as methods to overcome some hurdles. There are several sections that encompass a capstone project meaning, which we’ll detail below.

The main goal of this task is to challenge a student to carry out significant research over an extended period of time. Not everyone is up to the arduous journey this task demands. Therefore capstone project for sale for college is a common way to avoid failure. Leveraging the help of the pros, you get a set of guarantees to ensure a quality paper that is plagiarism-free and will get a good grade.

One of the most complex issues is a capstone paper. What makes it so difficult? To figure it out, we need to define the capstone project meaning first because there is no way you can handle an assignment without knowing what it requires from you.

A Capstone project is a challenging and rewarding academic task that students undertake at the end of their academic journey. It is a kind of research-based assignment that requires a student to take the initiative and demonstrate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the academic years. To accomplish this task, many students look for an essay writing service online to get a professionally written Capstone paper. Such an approach has proven to be beneficial in terms of both time and quality of the work.

Capstone Project Definition

What is the capstone definition? A capstone project is a culminating assignment, on which students usually work on during their final year in school or at the end of the academic program. It requires different intellectual activities. This project helps young people learn how to find and analyze information and how to work with it efficiently. It has a wide variety of forms. This means that a capstone program can be submitted in various forms including a multimedia presentation, film, performance, or paper. A capstone research project is very similar to a college thesis. No one can argue that this type of work is a bit more complicated as writing a capstone project involves a wider range of activities like critical thinking, deep analysis, and the ability to use different media.

What is a capstone project purpose? A capstone college course can help students demonstrate their knowledge and skills and it can also be used as an employment portfolio. At university, people get such tasks in the last class of a study program.

In most cases, while working on a nursing capstone project, a student can be asked to pick out a topic such as a profession, a social problem, or another topic in which he or she is interested. After that, the student finds information, analyzes it, and makes a portfolio or presentation based on the findings. During a presentation, a person demonstrates the project to the class and gives a short conclusion. The student usually gives an oral presentation apart from the main material, which can be in writing, film or a multimedia product.

Why do you have to write about it? Capstone projects were generally developed to encourage student's abilities of critical thinking, problem-solving, oral communication skills, research skills, and teamwork. Moreover, thanks to this project, students learn to connect with the community and analyze important issues, problems, and ideas. Some tasks include outside-of-school experiences, like interviews and scientific observations.

Colleges may present this task at any academic level. And you may be faced with this task in several areas from Political Science, Criminal Justice, Biology, Literature, etc. As a result, the requirements can differ significantly across courses, but often, your work will result in some type of presentation at the end. As a guideline, a capstone project will revolve around the following framework:

How to handle this task? Below are a few examples which illustrate the general forms of work and objectives found in capstone projects:

As you see, it has many different forms.

Importance Of A Capstone Project

But why is it important work? There are many factors that explain its importance and one of the main factors is that it increases the austerity of academic studies of the senior year. How? You may ask. In many cases, students take simpler courses for their last or senior year, which can lead to learning failure or deficient preparation for their work in college. In this way, a capstone project can help increase preparation for college and work, reduce the loss of learning during the senior year and encourage efficient work and new interesting experiences in science or other disciplines.

Also, it increases individual motivation. Assignments like this require creative work on topics that are interesting to a person, which increases motivation significantly.

Capstone projects are a great way of demonstrating the proficiency of learning. This type of work can help young people determine their competence and readiness to demonstrate what they have learned through the course of their project.

How else can it be useful? Involving students in long-term projects which combine their ambitions and goals, motivate people to more deliberate future planning, understanding their main objectives, career exploration, and obtaining useful experience, which will help them in their future careers.

In addition, capstone projects can give students more confidence in their strengths and make their self-perception clearer which is always a good thing.

A capstone project is a unique academic undertaking that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students. The project aims to showcase the student's ability to independently create, research, and analyze a particular issue. To accomplish this goal, students often choose to order custom essays from online platforms such as PapersOwl.com that provide writing assistance to help them with their project. These custom essays allow students to show their understanding of their topic, while also demonstrating to their instructors the level of application they achieved while completing the capstone project.

