Hi, Office Insiders. My name is Rolly Seth, and I’m a Program Manager on the Office Graphics team. I’m happy to share with you that you can now add Flipgrid videos and Flipgrid shorts to your PowerPoint presentations on both the Windows and Mac platforms, as well as in PowerPoint for the web.

Flipgrid videos in PowerPoint

Flipgrid is a free and accessible short-form video discussion tool for educators, learners, and families. It offers powerful, creative tools that make it easy to engage with your community, including fun stickers, expressive frames, and a colorful camera and lenses.

We’ve now made it easy to add Flipgrid videos to enhance and enrich your PowerPoint presentations!

How it works

Here are the steps for integrating Flipgrid videos into your PowerPoint presentations:

• In Windows, select Video > Online Videos .
• In Mac, select Video > Online Movie .

• Click the Insert button to place the Flipgrid video on your slide.

Scenarios to try

As with other supported online video formats in PowerPoint, you can move, resize, and customize the Flipgrid video layout inside the slide.

Known issues

Video Preview might not be available when you paste the Flipgrid URL into the dialog box, but you can still insert and play the Flipgrid video. We are working to address this issue.

Requirements

Note that only Flipgrid standard videos and Flipgrid shorts are currently supported in PowerPoint.

This feature is available to Office Insiders running these Beta Channel builds:

• Windows: Version 2107 (Build 14221.20000) or later
• Mac: Version 16.51 (Build 21071101) or later

How to Use Flipgrid to Make Screencast Videos

As I do every year, I’m taking this week off from writing new blog posts. This week I’ll be re-running a few of the most popular posts in 2020. 

As I demonstrate in the following video you can combine screencast videos with regular webcam video clips in Flipgrid . You can also combine screencast videos with whiteboard videos in Flipgrid. And you can combine all three video types into one video in Flipgrid. Best of all, you don’t have to install any browser extensions or download anything in order to use Flipgrid’s screen recording tool! Watch my video to see how this is done.

Applications for Education As soon as I saw this feature I thought of an old colleague of mine who used to have her students create screencast videos to explain how various pieces of software on their laptops worked. She used to have to then organize those videos in a Google Drive folder. Now that same thing can be done in Flipgrid. The other nice thing about Flipgrid’s new screen recording function is that you don’t have to install any browser extensions or download any software.

Add Flipgrid Videos In PowerPoint With These Three Simple Steps

According to Microsoft, Office has over 1.2 billion global users , with 60 million active Office 365 commercial customers. This means millions of global businesses rely on Microsoft Office applications to facilitate their operations. Some of these applications include Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Microsoft PowerPoint is among the most used applications to create presentations, including video presentations.

PowerPoint supports YouTube, SlideShare, and Stream online video services, allowing users to create videos from these platforms using Microsoft PowerPoint. Microsoft’s Flipgrid joins other supported video services, a video tool designed for teachers to create and share videos with their students. In this post, we’ll provide insights into Microsoft Flipgrid videos with PowerPoint and how to add your Flipgrid videos in PowerPoint.

What Is Flipgrid?

Flipgrid is an educational video tool intended for teachers and students to extend classroom discussions outside a physical teaching space. It allows teachers to record a prompt video, and students to respond with short videos of between fifteen seconds and five minutes. Teachers and students can use Flipgrid on any computer with Mac or Windows operating systems. Flipgrid is also compatible with PowerPoint for the web, allowing users to access the platform on any web browser.

Since PowerPoint now supports Flipgrid, users can add Flipgrid videos and shorts to PowerPoint presentations, including PowerPoint for the web. As a free and short video platform, Flipgrid is a powerful and creative way to interact with a large community besides schoolwork. The software features expressive frames, exciting stickers, and colorful cameras and lenses.

Microsoft’s Flipgrid also includes rich media, including options to draw, text, and insert emojis. However, users will require PowerPoint for Windows v 2104 build 13906.20000 or later to support Flipgrid. The new Office build is also available for Windows Beta Channel and provides extra fixes to Word and Excel. Mac users running these Beta Channels will be able to add Flipgrid videos to PowerPoint if they use Version 16.51 (Build 21071101) or later, while Windows users should have Version 2107 (Build 14221.2000) or later.

How to Add Flipgrid Videos in PowerPoint Slides

PowerPoint offers an easy way to create and insert videos into slides for a presentation. Like YouTube, Stream, and SlideShare, users can add Flipgrid videos and shorts in PowerPoint seamlessly. That said, here are three easy steps for integrating Flipgrid videos and shorts into PowerPoint presentations.

Step 1: Copy the Share URL

The first step for integrating Flipgrid videos in PowerPoint is copying the share URL of the video from Flipgrid and pasting it on the PowerPoint Insert tab. On the Flipgrid platform, access your educator account and navigate to the Discussions page. Select a topic and scroll down to find a list of videos on your Flipgrid account. If you are using a computer, select the Share button to share the video. If it is a mobile device, select Actions and then Share . This will display a share link, which you will copy and share the URL with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Step 2: Open Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint allows users to insert online videos from different sites, including YouTube and now Flipgrid. However, it should be noted that videos inserted into PowerPoint play directly from the source website and include the site’s functions such as play, volume, pause, and so on. Hence, PowerPoint playback controls such as Trim and Fade do not apply to online videos.

