Speech on School Anniversary

Celebrating a school anniversary is a momentous occasion! It’s a time to honor the school’s history, achievements, and the community it has built.

As a student, this event gives you a chance to reflect on your school’s journey. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the hard work and dedication that’s been poured into your education.

1-minute Speech on School Anniversary

Good day to all of you! Today is a day of joy and celebration, as we mark our school’s anniversary. On this day, years ago, our beloved school opened its doors. It’s a special day that reminds us of our journey, our growth, and our unity as a school family.

From the first brick laid to the last smile shared, our school has been a place where dreams are born and nurtured. It’s a place where we learn, not just from books, but from each other. Every corner of our school has a story to tell. Stories of friendships, stories of triumphs, and stories of hard work and dedication.

Our teachers, the guiding lights, they inspire, motivate, and guide us. They bring out the best in us. They are the backbone of our school and we owe a big part of our successes to them. Today, we honor, appreciate, and celebrate them.

Yes, we’ve faced challenges, but every setback has been a setup for a comeback. We’ve learned to rise above and grow stronger. These experiences have taught us the true meaning of resilience. In the face of difficulties, we’ve learned that we are stronger together.

Today, we celebrate not just our school’s anniversary, but also the spirit of our school. The spirit of learning, the spirit of growing, the spirit of unity, and the spirit of resilience. As we look forward to the future, let’s remember that we are the ones who shape it. Let’s carry the spirit of our school forward, always reaching for the stars.

So here’s to our school, to every student, teacher, and staff member. Here’s to every success, every lesson learned, every friendship made, and every memory shared. Happy Anniversary to our school!

2-minute Speech on School Anniversary

Ladies, gentlemen, and children, we gather here today to celebrate an important day. It’s the birthday of our school, a day filled with joy and pride. This is not just about a building made of bricks and concrete. It’s about the dreams, hopes, and bright future that this place holds for us.

Let’s think about this school as a tree. Years ago, it was a tiny sapling, planted with care and hope. With time, it grew into a strong tree, surviving the harsh winds and heavy rains. This school, like a tree, has stood firm, growing and blossoming every year. Today, it’s a grand tree of knowledge, providing shade and fruit to many.

The roots of our school tree are the values and principles it stands for – respect, honesty, and hard work. These values have been nurturing us, helping us to grow into better individuals. We learn more than just ABCs and 123s here. We learn how to be good human beings, how to respect others, and how to face challenges bravely.

The trunk of our school tree represents our teachers. Just as the trunk supports the tree, our teachers support us. They teach us, guide us, and inspire us. They are the pillars of strength, always ready to help us. It’s because of them that we are able to reach for the stars.

The branches of our school tree are the different subjects and activities we have. From maths and science to sports and arts, there’s something for everyone. These branches provide us with opportunities to discover our talents, interests, and passions. They help us to explore and learn, to grow and shine.

The leaves and fruits of our school tree are the students. We are the ones who add life and color to this place. With our energy and enthusiasm, we keep this tree vibrant and fresh. Every year, students leave the school, making way for new ones, just as leaves fall and new ones grow. We are the bearers of the school’s legacy, carrying its name forward.

So, on this special day, let’s take a moment to thank our school for all that it has given us. For the knowledge, the values, the memories and the friendships. Let’s remember that we are the fruits of this wonderful tree. And just as a tree spreads its seeds, let’s spread the values and lessons we’ve learned here.

As we celebrate this day, let’s make a promise. A promise to always uphold the honor of our school. To strive for excellence in everything we do. To be kind, respectful, and honest. And to keep the school flag flying high.

In conclusion, this school is more than just a building. It’s a home, a family, a guide, and a beacon of hope. Happy anniversary to our beloved school. May it continue to grow and blossom, spreading the light of knowledge and wisdom. Thank you.

Birthday Speech

A birthday is a special day to celebrate the anniversary of one's birth.

It is a time to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the future.

Birthdays are often celebrated with cake, presents, and loved ones.

Many people choose to celebrate their birthday with a party or gathering.

Some people prefer to celebrate their birthday with a quiet day of reflection.

Birthdays can also be a time to set new goals and make resolutions for the coming year.

Some cultures have specific traditions or customs associated with birthdays.

A birthday is an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the gift of life.

Birthdays are a reminder to be grateful for the people and experiences that have shaped our lives.

It's a time to be with friends and family, to make memories and to look forward to another year of life.

A birthday is a day to celebrate the gift of life and all the wonderful things that come with it. It's a day to reflect on the past year, think about the things that made you smile, the people you've met, the places you've been and the experiences you've had. But it's also a day to look forward to the future, to set new goals, make new plans and dream big.

And what's a birthday without a birthday cake and presents? A birthday cake is like a symbol of celebration, a sweet reminder of the special day and all the sweet memories that come with it. And the presents, are a reminder that we have people in our lives that care about us, who want to make us happy and make our day special.

But a birthday is not just about the celebration, it's also about the people we share it with. It's a day to be with our loved ones, to make memories and to have fun. So, let's raise a glass and make a toast to another year of life, to all the wonderful things it holds and to all the people who make it special.

And let's make this birthday interactive, let's take a moment to think about the things that made you smile the most in the past year, share it with the people around you, and make a wish for the coming year

A birthday is a special day to celebrate the anniversary of one's birth. It's a day to reflect on the past year, think about the things that made you smile, the people you've met, the places you've been and the experiences you've had. But it's also a day to look forward to the future, to set new goals, make new plans and dream big.

Reflection on the Past Year

On your birthday, it's important to take a moment to reflect on the past year. Think about the things that made you happy, the moments that brought a smile to your face, and the people who have been there for you. For me, one of the most memorable moments of the past year was when I travelled to a new country with my family. The experience was full of new sights, sounds, and flavours, and it reminded me of the beauty of the world and the importance of travelling.

Setting New Goals

A birthday is also a time to set new goals for the coming year. It's a time to think about what you want to achieve and what changes you want to make in your life. One of my goals for the next year is to learn a new skill, such as cooking or a new language. I believe that setting goals is important because it gives you something to work towards and helps you grow as a person.

Celebration

Without a party, a birthday isn't truly celebrated. Without birthday cake and presents, what is a birthday? A birthday cake serves as a lovely remembrance of the big day and all the wonderful memories that go along with it as well as a sign of celebration. The gifts, on the other hand, serve as a reminder that we have people in our life who love us, care about us, and wish to brighten our day.

But a birthday is not just about the celebration, it's also about the people we share it with. It's a day to be with our loved ones, to make memories and to have fun. So, let's make this birthday interactive and unique, let's play some games, have a themed party or make a scrapbook of our past year together. We can also plan a surprise for someone else, like visiting an orphanage or an old age home to spread happiness. I absolutely loved visiting an NGO for the underprivileged kids on my birthday last year. I got them new clothes and food as gifts and we all cut my birthday cake together. Even though the kids didn't know me, we all became friends quickly and had a great time together.

In conclusion, a birthday is a special day to celebrate the gift of life and all the wonderful things that come with it. It's a day to reflect on the past year, think about the things that made you smile, the people you've met, the places you've been and the experiences you've had. But it's also a day to look forward to the future, to set new goals, make new plans and dream big.

Top Tips for a Perfect Birthday Speech

speech on school birthday

Birthdays are a special time to celebrate and reflect on the past year, and a birthday speech is a great way to express your gratitude and appreciation for the love and support of your friends and family. While it is one of the most nerve-racking parts of birthdays, there are ways to make it simple and meaningful.

To make your speech more organized and special, here are some tips and ideas for giving a birthday speech:

1. Start Off With a Greeting

2. share memories, 3. talk about your life journey, express your gratitude , share your hopes and plans for the future, end with a meaningful quote or personal message.

Greeting the guests and thanking them for coming to celebrate your special day is a warm and gracious way to start your birthday speech. It sets the tone for the rest of the speech and lets the guests know that you are glad they are there. Also thank your family members who organized the party.

You can start your greeting by saying something like:

“Hello everyone, and thank you all for coming to celebrate this special day with me. For my mom and dad who set up this event, thank you so much. It means so much to me to have all of you here, and I am so grateful for your love and support.”

Sharing memories and moments with the guests can be a great way to personalize and make your birthday speech meaningful. You can talk about special occasions, trips, or everyday moments that you have shared with the guests, and how they have impacted your life.

Here are a few examples of what you might say:

“I have so many great memories with all of you. I will never forget the last time we shared drinks back in college. It’s amazing how the years have passed. These moments have meant a lot to me and I am grateful to have such amazing friends who have always been there for me, especially during difficult times.”

“My family has always been there for me, through all the ups and downs. They have supported me in everything I do and have never failed to stand by me. I don’t know what I would do without them. Thank you for everything.”

Talking about your accomplishments and the positive impact you have had on your life and the lives of others is a great way to reflect on your personal growth and the ways in which you have made a difference in the world. It can be a meaningful and inspiring part of your birthday speech. You may also crack a joke while you talk about your experiences.

“Over the past year, I have accomplished a lot and have grown as a person. I am proud of the progress I have made and the positive impact I have had on my own life and the lives of others. Whether it’s through my work, my relationships, or my personal endeavors, I am grateful for the opportunities and for another year to come.”

“I am proud of my accomplishments and grateful for the blessings, as well as to my supportive friends and family. Because of all of you, I have been able to pursue my dreams and make a positive difference in the world. I’ll be forever thankful for your love and support.”

4. End Speech With a Sincere Message

Ending your birthday speech with a heartfelt and sincere message is a great way to leave a lasting impression on your audience and to express gratitude.

Here are some tips for crafting sincere and meaningful closing remarks:

Thank the guests for coming to celebrate your special day and for their love and support.

Look forward to the possibilities that the coming year will bring and express your enthusiasm for what is to come.

Consider using a quote or a personal message to end your speech. It can be a powerful and memorable way to wrap up the occasion.

Giving a meaningful birthday speech is a special way to celebrate your day and show appreciation for the people in your life. These tips and ideas can help you create a speech that is personal, organized, and reflects your own unique personality and experiences.

Whether your speech focuses on your accomplishments, future plans, or special moments with others, as long as it is sincere and genuine, it will surely be a meaningful and memorable way to celebrate your special day.

Birthday Activities for Teletherapy

Imagine this: You're greeting your students at the beginning of a virtual speech therapy session when one of them exclaims, "It's my birthday!" Eeek. Wish you'd known sooner. You're feeling a little guilty as you scramble for some way to recognize your student's special day.

So it probably doesn't take a ton of imagining, because like every SLP ever, this has probably happened to you. Student birthdays come around pretty regularly... thanks to the caseload size of most SLPs.

As we SLPs do often, we pivot. We figure out something and make it work. But wouldn't it be nice to skip that moment of struggle and have a list of quick, virtual activities that you can use to give a little birthday shout-out to your student?

Check out these ways to digitally celebrate birthdays in teletherapy with students of all ages! And since these ideas are all just a click away, you can use them on any device for in-person sessions too. In fact, you'll be able to pull them up so quickly that it'll seem like it was alllll part of the plan.

Birthday-Themed Activities for Younger Students

This simple Tiny Tap activity allows students to click through a birthday scene while discussing vocabulary and concepts such as opening presents and singing Happy Birthday. Great for your youngest students!

Preschoolers may enjoy this Birthday Candle Counting activity on ABCYa to find out how old each person is turning. Also on the ABCYa website is this Make a Cupcake Activity!

PBS Kids has a Daniel Tiger Birthday Buddy activity that includes multiple digital activities for celebrating a birthday, including decorating for a party and making cupcakes. The activities actually take the perspective of being a "birthday buddy" to someone that's having a birthday, so they're perfect for including all members of a group!

This Boom Card deck ( available on the Boom Learning platform but free for email subscribers ) helps you personalize the celebration by adding details like the student's name, date of birth, age, and birthday wish as they follow directions to set up a virtual party– complete with the playing of "Happy Birthday!" to sing along to!

Birthday Boom Card Activity for Speech Therapy

Digital stickers are a versatile activity for any teletherapy session, including birthdays! Students can work together to plan and set up a virtual birthday party by layering the digital stickers on top of a photo background. To make it even more individualized, you can use a photo of the student's house and add the faces of family or group members too!

Digital Stickers for a Virtual Birthday Party in Speech Therapy

Email subscribers can get a set of birthday stickers in the freebie library , and I have another set available in my store!

For any of these activities, younger students love it if you're dressed for the occasion! Be prepared with a party hat, party horn, and some balloons in your desk drawer for birthdays. I've even shown my own kids' Melissa & Doug Birthday Cake set on camera before, and this awesome site has personalized birthday songs for thousands of names that you can play!

As with any theme, you can always find a book to coordinate! A few titles to look for include If you Give a Pig a Party , There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Birthday Cake , and How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Birthday? Use a document camera to show the book, play a read-aloud from YouTube, screen share an ebook website, or display the illustrations as a virtual background if you're super tech savvy!

Birthday-Themed Activities for Older Students

If the above ideas are too "little kid-ish" for your middle and high school students, don't worry. There are a few ways you can bring some birthday fun into their speech therapy sessions too!

The beauty of the virtual setting is that you have the ability to take the party anywhere! For many platforms (like Zoom), you can change the virtual background to whatever you want... an arcade, basketball court, top of a mountain, you name it! All you need is a Google Image search, and you have the party backdrop.

Then allow the birthday boy or girl to choose what else goes in party background, such as people (real friends or family, famous people, or other characters), decorations, and food! Thanks to Jenelle Gococo from @sayspeech for this awesome idea!

If you know me, you know that fill-in-the-blank stories are a go-to for a fun-filled session. Grab a FREE birthday-themed story here , and let the laughter roll as you and your students create a hilarious birthday narrative.

Birthday Speech Therapy Activity for Older Students

Personality quizzes are always a fun way for students to share about themselves and get to know one another. They also elicit so much natural conversation! This one from Scholastic asks a handful of questions to determine a student's "birthday style."

Group Games 101 hosts a huge set of birthday-themed trivia questions , which include answers that are hidden until you click on them. Perfect for screen sharing! This birthday quiz from Beano asks questions about birthday traditions from around the world... and has real photos!

And to go out with a bang– confetti! Chrome extensions make it possible to do just about anything virtually, and throwing confetti is no exception! A couple examples include Confetti Cannon and Confetti Confetti All Over . The best part? No vacuum required!

We've all experienced the feeling of being unprepared for a student's birthday. Luckily there are tons of teletherapy activities that you can plan to use at the drop of a hat to virtually celebrate birthdays. With a quick pivot in your plans, you can make your student feel special, no matter how old they're turning... or how prepared you are!

Today, we gather to celebrate not just a birthday, but a woman who has been a pillar of strength, a beacon of wisdom and the embodiment of love in our lives. She is none other than my mother.

Mom, on your special day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared together. From my first steps to my first heartbreak, you’ve been there at every juncture, providing guidance and comfort. Your unwavering support has been the bedrock of my confidence and the wind beneath my wings.

Your accomplishments are a testament to your resilience, determination, and indomitable spirit. As a young woman, you charted a path that was not always easy, but always worthwhile. As a mother, you’ve shown us the meaning of selfless love and sacrifice. Your ability to juggle various roles – a loving wife, a nurturing mother, a successful professional, and a compassionate friend – is simply awe-inspiring.

Through your actions, you’ve taught me the importance of kindness, respect, and humility. You’ve shown me that true strength lies in vulnerability, and true success lies in contentment. You’ve shown that life isn’t about the destination, but about the journey, and every day with you is a journey worth treasuring.

As we stand here today celebrating your life, I want to thank you. Thank you for your love that knows no bounds, for your patience that never wavers, and for your wisdom that never fails. Thank you for being the guiding light in my life.

On this special day, as we celebrate your life, I also want to promise you that I will strive every day to live by the values you’ve instilled in me. To be the person that you’ve shown me it’s possible to be. Mom, you are my hero, my role model, my best friend – and I am so proud to be your child.

Birthday Speech for Dad

I stand before you today to celebrate a man who is not just the backbone of our family, but also my mentor, my friend, and my hero. A man who has lived his life with great character, profound wisdom, and tireless dedication. This man is my dear father.

Dad, on your special day, I want you to know how incredibly proud I am to be your child. From childhood to adulthood, you’ve been my guiding star, always leading the way with your wisdom and love. Whether it was teaching me to ride a bike, introducing me to your love for jazz music, or supporting me when I decided to pursue my unconventional career path, you’ve been there every step of the way.

Your love for books and the outdoors has deeply influenced me. I remember those weekend hikes we did together, where you taught me to appreciate nature and to live in the moment. Your love for literature has instilled in me a passion for reading and writing, which has shaped who I am today. And oh, how can I forget our funny dance-offs on family vacations? Those memories are etched in my heart, and they bring a smile to my face every time I think of them.

What strikes me most about you, dad, is your humility and kindness. You’ve taught me that real strength is not about being the loudest in the room, but about being the kindest. You’ve exemplified the importance of integrity, hard work, and respect for others. I am eternally grateful for these priceless life lessons.

Dad, you’re a man of few words, but your actions have always screamed volumes. Your unwavering love for mom, your dedication to our family, and your tireless efforts at work have shown me what it means to be responsible, committed, and loving. You are the embodiment of ‘Actions speak louder than words.’

As we gather to celebrate your special day, I want to thank you, Dad. Thank you for your unending patience, your constant support, and your unconditional love. Thank you for being a guiding light, a pillar of strength, and a source of inspiration.

On this momentous day, I want to make a promise to you. I promise to uphold the values you’ve instilled in me, to live a life of purpose just as you have, and to make you proud. Dad, you are my hero, my inspiration, and my guiding light.

Happy Birthday, Dad. Here’s to many more years of shared laughter, love, and timeless memories. I am beyond blessed to call you my father. Thank you for being you.”

Sweetheart, on this special day, I want to express how profoundly you’ve impacted my life. Since the day we met, you’ve been a source of joy, inspiration, and change. Your love has transformed me into a better man, kinder, more understanding, and patient.

