The story begins by introducing two best friends, George and Harold. They love to pull pranks and play tricks on others. They also write their own comic book about a crime-fighting superhero named Captain Underpants. George and Harold choose the name because superheroes always look like they are wearing underwear. They sell photocopies of each issue for 50 cents at school.

At an important school football game, they plan a series of pranks that result in the school being forced to forfeit the game: They put pepper in the cheerleaders’ pom-poms, making everyone sneeze; helium in the football, causing it to float away; bubble solution in the marching band’s instruments; and itching powder in the muscle rub. The next day, Harold and George are called into Principal Krupp’s office, where Krupp reveals he has a videotape of them pulling the pranks. He tells the boys that from now on they must do exactly as he tells them or he will show the tape to the angry football team.

Krupp forces Harold and George to wake up at 6:00am every day to do chores for him. They also must never smile during class, and they get extra homework. Desperate to escape these grueling punishments, George thinks he sees a solution when he orders a “3-D Hypno-Ring” from a catalog. The ring takes weeks to arrive, during which time Harold and George continue doing chores and extra homework. When the ring finally arrives, they use it to hypnotize Mr. Krupp , replacing the video with one of Harold’s little sister’s videotapes.

With Mr. Krupp hypnotized, the boys fall back into their pranking ways, having the principal act like a chicken, then a monkey. Then they order him to behave like Captain Underpants. Krupp takes off his pants and ties a curtain around his neck, making the boys laugh. Before they can stop him, he jumps out the window to fight crime.

The boys chase him on their skateboards to a bank robbery, where he confronts two mystified robbers. The police arrive and start to arrest Krupp along with the criminals, but the boys get him away. As they are trying to get Krupp back to school to change him back into the principal, they come across two robots stealing a mysterious crystal. Captain Underpants’s cape gets caught in the van’s door as it speeds away, dragging him behind it. The boys grab on and are taken with Captain Underpants to an abandoned warehouse, where they discover that the evil Doctor Diaper is planning to use the crystal to destroy the moon, destroying all the cities on Earth and allowing Doctor Diaper to become Earth’s ruler.

The boys hide, but Captain Underpants is tied up. The boys hatch a plan: They use fake doggie poop they find in the warehouse and a slingshot to make Doctor Diaper think he needs to be changed. While he is distracted, George and Harold destroy the robots and untie Captain Underpants. They examine the machine Doctor Diaper has built to destroy the moon and pull a level, thinking it is an off switch. It is a “self-destruct” switch.

Doctor Diaper returns, producing a ray gun. Angry, he intends to use the ray gun on the boys, but Captain Underpants shoots underwear at his face. They capture Doctor Diaper and escape the warehouse as it is destroyed. Leaving Doctor Diaper tied up outside the police station, they return to the school, deciding it is time to bring back Principal Krupp—but they have lost the Hypno-Ring’s instruction manual and have no idea how to bring Krupp back without it. George finds a vase of water and dumps it on Krupp’s head, breaking his hypnotic state.

Angry, Krupp decides to give the videotape to the football team, not knowing that the boys switched it. George finds the instruction manual for the ring, where he reads that the one thing you should never do is pour water over a hypnotized person’s head because it will cause them to go in and out of a trance at the sound of snapping fingers. He throws the manual away.

The football team watches the video, the Boomer the Purple Dragon sing-along tape, and they love it. They rename the team the “Purple Dragon Sing-A-Long Friends.”

George and Harold go back to their normal lives, making comics and playing pranks. One day, they see someone snap their fingers in front of Principal Krupp, who instantly becomes Captain Underpants. The boys watch him running across the football field in his underwear, the curtain tied around his neck again, to go fight crime.

Book Review: The Captain Underpants Series by Dav Pilkey

The book cover of the banned book series called “Captain Underpants”

Hoo-ha! Prepare to embark on a wacky journey into the world of children’s literature, where underpants reign supreme and humor is as pervasive as a whiff of a whoopee cushion. Yes, I’m talking about the wildly popular, slightly offbeat, and incredibly zany series “Captain Underpants” by Dav Pilkey.

I first stumbled upon this series when my niece showed me her treasured Captain Underpants book, her giggles echoing through the room as she flipped through the pages. That was my first brush with the wonderfully weird world of George, Harold, and their homemade superhero, Captain Underpants.

Book Summary of The Captain Underpants Series

The Captain Underpants Series centers around two mischievous fourth-graders, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who reside in Piqua, Ohio. The boys are avid comic book creators, and their most notable creation is the aptly named superhero, Captain Underpants. Things take an unexpected turn when George and Harold hypnotize their cantankerous and bossy principal, Mr. Krupp. The hypnotism accidentally brings their comic book hero to life, and Mr. Krupp becomes the real-life Captain Underpants, complete with superhuman strength, durability, and the ability to fly, thanks to some alien “Extra-Strength Super Power Juice.”

The adventures that follow are nothing short of hilariously absurd. From battles with turbo toilets to run-ins with the Dandelion of Doom, George, Harold, and Captain Underpants face off against various forms of evil.

