Research overview

We offer high-quality doctoral training to postgraduate students who wish to pursue an MPhil or PhD. As a research student, you’ll work closely with two allocated supervisors who will assist you in planning, executing and presenting your research. We encourage applications in any topic related to English studies.

The School of English offers research opportunities across a variety of topics related to English studies and draws on the resources of Nottingham’s renowned Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics. This is an interdisciplinary research centre devoted to describing and understanding language as it is acquired and used in the real world. Research expertise within the school includes 19th-century literature and post-colonial studies along with American, British, Indian, South-East Asian and Malaysian literatures. Creative writing, grammar, gothic literature, the fairy tale, literary theory, gender, identity, discourse analysis, World Englishes, grammatical analysis, interactional linguistics, sociolinguistics, publishing studies and systemic functional linguistics are also included in the course programme. Why choose this programme? 

You will cover the range of theoretical approaches making up the contemporary critical terminology of English and English studies. The course will also develop your awareness of practices in language use and their application to various contexts. The course will focus on developing your ability to engage in critical evaluations of current research along with developing your ability to problem-solve in respect of real-world projects and case studies.

Our global footprint allows you to draw on the supervisory expertise of over 80 staff specialising in numerous fields of English studies across our three campuses. Located in the UK, Malaysia and China, students are encouraged to spend a period of time at any or all of our campuses worldwide.

Entry requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2024 entry.

A good master’s degree (usually merit or higher) plus, an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

PhD in English Language Studies

The Ph.D of Human Science in English Language Studies programme aims to develop professionals in fields ranging from education, public service, consultancy, academic and related services. Another of its objectives is to produce skilled personnel with excellent grasp of the English language, instilling in them knowledge of rhetorical and linguistic skills to conduct research and produce academic and professional materials in the field. 

Programme Description

The programme normally requires three years of full time study or five years on a part time basis. Students in this programme are engaged in in-depth study of the linguistic aspects of the English language. Students have a choice of selecting the ‘coursework and thesis’ or ‘thesis only’ programme. This programme trains  students to become independent researchers in the future.

Course Structure

This Ph.D programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted Ph.D status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.

Ph.D candidates’ theses must not exceed 100,000 words. They are required to complete their studies within 12 semesters.

The Postcolonial Literature in English Programme at the Centre for Research in Language and Linguistics is anchored in new and dynamic paradigms intricately blending the study of Malaysian and other New Literature in English along with established Western literary texts The programme especially encourages students and scholars of literature to challenge existing euro-centric theoretical parameters of reading and literary criticism and to engage in the creation of theories and approaches that imbibe and centre Asian aesthetics. The programme prides itself on its diverse capacity in both the teaching of and research into literary studies. The master’s degree offers a range of courses that will provide graduate students with the opportunity to learn and master a variety of critical theories, issues, and approaches in the discipline of literature. At the PhD and MPhil levels, candidates will have the option to pursue one of the many research areas or interests that the academic staff is well versed in. The research areas include (but are not limited to): the postcolonial condition (experience of colonization and its effects), nationhood, multi-ethnic communal engagements, gender relations, social issues in everyday relations, popular culture, revisionism, religion, ideology and identity. The programme also ensures that its scope and vision remain relevant and forward looking in the 21st century digital era by continuously upgrading its courses’ contents and teaching approaches. Special emphasis is therefore paid to the interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the relation between literature and new media. By doing so, the programme hopes to produce graduates who will be able to address the critical issues in the current and future modern world.

Basic qualifications for Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a higher education provider that is recognised by the UKM Senate and the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia, with a CGPA of 3.0 and above for Master of Arts and 3.65 and above for Master of Philosophy. Lower CGPAs will be considered if the applicant possesses work experience. A Diploma will be considered if the applicant has at least 5 years of work experience.
  • English Language requirements: MUET Band 4, or TOEFL 550, or IELTS 6.5 or any other English Language qualification that is endorsed by the UKM Senate for international candidates.

Basic qualifications for Doctor of Philosophy:

  • A Master’s degree (preferably in a related field) from a higher education provider that is recognised by the UKM Senate and the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language) requirement

International candidates are required to enrol in two courses of Bahasa Melayu (2 units each) as determined by the University. An exemption can be granted to candidates who can produce proof of enrolment in an equivalent Bahasa Melayu course organised by other bodies that are recognised by UKM.

Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant who wishes to follow a programme and/or write their dissertation in the English Language but whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English Language must possess:

  • A minimum score of 550 for a paper-based total, a score of 213 for a computer-based total, or a score of 80 for an internet-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
  • At least a band 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(ACADEMIC); or
  • A score of 50 and above for the Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE)

A non-Malaysian applicant pursuing a programme of study and/or writing a dissertation in a language other than English Language, that is, Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic, which is related to his/her field of research prior to graduation is required to obtain:

PhD (English Language & Literature Studies) -  School of Humanities

This field of study is to promote the study of the production, distribution and reception of texts, of their linguistic, rhetorical and literary structures and functions, and of internal and external forces that create literature in English Language. The programme aims to fulfil the needs of graduates who are interested in furthering their studies in Linguistics and English Language Studies.

The programme prepares students for entrance into the profession as both teachers and scholars.

Candidates who join this programme have the option of choosing part-time or full-time status to suit their personal and work schedule.

Expertise available in the following School: School of Humanities

Applicants should possess one of the following:

  • A Master's degree in research mode; or
  • A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 3.00/4; or
  • A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 2.50-2.99/4 with additional requirements; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area with minimum CGPA 3.67/4 (fast-track to PhD)

(Applicable for International Applicants Only)

The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

  • A minimum of Band 6 for IELTS; or
  • A minimum score of 60 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • A minimum of Band 8.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
  • A minimum score of 250 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 169; or
  • A minimum score of 59 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
  • A minimum of Band 109 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
  • A minimum of Band 4 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Exemption is given to candidate if:

  • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
  • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
  • Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
  • Part-time: Min 6 semesters /Max 15 semesters