Over the years, we’ve built a treasure trove of memories, each one more precious than the last. Do you remember our first vacation together? We were lost in a foreign city, with no understanding of the local language. And yet, in the midst of that chaos, there was laughter, togetherness, and a promise of many more adventures to come. You turned a potential disaster into a fond memory, and that’s just one of the many reasons why I adore you.

During challenging times, your unwavering support has been my rock. You’ve stood by me like a warrior, encouraging me to fight my battles and celebrating my victories. Your faith in me, even in times I doubted myself, has made me stronger and more resilient.

And let’s not forget about your cooking experiments. While not all dishes make it to the ‘Hall of Fame’, your undying enthusiasm and the joy you find in feeding us your creations is simply endearing.

That’s what you do, my love – you turn potential disasters into unforgettable memories.

Over the years, you’ve stood by me through the highs and the lows. You’ve been my rock during challenging times and my cheerleader in my moments of triumph. You’ve always said that behind every great man is a surprised mother-in-law, but I’d like to add that beside every great woman is a supportive and loving husband.

Your sense of humor, my love, is one of the things that I adore the most about you. The way you can make me laugh, even on the roughest days, is truly a gift. And let’s not forget your infamous ‘dad jokes’ – they’re so bad, they’re good.

But beyond all that, what I admire the most about you is your kind heart. You love selflessly and wholeheartedly, and I am beyond grateful to be the recipient of that love. Your generosity, your integrity, and your resilience inspire me every day.

You were always the more adventurous one and I, your enthusiastic accomplice. And when we got into trouble (which was often), you always took the blame so I wouldn’t get scolded. These are priceless moments that I will cherish forever.

As we grew up, you turned into this outstanding woman. I saw you face challenges head-on, never giving up, always fighting, and emerging stronger. We are gathered here to celebrate an extraordinary individual, a man of unwavering character, a source of constant inspiration and hilarity, and, lucky me, my brother. Today, my dear brother marks another milestone as he celebrates his [birthday number] birthday.

My dear brother, our shared history is filled with humor, adventure, and the unique bond only siblings understand. Do you remember when we used to build forts out of sofa cushions in the living room? You, the fearless leader, and I, your willing accomplice, ready to defend our fortress at all costs. Those simple days of imagination and camaraderie have shaped who we are today.

Over the years, I’ve watched you grow into a man of integrity and kindness. You are the perfect blend of tenacity and compassion, pursuing your goals with a fierce determination, yet always making time to lend a helping hand to those in need. Your laughter is infectious, your spirit, indomitable, and your infamous ‘brotherly advice‘, though occasionally unsolicited, is a constant source of wisdom.

Your resilience, dear brother, is a beacon of inspiration. Through life’s ups and downs, you have shown me the power of optimism and perseverance. You’ve taught me to see challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities for growth. And for all those times you’ve been my protector, my guide, and my supporter, I am eternally grateful.

I admire your strength, your courage, and your unwavering sense of humor that can lighten up even the darkest of days. You are my role model, my confidante, and most importantly, my dear friend. Your love and support have been invaluable to me, and I am beyond blessed to call you my brother.

So, on this special day, I wish you a year filled with joy, success, and fulfillment. As you embark on a new chapter of your life, may every step lead you closer to your dreams.

Happy Birthday, dear brother. Here’s to a future of shared dreams, endless laughter, and a beautiful journey together. I love you more than words can express, and I am eternally grateful for your love and companionship. Thank you for being you, and for being mine.

Happy Birthday, my dear brother. Here is to us, to a future filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures. I love you, now and always.”

Birthday Speech for Mother in Law

Today, we gather to celebrate not just a birthday, but a remarkable woman who has touched our lives in countless ways. Today, it’s my mother-in-law’s [birthday number] birthday.

Mother-in-law, you hold a unique place in my life, astoundingly managing to be a second mother, a dear friend, and a wise mentor simultaneously. Your kindness, grace, and strength are qualities I admire and strive to emulate.

I recall the first time I came over for dinner, nervous as can be, and you, with your usual warmth, put me at ease instantly. The burnt lasagna that night became our running joke and a symbol of our bond. Your ability to make light of an overcooked meal, and turn it into a fond memory, is but a testament to your unwavering positivity.

Your generosity and patience know no bounds, like the time you taught me your secret apple pie recipe, even though it took me several attempts (and a few kitchen disasters) to get it right. You never lost patience, and I finally did master that recipe, it’s a testament to your patience and my resilience.

And let’s not forget the time you squared up with that aggressive seagull at the beach to protect our picnic. That day, you showed us your hidden ninja skills and made us laugh until we cried.

Your wisdom, resilience, and infectious humor light up our lives. You are a pillar of strength, a beacon of wisdom, and a bundle of joy. Your presence in our lives is a blessing that we are eternally grateful for.

As we toast to another year, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your love, patience, and guidance. I wish you a year filled with happiness, health, and endless moments of joy. May your life continue to be an inspiring journey filled with love and laughter.

Happy Birthday, dear mother-in-law. Here’s to a future filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures. We have a small token of our affection to present, a [gift], as a symbol of our love and appreciation. I hope that it brings you as much joy as you bring to all of us.

Happy Birthday, and here’s to many more years of shared memories, hearty laughter, and a beautiful journey together. We love you, now and always.”

Birthday Speech for Father in Law

We gather here today to honor a man of remarkable character, wisdom, and spirit, my father-in-law, who is celebrating his [birthday number] birthday today.

Father-in-law, you are a true embodiment of wisdom and strength. The love and support you’ve extended to me and our family are immeasurable and I am truly grateful. The warmth of your personality and the depth of your wisdom have been a guiding light in our journey together as a family.

There is a treasure trove of fond memories that we’ve gathered along the way. Be it a fishing trip where you showed incredible patience as you untangled my hopelessly knotted fishing line, or the times you indulged my penchant for spicy food, gamely trying the hottest sauce in the restaurant, only to end up downing a gallon of water. Your spontaneous laughter at these moments is still fresh in my memory, reminding me of your infectious spirit and your zest for life.

Your life journey is an inspiring tale of resilience, courage, and unyielding optimism. You’ve shown us that age is just a number, and life is but a series of adventures to be embraced wholeheartedly. Your humor and jovial nature often light up our gatherings, and your wisdom continues to guide us.

On this special day, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your love, support, and guidance. You are not just a father-in-law, but a mentor, a guide, and a dear friend. I wish you good health, endless happiness, and a year filled with joy and peace.

So here’s to you, a man of great honor and love, who has made an indelible mark in our lives. As we raise our glasses in a toast to celebrate your special day, we honor your contributions to our family and the joy you bring into our lives.

Happy Birthday, dear father-in-law. Here’s to a future filled with love, laughter, and shared memories. May your journey be filled with blessings and may your life continue to be an inspiration to us all.

Happy Birthday, and here’s to many more years of shared memories, hearty laughter, and an incredible journey together. We love you, now and always.”

As we gather to celebrate a milestone birthday, I am honored to stand before you. Today, a dear friend of mine, [friend’s name], is celebrating his/her [age] birthday.

[friends’s name], we’ve come a long way since our early days. I still remember the time when we were kids, going on adventurous treasure hunts in the backyard, thinking we were going to be world-famous treasure hunters, only to discover the ‘treasure’ was a few old coins we had forgotten about.

Our friendship has been a constant in a world of change, growing and evolving just as we have. From sharing our childhood dreams to supporting each other in our adult challenges, we’ve never failed to be there for each other. That’s just who you are — selfless, caring, and always ready to lend a hand.

Your strengths and achievements are countless. Your passion for [mention a skill or hobby] is not just impressive, but also inspiring. You’ve shown us what dedication and hard work can yield, and you should be incredibly proud of all that you’ve accomplished.

As we gather here to celebrate a pivotal milestone, it brings me immense joy to share a few words about my beloved [son/daughter], who is stepping into [his/her] [age] year today.

My dear [son/daughter], it seems like only yesterday when the nurse placed your tiny little form into my arms, and I held you for the first time. Your wide-eyed gaze met mine, and in that moment, I knew that my world had changed forever. From your first steps to your first words, every milestone has been a joy to behold, and I watch in awe as you grow and evolve each day.

Your journey so far has been filled with achievements, and I am proud of the person you’re becoming. Your passion for [mention a skill or hobby] is inspirational, and the dedication you’ve shown towards honing your skills is commendable. As we toast to your [age] birthday, let me share my hopes for you. I hope that you continue to chase your dreams fearlessly, as you’ve always done. I hope that life offers you opportunities to learn, grow and make a difference. And above all, I hope that your journey through life continues to be filled with love, happiness, and success.

So, let’s raise a glass to my [son/daughter], who has been, and will always be, the greatest gift in my life. May your path be smooth, your burdens light, and your joys plentiful. May your heart be filled with love, your spirit with courage, and your life with the unrestrained pursuit of your dreams.

Happy Birthday, dear [son/daughter]. Here’s to a future filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. I am immensely proud of you, and my love for you is boundless. Today marks an incredibly special occasion, the celebration of my [son’s/daughter’s], [child’s name], [age] birthday. As we gather here in this moment of joy and celebration, I am thrilled to share with you the journey of my precious child.

[child’s name], it’s a pure delight to see you grow, evolve, and step into your own. Your first day of school feels like just yesterday, when you clutched my hand tightly and flashed me that toothy grin before boldly stepping into your new classroom. Now, you are taking on the world with that same courage and determination, making us incredibly proud.

This past year has been a rollercoaster, but you’ve managed to ride the highs and lows with remarkable grace. I am in awe of how you’ve met challenges head-on, especially when you balanced your schoolwork with your passion for [mention their hobby or interest]. Your achievement in the [mention a recent achievement] is not only impressive but also a testament to your relentless pursuit of your dreams.

But it’s not just your achievements that make you special. You have a heart full of kindness and compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. The way you rallied your friends to help clean up the local park last summer – that was just one of the many moments when you’ve made us proud.

Your mother and I have a little surprise for you today [mention a surprise gift or event], but no gift could ever match the joy and fulfillment you bring into our lives. Happy Birthday, my dear [son/daughter]. Here’s to many more years of shared memories, hearty laughter, and the most incredible journey together. Your mom and I couldn’t be more proud, and we love you, now and always.

How to Enhance a Birthday Speech

  • Personalize Your Speech: Make sure to include personal anecdotes and experiences that capture the essence of the person you’re honoring. This not only makes the speech more relatable but also helps create a deeper connection with the audience.
  • Include Humor: Light-hearted moments or funny stories help to keep the audience engaged and make the speech more enjoyable.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Highlighting the person’s accomplishments, no matter how small, can make them feel appreciated and valued.
  • Express Genuine Emotion: Express your love, admiration, and pride for the person. Genuine sentiments could make the speech more impactful and memorable.
  • End on a High Note: Conclude the speech with a toast or a heartfelt wish for their future. This adds a celebratory tone to the conclusion and rounds off the speech nicely.

Remember, the key to a great birthday speech is to speak from the heart, keep it genuine, and make it about the person being celebrated.

In conclusion, delivering a compelling birthday speech can indeed be an arduous task, but with the right balance of personal anecdotes, humor, celebration of achievements, and genuine emotion, you can create a memorable moment that the birthday person and attendees will cherish. Always remember, the essence of your speech should resonate with the love and admiration you hold for the person, making it a unique tribute to their journey so far.

A: Absolutely! Rehearsing ensures a smooth delivery and helps you become familiar with the flow of your speech.

Q: How can I make my speech more personal?

A: It’s perfectly fine to get emotional. It shows your genuine feelings and can make the speech more impactful.

Q: Should I write down my speech or can I just wing it?

A: Writing down your speech helps structure your thoughts and ensures you don’t forget important points. However, try to avoid reading it verbatim to maintain a natural delivery.

Q: What if I forget what to say in the middle of the speech?

A: Don’t panic. Take a moment to collect your thoughts, and if you still can’t remember, move on to the next part of your speech.

Q: How should I end the speech?

A: Conclude with a toast or a heartfelt wish for the person’s future. It rounds off the speech on a celebratory note.

Q: How can I manage my stage fright?

Teachers celebrate many special days in their classrooms throughout the school year, but birthdays are a special celebration and teachers should make it special for each student. Here are a few ideas for celebrating student birthdays in the classroom.

Birthday Placemats, Balloons, and Covers

Make your students' day even more special by placing a birthday placemat on their desk. When students enter the classroom everyone will know who's birthday it is by looking at the desks. For an added touch you can attach a brightly colored balloon to the back of the students' seat, and cover their chair with a birthday chair cover.

All About Me Poster

When you know it's one of your students birthdays coming up have that child create a special all about me poster. Then, on the day of their birthday, have them share their poster with the class.

Birthday Questions

Each time it is someone's birthday in the class each student gets to ask the birthday student a question from the flower pot. For directions on how to make the flower pot and a downloadable question bank visit Fun For First .

Birthday Graph

Celebrate birthdays in your classroom by having students create a birthday graph! During the first week of school as a class create a birthday graph that will pose as the birthday bulletin board. Above each month, put the students' birthday.

Birthday Bags

Every child loves getting presents on the birthday! So here is an idea that will not break the bank. At the beginning of the school year go to the nearest Dollar Store and purchase the following items: Cellophane bags, pencils, erasers, candy, and a few trinkets. Then make a birthday bag for each student. This way when their birthday comes around, you will already be prepared. You can even print out cute labels that say Happy Birthday with their name in it.

The Birthday Box

To create a birthday box all you have to do is cover a shoe box with birthday wrapping paper and place a bow on the top of it. In this box place a birthday certificate, pencil, eraser, and/or any small trinket. When students enter the classroom have each person make the birthday girl or boy a birthday card (this goes in the box too). Then at the end of the day when it's time to celebrate give the student their birthday box.

Birthday Wish Book

Celebrate each student's birthday by having the class create a birthday wish book. In this book have each student fill out the following information:

  • Happy Birthday, _____
  • My birthday wish for you on your birthday is _______
  • If I could give you a gift I would give you _______
  • The thing I like the best about you is ______
  • Have a great day! From _______

Once students have filled out their page for the book have them draw a picture. Then assemble all of the pages into a book for the birthday student to take home.

Mystery Gift

A fun gift to give to students on their birthday is a mystery bag. Purchase one or more items (the dollar store has great cheap gifts for kids) and wrap the items up in different colored tissue paper. Choose dark colors so the student cannot see what is inside. Then place the gifts into a basket and allow the student to choose whichever gift they want.

How to write good birthday speeches

Birthdays are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy of living, family, and friends while focusing on that one special person whose  happy "day" it is.

After singing "Happy Birthday", blowing the candles out, making a wish and eating the cake, it's time for the speeches to begin.

And that's what you're here for - to grab a few tips to write a birthday speech!

Image: silhouette of woman presenting a birthday cake with lit candles to 2 children. Text: How write a good birthday speech

Use these suggestions to tailor your talk

1. gather your background information.

Before you write the speech get the background information you need. This will determine what you'll put in, and the tone of the language you'll use. It will also help you make sure that your speech is a success!

Get your friends and family to help you

You'll want the answers to these questions.

  • Is the planned birthday celebration formal or informal?
  • Who is invited? Is it strictly family? Family and friends? Work colleagues?
  • Are you the only speaker? If so, what theme would the family/friends/work colleagues like you to focus on?
  • What tone would they like you to use? Generally, the tone is light, humorous, sincere and positive. Yes, you may tease the birthday person a little, but within the boundaries set by the occasion. Too much roasting, use of language too spicy or smutty, or delving into sensitive subject areas could change the event from a happy to an unhappy birthday. Be really careful!
  • If you're not the only speaker: who are the others and what are they likely to cover? Also find out where on the speaking order you come.
  • How long are you expected to speak for?

2. Inspiration from quotations

Graphic: cartoon retro woman smiling. Text: It is scientifically proven that people who have more birthdays live longer.

If the birthday is a special one marking a significant milestone celebrate it by picking an appropriate quotation or two to use in your speech.

Click the link to find a large selection of  birthday quotations .

I've arranged them under the headings " Wisdom ", " Wit " and " Milestones " so can find what you need quickly.

3. Read these sample birthday speeches

Collage - 3 birthday speech images: 40th, 50th, & 18th

Reading example speeches will help you get an overview of the end result - the goal of going through this process!

I've got three birthday speeches you can look at.

One is a  50th birthday speech  for a man. It is written as if from a close male friend.  The second is a  40 birthday speech  for a daughter and the speech is written as if it comes from her mother.

And the third is an  18th birthday speech of thanks . The speaker is thanking his/her family and friends for coming along to his/her 18th birthday celebration.

You are welcome to use them as a template for the speech you need to write.

4. Other content suggestions

What personal milestones (other than age) have been reached? Has a special goal been attained?

What endearing characteristics or traits does the person have?

What does the future hold? What special (personal or career) goals are they aiming for?

Winnie Dowie, Aged 11 - 1935 - Titania, Midsummer's Night Dream, Shakespeare.

If the birthday is for an older or elderly person, as the song says: " accentuate the positive" . Life is for living regardless of age or circumstance. For instance, when we celebrated my mother-in-law Winnie's eighty-fifth birthday the speeches remembered the past: her life-long vibrant energy and passion for teaching speech and drama but they also spoke of her ongoing work.

The grandchildren of her first pupils were coming to her for lessons!

One of her goals was to  keep  right on teaching. And she did until her eyesight failed. Those young people gave her so much joy.

What hobbies does the birthday girl/boy have?

Is there a specific song or saying that could be their signature theme?

What core values does the person have and how are they shown in their life?

What did the person say they wanted to be when they were young and how has it turned out?

What special relationships does the person have? How have they added to their life?

5. Perhaps you'd like to place the birthday in an historical context?

Try these suggestions. Use a search engine for the first two, and family members in the know for the others.

  • What other significant events happened on this day in history ?
  • What popular songs were being sung at that time?
  • Where was the family living?
  • Were there any extraordinary circumstances around the birth itself?

Once your notes are done you are ready to  write

Write like a sandwich.

