The program offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading and Literacy. In addition to taking a core curriculum shared with all students of Curriculum and Instruction, students will complete courses specific to the Reading and Literacy program. Students also have the option to pursue a  Reading Specialist Certification .

Literacy studies, doctor of philosophy (ph.d.), you are here, a research-focused doctoral program for scholarship on reading, writing, and literacy. .

The Ph.D. program in Literacy Studies is committed to furthering knowledge in literacy and literacy education. Doctoral students construct an individualized program of study based on their areas of interest, to develop their understanding and expertise in particular aspects of the field.

This program was previously known as Reading/Writing/Literacy Ph.D. Beginning in Summer 2024, this program will be titled Literacy Studies Ph.D.

What Sets Us Apart

About the program.

In the Ph.D. program in Literacy Studies, doctoral students customize their course of study to their individual interests. Of 20 required courses, 10 of them are electives, allowing students to work with their advisors to develop a program that is best suited to the individual’s areas of interest.

The Ph.D. program in Literacy Studies emphasizes the interrelationships and integration of theory, research, policy, and practice. Doctoral students construct individual programs of study with their advisor to suit their interests, combining core courses with additional coursework in research methodology and electives.

In addition to the core doctoral courses, students focus on developing their understanding and expertise in particular aspects of the field. These aspects might include teacher education, pedagogy and curriculum, leadership, policy, urban education, multicultural education, adult and community-based literacy in and out of school, or literacy in international contexts. Throughout the program, students learn to conduct research on critical issues and problems in literacy.

In the Ph.D. program in Literacy Studies, students create individual programs of study. They are encouraged to develop one or more areas of concentration. Options include, but are not limited to:

  • Postsecondary learning environments
  • Adult literacy education
  • Reading, writing, and literacy across elementary, middle, and secondary curricula
  • Children’s and adolescent literature

Students in the program benefit from the vast resources of the University of Pennsylvania. We encourage our doctoral students to choose electives from our program's courses, from other Penn GSE programs, and from across the University of Pennsylvania.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

However, several factors may affect the length of an online doctorate in literacy education, including coursework requirements, research expectations, concentration options, and field experience components. Accreditation for Online Reading and Literacy Doctorate Degrees

The ED oversees the funding and legal compliance of educational institutions, while CHEA evaluates their adherence to quality standards. Both organizations maintain online lists of accrediting agencies and accredited schools.

Some degrees also hold special programmatic accreditation. Students should seek an Ed.D. in reading and literacy accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Salaries for literacy education professionals can vary significantly by education level, professional experience, employer type, and geographic location. Some of the top–employing industries are elementary and secondary schools, colleges, educational support services, and state governments.

The table below contains BLS salary data for instructional coordinators who work in the highest–paying U.S. states for literacy professionals. On average, the District of Columbia offers instructional coordinators the greatest yearly compensation, at $98,930 annually. California and Maryland trail closely behind at $92,940 and $85,170 respectively, with Connecticut and Washington offering wages at $84,080 and $83,500. Some of the lowest–paying states for instructional coordinators are Kansas, Montana, and Florida.

Paying for Your Online Doctorate in Reading and Literacy

Students who choose to complete an online doctorate in literacy education should begin researching financial aid opportunities as early as possible. Universities often offer aid to students with financial need or academic merit. Some schools even maintain program–specific scholarship funds. The doctoral degree in Literacy Education prepares graduates to develop critical skills and expertise in cognitive, social, and critical perspectives toward language and literacy.

In this program, students will conduct and publish significant research and scholarly work, design innovative curricula and assessment, advocate for literacy policy, and teach pre- and in-service school personnel. Students will draw on the expertise of faculty through a combination of coursework, independent studies, and other mentoring, as well as offerings from across the School of Education and University, to develop a program of study that focuses on childhood literacy, adolescent literacy, or teaching English as an additional language. Opportunities are available for collaborative or individual presentations and authoring around issues of literacy, reading, and language arts.

Take classes and work with with faculty who have received special recognition for teaching excellence, and are leaders in national and international professional organizations such as National Council of Teachers of English ,  International Literacy Association , and  Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages .

Expertise in teaching and instruction is also developed with the department and with participation in the Future Professoriate Program . This includes orientations, year-round services for teaching assistants, and opportunities to co-teach with fellow doctoral students and department faculty, guest lecture, and independent instruction. Opportunities to gain and demonstrate that expertise include teaching, field supervision, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation students.

Our graduates are faculty in literacy education and teach preparation at prestigious universities, or work in foundations and policy organizations, program and curriculum development, consulting, and children’s literature.

Doctoral Programs in

Literacy Studies

The literacy studies program offers two doctoral degrees: doctor of education in literacy studies (edd) and doctor of philosophy in literacy studies (phd)..

Literacy Studies provides a broad framework with which to bring together doctoral students and faculty interested in numerous facets of language and literacy research, theory, and practice, including: reading/writing/listening/speaking, new literacies/multi-modalities; literature; linguistics; P-12 and college literacy learning and teaching; English as a second/foreign language; miscue analysis; English education; bi-and multilingualism, as well as foreign language learning and teaching.

