Project Management Helps Teams Work Together
A competent project manager pulls together all of the people involved in a project to ensure that tasks are done cooperatively and with regard to the tasks’ effects on other people’s project outcomes. For example, when a new building is being constructed, a project manager will schedule electrical wiring installation before scheduling installation of light fixtures and electrical equipment. If the lighting crew is scheduled before the structure is wired, the lighting crew wastes time arriving on site only to find they can’t perform their work.
Project managers also schedule meetings between various teams to foster cooperation and increased communication about projects. In the example above, the project manager may schedule a meeting during which the electricians explain the wiring, wall-switch operation and receptacle layout to the lighting contractors. Both teams communicate their needs and concerns to help the project move forward without delays.
Project Management Performs Vital Processes
According to the Project Management Institute, five main management processes are used to see a project through to completion. The five processes are:
- Monitoring and controlling
At the initiating phase, key individuals share ideas about a proposed project. In the planning stages, the project is defined and schedules are created to complete the project in a defined time frame. Execution of the project requires organizing and scheduling supplies, materials and workers to complete the project. Monitoring and controlling in project management is the process of inspecting work, crunching budget numbers and keeping track of deadlines. Closing the project involves site cleanup, turning over the project to the owner, collecting payments and scheduling meetings to discuss the lessons learned from a project.
Project Management Focuses on Key Areas of Knowledge
Project management draws on a diverse set of skills. While project managers don’t need to have in-depth knowledge of all key skill areas, they do need to have a basic understanding of the limitations and concerns of each knowledge area. Project managers need to view a project in its entirety and understand the relationships between costs, quality, supply procurement, human resources, communication, risk management and stakeholder management.
Project Management Requires Document Management
A competent project manager organizes all documentation including invoices, e-mails, bids, proposals, permits, and project changes. The project manager ensures documents are submitted on time and to the correct businesses, agencies or individuals. The project manager is also responsible for secure storage of all project documents.

Project management is a relatively new field of practice and study but has become a proven method to meet lofty goals and bring diverse groups of people together for a common purpose.

The capstone project, “Waste Management with Reward System” is designed to persuade waste producers to reuse and recycle more wastes by giving rewards to members who actively participate in the waste management campaign. The said project will serve as a platform where all waste management-related records will be managed and kept.
At present, waste problem is still prevalent. The government is in continuous search for the solution of the arising waste management problem. One of the major factor that contributes to waste management problem is the behaviour of the public or the waste producers in managing their own waste. Most of the people do not practice recycling for their recyclable waste materials and do not dispose their garbage properly. The local government must have an effective system to encourage the public to be more mindful of their own wastes.
To address the problems mentioned above, the researchers of the study proposed a Waste Management with Reward System to encourage waste producer communities to engage in recycling activities and make use of different junkshops and recycling centers. The system will allow members to register and conveniently search for junkshops and recycling centers to dispose their recyclable waste materials. The proposed system will also record garbage collection data that will serve as a basis for rewards. The system is a helpful tool in persuading communities to reuse and recycle waste that causes risk and hazards.
General Objective – the proponents of the project generally aim to design and develop a system that will help in encouraging communities to participate in waste recycling activities by giving rewards.
Specifically, the project aims the following objectives:
- To develop a system that will record garbage collection that will serve as a basis for rewards.
- The system will allow members to conveniently search location of junkshops and recycling centers.
- To design a system that will serve as a repository of all waste management relevant records.
- Test and improve the system in terms of functionality and reliability.
- To design a system that will make waste management easy, fast and rewarding.
- Design a project that will store the records properly and in organize manner using the database technology
The success of the project is significant for the following individuals or groups:
Local Government . The system will assist them in encouraging the public to recycle materials in order to prevent the risk and hazards cause by wastes. The system will also help the government to save allotted funds for waste management projects.
Community/Waste Producers . The system will help them to conveniently dispose their waste materials by searching nearby junkshops and recycling centers. The system will also encourage them to properly manage their garbage to receive rewards.
Researchers . The success of the study will help them further enhance their knowledge and skills in developing successful programs.
Future Researchers . The study will serve as their reference in developing updates for the system.