Use the standard  3 part "sandwich" speech writing format:

  • an introduction (one slice of bread)
  • the middle (the filling where you expand on your theme)
  • and a conclusion , (another slice of bread).

Your opening and ending hold the middle in place.

If you'd like more information about speech structure and the writing process, read my " how to write a speech " page.

You'll find detailed instructions as well as a quick "see-at-a-glance" overview of the process for those of you just needing a refresher.

And the last  tips are:

  • Remember to include a thank-you for the opportunity to prepare and give a speech. It could be either at the beginning or end, or in both places!
  • After your closing summary invite everyone to raise a toast to the birthday person.
  • If you're new to making speeches and a little nervous, write your speech notes up on cue cards  to avoid the possibility of embarrassment through stumbling or temporary memory loss.

Graphic - How to make cue cards for speeches.

  • (If you need help to prepare cue cards or don't know what they are go to my   how to make and use cue cards  page. You'll find full explanations there. A good set of cue cards will help you deliver your speech with confidence.)
  • Run through your speech several times out loud before delivery. (And better still, rehearse thoroughly. See my notes below.)

Make time to rehearse

speech on school birthday

Do read my page on  how to rehearse .    Rehearsing makes a huge difference. Try it and see for yourself. You'll find out if your speech is too long, too short, not funny enough, phrased awkwardly ...  Rehearsing exposes any glitches and allows you to fix them, privately.

Think of the speech as a gift

It may be difficult to prepare. However giving the birthday toast can be the ultimate enduring gift.

Words live on in the minds of those who hear them long after the bouquets of flowers drop their petals and the last of the chocolates has been eaten.

A birthday speech given from the heart with love, wit and wisdom can last a lifetime. That makes it well worth your effort!

PS. If it's your birthday and you're delivering a speech to welcome and thank everyone for coming to celebrate it with you, apply these suggestions to yourself. And, yes, you can toast yourself!

Birthday speech template including 8 samples for the celebrant and 18 for a guest at the anniversary party.

The tone is personal, congratulatory, lighthearted and sincere. So, come up with nice entertaining birthday thoughts, funny remarks and tell humorous stories or even jokes.

birthday speech

A guest can roast the celebrated person a little bit with giving special birthday gifts. But don’t go to far. How far you can go depends on the ambiance of the occasion.

So, it is good to know who is on the guest list:

  • Do they know each other?
  • How close to the celebrant are they?

Okay, I’ve made my point: don’t include insulting or smutty public speaking speech content. After all, it’s a happy day for she / he is a jolly good fellow  Just a small note before we start: were I wrote She or Her in my free birthday writing templates, you can read He or Him also.

Can We Write Your Speech?

Get your audience blown away with help from a professional speechwriter. Free proofreading and copy-editing included.

Pick out the ones you like. These are sample speech topics. If you are the celebrant then speak after all other speakers. Keep your speech short.

  • Welcome and thank all the guests for attending this beautiful party celebration.
  • Thank all for their party gifts and best wishes.
  • Thank the family members who have organized the party. Especially if it is a surprise party.
  • Look back at the past. Mention one or two important milestones in your life. E.g. your partner, the birth of your children or their graduation, memorable moments with friends, trips around the world, special projects, hobbies, etc. Warm and funny birthday speech topics about family ties always do the trick.
  • Thank all with one entertaining sentence, in which you capture the importance of your family and friends.
  • Tell the attendants about your plans and hopes.
  • What do you want to realize?
  • What do you want to change? And why?

And those popular and famous speech topics bring me to the next birthday gifts idea.

  • If it is a very special event – you reached a special age, for example – your 30th, 40th of 50th birthday – then pay attention to it. Tell a joke about people who reached this age related to the little surprise you want to hand over.

Otherwise, mention certain circumstances if they occur and influence the events. But do not sound sad, try to approach them in a positive way.

  • End your speech with praising the guests. Just say you hope that they will be back. At the party next year…

These topic ideas are suitable for every public speaking job.

THE PARTY ITSELF

  • Mention a nice, funny or emotional moment at the annivesary till now.
  • If you are one of the people who organized the party: look ahead. What’s coming up next? Lunch, dinner, you are moving to another location, room or place later this day or evening, other speakers, maybe mystery guest at the annivesary?
  • Mention the special circumstances, if appropriate. For instance think about the weather, the location, the number of people who are attending the birthday party, and so on. Look around and use your imagination.
  • What age? Is it a jubilee year? Is it a 18th, 21st, 40th, 50th, 60th or a 70th birthday speech, or even a 80th, 90th or 100th? Did she said something herself about reaching this age? Mention this unique number and its merits and uniqueness.
  • What happened today in history?
  • Are there memorable events on the date of birth?
  • Was she born at a special place?
  • Is she happily married? Describe this relationship.
  • Children, grandchildren?
  • Other notewirthy developments within the scope of the family ties? Mention those themes and don’t forget to congratulate her family.

ROAST A LITTLE BIT

Tease and roast the celebrant, but avoid any personal stuff that might upset or annoy the celebrant or a guest:

  • Roast the girl or boy a little bit. Can you characterize her personality?
  • What have other people said about her?
  • Mention her talents, hobbies or passions.
  • Are there noteworthy developments or achievements in her work and career? What has she always wanted to be?
  • What are her pet peeves?
  • What are her values of life? How does she propagate them?
  • Look ahead to her future. What were and/or are her goals or hopes in life? Do you think she will succeed? Be optimistic and supportive. Or – if you want to spoof somewhat – tell your disagreeing point of view with a wink …
  • Recapitulate the wishes and congratulations. Try to summarize all the best you wish in one well-meaned special speech topic statement.
  • And then of course, at last but not least, the closer: the toast. Propose a toast to the health of the girl, so to speak.
  • Give her a present or hand over the gift on behalf of all people who join. Don’t forget to tell you speak on behalf of everybody!

Have a nice party and may this information helps to enjoy preparing your birthday speech. Happy anniversary to you and to your relative or friend!

Whether it’s your best friend or a friend from middle school that you haven’t seen for years, you’ll find what you need here.

  • You’ve been my best friend since 6th grade. I’ll never forget you walking into my math class and sitting right next to me like you knew we were meant to be best friends. Ever since that day, I have had the privilege of watching you grow as a person. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life, but I’ve always had a safe place to go where I wouldn’t be judged. So, thank you for always being on my side for the last 10 years. Thank you for being my best friend. Happy Birthday.
  • Thank you for thinking of me on your special day. We haven’t seen each other for years, but it’s amazing how we talked today like no time went by. I hope you are having a great time. I know I am. You’ve grown so much as a person since we last saw each other. I’m so excited to get to know you again and pick up where we left off back in the day.

speech on school birthday

  • (NAME), your ability to keep me out of trouble has been one of the greatest attributes I admire a lot about you. I still remember back in the days when we were kids and how you used to keep the adults very busy with your amazing antics, just to make sure I never got spanked for my mischievous doings.
  • On special days like today, I think we should make merry and let the whole world know that we are celebrating the most important day of the year. I pray for many days like today for you, but I hope you know that more birthdays come with more wrinkles on your face. Anyway, I know you love birthdays and wouldn’t mind having many wrinkles on your face just to celebrate another birthday. May this anniversary bring joy and happiness to you, (NAME).
  • Being a truly special day today, ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to use this opportunity to invite you all to become wildlife supporters so that we can all have a fabulously wild party!

speech on school birthday

  • It affords me much pleasure to have the privilege to deliver this speech in honor of the birthday celebration of a dear friend of mine. (NAME), I will like to take advantage of this outstanding day in your life to let you know how much your presence in my life means to me. I might not say it to you very often, but you mean the world to me. (NAME), you and I have been the best of friends since we were little. I know you inside out and you know me inside out. But you are really more than just a mere friend to me; you are my brother/sister and inspiration.
  • All my life I’ve never seen anyone that is as loving and caring as you. And in addition to that you have an excellent sense of humor, which makes you the more wonderful. I wouldn’t trade your company for all the gold in the world. How blessed I am to have a magnificent person like you whom I call my friend and brother/sister.
  • On this special day of your life, I wish you all the good fortune in the world. May this anniversary celebration mark the beginning of breathtaking accomplishments in your life. You deserve it. You have really come a long way and achieved a great deal in many spheres of your life despite the challenging circumstances and obstacles that stood in your way.  I’m so proud and honored to be counted among your closest friends. Have a gloriously happy birthday celebration and a long life accompanied by good health, happiness and peace.

This category could fit anyone in your life. So, if you want to stand out and make them laugh, this is for you.

  • Happy birthday to one of maybe 3 people that I don’t need Facebook to help me remember that you’re aging. We’re all here to celebrate you, and you should really appreciate that. I mean, I gave up my evening of doing absolutely nothing to be here with you. But seriously, you’re the family member I’m least ashamed of being related to. So, thank you for that and enjoy your day.
  • Well, I was going to joke about you getting older, but then I remembered that every year you get older, I also get older. So, I had some wine and thought about it. Age really does get better with wine. Anyway, here’s to one year closer to being that crazy cat lady, talking to ourselves and being the only ones laughing at our own jokes. Oh wait, we’re already there.
  • Dearest (NAME), I congratulate you and wish you a happy birthday for growing a year older. It is always nice to be in your company because you are such a fun loving person.  It amazes me how you are able to perfect the art of putting smiles on faces of people around you. Indeed, you should be contesting for the award of the “The World’s Funniest”. On Sundays. In April. In leap years.

speech on school birthday

Whether you’re best friends with her, or just love your mom dearly, this list is for her:

  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidant for so many years. Not everyone is blessed to have a caring, loving mom like I am. And I want you to know that I am truly thankful. I have always been able to come to you with anything, and that has helped me become the confident person that I am today. So, thank you, and I wish you all the best on your special day and every day after.
  • Mom, I haven’t known you for my entire life, but I struggle to remember a time that you weren’t there. Thank you for accepting me as yours. Blood isn’t everything and you have shown that by taking me in and treating me like your own child. I know I’ll never be able to repay you for that, but just know that today and every day, I appreciate it.

This category is for your dad, whether it’s a father figure or your actual father.

  • Hey Dad, today is your special day and I want to make sure you know how much I appreciate you. Every time I needed advice about life, or my car was making a funny noise, I always knew I could come to you. Thank you for teaching me how to take care of myself. Although I still might have to call you when something breaks, you have taught me how to be a good person above all.
  • I know you weren’t there when I was born, and you didn’t see me take my first steps. But you will always be my dad. You have come into my life and taught me how to be a self-sufficient person. You taught me what love really is, and I want you to know that I wouldn’t trade you for the world. Thank you for choosing me and never giving up on me. Happy Birthday dad.

50th birthday speech

  • The easy joke is calling you over the hill or halfway there, but the truth is that you’ve been on this earth for half of a century. That sounds like a long time, but it’s really not. Life is so short. Time truly flies. But I’m so lucky to have known you for some/all of those 50 years.
  • You’ve been alive for 50 years, and you are still the kindest person that I know. You have grown with such grace and empathy. Some people get cold as they get older, but after being here for 50 years, you are still just as kind as the day we met. I wish you continued happiness on your journey.

Happy 50th Birthday Wishes!

  • Although you’re 60 today, it continues to amaze me how much you still want to learn and grow. This age is the perfect time to try something new. So, let’s try yoga or go horseback riding. Either way, if I’m there with you, I know it’ll be a blast. It has been an absolute pleasure knowing you, and I wish you an even better year than the last.
  • Today, you’re 21,915 days old. Sure, that sounds like a lot, but you have truly used all of those days to do your best. For 60 years, you haven’t stopped giving, caring and loving those around you. You always make sure the people around you know that you care about them and what they have to say. So, today is for you. We’re celebrating, giving, caring and loving you today because you deserve it.

Happy 60th Birthday Wishes!

  • To my darling husband, (NAME), on your birthday, I say, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for always being by my side to love, support, encourage and protect me”. You not only make my heart happy but also my entire body as a whole. God really blessed me abundantly the day He brought us together.
  • You are such a phenomenal friend and husband to me. Honey, not even all the words in the dictionary will be sufficient to express to you the amount of love that this heart of mine has for you. Such is the depth of my love for you. Thank you for every beautiful thing you have done for me.
  • Prior to meeting you, I always wondered who would ever feel the great vacuum in my life, but then you came into my life and not only filled that emptiness in my but whisked me to paradise. Having an amazing friend and husband like you is worth more than all the diamonds and money in the world. I truly love you from the bottom of the deepest cores of my heart and soul.

speech on school birthday

  • To all the beautiful people here, who took time off their busy schedules to attend the birthday celebration of my beloved wife, I say, “Thanks for being so wonderful to us”. I can forget everything in my life, but never will I forget the birthday of my beloved (NAME), who is not only my sweet wife but also my best friend and mentor.
  • On your anniversary, honey, I have a confession to make. When you go to bed, what you don’t know is the fact that very often I wake up in the middle of the night and stare at you as you sleep peacefully finding it hard to believe that a wonderful woman like you chose me to be her husband. How I became so lucky to have you in my life is something I will never understand. You are indeed the greatest treasure of my life – there’s absolutely no two ways about it!
  • (NAME), thank you for being an incredibly caring, loving and supportive wife to me. Thank for touching my life in a way that no other has and will ever do. From the deepest part of my heart, I wish you a long, happy life. May every desire of your heart that hasn’t yet materialized begin materializing in grand style from today onwards. I love you so much, honey. Thank you for being my superwoman and the love of my life. Happy birthday!

speech on school birthday

  • We’ve come a long way from the Cinderella-themed parties when you were young. Now I am suddenly looking across the table at an adult. I’m not sure where the time went, but I am so proud of the sweet, intelligent, beautiful girl you’ve become. As you explore adulthood, I just hope you are happy, safe and stay true to yourself no matter what.
  • For 21 years, I have watched you grow, learn, struggle and overcome, but one thing I was always so proud of is your determination. That fire inside of you has been there for your entire life. Whether it was learning to walk or to drive, you always had that fire in your eyes, and I can’t wait to see where that determination takes you. I’m endlessly proud of you.

Happy 21st Birthday Wishes!

  • My sweet angel, as you turn a new age today, know that there’s nothing in this world that I wouldn’t do to put happiness in your heart and smiles on your beautiful face. You are my rainbow and everything I treasure in this world.
  • Sweetheart, I only have one advice for you today. Work hard and never stop having faith in yourself. If you do this, all you big dreams will always come to fruition and you will certainly be all the things you want to be.
  • You are a beautiful young woman who brings glory to me all the time, and for that I shall forever be thankful to my lucky stars. Sunshine, may the good Lord be with you every moment of your life and guide your every step. Happy birthday, my dearly beloved daughter. I love you so much.
  • Son, you are one of the biggest reasons I wake up with a smile on my face every morning. You make me exceedingly proud to be a father/mother every second of my life. I couldn’t have asked God to bless me with a better son. For as long as I live, I shall support you physically and spiritually. I shall always be there for you through the good times, the not so good times, and the bad times.
  • Before I take my seat, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask everyone here to kindly join me to wish my dear son and friend a super duper happy birthday! I love you so much, son.

speech on school birthday

  • Happy birthday to the best brother in this world!  I know I can always count on your support during difficult and pleasant times. You are someone who always seeks to have a positive impact on everyone who comes into your life, which I believe is the reason why you have attracted so many good friends. Planet earth will be a very wonderful place to be if everyone had a brother like you who is so selfless and very tolerant as well.
  • (NAME), we have had many amazing moments together and I can remember our childhood days when we used to do a lot of wild and crazy stuff. Growing up was really fun with you around. I want you to know that I cherish every moment that I spend with you. Brother, you are the reason I am who I am today and this is because you always inspire and encourage me to seek greater heights in life.
  • Today, being a very important day in your life, I want to use this moment to express my sincerest gratitude to you for all your support, care and above all the extraordinary love that you have shown me. My prayer for you is to have a life that overflows with joy, happiness, and good health. Happy birthday, dear brother!
  • Happy birthday, lovely sister! I truly think that you deserve an award for the “Best Sister of the Year”, and to be honest this is not because you have been an amazing person to me, but your exceptional qualities as a person and a woman for that matter needs to be applauded.

speech on school birthday

  • Sweet sister, whenever the thought of you crosses my mind (which it often does), it brings memories of very exciting moments that we have shared together. You are caring, smart and full of fun, which always makes me feel that I am the luckiest sibling on this earth, knowing that I have someone very special like you in my life.
  • (NAME), I can’t thank you enough for all the awesome things that you have done for me. You have been my best friend, and I can’t imagine how my world would be without you. I want to congratulate you on adding another year to your life and I hope that this birthday brings you an abundance of happiness and joy. Happy birthday, dear sister!
  • Hi everyone! I always count myself to be one of the luckiest persons in this world to have such an extraordinary boss like you. Your relationship with your employees transcends the usual. To me, you are a best friend and a brother as well. I will be forever grateful to you for all the support you have given me and most importantly for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful Company.
  • Your leadership style is one of the best one can think of. You are always on the lookout for the best in terms of the welfare of your employees and the Company as a whole. Professionally, I consider you to be the best boss I have ever met. You have made the workplace one of the most enjoyable places to be.
  • I can’t thank you enough for having a good impact on the lives of all your employees. I want to use this special day to wish you all the best in life. I pray that the Almighty Lord will keep on blessing you with many more exciting days like your birthday today. Once again, I wish you a fantastic birthday, dear boss!
  • To me and this business, you have proven to be a valuable asset. Words cannot express how much pleasure it gives me to work with such a dedicated person like you. I am really amazed and impressed by the professional way you go about your work, especially in solving very tedious problems. Your exceptional decision-making skills have yielded awesome results for this business. You deserve a standing ovation for the professionalism you bring to this business.
  • Again, (NAME), words cannot sufficiently express how grateful I am to you for all the sleepless nights and backbreaking tasks that you had to go through just to make sure that the business is on the right path. Your loyalty to this partnership has always been true and you are indeed the ideal person to do business with.
  • This business has been successful, and I believe that it will only get better because of a special partner like you who has always been there through thick and thin. I want to use this moment to let you know that you are my inspiration and I am thankful for having you in both my professional and personal life. I wish you all the best as you commemorate this special day which marks your birthday.