Their school nemesis, Melvin, is a constant thorn in their side, trying to get them in trouble whenever he can. The other adults in the series, often portrayed as mean or bumbling, add to the chaos and hilarity, some even boasting their own strange superpowers.

Book Review of The Captain Underpants Series

Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series is an absolute riot, delivering a bellyful of laughs with every page. But don’t let the potty humor and irreverent jokes fool you. This series is a wonderful blend of wit, adventure, and heart. The narrative cleverly intersperses challenging vocabulary amidst the fart jokes, making it a delightful read for both reluctant and advanced young readers. It might have a reputation for being infantile, but the truth is, it’s pretty nuanced.

The good-vs-evil plots balance humor and action with empathy and empowerment, making it a hit with young readers.

The Captain Underpants Series Rating

My Rating: 8.5/10. The Captain Underpants Series earns an 8.5 for its zany humor, heartfelt adventures, and innovative approach to introducing challenging vocabulary to children.

Amazon Rating : 4.9/5. The series has been well received by Amazon customers for its ability to engage young readers with its unique blend of humor and adventure.

Goodreads Rating : 4.45/5. Goodreads readers appreciate the series for its delightful illustrations and engaging storyline.

About the author dav pilkey.

David Murray “Dav” Pilkey Jr . is a renowned American cartoonist, author, and illustrator of children’s literature. Born on March 4, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, Pilkey was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia as a child.

Often reprimanded for his behavior in class, he spent much time at a desk in the school hallway, where he created the Captain Underpants character. Pilkey is also known for his other children’s book series, including the Dog Man series, Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot series, and the Dumb Bunnies series.

Pilkey’s journey to becoming an acclaimed children’s book author is a fascinating one. His first book, “World War Won,” was inspired by the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Pilkey wrote the book in 1987 as part of a national competition for student authors and won in his age category. This victory led to the publication of his first book.

In 2002, Pilkey published “ The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby ,” his first complete graphic novel. The novel was a major success, appearing at No. 6 on the USA Today bestseller list for all books, both adult and children’s, and was also a New York Times bestselling book for Children’s Middle Grade.

There'll be no silence in the library once readers get hold of this somewhat classier alternative to Barf-o-Rama books and...

In the fine old tradition of James Marshall's Cut-Ups, Pilkey ( God Bless the Gargoyles , 1996, etc.) introduces George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two usually responsible fourth-graders, as in ``whenever anything bad happened, George and Harold were usually responsible.''

KATT VS. DOGG

KATT VS. DOGG

by James Patterson & Chris Grabenstein ; illustrated by Anuki López ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 2019

A waggish tale with a serious (and timely) theme.

An age-old rivalry is reluctantly put aside when two young vacationers are lost in the wilderness.

Anthropomorphic—in body if definitely not behavior—Dogg Scout Oscar and pampered Molly Hissleton stray from their separate camps, meet by chance in a trackless magic forest, and almost immediately recognize that their only chance of survival, distasteful as the notion may be, lies in calling a truce. Patterson and Grabenstein really work the notion here that cooperation is better than prejudice founded on ignorance and habit, interspersing explicit exchanges on the topic while casting the squabbling pair with complementary abilities that come out as they face challenges ranging from finding food to escaping such predators as a mountain lion and a pack of vicious “weaselboars.” By the time they cross a wide river (on a raft steered by “Old Jim,” an otter whose homespun utterances are generally cribbed from Mark Twain—an uneasy reference) back to civilization, the two are BFFs. But can that friendship survive the return, with all the social and familial pressures to resume the old enmity? A climactic cage-match–style confrontation before a worked-up multispecies audience provides the answer. In the illustrations (not seen in finished form) López plops wide-eyed animal heads atop clothed, more or less human forms and adds dialogue balloons for punchlines.

KENNY & THE DRAGON

KENNY & THE DRAGON

by Tony DiTerlizzi & illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 5, 2008

Reports of children requesting rewrites of The Reluctant Dragon are rare at best, but this new version may be pleasing to young or adult readers less attuned to the pleasures of literary period pieces. Along with modernizing the language—“Hmf! This Beowulf fellow had a severe anger management problem”—DiTerlizzi dials down the original’s violence. The red-blooded Boy is transformed into a pacifistic bunny named Kenny, St. George is just George the badger, a retired knight who owns a bookstore, and there is no actual spearing (or, for that matter, references to the annoyed knight’s “Oriental language”) in the climactic show-fight with the friendly, crème-brulée-loving dragon Grahame. In look and spirit, the author’s finely detailed drawings of animals in human dress are more in the style of Lynn Munsinger than, for instance, Ernest Shepard or Michael Hague. They do, however, nicely reflect the bright, informal tone of the text. A readable, if denatured, rendition of a faded classic. (Fantasy. 9-11)

The Creative Behind the Books

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories. He spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books–the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to illustrate and write. He won a national competition in 1986 and the prize was the publication of his first book, World War Won. He made many other books before being awarded the 1998 California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath, which was published in 1994, and in 1997 he won the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy. The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, published in 2002, was the first complete graphic novel spin-off from the Captain Underpants series and appeared at #6 on the USA Today bestseller list for all books, both adult and children’s, and was also a New York Times bestseller. It was followed by The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung Fu Cavemen from the Future and Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers, both USA Today bestsellers. The unconventional style of these graphic novels is intended to encourage uninhibited creativity in kids. His stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, tolerance, and the triumph of the good-hearted. Dav loves to kayak in the Pacific Northwest with his wife.