Waste materials are considered as a hazard and risk especially to human health. Wastes must be disposed properly to avoid possible serious effects. The study showed that there is a need of developing an effective system to encourage the public to actively participate and be responsible in managing their own waste. The proponents of the study developed a waste management with reward system and the result showed that the system met the needs and requirements of the respondents and the intended users.
The researchers concluded that the developed system is capable of persuading the public to reuse and recycle their wastes. The system will allow the users to conveniently search for junkshops and recycling centers where they can dispose their wastes. The system has a great potential in reducing the problems encountered in properly managing wastes.
The implementation of the Waste Management with Reward System is highly recommended by the researchers. The system will help and assist the local government in their campaign for waste management and will entice the public to reuse and recycle their recyclable waste by giving rewards. The researchers highly recommend the system for its efficiency and effectiveness. The intended users of the system should be armed with knowledge in order to correctly utilize the developed system.

Everyday pesticides and toxic chemicals leach into our environment from landfills and improper use of everyday home chemical products which create environmental problems. Other environmental waste includes improper disposal of electronics like cellphones and tv’s that end up in landfills or incinerators that take a massive amount of energy for disposal. Another environmental issue is factory farms that store animal waste in big lagoons that can stretch as far as multiple football fields that leak into waterways killing plants and animals. I am going to create an infographic file (at least 1400 x 800 – height x width pixels) and an animation file (1 min. – 1:45 mins. long) discussing major issues with environmental waste and want to focus on everyday solutions that would help reduce these problems and help clean up our environment. These two media objects will relate to one another by focusing on major issues related with environmental waste and will help provide possible solutions. The infographic will highlight problems and solutions while the animated file will visually show how these problems go into effect and how an understanding of possible solution would help reduce these issues. The long-term goal of reducing waste has become an ever increasingly conscious goal of our generation, as environmental sustainability and responsibility have become a contemporary societal goals. Despite the increasing prevalence of responsible waste techniques like recycling and composting, waste production has reached an all-time high with each American producing an average of 4.4 pounds of trash per day, contributing to a total national waste production of 254.1 million tons of wastes per year [1].

Although recycling is a common practice, it is still not accomplished with maximum efficiency, and composting is even less common in areas where it is not legally mandated. Food scraps and byproducts that could otherwise have been broken down in proper composting methods continue to pile up in landfills where they breakdown into methane gas that rises into the atmosphere, where it contributes to the greenhouse effect in an even more dramatic fashion than CO 2 . [2] In the plot below, provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, we can see that even at all-time high, our country only recycles about a third of the generated waste. [1]

The household waste tracking system aims to increase the sustainability and personal accountability of our consumer society through the quantification of household waste production. Like so many other facets of our lives, data and the knowledge attained from that data are the keys to reducing the impact of post-consumer waste and moving towards a better future. By implementing a household waste tracking system we will be able to generate individualized and big data that will allow us to incentive responsible waste, as well as optimize the waste collection process. Using the data generated from individual waste bin collections, local governments and waste management businesses can offer tax cuts, reduced pricing for responsible waste, or other financial incentives and subsidies to stimulate societal motivation. This motivation will cause consumers to not only take serious consideration of waste practices, but also modify greater shopping habits so that market goods become more environmentally responsible as a whole. Large scale location data, when tied with individual waste reception and time data will generate information on waste trends allowing waste management companies to tailor waste collection routes to reflect the habits of their customers. These smart waste collection routes will reduce the number of vehicles, and miles driven to complete the job, ultimately saving the company money and the environment by reducing fuel expenditures.
Although the aim of this project is not that of legislative or financial reform, ideally this system would be used to create a measure by which waste disposal costs are directly correlated to the amount of landfill waste disposed. Federal subsidizing or billing manipulation on the part of the waste management services could easily create a system by which customers become financially responsible for their waste habits. Additionally, this report will not analyze the deeper economic effects of the Household Waste Tracking System. The goal of this design project is ultimately focused on providing a system by which to gather the data that could be used to make these financial political opportunities possible. This report will discuss the background of the project, the design requirements, the history of the project and final implementation, as well as the projects performance, cost and operation.

Grad backs capstone project to reduce plastic waste
Frustrated by the high number of single-use water bottles ending up in landfill, a chemical engineering student team's proposed solution has earned $50,000 in financial backing from a venture capitalist.
Reduce, Carbonize, Adsorb, a Capstone Design project, is the winner of this year’s Palihapitiya Venture Creation Fund Award sponsored by Chamath Palihapitiya (BASc '99, electrical engineering), founder and CEO of Social Capital.
Besides the money split equally among team members Rachel Blanchard, Nicole Howard, Kris Ma and Steven Vilcacundo Molina, the award includes mentorship, training, and advice from successful entrepreneurs.
The students described the technology they developed to eliminate single-use water bottles from landing in the trash as a novel and high-performing thermal decomposition process that converts polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products into an activated carbon product.