And if you get a good grade it’s a good reference for future academic work if asked about your academic achievements. You will find that you not only know how to investigate a subject but organize work to reach a deep understanding.

Another aspect is the presentation portion. Many students are great researchers and can write wonderful papers and get good grades. However, presentation is a necessary skill to apply in the real world. When you want to ask for a raise or get a proposal approved, often you’ll need to present factual data to back up your reasoning.

Don’t pass up this opportunity to showcase your skills to your university. With the right plan, you can develop a great project that can be a lot of fun. Try to devise a practical topic of interest and follow this guide to get the A you deserve. But as a long term project, you may need help with all or part of your assignment and think about buying a capstone project . When you’re burning the midnight oil sweating about a deadline, reach out to us at PapersOwl and we’ll come to your aid.

What is a Capstone Project in College?

Student studying on laptop with text What is A Capstone Course?

The capstone project in college is the apogee, or completion marker, of a student’s coursework leading to the culmination of their program with a degree in their chosen field of study.

The original definition of a capstone focuses on the actual stone placed at the top of a wall or building, marking the successful completion of the structure. It is a significant and celebrated piece of architecture, considered to be the most important of an entire construction project.

Similarly, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Associate Dean of Criminal Justice and Social Sciences Dr. Jeff Czarnec called the academic capstone project, whether in an undergraduate or graduate program, “the apex of all a student’s work done throughout their college career.”

There is an expectation that they have all the necessary skills and knowledge coming into the capstone course to be successful. “At this point, students have managed to pass all their course work leading up to the capstone,” said Dr. Thomas MacCarty , associate dean of social sciences programs  at SNHU. “It is the culmination of everything that has happened to them as students.”

Students have the opportunity to pick a research topic that is of interest to them and run with it. “After having to write research papers in all of their courses prior to [the capstone], the task is not one to dread, but to enjoy. It is their time to shine as students and to enjoy the journey,” MacCarty said.

The capstone is much more important than a requirement and three credits. It can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge mastery and creative thinking, which may help a graduate stand out from others vying for the same job.

What is Involved in a Capstone Project?

Dr. Jeff Czarnec with text Dr. Jeff Czarnec

“Students are expected to be ready to enter the world as professionals in their field upon completion of the capstone course,” said MacCarty.

As in many other university courses, the capstone is research-based; the difference being that the student chooses the topic early on, allowing them more freedom to conduct research on their own, unlike in other courses which are more guided. Capstone topics align with the specific discipline of program study. In the social sciences realm, “our focus is on human behavior and cognition, which may be different from a capstone course in business or STEM,” MacCarty said.

In a nutshell, a rough outline of a capstone, according to Czarnec, looks something like this:

Are Capstone Projects Difficult?

“Not necessarily,” said Czarnec. “It does force you to be efficient and very specific to topic. No fluff. Straight forward. Razor sharp. The capstone is more of an opportunity to catch your breath, retrace and pull up what you have learned in a more stress-free environment. It helps validate students as learners.”

Depending upon the major and course requirements, there may be opportunities to match students with outside contacts, not only to assist with the capstone project research and problem statement, but to also provide a networking community.

“Not every research project is, nor should they be, the same,” Czarnec said. “Everyone has a different approach.”

What is the Difference Between a Thesis and a Capstone Project?

Dr. Thomas MacCarty with text Dr. Thomas MacCarty

A capstone is similar to a thesis in that the starting point involves strengths that one needs for a thesis or dissertation work. A student needs to think about the skeletal structure of research and form their theory, hypothesis, and problem statement.

“While a capstone is certainly a scholarly piece of work and does share some aspects of a thesis,” said MacCarty. “The time and detail that is required of a master’s thesis is greater.”

A capstone paper may be 25 pages, where a thesis could be 100 or more, and is a more demanding research paper. If an undergraduate student chooses to further their education and enter into a doctoral program, the capstone project could be an invaluable tool in preparing for a thesis.