Year Published

This book has been reviewed by Focus on the Family’s marriage and parenting magazine . It is the fourth book in the “Captain Underpants” series.

Plot Summary

Fourth-graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins have created their own comic superhero named Captain Underpants. They begin this book by drawing a comic for readers that recaps how they developed the character. They also show how they accidentally brought it to life when they hypnotized their principal. Now whenever someone snaps his or her fingers, Mr. Krupp turns into Captain Underpants and fights crime wearing only his briefs and a curtain for a cape.

George and Harold are up to their usual pranks. They rig the fan in the teachers lounge so staff members become covered in sticky paste and packing peanuts. The science teacher, who has seen enough madness at the school, decides to resign.

Meanwhile, far away in New Swissland, the illustrious scientist Professor Pippy Pee-Pee Poopypants has created various devices to shrink and enlarge objects. He decides to bring his inventions to America. None of the major universities pay any attention to his inventions because they can’t stop laughing at his name. Finally, since he’s running out of money, Professor Poopypants answers Principal Krupps’ ad for an elementary science teacher.

George, Harold and their classmates tease the professor mercilessly about his name. He decides to impress them by bringing in an invention called the Gerbil Jogger 2000. It’s a small, robot-like device with an egg-shaped compartment at the top. When he inserts a gerbil, the long legs of the Gerbil Jogger 2000 spring into action. Professor Poopypants believes he’s finally earned the kids’ respect.

Then he finds a copy of one of George and Harold’s Captain Underpants cartoons in which they mock him and his inventions. In a rage, the professor uses his growth ray to make a gigantic Gerbil Jogger 2000. Then he shrinks the school building, with all of the kids inside, and carries it with him. He demands a pencil, which he also enlarges. As news crews watch, he begins to write silly name charts on billboards. His revenge is to make everyone change his or her name to a silly one, based on the first and last letters in their current names. If they comply, they will not be shrunk like the children and staff of Jerome Horwitz Elementary.

George and Harold know they have to enlist the help of Captain Underpants. They snap their fingers, and Mr. Krupp takes on his hero persona. He’s still tiny, so the boys have to get the professor’s growth ray. They make Captain Underpants as large as the Gerbil Jogger 2000. Then the hero and the professor do battle. Captain Underpants wins, and Professor Poopypants goes to jail. He writes to the boys from prison, saying he’s sorry and that he’s changing his name so no one will ever make fun of him again. The new name he’s chosen is Tippy Tinkletrousers.

The boys dump water on Principal Krupp’s head to revive him, but it isn’t long before a teacher snaps her fingers in his presence. Captain Underpants re-emerges and swoops off to fight crime with his signature cry, “Tra-la-laaaa!”

Christian Beliefs

The narrator says the science teacher job opening in the paper is like a message from heaven for the professor. One chapter title includes, “Are you there, God?” (It appears to be spoofing the old Judy Blume book, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

Other Belief Systems

Authority roles.

George and Harold pull a prank on their teachers. Principal Krupp will stop at nothing to catch the boys. When Krupp becomes Captain Underpants, he and the boys work together to fight bad guys. The teachers blatantly mock George and Harold when Mr. Krupp bans the boys from the field trip. Professor Poopypants tries to make the world a better place, but the mockery he receives because of his name eventually drives him mad.

Profanity & Violence

The word heck appears once or twice. Several humorous warning pages appear, stating that extremely graphic violence will be shown in the pages that follow. What actually appears is mild cartoon violence, such as a character being punched in the face or head-butted. No blood or serious injuries are depicted.

Sexual Content

Additional Comments

Bathroom humor and general grossness: Underpants are mentioned frequently. Silly cartoon drawings, which appear frequently throughout the book, depict Captain Underpants as a pudgy, bald man wearing fitted white briefs and a red cape. The large underpants never reveal any hint of the anatomy beneath. George and Harold rearrange the letters on a sign so it mentions farting. The professor’s name, along with some of the other silly names on his billboards, refer to boogers, anatomy (such as butt and tushie ) and bodily excretions (such as poop and pee ).

Captain Underpants #6

Captain underpants and the big, bad battle of the bionic booger boy, part 1: the night of the nasty nostril nuggets.

George and Harold are "C" students (and bad spellers), but they are very good at "saving the entire planet from the nasty forces of unrelenting evil" and also at ketchup-toilet pranks. Unfortunately, they can't save Melvin Sneedly from getting paddled by his bionic hamster. But, frankly, they wouldn't want to, because besides being the school brainiac, Melvin is also a tattletale. When his robot-making hobby backfires horribly, Melvin transforms himself into the Bionic Booger Boy instead of a bionic superboy. Can Captain Underpants save everyone from this "greenish, glistening behemoth?"