To access the Insert tab in your PowerPoint app, you need to navigate through specific options. However, the steps vary depending on the operating system and the PowerPoint software you are running. If you are a Windows user, select Video on your PowerPoint app and navigate to Online Video to access the Insert tab. For Mac users, the tab is accessed by selecting Video and then tapping on Online Movie on Microsoft PowerPoint. Suppose you are using PowerPoint for the web, click Online Video to open the Insert tab.

Step 3: Paste the Share URL to The Insert Tap

To add a Flipgrid video to your PowerPoint presentation, paste the copied share URL from Flipgrid to the Insert tab on PowerPoint. Pasting the share URL on the dialog box allows you to share the video to PowerPoint. Once you have pasted the share URL on the dialog box, click Insert to place your Flipgrid video on the slide.

Things to Remember

Since Flipgrid videos and shorts are now supported in PowerPoint presentations, using the above steps enables you to add your Flipgrid video seamlessly and quickly to your slides. However, it would be best to keep the following aspects in mind once your video is added to PowerPoint.

• Some PowerPoint Options work on Flipgrid videos : Although most PowerPoint controls are disabled on Flipgrid online videos and shorts, users can move, customize and resize layouts within the slide. This is the same feature used in other supported online video formats.
• Video preview is unavailable on the Insert tab : You will not get a video preview once you place the Flipgrid URL on the Insert tab. However, users can preview the video after adding it to PowerPoint.
• Only Flipgrid standard videos and shorts are supported : Whether you are using a Mac, Windows, or PowerPoint for the web, only Flipgrid standard videos and shorts are supported. This applies to all users, including those running on Beta Channels.
• You can submit feedback : Microsoft allows users to provide feedback or suggestions using Microsoft Flipgrid videos with PowerPoint. Mac users can send a Smile emoji or Frown emoji to show how satisfied they are with the service. Select Help and navigate to Feedback to submit your feedback or suggestion if you are a Windows user.

How to Create an Engaging FlipGrid Presentation: Roundtable Recording

On January 12, 2021, members of the SSWCA board presented ideas for how directors and tutors can create a pre-recorded video presentation for FlipGrid that is engaging to a wide audience. Saving your Video on FlipGrid Suggestions:

• When you save your video, the most prominent aspect viewers will see is the “ first name ,” however, we recommend that you use that space for a brief description of your video to hook viewers . Consider a concise way to “hook” conference attendees into watching your video. Be honest and professional, but use this space to attract viewers.
• For “last name,” you can put your school’s name so people can more easily find your school if they choose.
• Use the “title” space for your actual project title.
• Instead of a selfie, consider using your center’s logo or create your own logo. This will appear more professional and could attract a wider audience than simply someone’s face that the audience doesn’t know.

*Final thought: It might be time for you to create a “professional” online presence. Rather than share a personal email, social media account, or school email (that may not be valid a few months from now), consider how sharing in your presentation a separate, professional social media account can be beneficial as you look towards graduation and establishing yourself professionally.

A Complete Guide to Using Flipgrid – 12 Tutorial Videos #Flipgridfever

Flipgrid is a fantastic tool for gathering feedback from students in the form of short videos. In this post you’ll learn everything you need to know to use Flipgrid in your classroom.

Introduction:

On Flipgrid you can post a prompt for your students and they reply with short videos that can be as short as fifteen seconds or as long as five minutes. As the teacher you set the maximum length for the videos that your students can submit. To make a video submission your students either record directly within Flipgrid by using their webcams or upload a video to Flipgrid from their computers, phones, or tablets.

How are teachers using Flipgrid?

Teachers across all grade levels and content areas are using Flipgrid as a digital exit ticket at the end of the week, to extend classroom discussions beyond the time of physical class meeting, and to connect students in different parts of the world through a program called #GridPals. Those are just a few of the common ways that Flipgrid is used. Here are some other interesting ways that teachers use Flipgrid:

• To have students explain how to solve a math problem.
• To have expert speakers share knowledge with students.
• To listen to choir and band students practice performance pieces.
• To have physical education students show proper form for push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups.
• To record short puppet shows.
• To document the steps of a science lab procedure.
• To share encouraging words with classmates who are absent due to extended illnesses.

What technology is required to use Flipgrid?

Teachers need to use Flipgrid on a Chromebook, Mac, or Windows computer to create Flipgrid Grids and Topics. (Think of Grids as a virtual classroom and Topics as individual prompts. You can have as many Topics as you like within a Grid).

Students can use Flipgrid on a Chromebook, Mac, or Windows computer. Students can also use Flipgrid through the Flipgrid Android app or the Flipgrid iOS (iPad) app . There is also a Flipgrid Windows 10 app that Surface users will appreciate.  