16th Birthday Speech Sample

This 16th birthday speech sample really hits the mark.

The mother of the 16-year-old birthday girl called to tell me that not only did the audience react the right way in all the right places, but also her daughter loved the speech, from beginning to end.

You can't ask for more than that kind of response. Better yet, it's the type of speech that you can easily adapt for your daughter. Talk about a sweet sixteen!

[Facing Rhonda*]

Sweet 16. I can hardly believe it. Today is your 16th birthday celebration. I find that incredible. I find you incredible. Don't worry, I won't get all gushy about how great you are. I'll only talk about how beautiful you are.

Don’t cringe and roll your eyes just yet. I promise not to embarrass you with the kind of things that go on greeting cards and "Hang in there" kitty posters.

But turning 16 is something else. You're no longer a child. This I know well. I have watched you grow up — literally. Now, today, filled with hopes and dreams, you stand on the verge of becoming a woman. A beautiful woman. And it warms my heart to see you, my beautiful daughter, blossom before my eyes. You amaze me.

Rhonda , today will likely go down as one of the best days of your life.

I hope that, one day years from now, you will look back and remember this special birthday as a bright and happy moment in your life, with your family and friends there to share wholeheartedly in your joy.

[Motioning to the family and friends in the room]

Your entire family and friends are the most precious gifts you have in life, something you'll clearly see a little bit later, when you open your 16th birthday presents. Kidding aside, we are your biggest fans and only wish you the best life has to offer. Nothing less, because today is the start of a fun, exciting and rewarding journey for you.

[Turning back to Rhonda ]

It’s an honor for me to be a major part your life. You are an extraordinary 16-year-old girl. You have a wonderful quality of independence that I value and respect. The power to achieve is in every nerdy fiber of you, whether you're spending hours at the "Math Club" or obsessing over every aspect of any school project.

You are a unique individual with unique tastes, so it gives me great pleasure to know that you love everything Hollywood, because I also think you have great taste — lots of it, in fact — especially when it comes to fine cuisine or traveling around the world with a bunch of middle-aged women like me, your Mom, and all my friends.

And you are wonderfully tenacious when you want something, like whenever you try to persuade me to give you a credit card or get you a dog, which you finally did…after years and years of trying.

Seriously, though, your friends and your family — me, your sister, your brother and, if he was here today, your Dad — are so proud of you, because we see so much potential in you and we know that you can do anything you really want, because unlike so many other kids your age, you know what you want to do in life. You really want to sink your teeth into a whole world of possibilities, and that makes us happy because we know you will never leave anyone down in the mouth, just a trail of infectious smiles.

Rhonda , although you know 100% what path you will ultimately choose in life, we hold you in our hearts for not what you will do but for the way you will do it.

We know you will be yourself. You will be brave. You will be honest. You will be kind. You will never give up. You are — and will be — an inspiration to all of us.

[Facing the birthday party guests again]

I’m sure everyone here shares my sense of joy in watching her wonderful soul and kind spirit we all love watching her spread your wings, take flight and reach for the sky. We've all seen what her heart and beautiful soul can do.

You are a gift to all the lives you've touched. You fill my heart with happiness. I'm so grateful I've been blessed to know a wonderful person like you. If you were a jewel, you would be the most radiant and precious the world over.

Always be that shiny and loving person you are now! Remember that you always have me, your family and your friends to support you.

[Facing the birthday party guests again — and raising your glass towards your Rhonda, so others will follow you]

Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and join me in a toast to this remarkable, young woman.

[Facing Rhonda again]

We've gathered here to tell you, Just how much you mean to us, That's why we're toasting you today, And why we're making such a fuss. Today we wish you all the best, You deserve it more than most, Here's to a very beautiful soul, Our love and this happy birthday toast.

Rhonda , may your 16th birthday be as unforgettable as you've made all our lives with your kindness and joy (in other words, as unforgettable as you).

Now let's all drink up and enjoy the rest of the night!

40th Birthday Speech Sample

There's a very simple reason I like this 40th birthday speech sample: it's truly a gift of love from husband to wife, without a hint of condescension.

The husband's sincere appreciation of his wife's inner and outer beauty is, I think, a wonderful ode to the couple's love and his wife's 40th year on this earth.

You can simply change some of the facts to write a 40th birthday speech worthy of your loved one. Let the 40th birthday party begin!

Plus, the husband let me know (via email) that his wife thoroughly enjoyed his speech, which only made him (and me, as the speechwriter) all the happier.

[Looking at your audience]

Welcome, everybody. Before I say a few words about my beautiful wife, I would like to thank you for helping us celebrate her 40th birthday. We are so grateful that you took some time out of your busy week to join us here. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as amazing without you!

[Looking at Joyce and around the room]

Joyce*, it is hard to find the right words to express how much Joyce has added to my life all these years…but that won't stop me from going on and on about her.

It's incredible to think that we met at a bar for singles in 1995, got engaged in 1996, were married in 1997 and became first-time parents in 2004. How time flies…but not for my beautiful wife.

[Looking only at your wife]

Joyce, wishing you a "Happy 40th Birthday" just doesn't seem right. Happy 20th birthday for the second time is more like it. It's not only because you still have the face of an angel, the body of a goddess and the spunk of a teenager. It's also because you’re a beautiful, strong, sexy, funny, upbeat person with so much love in your heart and a zest for life that's simply contagious.

For me, your 40th birthday is a chance to say proudly that I am so fortunate and grateful to have you as my wife and best friend. I think it's fair to say that for me, our children Stuart* and Donna*, our families and our friends, you’ve always brought so much joy, positivity and fulfillment to all our lives.   Your smile, your patience, your optimism, your creativity and, most of all, your free spirit have always been an example of what it means to be the best kind of daughter, wife, friend and, most importantly, a wonderful mother, what with the hours upon hours of after-school ballet, gymnastics, baseball and soccer under your belt. You have definitely set the "how to be a super woman" bar very, very high.

I know I speak for everyone here when I say we have all learned so much from you over the past years. Along with the immense love, joy and adventure you've brought into our lives, you've taught us all, by example, the real value of love, family, friendship, kindness and honesty. You've shown us how to appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. You have always been, and always will be, an inspiration to all of us here, especially me.

[Raising your glass toward Joyce, so others will follow you] Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and do me the honor of joining me in a toast to Joyce.

[Turning back to Joyce]

Joyce, may your 40th birthday be as unforgettable as our first kiss, our wedding day or the birth of our children (in other words, as unforgettable as you). And may you celebrate many, many more birthdays — [mock whispering under her breath] under the radar, of course.

Darling, I love you even more today than when we first met. Again, happy 40th birthday, my love!

50th Birthday Speech Samples

Here are different types of 50th birthday speech samples you can use as inspiration when you craft your 50th birthday speech. Feel free to mix it up a little, combining elements from all three 50th birthday speeches below.

Short 50th Birthday Speech

Short 50th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

Here's to someone who has reached the pinnacle of true wisdom and the very prime of life! Cheers to every lesson you take from your past and all the adventures you have yet to take. Let's raise our glasses to your 50 years of beautiful memories and many more to come. Happy 50th birthday!

50th Birthday Speech from Daughter to Mother

When it comes to birthday speech samples, it's important to show "range" (how far you can go).

For example, below is one birthday speech for a young woman, a daughter who wanted to commemorate her mother's 50th birthday in a cool way.

That doesn't mean throwing a bunch of the latest buzz words into the speech. It means capturing how a young person speaks (not what he or she actually says). Take a look for yourself...

[Looking at your mother]

Mom, wishing you a "happy 50th birthday" doesn't seem right. Happy 25th birthday for the second time is more like it. It's not only because you still have the legs and face of an airline stewardess. It's also because you're a whirlwind of pure love, passion, enthusiasm, warmth and humor that's, well, simply contagious. I see you in the laughter and kindness of our precious family and your many friends. And I see you in me—the best part of me.

For me, today is a chance to say proudly that I feel so fortunate and honored to have you not only as my mother but also as my inspiration. Along with your tremendous love and support, you've brought, by example, immense joy and purpose into my life.

I'm so glad that you've always had my back, even when you told me to keep my back (and the rest of my body) at school, not at home. I know I have caused you—and still cause you—a little bit of stress. It's not on purpose. It's actually payback for all the times you've embarrassed me in front of my friends. Seriously, though, I will try my best to be a better me, Daughter 2.0, a version of me that's modeled on the best of you. You are so special to me, to our family and all your BFFs.

Many, many, many thanks for all you do. You truly live by the motto of giving everything and expecting nothing in return. I don't think I know a more thoughtful and generous person. For everyone who knows and loves you, you are our resourceful, loving matriarch and health nut, devoted to family and friends, over whom you fuss, spoil and most definitely feed—hungry or not—whenever we come to visit you.

[Holding the hand of your mother or still looking at her]

Happy 50th birthday, Mom! May you celebrate many, many more birthdays—under the radar, of course. I love you, Mom! After 22 years of living under your roof, I can honestly say two things: (1) You are an amazing mother and (2) I plan to live another 22 years under your roof. Live with it.

[Turning to your guests]

On behalf of my Mom and myself, I want to thank all of you for coming here to celebrate her 25th-for-the-second-time birthday. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as special without you. Now let's all raise our glasses to our birthday girl, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

50th Birthday Speech from Brother to Brother

The 50th birthday speech below is a more solemn speech for the brother of the 50th birthday boy, who is a very pious man. This template is ideal for anybody who must pay tribute to a religious birthday boy or girl.

Welcome, everybody. Before I say a few words about my wonderful brother, Peter*, I would like to thank you for helping us celebrate his 50th birthday. We really appreciate that you took the time to be here. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as amazing without you!

[Looking at Peter and around the room]

It is hard to find the right words to express how much Peter has added to my life, all our lives, in fact, for so many years…but that won't stop me from going on and on about him.

Today, Peter celebrates his 50th birthday. Instead of embarking on the proverbial mid-life crisis in which so many of us find ourselves, he is a force of a man. The sparkle in his eyes and the divine love in his heart have not been dulled by the 18,250 days he has lived on this earth. I hope that never changes because it’s just one of the many things I admire about him.

For me, Peter, your 50th birthday is a chance to say proudly that I am so grateful and honored to have you as my brother and as a friend. I think it's fair to say that for me, Mom, our sisters, your wife, your son, your grandson, the whole family and your friends, you’ve always brought so much joy to all our lives.

The Lord brought you into this world 50 years ago — on a Sunday — spiritually, a day of rest, a day of worship, a day of great joy, a day of solidarity, a gift from God. An important day, to say the least.

Peter's day of birth is worth mentioning since, for him, giving his heart to God has meant a new life, a new purpose, a new sense of self. It has meant washing his earthly worries away, day after day, and trusting in God to guide him. Peter has chosen to trust in God's plan and will. He now knows that no matter what happens, good or bad, God is watching over him and bringing him to where he's supposed to be…at home, around the corner or on the road.

A good man in so many ways, Peter has shown his love for God by observing God's commandments and applying God's principles. And this has not been in vain. By living in harmony with God's guidance, Peter has shown our heavenly Father that he truly appreciates all that he has done for him. And I can definitely say that we here have been the main beneficiaries of Peter's love and kindness.

[Looking at Peter]

Yes, Peter, today not only marks a major milestone for you, but also for us. I know I speak for everyone here when I say it's such a joy to celebrate you and your life, and wish you the best of health and happiness. And what a celebration it is. I'm sure you must be quite moved by the presence of so many loved ones, a clear sign that you are cherished by many.

Indeed, we are here to celebrate your smile, your patience, your optimism, your caring and, most of all, your steadfastness, which has always been an example of what it means to be the best kind of son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. You have definitely set the "how to be a God-loving man" bar very, very high.

Everybody here has learned so much from you over the years. Along with the immense love, joy and kindness you've brought into our lives, you've taught us all, by example, the real value of love, family, friendship, caring, honesty and the Lord's ever-present care and power in their lives. You've shown us how to appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. You have always been, and always will be, an inspiration to all of us here.

For you, today must be bittersweet. Sweet because you can look back on your 50 years of life with satisfaction and pride, knowing that everyone here, including me, consider you a treasure, a best friend and a man who loves God — and bitter because many of your loved ones are not here to share it with you. But I know you find comfort from knowing they are all in the Lord's loving arms.

For me, well, today is a chance to say thank you on behalf of our family and friends. Thank you for serving as a shining example of God's goodness and grace. Of course, these amazing qualities of yours are timeless and ageless — they radiate from your very essence. They come from your heart and cast a beautiful light around you and us. We have all been lucky to be near enough to step into that light.

[Facing the audience]

It would be difficult for me to list the many, many ways Peter has graced our lives, so I won't even try. We would be here for hours upon hours, if I did. Suffice to say, we feel so fortunate and honored to have you as family, a friend and, most importantly, our inspiration. Along with your contagious love of life, people and all living things, you've inspired us, by example, to look for every opportunity to bring God's love, immense joy and purpose to our lives.

More than anything else, we here feel blessed to have you in our lives. You are an amazing soul who never hesitates for even a second to be compassionate and kind. You are so special to everyone in this room. Again, happy 50th birthday, Peter!

Now, everyone, please raise your glasses in a toast to Peter.

[Turning back to Peter]

Peter, may you celebrate many more birthdays in great health and spirits as you embark upon your retirement years. May you also continue to find solace in God's word, love and His plan for you.

[Turning back to your guests]

Now, everyone, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

A toast to six decades of your loving, caring and inspiring ways. To the stories you shared, the memories you made, and the adventures that still lie ahead for you. You're not getting older, just becoming a genuine classic. Happy 60th birthday to the most inspiring person I know!

60th Birthday Speech from Sister to Sister-in-Law

Birthday speech samples like the one below show that even a sister-in-law can deliver a heartfelt birthday speech (with a little tongue-in-cheek to add some fun and whimsy to this tribute).

[Looking at your sister-in-law]

Susan*...dear, dear, Susan. From the moment I met you, I knew you were a keeper. You still are. You light up every room you enter with your loving, caring, happy, silly, funny, life-of-the-party ways. My brother, Gary*, is lucky to have you. I'm lucky to have you. In fact, our whole family is lucky to have you. I honestly don't know what we'd do without you.

When I tell people about my incredible sister-in-law, Susan, I always say, "I have the best sister-in-law in the world. She's my best friend." And this always gets the same response: disbelief. They look at me as if I'm trying to sell them dragon eggs or something and say, "Those are words that will never, ever come out of my mouth." I guess we live in a scary, post-Solange Knowles world. But I will say it right here and now: I have the best sister-in-law in the world.

It gives me and everyone in this room, I'm sure, immense pleasure to be here tonight and celebrate you on your 60th birthday. Happy 60th birthday, Susan. I love you.

[Turning to the guests]

Now let's all raise our glasses to the sweetest and youngest 60 year old we know!

[Turning back to your sister-in-law]

Susan, may you celebrate many more birthdays in great health and even greater spirits.

[Turning back to the guests]

Everyone, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

Here's a variety of 80th birthday speech samples that you can draw from when you put together your own 80th birthday speech. To express exactly how you feel about the birthday boy or girl, simply incorporate parts from each of the 80th birthday speech examples below that feel right to you.

Short 80th Birthday Speech

Short 80th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

To a true gem who has redefined and elevated what 80 years of life should look like! Your spirit shines brighter with each passing year. Let's toast to your wonderful journey, your invaluable wisdom, and the memories you have yet to create. Here's to your incredible 80 years and many more!

80th Birthday Speech from Friend to Friend

This birthday speech sample is different from the others on this page in one very important respect: it's delivered by a platonic friend, not a family member or sweetheart.

This type of speech requires a certain tact. A friend should not try to appropriate what's a big celebration for, in this case, the 80th birthday boy and his family, stealing the scene (so to speak) and ending up as the lead in this major "birthday" production.

A friend's speech should just serve as a complement to the evening. That's exactly what the speech sample below does.

Welcome, everybody. Thank you for being here and sharing David's 80th birthday celebration. I must say that I feel 50 years younger as I gaze around the room! OK, maybe 10 years younger.

[Facing David*]

So here we are together to celebrate you and your 80 well-lived, well-loved years—golden years full of energy, achievement, commitment, joie de vivre, adventure, fulfillment in marriage and family life and happiness. And you've seen sadness and tough times too, finding the inner strength to rise above them.

David, we hold you in our hearts for not what you've done for us but for the way you have done it. Being yourself. Being gutsy. Being honest. Being kind. Working hard. Never giving up. Your wisdom, your experience, your insight, your authenticity—are inspiring.

Today, we offer you our gratitude and our loving best wishes. Personally, I feel very privileged to have a friend like you in my life for so long. You've been an amazing role model, supporter, adviser, confidant and, when there's a game of Rummy Cube afoot, a worthy opponent. I can only hope that the rest of my journey on Earth is as full of love, joy, happiness and travel as yours.

David, all your family and friends here tonight pay tribute to the wonderful, generous and loving person you are.

[Facing the birthday party guests]

Before we toast this incredible man, I would like to leave you with a poem by Helen Steiner Rice that I adapted to capture what makes David so special as a friend.

[Turning back to David]

David, your friendship is a golden chain,

The links are shared moments so dear,

And like a rare and precious jewel,

I treasure you more each year.

Your friendship is clasped together firmly,

With a love that's deep and true,

And it's rich with happy memories,

and fond recollections, too.

Time can't destroy its beauty,

For, as long as memory lives,

Years can't erase the pleasure,

That the joy of your friendship gives.

For your friendship is a priceless gift

That can't be bought or sold,

But to have a friend like you,

Is worth far more than gold.

And the golden chain of friendship,

Is a strong and blessed tie,

Binding kindred hearts together,

As the years go passing by.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and join me in a toast to this remarkable man [raising your glass towards your David, so others will follow you].