It’s All About Student Success

According to Czarnec, capstones of all programs are leading students to the end game. The goal is to develop well-rounded thinkers who can pull their work together in a coherent, articulate, well-organized fashion, while considering the demands of the profession or vocation in which they are interested.

The focus and intent of a capstone should be to create an effective device to assess and measure all that the students have learned throughout their program in an aggregate fashion so they can demonstrate their life-long vocational skills in a nice, neat package. “My goal is for students to leave the program confident about their skills and abilities,” said Czarnec.

According to MacCarty, capstone courses should be structured to support student success in fulfilling program requirements and allow them the opportunity to showcase their academic abilities and skills gained throughout their degree program.

Final Course Requirements (Comprehensive Exam and Capstones)

Every master's program has a required end of program requirement. Depending upon the program in which you are enrolled, this could be a comprehensive exam or a capstone course.

Before you can be registered for your end of program course you will need to:

Even for programs where Capstone courses have been approved by the VA as research-based programs, students using VA funding may have to carefully plan their course sequence to avoid “orphan” courses.  Please work with your Academic Advisor on your course sequence to plan ahead for this issue.

End of Program Assessment Types

End of Program assessment alternatives for master's students include the following options, which vary by the degree program:

See the EOP Manual for a full explanation of each option. Your Academic Plan will describe the End of Program Assessments that are available for your program.

For all capstone courses that begin after January 1, 2017, master's students must earn a B- (80%) or better on their capstone thesis/project/paper and a B- (80%) or better in their capstone course to pass the course. This policy aligns with the comprehensive exam, which also requires a B- (80%) or better to pass. Master's students must have at least a 3.0 GPA in order to graduate. Please see the End of Program Assessment Manual for more information.

For more information regarding these final course requirements, please refer to the End of Program Assessment Manual for Graduate Studies found in the Trefry Library in the Master's Studies Resource Center.

Senior Capstone

The American Studies senior capstone project ( AMS 190A , previously called Senior Thesis, is a great opportunity for students to produce a substantive and original piece of American studies work. The capstone project is optional. The goal is to synthesize and integrate what students have learned from their various courses. Most students will choose a research question, identify appropriate sources and methods, and decide on the most appropriate form for their finished project. You can take a more creative form (for example, a short film, an audio podcast, or another type of media project).

The capstone course provides students with a structured environment to pursue a project and to work with other American studies majors in a supportive and collaborative fashion. While students may elect to continue pursuing their capstone project for an additional quarter (as an independent study under the guidance of a faculty member) it is no longer required. Please note that students in other interdisciplinary majors may also take the course with the instructor’s permission.

Mary Baldwin University

Art Alumna Wins Prestigious Fulbright Fellowship

May 8, 2023

american university capstone project

Mary Baldwin University art alumna, Giselle Hobbs ’18, has been awarded a 2023–24 Fulbright Fellowship, one of the world’s most prestigious academic scholarships. It will enable her to spend the next academic year studying and completing an artistic residency at the École des Beaux-Arts Paris under internationally acclaimed art curator Alexia Fabre.

“I am honored and absolutely ecstatic to receive this wonderful news,” said Hobbs. Being chosen from a pool of about 40,000 applicants to participate in the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program “has left me awed and speechless.”

The Fulbright program offers grant awards to some of the world’s most talented students and young professionals to conduct research, study, and lecture in academic and professional fields in partnership with more than 140 countries. A presidentially appointed board of 12 administers around 8,000 scholarships annually. Recipients have gone on to become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and teachers. They include 62 Nobel laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, 78 MacArthur fellows, and thousands of leaders across the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

MBU art and art history department chair, Dr. Jim Sconyers, served as Hobbs’ primary academic advisor and said the program would be hard-pressed to find a more deserving candidate.

“Giselle’s studies at Mary Baldwin consistently reflected a superior level of accomplishment — in the department, across the university, and even globally,” he said. “She is the most driven student I’ve worked with during my 17 years of teaching. Her vision and determination are remarkable; the complexity of her objectives are evidence of her tenacity and fearlessness.”