The intradisciplinary nature of the program is most evident in the five core doctoral courses designed to examine literacy through multiple lines of inquiry: social, cultural, literary, aesthetic, historical, socio-psycholinguistic, personal, and pedagogical. The doctoral core courses provide doctoral students and faculty the opportunity to engage in intellectual discussions and create a dynamic and responsive context for building knowledge about the epistemological, philosophical, theoretical, and pedagogical questions that frame the field. Our goal is that students in the program, as well as the faculty, strive to improve the literacy experiences of all learners by means of research, advocacy, and distinguished teaching. We stand with teachers, children, families, and schools.

The Doctoral Learning Experience

Upon entering the program, students develop a plan of study, under advisement, to focus coursework on their research and teaching interests. The coursework and research projects students pursue have direct relevance to their professional lives.

The doctoral core courses in Literacy Studies are designed to give doctoral students and faculty the opportunity to engage in intellectual discussions and create a dynamic and responsive context for building knowledge about the epistemological, philosophical, theoretical, and pedagogical questions that frame the field.

Doctoral students also pursue advanced coursework in qualitative and quantitative research methods to ensure their facility for posing and pursuing complex and meaningful questions about literacy learning, teaching, and use, as well as to prepare them to serve the field as discerning readers and reviewers of research literature.

Doctoral Legacy

Originally known as the Reading Department, the Literacy Studies program has been conferring doctoral degrees since 1970. It is the only doctoral program in literacy in Nassau or Suffolk counties, and was the first doctoral program in literacy/reading on Long Island.

Graduates of Hofstra’s Literacy Studies doctoral programs have a deep reach into literacy education in New York, and especially on Long Island. At the postsecondary level, Literacy Studies graduates are employed in teacher preparation programs throughout Long Island, New York City, and upstate New York. Several graduates are in school or district leadership positions on Long Island, and many graduates are top-tier classroom teachers in both Long Island and New York City schools.

Admissions Requirements

Students may apply for admission to the doctoral programs at any time throughout the academic year. In addition to University requirements, the following criteria are required for admission to the Literacy Studies doctoral programs:

  • Evidence of three years of full-time teaching experience, or the equivalent
  • Master’s degree in Education, or a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Official copies of transcripts of all postsecondary degrees
  • A current résumé or curriculum vitae
  • Three recommendations, including at least one from a school administrator or former professor
  • Score from the GRE taken within the last five years
  • A carefully written Statement of Purpose (minimum of 500 words in length) indicating the applicant's reasons for pursuing advanced scholarship in Literacy Studies at Hofstra. The statement should include the applicant's academic and professional history and a statement of academic and professional goals.
  • A writing sample (e.g., a college paper, a published article, or any other example of scholarship). The paper should demonstrate how the applicant works with a body of literature and builds an argument. Typically, the sample paper is from a university course completed within the last five years.
  • An interview with two members of the Literacy Studies faculty to discuss the applicant’s academic, professional, and research experiences and interests.

Application files are assessed based on the information contained within the file. No decisions can be made until all the required information has been provided by the applicant. Consideration is given to a combination of criteria, including  a) demonstration of academic standing; b) professional experience; c) potential to pursue and benefit from advanced graduate studies.

Reading Education — MEd/MS, PhD

Reading education — med/ms , phd, reading education — med (certification, online option available).

RSED 6000 Advanced Survey of Exceptionality must be completed if survey of special education course was not completed for prior level certification. If a survey of special education course was completed for prior level certification, the state diversity course requirement is fulfilled with CTRD 6000 Language and Literacy.

Supporting courses must be applicable to the area of certification (e.g., research, assessment/evaluation, classroom management, pedagogy, human behavior/development, foundations, technology, teaching field). 

In addition to the Graduate School requirement of a cumulative 3.0 GPA on all AU courses carrying graduate credit, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 is required on all courses used to meet program requirements.   

Coursework used to meet Class B certification requirements may not be used to meet requirements for Class A certification. 

All substitutions for required courses must be approved using the Course Substitution Form, including transfer work.

The Literacy Education doctoral areas of emphasis in the Division of Language, Literacy, and Social Inquiry (LLSI) at Maryland provide highly motivated students with inter-disciplinary program options grounded in research, theory, and best practices available in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership and other departments in the College of Education.  

Relevant course work may also be taken in American Studies, Anthropology, Classics, Communication, English, Hearing and Speech, History, Journalism, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy, Sociology, Theater, Women’s Studies and other departments at Maryland.

Emphasis in Adolescent, Post-Secondary, and Community Literacies

The Adolescent, Post-Secondary, and Community Literacies doctoral area of emphasis focuses on conducting research on how people in their everyday lives – whether in classrooms, communities, families, or other educational settings – use written language and other semiotic systems to learn, to communicate, to create knowledge, to engage their imaginations, to create positive identities for themselves, to enhance their communities, to promote social justice, to engage in democratic actions, and to participate in all aspects of society. What can I expect?

Each unit consists of readings, discussions, and other activities you will be expected to complete throughout the week. Assignments are due on Sundays, though not every course requires an assignment each week.

In each course, you will receive a detailed scoring guide that describes expectations for every graded assignment.

Grades are based on your participation in weekly reading discussions and completion of assignments. You will also be assessed on your ability to demonstrate an understanding of expected outcomes for your program or specialization. These outcomes are based on the needs and performance standards of your field or discipline.

The Purdue University College of Education ranks #48 in 2024 Best Education Schools – Graduate  Education , according to the 2024 U.S. News & World Report rankings released Apr. 9. This is an increase from #49 in 2023.