[Facing David]

David, may your 80th birthday be as unforgettable as your first kiss, your wedding day or the birth of your children and grandchildren (in other words, as unforgettable as you).

100th Birthday Speech Samples

Here are examples of 100th birthday speeches that can serve as your muse when you create your own 100th birthday speech. Don't hesitate to incorporate aspects from each of the 100th birthday speech samples below to make it unique.

Short 100th Birthday Speech

Short 100th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

To a century of your utmost grace, strength and kindness. You've witnessed a lifetime of history, yet your spirit remains timeless. As we raise our glasses, we celebrate your remarkable journey, honor your wisdom, and anticipate more chapters in your extraordinary story. Happy 100th birthday!

100th Birthday Speech from Son to Mother

This is one of those classic 100th birthday speech samples. It has all the ingredients of a heartfelt 100th birthday tribute: a trip down memory lane, recognition of a life well lived, a big show of respect and inspiring words for the future (whatever it holds).

[Facing the audience]

I would like to thank everyone for coming here today to celebrate our mother's special birthday.

To say I'm delighted to toast my mother on her 100th birthday is an understatement. I feel very fortunate to have this honor — but I'm not very surprised. Long ago, I realized that my mother had discovered the secret to living longer. She hasn't shared all of it with me yet but has hinted that it has something to do with her Atlantic City junkets, weekly doses of the local Senior Center and Eggplant Parmesan.

Mom, living to 100 is a blessing but I don't have to tell you. You bring new meaning to the "word" blessing.

For everyone who knows and loves you, you are our resourceful, loving matriarch and master chef, devoted to family and friends, over whom you fuss, spoil and most definitely feed — hungry or not — whenever we come to visit you.

For your four children who grew up in your warm and loving home, you are more than a mother — you're an inspiration. You're as sharp and feisty as ever with a true passion for cooking, sewing, gardening and everything life has to offer — plus you're an independent woman who has lived happily ever after in the same house for 65 years. If we're only half as sharp, feisty and passionate as you at 100, we will still be sharper, feistier and more passionate than anyone I know.

For your 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren who can see beyond your white hair, you are not only a repository of memories, from every family and holiday occasion or party — you are someone as alive and vibrant as they are.

Yes, living to 100 is a blessing and we are thrilled, to say the least, to celebrate the blessing we have in you. What a privilege to have you here today, what a treat to love you and what a joy to be loved by you.

Happy 100th birthday, Mom. Here's to you and the truly special legacy you leave us every day.

Birthday Speech Commemorates Life With Style

Birthday speech

A birthday speech is a short tribute speech given by a close friend, family member, or colleague to celebrate someone’s birthday. The speech typically includes a brief introduction of the birthday person, followed by fond memories or stories about them. It usually ends with a toast to the birthday person and their happiness.

Marking someone’s special day with a birthday speech or toast is a lovely way to commemorate the event. It does not have to be a milestone birthday to honor the person celebrating the anniversary of their birth with a  tribute speech .

Table of Contents

What Is The Purpose Of A Birthday Speech?

Why give a birthday speech?

  • Welcome:  The person hosting the party might say a few words, which equates to giving a welcome speech to all the wonderful people who have gathered to celebrate the guest of honor.
  •   Add to the celebration . When people are together for a birthday celebration, someone publically conveys their good wishes and urges others to join in wishing the same.
  •   Express Love:  The most obvious reason to give a speech on your best friend or family member’s big day is to express your love and adoration.
  •   Roasting:  People may want to playfully roast the birthday boy or girl on milestone birthdays by telling embarrassing stories. Just remember not to get inappropriate.

Birthday speech honors the birthday person, often with a dash of humor

Who Usually Gives A Birthday Speech

Virtually anyone can give a birthday speech: parent, spouse, sibling, child, friend, etc. However, someone in particular might be asked to give the speech, or the host might take the honor upon themself. Such a speech is often planned, or it may be  impromptu .

Sometimes, a guest or two might feel moved to give a  spontaneous birthday speech  at the party. If you have a great friend and you are with them celebrating their birthday, let your heart lead you to the right words to say about the guest of honor.

The birthday person might even give a speech themselves.

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech?

When you are celebrating someone’s birthday, what should you say? Of course, “happy birthday” tops the list. Whether you are speaking about a friend, family member, or other loved one, make it clear that everyone is here today for that particular person.

There is no rule that whoever gives the speech must know the person well. However, they should have a sense of what is appropriate for the audience. Refrain from telling stories that cast the guest of honor in a negative light, as a birthday party is not the time or place for that.

Especially for older people, it is appropriate to wish them good health for the upcoming year (particularly as they enter a new decade!). Sometimes people include birthday quotes or sayings about gratitude or reflection on life.

BIrthday speech or toast is a gret way to honor a birhtday

As birthday speeches should be upbeat, deaths or challenges of the past years should not be the focus. If the birthday celebrant’s mother died recently, it might be appropriate to say, “This is the first birthday since Mom died. if she were here, she’d be the first one at the microphone to wish you a happy birthday.” Again, knowing how the birthday celebrant feels about these subjects should guide the speechmaker.

Looking for a template to follow? Here is a brief outline:

  • Introduce yourself.  If you plan to speak, you want everyone to know who you are and your relationship to the birthday boy or girl (or man and woman.)
  •  Tell a couple of  brief stories  about the guest of honor.
  •  Bring your thoughts together with a culminating  quote  or idea if you want to.
  •  Make a  toast wishing the individual well .

Do You Focus On Age In A Birthday Speech?

Some birthdays are considered milestone birthdays,  though other birthdays are no less memorable and worry of celebration. Unless it is a big birthday and everyone assembled knows it, you should keep the guest of honor’s age private.

Here are some milestone birthdays that are often marked by special celebrations::

Golden Birthday

The  golden birthday  is when you turn the same number of years as the day you were born. If you were born on the 26th of the month, your golden birthday would be when you turn 26. Some celebrate multiples of the number, as on the 52nd birthday, or reverse the number and celebrate on the 62nd birthday,

Many see a golden birthday as a significant event celebrated with gold crowns and other decorations.

Golden birthday. BIrthday speech will point out the significance.

15th Birthday

Although most people recognize the 16th as the most important teenage birthday, in some cultures, the 15th is even more of a milestone. That is a traditional coming-of-age celebration for Latinas called the  Quinceanera . It is an exquisite party filled with family, friends, food, music, and dancing.

On this particular occasion, it is tradition for either the father or minister to give a speech. If the father gives the speech, it will likely have many stories about his little girl growing up so quickly. The guest of honor is also expected to speak and thank everyone for participating in the event.

 Quinceanera on 15th birthday

16th Birthday

Remember back to turning 16? Such an important age between learning to drive and accepting more adult responsibilities; this is a big one. Often called the “sweet sixteen” for a teenage girl, a great birthday speech to celebrate this might be given to the guest of honor’s mother, godmother, or a close friend.

18th Birthday

Sharing best wishes for someone turning 18 is easy enough as they have entered the world of adulthood. A birthday message might talk about how it is time to stop leeching off the parents and pave your path in life. (Make sure such comments are clearly made in jest. A birthday speech is not meant to be a life lesson, tough love, or an eviction notice!)

21st Birthday

This birthday is significant in some countries, such as the United States, as it marks the legal drinking age. When young people get together for this celebration, it often includes raucous laughter and wild partying. When a bunch of other 20-somethings gets together for this celebration, the toasts or speeches might be more risqué than other birthdays.

30th Birthday

Some people struggle with turning 30 since the 20s are considered the age of adult youth. However, you might hear the words “old” come up at a 30th celebration. If you’re past 50, you know 30 is so young!

40th Birthday

Also called the ruby birthday, the 40th is a popular birthday to celebrate. Turning 40  marks the midpoint of life, which may be why cards and decor stress either “Life begins at 40″: ” or “over the hill.” If the birthday person is sensitive about their age, stress the first sentiment, not the second!

Know if your birhtday humor will be appreciated or offensive

50th Birthday

The 50th birthday speech is one of the most common since it is such a big one. If you are honored with wishing someone a happy 50th birthday in the form of a speech, you can tell some funny stories and insert some warmth and sentimental tidbits into what you have to say.

60th Birthday

60 is another significant number that usually comes with a birthday bash. Turning 60 can also leave someone feeling old, so even if you feel tempted to throw an old fart party, remember to be sensitive to the fact that these big birthdays can be challenging for some people.

100th Birthday

Those people who live to be 100 should expect a birthday celebration.  This incredible event must be marked by many short birthday speeches or well wishes. Since someone turning 100 is likely to have outlived many of their friends and family members and also might be short on stamina. Having multiple loved ones speak for a very short period might be more appropriate. You could make a video beforehand so the guest of honor can see them repeatedly.

100th birthday deserves a birthday speech

What Are Some Tips For Giving A Birthday Speech?

  • Energy:  A birthday speech should display positive energy and convey well wishes.
  • Forget the Number:  Unless it is a milestone birthday and everyone knows that number, announcing how old the guest of honor is is not tactful.
  •   Keep it Brief:  Birthday speeches should be a manageable length.
  •   No Embarrassing Stories:  Don’t say anything rude or overly embarrassing about the guest of honor.
  •   Upbeat:  Leave the sad stories for another time. When it comes to birthdays, the best speeches are happy and cheerful.

How to Write a Wonderful Birthday Speech

If you've been asked to write a birthday speech for a friend, colleague or family member, you're probably suffering from mixed emotions! On the one hand, it's an honor to be asked. On the other, you might feel entirely panic-stricken! What on earth will you say? How will you do the birthday boy/girl justice?

The tips on this page are designed to help - and at the end of the page, there are a couple of links to sample speeches which you can adapt and use yourself if you need to!

Tips for crafting a knockout birthday speech

Do your research.

If you're being asked to speak at a birthday celebration, then you probably know the person who is having a birthday pretty well. But that doesn't mean you can skip this all-important step!

Find out a little MORE about the guest of honor that you didn't know. Ask their friends or family members to tell you a unique story about the person you are honoring. These kinds of memories can make great material to put into your speech. Memories from family members tend to be of a touching, sensitive nature, whereas the recollections of friends are often hilarious! Using both will give you a well-rounded speech that will appeal to everyone. Plus, you'll get to know some of the guests better, so you'll be more at ease speaking in front of them.

Birthday Speech

Be Sensitive

Some people treat a birthday speech as an opportunity to roast the guest of honor. While a little bit of joking around is acceptable - and can be fun - don't try to embarrass the individual.

This is their special day, one which they should be enjoying. Make an attempt to really honor who they are, by acknowledging their contribution to your life and the lives of all the people in attendance.

Know the Audience

Ask a professional speaker, and they will tell you that you have to know the audience to deliver a great speech.

This doesn't mean that you have to be acquainted with every guest, but you should know the general make-up of the crowd.

Are the guests all family and close friends? Are there co-workers present? How about kids?

You have to be sensitive to the audience before you deliver your speech. Being prepared means inquiring about the people in attendance.

Leave on a High Note

Remember, your speech is meant to honor and celebrate someone on a momentous occasion.

Don't ramble or get muddled with complex topics. Keep the general tone light and celebratory. Be sure to tell the person a happy birthday and thank the person who invited you to speak.

Birthday parties are meant to be fun occasions. Make sure that you keep these tips in mind when you are asked to speak for friends or family members at their party.

You'll probably bring a gift to the party, but a great birthday speech may be the gift that the guest of honor will remember the most.

Birthday parties are truly special for the person whose birthday is being celebrated. Organizing birthday parties is a popular activity nowadays, but these days, even welcome talks are arranged by the individual or by someone close to him or her, such as the individual's parents, brother, sister, or close friends. We have provided a few lines on birthday party speeches for students of Classes 1 to 12. Students can refer to the below-given speeches to get an idea of how to write a birthday speech for their friends, family, or school essay.

You don’t have to stick to the exact format. If you want to improvise, then go ahead! In case you are a beginner and need some assistance with introductions, then read through the whole article as we have presented various options for you to pick from. Either way, this article can help build your structure for a killer intro!

Long Welcome Speech for Birthday Party

First example.

So, at long last, it's my birthday, the day I've been looking forward to for so long. I couldn't be happier today because everyone is here, from my family to my friends, to fill my heart with joy and to bless me. The best part is that no one is missing, and everyone has shown up today. Thank you all so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to help me and make this celebration more graceful. Indeed, this goes above and beyond what I could have asked for.

On my eighteenth birthday, I'd like to say a few words before we begin the cake cutting ceremony, especially for my parents. Mom and Dad, I barely have the words to express my love for you.

I've been sent to the best school for my education, and by God's grace, I've made such great friends who are truly like a second family to me. I pray to God for my parents' health and happiness. May they smile for the rest of their lives! Last but not least, I want to express my gratitude to my friends, who have been of tremendous assistance to me and have stood by me through difficult times.

My confidence had dropped to an all-time low, and I wasn't doing well in school; at that point, my friends yanked me out of that slump and forced me to recognize my efficiency levels. That is the value of friends. They're the ones who take the fun out of your life and turn you into a horde of drama queens. They keep you going.

So thank you all for being a part of my life, and thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful family and friends.

Honestly, I think words are not enough to express how grateful I am to be a part of your life. Lastly, I would like to thank my sister for supporting me, always. You are a remarkable 16-year-old young lady. You have a great sense of self-sufficiency that I admire and respect. Whether you're spending hours at the "Math Club" or obsessing over every detail of any school project, you have the power to thrive. You inspire me to be the best version of myself.

Now, without further ado, I'd like to conclude my remarks and politely request that everyone proceed to the main corridor for the cake cutting ceremony. Dinner will be served after that, and there will also be a dance party for all of my friends who want to shake their legs.

I am confident that you will all appreciate our efforts and assist me in making my birthday even more memorable.

Thank you for joining us today! Your presence means the world to me.

Second Example

Hey everyone!

Thank you so much for coming! I couldn’t think of anyone better to celebrate my birthday with other than you all. This year has been quite eventful and it was not easy for me. I am so thankful to my parents for helping me and being there by my side throughout this journey. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for them.

I am so proud of my friend's circle because I know I found something genuine and this is the group that I want to stick with through life. These guys have been there with me through my highs and lows and they are the funniest bunch of people I have ever known in my life. They can make fun of the most boring thing and I have the best entertainment that I could have ever asked for.

To everyone else that is present here, I am grateful to have you in my life and I hope we all can have a great time today and make millions of memories. We are just getting started and please make sure that you eat and go as we have some exciting snacks and dishes cooked up for you! Thank you.

Short Birthday Speech in English

Good Evening!

As we gather to celebrate my daughter's 15th birthday, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to everyone. So, my little girl has turned fifteen, and it's weird because I can't believe how quickly she's grown up. It seems like it was only yesterday that she used to walk with us holding our hands.

As guardians, we think it's amazing. I will try my best not to stress her out but I won't go all soft on her, and we'll just talk about her mischief today. Try not to be surprised; I assure you that you will not be humiliated.

We've watched you grow up, taking those first steps, bumbling, stumbling, and getting back up again. Furthermore, I would now consider you to be a confident young woman full of hopes and aspirations, ready to take on the world. It fills me with joy to see our wonderful little girl blossom and experience childhood right before our eyes.

Honey, every time you do the right thing for us with your honorable discussions and attempts, you surprise us and we thank God for blessing us with you. It's safe to say that today is one of the most significant days of our lives.

I know without a doubt that one glorious day, a long time from now, you will reflect on this wonderful day, and a big grin will appear on your face. As a result, we can make the most of it and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

Last but not least, I'd like to express my gratitude to each one of our guests for attending our daughter's birthday celebration. The celebration would not have been as energizing if you hadn't all been near. You've all multiplied the fervor’s remainder, so the celebrations can begin right away.

I owe you a significant debt of gratitude for being such a patient audience.

Wishing you good health and a lot of love!

Good evening people!

What a day! I still remember crying my eyes out seeing my little boy struggling to open his eyes as the light was too strong for him to bear. Somehow this is the day every mother dreads and loves because her little baby is all grown up now. I am so grateful to be your mother and today I hope you will know how loved and appreciated you are by every single person here. Well, not just today but every day, however since today is your birthday, you can get all the special treatment and extra love.

I hope you grow up to be a man of honor, integrity and discipline. May you respect everyone despite their opinions, gender, values and belief system. You always stood your ground for what you believed in and I love that about you. Don’t let anyone change that. May you be humble enough to accept growth and change in life but also confident and bold enough to not let people walk all over you or be naïve.

Your heart to help people regardless of what they’ve done inspires me. Don’t let the darkness of this world ever step onto your light. Don’t let your goodness be based on people’s actions towards you. I am so proud of you and I hope you will find everything that you are looking for!

Enough life lessons for today, now let's show this boy what real fun looks like in life!

10 Lines on Welcome to Birthday Party Speech

Here, we have curated a few lines on birthday party speeches for students of Classes 1 to 3.

Good evening, everyone, and welcome to my son's 18th birthday party.

We'd like to thank everyone for being a part of this beautiful occasion because, as they say, you only turn 18 once.

Tonight is the night for a big bash. Our lovely debutant has matured into a gentleman.

This is a significant occasion in his life, and he is grateful for your presence.

No more fairy tales every night, like Wendy in Peter Pan. He is now an adult, having ascended to a much higher level of what we refer to as LIFE.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you, for the first time, the reason we are all gathered here tonight, as he makes his debut into adult society.

Some of us have had the privilege of witnessing his development into a fine gentleman, but for those who haven't, here's a look back at his 18 years in one brief video.

I also have to thank a very special person, my wife, for her love and support, as well as for giving me two of the best presents any man could ask for, my children.

So, let's go ahead and capture some magical moments. As we celebrate this special occasion, let us make happy memories and surround ourselves with laughter and friendship.

Have a good time, and thank you for joining us.

Let’s make this the most memorable 18 th birthday ever celebrated!

If there is ever going to be the coolest 18 year old in the world, it is our “name of the birthday boy/girl“!

