Lean Supply Chain Management: a lean approach applied to distribution – a literature review of the concepts, challenges and trends
Developed between 1948 and 1975, the Toyota Production System (TPS) has in its essence increasing profitability through the elimination of losses. The TPS continued to evolve, becoming better known as just-in-time (JIT) production and, in the sequence, as lean production or lean thinking. In this line, the lean philosophy and its concepts were extended to manufacturing industries over the years. However, up to the present, the challenge for many companies lies in how to reduce the gap in the application of these concepts to their distribution operations process. The distribution operation is responsible for the success of customer services and, at the same time, it works under intense pressure to reduce costs and inventory, keeping the high service level. It will take a separate time for preparing the methodology for the each industry. In order to reduce the time taken for the preparation of a new methodology each time, we are going to prepare a generalized methodology for the implementation of lean concepts. In a highly competitive environment, cost reduction and optimization of the supply chain are more than ever a strategic issue for companies. In this sense, lean manufacturing is a lever that allows the company to continuously reduce the time required for the transformation of raw materials into finished products, eliminating waste and with the aim to meet the growing and diverse needs of these customers.In this paper, it based on the latest studies in this field in order to highlight the relationship between supply chain and lean manufacturing at reducing costs, eliminating waste and non-value added. Then it highlights the impact of lean manufacturing on the reactivity of the supply chain through inventory reduction, cycle time and flow acceleration. Finally, it presents the role and expectations of the supplier in the context of the merger Lean Manufacturing and Supply Chain.This research has enabled to understand the impact of lean manufacturing concepts on supply chain strategies.

Purpose – The study aims to report a case study in a Thai Electronics Manufacturing deploying a lean manufacturing approach, and to discuss the value gained in their supply chain operations. These experiences can be adapted by others for design, redesign, and problem shooting when analyzing the performance of supply chain operations. Approach – The paper is based on actual activities in a case study. This paper begins by reviewing the relevant literature on supply chain operations and supply chain uncertainty, and then reviews lean manufacturing implementation. The literature review helps to validate the case study, which is a challenge of high mix, low volume and unstable demand manufacturing. The paper also describes two major techniques, continuous improvement and Kaizen activities, and then focuses on the seven types of waste. Sectors associated with the distribution of products and goods have become more and more important in recent years. Globalisation and changing market demands are increasing competitiveness in these sectors, and as a result many companies have adopted new improvement methods to assure their survival. The adoption of improvement philosophies and a lean culture offer new opportunities to improve the quality and service of distribution networks and activities related with transport and warehousing. The application of these philosophies, widely used in industrial companies, has been little documented in distribution centres. However, these methods are difficult to implement in companies from the distribution sector due to the volatility of customer demand, the high degree of human participation and the demanding mechanical and repetitive activities in retail and storage activities. This paper presents a methodology for change management to adopt lean practices in distribution centres. The presented case study has been used to develop, test and refine the methodology. Results show that the methodology was suitable for establishing a lean culture in the company and it resulted in good outcomes in terms of productivity, employee attitudes and participation.

Lean practices are meant to reduce the unwanted activities from a system and use only as much resources as are necessary for that matter. In today's world, the manufacturing organisations are trying tooth and nail to get an edge over their competitors. This makes them obligatory to improve their production process which in turn requires a very effective and efficient supply chain system. It has made the researchers focus on this area of manufacturing and add some valuable contributions towards the betterment of manufacturing industry and the society as a whole. Review papers provide a great help to researchers in identifying the areas that need improvement and avoid redundancy of the efforts. Although a wide range of researches has been done on lean and supply chain separately, the integrated view of lean and supply chain is still suffering to receive the attention of a large stream of researchers. In the same context, to help researchers, this paper tries to identify the important researches and also find some key aspects that need to be explored. As, to the knowledge of the researchers, there are no review papers on lean supply chain till now, this paper assumes a greater relevance. The literature on the lean supply chain is exhaustively covered under the limitations of the resources, is classified on the bases of year, country, industry and journal and discussed lucidly followed by findings and conclusion. The literature identifies three phases of researches and highlights future research avenues.

This chapter evaluates the state-of-the-art of research on Lean Management and Supply Chain Management strategies in the aerospace sector using Systematic Literature Review methodology. The complementary aims are: a) to identify the topic set studied and to propose a criterion for classifying the literature, and b) to discuss the empirical evidence that identifies existing interrelationships. The analysis has enabled three main topics to be identified: a) adoption and implementation of lean management, b) development of supply chain management, and c) deployment of lean principles and practices across the supply chain.