First Steps With Flipgrid

The first step is to sign-up as an educator on Flipgrid.com. You can sign-up by using a Microsoft account or by using a Google account.

Once you have registered as an educator you can create your first Flipgrid Grid. An easy way to think of a Grid is to think of it as a virtual classroom. The Grid is where students will go to see all of the Topics (AKA prompts) that you post for them to respond to. When you create your grid you can restrict access to it according to one of the following methods:

• Email domain. In this case only those who have an email issued by your school can see the Grid.
• Access via student IDs that you create. This is the option to choose if your students do not have active email addresses issued by your school.
• Access for anyone who has a Google or Microsoft account. This is the option to choose if you are using Flipgrid with college students or in a professional development group.

After you have created your first Grid you will see that it has been assigned a Flipgrid code/ Flipgrid URL. Give that code or URL to your students so that they can see the Topics within the Grid. When students go to the Grid they will be able to select any active topic to record and submit their responses.

Whenever you create a Flipgrid Grid there is default Topic titled “Let’s Connect!” that is activated. This topic is there for students to introduce themselves to the class. You can create more topics by simply clicking “New Topic” within your Grid. You can write any prompt that you want to give to your students in the new Topic description. You can also add a video or upload a document to use as a part of the new Topic for students to view and reply to. Every Topic within a Grid has its own code or URL that you can direct students to if you want to save them the step of first going to the Grid and then choosing the Topic.

I created this video to provide a complete walk-through of the process of creating a new Flipgrid Grid and Topic. The video also includes a demonstration of how students reply to your Topics.

How Students Reply to Flipgrid Topics

Students can reply to Flipgrid Topics on just about any device that has a camera built into it. This includes iPads, Android tablets, phones, Chromebooks, Windows computers, and Mac computers.

If you give your students the direct code/ URL for a Topic they will be sent directly there instead of to your Grid. If you give your students just the Grid code/ URL they will have to choose the topic to which they want to respond. Either way, they will have to sign-in before they can reply. And if you have password-protected your Grid, they’ll need to enter the password too.

Students Can Upload Replies to Topics

Recording a video with their webcams isn’t the only way that students can respond to a Flipgrid Topic. They can upload videos as long as those videos fall under the time limit that you have set for a topic. This video shows students how to respond to a Flipgrid Topic by uploading a video.

How to Create a Custom Flipgrid Code

You don’t have to use the codes that Flipgrid randomly assigns to your Grids. You create your own code in the set-up process. During the set-up simply write over the randomly-assigned code before you exit the set-up screen. Watch this video to learn how to create a custom Flipgrid code.

Create Student IDs in Bulk by Using a Spreadsheet

If your students don’t have email addresses, you will have to assign Flipgrid IDs to them. You can do this by manually entering names, picking IDs, and assigning passwords. But you can save time by uploading a student roster in spreadsheet form to assign IDs and passwords to your students. I created this video to show you how to create Flipgrid IDs in bulk.

Other Ways to Share Flipgrid Topics and Responses

It is possible to embed Flipgrid Grids, Topics, and Responses into other sites and blogs. In this video I demonstrate how to embed a Flipgrid Topic into a blog post.

Flipgrid Topics can be embedded into pages within Google Sites as I demonstrated in this video .

Use Flipgrid to Publish Instructional Videos

Flipgrid can be used for more than just posting prompts for students to respond to. You can use to publish a series of instructional videos for your students to watch and reply to with clarifying questions. That’s exactly what I demonstrated in this video.

Create a Mixtape of Flipgrid Responses

Flipgrid lets teachers select their favorite Topic responses and publish them in one place called a Flipgrid Mixtape. Selections for the Mixtape can come from multiple Topics. That means that teachers could create a Mixtape that has highlights from September through June to show student growth over the year. Watch this video to learn how to make a Flipgrid Mixtape.

Invite Parents to Watch and or Participate in Topics

Flipgrid has a neat feature called Guest Mode that lets you give parents access to a specific Topic without giving them access to an entire Grid. You can grant guest access so that parents can view videos or you can grant access so that parents can actually reply to a Topic. Watch this video to learn how to enable Guest Mode on a Topic.

Thoughts About Flipgrid Stickers

If you have watch the set-up videos and made it this far, you have seen the sticker option in Flipgrid. The stickers that students can apply to their video covers can be a distraction or an incentive depending upon how you and your students view them. Students love the stickers! If your students have some self-control, leave the sticker feature turned on. If your students lack that self-control, only enable stickers as an incentive or reward. I have a few more thoughts about the stickers in this video .

Flipgrid now supported in PowerPoint

Flipgrid now joins YouTube, Vimeo, Stream and SlideShare as supported services for PowerPoint online videos.

Microsoft’s Flipgrid is an education service for teachers to record videos to share with a class. Students can respond with their own recorded video segments.  Drawing, text, emoji and other rich media are available for the videos.

At present, PowerPoint 365 for Mac only supports YouTube, Vimeo, Stream and SlideShare.