The world is not ready for the adult version of “name of the birthday boy/girl”

Let's help him enjoy his birthday before life hits him like a hurricane!

We all need to show our support and love to him as he has no idea what’s about to him.

Birthday parties provide an opportunity for children to socialize outside of the classroom. They are not required to sit quietly at their desks, nor are they involved in academic activities. Instead, they're having fun and participating in activities that everyone enjoys. The welcome speech for the Birthday party is a way to show your gratitude towards all the guests and share your thoughts on the occasion.

It also helps set the tone for the party. It is very important to make sure that the introduction is lively and fun as it will create a sense of anticipation and excitement among the audience. All the elements of the party shouldn’t be given away at once as there won’t be any sense of mystery. Instead, the MC (Mic Controller) should make the guests aware of the fact that there might be some fun activities or surprises like a treasure hunt or a scavenger hunt but he should make sure to hold on to the fun details of it!

Welcome speeches can be personal as well as informal as this will create more connection between the guest and audience. Humor is a vital part of any speech, party, event etc. Nobody likes a monotonous speech, especially children. The MC should captivate everyone with quirky remarks or silly jokes as this will help keep them engaged. It's all about making the party fun and memorable for the birthday boy/girl as well as the guests.

Being an MC and speaking well is not as complicated as it seems to be. Just follow the phrases and tips given and create a structure for yourself. Let the rest just follow as you go forward with the program.

Birthday speech

Putting a birthday speech together can be a very daunting process, especially if you have to write it for someone else.

Like many of us, unless you have a natural talent, it’s not uncommon to go blank when it comes to this topic. The usual spiel of thanking everyone and telling them to enjoy their night is satisfactory though can be quite boring and leave everyone yawning.

But dont worry, by following these easy tips and examples of speeches, you will be able to ensure your birthday speech is one that captivates your audience and makes the moment a memorable one.

5 tips to help you with your next birthday speech

1. write it all down.

Take a few moments to list all the qualities and funny moments in dot points to give you an understanding of what you want to highlight. After listing them all down, take the time to elaborate on the points.

2. Find a sample speech that works

Find a sample birthday speech that you feel is suitable for the occasion. Use the points and information that you had written previously and incorporate them into the sample speech. By using the sample speech as a template, you have the benefit of following a proven recipe. It allows for the speech to be structured so it becomes fluent and highlights your points more concisely.

3. Engage your audience

Add humor to the speech to captivate your audience with a few laughs to enhance the vibe of the event. Not sure what to add? Why not take a moment to ask a close friend or relative of some funny moments they have experienced with the birthday person. If the stories are not suitable or non existent, then consider looking up some great one liners and add them into your speech to lighten the mood.

Your aim is to ensure the audience is actively engaged in your speech by focusing on the qualities of the birthday person which they can relate to. Bringing up memorable stories which highlight great times or milestones helps to resonate qualities of the birthday person and Incorporating a story or two can also make a point of enhancing the qualities which resonates what that person is really about.

4. Show sincerity

Towards the end of the speech, mention a few kind words to show them that you care. Thank everyone for coming, especially those who helped out in organising the event.

5. Keep it short

When people are at a party, they tend to have a short attention span and that’s if they haven’t had a drink yet. A speech which is between 2-5 minutes long is more than sufficient. By keeping it short, deep and meaningful, you can be sure to have your audience’s attention.

How to give a birthday speech – From friend to guest of honor

Here are a few examples of free birthday speeches for your next occasion:

Birthday speech example 1 – Thank you speech

Birthday speech

Firstly I would like to thank you all for coming to celebrate this milestone with me. I am not one to come out and say a speech, this is actually the first for me. Normally I would shy off, though I feel today is a time where it must be done.

The reason why you are all here is that in one way or another, you have been apart of my life and moulded me to the person I am today. I would truly like to thank you all for that.

I would like to thank both my mom and dad for not only putting up with me but being there when it counted and making me who I am. Thank you! Also to those who I have grown up with and have helped me over the years, you know who you are… I can say that I am truly blessed to have you all in my life!

Last but not least, I need to say thank you to everyone who has helped to set up and make today happen. Now that’s enough of me saying thank you. I hope everyone enjoys themselves. Lets all have a drink and have a great time.

Birthday speech example 2 – Thank you speech

I want to take a moment to say thank you for everyone who has come down to come celebrate this birthday with me. It means a lot that you have all taken the time and I must say that I am blessed to have each and every one of you in my life. Thank you

Birthday speech example 3 – Thank you speech

A birthday is very important to a child. The cake, the candles and gifts are something which they which they look forward to weeks on end. As we get older, we begin to realize that more important than materialistic things are the things we celebrate to those who are most closest to us. I would like to say thank you for not only your best wishes and lovely gifts but for being here and making it the night that it is. Thank you.

Birthday speech example 4 – Coming of age and gratitude

I have to say that I am not one to perform any birthday speeches though with the amount of work which was put into making this night and the sheer turnout of people, I simply could not live with myself if I didn’t at least say a few words.

I would like to give a big shout out to all people involved it the planning of this special day of mine. As you all can see, a lot of time and effort has been spent to make this venue look beautiful and I am truly appreciative. Thank you.

For all of you who made the effort to come down here and celebrate this milestone of mine. I could not be happier as all of you in one way, shape, or form have shaped me to be the person I am today and for that I am eternally grateful. Through good times and bad, through sickness and in health, I have been supported and guided every step of the way and that has only reassured to me what really matters in life.

I have been quick to learn that all the flashy and shiny things in life slowly begin to fade, though the one thing that continues to shine in my world is the true connections and relationships I have formed with my family and friends.

So enough about all this sentimental nonsense. It’s time to put the music back on and get everyone back on this dance floor. Thank you all for coming and I hope you enjoy the night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 5 – Coming of age

So whilst I am up here talking about this amazing day today we are celebrating, I have to say all the beautiful memories don’t I? Wrong. All I remember is the most embarrassing moments because I laughed so hard my glasses fell off my head, then I wasn’t too happy because I had to buy new ones.

So where do I start, my memory isn’t the best the older I get, that’s why my wife makes me do a crossword puzzle a day. Little does she know that I cheat from the answers on the bottom of the cross word page Ha-Ha. So as I get older and reflect, I would have to say best moments through out my life would have to be drawn to three main beautiful ones.

First would be marrying this beautiful lady I call my cook… I mean wife Ha-Ha.

Second would be becoming a father to these beautiful children standing in front of me, I am blessed to have the opportunity to raise these amazing children of mine and have never been more proud.

And thirdly, to the many people here today celebrating my birthday. I would not be the person standing here before you if it weren’t for each and everyone of you shaping me to who I am today.

I felt like writing this speech took me few minutes though I was told I was writing for most of the bloody day! Ha-Ha.

Thank you everyone for coming here today and celebrating this unforgettable night with me celebrating another year younger.

Birthday speech example 6 – For partner

Let’s face the truth. Some of us are not the best when it comes to remembering birthdays, but there is no way I could forget the birthday for the one I love. We are all here today to celebrate because (Name) has touched our lives in one way or another.

Today I want to openly say how much they mean to me. This is their birthday, and birthdays are supposed to be days which stand out in life. So (Name), I want to say thank you for being so caring over the years and making me so proud to be your partner.

Birthday speech example 7 – Birthday speech for husband

To the superman in my life. Happy birthday! Words are unable to express the amount of love I have for you. For anyone who knows you, knows how much of a kind hearted and bubbly character you are. Your generosity and strong nature are unlike no other I have ever met.

From when you came over to me over 20 years ago to ask me for my number, to building a strong relationship, falling in love, creating an incredible family, and now celebrating this milestone of yours today. It seems like a fairytale dream where I need to pinch myself every so often to believe that it is all true.

To all of you that have made the time to make it here tonight, thank you all for coming. Only people who were important to his life are here and it’s amazing how many people are actually here tonight.

Now back to my loving husband, on your birthday tonight, I want you to enjoy it without a care in the world, because a man like you deserves to be spoilt once in awhile. Happy birthday my love, may you continue to live with passion.

Birthday speech example 8 -Birthday speech for wife

To one of the most sexiest, beautiful, most amazing person apart from myself… Ha-Ha! To my incredible wife. I am unable to express how surreal it feels to have fallen in love and married such a beautiful soul. Never would I ever have thought i’d be so lucky to have such an angel like you in my life. Your smile, your character, your loving nature are just the tip of the iceberg of the many things you possess.

For all who are lucky enough to know her, understand that she is one who would do more for others than she would for herself. A quality which i’m sure we all agree is very rare these days. She always looks to see the positive in life, no matter how dark and gloomy things may be, something which she has allowed for me to adopt which has changed my life dramatically for the better, and i’m sure many others who are also here tonight.

To those who made the effort to come here today and celebrate this beautiful day today, thank you. You have made this day memorable and something i’m sure my wife will never forget. Now the party is still not over, so all of you grab a glass of champagne, and let’s party on well into the night as we celebrate this girls beautiful birthday.

Birthday speech example 9 – From mother to child

From changing your nappies to feeding you every time you cry, to making your favorite food which was always apple pie. The memories I have shared with you while growing up by your side, it was well worth the struggles and bumpy rides.

I look at you know and can’t stop smiling, for a beautiful grown boy/girl that you have become, no matter what you will always be my baby boy/girl, happy birthday and may this be another memory you will never forget like they first day we met. When you were born on this special day.

Birthday speech example 10 – 1 st birthday speech from mother

Even though your only one and you’re probably staring at me thinking what it this lady doing, my feeding time is soon. I am going to say this speech in front of all the family friends that are gathered here today to celebrate my child’s 1st birthday, where the fun times just keep getting better and better.

I remember the first day that I felt so sick and then after that my pants wouldn’t fit. I started eating everything in sight and my pantry would always start full and now and by night there was nothing left to right. After that I couldn’t sleep and I would become a grump in the morning which was nothing of the unusual Ha-Ha.

Then my feet started to swell jeez now I can’t find shoes that will fit well. So after all that complaining and whining, the day came where you were brought into this world. Your father had fainted, which was nothing unusual and all I cared about was that you were finally out!

Now, as we celebrate your 1st birthday, you don’t understand anything right now, but when you do I’ll be saying another speech like this to embarrass you. More for the loving mother that I am to make sure you never forget something so important like this day.

Birthday speech example 11 – From father to son

I guess I will start with most that I know and the beautiful things I remember. I was the happiest man when I found out you were a boy, I was filled with joy! Everyday I would buy my little man a different toy, but there was a problem. Instead of playing with them, I would find you out in the garden. Eating dirt, mud, insects and even snails. You weren’t very good at hiding your muddy trails. How sweet and cute that was.

Then you would complain of feeling sick. Sometimes you were so difficult, just like trying to use a chopstick. You would always cry when I tried to feed you, and you loved to pee on me when I tried to change you. You were a sneaky little bugger and you loved to touch. I even remember having to pull you away from someone’s crotch. These are the beautiful memories that I remember.

Though enough with me embarrassing you with these funny times, this is you birthday so let it be filled with great times. So happy birthday to my great son, never forget that you are my number one!

Birthday speech example 12 – From friend

On this milestone that you have achieved, what an honor it is to be sharing this celebration with you. As we all know, this person has been determined since they were little, to strive and be the best they can, no matter what the circumstances were.

As (Insert name) continued to grow and mature, they created beautiful memories by making each moment count and radiating the love filled passions to each one that they came across. Im sure we can all say that we are eternally grateful that you have came into our lives and that you never lose your zest for life as you grow up into adulthood.

We all love you dearly and wish you nothing but the absolute best as that is what you truly deserve. Happy birthday!

Birthday speech example 13 – 21st Funny birthday speech from friend

Can I have your attention. We are all here today to realise something special. Something so worthwhile to celebrate. Something fun, enjoyable and memorable. We have come here together to recognise and share in the joy this moment brings. I am talking about the open bar! Ha-Ha!

On a more serious note, I would like to draw your attention to one of my best of friends whose 21st birthday we are celebrating here tonight. I have known (Insert name) for more than 10 years and during that time, we have had many moments of fun, adventure and as many of you may know, mischief. Whenever together, we always seemed to find a way to get ourselves into trouble.

Just like the time we decided to play a trick on his mom by colouring in his younger brothers face an interesting shade of green. We took the time to make it look realistic and ensured it was with a permanent marker so it couldn’t be easily rubbed off. I remember the look on his mom’s face as she freaked out and rushed the brother to the hospital. After the doctor giving it the once over and explaining to his mom the cause of the problem. I remember her glaring at us in a trance like state. Lets just say I had never seen someones face go that red before. We both found it to be funny at the time though I don’t think he saw the light of day for at least a month after that incident. Ha-Ha

Anyone who knows him, knows that he will go out of his way to ensure everyone is having a laugh. Even at his own expense, he wants to ensure everyone is having a great time.

He has taken on many challenges, and succeeded many times. Not by chance, but by perseverance and heart. Anyone who knows (Insert name), knows he is full of heart.

So on this milestone may you continue to strive for all that you want and just wanted to let you know that I am grateful to have such a great friend like you. Happy Birthday.

Birthday speech example 14 – 21st birthday speech

Yay! Im finally legal! Wow, this has been a long time coming for me, I mean now i can have a drink… Legally! Ha-Ha! Mum doesn’t seem to impressed!

Firstly I’d like to give a massive shout out to my parents, for not only raising such an awesome child, Ha-Ha! But also for making me who I am, and making this beautiful day happen. To my beautiful family members who cooked up all this beautiful food and helped to decorate this place, thank you so much, it looks absolutely beautiful.

To my wacky and crazy friends. You are all a bad influence on me and I thank you for that. Don’t worry mum, i’m only joking… It’s more like the other way around… Ha-Ha! As I get older, I begin to appreciate the significance of true family and friends in one’s life. I have to say that I couldn’t consider myself any luckier to have all of you in my life.

So anyway, let’s get out the champagne and celebrate my 21st birthday!

Birthday speech example 15 – 40th birthday speech

I can’t believe my 30’s have left me… I think it’s about time I started acting more serious and more so, my age… Well, maybe after tonight…

I remember when I was much younger, I would look at someone who was 40 and say to myself, that’s an old person. Now that I have turned the big 4-0! I now realise it was just an old person who was trying to figure out where the hell all the time went! Ha-Ha! I guess time flies when you’re having fun. Well I Know it’s definitely true for me. I’ll tell you why.

Firstly I have an amazing wife who is nothing but a bundle of joy to be around, and is able to always find a way to put a smile on my face.

Secondly I have been blessed with two beautiful boys who are an absolute pain in my ass, Ha-Ha! Though I do love so dearly! Apart from my gorgeous wife, I never thought I would love these boys so much, as much as I do. It must be because they remind me so much of me when I was growing up… Ha-Ha!

And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

Anyway, enough with all this sentimental crap, let’s pump the music back up, all grab a drink and at least let me celebrate being 39 one more time! Ha-Ha! Thank you!

Birthday speech example 16 – 50th birthday speech

Wow, how time flies! It’s only yesterday I can remember starting my first job at McDonalds where I met my best friend. And now I have a glass of champagne in my hand, celebrating my 50th birthday in front of all of you amazing people.

Where do I start? Firstly I need to give a massive shout out to my beautiful wife who made tonight happen. To not only organise all of this, but also keep it a secret from me which I am blown away how much effort she put in. The amount of detail she has put into this venue is incredible. Such an amazing woman, and I mean look at her, even after all these years, she is still a stunner!

To my two boys, I am proud of both of you and must say you are both still a pain in my ass. Must be because you remind me of when I was a kid growing up. Ha-Ha, they do say that karma eventually comes around. I can now understand what I put my parents through when I was growing up! But jokes aside they a great boys and couldn’t wish for any better.

Obviously I need to give a shout out to mum and dad for putting up with me over my younger years. Considering i’m sure many of you agree, I was no angel growing up. I like to think I turned out alright. Ha-Ha! Though I do have to say they were always there for support and was truly blessed to have incredible parents. I love you both.

To all my close family and friends here tonight. Thank you all for coming and most importantly, thank you for being apart of my life. All of you, in one way or another have been apart of my incredible journey of being 50 years on this earth and I wouldn’t want it any way.

So everybody grab a drink and let’s turn this music up, because i’m pretty sure you will all agree that after all these years and crazy memories, who would have known I would have made it this far. Ha-Ha! Thank you all for coming and hope you enjoy your night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 17 – From daughter to fathers 50th birthday speech

For those of you whose memories are fading or may have had a little too much to drink tonight, we are here to celebrate the birthday of my dad. Fifty years ago today, the world was given a great gift. A gift by the name of (Insert name). The first of three children, my father was and still is, a very funny and generous man. Throughout the years, he has told many of us his overly simplistic, corny jokes which keeps us all laughing to this day. Just earlier he told me a joke and had me giggling like a little girl again. He said “What do you call a cheese that’s not yours? Nacho Cheese!”. I know, corny right? But it still does the job.

I suppose the main reason why we all have a little laugh and look forward to his humor is that he always likes to remind us that life is not meant to be taken too seriously and that laughter helps to keep us grounded. To this day, I have incorporated this philosophy into my life and I am sure all of us look forward to the energy and humor that he gives us.

Married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years, and with two pretty awesome kids, Ha-Ha. Sorry but I had to add that in. He has shown to be the best role model any family could ask for.

He has always been one to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and is not shy to have a casual drink when in good company.

On this birthday, may you enjoy your night and continue to pass on your energy and happiness for many more years to come. Happy birthday dad!

Birthday speech example 18 – 60th birthday speech

I can’t believe that as I stand here before you, I have been on this earth for 60 years. Seems like a long time, though for me, it feels like only yesterday I was celebrating my 21st birthday. I ought to cut out drinking or before I know it, i’ll be 100 soon. Ha-Ha!

For me, I have experienced both the joys and miseries of life and through it all, I have been able to take one thing from it. Regardless of life’s ups and downs, its all about making the most out of each situation and being present in the moment. Because as I get older, I begin to appreciate all of the moments life has to offer and the truth of the matter is that nothing is owed to us. For every day we wake up is a blessing. And as I am now 60 years old and CONSIDERED wise… Ha-Ha! I feel that we should make the most of each passing day, and what better way with both family and loved ones.

