Satchel - Providing a learning platform for teachers, students and parents

Satchel Newsroom

Satchel enhance market-leading homework software, show my homework, adding six new features in a single term.

Satchel’s flagship homework and distance learning app was adapted throughout the autumn/winter term to bring teachers and students an even more adaptable platform during the pandemic.

The updates give teachers more integrations with popular edtech platforms, better insights into students’ performance and closer communication with pupils around classwork and homework discussion.

The app saw six new major features added to improve overall usability during a time where students are learning both in the classroom and from home.

The updates added were:

Homework Discussion - Giving students and teachers a clearer line of communication over homework

Quizlet & GCSEPod integrations - The ability to share micro-lessons and modules from two leading education platforms via Satchel One

Send to Google and Teams - Integrations with Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom make sharing work and video lessons easier

Insights - Teachers can view insights on Quizzes, Flexible Tasks and Classwork to see how students and parents are engaging with them

Individual Homework - The ability to assign tasks to specific students within a class, instead of the class as a whole

Single-attempt Quizzes - For teachers who want to give their students a little more of a challenge and identify knowledge gaps faster during catch-up learning

These new features come as Satchel continues to work closely with secondary schools in the UK to create useful new tools that serve teachers and students during testing times.

Product Manager, Ryan Baylis, said, "As our flagship app, Show My Homework needs to work for all schools. Our customers find that we listen to their pain points and work with them to build a platform that works better for them and their school stakeholders. These new features are just some of the improvements we made in 2020 to ensure that teachers' lives are made that little bit easier."

Used to be better

I like most people use my phone for most things and that includes looking at assignments. On the old app this was perfectly fine and you could look back on all the assignments you had in the past which is really helpful if you missed something from ages ago that wasn’t super important so you don’t catch up on it right away. However now in a recent ish update the only way you can view tasks from a long time ago or not immediately due within the next two weeks is by going onto a computer and logging into satchel through there. This is incredibly irritating if you have a huge project with a due date months away because you then can’t quickly remind yourself about the details of the task the teacher has set you have to log onto a computer and look through there. This wouldn’t be so irritating if they didn’t change it from being perfectly good to now this system of only seeing tasks a few weeks ahead or behind on the app, i simply cannot understand why they would make this change. Why would you remove features from your app. Furthermore because of this two week period if you have overdue tasks for more than this timeframe they also disappear so then you don’t know what you’re behind on because it checks itself off after a certain period of time. Very irritating for long time users who know how good it used to be.

Needs more options and more controls

I have a number of frustrations with Satchel One including that you have no comments or ideas page on your website Below are options/improvements I would like to see in the software: - Options with type and frequency of notifications, eg when something is due and hasn’t been completed - but not getting notifications for when an item is set, or notifications when it is classwork as opposed to homework. - A better completed button for students to mark items -rather than just hiding items. - Option for students to have a separate feed for classwork items - More options to set personal reminders or task/project milestones - Ability to colourise or set notifications on items - Alternate ways to sort and filter items - Option to load work against a task - even if the teacher doesn’t want it submitted online - Option for student to give permission to a parent to mark an item as completed and assist with the upkeep and maintenance of their Satchel One account - Filters for subject and searching them, both completed and outstanding tasks

I’m afraid to say that my wife and I really do not like this. We are unable to see what work our child has done and what content they have put in. Our child spilt water over there laptop so now attends the school hub to do there online homework. All we know is that they say it’s completed. What it was and how they achieved this we don’t know. The feedback from teachers is very hit n miss. We think that there is nothing that can compete with a homework diary that has to be signed each week by the parents to say the child has completed there homework , further more the home work is set , the child completed each subject showing the parents there effort and allowing the parents to help where possibly needed. This whole pandemic has really effected children with there effort but also the teachers as well.... the children apply less effort and the teachers don’t have to mark papers, thus meaning if the child hasn’t done the homework online then hey ho they haven’t done it....our child is probably like a lot of children if there’s a loop hole they will exploit it...and the loop hole is ....as parents we gave no way of knowing what they have done what content and effort they put in and what mark or comments from the teacher they received. Sorry just do not agree with it.... exercise book pen and paper is always better .

Holland park school - please share the latest.

JustaDad12345 · 03/02/2023 04:02

Greetings, my son is year 8 in Kew House School. It’s a perfectly nice place, except: it’s not very demanding academically and it’s fairly far from us. Suddenly we got an email that they have a place for him in Holland Park - we applied previously. So - how are things there? Obviously “free” would be a nice feature, and it’s much closer to us, but how is the school academically these days? Would it be materially better than Kew House? How is the environment? Is all the drama over? Please share what you can. Thanks!

Hi, I asked about HP a few months ago: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4639440-holland-park-school-any-updates Good luck and please let us know how things go if you decided to take on the offer.

Yeah, thank you, I saw that thread from September of last year. These days for Holland Park School 4 months is an eternity :-)

Hi @JustaDad12345 , what did you decide in the end?

We decided to wait till September. I am surprised nobody here has any opinions though.

Hi! My daughter (year 10) and son (year 8) goes here and they absolutely love it! From what I’ve seen at parents evening (and at the open days) it’s got top of the line facilities not typical of a “state comprehensive”. In terms of academic standards, the school has always been high performing, more so at Sixth Form (it consistently scores on the top 100 London schools for A Level results). According to my son, lessons are constantly creative (with “inspire and enthuse” programmes) and homework is set at rather a demanding rate. (I should also advise you that the school has a particularly strong Arts and Humanities department, nobody from any of my children’s classes got below an 8/A* for their mocks!) Nobody here at HPS shies away from talking about last year’s drama, though it has had little impact on the quality of education and disciplinary standards (the main change that came about as a result was limited to the senior team). As far as non-religious, state-funded, fully comprehensive education goes, Holland Park School is definitely on the stronger end of the academic spectrum.

Would anyone know about the new head (Steve Parsons) departure? Is this true? I cant find info on their website....

So is it part of United Learning academy trust? If so, they took over Cambridge’s Parkside Fed schools. It’s been pretty bad and lots of parents very unhappy esp at the Coleridge School site. Very uber focused on uniform, not so much on other stuff. Yr 11 kids have to wear uniform during GCSEs and no study leave.

Yr 11 kids have to wear uniform during GCSEs OMG they make the kids wear uniform??? 😐

roses2 · 14/06/2023 12:52

Yup, when other schools here don’t as far as I’m aware.

I would say most schools make their students wear uniforms for GCSEs. It’s a safeguarding issue - otherwise how can they tell who is supposed to be on the school site and who isn’t?

SongThrushFeather · 14/06/2023 16:47

I see what your point is and I know that we always wore uniform for exams even those now only around 30, but it has stopped being a thing. Pupils had to sign in when mine did GCSEs last year

Hello! Could you please tell me if Holland Park school will be opening in September 2023? Offset says it has been closed. Also, any improvement with United Learning? Thank you so much

The school itself has not been closed down but now it is an academy has a new registration with Ofsted. You can see that here: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/23/149632

Holland Park School - Open - Find an Inspection Report - Ofsted

https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/23/149632

Could anyone please let me know how Holland Park School / management issues / students results are after school became an academy please? Thank you very much

any improvement with United Learning? What's wrong with schools in the United Learning group, aside from the ridiculous comment above that kids have to wear a uniform? My local catchment school is part of the group and is hugely over subscribed.

Could anyone give me an update on teachers turn out since changes? Kindest regards