Hobbs left high school early and enrolled at MBU in 2013 through its Program for the Exceptionally Gifted , which enables girls as young as 13 to attend college full-time. She capitalized on its emphasis on creating personalized, hands-on learning tracks, and completed three thesis projects; the famed three-year fundamental course in painting and drawing at the Angel Academy of Arts in Florence, Italy; fluency certificates in French, German, and Italian from the University of Virginia; and spent an academic year studying and drawing medicinal plants at the American School of Asuncion in Paraguay. She won numerous awards and honors before graduating at age 19, including the art department’s distinction in major, first place at the annual senior Capstone Festival, and a Russell Scholar Award, one of the university’s top academic honors.

american university capstone project

A glass and moss sculpture from Hobbs' 2022 exhibition, "Antibiome;" a painting Hobbs created during her time as a Virginia Museum of Fine Art graduate fellow.

Sconyers says Hobbs has continued to compile an impressive track record of success since leaving Mary Baldwin.

She earned a master’s degree in art history from Syracuse University, as well as a Florence Fellowship Full Graduate Award, and Jack Kent Graduate Award. Next came an MFA in art from Cornell University, where Hobbs explored the “intersection between anatomy, botany, bioengineering, and bio-art,” and participated in multiple solo and group art exhibitions. She was awarded a 2022–23 graduate fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts — where she was the lone painter among 15 fellow recipients.

Looking back at her many achievements, and forward to her upcoming Fulbright experience, Hobbs says her time at Mary Baldwin University laid the foundation for everything. She says the willingness of instructors — and Sconyers in particular — to listen to her ideas, offer advice, and stand by her side as she blazed a bold trail that was uniquely her own was incredible.

“I am and always will be thankful for all of the support and encouragement Dr. Sconyers has given me over the years,” said Hobbs. He was “always there, and that really made all the difference in the world for me.”

“She is the most driven student I’ve worked with in my 17 years of teaching. Her vision and determination are remarkable.”

Social Media vs. Actuality - Kelly Ascher

Visual Art Five collages

For my capstone project, I created a sequence of 5 colleges that share a common motif of social media in contrast with actuality. I've always relished collaging and sensed that this medium could effectively express how my brain works in a visual meaning.

pink-haired girl with tongue out

Kelly Ascher

My name is Kelly Ascher I am from Manhattan Beach, California.

Social Media vs. Actuality

woman smiling

This piece depicts a young woman standing confidently, wearing a bright smile and a heart-shaped emblem on her sleeve. The composition of the image is centered on the girl, but the shadows in the background serve to enhance the overall theme of the piece.

The shadows appear to support the girl, but they are also symbolic of the hidden parts of her personality that are not immediately visible. The image conveys a sense of mystery and intrigue, getting the viewer to look deeper and consider the different aspects of human emotions.

The heart on the girl's sleeve serves as a focal point. The girl's smile and confident pose suggest she is comfortable revealing her emotions, but the shadows in the background remind her that there is always more to a person than meets the eye.

girl with pink hair

The artwork in question features a young girl who, at first glance, appears to be content and at ease. However, upon closer inspection, the viewer can discern the complexities beneath the surface.

The girl is depicted spoon-feeding herself beads, symbolic of the various antidepressants she has tried to ease her mental health struggles. This imagery speaks to the ongoing battle many individuals face in their quest for wellness as they navigate treatments and medications available to them.

In addition to this striking central image, the artwork also features a series of quotes woven throughout the girl's hair.

Girl in the mirror

This piece shows a young girl standing in front of a mirror, seemingly lost in thought, as she examines her reflection. The complexity of the girl's emotions, as she contemplates the impact of modern beauty standards on her own sense of self-worth, is shown through the thoughts in the mirror. The girl can be seen making subtle adjustments to her appearance as she tries to conform to societal norms of beauty.

girl in front of mirror

This shows a young woman posed in front of a mirror, exuding confidence and poise. However, the composition of the piece offers contrast to the seemingly perfect image presented by the subject.

In the mirror's reflection, the viewer can see what lies beyond the front of perfection. The girl gazes back at her reflection with self-loathing and resentment, hinting at the inner emotional struggles beneath the surface.