Lucky for me, I have been extremely fortunate to have all of my nearest and dearest to me all here tonight and I have to say, I wouldn’t want to have tonight any other way. Although it may be the wine talking, I must say that I love each and everyone of you here tonight… Especially the caterer, the food served here has been delicious! Ha-Ha! Now let’s all embarrass ourselves by having a few more drinks and getting on the dance floor!

Welcome Speech for Birthday Party – Sample 1

Hello Friends – I welcome everyone to my birthday party!

So finally it’s my birthday, the day that I have been waiting for so long. I couldn’t have been happier today as everyone is present here right from my family to friends, to make my day extra special. The best part is that no one is missing and everyone has made it today. Really thank you everyone for taking time out for me and adding grace to this party.

Before we proceed for the cake cutting celebration, I would like to say a few words, especially for my parents. I want to thank my parents from the bottom of my heart for throwing this wonderful party on my 18 th birthday, this cannot get any better. In fact, this is more than I could have asked for. I hardly could express my feeling for you, Mom and Dad.

But today, I don’t want to miss the opportunity and make it to the most by expressing my feeling for my loved ones. You both have always fulfilled my desires without making me realize that most of the times I had been too demanding and unfair towards both of you. I have been given the complete freedom to decide for myself and you both have been there as a guiding torch. You never have tried to clip my wings and I have flown in full swing so much so that I stand here today as a confident girl who believes that she can achieve anything that she wants to and can take informed decisions on her own.

I have been sent to the best school for my education and by the grace of God I have come across such great friends who are indeed like a second family to me. I pray to God for my parents’ healthy and prosperous life. May they continue to smile like this forever! And last, but not the least, I want to thank my friends who have been a great support to me and stood by me during hard times. There was a time when my confidence became very low and I was not performing well in studies, then my friends pulled me off from that zone and made me realize my inner strength. That’s how true friends are, isn’t? They are the ones who bring fun element in your life and make you a crazy bunch of fools.

So thank you all of you for being a part of my life and thanks to the God for blessing me with a wonderful family and amazing friends. Now, without any ado I would like to bring an end to my speech and request everyone to kindly proceed towards the main hall for the cake cutting celebration. Post this, dinner will be served and there is also a dance party for all my friends who are looking forward to shake their legs.

I hope you all will enjoy with us and help me in making my birthday more memorable.

Welcome Speech for Birthday Party – Sample 2

Hello Everyone – I, the father of Riya, welcome everyone on her 16 th birthday party.

So my little daughter is turned 16, it really feels surreal because I cannot come to understand myself that our daughter has grown this big. It feels as if it was about yesterday when she used to hold our hands in order to walk. It is incredible for us as parents. Don’t worry Riya, I won’t get all mushy and I will only talk about your childhood mischief today. Don’t be so surprised, I promise that it is not intended to embarrass you.

You are the apple of our eyes and we consider ourselves lucky to be your parents. You have always been that sincere child who has never troubled us and listened to us with a lot of patience. We really pray to God for your long and healthy life. We have watched you grow up, taking those baby steps, stumbling, falling and then getting up again. And today I can see you as a confident girl filled with dreams and hopes; ready to take on the world. It makes me so emotional seeing our beautiful daughter blossoming and growing up in front of our eyes. Literally beta, you amaze us and thank God every time you make us proud with your noble acts and endeavors.

It goes without saying that today is one of the best days of our lives.

I know for a fact that one fine day; a couple of years from now you will look back and recall this special day, which will bring a big smile on your face. So let’s make it to the most and create wonderful memories which will stay with us for our lives.

Riya, on your special day your mother and I promise you to always stand by you and support all your decisions. We really adore you and we believe that you are a result of your good deeds. On this day, we want just one promise from you that you will never ever change yourself and continue to work hard in making your life bigger and better.

I hope you like the preparation and the entire set up. It took us a couple of days to decide the theme and the venue of your party. I hope it goes well with your taste and preference. Last, but not least I want to thank all our guests for making to our daughter’s birthday party. Without the presence of you all, the party wouldn’t have been this exciting. You all have doubled the excitement quotient and now let the party begin without any further delay.

I would request all our guests to please have dinner after the cake cutting celebration and also join us at the DJ. We will be looking forward to some amazing dance performances by our guests. With this, I would like to end my speech.

Thank you so much for being such a patient listener.

Welcome Speech for Birthday Party – Sample 3

It feels slightly awkward to be celebrating my birthday like this at this stage of my life when I am married and have a 2 year old baby. I already feel so blessed and happy having such a wonderful wife by my side and my baby who mean the whole world to me. I feel so complete and really enjoying my married life. And now this birthday party has come as a huge surprise to me, of course I am pleasantly surprised. Little do I realize that my birthday party would be planned this grand and all my favorite people would be present here.

I will have to applaud the efforts of my wife and extend a huge thank you to her for doing all this for me. However, she wrested the responsibility of delivering the welcome speech on me, which I haven’t liked! Ha-ha, of course I am not prepared for it, right! So it’s an impromptu and whatever I am saying is coming straight from my heart. I am feeling extremely emotional today seeing all this. I am sure it must have taken her a month at least to prepare for all this. Right from choosing the venue to making all the requisite arrangements to inviting all my friends must have been quite a task and on the top of this handling our super naughty baby. No word can well convey my emotions that I am currently experiencing.

Last, but not the least, I would want to thank all my friends for making to my birthday party despite all odds. I am sure you must be having other priorities too but you sidelined everything just to be here. It feels amazing to be together here like this after so long as I clearly remember we all gathered like this; 3 years back on our friend’s destination wedding.

Let me assure you friends we are again going to have a gala time together. Before going for the cake cutting, I want to make an announcement that you can feel free here and let your children enjoy amongst themselves. Here is one section dedicated to children which has all the toys and games so send your children there without having to worry about them.

Now let’s go to the cake cutting area.

With this, I would like to end my speech and thank you all once again for patiently listening to me and being so sporting.

Welcome Speech for Birthday Party – Sample 4

Hello Everyone – I am glad to see you all on my birthday party!

I hope you have had no difficulty in locating the venue. This venue is easy to locate as it is situated on one of the famous roads of Mumbai. You must be wondering why am I throwing this birthday party, when I could have easily given you the party in the office. Actually, I am really feeling homesick these days and due to the added work responsibilities, I couldn’t go back home and meet my parents. Otherwise, as the ritual goes I should have been meeting my parents today. However, I am not regretting it, it’s just that I am missing my parents and my mother’s delicious dishes especially prepared for me.

They couldn’t have come here either because of the awaited wedding of my brother. Anyways, I don’t want to get sentimental and rather enjoy this party with you all to the fullest. Before proceeding for the party, I would like to say a few words.

I want to thank my friends those who have come all the way from Delhi and Ahmadabad for me. I cannot thank you enough and my happiness knows no bounds today. Guys, do you even realize we are meeting after so long? I am so glad that today some of my school, college and office friends are gathered under one roof. Let’s not keep any reservations today and enjoy to the fullest. There is also an arrangement for the DJ party, which I am sure most of you would be looking forward to. But amidst this frenzy don’t forget to relish snacks and of course dinner.

I am sure you just can’t wait to party hard, but friends I would request you to keep a little more patience. Actually, my school friends have kept a surprise and they want to run a small film. I hope you all would want to watch it for me, right? So let’s first watch it. ………………. (Movie Running!)

Ufff, this just couldn’t have been better and I couldn’t have asked for any other gift! I loved every bit of it. Guys, how you have managed all these pictures? Well, I can recollect those days, but some of the pictures have been taken without my realization. I am pleasantly surprised, good job friends. Thank you so much for making my birthday so memorable with this.

Now, without any further ado let’s do the cake cutting ceremony as we have our office tomorrow and I know some of you have to travel a considerable distance. The party will go until 12:30 am, but those of you want to leave earlier can leave. I completely understand! The fact that you all took time out for my birthday party is more than enough.

With this, I want to rest my speech.

Once again thank you everyone for coming here and listening to my emotional outpourings with this patience.

At Berkeley, a Protest at a Dean’s Home Tests the Limits of Free Speech

Pro-Palestinian supporters disrupted a dinner for law students. There was a tussle over the microphone and conflicting claims of harm.

The dean of Berkeley’s law school is known as a staunch supporter of free speech, but things became personal for him when pro-Palestinian students disrupted a celebratory dinner party for some 60 students at his home.

Erwin Chemerinsky, the law school dean, hosted the dinner on Tuesday night in the backyard of his Oakland, Calif., home. The party was supposed to be a community building event, open to all third-year law students, with no speeches or formal activities.

But a third-year law student and a Palestinian activist, Malak Afaneh, stood up at the event, holding a microphone, and launched into a speech.

As she began to talk, Mr. Chemerinsky, a noted Constitutional scholar, can be seen shouting, “Please leave our house! You are guests in our house!”

Catherine Fisk, another Berkeley law professor and Mr. Chemerinsky’s wife, can be seen with her arm around Ms. Afaneh, trying to yank the microphone away and pulling the student up a couple steps.

Ms. Afaneh and other student protesters described Ms. Fisk’s struggle for the microphone as a disproportionate and violent response. Students, they said, had a right to speak at a university gathering.

Mr. Chemerinsky said the dinner was paid for by the university. But he said that the students, who brought their own microphone and amp, had no such free speech rights in a private home, at a dinner with no planned remarks.

In the past, Mr. Chemerinsky has supported speech rights for pro-Palestinian students, including the right to block Zionists from speaking to their groups. But this latest incident shows how the Israel-Hamas war has intensified and complicated the free speech debate. As pro-Palestinian students stage sit-ins and disrupt events at campuses across the country, some administrators, pressed by donors and politicians, have cracked down on unruly behavior, arresting and suspending students.

The moment has been especially fraught for the University of California, Berkeley, long a hotbed of leftist activism and the home of the ’60s Free Speech movement. As protests there continue over the Middle East conflict, some Jewish students and alumni have criticized university officials, saying that the school has tolerated activism that veers into antisemitic speech.

On Thursday night, about 15 protesters returned to Mr. Chemerinsky’s home for another student dinner, this time staying outside the house for about 90 minutes, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

“They were carrying signs and had drums,” he wrote in an email message. “They stood in front of our house chanting (some quite offensive) and banging their drums.”

In February, an event at Berkeley featuring an Israeli speaker was canceled after a crowd of protesters broke down doors, which the chancellor, Carol Christ, said was “an attack on the fundamental values of the university.” Last month, Representative Virginia Foxx, chair of the House committee on education that has been investigating antisemitism on campus, sent a letter to university officials demanding documents and information about Berkeley’s response to antisemitism.

Mr. Chemerinsky said that he himself was the subject of an antisemitic flier, circulated earlier in the week, which depicted a cartoon image of him gripping a bloody knife and fork, with the words “No Dinner With Zionist Chem While Gaza Starves.”

“I never thought I would see such blatant antisemitism,” he wrote in a statement to the law school community after the first protest, “with an image that invokes the horrible antisemitic trope of blood libel and that attacks me for no apparent reason other than I am Jewish.”

The Berkeley chapter of Law Students for Justice in Palestine, where Ms. Afaneh is co-president, did not respond to requests for an interview. But Camilo Pérez-Bustillo, the executive director of the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, said that Mr. Chemerinsky was not singled out because he is Jewish.

“He was being targeted because he’s failed to take a public position on a matter of urgency,” Mr. Pérez-Bustillo said, “which is U.S. complicity with the unfolding genocide.”

In the video, Ms. Afaneh said, the National Lawyers Guild “has informed us this is our First Amendment right.”

The Chemerinsky dinner on Tuesday fell on the last day of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. As Ms. Afaneh and Professor Fisk both gripped the microphone, Ms. Afaneh said, “We refuse to break our fast on the blood of Palestinian people” and accused the university system of sending billions of dollars to weapons manufacturers.

“I have nothing to do with what the U.C. does,” Ms. Fisk said. “This is my home.”

Ms. Fisk threatened to call the police but did not. After she let go of the microphone, Ms. Afaneh and about 10 other law students left peacefully and the dinner continued, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

“I am enormously sad that we have students who are so rude as to come into my home, in my backyard, and use this social occasion for their political agenda,” Mr. Chemerinsky wrote. Through Mr. Chemerinsky, Ms. Fisk declined to be interviewed.

Many pro-Palestinian supporters argue this is not the moment for decorum, as the death toll of Israel’s bombing in Gaza tops 30,000, according to Gaza health officials. The protesting students wanted Mr. Chemerinsky, who describes himself as a Zionist, to denounce what they described as an unfolding genocide and to call for the university to divest from companies that aid Israel’s military campaign.

After the dinner altercation, the Law Students for Justice in Palestine chapter demanded the resignations of Mr. Chemerinsky and Ms. Fisk, and called for a Palestine studies program that centers on the “resistance and the right to return in a settler-colonial context.”

Richard Leib, the board chairman of the University of California system, and Ms. Christ, the Berkeley chancellor, have supported the couple.

“I am appalled and deeply disturbed by what occurred at Dean Chemerinsky’s home last night,” Ms. Christ said in a statement on Wednesday. “While our support for Free Speech is unwavering, we cannot condone using a social occasion at a person’s private residence as a platform for protest.”

Mr. Chemerinsky said he invites first-year law students to a welcome dinner in his backyard to create a sense of community. This dinner — spread over three nights with about 60 students each — was for third-year students whose traditional welcome dinner was canceled because of Covid, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

The dean said he was such a believer in the tradition that when he bought a home in 2017, he made sure the backyard could fit a crowd.

“I never could have imagined this would be divisive or a flashpoint,” he said, adding, “It’s an ugly moment.”

A woman holds a microphone and speaks heatedly to a woman in a hijab who looks away from her.

What was supposed to be a celebratory dinner at a dean’s home for graduating UC Berkeley law students on Tuesday turned into an angry confrontation over the Israel-Hamas war, free speech and accusations of anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish hatred.

Several dozen law school students were invited to the Oakland home of School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and his wife, law school professor Catherine Fisk, for the first of three dinners they planned to host. The event, which took place in the couple’s backyard garden with white-cloth-covered tables and students seated among lemon trees, was to recognize the work of law students and provide an opportunity to enjoy casual time with the two prominent professors.

But the dinner quickly devolved after a Palestinian American law student who was invited stood up in front of guests and attempted to give a speech about Palestinians dying in Gaza and her desire for the university to divest from corporations involved in Israel’s war and its occupation and blockade of Palestinian lands.

Chemerinsky approached the student with his arms folded and shouted at her: “Please leave. No. Please leave. Please leave.” Fisk grabbed away the student’s microphone, while saying, “It is not your house. It is my house. And I want you to leave.”

The student who spoke, Malak Afaneh, said that Fisk assaulted her and that her free speech rights were denied.

Chemerinsky, who is Jewish, says that the incident is the latest in antisemitic attacks on him and that free speech does not extend to his home. The university, which has been embroiled in months of protests over the Israel-Hamas war, is standing behind the dean.

“I am appalled and deeply disturbed by what occurred at Dean Chemerinsky’s home last night,” UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ said in a statement. “I have been in touch with him to offer my support and sympathy. While our support for free speech is unwavering, we cannot condone using a social occasion at a person’s private residence as a platform for protest.”

Rich Lyons, former Berkeley business school dean and now chief innovation and entrepreneurship officer, will lead one of the nation’s top public universities.

In an interview, University of California President Michael Drake called the incident “very unfortunate.”

UC Board of Regents Chair Rich Leib said he condemned the student’s actions and called it “deplorable.... The individuals that targeted this event did so simply because it was hosted by a dean who is Jewish. These actions were antisemitic, threatening, and do not reflect the values of this university.”

The events were caught on multiple videos by pro-Palestinian activists who were present.

A video shows Afaneh, who was dressed in a jean skirt, a white “divest” shirt with a black-and-white keffiyeh around her neck and a red hijab, getting up from her table and standing in front of the seated guests. After offering the traditional Islamic greeting in Arabic and translating it to English as “peace and blessings upon you all,” she says, “Tonight we are gathered here in the name of commemorating our final few weeks as law students. Tonight is also the last night of the holy month of Ramadan where millions of Muslims around the world fast.”

“Please leave!” Chemerinsky says after the words “gathered here.” The video shows him standing several feet away from Afaneh as he shouts. “This is my house. You are my guest. You’re my guest. Please leave my house,” he says.

The protest started over the college’s dismantling of a piece of student-erected pro-Palestinian protest art on campus, which had been standing since March 28.

The clip then pans to Afaneh to show that Fisk has approached her from behind and grabbed Afaneh’s phone, from which she is reading a script, the microphone and Afaneh’s shirt. Fisk’s arm is on Afaneh’s right shoulder and at times appears to touch her neck.

“This is not your house! It is my house!” Fisk says. The video shows Fisk looking at another woman who is with the demonstrator and saying, “Get her to leave my house!”

An argument ensues among Afaneh, Chemerinsky, Fisk and the other woman, also a law student.

“You are not welcome,” Fisk says to Afaneh, suggesting she may call the police. Afaneh replies, “You can call the police.” Fisk says, “I don’t prefer to.” She then tries to take the microphone from Afaneh, who does not let go of her grip and is pulled a few steps up a small set of stairs.

“Forty thousand people are dying,” Afaneh says at one point to Fisk in the video, which is just under three minutes long.

“I can’t stop that,” Fisk says.

The video later shows Chemerinsky speaking to a different student, pleading for activists to leave. “There is a genocide going on,” a student tells him. “Then don’t come here!” Chemerinsky says.

Nine activists organized the protest as part of the law school’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter. They left shortly after the argument, according to both sides.

“We agree with you about what’s going on in Palestine,” Fisk says in a separate video as Afaneh and students leave.

“Then what have you done about divestment? Nothing. Nothing,” a different student says as she walks away.

“We don’t control the investment,” Fisk replies.

In an interview Wednesday, Afaneh said that she felt assaulted by Fisk and that she was considering filing charges, but would first consult with lawyers.

“The aggression with which she ran at me when I said ‘ as-salamu alaykum .’ She saw my hijab and keffiyeh, and that was a risk for her,” Afaneh said.

Fisk did not reply to an email seeking comment. Chemerinsky, a constitutional law expert, released a statement Wednesday and responded to a reporter’s questions.

“The house is privately owned by my wife and me. The mortgage is our names. It is on a street in Oakland. It is not owned by the university, on university property, or in any way paid for by the university,” Chemerinsky said in an interview with The Times. “It is private property, and the 1st Amendment simply does not apply there. No one has the right to come into my house, or yours, and disrupt a dinner. As a matter of constitutional law, this is absolutely clear.”

A divide over the Israel-Hamas war flares at UC Berkeley Law

A Wall Street Journal op-ed by professor Steven Davidoff Solomon recommended against hiring students who ‘support discriminatory bylaws or other acts and resolutions blaming Jews and Israelis for the Hamas massacre.’

Nov. 3, 2023

Chemerinsky has been a vocal critic of pro-Palestinian activists at Berkeley and a frequent target of their activity since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Chemerinsky said he is being singled out because he is Jewish.

“Last week, there was an awful poster, on social media and bulletin boards in the law school building, of a caricature of me holding a bloody knife and fork, with the words in large letters, ‘No dinner with Zionist Chem while Gaza starves,’” he said in the statement. “I never thought I would see such blatant antisemitism, with an image that invokes the horrible antisemitic trope of blood libel and that attacks me for no apparent reason other than I am Jewish.”

On Wednesday the group’s social media pages did not show blood on the knife and fork. Chemerinsky last week had sent The Times an image from the group’s Instagram account that did show a blood-stained knife and fork.

This is not the first conflict in recent months involving the law school. In the fall, a professor ignited controversy when he published an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal titled, “Don’t Hire My Anti-Semitic Law Students.” Students and alumni petitioned Chemerinsky to take action in response. Chemerinsky stood up for the professor, saying he was defending free speech even if people find it “deeply offensive.”

The dean said dinners scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday would continue.

“I hope that there will be no disruptions.... But we will have security present,” Chemerinsky said in the statement. “Any student who disrupts will be reported to student conduct and a violation of the student conduct code is reported to the bar.”

Trump says New York judge won’t let him attend son’s graduation, no ruling has been made

CLAIM: New York Judge Juan M. Merchan told former President Donald Trump on the first day of his hush money case that he can’t attend his son Barron’s May 17 high school graduation because he must be in court that day.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Merchan said on Monday that he was not prepared to rule on a request from Trump’s lawyers that court be adjourned on May 17 so that Trump can attend the ceremony . He said his decision will depend on how the trial proceeds.

THE FACTS: As he left court following the trial’s first day, Trump said of Merchan, “it looks like the judge will not let me go to the graduation of my son.” Moments later, he expressed displeasure because the trial made it so “that I can’t go to my son’s graduation” and a number of other events, including a U.S. Supreme Court hearing and campaign stops.

Trump then furthered his criticism of the judge on his Truth Social platform, writing in one post both that he “will likely not be allowed to attend” and that “the Judge, Juan Merchan, is preventing me from proudly attending my son’s Graduation.” He wrote in another post less than two hours later that he is “being prohibited from attending.”

Social media users quickly parroted Trump’s claims.

“Leftist NYC Judge won’t allow President Trump to attend Barron’s high school graduation,” reads one X post that had received approximately 20,000 likes and 9,900 shares as of Tuesday. “This is going to backfire huge. The American people are sick of this Marxist tyranny.”

A Facebook video with approximately 25,000 views similarly states: “I never thought I would disrespect a Judge but F**** Justice Juan M. Merchan. This man is the Devil! He said Trump is not allowed to go to his sons graduation.”

Some posts also said that Trump will be arrested if he attends the graduation anyway.

But Merchan has not yet ruled on the matter.

Trump’s lawyers requested on Monday that the trial not be held on May 17 so that the former president may be at the ceremony. A Trump lawyer also requested the trial not be held June 3 so that he can attend his own son’s graduation.

Merchan said he was not prepared to issue a decision on either request, but noted that if the trial proceeds as planned he’s willing to adjourn for one or both days. “It really depends on how we’re doing on time and where we are in the trial,” he said.

The judge will require Trump to attend court in New York next Thursday, while the Supreme Court will be hearing arguments about whether, as a former president, he is immune from prosecution in another of his four criminal cases. Trump is not required to be at the Supreme Court for the arguments.

Merchan read Trump his so-called “Parker warnings” on Monday, informing him that his right to be present at the trial could be revoked if he acted out and that he could be sent to jail for disruptive behavior. Trump said that he understood a warrant for his arrest will be issued if he deliberately fails to appear for the trial, according to a court transcript. This is standard criminal procedure law in New York.

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of a scheme to bury damaging stories that he feared could hurt his 2016 campaign, particularly as Trump’s reputation was suffering at the time from comments he had made about women .

The former president was back in court Tuesday for the second day of the trial.

Trump is facing charges in three other criminal cases, including two related to the 2020 election. He was ordered on Feb. 16 to pay $335 million in penalties in a civil case for a scheme to dupe banks, insurers and others by inflating his wealth on financial statements, a decision he is appealing. ___ This is part of the AP’s effort to address widely shared false and misleading information that is circulating online. Pennsylvania school district cancel's actor's speech over concerns of activism, 'lifestyle'

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — A Pennsylvania school district has canceled an upcoming appearance by actor and children’s book author Maulik Pancholy after district leaders cited concerns about what they described as his activism and “lifestyle.”

Pancholy, who is gay, was scheduled to speak against bullying during a May 22 assembly at Mountain View Middle School in Cumberland County. However, the district’s school board voted unanimously Monday night to cancel his talk after some members voiced their concerns and others noted the district’s policy about not hosting overtly political events, news outlets reported. The policy was enacted after the district was criticized for hosting a rally by Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign for president.

Pancholy, 48, is an award-winning actor, including for his roles on the television shows “30 Rock” and “Weeds,” and as the voice of Baljeet on the Disney animated series, “Phineas & Ferb.” He also has written children’s books and in 2014 was named by then-President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, where he co-founded a campaign to combat AAPI bullying.

Pancholy’s appearance was scheduled by the school’s leadership team, which each year schedules an author presentation as a “unique educational experience for students,” according to the district.

While discussing the appearance at Monday night’s meeting, school board members said they did not know what Pancholy’s talk would be about, but one member said he didn’t “want to run the risk” of what it might entail.

“If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist,” Bud Shaffner said, according to Pennlive. “He is proud of his lifestyle, and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students, at any age.”

The Associated Press sent an email message to Pancholy’s publicists Thursday afternoon.

The board’s vote sparked criticism from several parents, students and community members who called the decision “homophobic.” Some have started online petitions urging that Pancholy’s appearance be reinstated.

The president of Columbia University, Nemat Shafik, testified before the House Education Committee alongside a Columbia University law professor and two trustees.

A little déjà vu happened on the Hill on Wednesday.

The president of Columbia University testified about how the school has responded to antisemitic incidents on campus after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and Israel's military response in Gaza.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, Jewish students on college campuses have experienced a "stark increase" in antisemitic incidents following Oct. 7.

Wednesday's hearing was reminiscent of another antisemitism hearing , held in December, when House Education Committee members grilled the presidents of Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania. Two of those presidents ended up resigning, in part because of that hearing.

Lawmakers grill the presidents of Harvard, MIT and Penn over antisemitism on campus

Middle East crisis — explained

Lawmakers grill the presidents of harvard, mit and penn over antisemitism on campus.

But there were some stark differences between the hearings, including that the Columbia representatives agreed with lawmakers that antisemitism was a serious problem on campus.

"It is not tolerated and it is not acceptable," said Columbia President Nemat Shafik, "and over the last six months we have done everything we can and have worked tirelessly to improve our policies and our enforcement."

Shafik testified alongside a Columbia University law professor and two trustees.

When Suzanne Bonamici, a Democrat from Oregon, asked whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated Columbia's code of conduct, all four Columbia representatives provided a clear "Yes it does."

Their answer stands in contrast to the December hearing, during which the presidents of Harvard, Penn and MIT answered the same question in a legalistic way that was criticized for lacking moral clarity .

Many of the Columbia officials' answers acknowledged they have work to do. "You are right," Columbia trustee Claire Shipman responded to one lawmaker, "we have a moral crisis on our campus."

During the hearing, some lawmakers – including Tim Walberg, a Republican from Michigan, and Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York – pushed hard on specific incidents of Columbia professors who have made comments in support of Hamas.

They frequently interrupted the Columbia representatives to ask what disciplinary actions had been taken, and whether the professors were still teaching at Columbia. In response, the college leaders vowed to hold faculty members accountable for antisemitic speech.

Columbia's representatives said they had created a Task Force on Antisemitism. They said dozens of students have been disciplined and students who participated in unauthorized events have been suspended. Shafik repeatedly said that education was key, and she vowed to include lessons on antisemitism at orientations for new students.

Jacob Schmeltz, a senior at Columbia studying political science, and a co-vice president of the Jewish On Campus Student Union, watched Wednesday's hearing with fellow students.

"I'm really happy that they finally made a really clear statement that this is an issue and acknowledged just how difficult it has been for Jewish students over the last six months," he says.

He says he'll be looking to see if administrators follow through with the things they committed to in the hearing, like holding professors accountable and educating students about antisemitism. He hopes that kind of follow through will help improve the campus climate at Columbia, and elsewhere.

"This issue has completely consumed campus since Oct. 7," he says.

"I hope that we continue to center the experiences of Jewish students on these other campuses and continue to work to fight antisemitism all across the country."

Fallout from the December hearing

The December hearing with the presidents of Harvard, MIT and Penn saw high tension and headline-grabbing consequences. This was largely due to tough questioning from Stefanik, who refused to accept the presidents' vague, prepared answers.

Just days after the hearing, Penn President Elizabeth Magill stepped down .

Less than a month later, Harvard's president, Claudine Gay, resigned following accusations of plagiarism.

Stefanik celebrated the resignations, tweeting " Two down. One to go. "

MIT President Sally Kornbluth is still in her position.

"It's impossible to win a hearing"

Before the hearing, in a letter to the campus community , Shafik said she was prepared to "share what we have learned as we battle this ancient hatred at Columbia University."

Rep. Virginia Foxx, Republican chair of the committee, said in a press release that she called the hearing because, "Some of the worst cases of antisemitic assaults, harassment, and vandalism on campus have occurred at Columbia University."

"It's impossible to win a hearing, but it's easy to lose a hearing and end up on TV," said Christopher Armstrong, a lawyer at Holland & Knight who advises clients on how to respond to congressional investigations.

Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigns

Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigns

He said both lawmakers and the representatives from Columbia had the benefit of studying that December hearing and having ample time to prepare – and it showed.

"I thought the witnesses approached this hearing today in a very candid and sincere way. It was clear they recognize this is a very real challenge on campus and it's something colleges across the country are wrestling with."

Investigations into Columbia

Columbia is under investigation by the House Education Committee for "the inadequacy of Columbia's response to antisemitism on its campus," according to a letter the committee sent to the school.

At the end of Wednesday's hearing, Foxx left open the possibility that the committee would convene another hearing centered on Columbia. She told school officials, "We are prepared to bring you back if we don't see more tangible progress."

Columbia is also among a number of colleges under investigation by the U.S. Education Department regarding alleged civil rights violations in the wake of Oct 7.

Ahead of Wednesday's hearing, several Jewish faculty members at Columbia and its sister school, Barnard College, warned against the "weaponization" of antisemitism on college campuses. "And we advocate for a campus where all students, Jewish, Palestinian, and all others, can learn and thrive in a climate of open, honest inquiry and rigorous debate."

USC tensions high after Muslim valedictorian's speech canceled and Trump complains about jury selection: Morning Rundown

Uncertainty over how many hostages are still alive are complicating Gaza cease-fire negotiations, officials say. Donald Trump complains about jury selection as his hush money trial resumes. And accusations of sexual abuse are made against a teacher at an elite girls boarding school.

Here’s what to know today.

Uncertainty over how many hostages in Gaza are still alive

Hostage families outside Israel’s defense ministry.

More than six months after Hamas militants attacked Israel and seized more than 250 hostages, it remains unclear exactly how many of the captives are still alive in Gaza, according to U.S. and Israeli officials.

The uncertainty has caused anguish among the families of those held in Gaza and undermined international efforts to negotiate a cease-fire deal.

A proposed cease-fire plan calls for Hamas to free 40 hostages who aer women, children or sick and elderly men. In return, Israel could release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. But Hamas has been unable to confirm it has identified 40 hostages who meet those criteria, according to U.S., Israeli and Western officials.

This is Morning Rundown, a weekday newsletter to start your morning. Sign up here to get it in your inbox.

In November, more than 100 hostages were released as part of a four-day pause in the fighting in Gaza. Israel says more than 130 hostages remain, but far fewer hostages may be alive than is publicly known, and it is difficult to say for certain, U.S. officials said. Asked whether there was a firm estimate of how many hostages remained alive, a former senior Israeli official said, “Not at all.”

The unknowns, officials said, are bogging down cease-fire negotiations. And loved ones hoping to be reunited with their family are stuck waiting for answers.

  • Qatar is re-evaluating its role as mediator in cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas, citing concerns that its efforts are being undermined by politicians seeking to score points, its prime minister said.
  • The University of Southern California’s decision to cancel a Muslim valedictorian’s commencement address has further inflamed tensions on campus.
  • Columbia University’s president strongly denounced antisemitism and faced questions about her handling of antisemitism on campus at a congressional hearing that was, at times, heated.

Trump hush money trial resumes with jury selection

Jury selection in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial picks back up after a day off. Seven jurors have already been selected, and Judge Juan Merchan hopes to select five more jurors and six alternates by the end of the week. Today, another pool of 96 potential jurors will face questioning to see whether they can be fair and impartial about Trump. This time around, each side will have less opportunity to dismiss potential jurors because both used six of their 10 peremptory challenges earlier this week.

Trump used the scheduled day off  to bemoan the number of challenges he can make going forward and suggested incorrectly that he should be entitled to unlimited strikes of potential jurors in the case. Under New York law, each side does have an unlimited number of strikes “for cause,” but the judge presiding over the case can decide whether or not that cause is worthy of a strike.

Man on terror watchlist was dropped by migrant monitoring program

When an Afghan national on the FBI terrorist watchlist was arrested last week after having spent nearly a year in the U.S., immigration officials said he had been enrolled in a program that tracked his location via ankle monitor, mobile app or telephone. But the man’s participation in the monitoring program, known as Alternatives to Detention, lasted only a little over two weeks. Mohammad Kharwin is believed to have then spent 10 months in the U.S. without any kind of monitoring system.

Now, experts say the case raises questions about how migrants who may pose a security threat are vetted and tracked in the U.S. It also raises questions about the monitoring program, which has seen funding cuts from Republicans in Congress who oppose it, forcing ICE to drop migrants from being monitored.

Homeland security correspondent Julia Ainsley, who broke the story last week, explains the latest developments .

Johnson eyes a weekend vote on foreign aid bills

House Speaker Mike Johnson rolled out three bills to provide assistance to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, with the hopes of holding final votes Saturday. The bills will be a major test for Johnson, as he faces a deeply divided GOP and serious threats to his leadership from two right-wing representatives.

The biggest sticking point will be funding for Ukraine. Already, several Republicans have said they will not approve any more aid for Kyiv. In order for that funding to pass, a significant share of Democrats will be required to carry that measure over the finish line.

Also expected to come up this weekend through an amendment process is the House-passed bill to ban TikTok in the U.S. unless the company divests from its China-based owner. Meanwhile, House Democrats want Johnson to consider a Senate-passed foreign aid package instead, saying it’s the best path to getting a bill on President Joe Biden’s desk. Here’s what else to know.

Vince McMahon’s life after the WWE scandal

It’s been almost three months since billionaire Vince McMahon resigned as the chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment’s parent company after a former employee accused him in a bombshell lawsuit of sexual abuse and trafficking. McMahon, 78, has denied the allegations. He’s also facing a federal criminal investigation but he hasn’t been charged.

However, the mountain of legal woes hasn’t stopped him from traveling internationally, eating out, visiting his barber, working out and keeping up with friends and associates, including former President Donald Trump. NBC News and CNBC spoke to 11 people familiar with McMahon and WWE about how McMahon has been spending his time.

It’s as if McMahon is unfazed by his legal fights, two people said.

Meanwhile, the global brand McMahon built is moving on without him. Read the exclusive story here.

Shortage of Zepbound weight loss drug has no end in sight

Despite Eli Lilly’s assurances that it had an adequate supply of Zepbound, its new weight loss drug, the company is facing shortages just months after its approval. It has been blaming the shortage on a large demand for the drug, saying it can’t make enough to meet everyone’s needs. The drug went into shortage this month, not long after CEO Dave Ricks said that the supply of the drug wasn’t a concern.

The FDA approved Zepbound in November, as a new competitor to Wegovy, Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster weight loss drug. While the drugmaker is working to resolve the issue,  a quick fix is unlikely . Some of the steps that Eli Lilly is planning to tackle demand, like building a new plant, will take months.

Teacher at New England boarding school accused of preying on female students

Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Mass.

A veteran teacher at an upper-crust Massachusetts boarding and day school for girls has resigned amid allegations that he groomed several students for sex during the 30-plus years he taught at Miss Hall’s School.

Matthew Rutledge, 62, who mainly taught history, was placed on administrative leave and resigned days later after a former student came forward and reported him to the school administration for allegedly sexually abusing and exploiting her when she was a student and after she graduated, according to a letter the school sent to alumni April 3. Since then, two other women have come forward with claims that Rutledge also preyed on them, one of their attorneys said.
